Angela Wood proudly recalls the poached chicken in creamy curry sauce recipe that she helped create for Queen Elizabeth II's coronation in 1953, and which has since become a British culinary classic.

Coronation Chicken -- also called 'Poulet Reine Elizabeth' -- is now so popular it can be found in supermarket ready-meals, pre-packed sandwiches and on the pages of many recipe books.

"It's not the same recipe though. It's just mayonnaise with a bit of curry put in," Wood, 89, says laughing as she talks about some modern versions of the famous dish.

Wood was only 19 when, as a student at the renowned Le Cordon Bleu culinary school in Winkfield, near Windsor, west of London, she was asked to perfect a recipe created by the school's director, Constance Spry.

Spry had been given the task of putting on a banquet for foreign dignitaries after the coronation on June 2, 1953.

"Constance Spry walked into the kitchen and said 'this is something we're thinking of doing for the coronation... we'll keep testing it until we get it right,'" said Wood at her home in the picturesque market town of Kimbolton in eastern England.

"Knowing that it was going to be foreign dignitaries from all over the world, she decided that it had to be slightly spicy but not over spicy," she told AFP.

Another constraint was that the dish had to be prepared in advance so had to be cold, added Wood, looking elegant with short white hair, fuchsia-coloured lips and a matching cardigan.

The ingredients also had to be available in the UK, where, even for a royal banquet, imported food was limited after World War II because of rationing.

- A strange mix -

So Wood set to work in the kitchen, experimenting "two or three times a week, for possibly three or four weeks".

"We were forever boiling chickens," she said.

After constantly tweaking the ingredients, they found the right balance.

Wood showed AFP the original recipe, published in an old edition of the British gastronomic classic "The Constance Spry Cookery Book".

The chicken should be poached with a bouquet garni, while the sauce is a reduction of chopped onions, curry powder, tomato puree, red wine and lemon juice.

The mixture is then cooled and added to mayonnaise, lightly whipped cream and apricot puree.

"It's a strange mixture. And people do the first bit (curry powder and wine) and taste it and it's just so horrible and strong," she laughs.

"I mean you can't believe that it can be right."

Wood is sometimes asked why she didn't use mango, as is used in many of today's versions of the classic.

"Well, we didn't have mangoes..., we didn't have Greek yoghurt," she said, adding that "nowadays people add all sorts of things".

The dish was described on the banquet menu, written in French, as "Poulet Reine Elizabeth" and was served to the 350 foreign guests with a rice salad containing peas and herbs.

It followed a tomato and tarragon soup and trout.

Strawberry galette was served for pudding, all washed down with Moselle and Champagne wines.

- Platinum pudding -

Wood never pursued a professional career as a cook, and instead ran the family farm after she got married.

But for special occasions, she and her daughter still sometimes prepare the recipe that has assured her place in British culinary history.

She said she is "honoured" to have helped create the British classic, which earned her a reception with the Queen at the royal estate in Sandringham in February to mark her 70 years on the throne.

To celebrate the monarch's record-breaking Platinum Jubilee, which will see four days of celebrations in early June, Britons have been invited to create a dessert for the Queen.

The best entry is due to be announced on Thursday.

"It's quite surprising how it (Coronation Chicken) certainly stood the test of time and I hope whoever wins the pudding, the same thing happens," said Wood.

It would be a fitting tribute to "the most incredible reign" and a woman who "dedicated her whole life to the country", she adds.

Machine Gun Kelly and his out of box fashion looks are something that we always wait for. Keeping his fashion game on at Billboard award 2022 night, the crooner again made sure to make headlines with his creative yet unique look. At this year's event, Kelly walked hand-in-hand with his fiance Megan Fox. Both of them did twinning in black colour outfits and looked stunning. Talking about the rapper's look specifically, he showed up to the musical event wearing a black Dolce & Gabbana ensemble that featured black pants and a short crop blazer with silver spikes and a full sleeve top embroidered with crystals and the brand's logo along with the spikes. From breast to butt baring: All the wildest fashion looks from Billboard 2022 red carpet But, what took the attention was his manicure, yes we know, that he has always carried the best and the most interesting manicure at previous events, but his new manicure at today's event was a little bit different and the whooping price of the nails will surely give you a mini heart attack.
Ever wondered what a cat might be thinking when you just go 'ps ps ps' at it? It may well be pointing out cat language grammatical errors in your speech but it may also be angry you are not taking its name. Yes, the cat next to the one you are trying to call might be judging you as well.

A study carried out in Japan has revealed that cat can not only remember their own names but also names of other cats they are familiar with. What's more? The cats may even remember names of people in a household.

Remembering names is a quality we generally associate with dogs. And it's surely scary to think that the aloof creature which appears to look down on humans, in general, is secretly listening to household conversation.

Animal science researcher Saho Takagi along with other researchers carried out the experiment. They selected cats who lived in households that had many cats. Each of these cats was then shown photos of other cats and when the photos were shown, a recording of the owner's voice taking name of the cat was played.

The recording would either play the cat's actual name (congruent condition) or some other cat's name (incongruent condition)

It was seen that cat responded differently in these both cases. It was also seen that incongruent conditions (when name of the cat didn't match that played in the recording) resulted in cats (looking at photo) stare for a longer time, as if puzzled due to mismatched information.

The findings were reported in journal Scientific Reports.

Kendrick Lamar, the rapper whose poignant lyricism has soundtracked the Black Lives Matter movement and compelled many to call him the voice of a generation, dropped his first solo album in five years on Friday.

His long-anticipated fifth studio album 'Mr. Morale and the Big Steppers' was released to streaming services overnight, and sees Lamar deliver raw self-reflection set against cutting social criticism.

The record is expected to dominate the charts and place the Pulitzer Prize-winning Lamar once again at the center of the American cultural conversation.

Born in Compton, California, the 34-year-old artist is renowned as one of contemporary music's most impactful writers, with his verses offering personal insights while taking on systemic issues such as race relations and structural poverty.

Set to jazz-heavy instrumentals, the Grammy-winner's music has made him a household name and a rare artist whose work is commercially successful but who is not dependent on constantly churning out content.

"Kendrick is a true lyricist," said Lakeyta Bonnette-Bailey, a professor at Georgia State University who has written extensively on the relationships between rap, politics and social justice.

"The way that he uses metaphors, the way that he hits on certain beats with certain verse... it's an entire experience," she told AFP.

"He always has something profound to say."

In 2018 Lamar became the first rapper to win the Pulitzer Prize for music, with the award's board saying his album "DAMN." was "unified by its vernacular authenticity and rhythmic dynamism that offers affecting vignettes capturing the complexity of modern African American life."

- 'Authenticity' -

Following that historic win, he curated and contributed a number of songs to the soundtrack for the film "Black Panther," including his Grammy- and Oscar-nominated collaboration with SZA, "All The Stars."

Lamar also featured on a number of songs with fellow artists, including his cousin Baby Keem's latest album.

But his five-year hiatus from producing solo work had some fans speculating about his possible retirement.

Lamar put those rumors to bed last month in announcing his fifth studio record -- an 18-track double album that sees the rapper once more turn his socially conscious gaze to our tumultuous era.

Bonnette-Bailey said Lamar had a talent for "letting people inside his mind," a quality that drew in his listeners.

"(He is) telling stories of his own personal struggles through his music, as well as documenting and telling the story of what is occurring in Black America, or in Compton, or in the whole Black diaspora," she said.

- 'Bare my soul' -

The album's first track "United In Grief" opens with a choir singing the line "I hope you find some peace of mind in this lifetime," before Lamar comes in: "I've been goin' through somethin'."

Throughout the album, Lamar meditates on inner demons, repressed emotions, the struggles of family life and the trappings of fame.

Spoken-word track "We Cry Together," which features actress Taylour Paige, portrays a fighting couple whose biting words see personal anger transition into structural rage.

"You the reason why strong women fucked up / Why they say it's a man world / See, you the reason for Trump / You the reason we overlooked, underpaid, underbooked, under shame," read the lyrics.

In "Auntie Diaries," Lamar critiques society's treatment of transgender people, while in "Savior" he warns against turning to celebrities for guidance.

The album's cover is a photo of Lamar wearing a crown of thorns and holding a young child, while a woman who appears to be his partner Whitney Alford is in the background, holding an infant.

In the raw, soulful track "Mother I Sober," Lamar lays bare stories of childhood trauma, infidelity and sexual abuse.

That track ends with a woman's voice telling a child: "You did it, I'm proud of you / You broke a generational curse," before the same choir that began the album closes the track.

Netflix is undoubtedly the king of the OTT market. The streaming giant, which has been ruling the market for years now, this year sent a shockwave around the world as it revealed that the company has lost more than 200,000 subscribers.

It was the first time in a decade that the company has lost its subscribers. After facing a major loss, multiple theories started coming about streaming pioneers' future. Among all, the one thing that attracted most of the eyes was the streaming giant is planning to introduce cheaper plans with an advertisement, and back then responding to the sudden drop, Chief Executive Reed Hastings who has long snubbed the idea of advertisement suggested that the company would "figure out (the plan) over the next year or two."

But, now it looks like Netflix's boss' had changed their mind and will introduce cheaper plans with ads soon. As per Reuters, the New York Times reported that the streaming giant is planning to introduce new cheaper plans that will include advertisements by the end of the year, earlier than originally planned.
The company has also told all its employees that they are also planning to shut down password sharing around the same time, the report said, via Reuters.

Sharing more details about her last day, Ashley said as per Variety, “It was a mixed day, I visit with my mom and pop every day when I’m home in Tennessee, so I was at the house visiting as I am every day. Mom said to me, ‘Will you stay with me?’ and I said, ‘Of course I will.’…I went upstairs to let her know that her good friend was there and I discovered her. I have both grief and trauma from discovering her.”

Judd also used the platform to share awareness about mental illness, “My mother knew that she was seen and she was heard in her anguish, and she was walked home,” she said, before adding, “When we’re talking about mental illness, it’s very important to be clear and to make the distinction between our loved one and the disease. It’s very real, and it lies, it’s savage.”

Naomi, the Grammy winner singer of the famous Judds duo, breathed her last on April 30. Her family released a statement in which they noted that they lost their 'beautiful mother to the disease of mental illness.'
