Afghanistan have named Rashid Khan as their skipper for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, scheduled to be played in India and Sri Lanka. The leg-spinner will lead a 15-member squad that also marks the return of key players Mujeeb Ur Rahman and Fazalhaq Farooqi ahead of the global event. Mujeeb’s comeback strengthens Afghanistan’s spin attack, while Farooqi adds depth to the pace unit. Gulbadin Naib and Naveen-ul-Haq are also back in the side, with Naveen returning after recovering from a shoulder injury. The squad will get match practice during a three-match T20I series against West Indies in January, as Afghanistan aim to build on their historic semi-final run in the last T20 World Cup.
Afghanistan squad for T20 World Cup 2026
Rashid Khan (capt), Ibrahim Zadran (vice-capt), Rahmanullah Gurbaz (wk), Mohammad Ishaq (wk), Sediqullah Atal, Darwish Rasooli, Shahidullah Kamal, Azmatullah Omarzai, Gulbadin Naib, Mohammad Nabi, Noor Ahmad, Mujeeb Ur Rahman, Naveen-ul-Haq, Fazalhaq Farooqi and Abdullah Ahmadzai Reserves: AM Ghazanfar, Ijaz Ahmadzai and Zia Ur Rahman Sharifi Also read | Big hits, bigger impact: 5 players with most sixes in WPL history; 2 RCB players feature

ACB Chief selector explains the exclusion of Ghazanfar
Ahmad Shah Sulimankhil, ACB’s Chief Selector, explained the decision to leave out Allah Ghazanfar as he termed the cricketer unlucky to miss out on securing a place in the squad. "We had good discussions over the past few days and finalised the squad. Gulbadin Naib is a big-match player, and his return boosts our team. We are also pleased to have Naveen Ul Haq back, which enhances the quality of our fast bowling. "It was a tough decision to leave AM Ghazanfar out of the main squad, as his place made way for Mujeeb. Shahidullah Kamal performed well in the recent event and provided us with a valuable left-handed option, which is crucial in major tournaments," he said during the squad launch.
Afghanistan is placed in Group D
Afghanistan will play a three-match T20I series in the UAE against the West Indies from January 9 to 22 before heading to the marquee event. Afghanistan are placed in Group D alongside New Zealand, South Africa, United Arab Emirates and Canada. They will start their campaign against New Zealand on February 8 in Chennai.

IPL 2025: Gujarat Titans end Mumbai Indians' six-match winning run in last-ball thriller

Gujarat Titans registered a 38-run win over Sunrisers Hyderabad on Friday (May 2) in the ongoing edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025.
Gujarat Titans are currently second in the points table with seven wins out of the 10 matches played. They are closely followed by Royal Challenges Bengaluru who have the same points but lack behind on net run rate (NRR).
However, swashbuckling all-rounder Rashid Khan has not been able to make his mark for the franchise. He has been struggling to take wickets, and the batsmen are scoring sixes and boundaries against him. He has produced costly overs, but the team management is standing firm behind him and backing him to find his form as the playoffs near.
On Saturday, Rashid Khan opened up about the team’s performance, his personal challenges, and what lies ahead as the league heads into the playoffs. With the team sitting comfortably in the hunt for a playoff spot, Rashid offered a deep and candid reflection on the season so far and the competition that lies ahead.

Rashid started by acknowledging that the Titans’ campaign has been a positive one overall, with the team winning seven out of their ten matches so far. Despite a strong performance, Rashid noted that the loss to Rajasthan Royals, a setback that came unexpectedly, reminded them of the volatile nature of T20 cricket. "We lost only one match to Rajasthan Royals, but it was a close contest. In fhis format of the game, you can’t predict anything; one game can change the entire momentum,” he said.
However, Rashid stressed that the team’s focus remains sharp, and they’re determined to maintain their level of play through the business end of the league. “We’ve done well overall, but we should not take anything for granted. Every team is fighting for a spot in the playoffs, and it’s a tough race. The competition is tight, and there’s still a lot to play for,” he shared.
Looking ahead, Rashid highlighted the upcoming clash against Mumbai Indians as a significant challenge for the team. Mumbai has been in excellent form, winning several matches consecutively, making this one of the most anticipated encounters of the season. Rashid is aware of the stakes, emphasising that games like these define a team’s campaign. “It’s going to be a massive challenge for us. Mumbai has been playing really well, and it’s matches like these that determine where you end up. We’ll need to bring our best to the table,” he said.

'We need to focus one game at a time'

Rashid also pointed out that the Titans will have to handle the pressure of the race for the playoffs, where the margin for error is razor-thin. “We’ve still got work to do. Every match now is about staying in the hunt. We need to focus on one game at a time, and right now, Mumbai is our only focus.”
While Gujarat Titans as a team have excelled, Rashid Khan has faced his own set of challenges. As one of the best bowlers in world cricket, Rashid’s standards are sky-high, and he admitted that this season hasn’t seen him at his best. “I haven’t been able to bowl to my usual standards this season. I feel like I’ve missed the right line and length a few times, and as a result, I haven’t been able to put the same pressure on the batters,” he admitted.
Despite this, Rashid remains committed to improving his game. "The key is to maintain consistency and work on execution in every match. I’m looking to keep refining my bowling and improve my performance for the team," he added.
Despite the increasing speculation about Gujarat Titans potentially lifting the IPL trophy, Rashid emphasised the importance of focusing on the immediate task. The team’s collective aim is not to get ahead of themselves, but to keep their attention on the upcoming matches and securing their spot in the playoffs first. “We’re not thinking about the title right now. Our focus is on getting into the playoffs. Our plan is to keep it simple. That’s the first step,” Rashid said.
He acknowledged that while the ultimate goal is always the trophy, the team’s immediate objective is ensuring they remain consistent and make the playoffs. Only then will they look towards the final stages of the tournament.
Rashid also discussed how the pressure of big games is part and parcel of T20 cricket. "The competition is so intense in the IPL, and every game matters. In these situations, you must focus on execution, even if you’re not taking wickets. The most important thing is to maintain pressure, bowl your best balls, and let the game unfold naturally," he signed off.

Afghan cricketer Rashid Khan rewrites record books, becomes highest wicket-taker in T20 history

Rahmanullah Gurbaz hit a superb century before leg-spin magician Rashid Khan marked his 26th birthday by taking five wickets as Afghanistan thrashed South Africa by 177 runs in the second one-day international on Friday.

Gurbaz hit 105 as Afghanistan made 311-4 before the Proteas lost nine wickets for 61 runs to be bowled out for just 134 in the 35th over.

It was the seventh century in the 22-year-old's Gurbaz's ODI career and included 10 fours and three sixes.

"I had a hamstring injury but I try my best to stay on the ground and do my best for the team," said man-of-the-match Rashid after taking 5-19.

"It was a great opportunity for us to win the series against a big team, so I had to stay till the end."

Two days after winning the first ODI by six wickets, Afghanistan made a bright start as the openers capitalised on winning the toss.

Gurbaz and Riaz Hassan added 88 for the first wicket before Aiden Markram had Hassan leg before for 29.

That brought in Rahmat Shah (50) who shared a 101-run partnership with Gurbaz before the opener fell shortly after reaching his milestone, bowled by Nandre Burger for 105.

The innings slowed with that dismissal although Azmatullah Omarzai hit the accelerator with a rapid, undefeated 50-ball 86 which included six sixes, to ensure an awkward chase for the Proteas.

In reply, South Africa's openers, skipper Temba Bavuma, who top-scored with 38, and Tony de Zorzi (31) put on 73 for the first wicket.

But once they had departed, the Proteas fell apart.

Leg-spin star Rashid took 5-19 from nine overs and was ably supported by rookie off-spinner Nangeyalia Kharote who enjoyed figures of 4-26 in just just his third ODI appearance.

"I think the job for openers is to lay the foundation but wickets started falling and we came unstuck against spin," said Bavuma.

"It was not a good enough performance. We were not able to take ten wickets and that's a conversation we need to have. They were a lot better than us clinically."

Rashid's haul took his career total to 190 wickets in the format.

He dismissed middle-order dangermen Tristan Stubbs (five), Kyle Verreynne (two) and Wiaan Mulder (two) for the addition of just eight runs in back-to-back overs.

With the series wrapped up, Afghanistan will look to complete a whitewash in the third and final match in Sharjah on Sunday.

Afghanistan's Rashid Khan to return from injury for South Africa ODI series

Former West Indies captain and T20 great Kieron Pollard smashed Rashid Khan for five straight sixes in an over in The Hundred. Retiring from international cricket two years ago, Pollard took on Rashid, who is at the peak of his prowess, whacking him for five biggies and helping his team, Southern Brave, to a thrilling two-wicket win over Trent Rockets in Southampton.

With this, Pollard also became the first batter in all of cricket to smash five consecutive sixes in an over twice. During a T20I against Sri Lanka in 2021, Pollard became the first batter from West Indies to hit six sixes in an over to Akila Dananjaya.

With Southern Brave needing 49 off 20 balls, Pollard, who struggled in the beginning, scoring just six off 14 balls, upped the ante by taking on the best T20 bowler in the world.

He began with a first shot over the cow corner and then whacked two straight in the long-off area. He hit the fourth six at deep mid-wicket before wrapping up with another one over Rashid’s head.

Soon after, Pollard got out on 45 off 23 balls but had the game in the pocket for his team, which won the game by two wickets and one ball remaining.

Speaking of his match-winning knock, and especially his inning against Rashid, the former West Indies captain said, “I had to make a play at some point. I was really slow to start, but I didn't think it was a pitch where you could just come in and hit the ball, so I had to really try and calculate and pick my bowler.

“I've played against Rash a lot, and he's got me out a lot of times, so I had to see what was happening, but I knew the sort of line and length he was going to bowl.

“If he bowled full, I was going to back my strength, which is hitting straight, and he bowled three fuller balls, and it was right in my arc. I couldn't stop at that point in time, I had to get the maximum. Rash is a world-class bowler, but this was just one of the days where I took victory.”
