India were in a soup early on while chasing 200 as they had lost three quick wickets but Virat Kohli and KL Rahul added 165 runs for the fourth wicket to rescue the hosts. Ravindra Jadeja (3 for 28), Kuldeep Yadav (2 for 42) and Jasprit Bumrah (2 for 35) led the charge with the ball before Virat Kohli (85) and KL Rahul (97 not out) constructed a partnership to take India home.</p>

<p>Kohli and Rahul joined forces with India struggling at 2 for 3 before the duo added an impressive 165-run fourth-wicket stand to take India out of troubled waters and steer them to an easy win, with 52 balls remaining. <p>1996 champions Sri Lanka were tasked to chase a record total of 429 runs as batters scored runs left, right, and centre. Chasing the target, Sri Lanka lost Pathum Nissanka (0) in the first over, putting a spanner in the work while Kusal Perera (7) was also judged LBW, but used the DRS to remain at the helm. Kusal Mendis (76) would then take charge of the side that qualified from the qualifiers. He along with Sadeera Samarawickrama (23) led the Lanka side to the triple-figure mark.</p>

<p>Interestingly, with the gap slipping away from Sri Lanka Charith Asalanka (79) played an important role as he helped his side steer past 200. Later in the innings, skipper Dasun Shanaka (68) played a handy knock along with Dasun Shanaka (33) to help Sri Lanka reduce the deposit of the defeat. It was a valiant effort by Lanka, despite them chasing a mountainous 429 runs in the hot conditions of Delhi.</p>

<p>Gerald Coetzee was the pick of the bowlers with three wickets while the trio of Marco Jansen, Kagiso Rabada, and Keshav Maharaj ended with two scalps each.</p>

ODI World Cup 2023: South Africa see off valiant Sri Lanka in record-breaking outing, win by 102 runs in Delhi

<p>Sri Lanka lost their opening game of the ODI World Cup 2023 by 102 runs against South Africa on October 7 in Delhi. The match saw 754 runs being smacked in 94.5 overs and the bowlers from both sides took some hammering. While Quinton de Kock, Rassie van der Dussen and Aiden Markram scored tons for Proteas, Sri Lankan innings saw gritty fifties from Kusal Mendis, Charith Asalanka and skipper Dasun Shanaka.</p>

<p>There were total 31 sixes hit in the game - 14 from South Africa and 17 from Sri Lanka but none was better than the one hit by Sri Lanka bowler Kasun Rajitha off Marco Jansen in the 43rd over of the chase. The match was already done and dusted with Sri Lanka eight wickets down for 312 runs but Rajitha had taken a liking to Jansen.</p>

Bangladesh initially restricted Afghanistan to 156 in 37.2 overs where skipper Shakib also notched three wickets. Rahmanullah Gurbaz was the top scorer for Afghanistan with 47 runs with only four other players getting into double figures.</p>

The win was Bangladesh’s third on Indian soil, the first since 2006 when they beat Zimbabwe by 101 runs in a triangular series.</p>

<p>Bangladesh will next take on defending champions England on Tuesday (Oct 10) at the same venue in Dharamsala. Bangladesh will look to repeat the heroics of 2015 when they got the better of England in the league stage contest. England will look to bounce back from their opening-day defeat to New Zealand, where they were beaten comprehensively by nine wickets.</p>

<p>Pakistan beat Netherlands by 81 runs in the ODI World Cup 2023 on October 6 in Hyderabad to start their campaign with a win. The victory was more hard fought than the 81-run margin suggests and the credit goes to Pakistan bowlers for taking their team home, especially Haris Rauf.</p>

It was a length ball from Rauf which came back in, missed the bat and hit the leg-stump, uprooting it and making it cartwheel as the bowler erupted in jubilation. <p>Chasing 287, Netherlands were in a decent situation with 120/2 in the 24th over before Shadab Khan got opener Vikramjit Singh (52) out. Rauf's double-wicket over shortly after put Pakistan on top and they made no mistakes after that. Netherlands' Bas de Leede continued to fight in the face of falling wickets, scoring 67 off 68 but didn't get the support from the other end.</p>

<p>Earlier, Pakistan were in a soup after losing the toss and batting first as they lost three wickets for 38 inside 10 overs including skipper Babar Azam. Saud Shakeel and Mohammad Rizwan, who both scored 68, then added 120 runs for the fourth wicket to provide some stability to Pak innings.</p>

<p>Bas de Leede then bowled a double-wicket over to rattle Pakistan but handy knocks by Shadab Khan (32) and Mohammad Nawaz (39) kept them in the game. de Leede returned once more and took two more wickets in one over again as Pakistan crossed 250 with two more wickets left.</p>

<p>Some lower hitting afterwards got Men in Green to 286 as they got bowled out in 49 overs - around 25 more than Netherlands would have liked to chase.</p>

<p>Finch feels Ishan, on the other hand, is slightly vulnerable at the start and has technical faults, which the Aussie pacers would like to exploit on Sunday.</p>

<p>In this regard, he added, "Australia will be a little more comfortable bowling to Ishan Kishan in the Powerplay. Starc and Hazelwood. I would go with that selection if I have to bowl to the left-hander. The outswing to Ishan because I still think he has a few technical faults he still hasn't quite ironed out over the last while. <p>The ODI World Cup 2023 edition kicked off on Thursday (October 5) with the defending champions England taking on New Zealand in Ahmedabad. On Friday (October 6), Babar Azam-led Pakistan will face the Netherlands at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad. Ahead of the clash, Dav Whatmore -- Sri Lanka's ODI World Cup-winning coach and former Australian cricketer -- pointed out that the Men in Green need to improve in the fielding department in order to progress ahead in the marquee competition in India.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Speaking to Wion, Whatmore opined on how Pakistan is shaping up for the 50-over showpiece event. Pakistan enter the CWC '23 edition on the back of a disastrous run in the Asia Cup and two back-to-back defeats in the warm-up games. However, the No. 2 ranked ODI side is backed as one of the strongest contenders due to the subcontinental conditions and a well-oiled side.</p>

<p>Whatmore reflected on their warm-up losses and stated, "Look, they should have won that game (versus New Zealand in the warm-ups). But it is at the same ground where they open up their campaign versus the Netherlands (in Hyderabad). Anybody would argue the fact that they will win. They should win comfortably tomorrow. I think they lost a bit of confidence versus New Zealand. Against Australia in their second warm-up match, they whacked them over the park. Australia allowed them to come close with their bowling effort (Pakistan managed 337 in pursuit of 352). Hence, confidence would have been jolted a bit. But, they should do well tomorrow which will lift their confidence."</p>

<p>The former SL coach mentioned the area of concern for Babar &amp; Co. In this regard, he asserted, "Their fielding historically has never been up to the mark. They have been guilty of some bad pictures of fielding. That department of the game can improve surely. On the batting, they have done well. They have got over 300 in both practice games. They fell short versus the Kiwis and had some easy bowling to hit versus the Aussies but their batting is not too good. They know their roles and if they get good starts, they have a good platform to really launch in the last ten overs -- like every other team."</p>

<p>Pakistan were extremely poor in the field versus the Aussies in their last warm-up encounter in Hyderabad. They will like to start afresh in their tournament-opener versus the Dutch on Friday.&nbsp;</p>

Defending champions England are all set to take on 2015 and 2019 runners up New Zealand in the opening game of ODI World Cup 2023 on October 5. While Ben Stokes is making a comeback for England in ODIs for the quadrennial event, Kiwis will be without their regular skipper Kane Williamson. Nonetheless, there are enough match-winners on each side and here are some top players to watch out for in the game between 2019's finalists.

<p>Defending champions England take on New Zealand in the opening game of the Cricket World Cup on Thursday at the start of a marathon tournament which could dictate the event's place in the future of the sport.</p>

<p>With the explosion of Twenty20 cricket both in global events and lucrative franchises, the prospects of the 50-over game have been clouded in uncertainty.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Now, the format is facing the biggest crisis of confidence in its 52-year history.</p>

<p>"We believe strongly that ODIs should be World Cups only," Mark Nicholas, the new president of the MCC, the body responsible for the laws of the game, told ESPNcricinfo.</p>

<p>"We think it's difficult bilaterally now to justify them. They're not filling grounds in a lot of countries. And there is a power at the moment to T20 cricket that is almost supernatural."</p>

<p>He added: "In a free market, the most money wins. And that's just the end-game."</p>

<p>The 50-over format is viewed as too pedestrian in the slipstream of the high velocity, smash-and-grab Twenty20.</p>

<p>"The ODI has been reduced to virtually depending on a World Cup year for its importance," wrote former Australia captain Ian Chappell.</p>

<p>This year's World Cup has only 10 teams but will take 45 days to complete.</p>

<p>The Twenty20 World Cup in the United States and West Indies in 2024 will see 20 nations compete in an event condensed into four weeks.</p>

<p>Furthermore, the short-form game is widely expected to be voted in as an Olympic sport for 2028 next week.</p>

<p>New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson, however, sees room for T20 and 50-over cricket to co-exist.</p>

<p>"The ODI World Cup is definitely one of the top events that we can play and be involved in," he said.</p>

<p>Meanwhile, England skipper Jos Buttler, who leads his side into action at the world's biggest cricket arena, the 132,000-capacity Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Thursday, says his team is under no pressure to retain the title.</p>

<p>"We are not feeling like we're defending anything," he said.</p>

<p>"We're all starting in the same place and have big dreams and ambitions of going all the way."</p>

<h2>Stokes injury</h2>

<p>England are set to be without superstar batsman Ben Stokes for the game due to a hip injury.</p>

<p>New Zealand, runners-up at the last two World Cups, are missing Williamson, still recovering from a knee injury.</p>

<p>"Fingers crossed he's on the park sooner rather than later," said stand-in captain Tom Latham.</p>

<p>Veteran seamer Tim Southee is also sidelined, yet to recover from a dislocated thumb.</p>

<p>The tournament sees Pakistan visiting India for the first time in seven years after an intense spell of brinkmanship which almost saw them boycott the World Cup.</p>

<p>Babar Azam's team only received visas two days before they were due to arrive at their base in Hyderabad where their first warm-up game was played behind closed doors.</p>

<p>Security fears over their blockbuster clash with bitter rivals India next week meant the game was brought forward a day.</p>

<p>That in turn caused a domino effect of nine rescheduled matches in total.</p>

<p>"I think the way people are responding towards our team, everyone enjoyed it. We are a week in Hyderabad so it is not like we are in India, it is like we are home," said Azam on his first trip to the country.</p>

<h2>'Half the world watching'</h2>

<p>Despite the troubled build-up, even opposing skippers are looking forward to the October 14 epic between the two rivals.</p>

<p>"I don't think there's too many events around the world where you feel like half the world's tuning in to watch whenever India play Pakistan in a World Cup," said Australia skipper Pat Cummins.</p>

<p>India were champions the last time the tournament was staged on the sub-continent in 2011.</p>

<p>With the Asia Cup recently secured and with the likes of superstar batsman Virat Kohli, who is just three centuries short of 50 in the ODI format, in their ranks, India are one of the major favourites to win a third title.</p>

<p>However, Australia, with the senior batting skills of David Warner and Steve Smith to call upon, will also be in the mix for a sixth world title.</p>

<p>Under the tournament format, all 10 teams play each other once with the top four heading for the semi-finals.</p>

<p>The final takes place in Ahmedabad on November 19.</p>

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), however, hadn't announced a formal plan for the ceremony, but there were reports doing rounds of some famous artists going to perform after the Captains' Day event.</p>

<p>The International Cricket Council (ICC) held&nbsp;the Captains' Day on the eve of the ODI World Cup 2023 which starts October 5 in Ahmedabad. But there are no plans for an opening ceremony contrary to previous reports. It was claimed by a section of media that a star-studded line-up of Ranveer Singh, Arijit Singh, Tamannaah Bhatia, Shreya Ghoshal, and Asha Bhosle would perform to mark the beginning of the tournament with fireworks and a laser show display as well. There is, however, neither confirmation nor a cancellation announcement on the opening ceremony by the BCCI.</p>

<p>After the three ODIs, which India won 2-1, Ashwin replaced Axar in the CWC '23 final 15 as the latter is still recovering after&nbsp;the quadriceps strain. Now, former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly has backed the decision and feels Ashwin is the right choice to replace Axar.</p>

<p>Talking to India Today, Ganguly said, "He is an outstanding spinner. He is probably the best off-spinner in the world. And also, he is the best spinner in India. I always think that in this format specialist is very important in this format. It’s a very good decision. Maybe it is a coincidence as Axar Patel was out for injury. But I think it's a very good decision."</p>

<p>Ashwin is a veteran of 115 ODIs and has accounted for 155 wickets. He was part of India's victorious run in the 2011 ODI World Cup, co-hosted by India. Thus, his experience will come in handy for Rohit Sharma &amp; Co. as they look to replicate the 2011 success and also end India's ten-year-long ICC title drought.</p>
