Australia’s World Cup-winning coach John Buchanan has recalled former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly as the leader who took the heated rivalry between India and Australia to a different level. Buchanan explained that the rivalry between India and Australia was only ‘developing’ when Ganguly was named the captain of the Indian team but turned his players into passionate bunch who could see that feared Aussie side eye-to-eye.

Buchanan also worked with Ganguly in the Indian Premier League for Kolkata Knight Riders. The former Australian coach said that he finds shades of Ganguly in current skipper Virat Kohli.

“Once Sourav took over, he instilled a different way of not only playing but also a different way of just conducting themselves against strong oppositions like Australia. It was a developing rivalry for sure, but Sourav was able to take it to another level. Like Ganguly, Kohli has done the same thing for the Indian team,” Buchanan told Sportstar.

From Virat Kohli to Saina Nehwal: Sports fraternity in India wishes a very 'Happy Diwali'

Rohit Sharma played the last three matches of Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020 as he led the Mumbai outfit to their fifth IPL trophy. As Rohit took the field for MI’s matches in IPL 2020 in the latter half of the tournament, confusion grew over his fitness as the Indian selectors hadn’t name Rohit in the limited-overs squad for the series against Australia.

BCCI president Sourav Ganguly has now said that Rohit Sharma is still only 70 per cent fit while clarifying this is the reason why he is not picked for the ODI and T20I series against Australia. After much deliberation, Rohit was recently added to the Indian Test squad.

"Rohit is still 70 per cent [fit]," Ganguly said in an interview with The Week when asked about Rohit. "Why don't you find out from Rohit himself? That is why he is still not picked for the ODIs and T20s down under. He has been added to the Test squad."
Rohit had suffered a hamstring tear in his left leg on October 18 and went on to miss Mumbai Indians’ next four matches. However, he came back in the last three and helped the Mumbai outfit lift their fifth IPL trophy.

It is likely that Rohit would undergo rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru before joining the Indian squad in Australia for the four-match Test series, starting December 17. He still has to pass a fitness test and hasn’t travelled with the Indian squad to Australia.

Another player, who is injured is Wriddhiman Saha. The gloveman picked up hamstring injuries on both his legs. Ganguly has said that the BCCI, Indian physios and the players know about the injury status and that is enough for the board while adding that Wriddhiman will be fit for the Test series against Australia.

"I think people don't know how the BCCI works. The BCCI trainers, physio and Wriddhi himself know that he has two hamstring issues. People don't understand injuries, that is why they talk rubbish"

"Wriddhi is travelling to Australia because he will be fit for Tests. He is not part of the shorter formats. For the entire duration of the IPL, Indian physios and trainers were in Dubai. [India physio] Dr. Nitin Patel is managing injuries and monitoring it all."

Sourav Ganguly, Manu Sawhney and Jay Shah get countdown to ICC T20 World Cup 2021 underway

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) president Sourav Ganguly has said that the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 is all set to be played in the months of April and May with India hosting the lucrative T20 tournament. The ongoing edition of IPL (2020) was shifted to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) due to the COVID-19 pandemic and is being held behind closed doors but the BCCI president has now confirmed that the 14th edition of IPL will be back in India.

There were plenty of speculations surrounding IPL 2021 and many suggested that it could be held once again in the UAE due to the rising cases of COVID-19 in India. However, Ganguly has quashed the reports saying that India will host IPL 2021. The BCCI president further said that India will also host England in 2021 while additionally hosting the Ranji Trophy – India’s premium domestic tournament – in the country.

“Yeah, absolutely. April, May we’ll have another one [IPL 2021 season],” Ganguly told India Today.

When will IPL 2020 schedule release? BCCI president Sourav Ganguly clears up the air

Sourav Ganguly and Jay Shah, the two main office bearers of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) got a lifeline of two weeks after a Super Court of India bench headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) SA Bobde and L Nageswara Rao on Wednesday agreed to hear the plea filed by the Indian board after two weeks. The hearing of the case was today but now has been postponed by two weeks.

The BCCI had filed a petition on April 21 in the Supreme Court of India seeking an extension to the tenures of Shah and Ganguly till 2025. As per the BCCI’s new constitution, that was approved by the apex court in August 2018 on the basis of reforms suggested by Justice RM Lodha committee, a cooling off period of three years in compulsory after completing six years as an office-bearer in state association or the BCCI.

Ganguly had less than a week for his stint as the BCCI president to be completed while Shah’s term has already ended. Notably, Ganguly was the president of Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) whereas Shah was a joint secretary in the Gujrat Cricket Association (GCA).

Sourav Ganguly, Jay Shah attend ACC Board meeting as decision on Asia Cup 2020 deferred

Just a day before the all-important International Cricket Council (ICC) meeting, reports have surfaced that the T20 World Cup, scheduled to be hosted by Australia in October-November, is all set to be postponed till 2022, opening a window for Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020 later in the year.

The move to push back the much-talked-about T20 World Cup to 2022 is because there is another T20 World Cup scheduled for 2021 to be hosted by India and there is a consensus that playing two T20 World Cups in a year seems improper.

As per reports, host broadcasters Star Sports were worried about hosting an IPL in six months followed by two T20 World Cups in the year 2021.

Notably, there is no major ICC event scheduled for the year 2022 so moving the T20 World Cup by two years is a feasible option for everyone given the situation surrounding COVID-19 and broadcasting market.

Hence, India will host the T20 World Cup in 2021, followed by a T20 World Cup in Australia in 2022 and then the 50-over World Cup in 2023, scheduled to be hosted by India.

The postponement of the T20 World Cup will open a window for IPL but everyone is not looking to jump the gun and are waiting to see how the situation surrounding COVID-19, in India, pans out in coming weeks. Just a day before the all-important International Cricket Council (ICC) meeting, reports have surfaced that the T20 World Cup, scheduled to be hosted by Australia in October-November, is all set to be postponed till 2022, opening a window for Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020 later in the year.

The postponement of the T20 World Cup will open a window for IPL but everyone is not looking to jump the gun and are waiting to see how the situation surrounding COVID-19, in India, pans out in coming weeks. If everything goes as per a plan, then a formal announcement regarding IPL is expected in July with back-end preparations starting from June. T20 World Cup set to be postponed to 2022, IPL likely in October-November: Reports

The president of Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), Sourav Ganguly has raised concerns surrounding the financial condition of the board if the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020 cannot be conducted this year. The former Indian skipper said that the BCCI will suffer loss to the tune of Rs 4,000 crore if the cash-rich tournament gets cancelled due to COVID-19 pandemic, however, Ganguly added that the board will not go in for wage cuts of players and staff.

IPL 2020 was originally scheduled for a March 29 commencement but has been postponed twice following the travel restrictions and lockdown measures in place to curb the spread of the dreaded virus.

“We will have to examine our financial situation, see how much money we have and take a call. Not hosting the Indian Premier League (IPL) will cause losses to the tune of Rs. 4,000 crore which is huge,” Ganguly told a leading daily.

“If the IPL takes place, we won’t have to go in for pay cuts. We’ll manage things,” added Ganguly.

There are talks of IPL being hosted behind closed doors if an alternate window is managed to conduct the T20 tournament. On this, Ganguly said the attraction will be less if it happens while recalling India’s match against Pakistan in 1999 where spectators weren’t allowed in for the final day of the Test due to earlier disturbance.

However, the former Indian captain hinted that there could be a restricted amount of crowd allowed for matches but depends on what situation BCCI and stakeholders find themselves in the coming months.

“Yes, the attraction will be less. I remember playing in such a scenario [when spectators were not allowed in for the final day after crowd disturbances at Eden Gardens] at the Asian Test Championship game against Pakistan in 1999 and there was a clear lack of excitement.

“If you have matches with a restricted amount of crowds, not only would strict social distancing rules apply, the officials would also have to be very careful about how the spectators leave the galleries for home. The policing will have to be very strict. It’s a tough call and the situation we find ourselves in, is grave,” Ganguly added.

“The ICC management will continue our contingency planning around ICC events and will also work with Members to explore all options available to us based on a range of scenarios connected to the pandemic.” When a Board member was asked what happens if England, which is due to host Pakistan and West Indies at home is unable to do so, he said the matter of points allocation will be referred to the technical committee.

With government cancelling all regular visas to India except diplomatic and official visas from March 13, the future of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020 looks bleak. Foreign players, who were all set to take part in IPL 2020 will not be available till April 15 due to the cancellation of visas by the government. This comes as a massive news for the future of IPL 2020 with officials and state authorities already sweating about the future of the cash-rich tournament for the 13th edition. Now, all eyes will be on the IPL governing council meeting which is scheduled to be held on March 14. A plethora of sporting events have been either cancelled or postponed including the India versus South Africa ODI series and much-awaited Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020. While the three-match ODI series has been cancelled and the Proteas players will leave India in the earliest flight available, IPL 2020 has been suspended till April 15.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) president Sourav Ganguly reacted for the first time since the postponement of IPL 2020 as the former Indian skipper said everyone's safety is the utmost priority for the cricket board while adding sticking to the postponement is the best possible option.

"Everyone's safety is our priority"

"Let us stick to postponement as for now. Everyone's safety is our priority," BCCI president Ganguly said on the postponement of IPL 2020 on Friday.

With the World Health Organisation (WHO) declaring the novel coronavirus a pandemic, the entire sporting calendar has been left shattered. Tournaments like UEFA Champions League, Europa League, Premier League, England tour of Sri Lanka, Australian Grand Prix, ATP men's tour, Indian Super League 2019-20 final, Kolkata derby, among a few being either suspended or postponed, the onus was on BCCI to decide on the future of IPL 2020 and the apex cricket board decided to suspend it till April 15.

The BCCI's decision came after the Sports Ministry's advisory to all National Sports Federations to follow the Health Ministry's advisory and avoid large gatherings in sports events.

Earlier, the Indian government had announced the cancellation of all regular visas to India except diplomatic and official visas from March 13, which had put the participation of foreign players under dark clouds. However, with the IPL Governing Council meeting set to be held on March 14 (Saturday), it will be interesting to see what conclusion they come, along with all IPL franchises, regarding the scheduling and timings of the matches
