South Africa moved past their poor record in ICC knockouts to thrash Afghanistan by 9 wickets in the first T20 World Cup 2024 semifinal and enter their maiden final. On Wednesday (June 26, local time), in Trinidad, Aiden Markram-led Proteas rode on bowling heroics from Player-of-the-Match Marco Jansen (3 for 16) and spinner Tabraiz Shamsi (3 for 6) to dismiss the Rashid Khan-led Afghans, playing their maiden World Cup semifinal, for 56 (lowest-ever score in T20 WC semis) and chased it with 67 balls to spare.

Opting to bat first at the Brian Lara Stadium, Tarouba, Trinidad, Rashid & Co. had nothing going for themselves from the word go. Their in-form openers Ibrahim Zadran and Rahmatullah Gurbaz went back in a flash and they were soon reduced to 23 for 5 with pacers Jansen, Anrich Nortje and Kagiso Rabada chipping in with regular breakthroughs.

Jansen bowled in the right areas, and kept it on the stumps, to reap rewards whereas Shamsi removed the tail soon as the Afghans got bundled out for a mere 56 in 11.5 overs. Only Azmatullah Omarzai touched double digits with his 10 being the highest-score. Thus, Afghanistan attained some unwanted feats:

For Afghanistan, they can hold their heads high as an inspiring campaign came to an end, where they beat New Zealand and Australia. Taliban congratulate Rashid Khan after Afghanistan made history by making it to T20 WC semifinal | Video

On Monday (June 24, local time), Afghanistan beat Bangladesh by 8 runs, in Kingstown, St. Vincent, in what was the last Super 8 encounter in the T20 World Cup. With this, they qualified for their maiden T20 WC semifinals. Rashid Khan-led Afghanistan had to win to join India from Group 1 in the semis whereas Australia needed a favour from Bangladesh to progress ahead (following a loss to India). In a low-scoring thriller, Afghanistan edged past the Bangla Tigers to create history. During the run-chase, Gulbadin Naib's apparent cramp came under scrutiny, which many deemed was a time-wasting tactic in the rain-marred contest.

During Bangladesh's chase of 116, there were many rain breaks. During the 12th over, Naib went down holding his leg while standing in the slip cordon just before a delivery was to be bowled by spinner Noor Ahmed. He did so soon after head coach Jonathan Trott signalled his players to slow down the game with rain set to reappear. Back then, Bangladesh were two runs behind in the DLS score. Thus, Trott wanted his side to slow it down with the possibility of Bangladesh taking the upper hand, had that delivery been bowled.

Thus, Naib fell on the ground which many felt was a time-waste tactic. Following this, there was a break due to rain, which led to Bangladesh's target ultimately being revised to 114 in 19 overs. On resumption, they folded for 105 in 17.5 overs. Naib's act, however, continued to be the talking point, especially after he returned to the field and claimed a wicket and also sprinted with his teammates post their famous win.

However, Rashid defended the all-rounder after the game.

It's just an on-field injury which happens, the rain came and we just went off, it's not something [that] brought a massive difference in the game. We came back on field after five minutes and there was no massive difference. For me, it's just like a small injury happens, then you have to take some time."

Talking about the clash, Afghanistan made 115/5 after opting to bat first and rode on skipper Rashid and Naveen-ul-Haq's 4-fers to dismiss Bangladesh for 105.

T20 WC: 'It's not...' - Afghanistan captain Rashid Khan on Gulbadin Naib's cramps during Bangladesh tie

Afghanistan skipper Rashid Khan was full of excitement after beating Australia in Super 8 stage match of the ongoing 2024 T20 World Cup on Saturday (June 22). The win opened up Group 1 which has India and Bangladesh as other two teams.

The win means there are multiple scenarios for all three teams to qualify for the semis apart from India which are all but sure to enter last four after two back-to-back wins in the knockout stage.

Also Read: T20 World Cup: Can India be knocked out after Afghanistan's surprise win over Australia?

"Massive win for us as a team and as a nation. Great feeling. It's something we missed in last two years. Really happy with the win and super proud of the guys," said Rashid at the post-match presentation.

Talking about the game, Afghanistan batted first and scored 148 in 20 overs which skipper Rashid believed was a good total.

"140 was a good total on this wicket. We didn't finish as well as we should have."

"Opening partnership gave us best start. On this wicket, anything 130-plus, we were capable of defending it as long as we kept calm and had the belief. That's the beauty of this team, having all-rounders and having options," he said.

Australia eventually fell short by 21 runs, thanks to Gulbadin Naib's career-best 4/20, as Afghans bowled the mighty Aussies out for 127 in 19.2 overs.

Rashid heaped big praise on Naib and said: "The way Gulbadin bowled today - the experience he has, it came good today. The way Nabi started - the wicket of Warner - was also pleasing to see."

The skipper said the win was important for the country marred by years of war and exit of the US in the recent times which left them in hands of Taliban.

"It's so important for us back home and around the world. I'm sure they're proud and would've enjoyed the game," Rashid noted.

We didn't finish as well as we should have." "Opening partnership gave us best start. The way Nabi started - the wicket of Warner - was also pleasing to see." The skipper said the win was important for the country marred by years of war and exit of the US in the recent times which left them in hands of Taliban. "It's so important for us back home and around the world. I'm sure they're proud and would've enjoyed the game," Rashid noted. Afghanistan next play against Bangladesh on June 25 in their last Super 8 match.

T20 World Cup: Gurbaz, bowlers star in historic win for Afghanistan over New Zealand

Afghanistan captain Rashid Khan is confident of his team's run in T20 World Cup 2024, being held in the West Indies and USA. Many former cricketers and experts of the game have predicted that Afghanistan would reach the semifinals. The legspinner opened up on the predictions being made by the pundits and said that it is only a positive sign for the team -- highlighting their growth over the years -- ahead of their tournament opener versus Uganda, on Tuesday (Jun 4). Afghanistan impressed one and all in the last ICC event, i.e. the 2023 ODI World Cup in India, and narrowly missed out on a semifinal spot.

Ahead of Afghanistan's match versus Uganda, Rashid said, "A few people, they have mentioned Afghanistan is going to be there for semis. But we take that as a very positive sign, and something is there for us. Before, it used to be Afghanistan even contribution was harder for us to get qualified. And now to be nominated [nominated by experts], to be there in the top four. I think it's big for us, but for us, we don't look to those things a lot."

'Nothing is impossible for us as a team'

Rashid further highlighted how the last ODI WC performance has instilled faith in the team. He opined, "It's all about how we're going to be there in the ground, delivering. We were very near in the last World Cup [ODI World Cup] as well to be in the semis. We were just one game away from being in the semis and that's where I feel like the belief started that nothing is impossible and for us as a team. So yeah, looking forward we are really excited about this World Cup but as I said before as well, we take one game at a time and then see how it goes."

Rashid even stressed that Afghanistan are well prepared to handle the burden of expectations, emphasising that it is important for modern-day cricketers to perform under pressure.

In this regard, he stated, "Well, I feel in cricket there is always pressure. Either you play ICC events, or you play bilateral series, whatever the game you play, or any of the side against you play, there is always pressure. And for me, it's very simple. When there is pressure, you have to stick to your basics and you believe that basics what you can do and what is possible and what is under control."

"I feel that is more important than what people expect. So, the pressure will be there, but for us, and we need to keep it simple. We give 100% and you can't control that, like - the result. I think it's not under control. So, something not under our control, I feel like we better not think about it. And the pressure is always there, always there. But the more important thing is like, we stick to our basics, we do the right things, and we believe. I think that's the most important thing. I feel like we should do even under lots of pressure as well," Rashid added.

T20 World Cup: ‘We don’t look...’ - Rashid Khan reacts to experts predicting Afghanistan to reach semifinals

Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) batter Will Jacks was at his imperious best as he smashed his maiden IPL century to guide the team to a convincing nine-wicket victory against Gujarat Titans (GT), away from home. The English batter smashed GT superstar Rashid Khan for 28 runs to reach the milestone and announce his arrival on the IPL stage.

Set a challenging target of 201, the match was in the balance up until the 14th over when RCB needed 53 runs in 36 balls. However, things went pear-shaped for GT in front of their home crowd at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad when Mohit Sharma bowled the 15th over.

Jacks pummeled the first two balls of the over for a four and six to bring up his fifty. From thereon, it was pure carnage as the next four deliveries yielded 17 runs. With only 24 runs left to defend, captain Shubman Gill summoned Rashid Khan into the attack to conjure up his magic.

Virat Kohli, facing the first ball miscued the ball to deep midwicket for a single, bringing Jacks on strike. The no. 3 batter immediately went bang and smashed 6, 6, 4, 6 on the next four deliveries to bring the scores level.

With only one run required for victory and six runs to reach his personal milestone, Jacks slog swept a long hop on middle and leg over the deep midwicket boundary to kill the chase and reach his last fifty in only 10 deliveries. The previous record was 13 deliveries, set by Chris Gayle against Pune Warriors Indian in Bengaluru in 2013.

"Amazing feeling right now. Faf and Virat got us off to a very good start. I struggled early on, Virat kept his intensity up and I had the chance to get my rhythm. Once we had the time-out, we said let's get two really good overs and win the game. I just kept going and amazing feeling right now," said Jacks, who was adjudged the Player of the Match.

Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) batter Will Jacks was at his imperious best as he smashed his maiden IPL century to guide the team to a convincing nine-wicket victory against Gujarat Titans (GT), away from home.

The previous record was 13 deliveries, set by Chris Gayle against Pune Warriors Indian in Bengaluru in 2013. Afghanistan skipper Rashid Khan hits NO LOOK six against Ireland in T20I - WATCH

Afghanistan's designated T20I skipper Rashid Khan has been ruled of the upcoming three-match series against India. The spinner was initially included in the squad, however, he was anyway not expected to play before the confirmation on his absence from the series. Rashid is still recovering from the lower-back surgery done after the ODI World Cup which concluded in November 2023. The surgery also ruled him out of Australia's Big Bash League (BBL) and South Africa's SA20 tournament as well.

Afghanistan had named Ibrahim Zadran as Rashid's replacement as the skipper for the series at the time of squad announcement. Zadran had also led the Afghans in the recently-concluded UAE series as well. Speaking on Rashid's absence, Zadran said: "He is not totally fit, but is travelling with the team."

"We hope that he gets fit as soon as we expect him to. He's doing his rehab with the doctor, and we will miss him in the series."

On Tuesday, the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) announced the schedule for a three-match T20I series against India in January. However, with an eye on the 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL) season, Rashid will look to get back on the field.

Adelaide Strikers will now be on the hunt for a replacement as they look to start the season on a high. Afghanistan star man Rashid Khan will miss the upcoming Big Bash League (BBL) season as the Adelaide Strikers suffered a major blow before the start of the campaign. Rashid, who helped Afghanistan finish sixth in the ODI World Cup was crucial to the team’s success but has been troubled with back injuries that will see him spend time on the treatment table. Afghanistan tour of India: Rashid Khan and Co set to face World Cup runners-up in three-match T20I series

Afghanistan registered only their second win in World Cup history, and already their greatest-ever in ODIs – beating world champions England by 69 runs in Delhi on Sunday. Afghanistan coach and former English batter Jonathan Trott looked elated, much like everyone in the dressing room. Reflecting on his team’s famous win over England, Trott said though Afghanistan must shift focus to the next game quickly, he will not dampen the excitement in the dressing room, allowing players to enjoy the success.

"I'm very keen not to put a dampener on things or tell them to focus on the next game," Trott said. "I know from my career and my experience, I never soaked up enough, or enjoyed moments [like these]."

Ironically, Trott was part of the England XI that lost to Ireland in the 2011 CWC - then regarded as the greatest upset in the tournament's history. Twelve years later, he guided an emerging ODI team, Afghanistan, to a famous win over the defending champions.

Having learnt from his past experiences, Trott said he knew the magnitude of this win and wished to celebrate this victory with his teammates before making plans for the next game – against New Zealand in less than 72 hours.

"I'm certainly going to say to the guys, 'Enjoy tonight, spend some time together, whatever you want to do.' As soon as we land in Chennai, in 12-18 hours' time, we switch on for the next game, and it's back to business. It's important you celebrate your victories because they're so hard, and they're always such a challenge.

"We've got to move on quite quickly… but I think it's important that the guys enjoy it. But also, [that they] take stock and realise when they get a certain amount of things right in the 50 overs or the 100 overs, what they can achieve and the level of teams that they can put under pressure and compete with and win cricket matches,” Trott added.

‘Sharing dressing room with English players helped our team

With the growing culture of franchise-based T20 cricket, players from emerging or associate nations get to rub shoulders with superstars from the top teams, eventually helping them to understand the top cricketers from closed quarters.

Shedding light on the same, Trott acknowledged this, saying, "They get to know the ins and outs of each player, so there's that familiarity and also the confidence."

"Sometimes, I think when you see big Test-playing nations, you hold them in high regard. Playing with players like that, you see that they are human, and you are just as entitled to win or do well [as they are]... that's the beauty of the World Cup, isn't it? That's what cricket is about,” Afghanistan’s coach added.

Meanwhile, Afghanistan’s next match is against New Zealand on Wednesday (Oct 18) in Chennai.

ODI World Cup 2023: Emotional Afghanistan bowlers Rashid and Mujeeb dedicate win to quake victims back home

England batting great Joe Root has had a busy day on the field against Afghanistan in Delhi, picking up four catches. Of all the four he caught, the one to dismiss Rashid Khan was perhaps the best we have seen in this tournament so far. Besides contributing with his outfielding, Root picked one wicket for 19 runs in four overs. England dismissed Afghanistan on 284, with Adil Rashid topping the bowling charts with three scalps.

A well-settled Rashid Khan decided to take on England’s best bowler on the day, Rashid, only to find Root grabbing the catch by running and diving to his right.

Going by the sound that the shot produced, it looked like the ball might travel across the boundary rope with a flat trajectory, but Root, standing on deep long-on, ran to pick perhaps the catch of the day.

WATCH – Joe Root stuns Delhi crowd with ‘Catch of the Match’ against Afghanistan

India got off to a winning start in the home ODI World Cup on Sunday (Oct 8) at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. Taking on the five-time winners Australia, Rohit Sharma-led India were asked to bowl first and rode on Ravindra Jadeja's three-fer and two wickets each from Kuldeep Yadav and Jasprit Bumrah to bundle out the visitors for 199 in 49.3 overs. In reply, India were tottering at 2 for 3 before Virat Kohli's 85 and KL Rahul's 97 not out took them home with six wickets, and 52 balls, to spare.

Now, the Rohit-led Men in Blue will lock horns with Afghanistan in their second outing at the national capital New Delhi on Wednesday (Oct 11). Talking about Afghanistan, they fell flat in their tournament-opener, losing to Bangladesh in Dharamshala by six wickets after being out for 156. For them to give a good fight versus Team India, they need their batters to stand tall and pull off an all-round effort.

IND vs AFG, Head-to-head record in ODI World Cup

So far, both sides have met only once in the ODI World Cup history. In the 2019 edition, Kohli-led India only managed 224 for 8 after opting to bat first in Southampton. In reply, Rashid Khan-starrer Afghans were bundled out for 213 to lose by 11 runs with Mohammed Shami taking a hat-trick.

Pitch conditions and result prediction:

The fresh pitches at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, prepared using black soil, has made the surface more batting-friendly. Expect another high-scoring affair -- especially if India bat first -- with dew assisting the team batting second as well. It will be interesting to see what the captain winning the toss chooses to do.

India can also consider using a spinner less with one of Shardul Thakur or Mohammed Shami coming in. Overall, Shubman Gill-less India are expected to emerge on top with less hiccups.

Former West Indies legend Vivian Richards has named the bowler who he feels will end up as the leading wicket-taker in the upcoming ICC ODI World Cup 2023 edition in India. The forthcoming edition will be held entirely in India and kicks off on October 05, in Ahmedabad, with the defending champions England taking on New Zealand whereas the Rohit Sharma-led home side will start their run on October 08 in Chennai. Richards, who was part of Clive Llyod-led West Indies' title run in 1975 and 1979, feels Pakistan's Shaheen Afridi will return with most wickets in the mega event.

Speaking to the ICC, Richards said, "The leading wicket-taker in the World Cup will be Shaheen Afridi because I have seen him in Pakistan. I spent some time in the PSL and I have seen his massive growth. He is a highly determined individual. He is my man."

Not Bumrah, Starc or Rashid! Richards names THIS pacer to become CWC 2023's leading wicket-taker

Afghanistan’s legendary spinner Rashid Khan is set to end his boycott of the Big Bash League (BBL) for the upcoming season as he intends to participate in the tournament for the 14th season. According to a report on Thursday, August 24, Rashid is likely to feature in the upcoming drafts of the BBL where he is likely to be retained by Adelaide Strikers. The player had earlier boycotted the league due to Cricket Australia’s (CA) stand to withdraw from a white-ball series against Afghanistan on human-rights grounds.

What was the reason for Rashid’s withdrawal?

"I am really disappointed to hear that Australia have pulled out of the series to play us in March," Afghanistan T20I captain Rashid said in his statement at the time.

"I take great pride in representing my country, and we have made great progress on the world stage.”

The buzz created by the star spinner in January saw him withdraw from the BBL where his side Adelaide Strikers finished seventh in the standings. He has been with the franchise ever since, bursting on the scene as a 19-year-old in BBL season seven. He has since played every season of the BBL with the Southern Australian side and has been a centric figure.

CA decided to withdraw its men's team from a scheduled three-match series in the UAE in March, citing the Taliban's ban on women and girls' education and employment in Afghanistan.

Rashid to be retained by Adelaide Strikers?

It is expected that he will be retained by the Strikers as a Platinum pick in the drafts that take place on Sunday, September 3. He will be available for the first leg of the BBL before he is expected to travel to South Africa to represent in the SA20. He plays for the MI Cape Town, a franchise owned by the Indian Premier League (IPL) side Mumbai Indians.

Despite the heated situation between Afghanistan players and the CA, a couple of other players Mujeeb Ur Rahman and Izharulhaq Naveed had already committed to play in the BBL season 14. Rashid’s inclusion though has now paved the way for other names to participate in the draft. Mujeeb was drafted by Melbourne Renegades last season from Brisbane Heat while Sydney Sixers acquired Izharulhaq.

Rashid Khan to end BBL boycott threat, likely to participate in 2023-24 season for Adelaide Strikers

Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) announced star spinner Rashid Khan would miss the first two ODIs against Sri Lanka due to a lower-back injury but is likely to return for the final One-Dayer of the three-match series, starting 2nd June in Hambantota. The board said, "He will remain under full medical observation, and is expected to return for the final ODI on June 7."

Rashid’s absence means Mohammad Nabi, Mujeeb Ur Rahman and Noor Ahmad will shoulder the responsibility among them as Afghanistan gear up for the 50-over World Cup later this year. With them being one of the eight teams to have directly qualified for the mega event and Sri Lanka set to play the qualifiers to get through, this is Afghanistan’s bright chance to prepare for the 10-team tournament.

Last month, ACB announced the 15-man squad for the Sri Lanka ODIs, led by Hashmatullah Shahidi. After this series, Afghanistan will travel to Bangladesh for the one-off Test, while Sri Lanka will head to Zimbabwe to participate in the qualifiers.

Talking about Rashid Khan, the number one-ranked T20I bowler was instrumental in helping his IPL franchise – Gujarat Titans, reach the second successive final by picking up 27 wickets – second-most by any bowler this season.
Although Gujarat lost the finals to Chennai Super Kings by five wickets, Noor returned with two wickets to his name in the finale, while Rashid went wicketless, conceding 44 runs from three overs.

IPL 2023, Qualifier 2: Rashid Khan will hold key for Gujarat, is handy against Rohit, SKY, says Chris Gayle

After a riveting end to the league stage, Qualifier 1 of IPL 2023 will be held on Tuesday evening (May 23) with the defending champions Hardik Pandya-led Gujarat Titans (GT) taking on the four-time winners Chennai Super Kings (CSK). Talking about the GT franchise, they finished at the top of the points table (with 20 points) whereas Dhoni & Co. ended at the second spot with 17 points from 14 games.

While GT have a 3-0 head-to-head record versus the Yellow Army, they will be wary of CSK's experience in the playoff stages of the premier T20 tournament. Chennai have played the most games in the playoffs (24) and won as many as 15 matches (most by any team). Thus, former Indian batter Virender Sehwag revealed the player who will be the trump card for Gujarat in their marquee clash versus Chennai. Sehwag feels Rashid Khan, currently the second-highest wicket-taker (24 scalps) in IPL 2023, will be Gujarat's trump card.

'Rashid Khan is the trump card for Gujarat'

"Rashid Khan is the trump card for Gujarat. If they want wickets, they bring him. And then the way Hardik has used Rashid, it is commendable. Rashid likes to break partnerships and now he has become the most successful bowler of this season on the basis of his excellent performance," Sehwag said while speaking ahead of Qualifier 1.

The Afghan spinner has churned out 24 wickets at an economy of 7.82 and an average of 18.25, including a hat-trick. He has contained runs as well as accounted for wickets in crunch situations. Rashid has also groomed fellow countryman and Gujarat teammate Noor Ahmad, who ended the league stage with 13 wickets in ten games.

Meanwhile, former Indian cricketer-turned-commentator Sanjay Manjrekar analysed both teams, while part of the same panel, and said, "Chennai Super Kings and Gujarat Titans have been very similar teams tactically. After a riveting end to the league stage, Qualifier 1 of IPL 2023 will be held on Tuesday evening (May 23) with the defending champions Hardik Pandya-led Gujarat Titans (GT) taking on the four-time winners Chennai Super Kings (CSK).

'Rashid Khan is the trump card for Gujarat' "Rashid Khan is the trump card for Gujarat. If they want wickets, they bring him. And then the way Hardik has used Rashid, it is commendable. IPL 2023: Virender Sehwag names Hardik Pandya-led GT's trump card ahead of Qualifier 1 vs CSK

Afghanistan’s Rashid Khan produced the performance of the tournament against Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede Stadium on Friday in IPL 2023. The most successful spinner in this format had a night to remember, even though his team fell shy of the target by 27 runs. In the first innings, Rashid returned with figures of four for 30, and during the chase, when GT’s back was against the wall, his incredible 79 from 32 balls, which included ten sixes and three fours, brought the touring side closer to the target.

During MI’s batting, when only five wickets fell, and they scored a whopping 218 for five, Rashid’s four-wicket haul looks like a great deal. The ranked-number-one T20I bowler in the world accounted for the openers Ishan and Rohit, Nehal Wadhera and finisher Tim David. However, it was Suryakumar Yadav’s maiden IPL hundred, which hogged all the limelight.

The India batter, who is also a master stroke-maker in this format, unleashed himself and slammed 11 fours and six sixes on his way to scoring 103* off 49 balls. With this, he also climbed to the third spot for highest run-scorers (479 runs from 12 matches) this season.

While chasing, GT was down and out and probably looked like running the lost race. That equation changed when Rashid came out to bat – and the scorecard read 100 for seven. The right-handed batter turned the heads around with his batting display and sent shivers down the spine of the bowlers and even the MI fans who were present inside the stadium.

Rashid hammered the premium bowlers to parts of the park, let alone sparing the newcomers during that knock. Although he did look like pulling the rabbit out of the hat at one stage, with too much to chase in the end caught up with him eventually. Following that show-stopping performance, Rashid earned praises from all over and even called this knock his most memorable one.

Posting on his social media handles, Rashid wrote, ‘This will be one of the most memorable innings 🙌

Thank you for your love and support’

Meanwhile, both Mumbai Indians and Gujarat Titans are in the top three and are likely to seal the playoffs berths alongside Chennai Super Kings, who are at the second spot with 15 points from 12 games. While GT is leading the chart with 16 points, they still need to win a game in their remaining two matches to ensure a top-two finish.
