The left-handed sensation seemed like a potential future captain at his Indian Premier League side Delhi Capitals, but a poor run of form forced him to sit out of the team while his off-field issues also had a negative impact. Shaw was not considered for the West Indies tour and was part of the Duleep Trophy squad of West Zone. While things did not go any better, he will now have the opportunity to impress the selectors as West Zone made it to the final against South Zone.

<h2>Shaw in Duleep Trophy</h2>

Shaw scored 26 and 25 in two innings of the semifinal bout against Central Zone and looked far from his best. However, he has put the poor run of form behind him and looks forward to regaining his spot in the national team. He last represented India in July 2021, when Shikhar Dhawan-led India faced Sri Lanka. He was since drafted in the India squad for the New Zealand T20I series, but did not get any playing time.

Shaw will next take the field in the final of the Duleep Trophy, which kickstarts on Wednesday, July 12 against the Central Zone.

Duleep Trophy: Prithvi Shaw reflects on poor run after fruitful campaign, 'you have to keep moving forward'

India batsman Prithvi Shaw is heading to England. The right-hand opening batsman, who had a horrid time in the recently-concluded Indian Premier League (IPL), has signed with Northamptonshire. He will be playing the rest of the English county season and the Royal London One-Day Cup as well. The latter starts in August.

Before that, however, Shaw is expected to take part in India's domestic ODI Duleep Trophy game. Shaw, who plays for West Zone, will be a part of the team against Central Zone before flying out to England.

A source close to the cricketer confirmed the developments to news agency PTI.

“Yes, Prithvi will be leaving once he finishes his Duleep Trophy assignment for West Zone. He is likely to play the July 19-22 game against Somerset if all goes well,” the source said to PTI.

Playing as an impact player, Shaw was dismissed on five on the third ball of the second over of the Delhi Capitals by Tushar Deshpande. Ahead of DC’s sixth match against Kolkata Knight Riders on Thursday, Moody wants DC to drop Prithvi Shaw and replace him with Mitchell Marsh at the top of the order.

Moody feels IPL 2023 is not Shaw’s year and that he should get benched for good, and the team must look into other options straightaway. The young right-handed batter scored only 34 runs in five games, including two ducks, and hasn’t looked confident either.

As the Delhi side is reeling at the tenth spot in the points table with five losses in as many games, Moody said the time for extended runs for a few players is over and the team must take some harsh calls.

"It can just be, 'Oh, we'll give him a couple more games and see what happens'. Those couple of games go, and your chances as a franchise have gone. That's why you've got to make that cold, hard decision at that point. This is a crunch time," he added.

Giving his suggestion to this solution, Moody said Delhi must consider looking at Mitchell Marsh as the option, as he has done it in the past – most recently against India in Vizag, where he scored 66 off 36 balls, hitting six fours and six sixes.

"He's (Marsh) done that before recently, and he's done it successfully. He's naturally an enforcer, so that would complement [David] Warner, it would help him as well," Moody said. "You've got a left-right combination, you've got a 6ft4in and a 5ft8in batter, which is difficult to bowl to."

Besides, he also wants the man-in-form, Axar Patel to bat higher up the order at number five.

Notably, Prithvi Shaw had ran himself out on the fourth ball of Delhi innings as they chased 173 against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB).

These early dismissals have added extra pressure on DC skipper and Shaw's opening partner David Warner who himself is under scrutiny for slow strike rate despite scoring 228 runs in five matches.&nbsp;

Delhi Capitals' opening batsman Prithvi Shaw failed yet again in DC's second IPL match vs Gujarat Titans (GT) as his team lost the home game by six wickets. Batting first on a lively pitch, Shaw tried to take on GT's Mohammed Shami but could only guide a short ball towards mid-on with seven to his name.

Shaw's failure did not go well with former India opener Virender Sehwag who said that Shaw has gotten out the same way many times now and should learn from his mistakes.

“He has been dismissed playing those kinds of shots so many times…but he should also learn from his mistakes, right? Look at Shubman Gill, who played U-19 cricket with him and is now playing Test, ODIs and T20Is for India, but Shaw is still struggling in IPL. He has to make the most of this IPL platform and score runs. Ruturaj Gaikwad scored 600 odd runs in an IPL season. Shubman Gill also scored big runs. So even Shaw has to be consistent with his IPL scores,” said Sehwag.

Another former India opener, Sunil Gavaskar, also criticised Shaw's technique on air during the match and said, "Once again that backfoot has done him in, it doesn’t move at all.”

Notably, DC's Director of Cricket Sourav Ganguly had before that start of the season that he'll soon be playing for India.

"I think Prithvi Shaw is ready to play for India. Whether he gets an opportunity will depend on slots. I am sure Rohit Sharma and selectors have a close eye on him. He is a good player and ready,” Ganguly had told Times of India before the start of IPL 2023.

Shaw, who scored 12 runs in DC's opening game against LSG, was also predicted to have a breakout 2023 season by DC coach Ricky Ponting.

"He’s in a better physical shape than I’ve ever seen him before. I spoke to him the other day about his attitude, the way he’s working, and how things are going. I honestly feel that this is going to be his biggest season in the IPL. He just has that different look in his eye this year. You can see, he’s hungrier than ever," Ponting had said.

It'll be interesting to see how Shaw plays this season now after a couple of failures but complete backing by the team management. DC next play against Rajasthan Royals on April 8 in Guwahati.

IPL 2023: Sourav Ganguly makes BOLD prediction about Prithvi Shaw's chances to play for India

Virender Sehwag had a stellar run at the international level. The former Team India opener ended his illustrious career with&nbsp;8,586, 8,273 and 394 runs in Tests, ODIs and T20Is respectively. He was known for his fearless style of batting. Since his retirement, Indian cricket have had fearless batters such as Rohit Sharma and Harmanpreet Kaur but many a times&nbsp;former cricketers come&nbsp;up with the cliched 'He reminds me of Sehwag' phrase when youngsters play a blazing knock.

However, Sehwag feels there is no player in the Indian team who bats like him but named Rishabh Pant as the one who comes closest to his batting approach. Sehwag also urged Pant to up his game so that he scores daddy hundreds like him.

"I don't think so there is any player in the Indian team who bats like me. The two players who came to my mind who have come close to it are Prithvi Shaw and Rishabh Pant. I think Rishabh Pant is a little bit close to what I used to bat like in Test cricket but he is satisfied with 90-100 but I used to score 200, 250 and 300 and then be content. If he took his game to that level then I think he can entertain the fans even more," Sehwag said during News18 India Chaupal.

"I used to play tennis ball cricket where my mindset was to hit more runs through boundaries. I played with the same template in international cricket and used to calculate how many boundaries I need to score a century. If I am on 90 and to reach 100 if I take 10 balls then the opposition has 10 balls to get me out, which is why I used to go for boundaries and gave them only two balls to stop me reaching the triple figure-mark. The risk percentage rate dropped from 100 to 200," mentioned the former India opener.

In the recently-concluded Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2022/23, he ended as the third-highest run-getter (264 runs with three half-centuries) and claimed three wickets overall. He has been part of the DC camp since IPL 2019 and is now an integral part of their line-up, performing in all departments. Axar has 1,135 runs and 101 scalps overall.

Shaw, on the other hand, is also with the Delhi unit since his debut season, in 2018, and has the experience of leading Mumbai in the domestic circuit. He also led the India U-19 team to the World Cup title in 2018. The swashbuckling opener has amassed&nbsp;1,588 runs in 63 games.

India backed Gill and Ishan Kishan, who once again fell flat in the series finale. After the easy win over the Kiwis in the Ahmedabad T20I, skipper Hardik Pandya was presented with the trophy by BCCI President Roger Binny and Secretary Jay Shah. Hardik quickly handed the trophy to benched Shaw, grabbing eyeballs for the out-of-favour player.&nbsp;

Shaw would be disappointed to not get a game under his belt during the NZ series. He will aim for a memorable run in IPL 2023 and make a strong statement to get a longer rope in the T20I setup with the World Cup next year in West Indies and the USA.

At the post-match presentation, a jubilant Hardik reflected on the series win and said, "I don't mind winning (man of the series award), but there were so performances here that were exceptional. This Man of the Series and trophy goes out to the whole support staff, I'm happy for all of them. (On doing things out of the box) Not to be honest, I always play the game like this. I try to read what is required, not have preconceived ideas. In my captaincy, I look to keep it simple and back my gut. I have a simple rule -&nbsp;if I go down, I will go down on my terms.&nbsp;We've spoken about taking challenges. When we played the IPL final, we felt the second innings was more spicy but on this surface today I wanted to make it a normal game because it was a decider. Hence, we batted first. Hopefully, we can continue performing like this."

Ahead of the start of the three-match T20I series against New Zealand, newly-appointed India’s T20I captain Hardik Pandya said the returning Prithvi Shaw will have to wait for his chance as the man-in-form Shubman Gill will be preferred over him for the Ranchi game, scheduled to begin on Friday, January 27th. Gill became the youngest batter to register a double hundred against the Kiwis in the first ODI in Hyderabad, hitting 208, while in the final One-Dayer in Indore, he scored yet another century – ending the three-match series with 360 runs at an average of 180.

"Prithvi Shaw will have to wait for his opportunity as Shubman Gill has done very well and was already part of the T20 team," Hardik Pandya said in the presser in Ranchi.

Gill, who got preferred over Ishan Kishan before the start of this series at a time when Kishan had notched up the fastest double hundred in ODIs against Bangladesh in his last game, will again be played ahead of Shaw. Prithvi, who kept pressing his case for a place in the team owing to remarkable performances in the domestic cricket, finally got picked for New Zealand T20Is. He, however, falls second in the pecking order when it’s compared to Gill in white-ball cricket.

Meanwhile, both Shaw and Gill were part of India’s Under-19 World Cup squad that won the title in 2018 against Australia in the finals. Though Shaw got his chance first as he scored a debut Test hundred against the Windies, Gill took some time before getting roped into the Indian team. His main contribution, however, came during the 2020/21 Border-Gavaskar series in Australia where he scored 259 runs in three Tests opening against the best pace attack in the world.

It was on that tour only when Shaw failed to deliver across two Tests and was later dropped. The team persisted with Gill across formats after that and it paid dividends as Gill kept scoring runs at consistent rate against top teams in different conditions. In an interview with Sportstar after end of Day 1's play, Shaw spoke at length about the challenges of managing expectations and handling criticism. He said, "I have realised that whenever you score runs, you are on top of the world. But when you don't score then people will come after you. Expectations kaafi rehte hai [there are quite a lot of expectations] when you score regularly, so when you suddenly get out early in three or four innings, people start thinking 'yaar, yeh hai woh hai [people start questioning you].' Only you know whether you are following the process, or whether you are being disciplined more than before, are you sleeping on time, eating well before a game. All those things matter. I am just trying to follow those things and I am trying to spend time alone as much as possible. I cut out the outside noise - be it on social media or in other platforms."

Shaw further asserted, "I try to avoid those things or at times, just ask my manager to handle social-media activities. I have brand commitments, and that's why it is not possible to stay away from social media, and thus, you eventually end up seeing what's being written or spoken about. But I am still trying to cut out the noise as much as possible. People are talking about you and then will continue doing the same even after 10 years, so you should not think too much about it, because if you start reading too much between the lines, you will be affecting yourself."

With some a record-breaking knock, Shaw has raised his stocks and will certainly be under the radar of the BCCI selectors when they meet to announce the white-ball squads for the upcoming home series versus New Zealand. Despite his heroics in the domestic circuit, he has been overlooked for national duties. Shaw has only played four Tests, six ODIs and a solitary T20I since his international debut in late 2018.

Madhya Pradesh enjoyed a dream run in the tournament under head coach Chandrakant Pandit, who has now won the Ranji Trophy with the likes of Mumbai, Vidarbha and Madhya Pradesh. The Aditya Shrivastava-led side was up against a dominant Mumbai team in the final but completely outplayed the domestic giants to win the elusive title.

Sarfaraz Khan continued his dream run with the bat for Mumbai in their first innings as he slammed a brilliant 134 -run-knock to help the Prithvi Shaw-led side post 374 runs on the board. However, Madhya Pradesh responded in style with as many as three batters notching up centuries apiece.

Despite an opening stand of 87 between Prithvi Shaw (47, 79 balls) and Yashasvi Jaiswal (78, 163 balls), Mumbai failed to drive home the advantage on a pitch that wasn't conducive for strokeplay.

A 400-plus first-innings total will now depend on the season's highest run-getter Sarfaraz Khan (40 batting, 125 balls), who is looking good for another big knock with the dependable Shams Mulani (12 batting, 43 balls) giving him company.

While left-arm spinner Kumar Kartikeya was the tireless operator from one end, having sent down 31 overs for figures of 1 for 91, seamer Gaurav Yadav (23-5-68-0) was distinctly unlucky and the wickets column don't reflect the relentless pressure that he put on Mumbai batters, especially skipper Shaw.

In fact, it was the pressure applied by Yadav which helped nippy seamer Anubhav Agarwal (19-3-56-2) and tall off-spinner Saransh Jain (17-2-31-2) to share the bulk of the spoils, with some intelligent execution of plans.

Mumbai did enjoy the advantage during the first hour after Shaw opted to bat and, along with Jaiswal, took on the MP attack. The strategy to start with Kartikeya's slow left-arm orthodox seemed to have backfired when Jaiswal took him on and lofted him over long-on for a six.

Shaw followed suit and hit Kartikeya over long-off for a six as they added 87 for the first wicket. But while Jaiswal, with his drives and upper cuts, looked to continue from where he left in the semi-final, Shaw, despite his seven fours (at least three of them behind square) looked edgy.

Both the seamers, Anubhav and Gaurav, got some movement in the air with a nice cloud cover helping their cause. They also hit the perfect length with movement off the pitch in both directions, into and away from the batter. Both look run-of-the-mill medium pacers but are deceptively quicker than they actually look.

In fact, the best over of the first day was the 12th of the Mumbai innings when Gaurav first cut Shaw into half with a massive in-cutter and then bowled the outgoing deliveries, beating the bat as many as five times in six balls. 
By the end of the over, he was in his hunches.

Jaiswal, at the other end, scored his first 30 runs in 52 balls, but then, gauging the two-paced nature of the pitch, started playing more cautiously. His next 48 runs came in another 111 deliveries. The first breakthrough came minutes before lunch break when Anubhav, who was bowling closer to the stumps, decided to move slightly wide and fired in a couple of deliveries with the angle.

While Shaw managed to defend one, the second delivery saw him play across the line and the stumps rattled. 
Arman Jaffer (26 off 56 balls) looked solid till he tried a forward-defensive jab off Kartikeya, without factoring in the extra bounce, and the ball took an inside edge off his bat and Yash Dubey, at short mid-wicket, completed a diving catch.
