Team India's 18-man squad for the upcoming South Africa ODIs, in the African nation, was announced on December 31 (Friday), 2021. While the squad announcement was delayed reportedly to examine Rohit Sharma's fitness, the 18-member squad got finally revealed sans limited-overs skipper Rohit.

Rohit has been ruled out due to hamstring injury as his deputy KL Rahul will lead the Men in Blue in the three ODIs against SA, starting on January 19 at Paarl. After the squad announcement, BCCI's All-India Senior Selection Committee's chairman and former player Chetan Sharma attended his first-ever press conference since taking over the top post.

In the PC, Sharma addressed some important topics pertaining in Indian cricket at present, i.e. the ODI captaincy row, opened up on the prospects of having KL Rahul as the future leader and more.

On KL Rahul's rise

Chetan said at the PC, "We are looking to groom KL Rahul and we have confidence in him. He has proved his leadership qualities. KL is the best one who can handle the side. He is an all-format player and he has got good experience of captaincy... this is what all selectors think."

For the unversed, Rahul has captained Punjab Kings (PBKS) in the last two IPL seasons and is touted to be Lucknow franchise's skipper in IPL 2022.

On Ganguly vs Kohli statements

The biggest issue in Indian cricket right now is the contradictory statements made by BCCI chief Sourav Ganguly and former limited-overs captain Kohli post the latter's T20I captaincy resignation and sacking as ODI skipper.

While Ganguly claimed that BCCI had asked Kohli to reconsider his decision to quit as T20I captain, the 33-year-old Kohli denied all such claims in a presser before the SA tour. Hence, Chetan Sharma shared his take on the matter and said, "When meeting started, it was a surprise for everybody. If the World T20 is round the corner and you hear something like this, what will be your reaction? Everyone present in that meeting had told him that he should rethink his decision (to quit T20 captaincy) and we can talk about it after the World Cup. All selectors felt at that time that this can affect us in the World Cup. It was told to Virat for sake of Indian cricket, please continue as the captain and it was told by everybody present in the meeting. The convenors were there, board officials were there. Sabhi ne bola hai (everyone told him). Who won’t tell? If this news comes to you, you are in a shock. But since we had a World T20 to play, we never wanted it to affect team."

"He (Kohli) had his plans and we respect him. If he has taken the decision, and this is what he said in the media also, that from WTC he had been thinking about it... everyone told him to think about it and we thought let’s talk after the World Cup," added the former cricketer.

On Kohli's sacking as ODI captain

On December 8, BCCI removed Kohli as the ODI skipper, appointing Rohit as the white-ball skipper. This also led to varied responses from all corners, especially as it came only in the form of a tweet from the BCCI and wasn't followed by an official statement or presser. At his presser on December 15, Kohli had admitted that he agreed on the reason given for his sacking, however, revealed that he came to know about the decision only sometime before the official announcement was made.

In this regard, Sharma told, "It was Virat’s decision and nobody actually told him to quit the [T20I] captaincy. But once he quit T20 captaincy, obviously the selectors have to think what our decision is and obviously all selectors think it is one captain for white-ball formats, it becomes easy for selectors to plan things. We informed him regarding this. The 50 overs decision was the selectors’ and T20 captaincy was his decision."

He further asserted, "As soon as selection committee came to the point and discussed it, I immediately called up Virat that afternoon. There was a Test selection coming up. We didn’t want to inform in that selection meeting and that’s why I called him when our meeting was over. And this is what selectors think and there will be one white-ball captain, there were a couple of questions and we had good conversations. He (Kohli) agreed on that. What we discuss I can’t disclose it here and we had a good chat. Most important thing is, Virat is a very important part of Indian cricket. We want him to play for India and keep getting runs, because the team revolves around it."

"When it comes to planning, our thought process was we need one white-ball captain and one red-ball captain. He came at (Test selection) meeting around 5:30 pm and we had informed him before that. It was hard decision for us and we have to take some hard decisions, that’s what we are here for. Same for selection of playing XI. Sometimes those are need of the hour. He is going to be a very important for years to come," the 55-year old added.

Chetan Sharma signed off by saying, "The main goal for everybody is the same: to keep India on top. We don’t want controversies. That is the reason we don’t come out. Our job is to select the team, make sure the best guy goes and plays for the country. When these controversies happen, it makes us sad as cricketers. I was joking that Ajaz [Patel] has been dropped by New Zealand after taking ten wickets. Imagine if we had done something similar, what would have happened to us," he said.

At present, India is involved in a three-match Test series versus South Africa, in the rainbow nation. The Kohli-led Test side won the series opener, at Centurion, by 113 runs and are on the cusp of winning their first-ever Test series in the African nation if they win at least one of the remaining two Tests.

The Tests will be followed by three ODIs, which will give Rahul the chance to lead India for the first time in a full series.

ODI captaincy row, KL Rahul as future captain: Major talking points from Chetan Sharma's press conference

Contradicting Virat Kohli, chairman of selectors Chetan Sharma on Friday said the batting maestro was told to carry on as T20I captain by everyone in the BCCI.

Days after Kohli quit T20I captaincy, BCCI president Sourav Ganguly said that the Board had asked the superstar batter to reconsider his decision.

Kohli had contradicted Ganguly's statement during his explosive press conference prior to leaving for the Test series against South Africa, saying he had no such communication with the Board's president and that he was informed about his removal as ODI skipper one and a half hour before the selection meeting for the SA series.

However, Sharma on Friday said, "Everyone from selectors to (BCCI) office bearers, convenor of selection meeting and all present told Kohli to wait on T20 captaincy till World Cup got over."

Everyone told Virat Kohli to reconsider stepping down as T20 captain, says chief selector Chetan Sharma

The calendar year is coming to an end. A lot of action took place in the sporting arena after the Covid-19 pandemic wreaked havoc in 2020. Some big-ticket tournaments took place in the 22-yard cricket strip, which tested Team India (the senior men's team) to the core. While India continued to dominate in Tests, despite missing out on the coveted WTC title in the inaugural cycle's finale, they were decent in ODIs but had a forgettable campaign in the T20 World Cup in UAE. Talking about Virat Kohli, the 33-year-old had a rather ordinary calendar year with the end quarter turning into a nightmare.

The superstar cricketer, who remains the poster boy of Indian cricket, finished 2021 without being able to lead India to an ICC title and went on to dent his terms with BCCI and the current selection committee in early December. In addition, the right-hander ended without a hundred in international cricket (with his century drought lasting for over two years).

KING KOHLI BECOMES A PROUD FATHER BEFORE NATIONAL DUTY RESUMES

The year started for Kohli with some needless noise on his much-talked about paternity leave. On January 11, Kohli turned proud father as he welcomed his first child, daughter named Vamika, along with wife Anushka Sharma.

Watching India's glorious run in the Australia Tests Down Under by being miles away, Kohli returned to international cricket to take charge in the home Tests versus England. Losing his first Test of the year versus Joe Root & Co., Kohli inspired India's comeback as the hosts romped past the Englishmen in the remainder of the series to win the four-match series 3-1 and book a place in the WTC final.

Kohli, however, ended the series with 172 runs, including two fifty-plus scores, at an average of 28.66.

India then turned to the five T20Is and three ODIs against the same opposition. Facing a competitive Eoin Morgan-led side, India were tested before they won the series 3-2. The then Indian captain Kohli ended with 231 runs (most runs in bilateral T20Is involving Test-playing nations) to be adjudged the Player-of-the-Series.

In the ODIs, Kohli had two good outings with two fifties, but continued to remain away from triple-figure knocks. He, however, led his troops to a 2-1 series win. He was tested to the core as captain in terms of his bowling changes and field settings throughout the series against the ODI World champions.

IPL AMID COVID-19 SECOND WAVE

The IPL 2021 edition was the next assignment for Kohli. Leading the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), the right-hander started the season on a high with back-to-back victories. While RCB did lose the plot to an extend before the COVID-19 second wave halted the tournament, Kohli's numbers with the bat was pretty mediocre with 198 runs at 33 in 7 games. His strike-rate remained below 120 on six outings.

GLORIOUS CHANCE RUINED IN WTC FINAL

The biggest assignment for Kohli, both as captain and batsman, came when he led India to the WTC final versus New Zealand in Southampton in mid-June. While many termed India as the overwhelming favourites, it seemed as if Kohli would finally be able to break the national side's jinx of not being able to win an ICC title since 2013. However, all hopes were dented as his year remained ordinary.

His returns with the bat were 44 and 13 as India lost convincingly by 8 wickets to lose the marquee title. Thus, the team had no choice but to revamp soon as the second cycle commenced with India's five Tests versus England in the United Kingdom, from August 3.

THE HIGHS AGAINST HOSTS ENGLAND

While India rode on KL Rahul and Rohit Sharma's batting performances, Kohli continued to remain below par despite few good innings. He averaged only 31.14 after the series was interrupted due to Covid crisis in Indian camp after the fourth and penultimate Test.

TWO BIG ANNOUNCEMENTS - WHO SAW IT COMING?

The action moved to the second and final leg of IPL 2021, in the UAE. Kohli returned to lead RCB after making two massive announcements.

In mid-September, Kohli announced his decision to step aside as the T20I captain. He tweeted saying, "I have been fortunate enough to not only represent India but also lead the Indian Cricket Team to my utmost capability. I thank everyone who has supported me in my journey as the Captain of the Indian Cricket Team."

"I couldn't have done it without them - the boys, the support staff, the selection committee, my coaches, and each and every Indian who prayed for us to win. Understanding workload is a very important thing and considering my immense workload over the last 8-9 years playing all 3 formats and captaining regularly for last 5-6 years, I feel I need to give myself space to be fully ready to lead the Indian Team in Test and ODI Cricket. I have given everything to the Team during my time as T20 Captain and I will continue to do so for the T20 Team as a batsman moving forward."

"Of course, arriving at this decision took a lot of time. After a lot of contemplation and discussions with my close people, Ravi bhai and also Rohit, who have been an essential part of the leadership group, I've decided to step down as the T20 Captain after this T20 World Cup in Dubai in October. I have also spoken to the secretary Mr Jay Shah and the President of BCCI Mr Sourav Ganguly along with all the selectors about the same. I will continue to serve Indian Cricket and the Indian Team to the best of my ability."

Thus, a prolonged dry spell with the bat, bio-bubble restrictions and burden of leading across formats hampered even someone of the statute of King Kohli. It was visible as while his ardent fans always waited for the real Kohli to show up, but he often kept returning with below-par performances as per his standards (For the unversed, vital knocks kept coming from his willow at regular intervals. However, one cannot get content with substandard showings when it comes to the superstar cricketer).

The day IPL 14 resumed, on September 19 in the UAE, Kohli also announced that this will be his last season as RCB captain. He said, "This will be my last IPL as captain of RCB. I’ll continue to be an RCB player till I play my last IPL game. I thank all the RCB fans for believing in me and supporting me."

NO IPL TROPHY OR T20 WC HEROICS

Thus, Kohli entered the IPL final leg with his loyalists hoping for him to sign off on a high as captain; winning RCB and his maiden trophy. Nonetheless, it didn't turn out that way as Bengaluru lost in the Eliminator with Kohli ending the season with 405 runs in 14 games at 119.46.

Post the IPL, Kohli moved to the T20 World Cup, which was to be his last assignment as T20I captain. Needless to say, the countrymen hoped for him to take India to the title and also sign off on a fitting note as the captain in the shortest format. However, Kohli endured back-to-back failures as India bowed out in the Super 12 round, also becoming the first Indian captain to lose a WC clash versus the Men in Green.

Kohli's dubious captaincy calls hogged headlines before India's untimely exit. Meanwhile, he finished with 68 runs in 5 games, with a high-score of 57 and not batting at all on two instances.

While Kohli was on a break during India's home T20Is and first Test versus New Zealand, he returned back to action for the second and final Test against the Black Caps. He led India with aplomb as they achieved their biggest win in terms of runs but once again couldn't break his century-drought, returning with 0 and 36. He has four ducks in Tests in 2021 with one more match to go in the calendar year.

BCCI ROW

On December 8, BCCI removed Kohli as the ODI captain and appointed Rohit as the limited-overs skipper. While many speculated a rift between the two cricketers, Kohli rubbished all such rumours in an explosive presser before India's departure to South Africa. However, he made some glaring statements, contradicting from the claims made by BCCI chief Sourav Ganguly and a board member.

While Ganguly had claimed that he had requested Kohli to keep the top job in T20Is, as captain, Kohli denied all such claims. Moreover, he also stated that he was always available for the SA ODIs, contrary to statements made by BCCI treasurer Arun Dhamal.

Hence, it has now become BCCI vs Kohli as things have continued to go downhill for the 33-year-old batsman. Overall, 2021 has been a mixed bag for Kohli and he will be tested in the new calendar year as well. After all, he has endured more disappointments than spirited highs.

The calendar year is coming to an end. A lot of action took place in the sporting arena after the Covid-19 pandemic wreaked havoc in 2020. Some big-ticket tournaments took place in the 22-yard cricket strip, which tested Team India (the senior men's team) to the core.

I thank everyone who has supported me in my journey as the Captain of the Indian Cricket Team." "I couldn't have done it without them - the boys, the support staff, the selection committee, my coaches, and each and every Indian who prayed for us to win. Understanding workload is a very important thing and considering my immense workload over the last 8-9 years playing all 3 formats and captaining regularly for last 5-6 years, I feel I need to give myself space to be fully ready to lead the Indian Team in Test and ODI Cricket. I have given everything to the Team during my time as T20 Captain and I will continue to do so for the T20 Team as a batsman moving forward." "Of course, arriving at this decision took a lot of time. I will continue to serve Indian Cricket and the Indian Team to the best of my ability." 🇮🇳 ❤️ pic.twitter.com/Ds7okjhj9J — Virat Kohli (@imVkohli) September 16, 2021 × Thus, a prolonged dry spell with the bat, bio-bubble restrictions and burden of leading across formats hampered even someone of the statute of King Kohli. He has four ducks in Tests in 2021 with one more match to go in the calendar year. BCCI ROW On December 8, BCCI removed Kohli as the ODI captain and appointed Rohit as the limited-overs skipper.

Veteran spinner Harbhajan Singh announced his retirement from all forms of cricket on Friday (December 24) as he drew curtains on an illustrious career spanning over 23 years. One of the best spinners to have played for India, Harbhajan is the second-highest wicket-taker for India across formats behind only legendary Anil Kumble.

Harbhajan, who made his international debut for India in March 1998, last played for India in 2015. He was part of India's 2007 T20 World Cup and the 2011 ODI World Cup-winning squads under MS Dhoni. He also played an instrumental role in India's several memorable wins both at home and away from home.

Harbhajan played under several great captains during his playing days for India but rates Ganguly the highest. He recently opened up on comparisons between Dhoni and Ganguly as captains and called the latter the leader who made him the cricketer that he is today.

Opening up on the comparison between two of the greatest Indian captains of all time, Harbhajan picked Ganguly as his favourite for the way he fought for him at the start of his career and groomed him into a match-winner. The veteran spinner said he was a 'no one' when Ganguly handled him but had become someone by the time Dhoni became captain of the Indian team.

"It’s a simple answer for me. Sourav Ganguly had held me at that juncture of my career when I was a ‘No One’. But when Dhoni became the captain, I was a “Someone”. So you need to understand the big difference," Harbhajan told PTI, comparing Ganguly and Dhoni.

"Dada knew I had skills but didn’t know whether I will deliver. In case of Dhoni, he knew that I have been there and done that. He knew that I have won matches before him and will win a few for him also."

"In life and in profession, you need that one person, who will guide you at the proper moment and Sourav was that man for me. If Sourav wouldn’t have fought for me and got me in the team, who knows, today you might not be taking this interview of mine. Sourav is the leader who made me what I am," he added.

Team India enjoyed the services of MS Dhoni as mentor for the 2021 T20 World Cup in the UAE. The move was made by the BCCI so that Dhoni's presence would help the youngsters in an ICC event and guide the team to their first-ever ICC-trophy since 2013.

While India's campaign was disappointing, to say the least, Dhoni's presence as a mentor was much appreciated in the cricketing fraternity. Now, former Indian pacer Atul Wassan has dropped a bomb and explained why the ex-Indian captain was actually appointed as the mentor for the showpiece event, where Virat Kohli-led Men in Blue failed to make it to the semi-finals.

A lot has transpired in Indian cricket since early December, 2021. With Kohli being removed as the ODI captain and being succeeded by Rohit Sharma, there has been a huge outrage especially post Kohli's explosive presser before India's departure for South Africa. Thus, Kohli and the BCCI are now at loggerheads due to their contrasting statements on the turn of events with regard to the ODI captaincy saga.

Wassan also opined on the ODI captaincy change and said, "Here in India, once you have played a lot of cricket and you become a demi-god, the player expects to get some lineage, get some special treatment. This system needs to change.

"If you are not gelling well with the organisation and you have got a better option, players also have to stop feeling low or let down. Don't expect too much from the board because once you have a tap on the shoulder, you have got to take it as a man."

At present, Kohli-led Indian team is in South Africa for the three-match Test series in the African nation, which gets underway on December 26 in Centurion. Kohli, Shastri were controlling Indian cricket: Ex-India pacer on Dhoni's appointment as mentor for T20 WC

Indian cricket hasn't been at ease in the past few weeks. After BCCI appointed Rohit Sharma as the limited-overs captain, sacking Virat Kohli as the ODI skipper, it led to widespread reactions. While Kohli addressed the press conference, before India's departure for South Africa, and made it clear that he has no issues with Rohit, he made some glaring remarks.

The 33-year-old Kohli contradicted from BCCI chief Sourav Ganguly's claims that he was never asked to reconsider quitting as T20I captain. Moreover, he revealed that he was told about his ODI captaincy sacking just sometime before the official announcement took place. In addition, he denied claims (made by a board member) that he was looking to skip the SA ODIs. Thus, things aren't at its best between Kohli and BCCI.

Amid all this, there has been several reactions by former cricketers on the ODI captaincy row. Now, former Indian cricketer Mohammed Kaif has also opened up on the whole episode and has acknowledged 'trouble-shooter' Rahul Dravid's presence as head coach in the national setup amid such troubled times.

"Lately, Indian cricket has been in the news for all the wrong reasons. Indian captain Virat Kohli's press conference before leaving for South Africa created a storm and Sourav Ganguly too got dragged into it," Kaif wrote in his column for India.com

"Thankfully for Indian cricket, they had a trouble-shooter in place. We know him by the name of Rahul Dravid, the new Head Coach of the Indian cricket team. Having played with and under Rahul bhai, I can safely tell you that if there was ever a man to handle the ship of the Indian team, it is him."

"I say this with quiet confidence as Dravid himself has seen a lot of ups and downs in his times as a former India cricketer and captain. He was leading India when Greg Chappell was around as a coach. He was captain of Rajasthan Royals when the spot-fixing and match-fixing controversy happened in 2013," mentioned Kaif.

He added, "As captain these phases tested him but he came out on top. His communication skills, patience, ability to handle egos and above all his selflessness worked in his favour."

Following Kohli's explosive press conference, BCCI President Ganguly made it clear that the board will not react to the former's statements at present as India have plenty of cricketing action in the near future.

It will be interesting to see how Kohli-Dravid take Indian team forward in the forthcoming three-match Test series versus South Africa, in the African nation. The three Tests starts on December 26 in Centurion, which will be followed by the three ODIs in early January, 2022.

He was leading India when Greg Chappell was around as a coach. He was captain of Rajasthan Royals when the spot-fixing and match-fixing controversy happened in 2013," mentioned Kaif. He added, "As captain these phases tested him but he came out on top. His communication skills, patience, ability to handle egos and above all his selflessness worked in his favour." It will be interesting to see how Kohli-Dravid take Indian team forward in the forthcoming three-match Test series versus South Africa, in the African nation. The three Tests starts on December 26 in Centurion, which will be followed by the three ODIs in early January, 2022.

Md Kaif acknowledges 'trouble-shooter' Rahul Dravid's presence in Team India amid Virat Kohli vs BCCI row

Former Indian team head coach Ravi Shastri has reacted to the number of developments that have taken place in the senior men's cricket team post the end of his tenure. Post his exit, he has been succeeded by Rahul Dravid whereas Virat Kohli recently got removed as the ODI captain, with Rohit Sharma replacing him as the limited-overs skipper.

For the unversed, Rohit had already succeeded Kohli as the T20I captain post the World Cup in the UAE. In mid-September, the 33-year-old Kohli had revealed that the mega event in the UAE will be his last assignment as the T20I skipper. Thus, Shastri has opened up on Rohit taking over as the white-ball captain and the ODI captaincy row, created due to contrasting statements from Kohli and BCCI chief Sourav Ganguly.

'Once Virat Kohli said....' - Shastri reacts to Rohit Sharma's appointment as India's limited-overs captain

Former Indian cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar has joined the bandwagon and reacted to the Virat Kohli vs BCCI ODI captaincy row. Ever since the BCCI announced that Kohli has been removed as the ODI captain, with Rohit Sharma being appointed as the limited-overs skipper, things went out of hand in a flash.

While Kohli rubbished rumours of any rift with Rohit in a press conference, before India's departure for South Africa, he claimed that BCCI chief Sourav Ganguly had no word with him to reconsider quitting as T20I captain (contrary to Ganguly's claims) and even stressed that he had no prior communication with the selectors being his sacking as ODI skipper. In addition, the 33-year-old Kohli said that he was always available for the upcoming SA ODIs, in the African nation, contradicting a claim made by a board member. Hence, it has been Kohli vs BCCI since then.

Now, Manjrekar has also reacted to the unfortunate turn of events and feels that Ganguly shouldn't have made any statement on behalf of the selectors post Kohli's removal as ODI captain. The BCCI President had said that he had advised Kohli to retain the top job in T20Is before the latter completely contradicted from his remark.

Virat Kohli vs BCCI: Don't know why there was any statement by Sourav Ganguly, says Sanjay Manjrekar

Virat Kohli-led India is in South Africa and are gearing up for the three-match Test series opener versus the Proteas, starting on December 26 in Centurion. Before the national side left for SA, Indian cricket saw a new controversy take place after Rohit Sharma became the limited-overs captain, with BCCI sacking Kohli as the ODI skipper.

After Kohli lost ODI captaincy, having already resigned as the T20I captain, his explosive press conference left many stunned. During the presser, he denied being asked by the BCCI chief Sourav Ganguly to reconsider his decision of stepping aside as the T20I skipper (as selectors were reportedly keen on having only one leader in white-ball formats) and also stated that he didn't have any prior communication with the selectors before being sacked as captain in the 50-over format.

He further asserted, "Ganguly spoke about the whole thing, obviously Virat wanted to make his case clear. I believe it should have been between the chairman of the selection committee and the captain. A captain is selected or removed by the selection committee, that’s not Ganguly’s jurisdiction at all."

After Kohli's presser, Ganguly had made it clear that BCCI won't comment any further on the matter for the time being. At present, India is on South Africa tour and more outside noise -- due to the captaincy change row -- will dent the national side's chances of winning the upcoming three Tests and equal number of ODIs in the rainbow nation.

The onus, however, will remain on Kohli who will have to perform in all cylinders as his terms with the BCCI is far from ideal in the present scenario.

Ganguly had no business to speak on behalf of selection committee: Vengsarkar on BCCI-Kohli captaincy row

A lot has transpired in Indian cricket recently. Following Rohit Sharma's appointment as the ODI captain, replacing Virat Kohli, there was a lot of noise in the cricketing fraternity. Kohli addressed the media in a press conference before the team's departure for South Africa and rubbished rift rumours with Hitman. However, he contradicted from BCCI chief Sourav Ganguly's claims saying that the latter had never asked him to reconsider quitting as T20I captain.

Further, Kohli also told that he had no prior communication with the board members or selectors before his sacking as ODI skipper. In addition, he said that he was always available for the SA ODIs, contrary to the claims by a board member. Hence, former Indian cricketer and ex-selector Kirti Azad has opened up on the whole controversy.

Sourav Ganguly should've learnt from Greg Chappell episode: Ex-selector on BCCI-Virat Kohli row

Virat Kohli-BCCI have been at the loggerheads following the recent ODI captaincy switch in Team India. Early this month, the BCCI named Rohit Sharma as the limited-overs captain, replacing Kohli as the ODI skipper after he had already resigned as the T20I captain.

Ahead of India's departure for South Africa, where they play three Tests and ODIs each, Kohli addressed the media in BCCI's customary press conference and stated that he had no prior communication with the board and selectors before being removed as the ODI captain. In addition, he claimed that Sourav Ganguly had never approached him to reconsider quitting as T20I skipper, contradicting the BCCI chief's claims. Hence, there is clear tension between Kohli and the BCCI.

While the board hasn't reacted to the statements made by Kohli in the recent presser, former Pakistan captain Salman Butt has defended BCCI's silence.

Main objective is to play for the country: Former Pak captain defends BCCI's silence over Kohli presser row

Virat Kohli-led India are in South Africa for three Tests and equal number of ODIs, starting from December 26 at Centurion. However, things aren't at its very best between Indian Test captain Kohli and Sourav Ganguly-led BCCI.

After BCCI announced Rohit Sharma as the new limited-overs captain, succeeding Kohli, fans were speculating if everything was fine between Rohit and Kohli. While Kohli brushed aside all 'rift' rumours with Hitman, he denied having any proper communication with the BCCI before his ODI sacking and also contradicted from Ganguly's remark on him resigning as T20I captain. THROWBACK: 'One of my favourite captains' - When Sourav Ganguly was all praise for Virat Kohli

BCCI president Sourav Ganguly said he likes Indian Test captain Virat Kohli's attitude but is not happy with his nature of picking up fights. Ganguly's comments come amidst raging controversy in Indian cricket over the recent change in ODI captaincy where Kohli was replaced by Rohit Sharma as the skipper of the ODI team.

While the decision created a lot of buzz in the cricket fraternity, things took a turn for the worse after Kohli's explosive press conference ahead of India's tour of South Africa where he contradicted Ganguly's comments on the captaincy change. Ganguly had claimed he had personally requested Kohli not to give up India's T20I captaincy earlier this year.

However, Kohli contradicted the statement by clarifying that he was never asked not to give up the T20I captaincy. He has stepped down as the T20I captain of the Indian team in October this year. Kohli also revealed there was no prior communication from the selectors and Ganguly about his sacking as ODI captain and that he was informed about the decision only ninety minutes before it was made official.

Amid the raging controversy, speaking at an event in Gurugram on Saturday (December 18), BCCI president Ganguly was asked which players' attitude does he like the most. Responding to the question, Ganguly took Kohli's name but added that he doesn't like his fighting nature.

“I like Virat Kohli’s attitude but he fights a lot," said the BCCI president.

Ganguly had earlier this week broken his silence after Kohli contradicted his comments in his press conference. The BCCI president refused to get into details and said the board will deal with the matter. "I have got nothing to say. We will deal with it, leave it to the BCCI," he had said.

BCCI is yet to react to the matter and it remains to be seen what Ganguly will have to say about Kohli's comments which clearly were against his version of the story.

I like Virat Kohli's attitude but he fights a lot, says BCCI president Sourav Ganguly amid captaincy row

Virat Kohli contradicted BCCI president Sourav Ganguly in an explosive press conference ahead of the Test series against South Africa. Contrary to Ganguly's comments that the BCCI had president personally spoken to Kohli to convince him not to give up T20I captaincy earlier this year, Kohli said he was never asked not to quit. Kohli also revealed he was informed about his sacking as ODI captain only 90 minutes before the decision was made official.

Kohli has been replaced with Rohit Sharma as ODI captain of the Indian team. Rohit had earlier taken over as India's T20I skipper after Kohli's decision to step down from the post. Ganguly had earlier said the selectors only wanted one white-ball captain leading the side which is why Kohli had to be replaced by Rohit.

However, his claim that Kohli was asked to continue as the T20I captain before stepping down, was labelled false by India's Test skipper himself. The contradicting statements from Kohli and Ganguly have led to a massive row over the change in captaincy with BCCI yet to come up with a response. BCCI president Ganguly had said the board will decide the course of action when asked about Kohli's comments.

Former India cricketer Madan Lal has urged the BCCI president to come out in public and give an explanation. The 1983 World Cup winner believes the selectors could have handled the situation in a better way.

“I think this situation should have been handled in a better way because it is not a controversy but a matter of opinion. I don’t know what Sourav had said to Virat so I don’t want to comment on that," Lal told ANI.

“But I think that Sourav being the president should come out and give an explanation and that will be the end of the entire issue. We need to be focused on the South Africa tour right now as it is an important game for us,” he added.

The former all-rounder also agreed with Sunil Gavaskar's views on the matter. Gavaskar had said Kohli should sit down with the selectors and the management to sort out the issues. However, Lal insisted the selectors should have communicated with Kohli in a proper way.

“Gavaskar is correct with his point. Virat should clear all his issues with the management. This is not a big matter. I would say that the selectors should have handled the situation better. It is the duty of selectors to look after and stop these controversies. I am not sure if the selectors spoke to Virat before taking the decision,” concluded Lal.

Sourav Ganguly should give an explanation: Former India cricketer on Virat Kohli's ODI captaincy row

There are plenty of things happening in Indian cricket at present. With contrasting statements from Test captain Virat Kohli and BCCI chief Sourav Ganguly regarding the recent ODI captaincy switch and the former's T20I captaincy resignation, not everything is at ease in Indian cricket. Amid all this, the senior men's cricket team has arrived in South Africa where they play three Tests and as many ODIs, starting from December 26.

Under Kohli, India have won a Test series in Australia and gained an unassailable 2-1 lead over England in the incomplete five Tests early this year in the United Kingdom. Now, the focus has shifted to the SA Tests.

While India have won Test series in England, Australia (twice recently) and in New Zealand to date, they are yet to win a series in whites on South African soil. Thus, not only the experienced Indian campaigners will have to stand tall but even the young guns will have to contribute to script history.

Ahead of the SA Tests, which gets underway from December 26, BCCI chief Sourav Ganguly lauded Indian young batter Shreyas Iyer and is 'hopeful' of him delivering the goods overseas, starting from the series in the African nation.

For the unversed, Iyer had a memorable debut series versus New Zealand at home. He returned with 202 runs, at 50.50, to end as India's highest run-getter (second overall) with a fifty and hundred.

Real test will be in SA: BCCI chief Sourav Ganguly 'hopeful' of Indian batter delivering the goods overseas

Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) appointed the legendary Rahul Dravid as the new head coach of the Indian men's cricket team in November this year. Dravid replaced former head coach Ravi Shastri at the helm and has already guided India to back-to-back series wins against New Zealand at home.

While India clean swept the Black Caps 3-0 in the T20I series, they won the Test series 1-0. Reports of Dravid's likely appointment as the head coach of the team had gone viral months before he took over the role with many believing there was not much competition.

BCCI president Sourav Ganguly, who has previously spoken about how he managed to convince Dravid to take the India head coach job despite him not being interested initially, has revealed there was another Indian batting legend who was keen on taking the high-profile role.

"We had Rahul in mind for a long period of time, both me and Jay, but he wasn't agreeing because of the time away from home [and] because doing a national team's job is [about being] on the road for about 8-9 months in a year and he has two young children," Ganguly said on chat show Backstage with Boria.

He revealed Indian legend VVS Laxman was one of the former cricketers interested in the India head coach post. Laxman, who has not coached a national side before, has served as the mentor of Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL and has also worked as a batting consultant for Bengal in the domestic circuit.

Ganguly revealed Laxman wanted to work with the Indian team but things didn't work out for him to replace Shastri. The BCCI president also stated that the batting legend will get a chance to work with the national team in the future.

“He (Laxman) was keen on the national team job, but that couldn’t worked out. But somewhere down the line, he would have that opportunity to coach the national team," Ganguly added.

Not Rahul Dravid! Sourav Ganguly reveals another batting legend wanted India head coach job

The Board of Control for Cricket in Inda (BCCI) is not hurrying to make a statement or take a hasty decision amid the controversy surrounding Virat Kohli's removal as team India's ODI captain. Kohli was in the centre of an explosive press conference on Wednesday ahead of India's tour of South Africa where he came out clear on the rumours floating around regarding his sacking and also contradicted BCCI president Sourav Ganguly's claims.

Kohli during the press conference said he was never asked to not give up the T20I captaincy of the Indian team, contrary to Ganguly's claim that the BCCI president had personally spoken to Kohli to not step down. The Indian Test skipper also informed the journalists present in the presser that he was made aware of the change in ODI captaincy only 90 minutes before it was made official.

As per a report in PTI, no one in BCCI is happy with Kohli's comments during the press conference where he refuted the board's president's claims. While the cricket fraternity awaits BCCI's response in the matter, the board has decided not to take any hasty step which can impact the Indian team's morale ahead of the upcoming three-match Test series against South Africa.

"No statements, no press conference. We will deal with it, leave it to (the) BCCI," Ganguly had told reporters on Thursday when asked about Kohli's comments contradicting his claims.

As per PTI, the board president and BCCI secretary Jay Shah were on a video call with the BCCI office-bearers on Wednesday where Kohli's comments were discussed in detail and it was decided that the BCCI will not release any official statement or conduct a press conference in the matter.

"Expert opinion was taken on how to deal with the sensitive matter as it also involves the respect of a president's office. The BCCI knows that a Test series is round the corner and any hasty decision or statement from them could affect the morale of the team," a senior BCCI source told PTI.

Meanwhile, Kohli, who rubbished the reports of him taking a break and skipping the ODI series against South Africa, reassured that he will extend his full support to new limited-overs captain Rohit and head coach Rahul Dravid in taking Indian cricket forward.

Kohli also admitted that he understood why he was sacked as ODI captain as India failed to win an ICC trophy under his leadership.

BCCI not happy with Virat Kohli's comments but unlikely to take hasty step ahead of South Africa series

Indian cricket has been embroiled in controversy ever since the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed the change in captaincy in the ODIs. Virat Kohli was replaced by Rohit Sharma as the ODI captain of the side without any explanation from the selectors before BCCI president Sourav Ganguly clarified that the decision was taken as selectors didn't want two white-ball captains for the Indian team.

Ganguly also said he had personally requested Kohli to not give up T20I captaincy and continue leading the team. Kohli had announced his decision to step down as T20I captain in October this year and relinquished his role post the conclusion of the T20 World Cup 2021. However, in an explosive press conference ahead of the South Africa tour, Kohli broke his silence on the matter.

He refuted Ganguly's claims that he was requested not to step down as the T20I captain of the side and also said there was no prior communication from BCCI before the decision to remove him as ODI captain was taken. Kohli said he was informed only 1.5 hours before the decision was announced.

"Whatever was said about the communication that happened about the decision that was made was inaccurate. I was contacted one-and-a-half hours before the selection meeting on December 8 for the Test series and there was no prior communication to me at all since I announced my decision on T20I captaincy," Kohli had said.

"When I left the T20I captaincy, I had first approached BCCI and intimated them of my decision and laid down my point of view in front of them (office bearers). I gave the reasons why I wanted to quit T20 captaincy and my view point was received very nicely. There was no offence, no hesitation and not for once was I told that ‘you should not leave T20 captaincy’," added Kohli.

South Africa spinner Tabraiz Shamsi has reacted to the matter as he lauded the Indian Test captain for giving out his version of the story without fearing anyone. Kohli's version of the story is quite different from that of BCCI president Ganguly and many have praised the Test skipper for not taking the safe route.

Shamsi quoted a tweet from fan which read - "The safer option for Virat would’ve been to side with Ganguly’s version of the story. Clearly, Virat isn’t that kind of a person, on and off the field."

"This is why he is as good as he is”, Shami wrote while quoting the tweet as he lauded Kohli.

'Safer option would've been to side with Ganguly': Tabraiz Shamsi lauds Virat Kohli amid ODI captaincy row

A number of former cricketers have been recently involved in Indian cricket in coaching or a mentorship role. Since the arrival of former India captain Sourav Ganguly as the president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), former cricketers have been approached for various roles to continue strengthening Indian cricket.

While the likes of Anil Kumble and Ravi Shastri served as head coach of the side, the legendary MS Dhoni was part of the backroom staff as the Indian team's mentor for the T20 World Cup 2021.

Another Indian great Rahul Dravid is currently the head coach of the Indian team while VVS Laxman has taken over the new Director of Cricket at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru. BCCI president Ganguly has now hinted at the inclusion of none other than batting legend Sachin Tendulkar in an official role in Indian cricket.

While several stalwarts of the bygone era have served Indian cricket in some role or the other, Tendulkar has never returned to the Indian dressing room after retiring from international cricket. Ganguly recently opened up on Tendulkar's inclusion in Indian cricket is not that far away but 'conflict of interest' remains a big hurdle in making it happen.

"Sachin is obviously a bit different. He doesn't want to be involved in all this. I'm sure with Sachin's involvement in Indian cricket in some way, it can't be a better news than that. In what way that obviously needs to be worked out,' Ganguly said on the show Backstage with Boria.

"Because there is too much of conflict all around. Rightly or wrongly, anything and everything you do you have the word 'conflict' keeps jumping out of the window, some of which I find really really unrealistic. So you have to see the best way to keep the best talent involved in the game. And at some stage Sachin will also find a way to be involved in Indian cricket," he added.

Master Blaster to return? Sourav Ganguly hints at Sachin Tendulkar taking up new role in Indian cricket

Team India saw a big change early this month as BCCI removed Virat Kohli as the ODI skipper, appointing Rohit Sharma as the limited-overs captain altogether. For the unversed, Hitman had already succeeded Kohli as the T20I captain after the latter had made it clear that the World Cup would be his last assignment as the skipper in the shortest format.

Rohit, who has led Mumbai Indians (MI) to five IPL titles and has stood out as a leader for Team India in the limited opportunities, will look to end India's eight-year-long ICC-title drought. Under Kohli, India did brilliantly in bilateral series, played the 2017 Champions Trophy final and reached the semi-finals of the 2019 ODI World Cup before their disastrous performance in the 2021 T20 WC.

Speaking on Boria Majumdar's show Backstage with Boria, BCCI chief Sourav Ganguly has explained why Rohit deserves to be India's captain in the white-ball formats after Kohli. The BCCI president also made it clear that Rohit became the best choice post Kohli's resignation from the top post in T20Is.

"Five titles with Mumbai, another one with Deccan Chargers speak volumes of his ability under pressure. Once Virat decided he doesn't want to be part of T20 leadership, he was the best choice. He started well, beating NZ 3-0 in India. Hopefully, we will see a better result for India next year than what we saw this year,” Ganguly said.

He added, "To be honest, in 2017 Champions Trophy and 2019 World Cup, India was good. We were exceptional in the 2019 World Cup, one bad day and our entire hard work of two months was wiped away. I was disappointed with the way we played this World Cup (T20 WC 2021). It was the poorest we played in the past 4-5 years."

At present, Indian cricket isn't at a very good state following the ODI captaincy switch. There were reports of an alleged rift between Kohli and Rohit post the board's decision to sack the former from ODI captaincy. While Kohli denied all such rumours in a recent presser, he denied Ganguly's remark of being asked to reconsider resigning as the T20I captain. In addition, he stated of not having any prior communication with the board members and selectors before being removed as ODI skipper.

Hence, Indian team is dealing with a lot of outside noise ahead of their tour of South Africa. The national side, on Thursday (December 16), arrived in the African nation for the three Tests and ODIs each, starting from December 26.

Once Kohli decided to not be T20I skipper, Rohit was best choice for limited-overs captaincy: Ganguly

Indian cricket is in a mess at present. BCCI, on December 8, removed Virat Kohli as the ODI captain and appointed Rohit Sharma as the limited-overs captain. Following this, several reports claimed that Kohli and Rohit aren't sharing a good equation with each other whereas BCCI chief Sourav Ganguly claimed that he had personally spoken to Kohli to reconsider his decision of quitting as the T20I captain.

On Wednesday (December 15), Kohli addressed the media in BCCI's customary press conference before the national side's departure for South Africa where they play three Tests and ODIs each. Hence, Kohli rubbished rumours of any rift with Rohit but dropped a bomb by saying that he was never told to reconsider quitting as T20I skipper and was also not informed of his sacking as the ODI captain prior to the official announcement.

"The chief selector discussed the Test team to which we both agreed. Before ending the call, I was told that the five selectors have decided that I will not be the ODI captain to which I replied ‘okay fine'," Kohli claimed.

He further asserted, "When I left the T20I captaincy, I had first approached BCCI and intimated them of my decision and laid down my point of view in front of them (office bearers). I gave the reasons why I wanted to quit T20 captaincy and my view point was received very nicely. Thus, former Pakistan captain Salman Butt has now urged BCCI President Sourav Ganguly to come out in the open and respond so that the controversy can come to an end. “Ganguly needs to answer this for the betterment of Indian cricket. He is the President of the BCCI and Kohli contradicting him in public is not a small thing. On one hand, Ganguly said he had requested Kohli not to step down from T20 captaincy. But Kohli has now come out and claimed that no one from BCCI ever spoke to him about it. These are two completely contrasting statements. This is unrest," Butt said on his YouTube channel.

He added, "It is not a question of captaincy. Debate is not about Rohit taking over. He is a good captain and has proved himself at the international and IPL level. The procedure to pass on the responsibility from one great to another was not smooth. Unnecessary controversy has been created and there will be trust deficit between Kohli and Ganguly going ahead.”

'Kohli contradicting him in public....': Former Pak skipper urges Ganguly to 'answer' amid captaincy row

Virat Kohli, on Wednesday (December 15), interacted with the media in BCCI's customary press conference before Team India's departure for South Africa. In the presser, the 33-year-old tried to clear the air on many issues which have been prevalent in Indian cricket following the ODI captaincy switch.

During the presser, Kohli was asked to share if he had any communication with the BCCI prior to his sacking as the ODI captain and if the board members had asked him to reconsider his decision of quitting as the T20I captain. He, thus, denied having any proper communication in advance before his removal as the ODI skipper and even rubbished claims that he was asked to reconsider his decision of resigning as the captain in the shortest format. Thus, there have been many reactions post Kohli's explosive press conference.

Former Indian captain and World Cup-winning skipper Kapil Dev has now joined the bandwagon and reacted to Kohli's statements.

Talking to ABP News, Kapil said, "It is not good to point fingers on anybody at this point in time. The South Africa tour is coming and please pay attention to the tour. I would say board president is board president but yes, the Indian cricket team captain is also a big thing. But talking badly about each other in public, I don't think it is a good thing, whether it is Sourav or Kohli."

Please pay attention to SA tour: Kapil Dev schools Virat Kohli following his explosive press conference

Everything is not at its very best in Indian cricket thanks to the mess created following the ODI captaincy switch in senior men's team. On December 8, BCCI had removed Virat Kohli as the ODI captain and appointed Rohit Sharma as his successor.

Since then, many reports started flowing in that Kohli and Rohit are at loggerheads and there is an alleged rift between the duo. Hence, Kohli answered several questions of the media in BCCI's customary press conference before India's departure for the South Africa tour on Wednesday (December 15).

During the Q/A session with the media, Kohli opened up on whether he had any communication with the selectors and board members prior to his removal as ODI captain and if he was asked to reconsider his decision of quitting as the T20I skipper.

Hence, BCCI chief Sourav Ganguly received a lot of flak on social media platforms as he had earlier claimed to have spoken to Kohli to reconsider his decision of resigning as the T20I skipper. Hence, the BCCI president has now told News18, "I have no comments to make. The BCCI will deal with it appropriately."

Earlier, Ganguly had told News18, "I personally requested him (Kohli) not to give up the T20I captaincy. Obviously, he felt the workload. Which is fine, he has been a great cricketer, he has been very intense with his cricket. He has captained for a long period of time and these things happen. Because I have captained for a long period of time; therefore, I know.

"Also, they wanted only one white-ball captain. And that's why this decision. I don't know what's going to happen in future. But as I said, it's a good team and it has some fantastic players and I hope they will turn it around," he added.

Thus, Ganguly and Kohli's statements have been poles apart from each other as the tension is brewing in Indian cricket with each passing day. At present, India left for South Africa on Thursday (December 16) where the national side is set to play three Tests and equal number of ODIs, starting from December 26.

BCCI will deal with it appropriately: Sourav Ganguly reacts to Virat Kohli's remark on ODI captaincy row

Team India's Test captain Virat Kohli addressed the media in BCCI's customary press conference before the national side left for South Africa, for three Tests and equal number of ODIs. On Wednesday (December 15), the 33-year-old Kohli interacted with the press to clear the air on a number of issues pertaining to Indian cricket.

In recent times, there has been several changes in the men's cricket team with Rohit Sharma being appointed the limited-overs captain, resulting in Kohli's sacking as ODI skipper. Hence, rumours of alleged rift between Rohit and Kohli spread like wildfire before the latter rubbished all such claims in the press conference.

'This is.....' - Sunil Gavaskar reacts as Virat Kohli promises 'absolute support' to Rohit Sharma-Rahul Dravid

Indian cricket isn't at its best right now. Ever since BCCI removed Virat Kohli as the ODI captain, appointing Rohit Sharma in his place as the limited-overs captain, things haven't been very smooth. Many believe lack of proper communication has been the reason for contrasting statements made by Kohli and BCCI president Sourav Ganguly, following the ODI captaincy switch.

On Wednesday (December 15), Kohli addressed the media in BCCI's customary press conference before Team India's departure for South Africa. The Indian Test captain opened up on the ODI captaincy switch and also opined on quitting T20I captaincy. He maintained that he wasn't informed about his sacking as the ODI captain in advance and was also not asked to reconsider his decision of leaving T20I captaincy, as stated by Ganguly.

Kohli told the press, "I was communicated one and a half hours before the selection meeting (on Rohit being given the ODI captaincy). I was told that I will not be the ODI captain. There was no communication with me before that. We chatted briefly about it during the selection meet, but no communication about this was made before the selection meeting."

On stepping aside as T20I captain, he said, "I had told BCCI that I want to quit T20I captaincy. I wasn't told to reconsider it. It was received well, without any hesitation; I was told it's a progressive step and it's in the right direction. I had told them that I want to continue ODI and Test captaincy unless the office bearers think otherwise. I had given that option to them."

Thus, with contradictory claims from Kohli and Ganguly, Little Master Sunil Gavaskar has now joined the bandwagon and reacted to the developments.

Gavaskar told India Today, "I think it (Kohli’s comments) actually doesn’t bring the BCCI into the picture. I think it’s the individual who has to be asked where he got the impression he had conveyed such a message to Kohli. So that’s the only thing. Yes, he is the BCCI president and surely he should be asked why there is this discrepancy. He is probably the best person to ask about the discrepancy in what you seem to have to say and what the Indian captain has said."

"Yes, it always helps to have a clear line of communication so that there is no speculation. So from now, from what has happened, there should be a clear line of communication and the chairman of the selection committee can come down and say why he has been picked and why he has not been picked. Sometimes, even if that is not needed, a press release is also good enough. A good press release giving all the reasons makes life a lot easier," Gavaskar added.

Gavaskar further asserted, "As long as it’s not something that he has not found out from the media or as it happened in the past that the commander of a passenger flight announced it, I think he has been told by the chairman of the selection committee that he is not going to be the captain, I think that is absolutely okay."

"I don’t know what these people wanted to do. As long as there has been communication between the chairman of selection and him, it’s the decent thing to do. Over there, what the conversation was, I am not aware. Maybe the chairman of the selection committee also said ‘thank you so much," he concluded.

Virat Kohli's explosive presser: Ganguly should be asked why there is this discrepancy, says Gavaskar

On Wednesday (December 15), Virat Kohli interacted with the media in BCCI's customary press conference before India's departure to South Africa. Given that there have been some major developments in Indian cricket in the recent past, with not much communication from the board, Kohli's presser was keenly awaited and followed.

During the presser, Kohli opened up on losing ODI captaincy to Rohit Sharma, opined on Rohit as a limited-overs skipper, his availability for SA ODIs and also whether he had any word with the BCCI before stepping aside as the T20I captain, in mid-September.

'I wasn't told to...' - Virat Kohli contradicts BCCI chief Sourav Ganguly on resigning as India's T20I captain

On December 8, the BCCI dropped a bomb by removing Virat Kohli as the ODI captain. Many believe it was always on the cards after the 33-year-old had stepped down as the T20I captain, post the World Cup in the UAE, and the Indian cricket board made the official announcement as Kohli got replaced by Rohit Sharma. For the unversed, Rohit had already succeeded Kohli as the T20I captain and, thus, will serve as the limited-overs skipper.

Ahead of Team India's departure for South Africa, where they are scheduled to play three Tests and equal number of ODIs, Kohli interacted with the media in the customary press conference in Mumbai, on Wednesday (December 15), and opened up on losing ODI captaincy to Rohit.

Earlier, BCCI President Sourav Ganguly had also broken his silence on the ODI captaincy change and told ANI, "“It's a call that the BCCI and the selectors took together,” Ganguly told ANI. "Actually, the BCCI had requested Virat to not step down as the T20I skipper but obviously, he did not agree.
