Sourav Ganguly, Jay Shah attend ACC Board meeting as decision on Asia Cup 2020 deferred

The Executive Board of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) on Monday deferred a decision on the fate of Asia Cup T20 2020 after meeting via video-conference. Speculations are rife that the Asia Cup 2020 might be postponed due to COVID-19 pandemic but in the meeting, the ACC emphasized on the importance of conducting the Asia Cup, scheduled to be hosted by Pakistan in the month of September.

While the Asia Cup 2020 is expected to be shifted to another country if the tournament is held, as India cannot travel to Pakistan. The ACC is expected to wait for ICC’s decision on the T20 World Cup in Australia, slated to be held in October-November before taking a decision on the Asia Cup.

"...the Board emphasised on the importance of holding the Asia Cup 2020. In light of the impact and consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic, possible venue options for the Asia Cup 2020 were discussed and it was decided to take the final decision in due course," an ACC press release stated after the meeting on Monday.

This was the first continental meeting attended by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) president Sourav Ganguly and secretary Jay Shah with the ACC board meeting chaired by BCB president Nazmul Hasan Papon.

While there were discussions regarding the postponement of the Asia Cup T20, no consensus could be reached. Another major topic discussed was ACC’s involvement in the 2022 Asian Games in China.

"The Board was also apprised of the status and progress of the ACC's involvement with the Asian Games 2022 in Hangzhou, China," it stated.
