Play without fear: Ganguly hails India's fearless batting

Indian cricket board chief Sourav Ganguly believes pink-ball tests are here to stay and wants the team under Virat Kohli to play at least one such match in every series.

India became the last major cricket nation to embrace day-night tests when they hosted neighbors Bangladesh in front of a sellout crowd at Kolkata's Eden Gardens last month.

As the president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), Ganguly's nudge prompted India to take the plunge into day-night tests, which pundits believe can address test cricket's dwindling attendance in most venues.

"I am pretty upbeat about it," Ganguly told 'The Week' magazine.

"I feel this is the way forward. Not every test, but at least one test in a series."

The world's richest cricket board aggressively marketed India's maiden pink-ball test, illuminating prominent city landmarks in pink and overall creating a buzz around the match.

Encouraged by the turnout in Kolkata, other Indian venues are now ready to host day-night tests, Ganguly said.

"I will share my experiences with the board and we will try and implement it in other places."

"After this, everyone is ready. Nobody wants to play test cricket in front of 5,000 people," added the former India captain.

Kohli has welcomed the innovation but said pink-ball tests should be an exception and not the rule.

"I think (day-night tests) can be a one-off thing, it should not be a regular scenario," Kohli said in Kolkata on the eve of the test match.

The Bangladesh prime minister was introduced to both teams at the Eden Gardens in the presence of the West Bengal chief minister and cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar.

Bangladesh elected to bat first due to the dryness of the pitch. India has named an unchanged team which won the first Test in Indore by an innings and 130 runs.

"The entertainment of Test cricket lies in the fact that the batsman is trying to survive a session and the bowler trying to get a batsman out," Kohil told reporters, adding, "it's great to create more buzz around Test cricket."

Day/night Tests first started in Australia in 2015 with eleven matches being played so far around each producing a result. England, Pakistan, South Africa, Sri Lanka and the West Indies have all played at least one day-night Test.

However, the BCCI stayed away from the new version but the new president Sourav Ganguly insisted on the format citing fan interest and declining interest in Test cricket.

The match will be played from 1:00 pm to 8:00 pm(local time) (0700 to 1430 GMT).

It will be a maiden day-night Test for both sides which is expected to be attended by several dignitaries including Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee who are to ring the customary Eden Bell.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) chief Sourav Ganguly confirmed that tickets for the first four days were sold out.

Indian captain Virat Kohli drew comparisons between the match on Friday to the 2016 T20 World Cup match against Pakistan, saying that it would be nice to play a Test in front of 80,000 spectators, giving “a big boost to all players.”

However, the Indian captain cautioned that day/night Tests should not become the only way for the long format of the game.

"In my opinion, the day/night Test should not become the only way in which the longest format of the game is played because then you are losing out on the nervousness which is created in the first session of the match. You can bring excitement to Test cricket, but you cannot make the longest format of the game adhere just to the excitement," Kohli told reporters.

India is the second Asian country ever to host the match with Pakistan having hosted the first day/night Test back in 2016 against West Indies, which the hosts won by 56 runs.

India had last year turned down the offer to play a day/night Test against Australia in Adelaide.

On India’s decision not to play the match, captain Virat Kohli on Thursday said that the team wanted to play with the pink ball in home conditions first.

“We have not played any first-class games with the pink ball, we wanted to experience it first in our own conditions. It cannot be a sudden thing, you need to prepare. It needed a bit of preparation, once you get the hang of it, then you can play the pink-ball Test," Kohli said.

A total of 11 day-night Tests have been played till date with Australia leading the score charts winning all 5 Tests. Australia had won the first-ever day/night against New Zealand at Adelaide by 3 wickets in 2015.

"Kolkata gearing up for the #PinkBallTest," said the post in which the Eden Gardens could be seen lit in pink. Pink balls are used for day/night encounters as opposed to the traditional red balls for better visibility under lights. (With inputs from ANI)

Sourav Ganguly takes charge as President of Board for Control of Cricket in India

Former India captain Sourav Ganguly has praised the current skipper Virat Kohli calling him a 'champion player'.

"India is a good team. They are playing well. Yes, I know they have not won a big tournament but they played well in the big tournaments except the semis and the finals. So, hopefully, Virat can change it around. He is a champion player," Ganguly told reporters.

India was knocked out of the World Cup 2019 in the semi-finals after facing a defeat at the hands of New Zealand.

Ganguly, who is likely to become the president of the Board of Control of Cricket in India (BCCI), said that he would focus on first-class cricket as it is the base of the Indian cricket.

"My biggest priority is first-class cricketers. We will change their lives because that is the most important thing. They are the base of Indian cricket. We only look at the top but we will have to look at the bottom and we will change it," he said.

Ganguly also said that they have a very young team and will work to the best of their ability.

"First, I think what makes me happier is that I get an opportunity when it is a tough situation, which gives me a tremendous amount of confidence and makes me feel like they have faith in me and my ability. So, that's what it is and I will work to the best of what I know," said Ganguly.

"I have got a very young team with Jay (Shah), Arun (Dhumal) and Jayesh (George). Jay and I are the most experienced. We will do it to the best of our ability. How we will do -- I do not know but there will not be any lack of efforts," added Ganguly.

On Sunday, India had announced the squads for the upcoming T20Is, ODIs and Test match series against West Indies.

Many people expressed their displeasure over the omission of Gill from the squad as the player has been in good form in the recently concluded five-match unofficial ODI series between India A and West Indies A.

The player went on to amass 218 runs in the series against West Indies A.

As India was knocked out of the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup in the semi-finals, former BCCI Secretary, Sanjay Jagdale had opined that Rahane should be the number four batsman in the ODI format.

"In my opinion, the Indian team needs a batsman like Ajinkya Rahane at number four. We have tried many options at the batting position for the past three months. We tried those batsmen who did not have a good record overseas. Rahane has always scored good runs in England," Jagdale had told ANI.

With the term of national Men's Cricket Team head coach, Ravi Shastri, coming to a close after the conclusion of the West Indies series, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has already started to look for a candidate.

For finding a new coach, the BCCI has asked for applications.

ANI has learnt through top sources of the board that Saba Karim, the General Manager of Cricket Operations, has been asked by the Supreme Court-appointed Committee of Administrators (COA) to give new names for the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC).

The new CAC will be monitored by the COA and will appoint the new head coach of the Indian team.

"This CAC will have three members and they will also see that there is no conflict of interest. Whether this CAC team can be appointed or not is also a major concern as the CAC can only be formed in Annual General Meeting (AGM), but we will see what will happen," a senior BCCI official told ANI.

"There will be a meeting of COA on July 26, till then Saba Karim has been asked to give the names for the new CAC and then the COA chief Vinod Rai and members Diana Edulji and Ravi Thogde will then take a call," the official added.

Tendulkar and Laxman have resigned from the CAC while there is no information from Sourav Ganguly, so a new committee will be formed for the appointment of head coach.

On being asked whether there will be any suggestions from the captain on the appointment of head coach, the source said it's up to the committee if they want to take suggestions or not.

Former India captain Sourav Ganguly on Monday once again rued that young wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant would be sorely missed during the ODI World Cup, commencing on May 30 in the UK.

"India will miss Pant in the World Cup. I don't know in whose place but he will be missed," Ganguly told reporters at Eden Gardens.

The explosive 21-year-old Pant was a notable omission from the India's World Cup-bound squad as the national selectors picked an experienced Dinesh Karthik as the second choice wicketkeeper.

Pant had a stupendous season amassing 488 runs from 16 matches at an average of 37.53 and with a strike rate of 162.66 in the Indian Premier League 2019.

With Kedar Jadhav sustaining a shoulder injury during an IPL match between Chennai and Punjab, the medical staff is opting a wait and watch policy on his availability for India's World Cup opener against South Africa on June 5.

Asked whether Pant's name can crop up in case Jadhav fails to get fit, Ganguly said: "He is injured. It's difficult to say whether he will get fit or not. I hope Kedar gets fit."

Ganguly is the advisor of IPL franchise Delhi Capitals, a team for which Pant recently scored massive runs although it failed to make the final.

"We played exceptionally well but two other teams made the final. The season just got over, we have not thought about it (the way forward)," Ganguly said about their loss to Chennai Super Kings in the Qualifier 2.

Ganguly rated Chennai's MS Dhoni and Mumbai's Rohit Sharma as two best captains of the IPL.

"Two best captains of the IPL and one of them won. Everyone will learn under pressure. Both CSK and Mumbai were fantastic teams," said Ganguly.

Delhi's fortune changed in the 12th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) with the team managing to reach the knockout stage for the first time since 2012.

On April 28, the Shreyas Iyer-led team registered a comprehensive 16-run victory over Virat Kohli's Bangalore at the Feroz Shah Kotla, to seal their place in the playoffs.

With nine victories from 14 games, Delhi sit at the second place on the points table and are the top contenders to lift the IPL trophy for the first time

However, the team's advisor and mentor Sourav Ganguly feels that the journey for Delhi is still very long and the team has to work really hard to reach the finals.

When asked how confident he is of Delhi winning the tournament, Ganguly in an exclusive to wionews.com said, "it's too early to say".

Exclusive: Sourav Ganguly on Delhi's chances of lifting IPL 2019 trophy

The current Indian team's strength makes them "favourites" going into any competition leave alone World Cup where they are sureshot semi-finalists alongside Australia, England and Pakistan.

The former India captain Sourav Ganguly, who led the team to the 2003 World Cup finals expects that current round-robin format will be one of the most "keenly contested" tournament.

"My pick for the four semifinalists spot would be India, Australia, England and Pakistan. India are one of the title-contenders of course," Ganguly told PTI in an interview.

Ten teams will be competing in the ODI cricket's quadrennial extravaganza in a round robin format where every team plays each other before the semifinals.

"It's going to be one of the most keenly contested World Cups. Indian team is so strong that in any tournament they will be favourites.

This World Cup will probably be the best format. The best four teams will reach the semi-finals playing all the teams. There are no easy teams," said Ganguly.

Kuldeep Yadav's four wickets in nine games is not something that will affect his performance in the World Cup.

"He will get wickets in the World Cup, don't worry. He's a superb bowler," Ganguly said without reading much into Kuldeep's below-par show for KKR.

The Prince of Kolkata is now playing a pivotal role in the turnaround of Delhi team in search of an elusive IPL title.

"I don't see the challenges as tough, I just find a way to try and make it work. Sometimes it works, sometimes it does not. It's a great honour to help these players and turn around a team which has not done well in the past," the Delhi advisor said.

Delhi are occupying second place behind Chennai in the leaderboard as they need one win from three matches to seal their playoff berth.

"Delhi is a mixture of youth and experience. I can only advice so the credit should go to players who actually execute it."

The team has two legends at the helm with Ganguly working alongside his former Aussie counterpart Ricky Ponting who is the head coach of the franchise.

"We are great friends for a long period of time. I was the runners-up in the (2003) World Cup which he had won. He has great experience. It's been a pleasure working with him. The way he adjusts to player's needs is a remarkable experience. He's a fantastic coach," Ganguly said showering praise on Ponting.

Asked about the glitz and glamour of the IPL, Ganguly said: "IPL is pure sport. The glitz and glamour is just 15 per cent. 85% is actually professional, hard cricket. Players are under enormous pressure to perform."

Sourav Ganguly picks his favourites for semi-finals in ICC World Cup 2019

Rishabh Pant has attracted the attention of two legends at once -- Ricky Ponting calling him a cricketer "on a different planet" and Sourav Ganguly summing up his ultra-aggressive batting with a "wow".

Days after being left out of India's World Cup squad at the expense of Dinesh Karthik, Pant made a statement by guiding Delhi Capitals to a win over Rajasthan with a 36-ball 78 Monday night.

Mesmerised by the young batsman's range of strokes, former India captain and Delhi advisor Ganguly ran into the field and lifted Pant. Then, Ganguly tweeted, "Rishabh pant @RishabPant777@ParthJindal11 u deserve this .. U r wow."

Pant was in rampaging form as he smashed six boundaries and four sixes to help his team chase down a target of 192 with four balls to spare, the win has pushed Delhi to the top of the IPL standings.

Delhi head coach and former Australia captain Ponting was unshakeable in his belief that India erred in not picking him for the World Cup.

"I know how disappointed he was to miss out on the World Cup. In my opinion as well, I think India made the wrong choice there. I think he would have been absolutely devastating in English conditions through those middle over against spinners," Ponting said while speaking to the official broadcasters.

The two-time World Cup winning captain added, "Would have loved to see what he could have done in the World Cup. As I said at the time he was left out, he's got the potential to play three or four more World Cups if he keeps himself fit and healthy."

After the dismissal of senior opener Shikhar Dhawan and skipper Shreyas Iyer, Pant played one of his most responsible innings in the ongoing IPL.

Ponting said, "Someone as explosive as Rishabh likes a bit more pace on the ball. And we saw that tonight. Once he gets those sort of wickets he's lethal. He got a wicket like that in Mumbai and he hit 70-odd off 20-odd balls.

"Rishabh himself, he is on a different planet. He is an ultra-talented guy. He is a real competitor and a winner. He loves these conditions. Some really good signs there going forward in the tournament."

Team mentor Ganguly also lavished rich praise on Pant, saying talented players like him should not be asked to change their game.

"Players like Rishabh Pant are genuine match winners. You don't want to tell them to change much. They might fail in four or five matches but on their day they can single-handedly win you matches, that is why they are important," Ganguly said during a post-match chat.

There is not a bowler in the world that can stop Shikhar Dhawan when the opener is in determined mood and the left-hander will be crucial to India's hopes at this year's Cricket World Cup, former captain Sourav Ganguly has said.

Dhawan smashed 97 not out off 63 balls in Delhi's seven-wicket victory against Kolkata Knight Riders in Friday's Indian Premier League (IPL) contest at Eden Gardens, much to the delight of Ganguly, an advisor to the Capitals.

Captain Virat Kohli and his deputy Rohit Sharma are India's batting mainstays in one-day cricket but Ganguly puts Dhawan, who has 16 centuries from 128 ODIs with a 93-plus strike rate, in the same league.

"The three best players in one-day cricket -- Dhawan, Rohit, Virat," Ganguly told the IPL website. "When he (Dhawan) gets set and gets in he's unstoppable.

"All I expect from him is determination. When he is determined, no bowler in the world can stop him."

Dhawan's second fifty of this IPL season, which catapulted Delhi into the top four, augurs well for India ahead of the May 30 to July 14 World Cup in England and Wales.

Along with opening partner Rohit, the onus will be on Dhawan to give India strong starts in the tournament and the southpaw has performed well on English soil.

Named 'man of the series' in their triumphant 2013 Champions Trophy campaign, Dhawan was also the tournament's leading scorer four years later when India lost in the final to Pakistan.

"If he gets set, he takes the game away. This is how he plays for India," Ganguly, who led India to the final of the 2003 World Cup, later told reporters. "He's a class act."

Two-time champions India begin their World Cup campaign against South Africa in Southampton on June 5.

Sourav Ganguly backs Shikhar Dhawan to shine at World Cup

Indian cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar Sunday reverted to all the trolls and statements trying to instigate differences with former captain Sourav Ganguly over the cricket match between India and Pakistan in the upcoming ICC World Cup.

Taking to his twitter handle, Sachin urged his friend and former teammate Sourav not to justify his statement.

As per several media reports, Ganguly had reacted on Tendulkar's comments on the World Cup match between India and Pakistan, saying he would rather want the title than worrying about losing two points.

Sourav's comments came after Sachin backed the game, despite the recent Pulwama terror attack that killed at least 40 Indian soldiers, and strongly echoed that he would hate to give Pakistan two points and help them advance in the tournament.

“India has always come up trumps against Pakistan in the World Cup. Time to beat them once again. Would personally hate to give them two points and help them in the tournament,” said Tendulkar

But earlier in the day, Sourav also took to his Twitter to justify his statement saying his comments 'were not against Sachin'. Ganguly further stressed that Sachin has been his friend for last 25 years and will be in future also.

Former Indian cricketer on ventilator, Sourav Ganguly extends helping hand

Former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly Thursday said "we should move on" from the controversy surrounding Hardik Pandya and KL Rahul's sexist comments because he is sure the two will learn from it and become better persons.

Speaking at an event here, Ganguly said he hasn't seen the 'Koffee with Karan' episode in which Pandya and Rahul's misogynistic comments on women led to a provisional suspension on them. But he offered a sympathetic view on the under-fire duo.

"People make mistakes, let's not go too far here. I am sure, whoever has done it will realise and come out a better person. We are human beings not machines that we will always be perfect. We should move on and make sure it doesn't happen again," Ganguly said on the raging controversy.

Pandya and Rahul were forced to return midway through the ongoing ODI series against Australia and India captain Virat Kohli condemned their statements on hookups with multiple women as "inappropriate".

They have been show caused twice by the BCCI since then and are also being put through an inquiry.

Ganguly said most cricketers are "great guys".

"...They (cricketers) are humble, every now and then one or two make mistakes but I know most of them personally and they are great guys," Ganguly said during the trailer launch of '22 Yards' at a suburb.

Pandya and Rahul, pending the outcome of the inquiry, will not be a part of the Indian team. After missing the ongoing ODI series, they are set to miss the upcoming New Zealand Tour as well.

Ganguly, who has been credited with shaping Indian cricket during his captaincy stint, said it's not that modern-day cricketers are not obedient.

"Look at Virat Kohli, he is such a fantastic role model. India is a fortunate country, every generation produces players who all of us cherish, there was (Sunil) Gavaskar, then came (Sachin) Tendulkar, when Tendulkar finished people thought who's next, now it's Virat Kohli.

"A lot of these cricketers are fantastic human beings because they come from middle-class backgrounds and fight their way up. Can you imagine 11 selected out of the millions play the game."

Former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly Thursday said "we should move on" from the controversy surrounding Hardik Pandya and KL Rahul's sexist comments because he is sure the two will learn from it and become better persons.

Also Read: Hardik has not left the house, not taking any calls, says his father Pandya and Rahul were forced to return midway through the ongoing ODI series against Australia and India captain Virat Kohli condemned their statements on hookups with multiple women as "inappropriate". They have been show caused twice by the BCCI since then and are also being put through an inquiry. Ganguly said most cricketers are "great guys". People make mistakes, let's move on: Sourav Ganguly on Pandya-Rahul comments row

Australia-India, the classic rivalry: Here are 5 memorable Test clashes

Former India captain Sourav Ganguly is not surprised at the women's cricket team's decision to drop senior most player Mithali Raj for its World T20 semi-final against England, saying he faced the same fate when he was at the peak of his career.

Mithali, the ODI captain, had two back-to-back fifties against Pakistan and Ireland but was rested for the final league game against Australia due to a knee issue and also didn't feature in India's eight-wicket semi-final loss to England.

"No! I also have also sat in the dugout after captaining India. When I saw Mithali Raj being dropped, I said 'Welcome to the group'," Ganguly said at the Tollygunge Club.

"Captains are asked to sit, so just do it. I have done it in Faisalabad. I didn't play an ODI game for 15 months when I was probably the best performer in one-day cricket. It happens in life. The best in the world are at times shown the door," the 46-year-old said recalling the 2006 second Test against Pakistan.

Ganguly, however, said it's not the end of the road for Mithali.

"You should always remember you're best because you did something and there's an opportunity again. So I am not too disappointed seeing Mithali Raj being asked to sit out. I have not been disappointed to see the reactions on the ground," he said.

"But I am disappointed because India lost the semifinals because I thought they had the team to go the distance. It happens as they say there's no guarantee in life."

Commenting on World Cup-winning former Indian skipper MS Dhoni, who's form is on the wane of late, Ganguly said he still has the power in him to hit big sixes and should be allowed to go on a high.

"He's another champion. Fantastic career for 12-13 years since winning the World Twenty 20. Just like everyone else he has to perform. There's one must in life: whatever job you do, wherever you are, whatever age you have, how much experience you have you have to keep preforming at the top level otherwise someone else will take your place," he said.

"I wish him all the luck because we want champions to go on a high. I still feel he can hit the ball in the stands. He's a phenomenal cricketer," Ganguly said.

Asked about his take on the 2019 World Cup lineup, Ganguly said: "I am not a selector but I expect 85-90 per cent of this team to play in the World Cup."

Talking on India skipper Virat Kohli, Ganguly said: "He's phenomenal. Look at his numbers. He wears his hat on his sleeves and India needs a captain like him for whom winning means everything. I wish him all the luck."

A 145-page report by the Ethics Centre review into Australian Cricket has refuted the "mistaken" view that CA had overseen a 'win at all costs' policy.

With their series against Australia already underway Ganguly said winning at all costs should be the way but players should not cross the line.

"Nobody wants to go there and lose. In your journey to the tag of winning-at-all-costs, you can still behave, you can still do the right things by not crossing the line. Lot of champions have done it. Look at Rahul Dravid, Steve Waugh," Ganguly said, adding that the Aussies have to "be careful" of not repeating another ball-tampering scandal.

Like Mithali, I too was dropped at my peak: Sourav Ganguly

A shoulder injury has forced Wriddhiman Saha out of action as of now but he has been India's best wicketkeeper in the last five to ten years, reckons former captain Sourav Ganguly.

The 34-year-old Saha, who has been India's number one wicketkeeper in Test cricket since MS Dhoni's retirement in December 2014, is undergoing rehab for his shoulder surgery.

"He's out of the team for about a year now but I think in the last five to 10 years' he has been India's best glovesman. Hope he recovers soon," Ganguly said.

The former captain spoke during the launch of 'Wiki', a sports fiction written by senior journalist Gautam Bhattacharya. The book chronicles the journey of a struggling wicketkeeper and how he makes it big.

Young Rishabh Pant has made an impressive start to his Test career and he will take flight for the upcoming Australia tour. Parthiv Patel is also in the squad as a backup to Pant.

Saha, who has played 32 Tests and scored 1164 runs including three hundreds, last played in the Cape Town Test earlier this year.

"Injury is not in your hands. Wicketkeeper has to dive and he got injured while diving. It takes a certain time to recover. The faster he recovers, the better it is," said Ganguly.

With India not playing any Tests after the Australia tour till July 2019, the Bengal wicketkeeper's future remains uncertain.
