‘I was surprised’ – Sourav Ganguly opens up on Virat Kohli's decision to step down as India's T20I skipper

Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) president Sourav Ganguly on Friday (October 22) confirmed that Rahul Dravid's appointment as the new head coach of the Indian men's cricket team is not imminent yet. Ganguly revealed Dravid has asked for some time to decide whether he wants to replace Ravi Shastri or not and that there is no confirmation on his appointment yet.

Recently reports had stated that Dravid had agreed to become the new head coach of the Indian cricket team and will take over from Shastri, whose contract is set to expire post the conclusion of the ICC T20 World Cup 2021 in UAE and Oman. However, Ganguly said Dravid, who had earlier said he was not interested in the role, is yet to make his final call.

Dravid is currently the head of the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru and is expected to step down from the post if he decides to apply for the India head coach position. Ganguly said the batting legend, who has previously coached the India A and India U-19 teams, will apply if he wants to.

"There is no confirmation (On Dravid becoming coach)," Ganguly was quoted as saying by India Today.

"If he wants to apply, he will apply, the process has to happen. For now, he is the coach of NCA and I believe NCA has a big role to play in Indian cricket. I have spoken to him earlier about this as well and he was not that interested and I feel the situation is still the same. He has asked for some time, let's see what happens," he added.

Recently, reports had also claimed that former India batter VVS Laxman was offered the role of the NCA head as BCCI has already started looking for a replacement for Dravid. However, Laxman turned down the offer and is likely to continue as the mentor of Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL and the batting consultant of Bengal in domestic circuit.

They have made a place for themselves with their performances and the more these players are involved in Indian cricket, the better it will be for the sport here," explained Ganguly.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will be looking to bring the Indian Premier League (IPL) back to India after hosting the second leg of the 14th edition successfully in UAE this year. Due to COVID-19, the last couple of editions of the IPL have been played outside the country. While the complete tournament from start to end was hosted in the UAE last year, IPL 2021 kicked off in India earlier this year before it had to be shifted to the UAE due to COVID-19.

It was the first edition of IPL which was played across two legs in two different countries. It's India's tournament: Sourav Ganguly hopeful of BCCI staging IPL 2022 in India with packed stadiums

Sourav Ganguly, former Team India captain and current president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has given his valuable insight over India's expected run in the upcoming T20 World Cup and the chances of winning the coveted trophy.

As India is all set to open their T20 WC campaign with a blockbuster clash against arch-rivals Pakistan on October 24, Ganguly said the talented Indian cricket team can be considered a contender and it only needs to show a bit of maturity to claim the trophy.

During a conversation, the 49-year-old Ganguly was asked about what the Indian team should do to win the title, to which the former left-handed batter replied that the team just have to be "mentally in good space" to win the World Cup.

"You don't become champions easily and you just don't become champions just by stepping into a tournament, so they have to get through the process, they have to show maturity," Ganguly said while speaking after Games24x7, a multi-game platform launched a new campaign — titled 'Game Ke Deewane'.

'You don't become champions easily': Sourav Ganguly gives his take on India's prospects of winning T20 WC

Ravi Shastri has hinted at not extending his tenure as Team India's head coach post the 2021 T20 World Cup, in the UAE. Among the various names that are doing the rounds as to who will replace Shastri, former Indian captain-cum-coach Anil Kumble's name has also cropped up once again.

For the unversed, Kumble was replaced by Shastri following the former Indian spinner's fallout with Virat Kohli in mid-2017. However, as per a report, the Punjab Kings (PBKS) coach isn't keen on reclaiming the top job in Indian cricket.

Over the years, Team India have been blessed with some brilliant captains. Post the match-fixing scandal, Indian cricket was reinvented during the Sourav Ganguly-era. Under Ganguly, India started competing while playing overseas at regular intervals and reached the final of the 2003 World Cup.

Apart from this, India ended as joint-winners of the 2002 Champions Trophy, won the 2002 Natwest Trophy, Test series versus Pakistan (in 2004) in the neighbouring country and drew the away series in Australia and England. However, India didn't win ICC titles during the current BCCI President's captaincy tenure. India weren't regarded as one of the strongest teams, in terms of temperament needed for winning ICC or multi-nation finals.

Nonetheless, Ganguly backed a whole lot of youngsters such as Yuvraj Singh, Virender Sehwag, Mohammed Kaif, Irfan Pathan, Harbhajan Singh, Zaheer Khan, Ashish Nehra, MS Dhoni, etc. All of them made a mark in their respective careers and served the national side for long.

After Ganguly, and Rahul Dravid's tenure, MS Dhoni took over. His astute leadership skills, calm and composed nature and ability to switch between being aggressive and defensive in his tactics won praises from all corners. Under him, India won all ICC titles but slipped way behind in Tests while playing overseas. Moreover, while he did a fabulous job, half of the side he got was groomed by Ganguly-Dravid & Co.

Recently, Virender Sehwag named the better captain among the two cricketers. He said on RJ Raunak's Youtube show "13 Jawab Nahi", "I feel captaincy-wise, both of them were great. But I feel the best amongst the two was Ganguly because he built the team from the onset, took in new players, and rebuilt a unit. He taught India to win matches abroad, we drew Test matches, won some abroad under him."

“Dhoni was lucky in the sense that he got the same team to lead that Ganguly had nurtured, so they both were great but better was Sourav Ganguly,” he added.

While opinions may differ and the debate might go on for long, it is safe to say both Ganguly and Dhoni deserve a lot of credit for taking India to the top since 2000.

From Sourav Ganguly to Sachin Tendulkar: Former Indian cricketers laud Virat-led team after 'fantastic' Lord's win

Former skipper of the Indian cricket team and the current Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) president Sourav Ganguly got nostalgic as he watched India play on Day 1 of the second Test match against England at the iconic Lord's Cricket Ground.

Ganguly took to social media to share a collage of some old pictures of him at Lord's as a player, as a captain and then as an administrator. On his Instagram account, Ganguly wrote, "Came here as player first in 1996 ..and then as captain..enjoyed the game at lord's today as an administrator...india was and is in a good position all the times ..this game of cricket is majestic."

Ganguly enjoys fond memories of Lord's after making his debut in 1996 with scoring a century against England. Apart from this, who can forget the famous shirt-waving incident on the Lord's balcony when Ganguly stole the limelight as took off his shirt to celebrate India's win in the final of the Natwest Trophy in 2002.

At the stumps of Day 1, the Indian side looked solid with 276-3 after KL Rahul's subline century. With some terrific shots, Rahul scored an unbeaten hundred, his sixth century in 38 Tests. He became India's third centurion as an opener at Lord's and also equalled former cricketer Virender Sehwag in the list of most hundreds outside Asia.

Now, Sehwag and Rahul have four Test tons outside Asia while playing as openers in whites. Sunil Gavaskar sits on top of the list with 15 centuries outside Asia.

Rohit Sharma, who made superb 83 runs for a 126-run stand with Rahul, heaped praises on his fellow opener. He said, "This is probably the best that I have seen KL Rahul bat."

On his Instagram account, Ganguly wrote, "Came here as player first in 1996 ..and then as captain..enjoyed the game at lord's today as an administrator...india was and is in a good position all the times ..this game of cricket is majestic." Ganguly enjoys fond memories of Lord's after making his debut in 1996 with scoring a century against England. Apart from this, who can forget the famous shirt-waving incident on the Lord's balcony when Ganguly stole the limelight as took off his shirt to celebrate India's win in the final of the Natwest Trophy in 2002.
However, a report by Cricbuzz suggested that BCCI chief Sourav Ganguly was not impressed with this decision and has formally expressed disappointment and displeasure over Raman's removal. According to the report, Ganguly was surprised with the decision despite taking the team into the finals of the ICC tournament.

Mithali Raj and Co., under WV Raman, have played five ODI series and five T20I series between December 2018 and March 2020. The Women in Blue won four series in ODIs out of five. Their only loss came against South Africa at home in 2021. But, Team India struggled in the T20Is yet they bounced back and managed to get into the T20 WC final at the jam-packed MCG.

The three-member Cricket Advisory Committee comprising Sulakshana Naik, Madan Lal and Rudra Pratap Singh interviewed the 35 applicants and unanimously agreed on Powar’s candidature.

Cricket- BCCI chief Sourav Ganguly not impressed with WV Raman's sacking: Reports

Former Australian skipper Greg Chappell's stint as Team India's head coach was a very controversial one.
“The two years in India were challenging on every front. The expectations were ridiculous. Some of the issues were around Sourav being captain. He didn’t particularly like working hard. He wasn’t really looking to improve his cricket. He just wanted to be in the team as captain, so that he could control things. It was challenging and wonderful, working with Tendulkar, Sehwag, Dravid and Kumble, some of the young players. Dhoni came into the side” Chappell said on Cricket Life Stories Podcast.

“Ganguly was the one who approached me about coaching India. I had other approaches but I decided that since John Buchanan was coaching Australia… And If I couldn’t coach Australia then I would love to coach the most populous, fanatical cricket country in the world, and that opportunity came about because Sourav, who was the captain, made sure that I did.”

In an interview with Bengali daily Sangbad Pratidin last month, BCCI chief Sourav Ganguly said that getting dropped was the 'biggest setback'.

“That was the biggest setback of my career,” Ganguly said.

“It was absolute injustice. I know you can’t get justice all the time but even then that treatment could have been avoided. I was the captain of the team which had just won in Zimbabwe and I get sacked after returning home?”

“I dreamt of winning the 2007 World Cup for India. We had lost in the final the previous time. I had reasons to dream too. The team had played so well under me for the last five years whether it was home or away. Then you suddenly drop me? First, you say I’m not in the ODI side, then you drop me from the Test team too,” Ganguly added.
