Ganguly writes to BCCI, expresses concern over CoA running Indian cricket

<p>Former India captain Sourav Ganguly on Sunday backed struggling Mahendra Singh Dhoni to do well in the World Cup and said the ongoing series against West Indies would be crucial for the veteran stumper looking forward to next year's showpiece event.&nbsp;</p>

<p>A colossus in ODI cricket, of late Dhoni is struggling with his batting and his scores have dwindled in the last few years.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Starting with the five-match ODI series against West Indies here, India have 18-odd matches left for the World Cup and the think-tank has brought in dashing Delhi wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant in the mix to spice up the scenario.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"I don't know what combination they are thinking at. But I'm sure he (Dhoni) will do well in the World Cup. It's (against West Indies) big series for him," Ganguly told PTI at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium while watching the ODI with Assam governor Jagdish Mukhi.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In the Asia Cup, Dhoni batted four times, scoring 77 runs with an average of 19.25 and a strike rate of 62.09.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Overall in 2018, he has batted 10 times in 15 matches, for an average of 28.12 and a strike rate of 67.36.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Dhoni has an unimpressive record in the seaming conditions of England where he is yet to score a century from 20 ODIs, and averages 38.06, a sharp drop from his career average of 50.61.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"His overall record is very good," Ganguly pointed out.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"It all depends how the players perform going ahead to the World Cup. It's about scoring runs. That's why Pant has been given a chance," he added.&nbsp;</p>

<p>All 10 teams will play each other in a round-robin format, with the top four qualifying for the semi-finals in the next year's World Cup beginning with England versus South Africa at the Oval on May 30.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"India are a good ODI side. This World Cup will be worth watching. All teams play all and the best four go. It will be a competitive one," Ganguly said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Hosting its first ODI, the Assam Cricket Association invited Ganguly as the guest of honour and was felicitated with traditional Assamese gamcha (towel) and xorai, an offering pot with a stand at the bottom, a decorative symbol of Assam used for offering tamul pan (betel nut and leaves).&nbsp;</p>

<p>Ganguly also launched ACA's souvenir.</p>

Sourav Ganguly, Gautam Gambhir bat for Steve Smith

<p>The prince of Kolkata Sourav Ganguly is in the news again. His autobiography “A Century Is Not Enough” is out.</p>

<p>As far as the title of the book goes, it seems that he was inspired by ex-diplomat Kunwar Natwar Singh, who released his autobiography a few years back with the title “One Life Is Not Enough”. But barring title it is a different stuff altogether.</p>

<p>Though, I still have to read the book but have read many reviews of it and got to know about it to the considerable extent. As I read in one of the reviews of the book, you may love Sourav or despise him but you have to accept that he has been one of the most impactful players in the Indian Cricket in the recent decades.</p>

<p>Sourav Ganguly is the man with strong conviction – “I am like this only, leave me or take me” sort of. When Ganguly is telling the world about his life and career through his book, for someone like me who had followed his career from end-to-end, it becomes quite important to recall salient moments of his career.</p>

<p>When Ganguly was selected for the tri-series in Australia in 1991-92, all we thought that he was a budding cricketer, son of an influential Cricket administrator who was pushed to international arena quite prematurely.</p>

<p>Since he was with the side for the months (remember each side played eight group matches in that series), he was given a chance in an ODI (his debut match for India) against West Indies. It was a forgettable show Ganguly was dropped and forgotten.</p>

<p>We hardly noticed him for the next 4 ½ years, until his name was announced (rather unexpectedly) for the tour of England in the summer of 1996. He and Rahul Dravid grabbed the places vacated by Vinod Kambli and Sanjay Manjrekar in the middle order with both the hands.</p>

<p>Sourav Ganguly scored back to back centuries and attained cult status instantaneously. Over the next few years, he pipped Rahul Dravid for the claim of captaincy as Ganguly was an undisputed member of ODI team as well, which Dravid wasn’t during 1997-98.</p>

<p>One thing Ganguly established right in the beginning of his career that he was extremely fluent batsman the god of offside as he was described once. He along with Tendulkar was one of the most successful ODI opening pairs in the history. He played many great knocks in ODIs but the one at Taunton (he scored 183) against Sri Lanka in a World Cup match deserves a special mention.</p>

<p>Ganguly had a dream run as Indian skipper during 2000-05. True that he had batsmen like Tendulkar, Dravid and Laxman at his disposal but still plenty of credit for the resurrection of the team goes to the fearless and aggressive leadership of Ganguly. During his period at the helm, Ganguly was handling both veterans and newcomers quite well.</p>

<p>Remember Tendulkar was almost seven years his senior in Test seniority. Ganguly was audacious. He has admitted that one of the toughest tasks for him was to tell Anil Kumble during an overseas tour once that Kumble was not making the cut into the playing eleven. Ganguly must be in an awkward situation considering Kumble made his Test debut six years before Ganguly.</p>

<p>Ganguly has praised MS Dhoni unequivocally in his book and very subtly took the credit of given Dhoni to the nation. As such the claim Ganguly has made is correct. It was Ganguly who put the final stamp on Dhoni’s inclusion in team India in 2004 and he promoted him up in the batting order in that famous Vizag ODI against Pakistan.</p>

<p>Dhoni slammed a century and rest is history. During his last Test match in 2008 against Australia, as a mark for respect, Dhoni asked Ganguly to lead the side when India was fielding. Ganguly has well acknowledged that goodwill gesture in his book.</p>

<p>Apart from Dhoni, Ganguly handled newcomers very well. He played a major role in shaping career of Sehwag, Harbhajan and Zaheer Khan in their initial days.</p>

<p>In his book, Ganguly had given sufficient coverage to his feud with Greg Chappel. It was a forgettable episode of Ganguly’s career. Ganguly has mentioned that he had some other impression of Chappel (a positive impression) when he met him in Australia but things were entirely different when Chappel joined team India as the coach.</p>

<p>Sourav is free to have his take on the episode but he could have probably handled the whole issue is the more mature way. The spat went dirty beyond limits, which affected Ganguly’s career as well.</p>

<p>But this is the way Ganguly has been, outspoken and with great conviction about his actions. In later years, he teamed up with Shahrukh Khan for KKR when IPL started in 2008. But partnerships fell flat soon. Ganguly has covered this well in his book.</p>

<p>Sourav Ganguly had a roller coaster career during 1996-2008 for India and for IPL thereafter for few years. His autobiography must be a good read for Cricket freak and hope it is as slick as his batting used to be.</p>

<p>(Disclaimer: The opinions expressed above are the personal views of the author and do not reflect the views of ZMCL)</p>

He has admitted that one of the toughest tasks for him was to tell Anil Kumble during an overseas tour once that Kumble was not making the cut into the playing eleven. Ganguly must be in an awkward situation considering Kumble made his Test debut six years before Ganguly. Ganguly has praised MS Dhoni unequivocally in his book and very subtly took the credit of given Dhoni to the nation. As such the claim Ganguly has made is correct. It was Ganguly who put the final stamp on Dhoni’s inclusion in team India in 2004 and he promoted him up in the batting order in that famous Vizag ODI against Pakistan. Dhoni slammed a century and rest is history. During his last Test match in 2008 against Australia, as a mark for respect, Dhoni asked Ganguly to lead the side when India was fielding. Ganguly has well acknowledged that goodwill gesture in his book. Apart from Dhoni, Ganguly handled newcomers very well. He played a major role in shaping career of Sehwag, Harbhajan and Zaheer Khan in their initial days. In his book, Ganguly had given sufficient coverage to his feud with Greg Chappel. It was a forgettable episode of Ganguly’s career. Ganguly has mentioned that he had some other impression of Chappel (a positive impression) when he met him in Australia but things were entirely different when Chappel joined team India as the coach. Sourav is free to have his take on the episode but he could have probably handled the whole issue is the more mature way. The spat went dirty beyond limits, which affected Ganguly’s career as well. But this is the way Ganguly has been, outspoken and with great conviction about his actions. In later years, he teamed up with Shahrukh Khan for KKR when IPL started in 2008. But partnerships fell flat soon. Ganguly has covered this well in his book. Sourav Ganguly had a roller coaster career during 1996-2008 for India and for IPL thereafter for few years. His autobiography must be a good read for Cricket freak and hope it is as slick as his batting used to be. Opinion: Sourav Ganguly gets candid with his autobiography, 'A Century Is Not Enough'

<p>Narendra Modi is a unique politician in a sense that he invokes extreme feelings. There is a legion of people who relentlessly fire a salvo at Modi, and that too in a brazen and unequivocal manner. Leave behind his usual political opponents, Modi even draws severe flakes from BJP&rsquo;s allies like Shiv Sena and his own disgruntled party colleagues, such as Yashwant Sinha and Shatrughan Sinha. But then Modi remains unperturbed and unchanged. &nbsp;</p>

<p>Political commentators evaluate Modi vis-&agrave;-vis BJP&rsquo;s other prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. During the course of his political career and en route his voyage to the summit, Modi has made more foes than friends. Vajpayee on other hand commanded all-round respect, even from his opponents. While Vajpayee maintained almost impeccable conduct in public/political life, Modi on the other hand never shies away from making unrestrained jibes on his political opponents. He has mastered the art of sarcasm and knows how to use it optimally to lure the voters as we witnessed in the recent Gujarat election.&nbsp; &nbsp;</p>

<p>This debate prompts a very interesting point for discussion. While on a crusade, one cannot keep everybody pleased, although it should always be tried to keep as many people happy as possible. But what if you these two paths cross each other? Will you forego your agenda if you realise that it may antagonise few or tamper your public image or give ammunition to your detractors to bait you?</p>

<p>It reminds me of a narrative from&nbsp;Mahabharat, which actually gives unequivocal direction. During the war of Mahabharata, when&nbsp;Karna&nbsp;was unarmed,&nbsp;Krishna&nbsp;incited&nbsp;Arjun&nbsp;to attack&nbsp;Karna&nbsp;and kill him.&nbsp;Arjun&nbsp;hesitantly replied &ldquo;Lord, that would be unfair, immoral and against the protocol as Karna is not having his weapons with him and moreover he is not on his chariot. My reputation of great warrior would be disregarded and forthcoming generations would loathe me for this cowardly act&rdquo;.</p>

<p>Krishna&nbsp;replied&nbsp;&ldquo;I agree that it would surely be a deplorable act. However, the future of&nbsp;humanity&nbsp;is only secured if Pandavas win this war. Pandavas can never win if Karna is not reined in and this is the only chance you&nbsp;have&nbsp;to kill him. So future of whole&nbsp;humanity, or your personal glorification. You think over it and make choice&rdquo;.&nbsp;&nbsp;Arjun&nbsp;did not argue further and killed&nbsp;Karna.</p>

<p>It also reminds me of one famous statement of Douglas&nbsp;Jardine.&nbsp;Jardine&nbsp;was skipper of England Cricket side during infamous&nbsp;Bodyline&nbsp;Test series (Ashes) during 1932-33. He asked his bowlers to bowl intimidating deliveries targeting Australian batsmen.&nbsp;Jardine&nbsp;used this tactic to tame powerful batting line-up of Australia, which included&nbsp;legendary&nbsp;Don Bradman.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Jardine&nbsp;was widely criticised for this. During a gathering, one reporter asked&nbsp;Jardine&nbsp;that this way, he may not win many friends in Australia.&nbsp;Jardine&nbsp;promptly replied, which remains iconic to date, &ldquo;I am not here to win friends. I am here to win the Ashes&rdquo;.</p>

<p>Though in this story the reply only is memorable not what&nbsp;Jardine&nbsp;did; through the Test series, Jardine was actually highly disgraceful, acting deplorably and against the spirit of the game. The key, however, is that when you are on a crusade, the&nbsp;end result&nbsp;matters the most.</p>

<p>The moot question remains whether is it really possible to keep everybody happy, and to have nil criticism. My answer would be an emphatic: NO.&nbsp; Once someone told me&nbsp;&ldquo;remember, if everybody is happy with you then the something is wrong with the way you function&rdquo;.&nbsp;This probably is a hyperbole but strikes a clear point.</p>

<p>Indira Gandhi is the starkest epitome of this. She was steadfast and really blunt in her actions. Indira rarely cared about other&rsquo;s opinion on her actions. Abolition of Privy Purse was one such action. She faced a huge backlash from princes and till date they curse her, which they believe was an act of backstabbing. But she did what she felt was right for the nation.&nbsp;She went on, snubbed the US and world community with a great display of audacity and tactics during Bangladesh liberation war in 1971.</p>

<p>KPS&nbsp;Gill is the man who decimated militancy in Punjab. His motto was clear; take criticism in your stride if you are seriously pursuing a goal and you are confident that you are on the right path. He brutally crushed terrorism amidst a relentless tirade of human right violations against him and remained absolutely unperturbed during the course.</p>

<p>Cricketer Sourav Ganguly maintained his on-field aggression despite all the criticism he faced from the fraternity. Andrew Flintoff flaunted his shirt in India after winning a match and Ganguly gave it back by flaunting his from the Balcony of Lords a year later when India defeated England in the&nbsp;final&nbsp;of triangular series. People nailed him for his ill-manners but Ganguly had the temerity to make Steve Waugh wait at the toss, which was his way to deal with arrogant Aussies. He always pursued an agenda without considering that how people will weigh him.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Today not even his detractor would deny that Ganguly is the man who gave Indian Cricket a much-needed lease of life in the new millennium. On the other hand, a decision influenced by the&nbsp;desire of self-glorification can be catastrophic. Rajiv&nbsp;Gandhi in his bid to become a proponent of peace at the world stage, sent&nbsp;IPKF&nbsp;(Indian Peace Keeping Force) to Sri Lanka, a decision which severely backfired. It ultimately became the reason behind his assassination. VP Singh wanted to rewrite history by opening floodgates of reservation in 1990. His political career came to an end in a flash.</p>

<p>You need to pursue, what you feel is correct without considering the reaction of people and without considering what public image will you carry. &nbsp;</p>

<p>There is always a counter-argument.&nbsp;You can be tipped of as a dictator, over-confident, undemocratic etc. Of course, you need to work with conviction but at the same time, you shouldn&rsquo;t simply shut your eyes or ears to the criticism. It is little tricky as the line of differentiation between two situations is very thin and one has to take his own call where to stand and strike a balance. Modi knows how to pin down his opponents. In the process, the intense criticism which he earns is the side effect of his actions.

Narendra Modi is a unique politician in a sense that he invokes extreme feelings. There is a legion of people who relentlessly fire a salvo at Modi, and that too in a brazen and unequivocal manner. Leave behind his usual political opponents, Modi even draws severe flakes from BJP’s allies like Shiv Sena and his own disgruntled party colleagues, such as Yashwant Sinha and Shatrughan Sinha. But then Modi remains unperturbed and unchanged. Political commentators evaluate Modi vis-à-vis BJP’s other prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. He has mastered the art of sarcasm and knows how to use it optimally to lure the voters as we witnessed in the recent Gujarat election. This debate prompts a very interesting point for discussion. While on a crusade, one cannot keep everybody pleased, although it should always be tried to keep as many people happy as possible. But what if you these two paths cross each other? Will you forego your agenda if you realise that it may antagonise few or tamper your public image or give ammunition to your detractors to bait you? It reminds me of a narrative from Mahabharat, which actually gives unequivocal direction. During the war of Mahabharata, when Karna was unarmed, Krishna incited Arjun to attack Karna and kill him. Arjun hesitantly replied “Lord, that would be unfair, immoral and against the protocol as Karna is not having his weapons with him and moreover he is not on his chariot. My reputation of great warrior would be disregarded and forthcoming generations would loathe me for this cowardly act”. Krishna replied “I agree that it would surely be a deplorable act. However, the future of humanity is only secured if Pandavas win this war. Pandavas can never win if Karna is not reined in and this is the only chance you have to kill him. So future of whole humanity, or your personal glorification. You think over it and make choice”. Arjun did not argue further and killed Karna. It also reminds me of one famous statement of Douglas Jardine. Jardine was skipper of England Cricket side during infamous Bodyline Test series (Ashes) during 1932-33. He asked his bowlers to bowl intimidating deliveries targeting Australian batsmen. Jardine used this tactic to tame powerful batting line-up of Australia, which included legendary Don Bradman. Jardine was widely criticised for this. During a gathering, one reporter asked Jardine that this way, he may not win many friends in Australia. Jardine promptly replied, which remains iconic to date, “I am not here to win friends. I am here to win the Ashes”. Though in this story the reply only is memorable not what Jardine did; through the Test series, Jardine was actually highly disgraceful, acting deplorably and against the spirit of the game. The key, however, is that when you are on a crusade, the end result matters the most. The moot question remains whether is it really possible to keep everybody happy, and to have nil criticism. My answer would be an emphatic: NO. Once someone told me “remember, if everybody is happy with you then the something is wrong with the way you function”. This probably is a hyperbole but strikes a clear point. Indira Gandhi is the starkest epitome of this. She was steadfast and really blunt in her actions. Indira rarely cared about other’s opinion on her actions. Abolition of Privy Purse was one such action. She faced a huge backlash from princes and till date they curse her, which they believe was an act of backstabbing. But she did what she felt was right for the nation. She went on, snubbed the US and world community with a great display of audacity and tactics during Bangladesh liberation war in 1971. KPS Gill is the man who decimated militancy in Punjab. His motto was clear; take criticism in your stride if you are seriously pursuing a goal and you are confident that you are on the right path. He brutally crushed terrorism amidst a relentless tirade of human right violations against him and remained absolutely unperturbed during the course. Cricketer Sourav Ganguly maintained his on-field aggression despite all the criticism he faced from the fraternity. Andrew Flintoff flaunted his shirt in India after winning a match and Ganguly gave it back by flaunting his from the Balcony of Lords a year later when India defeated England in the final of triangular series. People nailed him for his ill-manners but Ganguly had the temerity to make Steve Waugh wait at the toss, which was his way to deal with arrogant Aussies. He always pursued an agenda without considering that how people will weigh him. Today not even his detractor would deny that Ganguly is the man who gave Indian Cricket a much-needed lease of life in the new millennium. On the other hand, a decision influenced by the desire of self-glorification can be catastrophic. Rajiv Gandhi in his bid to become a proponent of peace at the world stage, sent IPKF (Indian Peace Keeping Force) to Sri Lanka, a decision which severely backfired. It ultimately became the reason behind his assassination. VP Singh wanted to rewrite history by opening floodgates of reservation in 1990. His political career came to an end in a flash. You need to pursue, what you feel is correct without considering the reaction of people and without considering what public image will you carry. There is always a counter-argument. You can be tipped of as a dictator, over-confident, undemocratic etc. Of course, you need to work with conviction but at the same time, you shouldn’t simply shut your eyes or ears to the criticism. It is little tricky as the line of differentiation between two situations is very thin and one has to take his own call where to stand and strike a balance. Indira Gandhi went overboard and breached that thin line when she imposed emergency in 1975. Voters immediately taught her a lesson in 1977. Modi takes tough stand and then sticks to it. In the 2014 Maharashtra election, Modi refused to bow down in front of the tantrums on Shiv Sena. The whole alliance was put on stake but Modi gave a clear message that time has come now for BJP to dictate terms. Till date, Modi is calling the shots in the alliance. He would move ahead with steps like demonetization and GST, snubbing all kind of criticism. He knew his party needs to win Gujarat, he went all out to achieve the same. After being given lbw, Smith is accused of conferring -- on whether the decision should be reviewed -- with the Australian dressing room

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has requested the International Cricket Council (ICC) to take cognisance of Australian skipper Steve Smith seeking dressing room help for a DRS call. Former India captains have called on cricket authorities to investigate Australia skipper Steve Smith amid allegations his team flouted the rules of the game when deciding whether to review decisions during the second test. Incensed India captain Virat Kohli accused Smith of 'crossing the line' on day four of the Bangalore match on Tuesday when he was given out lbw and looked toward the players' area in the stands when deciding whether to review the verdict using the Decision Review System. Players are not allowed to seek direction apart from conferring with the non-striker. Smith said it had been a one-off incident caused by a "brain fade" but Kohli countered that it was not the only time it had happened and that he had complained to the match officials. Former India captain and broadcaster Sunil Gavaskar called on the International Cricket Council to investigate. Players are not allowed to seek direction apart from conferring with the non-striker × "I don't think that was in the spirit of the game. We have to see what the ICC and match referee do," Gavaskar told local broadcaster NDTV. "I have not seen other earlier incidents but I saw it clearly when Smith did that today, he was clearly gesturing to the dressing room." Sourav Ganguly, who captained India from 2000-05, also demanded authorities "take action". "The umpires and match referee must ensure this doesn’t happen in future," he told Indian broadcaster Aaj Tak. Peter Handscomb, who was at the non-striker's end during the incident, tweeted after the 75-run defeat that he was to blame. "I referred smudga (Smith) to look at the box... my fault and was unaware of the rule. Shouldn't take anything away from what was an amazing game!" he wrote. Michael Clarke, Smith's predecessor as captain, said he had concerns about the actions of his former team mate. "I want to find out from the Australian team if they're using the DRS in that way, if they are then that is unacceptable," Clarke told TV station India Today. "The fact that Peter Handscomb is even thinking about telling the Australian captain to turn around and look to the support staff, I've got my concerns." The DRS storm capped a tense and sometimes ill-tempered match, with a number of heated verbal exchanges prompting interventions from the umpires to calm players down. Kohli's accusations and any action taken by the ICC are bound to reverberate in coming days, with the four-match series locked at 1-1 before the third test in Ranchi next week. Australian media likened the controversy to the infamous Sydney Cricket Ground test in 2008, which soured relations between the teams for a number of years. The Anil Kumble-captained Indians threatened to abandon the series after bowler Harbhajan Singh was found guilty of racially abusing Australia's Andrew Symonds, a conviction that was later overturned. Former Indian cricketer Sourav Ganguly receives death threat

The raging feud between two former Indian captains today turned uglier after Sourav Ganguly lashed out at Ravi Shastri saying the Mumbaikar was &quot;living in a fool&#39;s world&quot; if he held him responsible for not getting the coveted India coach&#39;s job.<br />
<br />
Being pipped by Anil Kumble for chief coach&#39;s post, Shastri created a controversy when he said that, Ganguly, part of the three-member high-powered Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) was not present during his interview which he found to be &quot;disrespectful&quot;.<br />
<br />
Not one to pull back punches, a furious Ganguly today gave it back to Shastri questioning the former India all-rounder&#39;s &quot;seriousness&quot; while giving an interview while &quot;holidaying in Bangkok&quot;.<br />
<br />
&quot;I just feel his (Shastri) comments are very personal. If Ravi Shastri feels that Sourav Ganguly was responsible for him not being the India coach, he is living in a fool&#39;s world,&quot; an angry Ganguly told TV channels today.<br />
<br />
One of India&#39;s most celebrated captains was even more terse while rebutting Shastri&#39;s suggestion that next time, he should be &quot;present&quot; when an interview is being conducted.<br />
<br />
&quot;It angers me that he gave a suggestion that I should be available for such meetings. I have been a part of BCCI meetings for some time and I have always been available. My advice to Ravi is that when the coach of India is selected and one of the most important jobs, he should be in front of the committee and not sit in Bangkok and give a presentation while being on a holiday,&quot; Ganguly said.<br />
<br />
Taking a a dig at Shastri&#39;s casual approach, Ganguly said that the former Team Director could have been present in person &quot;especially when one of India&#39;s greatest cricketers of all time spoke for two hours. I am hurt because of personal attacks.<br />
<br />
&quot;I read in a couple of newspapers and chose to ignore it. I am extremely saddened that he went on air to express his view. Specially someone who has been in every BCCI committee for the last 20 years. He has been in my position for selecting the coach 10 years back. He is aware of everything. I informed BCCI on June 19th and I have got official mails. I will circulate those mails once I get a clearance from BCCI,&quot; Ganguly said.<br />
<br />
Ganguly then went onto add,&quot;I don&#39;t know whether he is serious or not serious, but I hope he was if he wanted one of the most important jobs in the game. But if he is talking about respect, then he should have been here as well.&quot;<br />
<br />
&quot;When you have a three-member committee and important people are involved in the decision making, then it is not just about Sourav Ganguly, so these personal remarks have been very saddening.&quot;<br />
<br />
On Shastri making comments on public domain against him, Ganguly said: &quot;He should have shown a bit more maturity, especially for someone who has been in such committees for more than 10 years.&quot;<br />
<br />
On Anil Kumble starting his stint as Indian coach, Ganguly said: &quot;I wish him all the luck. As I said he is the best in the world. He is one of the champions of Indian cricket and he will take this team forward.&quot;<br />
<br />
Ganguly did not give a direct answer to the queries about it his animosity with Shastri being an open secret in Indian cricket.<br />
<br />
&quot;From my side, I have never gone on to make any comments to the media.&quot;<br />
<br />
Ganguly then also gave his account of the itinerary of that day.<br />
<br />
&quot;I had informed BCCI that there was a CAB Working Committee meeting that day. Being a president of CAB, I had to chair the meeting.&nbsp;Also the notification for a Working Committee is always given 14 days in advance whereas this meeting was fixed two days in advance.&nbsp;Ravi&#39;s meeting was scheduled at 4:15 pm, and I guess Ravi has got that received as well. BCCI had sent him the time.<br />
<br />
&quot;Now while interviewing other candidates, it went past 5 pm and I came out of the meeting. Then Mister (Ajay) Shirke (BCCI secretary) called me and said that others (Sachin Tendulkar, VVS Laxman and co-ordinator Sanjay Jagdale) are requesting if they can continue (with the interviews). I said &#39;fine, let&#39;s do that as it happens everywhere in the world&#39;. That&#39;s exactly what happened and I feel comments are very personal in nature.&quot;<br />

21 candidates shortlisted for Indian cricket head coach's role

The record books were rewritten twice in an astonishing run spree at Nottinghamshire&#39;s Trent Bridge ground yesterday which saw a record English one-day partnership and the most aggregate runs scored in a List A match.<br />
<br />
By the close in the Royal London One-Day Cup game between Notts and Northamptonshire, statisticians were checking to see if there had ever been a day like it anywhere in the world.<br />
<br />
The big hitting began from the start with Nottinghamshire&#39;s Riki Wessels and Michael Lumb sharing a record one-day partnership in England of 342 from 39.2 overs.<br />
<br />
Wessels eventually departed for a career-best 146, from 97 balls, while Lumb went on to make 184, also his best and a record for the county, as Nottinghamshire posted 445 for 8, the second highest score for a List A match in the world.<br />
<br />
The runs continued to flow when Northamptonshire chased down what would have been another record for a team batting second. But they fell short despite 128 from Rory Kleinveldt.<br />
<br />
Their total of 425 gave Nottinghamshire victory by 20 runs in a game which saw an unprecedented 870 runs scored in the day, three more than Surrey and Glamorgan managed in 2002.<br />
<br />
Afterwards Lumb joked: &quot;It was a bit twitchy. What a great game of cricket. Never in doubt.&quot;<br />
<br />
&quot;I was surprised they took it that deep but it&#39;s credit to them. Rory Kleinveldt was unbelievable. It was an unbelievable game. I don&#39;t think we could do too much more. I&#39;m proud of all the boys.&quot;<br />
<br />
The Nottinghamshire stand beat the previous record in England of 318 by Sourav Ganguly and Rahul Dravid for India against Sri Lanka at Taunton in the 1999 World Cup.<br />
<br />
Lumb and Wessels&#39; English record is the third-highest partnership in List A games, behind the 372 which Chris Gayle and Marlon Samuels took off Zimbabwe in the 2015 World Cup.<br />
<br />
The record for the highest team total is held by Surrey, who made 496-4 against Gloucestershire in 2007.<br />
<br />
List A matches are played over 40-60 overs.
