People who are rude to everyone might not be perceived as sexist, suggests the findings of a researcher at the University of Texas at Dallas.Dr Sora Jun, assistant professor of organizations, strategy and international management at the Naveen Jindal School of Management, and her co-authors identified a barrier that makes sexism hard to recognize: men`s rudeness toward other men.

Their study, published in Psychological Science, found that a man does not seem sexist if he treats everyone, both men and women, poorly. Jun said the idea for the research topic came from a discussion with her co-authors, Dr Peter Belmi and Dr Gabrielle S. Adams of the University of Virginia.

"We were having conversations about men who get away with making sexist remarks," Jun said. "We realized that one commonality among these people is that they are often seen as simply being rude because they are rude to men as well. We thought that this attribution of general rudeness might be what allows these people to continue displaying sexist behaviours without retribution."The researchers conducted a series of five studies from 2019 to 2021, using online survey platforms. First, a pilot study examined whether men can both hold sexist beliefs and be rude toward men.

The researchers conducted a two-part survey among 759 employed men to obtain self-reports about rudeness to female and male colleagues at work and their attitudes and beliefs about women.

The pretest found that men who reported holding more negative stereotypes about women also reported being more discourteous, impolite or inconsiderate toward their male and female colleagues.

Researchers said the men believed that rudeness may obscure the recognition of sexism by creating the perception of gender blindness, in which the perpetrator does not notice or pay attention to a person`s gender, creating an illusion of impartiality."By `equal-opportunity jerk,` we mean an individual who is mistakenly seen as gender-blind in their negative treatment toward others," Jun said. "They think, `This person is presumably rude toward both men and women equally, and therefore cannot be sexist.` Of course, in our research, we find that this perception is flawed."Next, the researchers tested whether rudeness toward men obscures gender bias. They surveyed nearly 5,000 male and female online participants and students from professional schools.

In one study, participants read tweets written by former President Donald Trump from July to August 2019, while he was in office. All participants read tweets that contained negative comments toward women, and some saw additional tweets of Trump berating men.The participants were asked whether they thought Trump was sexist or gender-blind. The study found that the more lay observers saw Trump being rude toward men, the more they thought he was gender-blind.

In another study, participants read a fictitious story about a manager who made a sexist remark toward a female intern. Some participants read that the manager also berates male interns. In this study, when the manager made a sexist remark to a female intern and was also rude to male interns, participants viewed him as less sexist because they perceived him to be gender-blind.

The findings suggested that rudeness obscures the recognition of sexism by creating the perception that the sexist perpetrator does not notice or pay attention to gender when dealing with other people."Sexism and rudeness are two different concepts, and we try to outline this idea in the paper," Jun said. "Rudeness is defined as behaviours that are regarded as discourteous, impolite or inconsiderate. Sexism is defined as attitudes, beliefs and behaviours that reflect, foster or promote negative or pejorative stereotypes about women. Not all rude behaviours are sexist, because not all rude behaviours invoke negative stereotypes about women -- for example, failing to acknowledge a co-worker in the hallway. On the other hand, not all sexist treatment is rude."

For example, Jun said, in a common form of sexism, called benevolent sexism, women are treated as if they should be cherished and protected. Benevolent sexism may be regarded as being polite and courteous, but it harms gender equity by promoting negative stereotypes about women, such as being weak or lacking agency.

Gender-Bias TrainingThe researchers also explored the downstream implications of their findings, including gender-bias training. In a replicated study with the fictitious manager, participants diminished the importance of gender-bias training the more they saw the sexist manager`s rudeness toward men.

Jun said these findings show that rudeness creates a critical barrier to addressing sexism by discouraging observers from recommending gender-bias training for sexist perpetrators."The first step to eradicating sexism in the workplace is to identify it when it happens," Jun said. "If observers are unable to recognize an employee`s behaviour as sexist -- because those behaviours are incorrectly explained away as general rudeness -- those problematic sexist behaviours will likely continue to plague organizations."The study also suggests that when rudeness toward men hides sexist behaviour, it hurts women in more than one way, Jun said.

Women first must manage the sexism they face, she said. Second, they may begin to have doubts about whether sexism actually was present, which also can be psychologically taxing. Finally, even when women conclude that sexism is present, they may have a difficult time convincing others that sexism is at play.

Organizations should clearly define sexism in their training programs, Jun said."Our work suggests that lay people`s conception of sexism may be both broad and malleable, so being clear about what it means to be sexist may help people better identify sexism," she said.Jun said future research could examine whether rudeness can hide other types of discrimination, such as racism.

Fresh from the success of last year`s "All The Right Noises", British rockers Thunder are back with a new album inspired by the general isolation felt during the COVID-19 pandemic and people`s addiction to social media.

Released on Friday, 'Dopamine' is the hard rock band's 14th studio album, featuring 16 tracks penned during the lockdown, guitarist and songwriter Luke Morley told Reuters.

"Most of it was conceived and written throughout the pandemic, so there`s lots of stuff about isolation and the more positive aspects, self-analysis," Morley said in a joint interview with Thunder lead singer Danny Bowes.

"The other theme... is about social media, people`s addiction to it and the dopamine hit they get from holding up their phone and going, `Oh, God, I`m lovely today or whatever`."

The record features a mix of sounds - acoustic blues, catchy guitar riffs, sax solo, accordion and a gospel chorus.
Lead single "The Western Sky" nods to Bowes` and Morley`s annual charity motorbike trip while "No Smoke Without Fire" was inspired by online trolling.

PERFORMING LIVE
"Across the Nation" is told through the eyes of a band eager to perform live again, something Thunder will resume soon with a five-date UK arena tour starting on May 21 in Glasgow. They will also play several European festivals this summer.

"We`re used to making a record, releasing it, and then going out on the road to play those songs live in front of people," Bowes said.
"We didn`t get to do it on the last album, which was very odd... These shows have been rescheduled three times so to finally get to do it now is a bit like getting to scratch an itch that`s been there for a long, long time."

Thunder, who formed in 1989, are known for songs like "Dirty Love", "Low Life in High Places" and "A Better Man".

Their 2015 comeback album "Wonder Days" was their first to reach the UK Top 10 in 20 years. Their records since have stayed in that bracket.
Bowes said they had now come to the realisation that they "probably had more years behind us than we had in front".

"We just felt it was even more important to make sure that if one of them... ended up being our last album, we needed to be able to look back and say, `okay, we can leave it there`. And so that seems to be happening more and more with each record."

Rockers Thunder roar back with new album 'Dopamine'

Akshay Kumar recently faced a major backlash for endorsing a tobacco brand after which the Bollywood actor stepped back from the advertisement and issued a public apology for the same.

Now a week after Kumar's statement, Yash, who has been in the news lately for his blockbuster 'KGF' Chapter 2, has declined a multi-crore offer by a tobacco brand.

Exceed Entertainment, the agency that manages endorsement deals of 'KGF' star has confirmed the news.

Baahubali', 'RRR' to 'KGF': Decoding success story of South Indian films

As per HT, Arjun Banerjee, head of the agency that manages Yash’s advertisement and endorsements department revealed in a press statement about the multi-crore deal and said they are going to be extremely mindful.

“I remember when we became a part of the team with Yash and his long time friend and associate Prashant in March 2020, we created an informal group for communication and it was named ‘storm is coming' that is the belief he is instilled in us, at a time when no one knew when will the filming of KGF2 will complete let alone release and be a monstrous hit,'' the statement reads.

The 'KGF': Chapter 2 phenomenon: Yash starrer becomes 4th highest grossing Indian film

“At this point, we as a team are looking at long-term partnerships only, whether it’s in the form of strategic investments, endorsements or equity deals. Recently we declined a double digit multi crore offer from a pan masala brand and are going to be extremely mindful on who we associate with. Given his pan-India appeal, we want use this opportunity to give right kind of messaging to his fans and followers and invest our time and sweat with brands which have a conscience, are like minded and want to play the long game, just like the man himself,” he added.

Akshay stepped down from the ad of a tobacco company Vimal which also features Bollywood celebrities Shah Rukh Khan and Ajay Devgn.
For the endorsement that didn't go down well with the fans, the actor released a lengthy social media post in which he apologised for hurting
the sentiments of people.

She has been dogged by old age and ill-health in the last year, complaining of problems standing and walking that has forced her to cancel a string of public engagements, as well as about of Covid. The celebrations have also been overshadowed by a scandal involving her second son, Prince Andrew, who settled a US civil claim for sexual assault. And royal visits to mark the jubilee in Commonwealth countries in the Caribbean have also not gone to plan. Grandson Prince William and her youngest son Prince Edward have both faced republican protests and calls for the royal family to apologise for its historic role in slavery. The queen, who turned 96 last week, is the world's oldest and longest-serving head of state. As well to the United Kingdom, she is queen in 14 Commonwealth countries, including Australia and Canada. An Ipsos poll of more than 2,000 adults in Britain in March indicated she still had overwhelming support in the country, with a 69-per cent approval rating. Evans described this year's event as "uniquely British", with typical quirky, self-deprecating humour and "slight irreverence". "I think it will be a glorious tribute to the queen," he added.

Phil Lord and Chris Miller, directors of Oscar-winning 2018 animation 'Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse,' unveiled unfinished footage from the first 15 minutes of their sequel 'Across the Spider-Verse,' out next summer. Netflix inks Japan studio deal in anime push It featured various male and female Spidey heroes hopping between dimensions -- and will be followed by another animated sequel, the newly announced "Beyond the Spider-Verse," in 2024. In its opening-night presentation, Sony also presented footage from Brad Pitt action thriller 'Bullet Train,' based on a Japanese novel and out in July. Early scenes showed Pitt's wise-cracking hitman pacing through neon-lit Tokyo streets before brawling with music superstar-turned-actor Bad Bunny on a train. "That's not my first fight," joked the chart-topping Puerto Rican rapper, who was also unveiled as the first Latino to lead a live-action Marvel superhero film -- "El Muerto," out in January 2024. Viola Davis appeared on stage to accept the event's inaugural "trailblazer" prize -- while plugging her upcoming film "The Woman King," a historical epic about the female warriors of the west African kingdom of Dahomey, out in September. "I wanted to be a producer who championed those stories with people with a history that looked like me," said the 'Fences' Oscar-winner. She called the new film -- in which she also stars -- her "magnus opus." Reese Witherspoon appeared by video to introduce her adaptation of the best-selling novel "Where The Crawdads Sing," a creepy drama set around a murder in the North Carolina marshes, out this summer. The presentation also confirmed the new 'Ghostbusters' and 'Venom' sequels and ended with a video message from boxing great George Foreman ahead of a new biopic about his career. - 'Zeitgeist' - This year's CinemaCon brings A-listers back in person to Las Vegas, with Robert De Niro, Rachel McAdams and director David Cronenberg among those due to attend. The stars stayed away last year when anxiety was high over the latest Covid-19 wave, and the mood was gloomy as Hollywood studios released films directly on streaming platforms, bypassing theaters. Major studios have since cheered theater owners by largely reverting to an exclusive 'window' when movies can only be seen on the big screen -- albeit for 45 days or less, down from around 90 days pre-pandemic. Appearing by video, 'Dune' director Denis Villeneuve said he was still "worried about the theatrical window getting shorter and shorter," and called for a return to longer windows to keep the movie-going experience "unique" and "precious." Villeneuve spoke from Budapest, where preparation for his sci-fi epic sequel 'Dune: Part Two' was going "full speed ahead," with the film due October 2023. The Canadian director said he was "sad, horrified and worried" about the war in Ukraine, which led to Hollywood pulling films from Russian screens. Warner Bros international chief Andrew Cripps said pirated copies of "The Batman" were playing at Russian theaters despite the embargo, but added that "we've all learnt to live with uncertainty in recent years." Warner, which merged with Discovery this month to create Hollywood's newest giant, will present its upcoming films Tuesday, before Disney -- which skipped last year's event -- follows Wednesday. CinemaCon concludes Thursday, when Paramount will present the first full screening of long-awaited sequel "Top Gun: Maverick."

Happy Birthday Varun Dhawan: The actor's biggest hits so far

After certain bombshell testimonies, Kris Jenner has made a shocking revelation about a volatile 2016 argument she heard about between her son Rob Kardashian and his then-girlfriend Blac Chyna.

"He had a gun put at his head," Jenner said on Friday while testifying amid Chyna`s USD 100 million lawsuits against the famed reality TV family, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The momager, 66, testified for the second day from the witness stand in a Los Angeles courtroom on Friday that she believed Chyna attempted to murder her son.

As per the outlet, she said "she was told that Chyna pointed a gun at Kardashian`s head, tried to strangle him with a phone cord and hit him with a metal pole while intoxicated.""It was complete chaos. It was scary," said Jenner.Jenner is the first of four defendants, a group that also includes her daughters Kim Kardashian, Khloe Kardashian and Kylie Jenner, to testify in Blac Chyna`s USD 100 million lawsuits alleging the women conspired to have her reality show `Rob and Chyna` cancelled and damage her celebrity status.

As per The Hollywood Reporter, Chyna testified that she was joking with her fiance when she wrapped a phone cord around his neck and grabbed his unloaded gun off a nightstand. But Kris Jenner said putting a gun to her son`s head was "not a joke.""He was a mess.
Rio de Janeiro's carnival, a glittering, sequin-studded festival of the flesh, exploded back to life Friday with the first famed samba school parades since Covid-19 started devastating Brazil.

After two long years, a flood of dancers and drummers reclaimed the iconic beach city's "Sambadrome," its dedicated carnival parade venue, which had been turned into a drive-through vaccination center at the height of the health crisis.

The all-night parades by the city's top samba schools Friday and Saturday nights are the first since February 2020, marking a turning point for hard-hit Brazil, where Covid-19 has claimed more than 660,000 lives, second only to the United States.

"I'm just so happy. I think a lot of people are going to cry when the parades start, including me," said Ana Vieira, a 48-year-old geography teacher, who was dressed in a giant, sparkling white costume awaiting her turn to parade for the Imperatriz samba school.

"Carnival is life. You can see the happiness on people's faces after two long years staying home and missing it," Vieira, who has been parading for 20 years, told AFP.

But the festivities took a tragic turn before they began, when an 11-year-old girl died after being injured in a horrific float accident during a lower-level samba school parade contest Wednesday night, a preview of the main event.

She was rushed to the hospital, but died Friday of her wounds, city officials said.

The tragedy also struck Rio's carnival in 2017, when two freak float accidents killed one person and injured dozens.

- 'Couldn't sleep' -

There were fears the carnival party would be axed again in 2022, after Rio authorities canceled it last year, then postponed it by two months this year from the traditional dates -- just before the Catholic season of Lent -- over fears of the omicron variant.

But with more than 75 percent of the South American country's 213 million people now fully vaccinated, the average weekly Covid-19 death toll has plunged from more than 3,000 a year ago to around 100 now -- allowing the show to go on.

All participants and the 75,000 attendees expected each night are required to present proof of vaccination.

City officials have not authorized the massive carnival street parties known as "blocos," but several smaller ones are still being held.

The pandemic left Brazilians full of "saudades" -- Portuguese for "longing" -- for carnival, a free-for-all of dancing, singing and partying at close quarters that is essentially the opposite of social distancing.

"I couldn't sleep last night, I was so excited," said Rita Marcelino, who was dancing the samba as she prepared to parade in an elaborate African costume.

"I was waking up every two minutes," said the 62-year-old domestic worker, who lost her job and "many" friends and family members to the pandemic.

'Two years of darkness' -

Each samba school in the competition has 60 to 70 minutes to tell a story in music and dance, to be evaluated on nine criteria by the jury.

The reigning champions, Viradouro, chose as their theme Rio's epic 1919 carnival -- the first celebrated after the devastation of another pandemic, the Spanish flu.

"No sadness can withstand so much joy," says their samba theme song.

Other schools picked themes charged with social messages, with Brazil facing divisive elections in October expected to pit far-right President Jair Bolsonaro against leftist ex-leader Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.

Of the 12 schools, eight chose themes dealing with racism or Afro-Brazilian history, loaded issues in a country where the current president has faced frequent accusations of racism.

Their samba songs include treatments of the Black Lives Matter protests; tributes to two "orixas," or deities, of Afro-Brazilian religion; and celebrations of black samba singers.

Carnival should also provide some needed relief for the pandemic-battered economy.

Beyond the swirl of floats, feathers and barely covered flesh, the carnival is big business, moving some four billion reais ($800 million) and creating at least 45,000 jobs, according to official figures.

Participants were just happy the party was back.

"We've had two years of so much darkness in the world," said Latino Suarez, 45, who traveled from Sao Paulo to parade.

"Brazil without carnival isn't Brazil. It's part of who we are."
