He shifted focus on Rahul and added, “I would ask the likes of KL Rahul to play all the games and maintain the consistency that we spoke about. Show Australia that it will be worse for them in the World Cup. Just demoralize them and make sure we don’t lose."

The likes of Rohit, Virat Kohli, regular vice-captain Hardik Pandya and Kuldeep Yadav will only feature for the third ODI whereas the likes of Shreyas Iyer, Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Varma, Prasidh Krishna will look to make a mark if they get a chance during the first two games.

"I think India and Pakistan could feature, Australia and England are another two teams," Gilchrist told the press in a promotional event at Ahmedabad.

Gilchrist, however, isn't concerned and stated, "Australia will learn a lot from their efforts in South Africa when they come to India. They have got three games before the World Cup against India. So, they will have a bit more of a full-strength squad there, that might tell us a bit about where they are at."

So it's a very knowledgeable group and they are going to have to use all that experience against batting line-ups across the globe and play without fear."

In what will be India's last series before the commencement of CWC 2023, on October 05 in India, KL Rahul will lead in the opening two games with Rohit Sharma to return for the series finale. However, R Ashwin's comeback has made heads turn.&nbsp;

Ashwin, who has not played an ODI since early 2022, has rejoined the 50-over setup after a long gap. Many reports claimed&nbsp;that his inclusion was on the cards ever since Rohit hinted at his comeback post Asia Cup 2023 final, where India beat Sri Lanka by ten wickets in Colombo on Sunday (September 17), following Axar Patel's injury. For the Asia Cup final, India recalled Washington Sundar as a like-for-like replacement for Axar, but now the senior pro Ashwin has also been&nbsp;included. Meanwhile, Axar is&nbsp;part of the squad only for the third ODI, subject to fitness.

During a virtual press conference, Rohit opened up on Ashwin's ODI comeback so close to the World Cup. There are now strong possibilities of him making a late entry in the WC squad, especially if Axar&nbsp;remains unfit.&nbsp;

Rohit told, "With guys like Ashwin, game-time and time on the ground is not so much of a concern. Which is why we thought if he is an option for us, we need to get him in. With the kind of experience he has, for guys like him, it's all in the head more than the body. I thought getting him in could give is a chance to understand where he is at, how his body is and stuff like that."

"It's not like he has not been playing cricket for the last year or so. Yes, he hasn't played in this [ODI] format, but he played Test cricket recently in the West Indies, and if I'm not wrong, in the TNPL as well. Of course, there's no comparison but he has had some cricket there. The games against Australia will give us a chance to look at where he's at," he added.

As reported by Cricbuzz, Ashwin&nbsp;is scheduled to play a 50-over match in Chennai on Tuesday (September 19),&nbsp;in the local league of the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA). Thus, the 37-year-old spinner is sincerely preparing himself for&nbsp;any potential scenarios ahead of CWC&nbsp;'23&nbsp;in India.

Whatever his form was, it was 7-8 months back after which he only played in one game. So it is unfortunate," Gambhir said during a conversation on Star Sports.

Apart from Iyer, KL Rahul and Jasprit Bumrah also returned to the side following an injury lay-off and did brilliantly well whenever picked up in the Playing XI. India skipper Rohit Sharma said after the Asia Cup final that Iyer is fit and will return to the side for the three-match ODI series against Australia which starts September 22.

Irfan feels Axar will be vital to India's chances as his batting is needed at No. 8.

"He got hit in two or three places, so we don't know how serious it is. However, he is an extremely fit guy, which means he might recover quicker and it's not that he is a very aged player. It is extremely necessary for the Indian team to get him fit and come back. Australian batter Steve Smith is feeling 'no pain' in his wrist after taking a cortisone injection as he gears up for the three-match ODI series against India ahead of ODI World Cup. The batter had suffered a blow to his wrist during the Lord's Test in Ashes earlier this year and had subsequently missed out on South Africa's white-ball tour.

"I was in a brace for a couple of weeks, just trying to limit the movement, which once I got that off it hadn't really made a big difference to be honest," said Smith to Nine newspapers at an event in Sydney. “They don’t go out there and and take risks because they are so worried about what might be said or what might be printed or what might someone ask them about their place in the team. That’s the one area I am concerned with,” added Doull.

India, who are currently no. 2 in the ICC ODI rankings, are considered as one of the favorites to win the marquee tournament alongside defending champions England and Australia. They had last won the 50-over World Cup in 2011 and bowed out in semi-final in the next two editions (2015 and 2019).

As of now, the Men in Blue are competing in the Asia Cup 2023 where they'll meet Sri Lanka in the final on Sunday, September 17. India are also scheduled to play Australia in a three-match ODI series from September 22 ahead of the World Cup.

With the win, England have now taken an unassailable 2-1 lead in the four-match series. For Stokes, he registered the highest individual score for England in the shorter format, going past opener Jason Roy's 180 versus Australia in early 2018. The left-hander has, thus, kicked off his second stint in the format in style ahead of the marquee event in India starting next month.&nbsp;

From NZ's perspective, their bowlers started off nicely but England's positive approach kept them at bay as they conceded runs at regular intervals. While they managed to restrict them under 370, courtesy of Trent Boult's 5 for 51, they were never in the hunt in the steep run-chase. England’s David Willey is delighted to be back in the frame for the upcoming ODI World Cup as he looks for a shot at redemption. The left-arm pacer from Northampton was unfortunate to miss out on a spot in the 2019 ODI World Cup with Jofra Archer replacing him in the winning campaign. However, with Archer snubbed from the provisional squad Willey will hope to make the most of the opportunity.

"I'd been a big part of that from 2015 through to that World Cup, so there were mixed emotions the day they won it," Willey said ahead of the third ODI against New Zealand.

"I was obviously delighted for the lads, but it hurt. I'd have probably given my left arm to be a part of that. I think anything that happens to me in cricket now is never going to be as bad as that. As my career in the game goes on, and whatever I do after, I think that's probably a difficult but great experience for me to have - hopefully, it can serve me well in other areas of my life."

Having been named in the provisional squad for the 2019 World Cup, he was forced to make way for the then-impressive Archer. The move by the England Cricket Board (ECB) proved to be a masterstroke as Archer helped them win their maiden ODI World Cup on home soil. He bowled the decisive Super Over against New Zealand where they got the better of the Kiwis on boundaries scored.

Australia back on top in ICC ODI rankings ahead of ODI World Cup

Bangladesh skipper Shakib Al Hasan wants his ODI World Cup bound players to be rested for the upcoming three-match ODI series against New Zealand. Bangladesh, which is all but out of Asia Cup 2023 after loss against Sri Lanka on Saturday, September 9, are scheduled to host Kiwis from September 21. The series ends on September 26 and the two teams depart to India for the World Cup next day.

The reason Shakib gave while asking for the rest was to keep players 'fit and healthy' ahead of the big tournament which will involve a lot of travel. Bangladesh and New Zealand will also be playing two warm up matches on September 29 and October 2, respectively.

"We will try a few things in the three ODIs against New Zealand," Shakib said.

"If we can get one or two players from there who can fit into the team [later], it will be better for the team. Everyone has a chance [to play]. I personally believe that those who played in the Asia Cup could be rested from the New Zealand series, especially those who are confirmed for the World Cup.

The contest played at the Sophia Gardens in Cardiff saw Stokes make his first appearance in the 50-over format since returning from retirement. Stokes surprisingly called time on his ODI career in July 2022 against South Africa, but was urged by the national team management for a return to the team.

<h2>Stokes smashes fifty</h2>

Coming into bat at No.4, Stokes did not feel the heat as openers Harry Brook (25) and Dawid Malan (54) gave hosts a good start. However, with quickfire wickets falling Stokes was called into action in the 16th over. The 32-year-old was almost dismissed for a golden duck when a short ball surprised him but the shot went over the point fielder. However, he would then build his innings with Joe Root (6) and then Jos Buttler (72).

Stokes was smart with his approach and picked his spot on dull deliveries and went on to score his fifty. His innings consisted of three fours and a six. He was scoring at a strike rate of 75 and put on an 88-run partnership for the fourth wicket with skipper Buttler. The latter was in great nick of form as well and helped England reach 291/6 in their 50 overs.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has officially announced the officiating panel for the upcoming ODI World Cup in India as the top names will call the game starting from Thursday, October 5. The ICC announced a 20-member team for the World Cup that comprises of 16 umpires and four referees. India’s Nitin Menon and Sri Lanka’s Kumar Dharmasena will take charge of the curtain-raiser contest between England and New Zealand that will be played at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

The ODI World Cup will kick start in a repeat of the 2019 edition final as New Zealand will square off against defending champions England. The 20-member panel will officiate in the league stage with officials for the semifinal and final to be named after the initial stage. The officiating team will work on 48 matches during the tournament with the final taking place at the same venue as the curtain-raiser contest in Ahmedabad.

Of the 16 umpires to officiate at the World Cup, 12 belong to the elite panel of ICC umpires. The remaining four belong to the ICC Emerging Umpire Panel. They include Sharfuddoula Ibne Shahid (Bangladesh), Paul Wilson (Australia), Alex Wharf (England) and Chris Brown (New Zealand).

The trio of Dharmasena, Erasmus and Tucker had officiated in the 2019 World Cup final with another veteran Aleem Dar stepping down from the elite panel of ICC umpires in March.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has released dates for the latest phase of ticket sales for the ODI World Cup as fans will have one more opportunity to attend the carnival of cricket. The BCCI is set to release a second lot of 400, 000 tickets for the upcoming ODI World Cup with the first phase getting sold out in minutes. The fans were disappointed for not getting the tickets in the earlier phase but will now have the opportunity to book their tickets for the premium fixtures.

"The BCCI deeply acknowledges that fans are the heartbeat of the tournament, and their unwavering passion, engagement, and contributions are pivotal to the success of the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2023," the statement said.

“The general sale of tickets for all matches of the World Cup will commence from 8 pm IST on September 8, adding that fans will be notified of the further sale of tickets in the next phase in due course,” the statement further added.&nbsp;

The BCCI had seen a big backlash from the fans and the stakeholders for releasing the schedule of the ODI World Cup late while revealing the ticket details just weeks before the planned tournament. To add further embarrassment, BCCI and International Cricket Council (ICC) made further changes to the fixture list with India’s scheduled tie against Pakistan moving to Saturday, October 14.

Kishan pipped Tilak Varma and Sanju Samson to be included in the provisional squad along with keeper-batter KL Rahul. The young batter has been in solid form in the 50-over format with four successive half-centuries and confirmed his WC spot following a fine 82 versus Pakistan in India's Asia Cup 2023 opener, on September 02.&nbsp;

Speaking on Kishan, Ashwin said on his YouTube channel, "This is not a competition between Ishan Kishan and Sanju Samson, because Kishan fills so many roles. When you pick a 15-member squad, you need to pick a backup wicket-keeper. Even when we pick a Ranji Trophy squad, we pick two wicket-keepers."

The 36-year-old Ashwin further highlighted that Kishan can bat anywhere and being a left-hander, he will add more variety to the line-up. It is to be noted that India have two left-handers in the form of Kishan and Ravindra Jadeja among their main&nbsp;batters --&nbsp;Kuldeep Yadav is also a left-hander down the order -- going into the mega event.&nbsp;

Ishan, 25, has been in great form in the recent times that has seen him cement his place in the Playing XI, but with veteran Rahul set for a comeback in the team, his place could be in jeopardy. In the West Indies tour, he scored three consecutive fifties while he continued his best touch with another one in the opening Asia Cup 2023 contest against Pakistan. With four consecutive fifties, he is the most in-form player in the Indian side.

Ishan’s formidability in the team also attracts a huge interest as the team has struggled since Rishabh Pant’s near-fatal accident last December. The key role initially saw three frontrunners in the form of Rahul, Ishan, and Sanju Samson in the race to take over the duties with gloves. The Mumbai Indians batter is already an established wicketkeeper while providing competition to Rahul and Samson. As things stand, Rahul (in the World Cup squad) has been struggling with injury issues while Samson (not in the World Cup squad) has failed to impress the selectors.

There are also concerns over Rahul’s ability to don the gloves for 50 overs as he is yet to take to the pitch since the final week of the Indian Premier League (IPL). With fitness playing a key role, Ishan looks a perfect fit in the side and has barely struggled with injuries.

Interestingly, compared to previous World Cup squads, India always had a good left-right combination to play the mind games. While Ishan has been knocking on the doors for a place in the Playing XI, he has been helped in disguise by the injuries to KL Rahul and Samson’s inability to make the most of his opportunity. While Samson is no threat to Ishan since getting omitted from the ODI World Cup squad, Rahul could be his close compatriot in the team. However, with Rahul still struggling with injuries Ishan has become an automatic starter in the side.

31-year-old Rahul has missed cricketing action since May when he got injured against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) for Lucknow Super Giants (LSG). He has since been on treatment and rehabilitation and only returned to the squad for the Asia Cup 2023. However, it was later revealed he won’t be available for the group stages of the Asia Cup and will participate when the Super Four stage begins.

As things stand, the Indian team management will also have a decent headache if any player from the middle-order or opening slot goes missing. Ishan in this case could be a natural choice in the team as he can fill in at the top and the middle order. The wicket-keeper batter from Patna will be a good option if anyone from the middle-order gets injured and could also fill in for Shubman Gill and skipper Rohit Sharma if required.

India’s ODI World Cup campaign will get underway on October 8 against Australia, while also having a good warm-up during the Asia Cup. Interestingly, India will also face Australia in a three-match ODI series later this month, giving Ishan and Rahul a perfect opportunity to prove their worth in the Playing XI.

Gambhir added, "I feel Ishan Kishan has done everything he needs to do to be a frontrunner," he further added. Just because he is Ishan Kishan and hasn't played a lot of international cricket, you're saying that KL Rahul should play before him," he said. "But if Virat Kohli or Rohit Sharma were in place of Ishan Kishan, would KL Rahul be able to replace them? The answer is 'no'."

Kishan is riding high on his impressive 82 in India's Asia Cup opener versus arch-rivals Pakistan on September 02 in Kandy. Coming to bat at No. 5, the left-hander stitched a handy 138-run fifth-wicket stand with Hardik Pandya (87) to take India to 265 all-out in 48.5 overs. <h2>CALLS GROW FOR INDIA TO BECOME BHARAT</h2>

It is to be noted that top Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma hinted that the official name 'Republic of India' is set to undergo a change. "REPUBLIC OF BHARAT - happy and proud that our civilisation is marching ahead boldly towards AMRIT KAAL," Sarma wrote on X. Since then, the voices have been increasing to rename India as Bharat.

As per Article 1 of the Indian Constitution, it declares that 'India, that is Bharat' is a 'Union of States'. Further, the inaugural article of India's constitution defines India's territory as well as its nomenclature-related aspects.

New Zealand coach Gary Stead praised&nbsp;Williamson's "phenomenal dedication", adding: "He's left no stone unturned in trying to get back playing cricket at the highest level. We are delighted to be in a place to select him.

"As we've said throughout this process we want to give&nbsp;Kane&nbsp;every bit of available time to aid his recovery," Stead said. "The World Cup is not a short tournament and we will continue to monitor his progress over the next month ahead of the first tournament match."

The NZC added that the rest of the squad would be announced on Sept. 11. New Zealand play England in the final Twenty20 international of a four-match series on Tuesday, before facing the same opponents in a four-match one-day international series.
