Former Indian cricket team skipper Sourav Ganguly is regarded as one of the most successful captains to have led the national team. Ganguly took over the reins of Team India in the aftermath of the match-fixing controversy which had led to the ouster of former captain Mohammad Azharuddin. Ganguly went on to make India a force to reckon with under his leadership and gave the country a number of match-winners in the form of the likes of Yuvraj Singh, Harbhajan Singh, MS Dhoni and Virender Sehwag among others.

Ganguly managed to instil fighting spirit in the Indian team after taking over as captain and helped the team win some memorable matches both at home and overseas. India also became a great touring side under his leadership and went on to prove its mettle across different conditions.

While Ganguly had become one of the key members of the Indian team across formats himself when he took over as captain, he had a number of senior players to work with in his side during his stint as captain. The likes of Sachin Tendulkar, Azharuddin and Rahul Dravid were some of the big names in the Indian squad back then.

Recalling his days as captain of the Indian side, Ganguly explained the difference between being a captain and being a leader. Speaking at the Economic Times India Leadership Council, the current Board of for Cricket in India (BCCI) chief said captaincy to him was leading a team on the pitch while leadership was building a team both on and off the ground.

“There is a difference between being a captain and a leader, in a titular position as a captain, how did you make the seniors, and the youngsters believe in your leadership. Captaincy, to me, is leading a team on the ground, and leadership, to me, is building a team. So, whether I worked with Sachin, Azhar, or Dravid, I didn't compete with them; instead, I collaborated with them as leaders and shared responsibility," said Ganguly.

India achieved numerous feats under Ganguly's captaincy, including the famous Natwest Triumph in 2022 and reaching the final of the ICC ODI World Cup in 2003. India also won the Champions Trophy under Ganguly in 2002.

Ganguly said there was no dearth of talent in the side when he was the captain but it was important to give the players a fair amount of exposure to showcase their skills. He further stated that for him the career of his teammates were equally valuable as his own as he knew what it took to play for the country.

"But talent without exposure is nothing. I had some great players under me who could have gone on to become captain at any time, and I was fortunate enough to meet those great players, so I saw it not only as an honour but also as an opportunity to change things, to make it an even platform for everyone to express themselves," said the current BCCI chief.

"When you select an individual, you firstly selected them based on their abilities, and second, you selected them to succeed. And for me, their career was as important as mine because I know what it took to get here, to represent India,” he added.

'I didn't compete with Sachin, Dravid': Sourav Ganguly on difference between being a captain and a leader

Sourav Ganguly is regarded as one of the finest Indian captains of all time. Ganguly is often credited for backing the youngsters during his time as captain of the Indian side and several players have over the years thanked Ganguly for playing a role in shaping their careers. The likes of Yuvraj Singh, Harbhajan Singh, Virender Sehwag and MS Dhoni among others were all backed by Ganguly as youngsters and went on to become greats of the game.

Ganguly's ability to trust his players and back them even at their worst often paid rich dividends for the Indian team as they registered come memorable victories both at home and away from home. Former India spinner Harbhajan, who also shone under Ganguly's captaincy, recently revealed how he once saved the former captain from getting sacked.

Harbhajan made his international debut for India in March 1998 and quickly became one of the mainstays of India's bowling attack under Ganguly. However, while he had talent, he was too young to be trusted in a Test series against Australia in 2001 and there were question marks over his place in the Indian squad.

Harbhajan claimed had Ganguly not backed him and kept him in the squad for the 2001 Australia Test series at home, India might not have won and Ganguly could have been sacked as captain. Harbhajan made the revelation while speaking on Sportskeeda recently.

“Had Ganguly not backed me, he wouldn't have won that series (2001 vs Australia) and would have been sacked from captaincy. He came like God for me and held my hand and I went on with my job. It helped both my career and his as a captain as he got the extension. He did help me in giving a chance, but then it's up to the player to make it count," said the former India spinner.

Harbhajan turned out to be India's hero in the 2001 Test against Australia after making the cut into the playing XI following an injury to Anil Kumble. He went on to pick up 32 wickets in the series, including a hat-trick at the Eden Gardens as India won 2-1.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) president Sourav Ganguly hinted at starting a new chapter in life in a cryptic post on Twitter that went viral on Wednesday (June 01). IPL 2022 edition came to a fitting end on Sunday evening (May 29) when the Hardik Pandya-led Gujarat Titans (GT) beat Rajasthan Royals (RR) by seven wickets at the iconic Narendra Modi Cricket Stadium, Ahmedabad to win their maiden title in their first-ever IPL season.

The 15th season of the IPL was a special affair, which comprised two more teams -- Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) and eventual winners Gujarat. It saw as many as 74 games being held across Mumbai, Pune, Kolkata and Ahmedabad and was a hugely successful season, with not much hurdles due to Covid-19, as all ten teams produced some emphatic contests.

While players, support staff, commentators and organisers have been lauded, the Sourav Ganguly-led BCCI have won hearts by rewarding the 'unsung heroes', i.e. the groundsmen and curators for their overall efforts in ensuring the best quality of grounds and pitches were prepared for the players.

BCCI announces whopping cash prize for 'unsung heroes' groundsmen & curators after IPL 2022's success

Virat Kohli's 71st international hundred has been keenly awaited since 2019. The last time he played an IPL game at the iconic Eden Gardens, Kolkata, it was during the 2019 edition where the then Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) captain had returned with an impressive ton in his side's win over hosts Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in a high-scoring thriller.

Thus, when Kohli stepped on the field for his first-ever IPL game at the stadium on Wednesday evening (May 25), when RCB faced Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in IPL 2022 Eliminator, many banked on the star batter to replicate his 2019 success. He, however, fell for a 24-ball 25, laced with 2 fours, before Rajat Patidar's 112* propelled RCB to 207-4. In reply, KL Rahul's LSG were restricted to 193-6 to lose by 14 runs.

Umran Malik's meteoric rise has been one of the major talking points from the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022. The Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) pacer impressed with his raw pace by consistently clocking in excess of 150 kmph and rattled some of the best batters in the league. The 22-year-old fast bowler from Jammu & Kashmir also earned his maiden call up to the Indian team on the back of his impressive run for SRH in IPL 2022.

Speaking about Umran's rise this season, Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) president Sourav Ganguly said the fast bowler's future lies in his own hands and that he will have to ensure his fitness and pace remains unaffected to continue playing for Team India for a long time.

Dubbed as the next big thing in Indian cricket, Umran's ability to consistently clock over 150 kmph makes him a stand out fast bowler. While he finished his IPL 2022 campaign as the leading wicket-taker for SRH with 22 wickets from 14 matches, he also holds the record for bowling the fastest delivery of the season at 157 kmph.

“His future is in his hands. If he stays fit and bowls at this pace, I’m sure he will be around for a long time,” Ganguly said talking about Umran's rise in IPL 2022.

'He will be around for a long time': BCCI president Sourav Ganguly reacts to Umran Malik's rise in IPL 2022

At the time of MS Dhoni's sabbatical, post the 2019 ODI World Cup, many had their doubts about Rishabh Pant's abilities and whether he would be able to fill in the humongous shoes of the former. Nonetheless, the 24-year-old Pant has stepped up his game since late 2020 and is now raising his stature slowly and steadily for India across formats.

Hence, Pant is already India's first-choice keeper-batter in all forms of the game and is now even being trusted with leadership roles. Thus, the left-hander has served as India's vice-captain in the recent home series and has been named as KL Rahul's deputy in the forthcoming home T20Is versus South Africa. Moreover, he is handling captaincy duties for the Delhi Capitals (DC) in the IPL as well. Thus, comparisons are bound to happen between Pant and his idol Dhoni.

Nonetheless, BCCI chief and former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly have urged the people to refrain from making 'unfair' comparisons between Pant and Dhoni.

"Don't compare Pant with MS Dhoni. Dhoni has so much experience, has captained 500-plus games in IPL, Tests and ODIs. So it's not fair for Rishabh to be compared with Dhoni," Ganguly told reporters before Qualifier 1 of IPL 2022, where Rajasthan Royals lost to Gujarat Titans at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Tuesday (May 24).

Talking about Pant, he ended IPL 15 with 340 runs at a strike rate of 151. Under him, DC ended at the fifth spot and missed out on qualifying for the playoffs with a defeat at the hands of bottom-ranked Mumbai Indians (MI) in their last league stage encounter. ALSO READ | David Miller stars as Gujarat Titans beat Rajasthan Royals by 7 wickets to secure a spot in IPL 2022 final Nonetheless, BCCI chief and former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly have urged the people to refrain from making 'unfair' comparisons between Pant and Dhoni. Under him, DC ended at the fifth spot and missed out on qualifying for the playoffs with a defeat at the hands of bottom-ranked Mumbai Indians (MI) in their last league stage encounter. Pant will now shift his focus on the India-SA home series, which gets underway on June 09.

It's unfair for Rishabh Pant to be compared with MS Dhoni, says BCCI chief Sourav Ganguly

Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma's struggles with the bat were quite evident in the recently-concluded league stage of the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022. While Rohit endured his worst ever season with the bat in IPL history as his team Mumbai Indians (MI) were knocked out of the tournament early, Kohli too hasn't managed to score runs consistently for Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB). Their poor form with the willow is also a huge concern for the Indian team going forward.

However, Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCC) president Sourav Ganguly is not losing his sweat over Kohli and Rohit's rough patch and has backed the duo to bounce back strongly. Kohli and Rohit have been two of India's best batters across formats and have been among the runs consistently over the years in international cricket.

While they were expected to deliver for the respective sides in the ongoing IPL 2022, both the superstars failed to make an impact. Rohit failed to score even a single half-century throughout the season as he finished with just 268 runs from 14 matches at a poor average of 19.14 and a strike rate of over 120.

Kohli, on the other hand, has been dismissed on golden ducks as many as 3 times in 14 matches so far for RCB this season. The batting maestro has amassed only 309 runs at an average of 23.77 and a strike rate of just over 117. Kohli still has a few games in his hands to end the season on a high as RCB have made it to the playoffs.

"They are very good players. I'm sure they will be back among runs. They play so much of cricket that at times they go out of form. Kohli played very well in the last game, especially when it was required for RCB. That's why he (Kohli) was so happy that RCB qualified," Ganguly said at a promotional event speaking about Kohli and Rohit's rough patch.

"They are all great players, it's a matter of time they will be at their best," the BCCI president added.

Rohit's failure to provide them with good starts at the top resulted in Mumbai Indians' bowling out of the competition early this season. The five-time champions got off to a woeful start in their campaign as they lost as many as eight matches in a row before winning four out of their remaining six games.

Kohli's struggles were undermined at RCB due to the good form of skipper Faf du Plessis, Glenn Maxwell and Dinesh Karthik, who has been phenomenal in the role of a finisher for the franchise this season. RCB will take on Lucknow Super Giants in the Eliminator at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Wednesday (May 25).

BCCI president Sourav Ganguly reacts to Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma's rough patch in IPL 2022

Since the 2000s, Indian men's cricket has been blessed with some brilliant captains which have led to the national side's resounding success. While Sourav Ganguly had to start from scratch after taking over post the match-fixing saga, Rahul Dravid and Anil Kumble did well for a brief period before MS Dhoni took over and later passed on the baton to Virat Kohli. Kohli recently resigned from captaincy from two formats and was sacked as an ODI skipper as Rohit Sharma has succeeded him across all forms of the game.

Every Indian captain, since the 2000s, has had unique qualities. Recently, former Indian opener Virender Sehwag compared the captaincy styles of Ganguly and Kohli and made a bold claim. Sehwag, who was also Dhoni's deputy for a long time, feels while Ganguly built a new team and backed players to the core, Kohli didn't do the same despite enjoying some good success in the skipper's role.

“Sourav Ganguly built a new team, brought in new players and backed them through their highs and lows,” Sehwag told Sports 18. “I doubt if Kohli did that in his tenure.” He added, "In my opinion, the #1 captain is the one who builds a team and gives confidence to his players. He (Kohli) backed some players, some he did not."

Sourav Ganguly built a new team, doubt if Virat Kohli did the same as captain, says Virender Sehwag

Virender Sehwag was a special talent. Making a mark in a batting line-up comprising members of India's golden era, such as Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, Sourav Ganguly and VVS Laxman was never going to be easy for anyone. However, Sehwag had his own way of approaching the game and played his own way despite many criticism.

While Sehwag excelled in the ODI format, and also struck at 145.38 in 19 T20Is for India, he exceeded expectations with his performances in the purest format of the game. Not having a textbook technique, Sehwag surprised one and all by amassing 8,586 runs in whites, striking at a whopping 82.23 along with 23 tons and 32 fifties.

Recently, speaking to Sports 18, Sehwag opined that while the likes of SRT, Dravid, Ganguly and others scored centuries in 150-200 balls, he reached the milestone lot earlier than them, helping him in creating his own identity. "Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, VVS Laxman, Sourav Ganguly all would score their centuries playing 150-200 balls. If I scored hundreds at the same rate, no one would remember me. I had to score runs faster than them to create my identity,” said Sehwag, who represented India in 104 Tests and ended with an average of 49.34.

While many batters tend to slow down or play cautiously en route a triple-figure mark, Sehwag continued to play fearless cricket and continued to take on the bowlers by sticking to his approach. In this regard, he added, "I always thought that if I stayed till the end of the day, I should score 250 runs, and in that process, I obviously would have to cross 100, 150, 200 and so on. So, there was no pressure in hitting a ball to or over the fence in the nineties because the goal was not to stop at 100."

The IPL 2022 edition has been a huge hit so far. Like every other season, there have been a plethora of young and uncapped players who have excelled in their respective departments and done well for their teams. On the other hand, many veteran and out-of-favour players have also made a mark.

Among the young talents, the likes of Umran Malik, Kuldeep Sen, Ayush Badoni, Abhishek Sharma, Tilak Verma, Mukesh Choudhary, Maheesh Theekshana, etc. have done well. Thus, BCCI chief Sourav Ganguly also shared his thoughts on the young players who have been very impressive and named two uncapped Indian pacers who have won him with their performances. In this regard, he named Sunrisers Hyderabad's (SRH) Umran and Rajasthan Royals' (RR) Kuldeep Sen.

"How many can bowl at 150 km? Not many. I won’t be surprised if he gets picked for the national team. We have to be careful in using him, though. Umran is the fastest. I also like Kuldip Sen. Also, T Natarajan has made comeback. We will have Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami. Finally, it is up to the selectors,” said Ganguly while speaking to Mid Day.

IPL 2022: BCCI chief Sourav Ganguly names two uncapped Indian players who impressed him the most

India and Pakistan share one of the greatest rivalries in cricket history. Any contest between the arch-rivals at the international level is a blockbuster affair with millions of fans watching across the globe. The two teams have produced some of the most memorable cricketing encounters over the years but do not play any bilateral cricket against each other anymore.

India and Pakistan last played a bilateral series between them in 2013 and have since met only in major ICC competitions due to the political tensions between the two nations. Recently, former Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chief Tauqir Zia claimed the BCCI has never refused to play against Pakistan and that the problem lies at the 'government-to-government' level.

Tauqir opened up on the strained bilateral ties between India and Pakistan and claimed BCCI has never refused to play against Pakistan. He also stated that both current BCCI chief Sourav Ganguly and PCB chief Ramiz Raja want to promote cricket together. Both Ganguly and Raja are former cricketers turned administrators for their respective countries.

"BCCI has never refused to play against us [Pakistan]. The problem lies on the government-to-government level. Both cricketing boards are currently run by former cricketers who understand the importance of Pakistan-India matches. Sourav Ganguly and Ramiz Raja both want to promote cricket and there is nothing better than seeing a contest between these rivals," Tauqir told Cricket Pakistan.

PCB chief Raja had recently proposed a four-nation tournament involving India, Pakistan, England and Australia at ICC's annual meeting. However, his proposal was rejected. Sharing his views on the prospects of a four-nation tournament, Tauqir said the decision from ICC is understandable considering there is not much room left for such a tournament with the calendar already stacked up due to T20 franchise cricket across the globe.

"Although the four-nation series was a great idea there are already so many franchise-model tournaments happening throughout the year. Because of this, I do not think there will be enough room left to gather the four nations in one timeframe," said the former PCB chief.

Former Pakistan cricket team skipper Rashid Latif believes that Rishabh Pant can be the perfect choice to replace Rohit Sharma as the white-ball captain for India in the future. Latif went on to compare his ‘out-of-box’ thinking with greats like Mohammad Azharuddin, MS Dhoni and Sourav Ganguly while suggesting that the unique way of thinking makes him a perfect candidate.

“KL Rahul is a good option. He has led the Punjab side in the IPL efficiently in the past. But I think India should look at a younger option in white-ball cricket. Maybe someone like Rishabh Pant, if he is able to maintain his fitness,” Latif said on his official YouTube channel.

Latif also picked Hardik Pandya as another option for the white-ball captaincy but added that it depends on his fitness and how consistently he can keep bowling. "Otherwise, if he can bowl consistently, even Hardik Pandya is a good option for India in white-ball captaincy,” Latif said.

BCCI president Sourav Ganguly was all praise for Sunrisers Hyderabad fast bowler Umran Malik as he called the youngster from Srinagar the ‘face of the league’ when it comes to Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022.

Malik has been a revelation for SRH in this year’s competition with 15 wickets in just seven matches to his name and his express pace has been the source of concern for almost every batsman in the competition.

Ganguly, who also praised debutants Gujarat Titans and Lucknow Super Giants for their performances, said that Umran Malik, Umesh Yadav and Khaleel Ahmed have been quite impressive.

"Oh, it’s very interesting, I am watching (the IPL). Any team can win, and everyone is playing well. The two new teams- Gujarat Titans and Lucknow Super Giants-are doing well. Umran Malik’s bowling has been eye-catching. Umesh Yadav, too, has bowled well, and so has Khaleel Ahmed. I would say Umran Malik has been the outstanding face of the league so far," Ganguly told News18.

IPL 2022: 'Face of the league' - Sourav Ganguly showers massive praise over young fast bowler

Team India's superstars Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma are woefully out of form in IPL 2022. While Mumbai Indians' (MI) skipper Rohit has only 153 runs in eight matches, Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB)'s former captain Virat Kohli has only amassed 128 runs in nine outings, at an average of 16.

With Kohli and Rohit both out of form, there is concern among Indian cricket fans with the T20 World Cup set to be held in Australia later this year. Amid all this, BCCI chief Sourav Ganguly has reacted to Rohit and Kohli's barren run. The former Indian captain feels both the players are too good to miss out for long and will soon be among runs.

'Hope they start scoring runs' - Sourav Ganguly backs under-fire duo Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma to regain form

Yuvraj Singh had a stellar career for Team India. Making his debut in 2000, the swashbuckling all-rounder retired in 2019 after having played his last game in 2017. While he couldn't be a regular in the Test line-up, Yuvraj is regarded as one of the best white-ball players.

Yuvraj made his international debut during the Sourav Ganguly-led Team India's ICC Knockout Trophy campaign, in Nairobi. In the quarter-final game, the former all-rounder made his presence felt against a solid Australian line-up. The then 18-year-old Yuvraj returned with a match-winning 84 to be adjudged Player-of-the-Match and guided India to a 20-run win over the Men in Yellow.

Nonetheless, Yuvraj had a sleepless night before his debut game. Recalling the night before the encounter, Singh said he could not sleep the whole night. The then skipper Ganguly had asked the southpaw whether he would be interested in opening the innings. To this, Yuvi had also given his nod.

“Yeah, if you want me to open, I’ll open,” Singh told Sports 18's Home of Heroes. “Whole night I didn’t sleep.”

“I was batting at No. 5, very nervous. But when I went into bat, focus turned to watching the ball,” recalled Yuvraj who faced the likes of Brett Lee, Glenn McGrath, Jason Gillespie along with Australians' sledging. However, Yuvi went past all obstacles and was even given a reprieve at 37 as he made a memorable start to his international career. “If I today would’ve scored 37 on my debut against Australia, I would’ve been very happy because of the attack that I was facing,” Yuvraj asserted. “Luckily, I went on to score 84, I don’t know how, just watched the ball, hit the ball. It was a very big moment for me, to beat Australia and get the Man-of-the-Match award,” he added.

India and Pakistan haven't played a bilateral series since early 2013. Due to the political tension between the neighbouring countries, both sides continue to meet each other only in multi-nation or ICC events. During last year's T20 World Cup, in the UAE, the two Asian giants squared off against each other in the Super 12 round, which was a sellout in no time.

Thus, Pakistan Cricket Board's (PCB) chairman Ramiz Raja remains hopeful of a fruitful talk with the Sourav Ganguly-led Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to convince their counterpart for a bilateral series in 2024-25. For the unversed, PCB will hold talks with the BCCI in Dubai, from April 7-10, and is expecting a favourable response from the latter, keeping politics aside.

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Ramiz Raja is still hopeful of reviving bilateral cricket between India and Pakistan through a four-nation tournament that he had proposed last year. After the conclusion of the T20 World Cup 2021 last year, the PCB chief had taken to Twitter to inform that he was going to propose an annual four-nation T20I series involving India, Pakistan, England and Australia to the ICC.

However, when asked about the PCB chief's plan, BCCI secretary Jay Shah had earlier this year had termed it a 'short-term commercial initiative' while hinting that BCCI had no plans to be part of the series. However, Raja has not given up hopes on convincing the BCCI to let India also be part of the tournament and has said he will soon hold talks regarding the same with BCCI president Sourav Ganguly.

India and Pakistan, who share one of the greatest rivalries in cricket, have not played against each other in a bilateral series since 2013 due to the political tensions between the two nations. However, Raja believes politics should be kept aside when it comes to cricket as he gears up to talk to Ganguly during the upcoming Asian Cricket Council (ACC) meeting in Dubai on March 19.

Raja also stated that if India does not agree to be part of the tournament, he will propose an annual three-nation event involving Pakistan, England and Australia.

"I will talk to Sourav Ganguly about it when we meet for the ACC meeting in Dubai. Both of us are former captains and players and for us, cricket is not about politics. Even if India does not go with us on this proposal, we will think about launching an annual three-nation event with Australia and England in Pakistan," Raja told reporters in Karachi, as per PTI.

India and Pakistan have met each other only in major ICC events since 2013. The last meeting between the two sides came during the T20 World Cup 2021 last year where Babar Azam-ed Pakistan defeated India by ten wickets to register their first win against their arch-rivals in World Cup history.

Pakistan have also won the hosting rights for the 2022 edition of the Asia Cup and is confident of India visiting Pakistan for the tournament. However, the PCB chief admitted they will have to find some other way if BCCI refuses to send the Indian team to Pakistan.

"I think they will come and if they don't travel to Pakistan we will see what can be done," said Raja.

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Ramiz Raja is still hopeful of reviving bilateral cricket between India and Pakistan through a four-nation tournament that he had proposed last year.

Rohit Sharma to join Virat Kohli, MS Dhoni in elite list in India's pink-ball Test vs Sri Lanka

Rohit Sharma started his Test captaincy tenure as India locked horns with Sri Lanka in the two-match series opener at the IS Bindra Stadium, Mohali on Friday (March 04). The 34-year-old was appointed as the full-time Indian skipper after the national selectors named him as Virat Kohli's successor in whites last month.

With the commencement of his Test captaincy tenure, Rohit became the 35th Indian cricketer to lead the men's side in the purest format. He joined the elite list of legendary captains -- comprising Kohli, MS Dhoni, Anil Kumble, Rahul Dravid, Sourav Ganguly, Md Azharuddin, Ajit Wadekar, MK Pataudi, Sunil Gavaskar, etc. -- with his Test captaincy debut.

Talking about the same at the coin toss, Rohit said, "It is a huge honour to be captaining India and be part of the list. It is something I never dreamt of." Hitman won the toss in his historic Test match as India opted to bat first versus the Dimuth Karunaratne-led Islanders.

"Virat’s had a great journey. Starting 10-11 years ago and getting to where he has reached today is an exceptional achievement. On behalf of BCCI and also a former captain and player who has played 100 Test matches and more, I wish him all the very best," Ganguly added. "He has had a fantastic career and he is still got some time left to achieve the greater milestone and I hope he continues doing that. Congratulations to him, his family, his coach and all those who were involved in his cricketing career," he concluded.

Kohli also reacted to his historic feat. In a video posted by the BCCI, on Thursday (March 03), he said, "I honestly never thought I would play 100 Test matches. It has been a long journey. We played a lot of cricket over the course of playing those 100 Test matches. A lot of international cricket. I am just grateful that I've been able to make it to 100. God has been kind. I have worked really hard for my fitness. It's a big moment for me, for my family, for my coach, who is also very happy and very proud of this Test match as long as I am concerned."

"I never grew up thinking that I have to score small runs, the idea was to score big runs. I scored a lot of double hundreds in junior cricket. My idea was to bat long and I enjoyed doing that. These things took a lot out of you and it revealed your true character. Test cricket needed to stay alive, for me, this is real cricket," he added.

Virat Kohli will become the 12th Indian to enter the 100-Test club when he takes on the field during the national side's first Test versus Sri Lanka, in Mohali, on March 04. The 33-year-old will join an elite list of Indians, spearheaded by Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar, by featuring in his 100th outing in whites. Kohli will join Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, Sunil Gavaskar, VVS Laxman, Dilip Vengsarkar, Kapil Dev, Anil Kumble, Sourav Ganguly, Virender Sehwag, Harbhajan Singh and Ishant Sharma in the 100-Test club. So far, he has amassed 7,962 runs in 99 games -- at an average of over 50 -- with 27 hundreds and 28 half-centuries. Along with his splendid run with the bat, Kohli is also India's most successful Test captain. He signed off as the Test captain recently, resigning from the post earlier this year, with 40 wins from 68 encounters. Ahead of his landmark Test match, BCCI chief Ganguly heaped praise on Kohli and shared a special message for him. Great moment for Indian cricket: Ganguly shares special message for Kohli ahead of his 100th Test - WATCH

Virat Kohli set to play 100th Test: Reliving former Indian captain's impressive run in whites

BCCI President Sourav Ganguly has lauded Virat Kohli as the former captain is set to play his 100th Test during the forthcoming India-Sri Lanka series opener in Mohali, which gets underway on March 4 (Friday). Ahead of the Test series, which also marks the captaincy debut of Rohit Sharma in whites, Ganguly heaped praise on Kohli.

“To begin with, you need to be a very good player to get there,” Ganguly said while on a holiday with his family in London. “Very few people in Indian cricket have played 100 Test matches. It’s a fantastic landmark. Virat is a great player and deserves every bit of it.”

The former Indian captain Ganguly asserted, “I haven’t played with him. But I have always followed his game. Having been involved in different capacities, I have always tracked his cricket. I have seen his career from when it started and how it took a different turn after a few years and it has now gone to greatness."

Kohli has often been compared with Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar. Having played along with Tendulkar, Ganguly brushed aside all comparisons and said, "Expectations will always be there when you play at this level. I don’t compare different generations. But whatever number he has batted, whether it is No.4 in Test matches or No.3 in limited-overs cricket, he has batted marvelously."

He added, "His technique, his positivity, his footwork, his balance…I like all of that. Above all, the way Virat changed his game after 2014 in England when he was struggling. I saw that Test series because I was working as a commentator there. And he had a remarkable five years after that. That’s what normally happens. I saw that with Rahul Dravid between 2002 to 2005. You see great players having these phases where they are at their peak. Sachin had many.”

Interestingly, Kohli's 100th Test will also be his first as a player after seven long years of his captaincy tenure in whites. In this regard, Ganguly said, "It does require some adjustments. But I don’t think it’s very difficult. He will come back and get hundreds. I know about all this talk, with him not getting a hundred for over two years. But he is too good a player to consistently go through this. He will get past this phase too. He knows how to get hundreds otherwise he would not have got 70 of them. As a former player, I know he will start scoring them again. He has enormous ability, so it’s a matter of time."

Kohli will become the 12th Indian to enter the 100-Test club. He will, thus, join the likes of Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, Ganguly, VVS Laxman, Virender Sehwag, Harbhajan Singh, Kapil Dev, Sunil Gavaskar, Ishant Sharma, Dilip Vengsarkar and Anil Kumble.

India will, thus, look to give Kohli a perfect present on his landmark Test with a thumping win in the series opener versus the Islanders. The second and final Test will be held in Bengaluru, from March 12-16.

Sourav Ganguly lauds Virat Kohli as former captain set to play 100th Test during SL series opener

Wriddhiman Saha has warned the 'respected' journalist, who threatened him for not giving an interview, and stated that he will not take such a behaviour if repeated. He, however, has chosen to not reveal his/her identity this time around.

On February 19, Saha wasn't named in India's squad for the two-match Test series versus Sri Lanka, which gets underway on March 04 in Mohali. Following his omission, Saha revealed that a well-known journalist is threatening him after the veteran cricketer didn't entertain his/her request for an interview. Thus, the 37-year-old didn't hold back and shared a screenshot of his conversation with the journalist.

Back then, Saha took to his official Twitter handle where he shared a picture of the chat and captioned the post, "After all of my contributions to Indian cricket..this is what I face from a so-called “Respected” journalist! This is where the journalism has gone."

While many former cricketers -- such as Ravi Shastri, Virender Sehwag, Harbhajan Singh, Aakash Chopra, etc. -- urged Saha to reveal the identity of the journalist, the veteran keeper-batter Saha has chosen to not share any further detail but left a stern warning for him/her. He took to his official Twitter handle, on Tuesday evening (February 22), and wrote, "I was hurt and offended. I thought not to tolerate such kind of behaviour and didn’t want anyone to go through these kind of bullying. I decided I will go out and expose the chat in public eye, but not his/her name. My nature isn't such that I will harm anyone to the extent of ending someone’s career. So on grounds of humanity looking at his/her family, I am not exposing the name for the time being. But if any such repetition happens, I will not hold back."

"I thank each and everyone who has shown support and extended their willingness to help. My gratitude," he added.

It will be interesting to see if Saha reveals the name of the journalist to the Sourav Ganguly-led BCCI.
