South Africa batter Quinton de Kock has called time on his ODI career on Tuesday (September 5), bringing to an end his 10-year association with the national side. The upcoming ODI World Cup will be De Kock’s last tournament for the ODI side. Having also announced retirement from the Test side in December 2021, he will bow out of the game with an opportunity to complete 6,000 runs in the World Cup where his team will start their adventure against Sri Lanka on Saturday, October 7.

"Quinton de Kock has been a really good servant to South African cricket," South Africa's Director of Cricket Enoch Nkwe said.

"He set the benchmark with his attacking batting style and was a key member of the squad for a number of years. He also wore the captain's armband and that is an honour that very few people get to hold.”

At the time of writing, the 30-year-old has made 140 appearances in the ODI format with 5,966 runs at an average of 44.85. His ODI career also includes 17 hundreds and 29 fifties with a best of 178 against Australia at Centurion in 2016. He was the fourth fastest to reach 1,000 runs in the ODI format in just 21 innings.

"We understand his decision to step back from ODI cricket and we want to thank him for his service over the years. We wish him well for the future but still look forward to seeing him represent the Proteas in T20I cricket,” the South African cricket body said in its&nbsp;statement.

De Kock made his debut with the national side in 2012 against New Zealand in the T20I format at Durban and scored 28 runs in a one-sided contest. He would make his ODI debut against the same side in January 2013 at Paarl. He was part of the South African side during the 2015 and 2019 ODI World Cup.

Team India announced a 15-member squad for the upcoming ICC ODI World Cup, at home, starting on October 5. From India's current 18-man Asia Cup squad, including a reserve player, the trio of Prasidh Krishna, Sanju Samson and Tilak Varma have been dropped as the rest 15 made the cut in the final squad. It is to be noted that all the teams have until September 28 to make any changes to the squad. Thus, some late changes might take place.&nbsp;

After BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar named India's final 15 in a press conference along with captain Rohit Sharma in Sri Lanka, the duo took some questions from the reporters.

Sympathising with the dropped players, Rohit said, "There are no surprises and you can only get 15 in. Some of the guys will be disappointed. I have gone through it and I know how it feels. We have good all-round options and this is the best 15 we could get."

It is to be noted that Rohit played his first 50-over World Cup in 2015 as he was left out of MS Dhoni-led India's victorious squad from the 2011 edition. Back in 2011, when India co-hosted the mega event with Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, Hitman was overlooked as his competitors Virat Kohli and Suresh Raina got a look-in.

However, Rohit revamped in style and had a decent run in 2015 whereas came to his best in the 2019 edition, ending as the highest run-getter (648 runs with five centuries) in England and Wales. India will open their campaign versus Australia in Chennai&nbsp;on October 8 whereas the CWC 2023 opener will be held on October 5 with defending champions England taking on New Zealand in Ahmedabad.

At present, the Men in Blue are gearing up for the Super Four stage of the Asia Cup 2023 edition, where they will take on Pakistan on Sunday (September 10).&nbsp;

After Australia, India will face Afghanistan on October 11 at the national capital New Delhi, and then lock horns with arch-rivals Pakistan on October 14 in Ahmedabad. From thereon, the Men in Blue will take on Bangladesh, in Pune, on October 19, New Zealand on October 22 in Dharamshala, and England on October 29 in Lucknow, respectively.&nbsp;

BCCI announces India's 15-man squad for 2023 ODI World Cup, KL Rahul makes the cut

Australia batsman Glenn Maxwell is not 'under pressure' to play in the upcoming ODI series in India ahead of the ICC ODI World Cup, starting from October 5. The explosive batsman, who was part of Australia's T20I squad in the recently-concluded South Africa series, did not play any of the matches after experiencing soreness in his ankle. The pain was in the same leg in which Maxwell had suffered a gruesome injury last November.

"I still want to play some part of that India series," Maxwell said during the Big Bash League's (BBL) overseas draft on Sunday, September 4. "But I'm not feeling any pressure on it. The selectors and the staff have been brilliant with me as well. They don't want to put too much pressure on me to sort of set that date because they know they've got a bit of extra time before the World Cup. So instead of rushing it and probably putting myself a week or two behind, being able to give myself extra time and make sure we get through the whole tournament."

Maxwell, meanwhile, is expected to make it to Australia's initial 15-member World Cup squad for which the deadline is September 5. The date to announce the final squad is September 28 and Australia are scheduled to play a five-match series against South Africa before travelling to India for three-ODI series and the World Cup.&nbsp;

Maxwell has, however, taken a cortisone injection to deal with the pain but said he couldn't have predicted how sore his ankle going to be once he got to South Africa.

"I don't think I could have predicted how sore I was going to be once I got to South Africa," he said. "But it was one of those things. Even when I went to train that day, I still felt fine. The International Cricket Council (ICC) has announced the warm-up fixtures for all 10 participating teams in the ODI World Cup which is starting from October 5 in India. Each team will play two warm-up matches at three venues namely Hyderabad, Guwahati and Thiruvananthapuram in week preceding the tournament.

“The 10 teams will each play two official 50-over contests during the week leading up to the start of the World Cup on October 5, with matches to be held in three different cities across India,” said an official release by the ICC.

All games will commence at 2:00pm IST and teams will be allowed to field all members of their 15-player squads during the matches,” it added.

Apart from 10 warm-up games, the World Cup will have 48 games, including two semi-finals and the final, in a round-robin format.

India will be playing its two warm-up games against defending champions England and Netherlands. The dates and venues for India's fixtures are September 30 and October 3 in Guwahati and Thiruvananthapuram, respectively. Before the World Cup, India will also be taking part in the Asia Cup.

The regional tournament, which starts August 30, is being played in 50-over format this time as a practice tournament for the quadrennial event. India also announced its 17-man squad for Asia Cup recently and the same players, more or less, are expected to make it to the World Cup squad as well.&nbsp;

Being the host country, India are one of the favorites to win the tournament. They had last won the 50-over World Cup in 2011 while hosting it alongside Bangladesh.

If you talk about genuine spinner, I don't think there's any spinner in India better than Chahal in white-ball format. Yes, his last few games weren't good, but that doesn't make him a bad bowler."

“I think his presence in the team was necessary. I hope the doors aren't closed to him. It's important to consider him for the World Cup because the tournament is in India. Chahal is a proven match-winner. I can understand his form isn't good, so you may have rested him. But I think if he was with the team, his confidence would've stayed intact. Any player who comes back after being dropped, the pressure to perform is always there," he added.

After India's squad got announced, captain Rohit addressed the press and opened up on the spinners finalised for the Asia Cup. He said, "We had a deep discussion about an off-spinner. And about a leg-spinner as well. Where the thing actually boils down is, the batting option at No. 8 and No. 9."

"We want somebody who can bat at that spot. Axar being Axar, he had a good run this year, and batted well in white-ball cricket, especially. He did not get a lot of opportunities in red-ball but he batted well in white-ball cricket, especially in the IPL. In the West Indies tour, he couldn't get a lot of opportunities because he bats at the backend. With him being there, it allows us the option of first having a left-hander whom we can use up the order and go in to play the spinners. He can do that for us," Rohit stated.

Hitman added,&nbsp;"We thought about off-spinners as well, Ashwin and Washi as well but right now, Chahal has to miss out because we can only get 17 players there. The only way we could have done that (brought him in) is by taking one of the seamers out. We cannot really do that because seamers are going to play a big role in the next 2 months, considering the number of games in the next two months. Some of them are coming back after a long time. We wanted to get them in and see what they can do."

Chahal, a veteran of 72 ODIs,&nbsp;has&nbsp;claimed 121 wickets in the shorter format and was part of Virat Kohli-led India's 2019 ODI World Cup campaign, where the Men in Blue bowed out in the semi-finals.

Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Vice President Rajeev Shukla has made it clear that there won't be any more changes in the ICC ODI World Cup 2023 schedule. Shukla made the comments in reply to Hyderabad Cricket Association's (HAC) recent request to provide a gap between back-to-back games marked for Rajiv Gandhi Stadium, Uppal in Hyderabad.

“I am in charge of the Hyderabad venue for the World Cup, if there will be any issue or anything, I will try to get it resolved. It is not easy to change the World Cup schedule, and it’s unlikely to happen. BCCI can’t change the schedule, teams, ICC and all involved can,” said Shukla.

The statement came after an HCA official told news agency PTI that they have sent in a request to BCCI to reschedule consecutive games slated on October 9 (New Zealand vs Netherlands) and October 10 (Pakistan vs Sri Lanka). The HCA made the request after the city police cited security concerns in holding back-to-back games.

"I can't say it would be changed for sure but back-to-back games are not ideal. I mean if they (BCCI) are reconsidering that will be well and good. We will have to work with security agencies.&nbsp;

"Anyone would want a day in between two World Cup games. We are still engaging with security agencies to see if it is possible or not. At the same time, we are also keeping BCCI in the loop. The BCCI is completely aware of what we are trying to do," an HCA official had told PTI on condition of anonymity.

Notably, the World Cup schedule has&nbsp;already seen revisions with as many as nine games being rescheduled, including India vs Pakistan (from October 15 to October 14).&nbsp; The Pakistan-Sri Lanka fixture was also slated for October 12 in Hyderabad but was shifted to October 10 in a revised schedule, making it a consecutive game for the venue.

The schedule underwent changes as some matches clashed with festivals in the host cities during the game time. The timetable for the quadrennial event, which is marked to begin on October 5, was first released on June 28 - 100 days before the tournament - a historic late announcement.

World Cup 2023: Left-handed Tilak Varma could be a plus in middle order, feels Ravi Ashwin

England Test captain Ben Stokes' decision to come out of ODI retirement is not going down well with former Australia skipper Tim Paine. Speaking on a podcast show, Paine criticised Stokes for 'picking where he wants to play' and pushing others down the peck.

Notably, Stokes had announced the ODI retirement about an year ago citing workload but has decided to come out of it and play in the upcoming ODI World Cup in India. The quadrennial tournament will begin on October 5 and England will enter as defending champions for the first time.

“Ben Stokes coming out of one day retirement, I found that interesting. It was a bit of, ‘Me, me, me’, there isn’t it? It was, ‘I’ll pick and I’ll choose where I want to play and when I want to play’, and, ‘I’ll play in the big tournaments,’” Paine said on SEN Tassie.

Akhar, in an interview with RevSportz, opined on India's empty trophy cabinet since 2013 and feels things have gone south for India ever since Dhoni stepped down as the captain. Under the legendary skipper, India won the 2007 T20 World Cup, 2011 ODI World Cup and 2013 Champions Trophy. In addition, he led India to the No. 1 spot in the ICC Test Rankings.&nbsp;

Akhtar said, "First of all, it is the pressure that you all put on the team. It is almost impossible to play with such pressure. Like I told you, it is as if you can’t lose. If you, God forbid, lose, all hell will break loose."

He further opined, "The second and more important point is you had someone who could soak in all the pressure, and protect his teammates. He would not let his teammates feel the pressure, and that was the best thing about MS Dhoni. You won the 2007 World T20 under him, the 2011 World Cup and then the 2013 Champions Trophy. Akhtar added, "Make no mistake, Rohit does have the team to win the World Cup. As a batter, he is perhaps more talented than Virat Kohli also. He is a classical batsman and the kind of shots he plays, it is just mind-blowing. But with captaincy, is he being able to do that? Let him prove me wrong and all of us wrong, for that’s what all of India will want him to do in this World Cup."

"You've got to be flexible with your batting ladder. No matter who the name of the player is. You do not own positions. You got to have flexibility. That is paramount, and use the right guys against the right oppositions,” Shastri further asserted.

Under Rohit, India will start as one of the favourites for the coveted title despite their mixed run across formats in recent times. In addition, the former head coach believes that the India think tank has a group of 18-20 players that have been shortlisted for the home ODI WC. "The think tank would have thought about a group of 18 or 20 players at least four or five months before the World Cup and then given opportunities to each one of them, kept an eye on the injuries too, you know, whichever players who were part of the mix who got injuries and just come back, and then pick the right guys,” Shastri added.

India will look to end their ICC title drought since 2013 when they turn up for the 50-over showpiece event at home. Thus, Rohit has a litmus test to lead India to the mega title after a long time.

The England Test captain was pushed by senior England players and selectors in recent times to make a comeback to the 50-over format, having hanged his boots during the South Africa series last year. However, developments on Wednesday saw him return to the squad as England bid to defend their World Cup crown in India. Stokes has been a regular feature in the England T20I and Test squad but has not played in the ODI team since last July.

The selector’s panel led by former all-rounder Luke Wright intends&nbsp;to use Ben Stokes as a key member of the team when England get their campaign in the World Cup underway. The 15-member squad for the New Zealand series is most likely to travel to the World Cup where they will play in the curtain-raiser encounter against New Zealand on October 5 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

Interestingly, Stokes has not played white-ball cricket for England since the final of the T20 World Cup in Melbourne in November 2022. He has been away from the national set-up for the limited-overs format, promoting retirement talks. However, his return to the national team for the New Zealand series will be a big addition to the side as they enter a crucial couple of months.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) shared a video on Pakistan cricket on the country's 76th Independence Day on Monday (August 14).&nbsp;The two-minute 21-second clip traced back to Pakistan's international cricket debut in 1952 and captured some of their biggest moments, such as the&nbsp;historic ODI World Cup triumph in 1992 till the 2022 T20 World Cup where Babar Azam-led Men in Green reached the final.

However, the video has not been well-received by the Pakistan cricket fans. The short clip is facing a severe backlash as it did not involve Imran Khan, the national captain and former prime minister who led Pakistan to their first-ever mega title during the 1992 ODI World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.

The caption of the video reads, "Making history isn't just about one day; it's about the legends we create and the tales we script. Pakistan Cricket Team – a legacy that echoes through time."

The viral clip comprised some big names from Pakistan cricket such as Javed Miandad, Wasim Akram, Shoaib Akhtar, Waqar Younis, Shahid Afridi, and Babar.

It displayed some of their glorious moments in 1992 win, the 2009 T20 World Cup victory and&nbsp;2017 Champions Trophy win, where they trounced India in the summit clash. However, Imran -- a veteran of 88 Tests and 175 ODIs -- was nowhere to be found.&nbsp;

'Disgusting': Fans react after Imran Khan ousted from PCB's video on Pakistan cricket legends

There were strong rumours&nbsp;this weekend that England's white-ball captain Jos Buttler is set to talk to his Test counterpart Ben Stokes to convince him to reverse his ODI retirement call for the forthcoming World Cup, in India. Well, it looks like the English Test skipper is ready to make a U-turn and come out of 50-over retirement for the ICC event.&nbsp;As per fresh reports, Stokes is now considering to come out of ODI retirement&nbsp;if asked by white-ball skipper Buttler.

According to a report in Telegraph Sport, Stokes if willing to risk missing IPL 2024 if he needs ample recovery time in his schedule. He represents the MS Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the premier tournament in India.

It is to be noted that the all-rounder called it quits from the shorter format in July 2022, citing&nbsp;‘exhaustion due to too much cricket’. While he was asked about a return in ODIs during the recently-held Ashes 2023, in the United Kingdom, the 32-year-old gave a fitting response.

"I'm retired," Stokes reiterated, as quoted by the ICC. "I'm going on holiday after this game and that's as far as I'm thinking."

However, he had a different view after starring in England's T20 World Cup 2022 final win, over Pakistan, with a gritty 52* at the MCG, Melbourne last November. Back then,&nbsp;he was asked if he is inclined to return to the ODI format.

To this, Stokes&nbsp;stated, "… who knows how I might feel towards a World Cup at the time. Going to a World Cup is an amazing thing to do, to represent your country. But at the moment I'm not even thinking about that."

After all, the last three editions have been won by the hosts. India, under MS Dhoni, started this trend in 2011 when the cricket-crazy country co-hosted the ODI World Cup (ODI WC) along with Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. Back then, the Men in Blue trounced Sri Lanka in the summit clash by six wickets at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai to lift the title.

Will Rohit-led Men in Blue replicate Dhoni &amp; Co.'s heroics? Well, India do have the arsenal but still lag behind in many areas. The No. 4 spot continues to be a worry, which proved to be India's Achilles heel in the 2019 edition as well. It became a musical chair with no confirmed taker. This time around, the situation is pretty much the same. The injury to Shreyas Iyer is, however, the main reason for India's No. 4 spot still being a persistent issue.&nbsp;

In an interaction with news agency PTI, former Indian chief selector MSK Prasad said, "First of all, we should know whether Shreyas Iyer is fit or not. So, in case, if Shreyas Iyer is ruled out, in the present scenario, one guy who fits the bill is Tilak Varma, because of his versatility, because of his ability to play fast bowling and spin bowling and also because of his ability to switch the gears as and when required. More than anything else, we don't have a left-hander at the top of the order. So all these things will definitely go in favour of Tilak Varma."

On his YouTube channel, R Ashwin stated, "This is neck-and-neck with respect to the World Cup. So, will they think about Tilak Varma as an option if we don’t have enough backups? Because Sanju Samson has performed really well in ODIs. But the exciting part about Tilak Varma is that he is a left-hander and Team India is lacking left-handers. Jaddu (Ravindra Jadeja) is the only left-handed batter in the top 7."

Ashwin added, "And look at the spinners from all the top teams. Australia have Ashton Agar. England has Moeen Ali and a leggie in Adil Rashid. So, most teams don’t have a finger spinner to challenge the left-handed batters. That is why the emergence of Tilak is crucial."

Just like Yashasvi Jaiswal, Prithvi Shaw, Shubman Gill, Rishabh Pant, etc., the 20-year-old Varma will also be a part of the national setup post the CWC '23 with India nearing a massive transition (with the likes of Rohit, Virat Kohli, Ajinkya Rahane, etc. in the twilight of their careers). However, his inclusion in the ODI setup with regard to the upcoming world event makes little to no sense. The Mumbai Indians (MI) star just has a handful of matches under his belt in the gruelling international circuit. While his start is surely promising, although in the shortest format, ODIs is a different ball game altogether. Look at Suryakumar. Shaw, playing his third domestic contest on Wednesday, August 9 for Northamptonshire amassed 244 runs before leaving the field with a standing ovation. The selectors will soon announce the squad for the ODI World Cup and could now consider him a serious candidate as the deadline approaches.

Batting first, Shaw started with relative ease as he bulldozed opposition bowlers. His innings consisted of 28 fours and 11 massive sixes that saw him score 244 before he was scalped on the third ball of the final over of the innings. He scored at a strike rate of nearly 160, another key indicator of his dominance with the bat.

He had initially started on a slow note, but once he got used to conditions the Mumbai batter accelerated his innings. He had the opportunity to break Rohit Sharma’s record of highest One Day score of 264 runs but missed out by 20 runs. He has been in and out of the Indian side and was not considered for any series after the Indian Premier League (IPL) where he had a dismal run.

His sensational knock saw Northamptonshire end at 415/8 in 50 overs with Sam Whiteman being the only other man with a plus score. He was earlier in the headlines at the start of the year when he scored 379, second highest in Ranji Trophy history, to grab the attention of the selectors. He last played for India in July 2021 during the Sri Lanka tour and has been out of contention since.

The selector’s panel chaired by another former Mumbai player, Ajit Agarkar could have some reservations for Shaw after his blistering knock. Despite this knock, Shaw will be below the pecking order of KL Rahul, Ishan Kishan, and Sanju Samson while Shreyas Iyer is another one battling with injuries.

India’s team for the ODI World Cup is likely to be announced once the final medical reports of Rahul, Iyer, and Prasidh Krishna arrive in the last week of August or the first week of September.
