The Indian PM was also felicitated at the meeting, which was attended by senior leaders including Amit Shah, Rajnath Singh, JP Nadda, Prahlad Joshi, and Kangana Ranaut.<h2>NDA resolution on Pahalgam</h2>"The NDA Parliamentary Party salutes the unmatched courage and unwavering commitment of our armed forces, who showed heroic valour during Operation Sindoor and Operation Mahadev. We pay our deepest condolences and respects to those who lost their lives in the Pahalgam terror attack," states the resolution. It also highlighted India's recent diplomatic wins, noting the US designation of The Resistance Front (TRF) — the terrorist group behind the deadly Pahalgam attack — as a Foreign Terrorist Organisation. Amid fresh US tariffs and escalating global economic uncertainty, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has renewed his call for citizens to buy and promote Indian-made products, stressing the need for economic self-reliance. At a public rally in Uttar Pradesh on Saturday, Modi reiterated the importance of local manufacturing and consumption, urging Indians to set a simple benchmark for every purchase: prioritising products “made by the sweat of an Indian.”&nbsp;“The world economy is going through many apprehensions, there is an atmosphere of instability. Now, whatever we buy, there should be only one scale: we will buy those things which have been made by the sweat of an Indian,” Modi said, as quoted by Bloomberg. While the Prime Minister made no direct reference to the United States, his comments come in the wake of US President Donald Trump’s imposition of 25 per cent tariffs on Indian exports, a move that has rattled Indian trade and policy circles.<h2>‘Make in India’ message finds new urgency</h2>PM Modi’s renewed emphasis echoes his long-running “Make in India” campaign, but with heightened urgency. As per Bloomberg, Trump has accused India of imposing disproportionately high tariffs compared to other Asian countries and has hinted at further penalties, citing India’s energy and defence ties with Russia.&nbsp;The new tariffs are expected to impact a wide range of Indian export sectors, from textiles and pharmaceuticals to auto parts and engineering goods. With trade relations under strain, the Prime Minister’s messaging appears calibrated to cushion India’s domestic economy through self-reliant consumption.<h2>Farmers, MSMEs and youth in focus</h2>PM Modi also framed his call for buying local as a defence of India’s most vulnerable economic segments, farmers, small industries, and unemployed youth. “The interests of our farmers, our small industries and the employment of our youth are of paramount importance,” he said, as quoted by Bloomberg. “India has to remain vigilant about its economic interests, when other countries are focusing on their own interests,” he added.&nbsp;The message aligns with the government’s larger Atmanirbhar Bharat (Self-Reliant India) push, introduced during the COVID-19 pandemic and now being adapted to weather external shocks such as global trade restrictions and supply chain disruptions.<h2>Rising protectionism reshaping trade policy</h2>The developments come against a backdrop of rising protectionism, with the US taking a tougher stance on imports across the board. India is not alone; other Asian economies are also facing increased scrutiny from Washington under President Trump’s renewed America-first trade doctrine.&nbsp;India has reacted cautiously but firmly. As per Bloomberg, the government has protested the tariffs and is exploring diplomatic channels to seek exemptions or negotiate terms for key industries. PM Modi’s strategic silence on Trump’s tariff move may be part of a broader diplomatic effort to avoid further escalation while reinforcing domestic economic resilience.&nbsp;By doubling down on the “Buy Indian” message, Modi is not just tapping into nationalism but also positioning India to weather the storm of global economic realignments. The shift reflects a broader effort to redirect consumer demand inward, mitigate external shocks, and promote long-term industrial competitiveness. While India navigates a more unpredictable global trade landscape, the Prime Minister’s latest push makes clear that local consumption will be key to insulating the economy from external pressures.&nbsp;(With inputs from the agencies)&nbsp;&nbsp;

In a major diplomatic show off, India and the United Kingdom have finalised their long-awaited Free Trade Agreement (FTA), marking a historic shift in both nations’ post-pandemic economic strategy. The deal which was signed in London by Indian Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal and UK Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds, is being touted as the UK’s largest post-Brexit trade pact and India’s most significant bilateral trade agreement in over a decade.&nbsp;So, what exactly is in the deal? Who stands to benefit the most? And why is this agreement being described as a strategic milestone beyond just trade?<h2>All about $34 billion deal</h2>At the heart of the deal lies a sharp ambition, first is to add over ₹2.86 lakh crore ($34.3 billion) to annual bilateral trade. British officials estimate it could inject up to £4.8 billion ($6.2 billion) into the UK’s GDP. For India, the agreement opens up new gateways for goods, services, and labour mobility in one of Europe’s richest markets. Both governments are framing this FTA as a partnership of equals, one designed to fuel growth, investment, and political trust.&nbsp;Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed the agreement as a “defining moment” for India’s global trade strategy. “This deal reflects India’s commitment to rules-based international trade and deepens our economic partnership with a trusted democratic partner,” he said while addressing the press after signing the historic deal.&nbsp;On the other hand, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer called it a “major win for British jobs, exports, and future growth,” adding that the agreement “symbolises a new era of collaboration with India, rooted in fairness and opportunity.”<h2>What does India gain?</h2>Indian exporters are arguably the biggest immediate winners. The agreement provides tariff-free access for 99 per cent of Indian goods entering the UK. This particularly benefiting sectors such as textiles, engineering products, jewellery, pharmaceuticals, and electric vehicles. As many of these categories earlier faced high duties in the UK previously, making them less competitive. With those barriers gone, Indian producers now have a cost advantage over rivals.&nbsp;Moreover, Indian service providers, especially in Information Technology, legal, telecom, and finance, will be able to tap into Britain’s competitive services market with fewer regulatory hurdles. The deal also includes a social security agreement to prevent Indian professionals on short-term UK assignments from paying into Britain’s pension system, reducing the cost of cross-border work.<h2>What does the UK gain?</h2>On the other hand, Britain has secured significant tariff reductions on its iconic exports. The most high-profile win is whisky. India’s steep 150 per cent import duty on Scotch will be cut to 75 per cent immediately and gradually lowered to 40 per cent over the next ten years. UK-made electric vehicles and luxury cars which are currently facing 100–110 per cent import duties will see those tariffs come down to 10 per cent, though under a strict quota system.&nbsp;Sectors like aerospace, medical equipment, and packaged food products will also benefit from greater access to Indian markets. The UK has also pushed for digital trade norms and intellectual property protections that align with its broader global trade agenda.<h2>What does the trade data shows?</h2>The UK has long run a trade deficit with India, it imports more from India than it exports to it. While Britain has seen rising exports of services to India, the goods trade has tilted heavily in India’s favour in recent years. The new FTA seeks to balance that by creating better access for UK goods and increasing the services pie for both countries.

<figure class="table"><table><tbody><tr><td>Year</td><td>UK Goods Exports</td><td>UK Services Exports</td><td>UK Goods Imports</td><td>UK Services Imports</td><td>UK Trade Deficit</td></tr><tr><td>2015</td><td>£3.5 bn ($4.6 bn)</td><td>£3.5 bn ($4.6 bn)</td><td>£5 bn ($6.5 bn)</td><td>£3.5 bn ($4.6 bn)</td><td>-£2.5 bn ($3.2 bn)</td></tr><tr><td>2020</td><td>£4 bn ($5.2 bn)</td><td>£4 bn ($5.2 bn)</td><td>£7 bn ($9.1 bn)</td><td>£5 bn ($6.5 bn)</td><td>-£4 bn ($5.2 bn)</td></tr><tr><td>2023</td><td>£6.5 bn ($8.4 bn)</td><td>£5.5 bn ($7.1 bn)</td><td>£9 bn ($11.7 bn)</td><td>£7 bn ($9.1 bn)</td><td>-£5 bn ($6.5 bn)</td></tr><tr><td>2024</td><td>£7.5 bn ($9.8 bn)</td><td>£6 bn ($7.8 bn)</td><td>£10.5 bn ($13.7 bn)</td><td>£8 bn ($10.4 bn)</td><td>-£5.5 bn ($7.2 bn)</td></tr></tbody></table></figure>Source: Office for National Statistics, UK (2024), via Bloomberg,

This persistent trade imbalance of about £5.5 billion ($7.2 billion) in 2024. It further reinforces that why the UK is keen to rebalance flows. India, meanwhile, benefits from consistent export growth, especially in technology and pharmaceuticals.&nbsp;Despite strong diplomatic ties, India still accounts for a relatively small portion of the UK’s overall trade volumes. A second data snapshot helps illustrate the scope of the opportunity.

<figure class="table"><table><tbody><tr><td>Rank</td><td>Exports Share</td><td>Imports Share</td></tr><tr><td>1. EU</td><td>47.7%</td><td>53.1%</td></tr><tr><td>2. US</td><td>16.2%</td><td>9.7%</td></tr><tr><td>3. Germany</td><td>8.8%</td><td>12.1%</td></tr><tr><td>4. Netherlands</td><td>7.6%</td><td>8.3%</td></tr><tr><td>5. Ireland</td><td>6.5%</td><td>—</td></tr><tr><td>6. India</td><td>1.9%</td><td>1.8%</td></tr></tbody></table></figure>Source: Office for National Statistics, UK (2024).&nbsp;

This data underscores how India ranks far behind the UK’s top trade partners, a gap that this FTA hopes to narrow. By easing tariffs, expanding service access, and encouraging labour mobility, the deal is expected to help India climb these rankings over time.<h2>A deeper play in a divided world</h2>Beyond the numbers, the timing of the deal is geopolitically significant. Both nations are responding to rising global protectionism and trade fragmentation. India is trying to diversify its export markets beyond China and the US, while the UK is looking to prove that post-Brexit trade diplomacy can work.&nbsp;This agreement is also symbolic as it positions India as a central partner in Britain’s Indo-Pacific tilt and reinforces the idea of “trusted democracies” building long-term trade resilience. Labour mobility, sustainable supply chains, and green tech collaboration are all expected to grow under the FTA’s framework.<h2>What happens next?</h2>The deal must now be ratified by both countries’ parliaments. Officials say the agreement could come into effect by early 2026. Meanwhile, parallel discussions on investment protection, carbon border tax alignment, and digital tax policy are still ongoing.&nbsp;Once implemented, this pact could become a blueprint for future India–EU and India–US trade deals, particularly in how it balances tariffs, services, and labour flows while respecting national policy space.&nbsp;(With inputs from the agencies)&nbsp;

He said that it is the strength of the Constitution of India that the President of the world's largest democracy comes from a poor tribal family, and it is the strength of the same Constitution that has enabled a person like him, who was born in a poor family, to become Prime Minister three times. "A few months ago, you celebrated a historic moment: Namibia elected its first woman president. We understand and share your pride and joy because in India, we also proudly say Madam President," he said. Earlier, PM Modi met Namibian President Dr Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah at the State House in Windhoek. A 27-year gap was bridged by a visit from Namibia to India at the Prime Minister level. This was also the very first bilateral State Visit that President Nandi-Ndaitwah welcomed following assuming office in March of this year. Prime Minister wished President Nandi-Ndaitwah congratulations on having been elected Namibia's Head of State. The two prime ministers discussed consolidating bilateral engagements in areas such as defence, maritime security, digital technology and UPI, agriculture, health and pharma, energy and critical minerals.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday (Jul 6) called for global collaboration on the ethical and responsible use of artificial intelligence (AI) during the ongoing BRICS summit in Brazil. Speaking at the BRICS Outreach Session on 'Strengthening Multilateralism, Economic-Financial Affairs and Artificial Intelligence' in Rio de Janeiro on Sunday, the Indian PM described AI as a powerful tool to uplift humanity—so long as innovation is matched with accountability. He also invited member states to take part in the AI Impact Summit, which India will host next year.<h2>What did PM Modi say on AI?</h2>During the outreach session, PM Modi said, "In the 21st century, the prosperity and progress of humanity depend on technology, especially Artificial Intelligence. On the one hand, AI is a very effective means of bringing about change in the life of a common man, on the other hand, questions such as risks, ethics, bias are also associated with AI." The Indian PM said that India's thinking and policy on this subject were clear, "We see AI as a medium to enhance human values and capabilities. Working on the mantra of 'AI for All'."India, he said, was already using AI across critical sectors like agriculture, healthcare, education, and governance. He added that governance must keep pace and, stressed the need for global standards to verify digital content and curb misinformation. "We believe that resolving concerns and encouraging innovation should both be given equal priority in AI governance."Pushing for global standards, Modi stressed that "We will have to work together for Responsible AI." He said that "Such global standards will have to be created that can verify the authenticity of digital content so that the source of the content can be known, transparency is maintained, and misuse is stopped. The leaders statement on Global Governance of AI being issued in today's meeting is a positive step in this direction."The Indian leader's remarks were part of a broader message about the need for greater international cooperation in a rapidly changing world. "The diversity of the BRICS group, and our firm belief in multipolarity, is our biggest strength. Today, when the world order is feeling pressure from all sides, the world is going through many challenges and uncertainties; in such a situation, the increasing relevance and influence of BRICS is natural. We should together consider how BRICS can become a pioneer of a multipolar world in the times to come," he said.Among the proposals Modi put forward was the idea of a BRICS Science and Research Repository—a shared digital archive of scientific knowledge accessible to all BRICS nations and, potentially, the Global South. India, he noted, had already "taken the initiative of 'One Nation One Subscription' to make all academic journals in India available in every corner of the country". "I suggest that we consider jointly creating a BRICS Science and Research Repository, the benefits of which can also be extended to the countries of the Global South," he added. &nbsp;

Also read: 'Visit villages of your ancestors': PM Modi announces OCI cards for 6th gen Indian origin citizens of Trinidad and Tobago He continued, "The world is faced with challenges of climate change, food, health, and energy security. Terrorism remains a pressing threat. Colonial rules of the past may have ended, but their shadows linger in new forms. There are new challenges in space and cybersecurity. Artificial Intelligence is unlocking new opportunities as well as risks. The old institutions are struggling to deliver peace and progress.” He added, “I also see our partnership in a larger global framework. The scale and speed of change in the world is unprecedented. There are fundamental shifts in the nature of politics and power. Free trade is under pressure. There are growing global divisions, disputes, and disparities.” Earlier, while speaking to members of the Indian diaspora, PM Modi encouraged people to visit their ancestral homes. He said, "I encourage all of you to visit India more in person, and not just virtually via social media. Visit the villages of your ancestors. Walk the soil they walked on. Bring your children and neighbours. Bring anyone who enjoys 'chai' and a good story. We will welcome all of you with open arms, warm hearts and Jalebi.”

Addressing the parliament in Trinidad and Tobago, PM Modi emphasised that terrorism is a global evil.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday held a video interaction with Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla, marking a historic moment as the Indian Air Force officer became the first Indian astronaut to board the International Space Station (ISS). Shukla, serving as mission pilot on Axiom Space’s Ax-4 mission, launched from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center on June 25 aboard SpaceX’s Dragon spacecraft. The Prime Minister also shared a video of the exchange on social media platform X, calling it a ‘wonderful conversation’ and praising Shukla for his milestone achievement in India’s space journey. Highlighting the symbolic value of Shukla's name, the Prime Minister remarked that the word 'Shubh' (auspicious) in his name marks a ‘shubh-aarambh’, an auspicious beginning for a new era of space exploration and scientific aspiration for India’s youth. The conversation also included a light-hearted moment about ‘gajar ka halwa’, a traditional Indian dessert. PM Modi asked, “Did you and the other astronauts eat the gajar ka halwa there?” to which Shukla responded that they enjoyed the sweet, along with other Indian treats he had carried aboard the ISS.

&nbsp;When asked about his well-being and how it felt to be in space, Shukla replied: “This journey isn’t just mine, it belongs to the entire nation. As a child, I couldn’t have imagined becoming an astronaut.”&nbsp;The Prime Minister offered heartfelt congratulations, saying, “My voice carries the collective enthusiasm of all Indians. I extend my heartfelt congratulations to you for raising India’s presence in space."&nbsp;Earlier, pictures of the interaction were shared by the Prime Minister's Office on its official X handle.&nbsp;The post read: “PM @narendramodi interacted with Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla, who is aboard the International Space Station."&nbsp;During their 14-day stay on the ISS, Shukla and his Ax-4 crewmates, mission commander Peggy Whitson (USA), and specialists Slawosz Uznanski-Wisniewski (Poland) and Tibor Kapu (Hungary)—will conduct more than 60 scientific and outreach experiments. These include studies in cancer research, DNA repair, and advanced manufacturing. Shukla will lead seven of the projects, contributing to what Axiom describes as its most ambitious research agenda yet.&nbsp;The mission also highlights growing international partnerships in space. The Ax-4 mission was made possible through collaboration between NASA and the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), following a commitment by US President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Modi to deepen cooperation in human spaceflight. It marks a key step in commercial space engagement and India’s expanding space diplomacy.
