In a big boost for the hosts, opener Shubman Gill has recovered from his illness and could play his first ODI World Cup match on Saturday.

When he came out to bat in the India-Afghanistan game, the crowd started chanting Kohli's name. The same happened during the Indian run-chase as well when the former Indian skipper took matters into his own hands and gestured to the crowd to stop the chants.

The two buried their hatchet with a warm hug, which received rousing applause from the Delhi crowd. Gautam Gambhir -- former Indian opener and LSG mentor who is on commentary duty in CWC 2023 --&nbsp;lauded Kohli for his gesture. Talking to Jatin Sapru, he said on air,&nbsp;"That's a great gesture and I hope from here on, in the upcoming matches, in every one, people are reminded of Virat's gesture because every professional cricketer works hard to make it to this level to play for the country, to play in the IPL."

"If you can't support anyone, don't criticise him. You have the right to support your favourite player but you don't have any to criticise a player," the former batter further opined.

People are coming to play in our country, and as hosts, we can become better brand ambassadors. The players coming here should take only good memories."

Gambhir was serving as Lucknow's mentor during Kohli-Naveen's spat in the LSG-RCB game in early May. He also got into a&nbsp;heated argument with Kohli, which made heads turn back then. However, Kohli-Naveen's warm hug has finally put an end to the whole episode.

<h2>Williamson leads the charge</h2>

Tasked to chase 246, New Zealand did not have the best start to the match as they lost Rachin Ravindra (9) early in the first powerplay. However, returning skipper Williamson would then make an impressive showing with the bat after he joined Devon Conway (45). The pair would put on 80 runs for the second wicket before Shakib Al Hasan got the better of him.

Williamson and Daryl Mitchell would then take the initiative in their own hand as they stitched a partnership of 108 runs for the third wicket. While they both looked to have got the team home, concerns were raised in the camps of New Zealand as Williamson had to retire hurt. Before the fourth ball of the 39th over, Williamson called it a day on 78 to leave the field.

He was struck on the right thumb which saw him in excruciating pain and had to leave the field. He was struggling with a knee injury before the start of the World Cup and did not play in the opening two matches of the World Cup. New Zealand on the other hand already have Tim Southee on the treatment table due to a similar injury.

<h2>Ferguson runs riot for New Zealand</h2>

Earlier, Lockie Ferguson scalped three wickets to break the back of Bangladesh’s batting attack. Vice-captain Liton Das was dismissed on the first ball of the match for a golden duck while Mushfiqur Rahim (66) was the top scorer. There were a couple of wickets each for Trent Boult and Matt Henry as Bangladesh were reduced to 245/9.

New Zealand were next take on minnows Afghanistan on Wednesday (Oct 18) at the same venue in Chennai with an opportunity to register a fourth consecutive win. They will then take on India on Sunday (Oct 22) in a top battle against the hosts. Bangladesh will next take the field on hosts India in Pune on Thursday.

"A great win for the boys, assessed conditions well, played accordingly, stuck to our strengths, and came out on top. They were potent up front, so we assessed our scoring options,” De Kock said in the post-match.

Dav Whatmore slams Australia's 'unusual'  CWC '23 performance, feels 'they are lagging in confidence'

Australia have found the going very hard at the ODI World Cup in India after they were smashed for 311/7 runs by South Africa on Thursday (Oct 12) in their second outing. This comes on the back of a big defeat against India on Sunday. Dav Whatmore, WION's in-house expert and former Australian cricketer,&nbsp;has now raised concerns for the Aussies as he feels it won’t be a surprise to see them bow out of the league stage.

Australia have reached at least the semifinals of the World Cup in six of the last seven tournaments, setting a benchmark for the side.

“I won’t be surprised if Australia don’t make the semifinals of the ODI World Cup as they have been struggling on multiple fronts. Australia did not have the best of starts to the World Cup having lost to India. They are missing a genuine wicket-taking spin bowler. Adam Zampa has not delivered to the expectations while Ashton Agar has been missing from the side,” Whatmore said on WION’s podcast on Thursday.

Australia were reduced to 199 against India on Sunday where their batting did not click on while their bowling department was also on the receiving end on Thursday against South Africa.

Zampa, the only specialist spinner in the team, has been given away 123 runs in 18 overs so far in two matches at the World Cup which has raised concerns for the Aussies.

In match 9 of the ODI World Cup 2023, Rohit Sharma-led India demolished Afghanistan by eight wickets in pursuit of 273 at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, New Delhi on Wednesday (Oct 11). Being asked to bowl first, Afghanistan did well to post 272 for 8, riding on captain&nbsp;Hashmatullah Shahidi (80) and&nbsp;Azmatullah Omarzai (62) but fell flat with the ball as&nbsp;skipper Rohit (131) and Virat Kohli (55 not out) propelled India to a stunning eight-wicket win in 35 overs.&nbsp;

Thus, with two wins in a row, India will now shift their focus on playing arch-rivals Pakistan in match 12 of the ongoing marquee event. After the win against Afghanistan, Rohit opened up on facing Pakistan and said that it is important for his side to not worry about the 'external factors'.&nbsp;

While the Indian team was playing against Afghanistan on Wednesday, Gill arrived in Ahmedabad to prepare for the clash. Gill spent a night at the Kaurvery Hospital in Chennai and returned to the hotel before taking the flight to Ahmedabad. It was advised by the doctors that Gill was good enough to take a flight to Ahmedabad as he could not fly to Delhi with his teammates because his platelet count was low and a flight journey was not advisable.

The rest of the Indian team is expected to arrive in Ahmedabad on Thursday evening as they prepare for the crunch clash. The team’s press conference takes place on Friday with a brief practice session scheduled for Thursday. The team will train with a full warm-up session on Friday, which will give a clear idea of how fit Gill will be.

It is thought that team management is not willing to take any risk with Gill, but will explore any opportunities if he trains on Friday. However, with no rush to get him back in the team, Ishan Kishan and skipper Rohit Sharma are likely to continue as the openers. Former Australian cricketer Dav&nbsp;Whatmore is of the view that Pakistan bowlers have been let down by their fielders in the ongoing World Cup. Quizzed about the reason why Pakistani bowlers were conceding 300+ scores routinely, despite having an enviable&nbsp;bowling lineup, WION's in-house expert pointed out the obvious.&nbsp;

Whatmore reflected on the dropped chance that allowed Sri Lankan no. 3 Kusal Mendis to hammer a stunning century that included 14 boundaries and six maximums.&nbsp;

"Kusal Mendis is batting beautifully, one of the best batters in this tournament so far. Perhaps, there are a few more such batters in other teams. But it would help if they [Pakistan] can hold those catches," said Whatmore.&nbsp;

"We saw another example of a good player being dropped and then goes on to make a big hundred. So I think they need to support their bowlers a bit more," he added.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Earlier in the tournament, during the Australia vs India match, Mitchell Marsh dropped Virat Kohli when the latter was on 12. With the game in favour of Australia, Kohli's wicket could have&nbsp;shut the doors for India. It appeared that the Men in Green would go down easily before opener Abdullah Shafique -- playing his first game in ODI World Cup -- and keeper-batter Mohammed Rizwan stood tall with an impressive 176-run third-wicket stand. Shafique's 113 and Rizwan's 131 not out led the one-time winners to a convincing six-wicket win.&nbsp;

After their win over Sri Lanka, Little Master Sunil Gavaskar lauded Rizwan-Shafique's show. He feels this bodes well for the side as no significant contribution came from Babar. He further opined that Pakistan need not depend solely on Babar now with many others standing up to the occasion.

Gavaskar said on Star Sports, "When you are chasing 350 runs, it takes a lot. They also lost a couple of early wickets in the game. I think more than anything else, I mean, we have all known about what Rizwan can do. But Abdullah Shafique, he looked like a Test batter. The way he anchored the innings with Rizwan, it was great."

The cricketer-turned-commentator added, "More than anything else, Pakistan would have realised that they do not have to depend on Babar. And if Babar fails, there are other batters who are there to score the runs. And I think that is such an important thing for Babar himself because the pressure will not be on him that he has to score all the time."

Talking about Gurbaz's dismissal, it was a well-executed short-pitched delivery from birthday boy Hardik Pandya. The batter went for the shot and seemed to have timed it well. Shardul, stationed at deep fine leg, caught the ball, was about to touch the boundary rope and, hence, threw the ball in the air, regained balance and completed the catch without breaking a sweat.&nbsp;

Former India cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar has raised concerns over Hardik Pandya’s involvement as a bowler in the ODI World Cup as he feels it could bring added pressure to him. The Indian team is all set to take on Afghanistan in their second ODI World Cup contest on Wednesday (Oct 11) in New Delhi’s Arun Jaitley Stadium. Pandya, an integral part of the Playing XI, has been India’s big-game player with his batting and bowling abilities.

Ahead of the big-ticket clash, as many as over 11,000 personnel of various agencies, including Gujarat Police, NSG, RAF, and home guards among others are set to&nbsp;be deployed in Ahmedabad and at the&nbsp;stadium for the smooth conduct of the match, a senior officer said told.

The official confirmed that the high-level security arrangements have been put in place following threats.&nbsp;A detailed meeting has been held between the&nbsp;Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel,&nbsp;Minister of State for Home Harsh Sanghavi, state DGP Vikas Sahay, GS Malik and other senior police officers in Gandhinagar to analyse and review the police's action plan.

Malik said while addressing a press conference in Ahmedabad, "Along with more than 7,000 police personnel, we will deploy nearly 4,000 home guards to secure the stadium and to maintain law and order in communally sensitive areas of the city during the match. In addition to these personnel, we will deploy three 'hit teams' and one anti-drone team of the NSG. Nine teams of our bomb detection and disposal squad will also be utilised."

"Apart from 13 companies of the state reserve police (SRP), we will deploy three companies of Rapid Action Force as part of our security setup. The RAF will keep a watch on communally sensitive areas of the city. To help people in case of a stampede, we have already prepared an evacuation plan and rehearsals are also going on at the stadium," Malik further claimed.
