Shikhar Dhawan's stocks have gone down considerably following his poor run of form and the emergence of Ishan Kishan and Shubman Gill. Hence, Dhawan was last seen in action during India-Bangladesh ODIs and hasn't played a single international match in 2023. While many have written him off for the 2023 ODI World Cup, the senior batter hasn't lost hope and remains optimistic about featuring in Team India's squad for the showpiece event, to be held later this year in India. At present, the 37-year-old is focused on IPL 2023 where he will be leading the Punjab Kings (PBKS).

Speaking on his ouster from the national side, Dhawan was quoted as saying by the news agency PTI, "They (ups and downs) are part of life. With time, with experience, you learn how to handle them with ease. I find a lot of strength in them. I did my best. If somebody is doing better than my best, that is fine. That is why that person is there and I am not there. I am very happy and content wherever I am. I make sure my process goes on strong. Of course, there is always a chance of me coming back to the side."

The left-hander further opined, "If it comes (comeback) it is good, if it doesn't come that is also good. I have achieved a lot and I am happy with that. Whatever has to come will come. I don't get desperate about it." Dhawan, who has represented India in 34 Tests, 167 ODIs, and 68 T20Is, added, "My IPL preparation is going on well. I was in Bangalore for 10 days. The focus was on fitness. With the IPL coming up, I will join the camp in Mohali on February 24 and then we regroup again later on and get going. I am in a very good state of mind and looking forward to leading from the front."

In IPL 2022, Dhawan became a part of the Punjab outfit and returned as the eighth-highest run-getter. He ended with 460 runs but had an ordinary strike rate of 122.66. This time around, Dhawan will be desperate to score more freely and make a big statement with ODI WC spot up for grabs.

Shikhar Dhawan not 'desperate' about national comeback, focused on leading Punjab Kings in IPL 2023

Punjab Kings dominated the headlines after their record-breaking deal of purchasing Sam Curran for ₹18.5 crores during a mini-auction ahead of the Indian Premier League 2023.

Punjab Kings dominated the headlines after their record-breaking deal of purchasing Sam Curran for ₹18.5 crores during a mini-auction ahead of the Indian Premier League 2023. With the current players in the squad, Punjab have a pretty decent stack of players. The bowling unit looks solid on paper in the presence of Nathan Ellis, Arshdeep Singh, Kagiso Rabada, and leg-spinner Rahul Chahar. And also the newly acquired Sam Curran. Top-class pacers are expected to emerge as the team's strong pilar, but the spin department is slightly weaker. And the same goes for the overall batting unit. The franchise has batters like Shikhar Dhawan, Jonny Bairstow, and Liam Livingstone. Sam Curran will have to carry a lot of responsibilities on his shoulders as an all-rounder. In regard to batting, the bench has no strength on paper. Punjab Kings had released their former skipper Mayank Agarwal and entered the auction with the second-largest purse of ₹32.2 crores. Although, they intended to buy Agarwal back, but lost the bidding war to Sunrisers Hyderabad. During the accelerated auction, PBKS also bought Chhattisgarh batter, Harpreet Bhatia, for ₹40 lakh. Punjab also purchased young pacer Vidwath Kaverappa, and also acquired the services of uncapped Indian cricketers Shivam Singh and Mohit Rathe. A total of three player slots are for Punjab, including one overseas slot. IPL 2023: Punjab Kings break the bank for Sam Curran: Here's how the squad look like after auction

The IPL 2023 mini-auction has started off with a bang. Among the early set of players, England's power-hitter Harry Brook -- who made heads turn during England's successful tour of Pakistan -- fetched a whopping deal after being acquired by the 2016 winners Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) for INR 13.25 crore (INR 132.5 million). On the other hand, SRH also got another big name in their kitty, getting Punjab Kings' (PBKS) former skipper Mayank Agarwal for INR 8.25 crore (INR 82.5 million).

Talking about Brook, the 23-year-old saw a big bidding war for him with SRH and Rajasthan Royals (RR) fighting hard for his services. After taking his price into double digits, the bidding war wasn't over before Hyderabad finally won the war by shelling out a huge sum.

Meanwhile, there were a lot of eyeballs on Mayank once his name was announced. The former Punjab captain's mention also led to a bidding war between SRH, Punjab, and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) before the former got him for INR 8.25 crore. It is to be noted that Hyderabad entered the IPL 2023 mini-auction with the largest purse; i.e. INR 42.25 crore (INR 422.5 million). Hence, they have started off on a smashing note by getting two big names under their belt.

It will be interesting to see if they go hard on some of the big all-rounders who can also captain them. At present, they have Bhuvneshwar Kumar as a captaincy option along with Mayank.

Punjab Kings purchased the England all-rounder Sam Curran for a whopping Rs 18.5 crores, making him the most-expensive player in the IPL history. Curran, who had represented a couple of franchises in the past including that of Punjab Kings and Chennai Super Kings, returns to Punjab for the upcoming season.

Mumbai and Bangalore started off the bidding for the English all-rounder who's base price was 2 crores. Soon after Chennai and Rajasthan Royals joined the chase. Just when it looked like either of them could bag his services, Punjab Kings entered the race. They looked determined to get Curran again despite the price crossing the previous most-expensive figure of Rs 16.5 crores for South African Chris Morris.

Mumbai Indians were also looking to get Sam Curran as a replacement for Kieron Pollard but fell second in the race as Punjab Kings broke the bank for him and got him for 18.5 crores. Later, Punjab Kings also bought Zimbabwe all-rounder Sikandar Raza for a base price of Rs 50 crores.

IPL 2023 retention: Punjab Kings retains Shahrukh Khan, releases former captain

Captaining an IPL franchise isn't an easy job by any means. Over the years, many superstar cricketers have not been able to do justice to the role of captaincy. Many captains have been replaced after a few bad seasons. Mayank Agarwal is now the latest to join the list as Punjab Kings (PBKS) have appointed senior batter Shikhar Dhawan as the franchise's captain for IPL 2023.

Dhawan's appointment was confirmed after Punjab's team meeting on Wednesday (November 02) where the newly-appointed coach Trevor Bayliss also backed the move. PBKS' official Twitter handle shared a post and wrote, "#𝐒𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐒𝐪𝐮𝐚𝐝, 𝐰𝐞 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐡𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐲 𝐭𝐨 𝐚𝐧𝐧𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐒𝐡𝐢𝐤𝐡𝐚𝐫 𝐃𝐡𝐚𝐰𝐚𝐧 𝐚𝐬 𝐜𝐚𝐩𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧 𝐨𝐟 𝐏𝐮𝐧𝐣𝐚𝐛 𝐊𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐬!"

Speaking of Mayank, the right-hander didn't have an impressive start as IPL captain in the 2022 edition. He wasn't at his best with the bat, despite batting at different positions, and managed only 196 runs from 13 matches. It was the Indian opener's worst-ever season since being given the opening job by the Punjab franchise on a full-time basis.

Under Mayank, PBKS managed only seven victories from 14 encounters and finished in the sixth position in the points table. Overall, Bayliss-Dhawan have a huge task in hand to revamp the squad and take them to the playoffs for the first time since 2014.

IPL 2023: Another change in captaincy! Shikhar Dhawan replaces Mayank Agarwal as PBKS skipper

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is set to conduct a mini player auction ahead of the start of the new season in 2023. Gujarat Titans defeated Rajasthan Royals in the final last season to lift their maiden IPL trophy in their debut campaign after successfully executing their strategies in the mega auction last year.

As per a report in the Times of India, the 2023 IPL auction is set to be held on December 16 in Bengaluru. IPL is also set to return to the traditional home and away format from next season and is likely to be staged entirely in India like last season.

Unlike the mega auction last time around where the eight old teams were asked to retain a maximum of four players, there will be no such cap on the ten teams this time. All ten teams can release and retain as many players as they like considering the budget in mind.

The overall purse of each team will be increased by Rs 5 crore (INR 50 million) from Rs 90 crore (INR 900 million) to Rs 95 crore (INR 950 million) for the 2023 mini-auction. If a team decides to release none of their players, they will be left with the amount they had saved in the mega auction last year and the additional Rs 5 crore allotted to them.

Punjab Kings currently have the largest purse among all ten teams with Rs 3.45 crore (INR 34.5 million) remaining in their kitty followed by Chennai Super Kings (Rs 29.5 million), Royal Challengers Bangalore (Rs 15.5 million), Rajasthan Royals (Rs 9.5 million), Kolkata Knight Riders (Rs 4.5 million) and Gujarat Titans (Rs 15 million).

Mumbai Indians, Sunrisers Hyderabad and Delhi Capitals were all left with only Rs 1 million after the mega auction last year while Lucknow Super Giants exhausted their entire purse.

Despite it being a mini auction, a number of big names are expected to go under the hammer ahead of the IPL 2023 season. The likes of England all-rounder Sam Curran and Cameron Green among others can headline the show with several big stars released by the franchises also expected to be in the fray.

The franchises will also have to take the final call on the injury replacements roped in by them before and during IPL 2022. The likes of Chennai Super Kings, Kolkata Knight Riders and Mumbai Indians were among six teams who roped in injury replacements.

These teams will have to decide whether they want to retain their player or the replacement player, or both while keeping the squad limit in mind. All ten teams will have to submit their final list of retained and released players to the BCCI by November 15.

Punjab Kings (PBKS) assembled a quality squad at the Indian Premier League (IPL) mega auction ahead of the 2022 season earlier this year but failed to go the distance. They roped in the likes of Shikhar Dhawan, Jonny Bairstow, Liam Livingstone and Kagiso Rabada among others to bolster their squad but ended up falling short once again as they failed to even make it to the playoffs under new captain Mayank Agarwal.

While they invested heavily in experienced campaigners, PBKS also bought some talented youngsters to strengthen their squad. One of the youngsters who impressed for the franchise in the recently-concluded IPL 2022 was Jitesh Sharma. The wicket-keeper batter showcased his explosive batting prowess in the lower-middle order and played some good finishing cameos for the team.

He was one of the regular features in the playing XI after making his debut for Punjab Kings and finished the season with 234 runs from 12 matches for his team striking at an impressive 163.64. Impressed with his batting exploits, former India batter Virender Sehwag had said Sharma deserved a spot in India's T20 World Cup 2022 squad as a backup keeper.

However, it's not just Sehwag who has backed the youngster to do well in the future. Sharma revealed his PBKS teammate Kagiso Rabada told him that he will play for India one day. The South African pacer even requested Sharma not to smash him when they come up against each other in international cricket.

"After the last match, Kagiso Rabada called me up, asked me to sit beside him and said 'do you think you can play for India?'. I said 'KG, I don't think about the future. I try to focus on every match, taking it one match at a time and concentrate on every single day.' 'Don't smash me when you play for India': Punjab Kings star reveals Kagiso Rabada's bold prediction for him

Punjab Kings ended their campaign on a winning note, crushing an already demoralised Sunrisers Hyderabad by five wickets in an inconsequential final IPL league match here on Sunday.

Batting first, Sunrisers Hyderabad managed only 157 for 8 on a good batting track.

But it was never going to be enough as Liam Livingstone made mincemeat of a hapless SRH attack, scoring 49 not out off 22 balls, and also hitting the coveted 1000th six of the tournament.

Shikhar Dhawan (39 off 32 balls) and Jitesh Sharma (19 off 7 balls) also contributed handsomely to the team's cause as the chase was completed in just 15.1 overs.

Punjab Kings, who haven't made the play-offs since their final appearance in 2014, finished sixth while the Sunrisers ended their high-spending IPL on eighth in the 10-team competition.

For Livingstone, it was all about smashing big sixes once again as he hit five in all, while Dhawan helped himself to two fours and two sixes.

It was Jonny Bairstow (23 off 15 balls), who straightaway attacked Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Washington Sundar, with a flurry of boundaries to set the tempo.

It helped Dhawan to play his accumulating game as Punjab maintained their philosophy of all out attack even as Sunrisers dropped some sitters on the field.

Worst was Washington Sundar's blooper when Livingstine tried to hit Jagadeesha Suchit against the turn and offered a dolly at point.

There were too many on-field bungles with Roamrio Shepherd's 15th over going for 23 runs.

Earlier, Punjab Kings bowlers showed a lot of discipline, restricting SRH to 157 for 8 in 20 overs.

Arshdeep Singh (0/25 in 4 overs) celebrated his maiden India call-up with another parsimonious spell but it was his state team colleague Harpreet Brar (3/26 in 4 overs), who was the pick of the bowlers with wickets of Priyam Garg, Rahul Tripathi and Aiden Markram.

With four qualifiers already decided on Saturday, there was little more than academic interest left in the game and the 'Orange Army' in fact looked jaded and more like going through the motions while batting before sprucing up their scores in the final few overs.

SRH's best batter of the season, Abhishek Sharma (43 off 32 balls) once again got a start but should have converted it into a big one which didn't happen.

A solemn looking Tripathi (20) did cross a personal milestone of 400 runs for the season but disappointment of not making it to the national team was writ large in his body language as he failed to connect the big hits.

Brar didn't do anything extraordinary and kept it mostly on the stumps, stifling the opposition batters for runs.

It was left to Romario Shepherd (26 not out off 15 balls) and Washington Sundar (25 off 19 balls) to take the Sunrisers past the 150-run mark, as both of them used the long handle to good effect in their 58-run sixth-wicket partnership off only 4.5 overs.

In fact, 50-plus runs came in the last four overs as Nathan Ellis (3/40 in 4 overs) erred in length despite a couple of back-to-back wickets that he got in the bargain.

Ellis did bowl a good hat-trick delivery which Bhuvneshwar Kumar averted only to get run-out of the very next delivery.

IPL 2022: Punjab Kings beat Sunrisers Hyderabad by five wickets to finish sixth

Mayank Agarwal-led Punjab Kings (PBKS) ended their run in IPL 2022 with a five-wicket win over Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), who finished in the eighth position. As Punjab have managed to reach the playoffs only on two occasions since the inaugural season, they will be hugely disappointed as Mayank & Co. looked a strong unit on paper but never gained consistency throughout the season.

Despite their failure to enter the playoffs, Punjab still have quite a few positives in the form of performances from Arshdeep Singh, Jitesh Sharma, Liam Livingstone, etc. Due to his economical returns despite bowling the tough overs, Arshdeep reaped rewards and was named in India's 18-man squad for the upcoming T20Is versus South Africa, to kick off on June 09.

Following Arshdeep's inclusion, former Punjab and Team India opener Virender Sehwag lauded the pacer and compared him to former Indian speedsters Zaheer Khan and Ashish Nehra. "Arshdeep has impressed me because he bowls two of the last three overs for Punjab Kings. He may not have that many wickets, but his economy rate is brilliant. He is the bowler who bowls one over with the new ball and two in the slog overs. I have only seen Zaheer Khan and Ashish Nehra do that during my time. Now, its Arshdeep and Bumrah, and Bhuvneshwar as well. It is a very difficult job to bowl in the slog overs,” Sehwag said on Cricbuzz.

Talking about Arshdeep's numbers in IPL 15, he ended with 10 scalps from 14 games at a splendid economy rate of 7.70. Despite his consistency, Punjab failed to live upto expectations and have bowed out of the 15th season. Arshdeep, meanwhile, will now shift his focus to delivering for Team India in the SA T20Is at home.

Punjab Kings vs Sunrisers Hyderabad, IPL 2022: Head-to-head, stats, trivia and predicted XIs

Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) will take on Punjab Kings (PBKS) in their final league game of the season in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 on Sunday (May 22). It will be a dead rubber between the two sides as both the teams have already been knocked out of the race for the playoffs.

Both SRH and Punjab Kings have so far managed six wins each in 13 games so far and would be ruing their mistakes this season as just one more win could have put them in contention for a spot in the top four with 16 points. However, the winner of tonight's encounter at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai will finish outside the top four.

While Punjab Kings have failed to win two matches on the trot so far this season, SRH were once on an unbeaten streak of as many as five matches before their campaign went downhill. The Kane Williamson-led side lost their first two games in a row at the start of their campaign before winning the next five on the trot.

However, SRH endured a five-match losing streak as they failed to make it to the playoffs despite being favourites to finish in the top four once. SRH will now hope to finish their disappointing season on a high with a win against Punjab Kings at the Wankhede on Sunday.

The Orange Army will be without skipper Kane Williamson for their final game of the season as the Kiwi batter flew back home after the birth of his child. In his absence, veteran pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar is expected to lead SRH against Mayank Agarwal-led Punjab Kings.

While the encounter is all set to be a dead rubber, Punjab Kings will also be hoping to end the season on a high with a win in their bag in their final game. While Agarwal has been lauded by many for his captaincy, he has not been able to be among the runs for Punjab Kings and will be hoping to end the season with a big knock on Sunday.

SRH vs PBKS, IPL 2022 today match prediction: Who will win Sunrisers Hyderabad vs Punjab Kings clash?

Spinners Axar Patel and Kuldeep Yadav were inspirational in the middle overs even as Shardul Thakur complemented the duo with career-best IPL figures as Delhi Capitals inched closer towards play-off qualifications beating Punjab Kings by 17 runs in an IPL match on Monday.

Invited to bat, DC posted 159 for 7 courtesy Mitchell Marsh's 48-ball 63 and then restricted Punjab to 142 for 9. Thakur (4/36), Axar (2/14) and Kuldeep (2/14) shared eight wickets among them while Anrich Nortje got the important wicket of Jonny Bairstow.

It is between overs 6-14 where Delhi won the game as Kuldeep and Axar cumulatively gave away only 28 runs in seven overs with four wickets between them.

With this win, DC jumped a place to fourth with 14 points from 13 matches. Royal Challengers Bangalore (14 from 13 matches) have same points as DC but they were pushed down to fifth spot as they have -0.323 NRR compared +0.255 of Delhi.

Punjab, who remained at the seventh spot with 12 points from 13 matches, are virtually out of the reckoning for a play-offs berth as they also have a -0.043 net run rate.

Chasing 160 for a win, Punjab suffered a batting collapse after a good start. Jitesh Sharma (44 of 34 balls) and Rahul Chahar (25 not out off 24 balls) made a late fightback with a 41-run stand -- highest in their run chase -- for the eighth wicket but that proved to be too little too late.

Punjab began on a promising note with in-form Jonny Bairstow punishing Khaleel Ahmed and Nortje with fours and sixes to take his side to 27 for no loss at the end of third over.

But from there the collapse began as five Punjab batsmen gone back to the hut one after the other as they were reduced to for 5 at the end of the eighth over.

Bairstow (28 off 15 balls) fell to Nortje in the fourth over before a struggling Shrdul Thakur took two wickets -- that of Bhanuka Rajapaksa (4) and Shikhar Dhawan (19) -- in three balls in the sixth over to change the complexion of the game.

Punjab were 54 for 3 at the end of powerplay and three balls later Axar Patel claimed his 100th IPL wicket with a special one -- that of Punjab captain Mayank Agarwal's scalp. Mayank (0), who has been struggling this season, went for a cut to an arm ball but it went through the gap between bat and pad to crash into the middle stump.

There was no respite for Punjab as Liam Livingstone was out in the eighth over, stumped by Rishabh Pant for Kuldeep's first wicket. Kuldeep returned for his second over to dismiss Harpreet Bar (1) with him wrong-un beating the batter before going through the gate to crash into the stumps.

It was all over for Punjab by then as they were reduced to 68 for 6 at the halfway mark. Punjab needed 39 off the final three overs but David Warner pulled off a fine catch at long-off to dismiss Jitesh ending the game in favour of DC.

Earlier, Arshdeep Singh and Livingstone snared three wickets each as Punjab restricted Delhi to 159 for 7.
Marsh first added 51 runs with Sarfaraz Khan (32) and then another 47 runs with Lalit Yadav (24), after DC lost opener David Warner (0) off the first ball of the innings.

DC scored at a brisk pace after being asked to bat but they suffered a middle-order collapse, losing three quick wickets. It was Australian Marsh, who anchored the DC innings. He completed his fifty with a boundary in the 17th over. He hit four fours and three sixes but ran out of partners.

The move to open the bowling with Livingstone (3/27) worked as he removed Warner, who gave a sitter to Rahul Chahar at the backward point. Marsh and Sarfaraz then tried to steady the ship. Marsh hammered back-to-back sixes off pacer Kagiso Rabada (1/24), including one lofted shot as Delhi added 15 runs in the second over.

Sarfaraz was brutal on left-arm orthodox bowler Harpreet Brar (0/29), hammering him for a maximum, a slog sweep and two successive boundaries, as Delhi fetched 15 runs in the third over.

Sarfaraz hammered five boundaries and a six as Delhi raced to the 50-run mark in the fifth over. But Sarfaraz's cameo ended after he mistimed a lofted shot off Arshdeep Singh (3/37) with Chahar taking a running catch.

Then Marsh and Lalit mixed caution and aggression. At 86/2 after 10 overs, the stage was set for a big score.
But Punjab pegged back DC, by grabbing three quick wickets and reducing the opposition to 112/5.

First, Arshdeep used his slow bouncer to remove Lalit and then Livingstone sent back Rishabh Pant (7), who was stumped by Jitesh Sharma. Livingstone had his third wicket, when he removed Rovman Powell (2). Wickets kept tumbling for Delhi even as Punjab bowlers conceded 43 runs in the last five overs.

IPL 2022: Marsh, Shardul shine as Delhi Capitals beat Punjab Kings by 17 runs to enter top four

IPL 2022 edition has seen many young and uncapped players make a mark. Among the Indian players, the likes of Umran Malik, Mohsin Khan, Arshdeep Singh, Abhishek Sharma, Tilak Verma and many others have made a mark for their respective franchises.

During Punjab Kings (PBKS) and Delhi Capitals (DC) encounter, which was match no. 64 in IPL 15, Arshdeep was the lone shining aspect for Punjab in their 17-run loss at the hands of Rishabh Pant & Co. While he was a bit expensive, the 23-year-old still ended with 4-0-37-3, removing the likes of Lalit Yadav, Sarfaraz Ahmed and Shardul Thakur.

In his fourth IPL season, Arshdeep might not have a lot of wickets to show, he still has 10 scalps in 13 games at an economy rate of 7.82.

Thus, former Indian pacer Irfan Pathan hailed Arshdeep for keeping some big hitters like MS Dhoni, Hardik Pandya, etc. quiet during the end overs and leading the bowling attack despite Kagiso Rabada's presence.

The race for the playoffs is heating up in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 as seven teams remain in the fray to clinch the remaining three spots in the top four. Gujarat Titans (GT) were the first and the only team so far to have qualified for the playoffs this season as they continue to enjoy a stellar season under captain Hardik Pandya.

Lucknow Super Giants had twin chances to become the second team to make it to the playoff this season but back-to-back losses for KL Rahul & Co. in their last two games mean they are still stuck at the third spot on the points table with just one game in hand.

While Gujarat Titans have already qualified for the playoffs, Rajasthan Royals (RR) and LSG are all but certain to get through as they have 16 points each with one game to go and a healthy positive net run rate. With three spots done and dusted, there will be a battle between as many as five teams for the final fourth spot in the playoffs.

Here is a look at what the five teams need to do to make it to the IPL 2022 playoffs:

Delhi Capitals:

Delhi Capitals are among the favourites to qualify for the playoffs as Rishabh Pant & Co. have their fate in their own hands. With a net run rate of +0.255, DC have 14 points in 13 matches and a game in hand. If they manage to win their final game against Mumbai Indians, they are certain to qualify. Even a loss will keep them in contention with 14 points.

Royal Challengers Bangalore:

Faf du Plessis-led Royal Challengers Bangalore once looked set to enter the playoffs comfortably as they were enjoying a tremendous run in the competition. However, their defeat against Punjab Kings in their last game have put them in a tricky situation. RCB will play their last game against Gujarat Titans and only a win can see them make it to the playoffs as they have a negative net run rate.

Kolkata Knight Riders:

Shreyas Iyer & Co. also have an outside chance of qualifying with 12 points from 13 matches so far. KKR will need a favour from other teams and a big win against Lucknow Super Giants in their final game to make it to top four. KKR have a very slim chance of finishing in the top four.

Punjab Kings:

Punjab Kings' chances are even slimmer as they have a negative net run rate of -0.043 despite having the same number of points as KKR - 12. Only a big win in their final game against Sunrisers Hyderabad and some other results going in their favour will ensure their progression in the playoffs.

Sunrisers Hyderabad:

Sunrisers Hyderabad too have an outside chance of making it to the playoffs with 10 points in 12 matches so far this season. They are in a must-win situation in their last two games and a loss against Mumbai Indians on Tuesday (May 17) will confirm their elimination from the tournament.

However, the duo's failures in the last two games resulted in crushing defeats for Samson & Co., who will be hoping others can also contribute and propel them to a much-needed victory on Saturday. On the other hand, Punjab Kings have been far from consistent this season. With five wins and as mah defeats in their first ten matches, they are well in contention to qualify for the playoffs. However, Mayank Agarwal & Co. are yet to win two matches on the trot this season and will be looking to do that against RR on Saturday. Pacer Kagiso Rabada snared four wickets as Punjab Kings restricted formidable Gujarat Titans to a below-par 143 for eight after Hardik Pandya opted to bat first.Punjab, who made a mess of what should have been a straightforward chase in their last game, learned from their mistakes to pace the innings much better and overcome the target in 16 overs.

Dhawan (62 not out off 53 balls) scored his third half-century of the season and got good support from Sri Lankan Bhanuka Rajapaksa (40 off 28), who entertained with five fours and a six. As one of the senior batters in the team, Dhawan took the responsibility of finishing the game for his team and he did that with elan.

Skipper Mayank Agarwal dropped himself down the order to accommodate Jonny Bairstow (1) at the top of the order but the move did not work. However, the 87-run stand between the left-handers, Dhawan and Rajapaksa, ensured Punjab got home comfortably.

Liam Livingstone (30 not out off 10) displayed some brutal hitting towards the end of the chase and smashed premier India pacer Mohammad Shami for four sixes including a monstrous 117m hit over deep square leg. The 16th over going for 30 runs also gave a big boost to PBKS' net run rate.

It was a much-needed win for Punjab, who have struggled for consistency this season with five wins and as many losses. For Gujarat, who are set to make the play-offs, it was a timely wake-up call to fix their batting issues, especially at the top of the order. They have had somebody or the other to bail them out of tough situations but it was not the case on Tuesday.

Earlier, Sai Sudharsan's unbeaten 65 off 50 balls was the saving grace in Gujarat's innings as Punjab bowlers conceded only 11 fours and two sixes. Sudarsan managed to hit five boundaries and a six but ran out of partners as Gujarat skipper Hardik Pandya's decision to elect to bat backfired.

They lost openers Shubman Gill (9) and Wriddhiman Saha (21) cheaply. Gill, who had struck two boundaries, was dismissed courtesy a direct hit from Rishi Dhawan from cover, in the third over.

In the next over Saha, who started aggressively, gave a sitter to rival captain Mayank Agarwal at mid-off, giving Rabada (4/33) his first wicket. Saha, who had hit three boundaries and a six, was undone by the extra bounce, as he tried to play a lofted shot, but mistimed it and paid the price.

Gujarat further slipped to 44/3 as pacer Rishi Dhawan (1/26) removed Hardik (1) early. Hardik tried to drive an outside the off length ball, but ended it nicking to wicket-keeper Jitesh Sharma leaving his team in all sorts of trouble.

Then Sudharsan and David Miller (11) tried to rally the innings but managed to add only 23 runs in 30 balls. It became 67/4 after Liam Livingstone (1/15) dismissed Miller, who miscued a lofted drive to be caught by Rabada at long-off.

Sudharshan tried to change gears from the 11th over, when he pulled Livingstone for his first boundary, but was unable to free his arms frequently.

Rabada further pegged back Gujarat by removing Rahul Tewatia (11) and Rashid Khan (0) in successive deliveries in the 17th over, with GT reeling at 112/6. Rabada capped off a memorable spell by dismissing Lockie Ferguson (5).
For Punjab, Sandeep Sharma (0/17), Arshdeep Singh (1/35), Rahul Chahar (0/11) and Livingstone also played their parts to perfection.

Gujarat Titans vs Punjab Kings, IPL 2022: Head-to-head, stats, trivia and predicted playing XIs

Match 48 of the IPL 2022 edition will see the Hardik Pandya-led Gujarat Titans (GT) lock horns with Mayank Agarwal's Punjab Kings (PBKS) at the Dr. DY Patil Stadium, Mumbai on Tuesday evening (May 03). While one team Gujarat has everything going right for them this season, Punjab have remained rusty and inconsistent. Hence, they have to pull up their socks in order to stay alive in the playoffs race.

Earlier, Punjab and Gujarat were involved in a humdinger of a clash when they had met in match 16 on April 8, at the Brabourne Stadium, Mumbai. Being asked to bat first, Mayank-led PBKS rode on Liam Livingstone's blistering 27-ball 64 to post 189-9. In reply, Hardik & Co. were in the run-chase courtesy of Shubman Gill's 96 but lost him and skipper Hardik as Punjab kept fighting hard to stay in the contest. Nonetheless, with 13 needed off 3 balls, Gujarat still won the game with Rahul Tewatia's two sixes in a row (and a wide-ball).

For Gujarat, they are defying odds and finding new heroes and unearthing new ways to emerge on top in every game. With one more win, they are very much set to qualify for the playoffs and, hence, will test the erratic Punjab line-up, who is still struggling to finalise a settled XI and haven't won two games on the trot so far.

Match prediction for Gujarat vs Punjab: It is expected to be a humid day. Expect toss and dew to play a part once again. Batting second team likely to walk away with a win? Gujarat are surely favourites and expected to romp past Punjab.

GT vs PBKS, IPL 2022 prediction today: Who will win Gujarat Titans vs Punjab Kings match?

Match 42 of the IPL 2022 edition saw two good friends KL Rahul and Mayank Agarwal lock horns with each other as the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) faced the rusty and inconsistent Punjab Kings (PBKS) at the MCA Stadium, Pune on Friday evening (April 29).

Opting to bowl first, Mayank-led PBKS got rid of in-form skipper Rahul (6). From thereon, Quinton de Kock and Deepak Hooda, promoted at No. 3, steadied the ship and the runs started coming after a brief period. Against the run of play, Sandeep Sharma dismissed De Kock and Lucknow's slide started after his departure. From 104-2, they were soon reduced to 111-6. Their middle-order batters, such as Marcus Stoinis, Krunal Pandya and Ayush Badoni, looked in a hurry as they fell cheaply with Kagiso Rabada doing the bulk of the damage.

Just when one thought that Lucknow will struggle to get past the 150-run mark, cameos from pacers Dushmantha Chameera and Mohsin Khan propelled LSG to 153-8. Rabada and Rahul Chahar were the pick of the bowlers but Punjab would have felt they could've restricted Lucknow to somewhere close to 140.

In reply, Punjab were off to a good start courtesy of captain Mayank (17-ball 25) before he and Shikhar Dhawan fell cheaply. Chameera did the early damage and was complemented by Ravi Bishnoi before Mohsin Khan's breakthroughs pushed Punjab out of the contest. Liam Livingstone and Jonny Bairstow challenged for a bit but Rahul's proactive captaincy and good fielding from Lucknow took them home by 20 runs with PBKS managing only 133-8 (despite Rishi Dhawan's late strikes).

The newcomers now have 12 points and take the third spot in the points table.

At the post-match presentation, a jubiliant Rahul said, "I was disappointed and fuming at the end of the first innings. Stupid cricket with the bat. It does happen but we did talk about it at the time-out. We did talk that we can defend 160 as this wasn't a great pitch. The crucial runs at the back end and then the execution with the ball helped us win. We need to get better with the bat. Half-time, when Quinny and Deepak were batting they paced it really really well to get to 60 in 9 overs on a tricky wicket. Had we batted smartly, we could have gotten to 180-190. The way we responded with the ball was phenomenal. Krunal has been brilliant throughout the tournament. In this season he has really worked on his bowling. Bowling economically is important but he has been giving us two three wickets in the middle overs. Bishnoi is an aggressive bowler. We are fine with him going for a few fours and sixes looking to go for wickets. I think we just need to be smarter in reading the game. If we could have not played too many shots we could have done better. We have been good on the field and good with the ball. Just need to keep repeating the good things."
