Morning brief: G20 working group meeting in J&K's Srinagar today, Ukraine war updates, and more

The national election in Thailand started on Sunday (May 14). Thai voters, old and young, flocked to their polling stations to vote. The election tests the resolve of a pro-military establishment at the heart of two decades of intermittent turmoil in the coup-prone country. Around 52 million people are eligible to vote in this election. As the war in Ukraine rages on, the Russian defence ministry said on Saturday (May 13) that Ukraine used long-range missiles from the United Kingdom to target civilian sites in the Russian-held city of Luhansk, injuring civilians including six children.

And in Turkey, citizens will vote on Sunday in a crucial election that could unseat President Tayyip Erdogan after 20 years in power and halt his government's increasingly authoritarian path.

Morning brief: Voting in Thailand begins, Russia-Ukraine war updates, and more

Russia has suspended operations at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant in light of provocations by Ukrainian forces. Yevgeny Balitsky, the Moscow-installed governor of the Russia-controlled part of the surrounding region, cited concerns over Kyiv's anticipated counteroffensive to reclaim Russian-held territory, including areas in the Zaporizhzhia region. The conflict in Sudan rages as the capital city Khartoum reported air strikes on Monday (May 8). A southern Khartoum resident told AFP that their family could hear “the sound of airstrikes which appeared to come from near a market in central Khartoum.”

And in the United States, a man in Brownsville, Texas has been charged with manslaughter after he seemingly lost control of his car and ploughed into a crowd of mostly Venezuelans outside a migrant centre. Eight people died and investigators are now trying to determine if the crash was intentional.
