The IPL 2024 auction made heads turn on Tuesday (Dec 19). The mega affair was held in Dubai, becoming the first-ever IPL auction being held outside India. Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins, Australia's famed pace duo, ended as the top two expensive buys as Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) roped in Starc for INR 24.75 crore (247.5 million) and the latter went to the Sunrisers Hyderabad for INR 20.50 crore (205 million).

Talking about the Punjab Kings (PBKS), they also added some key players to their squad. Harshal Patel was their highest buy, for INR 11.75 crore (117.5 million). However, their table made heads turn when they mistakenly bid for uncapped Indian player Shashank Singh.&nbsp;

During the accelerated part of the auction, the Punjab franchise was keen to acquire some uncapped Indian players. After getting the services of Ashutosh Sharma and Vishwanath Pratap Singh at their respective base price, they turned their focus towards Shashank and raised the paddle when no other team did. After receiving the opening bid, auctioneer Mallika Sagar followed the routine procedure and eventually&nbsp;sold the player to Punjab. However, there was a late twist as the PBKS didn't want the player and, thus, there was sheer chaos on their table.&nbsp;

"It was a wrong name? You don't want the player?" asked the auctioneer Mallika. "We are talking about Shashank Singh. But the hammer has come down. Player No. 236 and 237 both went to you."

Ness Wadia, another PBKS co-owner,&nbsp;then seemed to be informed that they mistakenly bid for Shashank. However, Mallika's decision didn't change and she replied, "I think the hammer has come down for 237 (Shashank) as well."

It is to be noted that there were two Shashank Singhs in the IPL 2024 auction. The one roped in by Punjab is a 32-year-old batting all-rounder, who has been earlier part of the Delhi Capitals (DC), Mumbai Indians (MI) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH). In IPL 2023, he was part of the Orange Army, playing as many as 10 games where he failed to make any impact. On the other hand, the other is a 19-year-old bowling all-rounder, yet to make his first-class debut. Both of them had a base price of INR 20 lakh&nbsp;(2 million).

Former India cricketer Sanjay Bangar has rejoined Punjab Kings (PBKS)&nbsp;backroom staff, this time as the head of cricket development ahead of IPL 2024. Previously, Bangar held the head coach post at Punjab Kings from 2014 to 2016. Bangar will join head coach Trevor Bayliss in the coaching department and be part of the mini-auction scheduled in Dubai on Tuesday (Dec 19).

Speaking on his appointment, Bangar said rejoining the Punjab camp in the IPL is a privilege. Besides, he admitted looking forward to new challenges, including finalising the best possible squad for the upcoming season.

"It's my privilege to be with the Punjab Kings again," Bangar said in a media release. "We have a good core of players as evidenced by the fact that we have the lowest number of players releases this year. The challenge is to give the squad the best support possible during and after the season to make the team stronger and deliver success."

Decoding PBKS' run in IPL 2023: Another season where inconsistency haunted Punjab Kings

Punjab Kings became the third team in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 to crash out after losing a thriller against the Rajasthan Royals on May 19th in their last fixture of the season. Kings had a horrible start as they lost four wickets for 50 runs in 6.3 overs after being asked to bat first.

Liam Livingstone was the fourth wicket to fall and on a rather ridiculous shot given the circumstances Kings were in. Former India cricketer Yusuf Pathan, in particular, wasn't pleased with Livingstone's dismissal and his reaction afterwards which included the latter laughing off on getting out.

In the seventh over the innings, bowled by Royals' pacer Navdeep Saini, the Englishman tried to scoop him over the fine leg on the second ball of the over but missed and the ball hit him above the left knee-roll. Livingstone, who was seen limping for a bit after being hit. Nonetheless, the batsman swung his bat wildly on the next ball and missed it completely as the timbers got shattered. <h2>What irked Yusuf Pathan?</h2>

After being dismissed, Livingstone had a smile on his face and that the reaction didn't please Pathan one bit. The former India cricketer, while commentating, said, "If were coach, captain or mentor of the Punjab Kings and you laugh after getting out that sort of shot then we'll never pick you again." Pathan's fellow commentator and former teammate Harbhajan Singh agreed to the thought.

Punjab, however, recovered well despite early wickets and posted a competitive total of 187/5, thanks to Jitesh Sharma (44 off 28), Sam Curran (not out 49 off 31) and M Shahrukh Khan (unbeaten 41 off 23).

If the three-time runners-up lose one, it will help CSK and LSG -- as stated above -- but the Bengaluru-based team will have to depend on how MI, KKR, RR, and PBKS fare in their last match. As of now, they have a healthy Net Run Rate (NRR) than MI, RR, KKR and PBKS at +0.166.

They are left with one more game, versus PBKS on Friday (May 19) in Dharamshala. If they earn a massive victory and MI, RCB and KKR lose their remaining games, they can still enter the playoffs.

Kolkata Knight Riders: The two-time winners still have an outside chance to feature in the last four. If they get the better of LSG by a handsome margin, they can move past MI and then hope for MI and RCB to&nbsp;lose&nbsp;their remaining encounters. Their journey to the playoffs is more complicated as they will still have to rely on the outcome of the PBKS-RR face-off. Following the annihilation at the hands of Lucknow Super Giants in Mohali on Friday night, Punjab Kings batting&nbsp;coach Wasim Jaffer backed his bowlers to come back stronger, saying there are no serious issues as such&nbsp;as this line-up defended a few totals in the past.&nbsp;

Batting first, Lucknow hammered 257 for five – the second-highest total in IPL history and beat hosts PBKS by 51 runs. Barring Rahul Chahar, who conceded 29 from four overs, every bowler went over 12 runs per over.

Starting with Kyle Mayers, who continued his excellent run at the top – hitting yet another fifty, other LSG batters also showed up and scored runs at will. While Ayush Badoni and Nicholas Pooran came close to scoring fifties, hitting 43 and 45, respectively, all-rounder Marcus Stoinis was the star of the night – who scored 72 off 40 balls, hitting six fours and five sixes, and also picked up Shikhar Dhawan’s wicket.

The onslaught saw several records getting broken as Lucknow walked away with a win in the end.

After the match, Jaffer, while speaking with the media, said,

"Don't think there are any serious concerns (about the bowling attack) because they had thrice defended scores in tough conditions. Be it against Mumbai or Rajasthan, even in the earlier Kolkata game. The bowling unit has always performed for us this season. Today was one of those days when everything clicked for the opposition, and we were a bit clueless. Our bowlers will come back strong," Jaffer said.&nbsp;

Shedding light on what could have been done to avoid getting hit for so many runs in the first innings, Jaffer said the bowlers could have gone for Plan B – that was to bowl slower balls keeping in mind the longer boundaries. Adding that the opponents executed the same plan, and that, it did work for them.&nbsp;

"Perhaps we could have gone to Plan B a bit more. Like using the slower balls a lot more and using the longer boundary consistently. They (LSG) did this a lot more effectively, and it worked for them. But again, most of their shots were clearing the boundary quite easily, so we have to give them credit for that," Jaffer added.

Talking about Dhawan’s decision to bowl first, which after the first innings total received some flak, Jaffer backed his side’s skipper, saying several factors led to that decision. He also mentioned how the latest trend of teams opting to chase after winning the toss had little role in making this call.

"It is a trend for IPL sides to opt for chasing after winning the toss. Dew was obviously a factor too. We had seen it during practice and that was a reason as well. But when the opposition gets to 257, it's always tough to chase. They got a fast start in the powerplay and never slowed down at any stage. You have to give them credit," Jaffer said.

It was not a good start for them as the skipper was dismissed in the first over which made the task vulnerable. Atharva Taide then took the initiative into his own hands as he turned the screws with a well-made 66 off 36. His innings consisted of 8 fours and 2 sixes but could take the hosts any closer to the win.

Although there were useful contributions by the middle-order batters, PBKS could only reach the 201-run mark. The likes of Sikandar Raza (36), Liam Livingstone 23), Sam Curran (21) and Jitesh Sharma all got starts but could help their side to the win.

Yash Thakur was the pick of the bowlers for LSG as he ended with four wickets while Naveen-ul-Haq scalped three wickets. Ravi Bishnoi and two and Marcus Stoinis were also amongst the wickets that saw PBKS get bowled out and therefore handed LSG a 56-run win.

After Mayers was dismissed in the sixth over, it was Ayush Badoni (43 off 24) and Stoinis who took charge of the innings. They both put together an 89-run stand for the third wicket where Badoni scored 3 sixes and 3 fours. Stoinis also scored 5 sixes and 6 fours in his marathon innings that took LSG over 200.

This was also the second time in the history of IPL that a team has scored 250 plus with Royal Challengers Bangalore's (RCB) total of 263 still the highest in the competition’s history.

Lucknow Super Giants will next take on Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) at home in Lucknow as they keep pace with other teams to make the playoffs as league leaders. IPL 2023: LSG down PBKS by 56 runs on home turf after milestone performance with bat

Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) star Marcus Stoinis will face a race against time to be fit for the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) clash on Monday after he injured his finger. Playing against Punjab Kings in the India Premier League (IPL) Stoinis produced a match-winning knock that saw LSG mount 257/5, the second-highest score in the IPL history. While the extent of the injury is still unknown, Stoinis will be optimistic about his chances to make the Playing Xi in the RCB clash.

"It's been better but yeah, it is what it is," Stoinis said after the game.

"We will get a scan later,” the Aussie star added.

Stoinis was at his fluent best at the PCA stadium in Mohali on Friday, April 29 after he smashed a quickfire 72 off 40 while also scalping a wicket to take home the Player of the Match award. His innings consisted of 5 sixes and 6 fours that propelled LSG to 257/5 with helpful contributions from the other players.

"We were joking about the difference between that and our surface at home, and how we can cash in and take advantage of this beautiful batting wicket.

"No, I wasn't [thinking about 250]. I don't think Ayush was either. We were just trying to build a partnership. He got off to a flyer as well and was hitting some nice shots; he's a very talented player. We were just trying to keep building on that and that was our only focus,” Stoinis said in addition.

With 16 to defend in the final over, Arshdeep Singh was the hero of the match for PBKS as he kept Tim David away from the strike. In extraordinary events, he dismissed Tilak Varma (3) and Nehal Wadhera (0) on back-to-back deliveries and broke the stump on both occasions. In the final over he only gave away two runs and guided PBKS to a famous win.

Prabhsimran and Atharva Taide then added 67 runs for the second wicket in just 4.1 overs before Tendulkar took Prabhsimran out.

By the time this report was being written, the duo had added 92 runs in just 48 balls, including scoring 56 off 14 balls at one stage. The onslaught from Curran and Bhatia also included one over from Tendulkar where the duo took 31 runs. Cam Green eventually dismissed Bhatia in the 18th over on a team score of 175. Bhatia played a brilliant knock of 41 off 28 and had hit Jofra Archer for a six as well in his innings.

The over from Green where he dismissed Bhatia, however, went for 25 runs including four sixes. The first two were hit by Sam Curran and the last two were hit by Jitesh Sharma who had replaced Bhatia. Sam Curran was eventually dismissed for 55 off 29 balls. Jitesh Sharma then played a lightning cameo of 25 off 7 as Punjab Kings scored 214/8 in 20 overs.

During his innings, Rahul also broke a couple of records. With the 30th run of his innings, the LSG skipper became the fastest player to score 4,000 IPL runs in 105 innings, leaving behind Chris Gayle who had achieved the feat in 112 innings.

Apart from Rahul and Gayle, David Warner (114 innings) and Virat Kohli (128 innings) are the ones who have completed 4,000 runs in under 130 innings.

"Targets like these, sometimes they become one-sided games. The kind of start given by Wriddhiman Saha and Shubman Gill, they opened up the match but they [PBKS] came back and bowled well in the middle overs, they did not concede boundaries for three-four overs,” the GT batter said after the contest.

Tewatia has endured a reputation sorts in recent times as a pitch-hitter while winning matches for GT late on. He has been influential for the franchise in the last two seasons where he also helped them win crucial encounters in the 2022 season. He credited PBKS bowlers for pulling their side back in the contest after Wriddhiman Saha and Shubman Gill had given the visitors a good start.

“Credit should be given to them for pulling it back. Towards the end, it was reversing and it became difficult to hit at will. But this is cricket - they came back well but we finished the game to be on the winning side," said Tewatia.

Speaking on his approach in the contest and with a handful of deliveries to go in the contest, Tewatia was full of confidence.

In reply, GT dominated the run-chase for a large part but Punjab bowlers stretched the game till the final over where Rahul Tewatia's timely hit (5 not out off 2 balls) propelled the defending champions to a six-wicket win with a ball to spare.

From GT, opener Shubman Gill top-scored with a 49-ball 67. While he continues to grow in stature with his consistency, questions still arise on his ability to finish a run-chase and strike big towards the latter stage of the innings. He reached 35 off 22 balls but slowed down considerably, with GT losing Sai Sudharshan and captain Hardik Pandya, during the fag end of the run-chase. As a result, Gill took another 18 balls to get to his fifty. Holding one end, he was expected to complete the run-chase but got dismissed in the final over, by Sam Curran, with GT still requiring six off four balls.&nbsp;

Thus, former cricketer-turned-commentator Sanjay Manjrekar has schooled Gill and asked him to take a leaf out of MS Dhoni, one of the greatest finishers of all-time.

Manjrekar, in conversation with ESPNCricinfo, said, "Champion teams are those who are mindful of their weak areas even when winning matches and tackle the same. Against KKR, there was a clear lesson for Gujarat that on the good pitch don’t play with only five bowlers."

He further opined, "From this game, the takeaway is that if a batter is set, he should try and finish the game in the 18th or 19th over. If you are taking it till the end, show a temperament like MS Dhoni and don’t get out. Shubman Gill might be asked how the game went to the 20th over. Sai Sudharsan scored at a strike rate of around 100. David Miller was also rather quiet."

Gill, too, spoke about his innings and said after the match, "It got slower with the old ball. So we needed to get off to a good start in the powerplay. We lost a bit of momentum when Hardik bhai got out. It wasn't a big score but it was important to rotate the strike and not have dot balls."

At the post-match presentation, Hardik pointed out, "To be very honest I would not appreciate for the game to go this deep. There was definitely a lot for us to learn from this game... It would have been a tough pill to swallow if the game had gone the other side. I would like to finish the game earlier, not a big fan of taking it to the last over."

From GT, opener Shubman Gill top-scored with a 49-ball 67. While he continues to grow in stature with his consistency, questions still arise on his ability to finish a run-chase and strike big towards the latter stage of the innings. At the post-match presentation, Hardik pointed out, "To be very honest I would not appreciate for the game to go this deep. There was definitely a lot for us to learn from this game... It would have been a tough pill to swallow if the game had gone the other side. I would like to finish the game earlier, not a big fan of taking it to the last over."
