MS Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings (CSK) failed to defend a 201-run target versus Shikhar Dhawan's Punjab Kings (PBKS) in match 41, in Chennai, of the IPL 2023 edition on Sunday (April 30). Opting to bat first, CSK rode on Devon Conway's 92, Ruturaj Gaikwad's 37, Shivam Dube's 28, and Dhoni's 4-ball 13* to post 200/4. In reply, Punjab chased down the total with contributions from the top six and Sikandar Raza's unbeaten cameo (7-ball 13*).

CSK paid the price for not bowling well in the powerplays and while they bounced back in the middle overs, their pacers -- especially Tushar Deshpande -- went for plenty in the death overs as they couldn't defend 201. This became the first time that a visiting side prevailed on top in a 200-plus chase at the Chepauk in the IPL. While the end result didn't favour Dhoni's troops, the Yellow Army captain achieved a massive feat during his 4-ball 13*.

Courtesy of his cameo, filled with two sixes, Dhoni completed 1,000 runs in just the 20th over of a T20 inning. Thus, he became only the second player to achieve the historic feat after Mumbai Indians' (MI) Kieron Pollard. Meanwhile, Gujarat Titans' (GT) David Miller is a distant third in the list of batters with most runs in the 20th over of a T20 inning.

Dhoni also holds the record for most runs in the 20th over of an IPL innings. The 41-year-old has 709 runs in the 20th over whereas MI's former all-rounder Pollard comes next, with 405 runs.

Dhoni-led CSK occupy the fourth spot in the points table after their defeat versus PBKS. They next face second-ranked Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), in Lucknow, on Wednesday afternoon (May 03).

IPL 2023: Another day, another milestone! MS Dhoni joins MI legend in elite list during CSK-PBKS tie

Following the annihilation at the hands of Lucknow Super Giants in Mohali on Friday night, Punjab Kings batting coach Wasim Jaffer backed his bowlers to come back stronger, saying there are no serious issues as such as this line-up defended a few totals in the past.

Batting first, Lucknow hammered 257 for five – the second-highest total in IPL history and beat hosts PBKS by 51 runs. Barring Rahul Chahar, who conceded 29 from four overs, every bowler went over 12 runs per over.

Starting with Kyle Mayers, who continued his excellent run at the top – hitting yet another fifty, other LSG batters also showed up and scored runs at will. While Ayush Badoni and Nicholas Pooran came close to scoring fifties, hitting 43 and 45, respectively, all-rounder Marcus Stoinis was the star of the night – who scored 72 off 40 balls, hitting six fours and five sixes, and also picked up Shikhar Dhawan’s wicket.

The onslaught saw several records getting broken as Lucknow walked away with a win in the end.

After the match, Jaffer, while speaking with the media, said,

"Don't think there are any serious concerns (about the bowling attack) because they had thrice defended scores in tough conditions. Be it against Mumbai or Rajasthan, even in the earlier Kolkata game. The bowling unit has always performed for us this season. Today was one of those days when everything clicked for the opposition, and we were a bit clueless. Our bowlers will come back strong," Jaffer said.

Shedding light on what could have been done to avoid getting hit for so many runs in the first innings, Jaffer said the bowlers could have gone for Plan B – that was to bowl slower balls keeping in mind the longer boundaries. Adding that the opponents executed the same plan, and that, it did work for them.

"Perhaps we could have gone to Plan B a bit more. Like using the slower balls a lot more and using the longer boundary consistently. They (LSG) did this a lot more effectively, and it worked for them. But again, most of their shots were clearing the boundary quite easily, so we have to give them credit for that," Jaffer added.

Talking about Dhawan’s decision to bowl first, which after the first innings total received some flak, Jaffer backed his side’s skipper, saying several factors led to that decision. He also mentioned how the latest trend of teams opting to chase after winning the toss had little role in making this call.

"It is a trend for IPL sides to opt for chasing after winning the toss. Dew was obviously a factor too. We had seen it during practice and that was a reason as well. But when the opposition gets to 257, it's always tough to chase. They got a fast start in the powerplay and never slowed down at any stage. You have to give them credit," Jaffer said.

PBKS never in contest

Chasing 258, was always a tall order for Punjab Kings (PBKS) despite having returning skipper Shikhar Dhawan and Liam Livingstone in the team. It was not a good start for them as the skipper was dismissed in the first over which made the task vulnerable. Atharva Taide then took the initiative into his own hands as he turned the screws with a well-made 66 off 36. His innings consisted of 8 fours and 2 sixes but could take the hosts any closer to the win.

Although there were useful contributions by the middle-order batters, PBKS could only reach the 201-run mark. The likes of Sikandar Raza (36), Liam Livingstone 23), Sam Curran (21) and Jitesh Sharma all got starts but could help their side to the win.

Yash Thakur was the pick of the bowlers for LSG as he ended with four wickets while Naveen-ul-Haq scalped three wickets. Ravi Bishnoi and two and Marcus Stoinis were also amongst the wickets that saw PBKS get bowled out and therefore handed LSG a 56-run win.

LSG demolish PBKS bowling

Put into bat first, LSG were at their fluent best as openers Kyle Mayers and KL Rahul (12) took the attack on PBKS as they put together an opening partnership of 41. Mayers scored the third-highest fifty in the IPL 2023 after it took only 20 balls for him which also saw him score 4 sixes and 7 fours. Mayers was hitting the ball all over the park as he took on Arshdeep Singh, Kagiso Rabada and Gurnoor Brar.

After Mayers was dismissed in the sixth over, it was Ayush Badoni (43 off 24) and Stoinis who took charge of the innings. They both put together an 89-run stand for the third wicket where Badoni scored 3 sixes and 3 fours. Stoinis also scored 5 sixes and 6 fours in his marathon innings that took LSG over 200.

This was also the second time in the history of IPL that a team has scored 250 plus with Royal Challengers Bangalore's (RCB) total of 263 still the highest in the competition’s history.

Lucknow Super Giants will next take on Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) at home in Lucknow as they keep pace with other teams to make the playoffs as league leaders. The contest will take place on Monday, 1 May while they will also face Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at the same venue on Wednesday. On the flip side, Punjab will look to return back to winning ways when they take on Chennai Super Kings at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Sunday, April 30.

IPL 2023: LSG down PBKS by 56 runs on home turf after milestone performance with bat

Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) star Marcus Stoinis will face a race against time to be fit for the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) clash on Monday after he injured his finger. Playing against Punjab Kings in the India Premier League (IPL) Stoinis produced a match-winning knock that saw LSG mount 257/5, the second-highest score in the IPL history. While the extent of the injury is still unknown, Stoinis will be optimistic about his chances to make the Playing Xi in the RCB clash.

"It's been better but yeah, it is what it is," Stoinis said after the game.

"We will get a scan later,” the Aussie star added.

Stoinis was at his fluent best at the PCA stadium in Mohali on Friday, April 29 after he smashed a quickfire 72 off 40 while also scalping a wicket to take home the Player of the Match award. His innings consisted of 5 sixes and 6 fours that propelled LSG to 257/5 with helpful contributions from the other players.

"We were joking about the difference between that and our surface at home, and how we can cash in and take advantage of this beautiful batting wicket.

"No, I wasn't [thinking about 250]. I don't think Ayush was either. We were just trying to build a partnership. He got off to a flyer as well and was hitting some nice shots; he's a very talented player. We were just trying to keep building on that and that was our only focus,” Stoinis said in addition.

Mumbai Indians skipper Rohit Sharma created history in the match against Punjab Kings during his innings of 27-ball 44. Rohit hit four fours and three huge sixes in his innings to help lay the platform for Mumbai while chasing 215.

Rohit, with this three sixes, became the first Indian batter in the Indian Premier League (IPL) to record 250 sixes.
Arshdeep leads PBKS to thrilling win

MI did not have the best start to their innings as they started their run chase of 215 when Ishan Kishan (1) was dismissed in the second over. However, skipper Rohit Sharma (44) and Cameron Green (67 off 43) helped Mumbai mount a smart chase. Rohit was dismissed in the 10th over after which Suryakumar Yadav (57 off 26) joined the party and almost helped Mumbai to a win. However, Suryakumar was dismissed in the 18th over which saw a major change in momentum.

With 16 to defend in the final over, Arshdeep Singh was the hero of the match for PBKS as he kept Tim David away from the strike. In extraordinary events, he dismissed Tilak Varma (3) and Nehal Wadhera (0) on back-to-back deliveries and broke the stump on both occasions. In the final over he only gave away two runs and guided PBKS to a famous win.

Earlier, Sam Curran and Harpreet Singh Bhatia's quick-fire knocks took Punjab Kings' total to 214/8 against Mumbai Indians at Wankhede Stadium on Saturday.

With Shikhar Dhawan and Liam Livingstone getting ruled out ahead of the LSG clash the last time, the team still managed to cross the line under a new skipper (Sam Curran) and with a new hero (Sikandar Raza) at the helm. Against RCB in an afternoon game this time, PBKS will aim to repeat heroics. Although they have three wins in five games played, the Punjab side still hasn’t got the winning momentum on their side as they would have liked. While Dhawan looks certain to make a return to the XI, boosting the batting order at the top, Liam’s inclusion is still under question, more so given how Matthew Short has played so far. ALSO READ: IPL 2023: LSG down RR in first home game of season, beat hosts by 10 runs in low-scoring affair In the bowling department, PBKS will depend on its new-ball bowlers in Arshdeep Singh and Protean Kagiso Rabada to do the magic early on. Considering Rahul Chahar hasn’t delivered up to the mark yet, the team would still bank on him to perform against the in-form pair of Faf du Plessis and Glenn Maxwell – both of whom wreaked havoc against CSK in the previous game. Meanwhile, Sikandar Raza and Shahrukh Khan returning to form is a bonus for PBKS, who have missed the firepower in the lower order lately. Talking about the travelling RCB team, they are coming off fresh from their narrow home defeat against Chennai Super Kings. The side that has relied on its top order to deliver on most occasions will have the same concerns moving ahead in the tournament. With RCB’s Indian players unable to find their feet as of now, the franchise will again want the trio of Virat Kohli, Faf and Maxwell to deliver with the bat. What’s best for them is Mohammed Siraj’s form, who surely will play as the x-factor. However, given the pitch’s history at the venue, expect a change in the lineup, as Josh Hazlewood could get a game. Result Prediction Carrying the little momentum, they gained from the win over LSG, Punjab Kings at home will start as favourites against RCB. Predicted XIs of both teams – PBKS - Shikhar Dhawan (C), Prabhsimran Singh, Matthew Short, Harpreet Singh Bhatia, Sikandar Raza, Sam Curran, Jitesh Sharma (wk), Shahrukh Khan, Harpreet Brar, Kagiso Rabada, Arshdeep Singh RCB - Virat Kohli, Faf du Plessis (c), Mahipal Lomror, Glenn Maxwell, Shahbaz Ahmed, Dinesh Karthik (wk), Harshal Patel, Wanindu Hasaranga, Josh Hazlewood, Vijaykumar Vyshak, Mohammed Siraj

Despite the regular fall of wickets, Punjab kept scoring at a good rate and got a partnership going between Jitesh Sharma, who hit some big shots, and Brar to stay alive.

Tewatia has endured a reputation sorts in recent times as a pitch-hitter while winning matches for GT late on. IPL 2023: Rahul Tewatia opens up on match-winning cameo vs PBKS, says 'I backed myself and executed the shot'

Gujarat Titans (GT) edged past Punjab Kings (PBKS) in match 18 of the IPL 2023 edition on Thursday evening (April 13), at the IS Bindra Stadium, Mohali. Opting to bowl first, GT restricted Shikhar Dhawan-led Punjab for 153 for 8 courtesy of Mohit Sharma's 2 for 18. In reply, GT dominated the run-chase for a large part but Punjab bowlers stretched the game till the final over where Rahul Tewatia's timely hit (5 not out off 2 balls) propelled the defending champions to a six-wicket win with a ball to spare.

From GT, opener Shubman Gill top-scored with a 49-ball 67. While he continues to grow in stature with his consistency, questions still arise on his ability to finish a run-chase and strike big towards the latter stage of the innings. He reached 35 off 22 balls but slowed down considerably, with GT losing Sai Sudharshan and captain Hardik Pandya, during the fag end of the run-chase. As a result, Gill took another 18 balls to get to his fifty. Holding one end, he was expected to complete the run-chase but got dismissed in the final over, by Sam Curran, with GT still requiring six off four balls.

Thus, former cricketer-turned-commentator Sanjay Manjrekar has schooled Gill and asked him to take a leaf out of MS Dhoni, one of the greatest finishers of all-time.

Manjrekar, in conversation with ESPNCricinfo, said, "Champion teams are those who are mindful of their weak areas even when winning matches and tackle the same. Against KKR, there was a clear lesson for Gujarat that on the good pitch don’t play with only five bowlers."

He further opined, "From this game, the takeaway is that if a batter is set, he should try and finish the game in the 18th or 19th over. If you are taking it till the end, show a temperament like MS Dhoni and don’t get out. Shubman Gill might be asked how the game went to the 20th over. Sai Sudharsan scored at a strike rate of around 100. David Miller was also rather quiet."

Gill, too, spoke about his innings and said after the match, "It got slower with the old ball. So we needed to get off to a good start in the powerplay. We lost a bit of momentum when Hardik bhai got out. It wasn't a big score but it was important to rotate the strike and not have dot balls."

At the post-match presentation, Hardik pointed out, "To be very honest I would not appreciate for the game to go this deep. There was definitely a lot for us to learn from this game... It would have been a tough pill to swallow if the game had gone the other side. I would like to finish the game earlier, not a big fan of taking it to the last over."

Thus, Gill will be eager to remain unbeaten in GT's upcoming run-chases in IPL 2023 and also increase his strike rate as his inning progresses.

Owing to getting medical clearance from the ECB, injured England all-rounder Liam Livingstone is set to join his IPL franchise, Punjab Kings, as early as April 10th. Liam, who was supposed to join the Punjab squad ahead of IPL 2023, missed the two games played due to the flare-up of the ankle injury he sustained during the Hundred last year.

Besides, the hard-hitting batter suffered a knee injury during his maiden Test against Pakistan in Rawalpindi four nearly months back and has missed competitive cricket since. As per the latest report in ESPNcricinfo, Liam said he is feeling better, and by the end of this week, he will fly to India and get going in the IPL. If he joins the PBKS squad by April 10th, he could come in contention for April 13th home game against Gujarat Titans.

Elaborating on how on his current status, Liam said he is much better and has settled down a bit after taking some injections last week. Liam added after taking those injections, he managed to move out a bit, did some running and played cricket too.

IPL 2023: Big Boost for Punjab Kings as Liam Livingstone set to join squad by April 10th

Shikhar Dhawan-led Punjab Kings (PBKS) are off to a flying start in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 edition. PBKS have started off on a winning note, emerging on top in their first two games of the new season under the new captain. Dhawan led the charge with the bat in his side's last outing, versus the Rajasthan Royals (RR) in Guwahati on Wednesday (April 05), with a fine 56-ball 86* as Punjab beat Sanju Samson & Co. by five runs in a high-scoring thriller.

The 16th edition of the IPL is a vital season for Dhawan. The senior Indian player has been dropped from the ODI side, having lost his T20I place back in late 2021, and needs a memorable run with the bat in IPL 2023 to have any chance of featuring in the Indian squad for the 2023 ODI World Cup at home. After his splendid knock versus RR, former Indian off-spinner Harbhajan Singh backed Dhawan and questioned 'why he is not getting a chance in the Indian team'.

'You gave Rohit, Kohli and KL plenty of chances but there is no place for Dhawan'

"Shikhar has also led the Indian side in many tours but suddenly we saw that after the role of Shikhar was over he was sidelined as if he is not needed anymore. I felt bad on seeing this because the treatment for everyone should be the same. He is a big player and has given too much to Indian cricket," Harbhajan shared his views on YouTube.

"You can not treat him like this. He played a good knock of 86 in 56 balls. I will not name anyone here. For instance, let's take Rohit Sharma or Virat Kohli, or KL Rahul who are big names. You gave them plenty of chances but on the other hand, there is no place for Shikhar Dhawan in the team now. He has always contributed for the team. Then why he is not getting a chance in the Indian team? Talking about fitness, he is as fit as Virat Kohli," Harbhajan further added.

The senior Indian batter has been replaced by Shubman Gill who has had a remarkable run across formats. Dhawan will still hope for a good IPL season with the bat and pray for a return to the national side for the ODI WC.

Dhawan-led PBKS will now face the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in Hyderabad on Sunday evening (April 09) and hope to keep their winning run going in IPL 2023.

RR lose thriller

On a batting-friendly track, RR failed to capitalize in the start and lost surprise opener Ravichandran Ashwin (0) and Yashasvi Jaiswal (11) early. While Sanju Samson (42) and last season’s Orange Cap winner Jos Buttler (19) tried to keep RR in the contest, it never quite happened for them as they lost wickets at regular intervals.

IPL 2023: PBKS win last over thriller to maintain unbeaten start to campaign; Jurel's effort goes in vain

Punjab Kings opener Prabhsimran Singh finally hit his maiden IPL fifty in his fifth season, against Rajasthan Royals in Guwahati on Wednesday night. After adapting the daring approach this season, the right-handed batter found success with the bat, having scored 23 and 23 and 60 in two games played. Particularly against Rajasthan, he took the attack to the opposition and had their backs against the wall in no time.

Upon completing his maiden IPL fifty, Simran thanked God and showered praises on his fellow opener and Punjab captain, Shikhar Dhawan for backing him throughout.

“I’m very thankful to God for my first fifty in five years of playing the IPL. It was an enjoyable knock, and I hope to continue like this,” Simran told Jitesh Sharma in a video posted by IPL on its social media handles.

Prabhsimran also said Shikhar gave him the confidence to express himself and go for the kill from ball one. He added that Dhawan told him to continue playing his natural game and that he (Dhawan) will take care of everything else.

“Shikhar Dhawan asked me if he should take strike since I had never faced Trent Boult before, but I told him I’ll take the strike. He backed me throughout my innings. Whenever we spoke to each other while batting, he told me to play my natural game and express myself, the rest I’ll handle,” Prabhsimran added.

Speaking about what changed for him this season or what is the secret behind his little success so far, the right-hander said that working hard on both fronts – batting and wicket-keeping, brought him laurels.

“There are no secrets (to his recent consistency), but there’s a lot of preparation around my fitness, batting and wicket-keeping. I try and practice in the nets just like I would in a match,” he added.

Meanwhile, Punjab will now take on struggling SunRisers Hyderabad in an away game on April 9th on Sunday.

In the first of the two matches on Saturday, Punjab Kings will open their IPL 2023 campaign against the former two-time winners Kolkata Knight Riders in Mohali. The weather, however, is likely to play a spoilsport as thunderstorms are expected to halt the proceedings for the afternoon game. With untimely rains making headlines in north India lately, game 2 of this season could suffer the adverse fate of getting washed out too. Weather report and Head-to-Head record While the probability of precipitation is as high as 78%, the chances of thunderstorms are close to 50%. Both fans and players will pray to the rain Gods to stay away from this exciting clash as Mohali gear up to host the first IPL game since 2019. Meanwhile, if the match goes ahead, KKR will have an upper hand going by the head-to-head record against Punjab. Over the past 15 years, both teams have faced each other in 30 matches, where Kolkata came on the top on 20 occasions while Punjab won just ten games. Even in the last season, Kolkata beat them by six wickets. While for the away side (KKR), an injury to regular skipper Shreyas Iyer resulted in the last-minute change in the leadership group, whereas out-of-favour India opener Shikhar Dhawan will captain the Punjab side following the release of the opener and last year’s skipper Mayank Agarwal. The inclusion of two overseas all-rounders, Sam Curran and Sikandar Raza, will boost the franchise’s confidence; PBKS will surely miss three of their star players, injured and out for the whole season Jonny Bairstow alongside Liam Livingstone and South African seamer Kagiso Rabada. Kolkata, on the other hand, will also miss Bangladesh duo of Shakib Al Hasan and Litton Das due to national commitments. Considering the surface in Mohali has a history of providing the right balance between bat and ball, it will be exciting to see how both teams fare in this new season. The first of the double header begins at 3:30 PM IST. Here are the squads of both teams – Punjab Kings Squad - Shikhar Dhawan(c), Matthew Short, Harpreet Singh Bhatia, Bhanuka Rajapaksa, Shahrukh Khan, Prabhsimran Singh(w), Sikandar Raza, Sam Curran, Rishi Dhawan, Harpreet Brar, Rahul Chahar, Arshdeep Singh, Raj Bawa, Nathan Ellis, Baltej Singh, Jitesh Sharma, Atharva Taide, Vidhwath Kaverappa, Mohit Rathee, Shivam Singh Kolkata Knight Riders Squad - Venkatesh Iyer, Rahmanullah Gurbaz(w), Nitish Rana(c), Rinku Singh, N Jagadeesan, Andre Russell, Sunil Narine, Shardul Thakur, Lockie Ferguson, Varun Chakaravarthy, Umesh Yadav, David Wiese, Mandeep Singh, Anukul Roy, Kulwant Khejroliya, Vaibhav Arora, Harshit Rana, Suyash Sharma

Day two of IPL 2023 is a double-header, with Punjab Kings hosting Kolkata Knight Riders in the first game at IS Bindra Stadium in Mohali. Two teams that finished sixth and seventh on the points table last season have a new captain-coach combination this time. While Shikhar Dhawan and Trevor Bayliss will oversee proceedings at the PBKS camp, Nitish Rana and Chandrakant Pandit will be at the helm at KKR. Specifically for KKR, Shreyas Iyer’s injury has resulted in a change in captaincy for this season. Moreover, both teams will miss some star players for the opening encounter. While England’s Jonny Bairstow is out for the whole season, Liam Livingstone (injury scare) and seamer Kagiso Rabada (national duty) also remain out of contention for today’s game for Punjab. On the other hand, KKR will miss the Bangladesh star pair of Shakib Al Hasan and Litton Das as they are involved bilateral series against Ireland. After releasing Mayank Agarwal ahead of this season, captain Dhawan could get company from Prabhsimran Singh, Australia’s Matthew Short or even Sri Lanka’s Bhanuka Rajapaksa. The addition of IPL’s costliest buy-ever Sam Curran will boost their bowling line-up, which includes Indian internationals like Arshdeep Singh and Rahul Chahar. For Kolkata Knight Riders, we could see a new opening pair in Afghanistan’s Rahmanullah Gurbaz and N Jagadeesan whereas Venkatesh Iyer could take up the number three spot. With a sorted middle order, KKR’s bowling will pose some threat to Punjab with star names like Sunil Narine, Umesh Yadav, Shardul Thakur and Lockie Ferguson. Given the introduction of the new impact-player rule, it remains to be seen what strategy both teams apply while finalising their XIs.
Punjab start on winning note

Asked to chase 192 runs, KKR did not have the best of starts and lost three wickets in the powerplay. The likes of Mandeep Singh, Anukul Roy and Rahmanullah Gurbaz all departed in quick succession as KKR were left to play catch-up. However, a useful partnership between Venkatesh Iyer (34 off 28) and Nitish Rana (24 off 17) saw the two-time champions stay in the hunt.

But KKR again lost way and were 146/7 in 16 overs before the rain started to play a part. Needing 46 runs to win in 24 balls, KKR had lost seven wickets and paid a price for the poor start and lost the contest by seven runs on the DLS method.

An explosive half-century by Bhanuka Rajapaksa and his 86-run stand with skipper Shikhar Dhawan helped Punjab Kings reach a competitive total of 191/5 against Kolkata Knight Riders in their Indian Premier League (IPL) match at the home setting of Punjab Cricket Association IS Bindra Stadium in Mohali on Saturday.

After being put to bat first by KKR, PBKS got off to a solid start. Opener Prabhsimran Singh provided some early blitz, smashing Umesh Yadav for a six over the square leg on the fourth ball of the innings. Tim Southee was also smashed for two successive fours and a six in the second over. He was the pick of the bowlers for KKR, taking 2/54 in his four overs, while Narine, Varun and Umesh also got a wicket each.

KKR will next take on Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Tuesday, April 4. On the horizon, Punjab Kings will take on last season’s finalist Rajasthan Royals at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati on Wednesday.

IPL 2023: Punjab Kings handed setback ahead of season kickoff, THIS key star to miss opening clash against KKR

The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 edition will start on March 31 with the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) taking on the defending champions Hardik Pandya-led Gujarat Titans (GT). Over the years, IPL has become a huge brand in the cricketing fraternity and every season is keenly awaited. Since the tournament's inception, players such as MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Suresh Raina, Chris Gayle, AB de Villiers, David Warner, KL Rahul, Ravindra Jadeja, Dwayne Bravo, Lasith Malinga, Kieron Pollard, Brendon McCullum, etc. have played a big role in popularising the cash-rich league and making it the best T20 tournament across the globe.

Recently, former Indian spinner Anil Kumble, who led the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) to the IPL 2009 final, named Universe Boss Gayle as IPL's undisputed Greatest Of All Time (G.O.A.T)

Kumble while speaking on Jio Cinema said, "There are plenty of them; it’s difficult to pick just one. I can certainly look back and say probably a Chris Gayle, someone who is larger than life. The way he came across as a player! What he brought to RCB and the way he sorts of changed the whole powerplay and the power he brought to batting."

Gayle started his IPL career with the two-time champions Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) but his fortunates changed when he was picked by the RCB camp in 2011. He went on to win the Orange Cap -- awarded to a player with most runs in a season -- in the 2011 and 2012 editions and became a regular in their line-up. In 2018, the swashbuckling batter joined the Kings XI Punjab (KXIP), now known as the Punjab Kings (PBKS). During his run for the Punjab franchise, Kumble served as the head coach.

The left-handed batter scored a total of 4,965 runs in his IPL career, featuring in as many as 142 matches at a strike rate of 148.96. He remains the eighth-highest run-getter to date and has most centuries (six) under his belt in the tournament as well.

Not Virat, Dhoni, Raina or De Villiers! Anil Kumble names THIS superstar as undisputed G.O.A.T. of IPL

IPL franchise Punjab Kings have announced that star-English batter Jonny Bairstow is ruled out of the upcoming season owing to a freak injury he suffered while playing golf with his friends in Yorkshire last year. They have replaced the England international with an uncapped Australian batter Matthew Short, who made headlines in BBL this year for registering 458 runs (second-highest) at an average of 35.23 and a strike rate of 144.47.

Punjab via BCCI was awaiting the latest fitness status of Bairstow from the ECB after the right-handed batter had resumed training in late February. As per the latest reports, Jonny returned to the nets in the past week and is likely to feature in Division two of the County Championship which usually starts in May. Considering this, PBKS announced his replacement in this video posted on their social media handle.

Meanwhile, on September 2nd last year, Bairstow broke his left leg and dislocated his ankle while playing golf with his friends. He slipped and suffered multiple fractures in his fibula, which required surgery wherein a plate was also inserted. Following that, Bairstow got sidelined for an indefinite time and missed all the cricketing action – including the T20 World Cup in Australia that England won, the historic away Test series in Pakistan, and the New Zealand tour that followed.

An IPL-winner with the SunRisers Hyderabad in 2016, Bairstow had a shallow 2022 season with Punjab – where he just managed 253 runs in 11 matches, averaging 23.00 with a strike rate of 144.57, including two fifties.

On the other hand, Matthew Short garnered attention from the cricket world following his breakthrough BBL season, where he starred for the Adelaide Strikers at the top of the order. His best innings in BBL 2022/23 came during an exciting chase against Hobart Hurricanes, where he scored an unbeaten hundred and helped Adelaide chase a mammoth total of 230 with seven wickets in hand.

Besides, he’s a handy off-spinner who picked 11 wickets during the tournament.

Currently, he’s playing for Victoria against Western Australia in the Shield final, where he scored 36 and 3, respectively, across both innings.

As Punjab begins its IPL 2023 campaign against Kolkata Knight Riders, it remains to be seen when will Short make his IPL debut.

IPL 2023: Punjab Kings announce uncapped Australian Matthew Short as Jonny Bairstow's replacement

IPL 2023 franchise Punjab Kings will miss the services of star English batter Jonny Bairstow for the upcoming season, as the English Cricket Board (ECB) denied him a NOC considering his recovery, which will take some more time.

IPL 2023 franchise Punjab Kings will miss the services of star English batter Jonny Bairstow for the upcoming season, as the English Cricket Board (ECB) denied him a NOC considering his recovery, which will take some more time. On the flip side, the PBKS camp got a boost with news of Liam Livingstone’s availability for the whole season. Jonny suffered a weird injury while playing golf with his friends in Yorkshire in September last year and missed all cricket action since. In October, he underwent surgery on a broken leg and dislocated ankle and is expected to be up and running in a few weeks. However, given the time he spent on the sidelines away from cricket, the ECB decided against giving him a NOC for the upcoming season of IPL. Bairstow, 33, will remain in contention for the home Ashes that starts from June 16th. ALSO READ: IND vs AUS: Australia attain number one spot in ODIs after 2-1 series win over India As reported by the Cricbuzz, Jonny will miss the whole season, whereas his fellow teammate Liam Livingstone is expected to be available. Liam suffered injuries in his knees and ankles during the Rawalpindi Test against Pakistan in December last year and spent his quota of time away from the game. The latest reports now suggest that he was part of Lancashire County Cricket Club's off-season training recently in Dubai and will arrive in India soon for IPL 2023, scheduled to begin on March 31st. Other than these two, another star English all-rounder Sam Curran, who happens to be the costliest player-ever in the history of this cash-rich league, will also be available for the complete season. While Punjab purchased Bairstow and Liam for nearly INR 18 crores combined, they splurged another INR 18.50 crores on Curran during the December auction. Punjab will open its IPL 2023 campaign against Kolkata Knight Riders on April 1st. Here’s Punjab Kings squad for IPL 2023 – Arshdeep Singh, Shikhar Dhawan, Kagiso Rabada, Jonny Bairstow, Shahrukh Khan, Harpreet Brar, Prabhsimran Singh, Jitesh Sharma, Rahul Chahar, Liam Livingstone, Raj Bawa, Rishi Dhawan, Baltej Dhanda, Nathan Ellis, Atharva Taide, Bhanuka Rajapaksa, Sam Curran, Sikandar Raza, Harpreet Bhatia, Vidwath Kaverappa, Mohit Rathe, Shivam Singh

Jonny Bairstow to miss IPL 2023 for Punjab Kings, Liam Livingstone set to return after injury spell

Punjab Kings are eagerly waiting for medical clearance from the ECB on Jonny Bairstow as the 16th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) is about to begin in almost three-week time. Bairstow is now recovering from the freak injury he suffered last year while playing golf with his friends in Yorkshire.

The English batter broke his left leg and dislocated his ankle on September 2nd, days before the start of the final Test between England and South Africa. Jonny was believed to have slipped while playing golf and had multiple fractures in his fibula in addition to suffering ligament damage.

It came as a huge blow not only for England, but also for several franchises across different leagues where he was supposed to represent them including the Punjab Kings in the IPL. Earlier, going by the timeline set by the ECB for Bairstow, he was to get fit by this time but looking at the pace at which he is progressing it doesn’t look any clear if he would be available for the whole season or not.

As per a report in the ESPNcricinfo, Punjab Kings are in constant touch with Bairstow and the ECB, keeping a regular tab on his recovery rate. As they await the final medical clearance from the England’s Cricket Board, Kings have started listing out Jonny’s possible replacements if the worst happens. Though they are yet to pen down a final name.

Meanwhile, since September last year, the right-handed batter missed England’s tours of Pakistan, New Zealand and even Bangladesh and also didn’t play the T20 World Cup that England won for the second time, equaling Windies’ record in this format. He, however, is expected to get fit in time for the extended summer including for the Ashes, which begins on June 16th in Edgbaston.

While for the Punjab Kings in the IPL last year, he didn’t fare that well with the bat scoring just 253 runs in 11 innings, averaging a mere 23, Bairstow had completely different results to his name in ten Tests played in 2022. With most centuries (six) until September before he got injured, Bairstow had 1061 runs to his name.
