The New Zealand World Cup squad got a much-needed impetus to their chances as injured fast bowler Tim Southee is getting back to building a bowling load ahead of the tournament opener against England on October 5. The bowler had fractured his right thumb during the ODI series against England in the build-up for the quadrennial event.

"It's still a bit tender where obviously there's a bit of scarring and a bit of numbness around where the plate is," Southee said after arrival in Ahmedabad ahead of New Zealand's game against England.

"So I guess it's just [about] getting used to that. And getting back into some bowling. Haven't done a lot of bowling over the last couple of weeks, so it's about getting your loads back up as well as managing the thumb."

The fast bowler acknowledged that the prospects of him bowling were not so high when he got injured but he has managed to recover a bit in time.

"It's been a crazy couple of weeks," Southee said. "A bit of a race against time to get here, but managed to get here and it's a great place to come. It's an awesome place to come and play cricket, let alone being a World Cup," he added.

Talking about the injury, Southee revealed that he hasn't suffered an injury like this before and that he hopes to be right in time with the recovery process.

"[The injury was] something new. Haven't done an injury like this before. I guess when something like that happens so close to a world event, your mind starts to drift towards that. With the limited time we had, I guess sitting down and working out the fastest recovery time, and the route back was to chuck some screws in it and a plate and hope for the best. Everyone I've dealt with and the process has been brilliant to get me to this stage. So fingers crossed we can carry on the recovery process and be right in time."

This would be Southee's fourth World Cup appearance, having already taken part in the 2011, 2015 and 2019 editions. The Black Caps were finalists in both the 2015 and 2019 editions while being the only non-Asian team in the 2011 semifinals.

Be it for the schedule, the emergence of the shorter format, or people's inclination towards watching a fast-paced, result-oriented form of the game, 50 overs cricket looks likely to face its worst fear. Days away from the start of the Cricket World Cup in India, Marylebone Cricket Club's (MCC) new incoming president, Mark Nicholas, feels the supernatural growth of the T20 format will curb ODI's sustainability in times to come.&nbsp;

Succeeding Stephen Fry as president of cricket's oldest and most prestigious members' club, Mark Nicholas echoes the same views as those of MCC's World Cricket Committee's members, who met in July to call for ODI cricket to cut down outside the World Cup years.

Speaking with ESPNcricinfo, Mark said considering fans' keen interest in watching T20 cricket due to its fast nature and how bilateral cricket is fading away with each passing series, ODIs should get reduced during the World Cup period only following this edition.

"We believe strongly that ODIs should be World Cups only. We think it's difficult bilaterally now to justify them. They're not filling grounds in a lot of countries. And there is a power at the moment to T20 cricket that is almost supernatural," Nicholas told ESPNcricinfo.

"It's more than just ticket sales. It's the amount of people that want to own franchises, the amount of countries that want to run tournaments, it's the amount of players that want to be in a market all around the world.

"In a free market, the most money wins. And that's just the end game. The players can see that bubbling away, and they want to be a part of it. So, it is an extraordinary power that T20 has, and I think scheduling 50-over cricket alongside it just continues the story of the death knell of the ODI game," Mark added.

Even in the lead-up to the World Cup, several first-team players from a few countries announced their decision to retire from the ODIs following the mega event, mainly to pursue their careers in franchise-based T20 leagues. Quinton de Kock from South Africa and Naveen-ul-Haq from Afghanistan are among those.

Meanwhile, Cricket World Cup 2023 will get underway on Thursday (Oct 5), with the opener to be played between New Zealand and England in Ahmedabad.&nbsp;

While Ashwin did well in the two games he played against Australia in the three-match ODI series after the Asia Cup, the bowler said that dealing with pressure is paramount in the World Cup. Notably, Ashwin took four wickets in two games he played against Australia, including a three-wicket haul in the second ODI.

Speaking on the sidelines of India's warm-up game against England on September 30, Ashwin, however, said that he did not think to be in the World Cup squad.

"I would have said that you were joking. Life is full of surprises. Honestly did not think I would be here. Circumstances have made sure I am here today, the team management have shown trust," said Ashwin when asked if he thought he'd playing in the World Cup.

Being in a good space, enjoying this tournament will keep me in good stead. This could be my last World Cup for India, so enjoying the tournament is of utmost importance," added Ashwin.

Notably, Ashwin is only one of the two India players to feature in both 2011 and 2023 World Cup squad with the other one being Virat Kohli. The bowler, who made his ODI debut for India in 2010, has 155 wickets to his name in 115 games.

It is worth noting, that India will take on the defending champions on Saturday in their first warm-up game at Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati. Earlier, Mohammad Rizwan’s ton for Pakistan saw them score 345/5 in 50 overs against a resolute Kiwi bowling attack. Rizwan scored 103 while he was supported by Babar Azam (80) and Saud Shakeel (75) as they had a good day at the office with the bat in the first warm-up contest.

Pakistan will now face Australia in their second warm-up match on Tuesday, October 3 at the same venue in Hyderabad while New Zealand will take on South Africa in Thiruvananthapuram on Monday.

All teams have to announce their final 15 prior to September 28 and any changes after that date would need&nbsp;approval from the ICC. With suspense continuing on Ashwin's place, head coach Rahul Dravid revealed there are 'no changes' as of now on the final 15, which was announced early this month.&nbsp;

KL and his keeping through 50 overs, returning after 6 months, has been great. Shreyas has got some good knocks in the last couple of games. Really happy with how things are going and hopefully we can keep the momentum going into the World Cup."

Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan has outlined plans for his international retirement but has vowed to continue after the upcoming ODI World Cup in India. Shakib, re-appointed as Bangladesh skipper will have a task in hand to lead the side to their maiden appearance in the World Cup semifinal. However, opening up on his international retirement, he is willing to continue at least until the Champions Trophy in Pakistan in 2025.

"The 2025 Champions Trophy for ODIs and the 2024 T20 World Cup for T20Is. Tests may be sooner. Maybe (after the World Cup)," Shakib said while speaking to T-Sports.

"I will retire all at once, but I will stop playing each format one by one. I will announce my retirement after the 2025 Champions Trophy."

Shakib has been a great servant to Bangladesh cricket having represented the side since making his debut in 2006. So far he has played 240 ODI matches while also playing 117 T20Is and 66 Test matches. As an all-rounder for the national side, he has amassed nearly 14000 international runs and scalped 681 wickets. He remains one of the finest cricketers to have played for Bangladesh.

Bangladesh will open their ODI World Cup campaign on Saturday, October 7 against Afghanistan in Dharamsala. However, their preparations will get underway on Friday, September 29 against Sri Lanka while they will also face England on Monday, October 2 in the World Cup warm-up games. The team made an interesting choice ahead of the marquee tournament as they dropped former skipper Tamim Iqbal, despite him stating he is fit to go.

World number one&nbsp;tennis&nbsp;player Novak Djokovic is a six-time winner of the Rome Masters but on Wednesday he swapped his racket for a set of golf clubs to appear in the All Star Match in the build-up to the 44th Ryder Cup.

The Serbian, who claimed a record-equalling 24th Grand Slam title by winning the U.S. Open this month, was playing alongside world number one golfer with disabilities Kipp Popert as part of Colin Montgomerie's team which also featured Gareth Bale.

"It's such an honour, a golden opportunity for a once in a lifetime experience," the nervous-looking 36-year-old said on the first tee surrounded by an enormous grandstand. "Thanks to all the fans for coming and putting a bit of extra pressure on us on the first tee. It's a unique experience."

With hundreds of fans in the stands and many more lining the fairway, Djokovic initially walked out to address his ball with a&nbsp;tennis&nbsp;racket, before switching to a driver. After a couple of practice swings were greeted with cries of "oles", he sent his ball down the first fairway, puffing out his cheeks with relief and thumping his heart.

Djokovic and England's Popert were up against Spain's F1 driver Carlos Sainz who recently won the Singapore Grand Prix and Italian G4D golfer Tommaso Perrino.

After the second ODI, he complained of back issues -- which had forced him to miss the Asia Cup 2023 edition -- and eventually got ruled out. Thus, Tamim lost his spot in the World Cup squad due to injury concerns. However, the opener made a shocking claim of being&nbsp;a victim of dirty politics.

On Wednesday (September 27), Tamim took to Facebook and confirmed that&nbsp;he would have been fit enough to take part in the ODI World Cup. However,&nbsp;he won't be travelling to India solely because he is aware of the roadblocks being created for him by the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB). One of which, he said, was a top board official suggesting him to give up his opening slot and bat lower in the order.

Now, Shakib has hit back at Tamim's claims and lashed out at the former captain. "I am sure someone who is authorized had said this (to Tamim). I am sure whoever has said it, he thought of the team. I am just going to tell someone that you can do whatever you want. Is the team first or the individual?" Shakib told the Dhaka-based TV channel T-Sports in an interview&nbsp;aired on Wednesday evening.

"Someone like Rohit Sharma built his career from No. 7 to opener, scored 10,000-plus runs. If he sometimes bats at No 3 or 4, would it be a big problem? It is totally childish. It is my bat, I will play. No one else can play. A player should bat at any position for the team. Team first. It doesn't make any difference if you have made 100 or 200, and the team loses. What can you do with personal achievement? You want to make a name for yourself?" Shakib pointed out.

Shakib went on to add that he did not wish to carry a half-fit player in a marquee event like the ODI World Cup. He claimed that anyone playing without being 100% fit is cheating the team.

I think we should accept it, and not just Tamim but every player (that you have to be fully fit when playing for the team or country)."

Shakib added, "Kane Williamson won't play the first two matches (in CWC '23), but then he will start playing.&nbsp;If I knew something like this, I wouldn't have any problems. But if I know that there's uncertainty about him playing the seventh or the third or the first game, or that I will only know in the morning of the game, it will be difficult for me to select the team. I don't think we need such a player."

"I certainly heard that he will play selectively. A journalist can't really tell you that he will come to the office an hour before he wants to come to office. If you ask me personally, if I was the company CEO, I won't keep that employee. Although I never had any discussion about this matter."

36-year-old Shakib also criticised Tamim for not leaving captaincy early and stated, "I have often heard in the dressing room that he is leaving the captaincy. Even a player once told him that 'bhai, leave it early so that the new captain gets a bit of time'. Exactly that's what happened. The one who came in, didn't get the time. Each and everyone knew including the selectors and board officials. Papon&nbsp;bhai&nbsp;(BCB president Nazmul Hassan) certainly knew about it."

"I don't know why he didn't leave it (earlier). He can tell you. It is like, your commander takes you to war but (Shakib mimicking a solider) after he has got you ready, the commander isn't telling you to fire or retreat. Where will you go? We were in this situation in the last two matches against Afghanistan (in July). The captain wouldn't have changed ahead of the Asia Cup and the World Cup, unless he himself announced that he was resigning or retiring. It would have happened 18 months ago, when everyone knew what was about to happen," Shakib added.

It will be interesting to see if Tamim responds to Shakib's claims. For Bangladesh, they play Sri Lanka and England in their two CWC '23 warm-up ties, on September 29 and October 02, before opening their campaign in the tournament versus Afghanistan on October 07 in Dharamshala.
