On Sunday (Oct 15), Afghanistan beat world champions England by 69 runs in match 13 of the ICC ODI World Cup 2023 edition to pull off a huge upset at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi. With this win, the Afghans remain in the top six whereas Australia -- who are the five-time winners -- have now hit rock bottom and are at the tenth spot in the updated points table. Meanwhile, England are in fifth place but have lots of concerns going ahead.

Talking about the England-Afghanistan match, England elected to bowl first. The Afghans rode on opener Rahmanullah Gurbaz's solid 80, Ikram Alikhil's 58 and cameos from Rashid Khan and Mujeeb Ur Rahman to post a challenging 284 in 49.5 overs. Many expected England's batting depth to see them through but Mujeeb had other plans as his 3 for 51 along with Rashid's three-fer, and regular breakthroughs from others, ensured England remained behind and eventually succumbed to a 69-run loss; being dismissed for 215 in 40.3 overs.

After Afghanistan's famous win, former England captain Michael Atherton slammed Jos Buttler & Co. and feels the team has many 'undercooked' players. "England haven't bowled well enough and teams have got off to fliers against them. There are reasons. Many of the players are undercooked in terms of cricketing time, time in ODIs. But they have not hit the ground running and have made things very difficult for themselves now," Atherton said on Sky Sports.

Atherton further lauded the Afghans and said, "They outplayed England - it wasn't as if they won on a desperate turning pitch that suited their spinners. It was the greatest night in Afghanistan's history and they won fair and square."

With this defeat, England are in the top five (fifth) but now have two losses from three outings whereas Afghanistan are in the sixth spot. CWC '23: 'Many players are undercooked' - Former cricketer slams England after big defeat vs Afghanistan

Spectators gathered at the Ekana Stadium in Lucknow to watch the Australia vs Sri Lanka World Cup match were forced to scurry around the stands to secure a safe place after hoardings attached to the roof were uprooted and fell down after a dust storm swept across the area.

The incident transpired in the 43rd over of the Sri Lankan innings when the Australian bowlers were quietly applying the chokehold. Images and videos of the incident showed the fans running from the spot as the hoardings were swept away by the powerful wind.

The match had to be momentarily paused by the umpires as the players found it difficult to play in the conditions. The low turnout at the stadium, in fact, turned out to be a blessing in disguise as the fans were able to quickly move away from the impact spot.

The stadium camera also showed Australian players Steve Smith and Glenn Maxwell looking at the incident from afar with shock. Fortunately, none of the spectators were injured.

World Cup 2023, WATCH: 'Fans could've been hurt...'- Hoardings fall into stands during Aus vs SL match

Controversy erupted during the Australia vs Sri Lanka World Cup encounter in Lucknow when pacer Mitchell Starc attempted a runout on the non-striker's end at the very start of the match - a mode of dismissal that is rather antithetical to the Australian way of playing the game.

Bowling the opening over of the innings, Starc had an unsuccessful LBW review on the first ball. By the time the fuming left-arm pacer came around to bowl the fourth ball, he stopped in his delivery stride and issued a warning to non-striker Kusal Perera to not leave his crease.

According to commentator Nasser Hussain, Starc had issued the warning after the first ball when he had a little chat with the umpire.

“After the first ball Starc had a little word with the umpire, Kusal Perera just leaving his crease... he was saying to Kusal Perera ‘don’t leave your crease’,” Nasser Hussain said.

“That’s fair enough, he’s told the umpire now he’s told the batter, stay in your crease at that end... a very eventful first over," added Hussain.

Controversy erupted during the Australia vs Sri Lanka World Cup encounter in Lucknow when pacer Mitchell Starc attempted a runout on the non-striker's end at the very start of the match - a mode of dismissal that is rather antithetical to the Australian way of playing the game.

World Cup 2023: Mitchell Starc threatens runout at non-striker's end to Sri Lankan batter - WATCH

Rohit Sharma-led Team India have been in top form in the home ODI World Cup. After three games, India have equal number of wins and will lock horns with Bangladesh on Thursday (Oct 19) in Pune. On Saturday (Oct 14), India met Pakistan at the Narendra Modi Cricket Stadium in Ahmedabad and demolished their arch-rivals by seven wickets, and 117 balls to spare.

With this win, India are atop in the points table and marching ahead with high chances of entering the semi-finals in the top-two. Rashid Latif, former Pakistan captain, lauded India's ace spinner Kuldeep Yadav after the Men in Blue's easy win over his national side and predicted the 29-year-old Kuldeep to end as the highest wicket-taker of the ongoing edition.

Latif feels Babar Azam-led Pakistani batters weren't aggressive against Kuldeep and only tried to play out his overs in Ahmedabad. Writing in his column for The Indian Express, he said, "Against Kuldeep, we looked timid, we were trying to just play out his ten overs. Not a single Pakistan batsman was able to pick Kuldeep (Yadav), and I think if he is not rested in a few matches, Kuldeep will end up being the leading wicket-taker of the tournament."

At the moment, Kuldeep has five wickets (third-most by an Indian) and occupies the sixth spot in the leading wicket-taker list. Jasprit Bumrah leads the overall chart with eight wickets, who was also the Player-of-the-Match versus Pakistan for his 2 for 19, whereas Ravindra Jadeja also features in the top five (fifth) with equal number of scalps as Kuldeep.

Latif, however, feels India should play R Ashwin in every game. Ashwin, who was selected in the World Cup squad at the last minute after Axar Patel's injury, played versus Australia but has warmed the bench in the next two games. "I was surprised that India didn’t pick Ashwin. I feel he should play all the matches for India. If Ashwin had played I don’t think we could have even got 190 on the board,” Latif added.

India will look to maintain their winning run when they lock horns with the Bangla Tigers on Thursday.

Kuldeep Yadav will end as ODI World Cup 2023's highest wicket-taker, predicts former Pakistan captain

It may have taken 10 days but the ODI World Cup in India has its first 'upset' - one that will be cherished by the whole of Afghanistan for years to come, especially in light of recent devastating events. Afghanistan, playing a near-perfect game, pinned defending champions England on the mat to win the contest by 69 runs in front of a vociferous Afghan-supporting crowd gathered at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi.

Fine bowling performances from Mujeeb Ur Rahman, Mohammad Nabi and Rashid Khan ensured that England never really got a whiff of victory, chasing a challenging target of 285. Fazalhaq Farooqi struck first upfront when he trapped Jonny Bairstow in front of the stumps before Mujeeb weaved his magic to send danger man Joe Root (11) back to the hut.

Harry Brook (66), who parachuted into the World Cup squad at the eleventh hour, was the sole man who fought against the Afghan attack but could not make it count as he succumbed under pressure as well. Mujeeb, brought in for a new spell, extracted some turn from the pitch and got the Englishman's outside edge which was snaffled up with utmost glee by Ikram, behind the sticks.

For England, it was a continuation of poor planning, inability to adapt to the wicket and deviating from the strategy that had brought them great success over the last few years. The champions repeated the mistakes of the first match against New Zealand where they played timidly and were made to eat the humble pie.

While most might term it an 'upset', it feels a disservice to Afghanistan to dub their victory one - for they had been knocking on the door to produce such a performance against one of the top teams for some time. Even India in the previous game had to bring their A-game to get over the line, though the scoreboard might suggest otherwise.

Afghanistan's flying start, collapse and rebuild

Asked to bat first on a rather belter of a Delhi pitch, Afghanistan batters were off the block in a flying manner. Both English opening bowlers, Reece Topley and Chris Woakes failed to hit their mark and were duly punished by the pair of Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran. The former was particularly severe as he manoeuvred the white ball around the turf with a composed yet deadly technique.

Consequently, Afghanistan raced to 79 in the first 10 overs and looked unstoppable for a big score. Things went downhill quite quickly though. Ibrahim Zadran was the first to go and Rahmat Shah didn't last long. Gurbaz, who was looking so good, was tragically run out the very next ball for 80.

The wickets continued to fall as Afghanistan slumped from 114/0 to 190/6 in no time. Adil Rashid, Joe Root and Liam Livingstone - all three English spinners spun a web around the Afghan batters and reaped rich dividends for it. Just when it looked like Afghanistan's innings might come to a tame end, Ikram Alikhil put his hand up and stitched a little partnership with Rashid Khan to take his team to a respectable total of 284, which, in hindsight, proved to be enough.

The defeat leaves England to do some intense soul-searching as the side looks devoid of ideas and aggression on the field - two tenets which dictated their maverick 2019 World Cup campaign.

Afghanistan's flying start, collapse and rebuild Asked to bat first on a rather belter of a Delhi pitch, Afghanistan batters were off the block in a flying manner. World Cup 2023: Former Indian cricketer wants England to play Ben Stokes even if he's not fully fit

England are not off to a great start in the ODI World Cup 2023 edition, being held in India. The Jos Buttler-led defending champions lost to Afghanistan in match 13 on Sunday (Oct 15) at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, New Delhi and have now conceded two out of their three games so far.

Opting to bowl first, England bowlers weren't on the money as Afghanistan rode on opener Rahmanullah Gurbaz's 80 and Ikram Alikhil's 58 and cameos from Rashid Khan and Mujeeb Ur Rahman to post a challenging 284 in 49.5 overs. In reply, England were bundled out for 215 in 40.3 overs as the Asian side pulled off a huge upset. Despite the shocking loss, former England captain Michael Vaughan remains optimistic of his national side reaching the semi-finals in the ongoing edition.

Taking to X, formerly known as Twitter, Vaughan issued a bold claim and said, "England in the World Cup semis." Reacting to Vaughan's viral post on the microblogging site, former Indian opener Virender Sehwag reminded the Englishman of his national team's forgettable record in 50-over World Cups, where they have not made it to the semis in 1996, 1999, 2003, 2007, 2011, 2015 and also added 2023.

“Not in 1996, 1999, 2003, 2007, 2011, 2015 and 2023. Just one in 8 attempts,” Sehwag trolled Vaughan on X.

Not in 1996 , 1999, 2003, 2007, 2011, 2015 and 2023 . Just one in 8 attempts. https://t.co/VeB0rBZt8O — Virender Sehwag (@virendersehwag) October 16, 2023 × Also read: Official! T20 cricket included in roster for 2028 Los Angeles Olympics after IOC voting Earlier, Sehwag had mentioned that England and Australia, five-time winners, might be make it to the last four. "Looks like Eng and Aus are going to struggle to reach the top 4. #ENGvsAFG," Sehwag had stated. Pat Cummins-led Australia are yet to get off the mark in the ten-team tournament with two heavy defeats on the trot. 'Just one in 8 attempts': Sehwag gives EPIC reply to Vaughan's 'England in World Cup semis' remark

India's Hardik Pandya provided the home team much needed breakthrough with the wicket of Imam-ul-Haq when Pakistan was cruising along in the ODI World Cup 2023 match in Ahmedabad on October 14. Pandya brought balance to India's side with the wicket of Imam who was batting beautifully on 36 off 38.

It was the third ball of the 13th over and Pandya had been hit for a four on the previous ball, but bowled the next one a touch fuller. It was well outside off and Imam attempted to drive the ball. All the batter could manage was get an outside edge which wicketkeeper KL Rahul pouched easily.

After the wicket, Pandya waved bye at Imam and said a few words. Have a look at the video here:

ODI World Cup, 2023, IND vs PAK: WATCH | Hardik Pandya's SEND-OFF to Imam-ul-Haq goes viral

On Sunday (Oct 15), defending champions England lost to Afghanistan by 69 runs in match 13 of the ICC ODI World Cup 2023 edition at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi. Opting to bowl first, Jos Buttler-led England didn't start well as Afghanistan rode on opener Rahmanullah Gurbaz's 80 and Ikram Alikhil's 58 and cameos from Rashid Khan and Mujeeb Ur Rahman to post a challenging 284 in 49.5 overs. In reply, England only managed 215 in 40.3 overs as the Asian side pulled off a huge upset.

With this defeat, England have now lost two in three games in the CWC 2023 edition. While they still remain in the top five (fifth), their journey won't be easy going ahead. Courtesy of a loss to the Afghans, the 2019 winners also registered an unwanted record. England have now become the first team to lose to all 11 Test-playing nations in the history of ODI World Cups.

ENGLAND FIRST TO LOSE TO ALL TEST-PLAYING NATIONS

In their ODI World Cup history, England have lost to Australia, India, West Indies, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, New Zealand, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Ireland, Afghanistan and Bangladesh. They lost their first game to arch-rivals Australia in 1975 before losing the 1979 World Cup final to West Indies. Their first defeat to India and Pakistan came in 1983 and 1987, respectively. The likes of New Zealand and South Africa achieved their first win over England in 1992 and 1996, respectively.

In 1992, Zimbabwe also thrashed England whereas Sri Lanka won their maiden World Cup encounter over the English line-up in 1996.

Ireland and Bangladesh attained their first-ever World Cup wins over England in the 2011 edition before Afghanistan joined the party in the ongoing edition.

At the post-match presentation, Buttler said, "Disappointing to win the toss and concede that many, me missing that first ball down the leg side set the tone. Credit to Afghanistan, they outplayed us today. It came down to execution, we weren’t quite at the level we’d like to be with both bat and ball. On Sunday (Oct 15), defending champions England lost to Afghanistan by 69 runs in match 13 of the ICC ODI World Cup 2023 edition at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi.

ENGLAND FIRST TO LOSE TO ALL TEST-PLAYING NATIONS In their ODI World Cup history, England have lost to Australia, India, West Indies, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, New Zealand, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Ireland, Afghanistan and Bangladesh. They have some fantastic bowlers, the dew didn’t come in as much as we expected, the ball held up a bit too. They bowled dead straight and kept the stumps in play, we just weren’t quite good enough. ODI World Cup 2023: Afghanistan's English coach Jonathan Trott ready for England battle

India skipper Rohit Sharma played a brilliant knock of 86 runs off just 63 ball as India beat Pakistan by seven wickets in the ODI World Cup 2023 on October 14 in Ahmedabad. The innings saw Rohit hitting six fours and six sixes and three off them came against Haris Rauf - one of the fastest bowlers in the tournament.

Out of the three sixes Rohit hit to Rauf, two came in one over — one over mid-on on a length ball and second a slice on the off side on a full ball in the ninth over of the innings. Rohit completed his fifty off just 36 balls and was asked by on-field umpire Murray Erasmus that how does he hit such big sixes.

Rohit, being witty, showed the umpires his muscles and the moment was captured during the live broadcast as well. After the game, Sharma's deputy Hardik Pandya asked Rohit about the gesture to which the skipper replied: "The umpire asked me about how am I able to hit such big sixes. Is there anything in your bat? So, I told him all the power is in muscles," laughed Rohit.

Rohit was batting beautifully before being done by a slower one from Shaheen Afridi as he got out with India just 36 runs short of the 192-run target. Talking about his batting, Rohit acknowledged that he missed out on a hundred.

"I just wanted to play my shots. I have been trying to play like this since last couple of years and the wicket was good so I just wanted to play the shots. I know I missed out on a hundred," added Rohit.

The Indian skipper now has 303 sixes to his name in 246 innings of 254 ODIs he has played, with only West Indies' Chris Gayle (331) and Pakistan's Shahid Afridi (351) ahead of him.
ODI World Cup 2023: Sachin Tendulkar TROLLS Shoaib Akhtar after India thrash Pakistan

Former Pakistan skipper Wasim Akram wasn't too happy with current skipper Babar Azam accepting Indian batter Virat Kohli's jersey after losing ODI World Cup 2023 game. Pakistan lost the game by seven wickets on October 14 in Ahmedabad, their eighth consecutive defeat against India in ODI World Cup history.

“That’s what I exactly said when I saw the picture [getting the shirts publicly, not privately],” Akram said after a fan pointed out the same on A Sports, a sports channel in Pakistan.

The comments come after Virat gifted Babar Azam his signed jersey. The act of Babar clearly didn't go down well with Akram who said: “Today (match day) was not the day to do this. If you want to do it – If your uncle’s son has asked you to get Kohli’s shirt – then do it after the game in the dressing room (not verbatim),” Akram further said.

The highly-anticipated clash between the arch-rivals turned out to be a bit anti-climatic after Pakistan suffered a dramatic collapse to get all out on 191 despite being 155/2 at one point.
Needing early wickets to stay in the game, Pakistan attack was blunted by returning Shubman Gill who scored a brisk 16 off 11 out of first 23 runs. Virat Kohli then joined forces with Rohit and the duo added 56 runs for the second wicket. Rohit and Shreyas Iyer then took the game away from Pakistan after Kohli's fall, adding 77 runs for the fourth wicket.

Iyer, who also returned to form with unbeaten 53, along with Kl Rahul (19 not out) took India home in 30.1 overs without losing anymore wickets.

ODI World Cup 2023: India bowler Jasprit Bumrah reveals reason behind his 'temple point' celebration

India continued their dominance over Pakistan in the ODI World Cups with a seven-wicket win over arch-rivals on October 14 in Ahmedabad. The highly-anticipated match turned out to be a bit anti-climatic after Pakistan suffered a collapse to get all out on 191 despite being 155/2 at one point.

Former Pakistan player and 1992 World Cup winner Ramiz Raja wasn't too happy with Babar Azam's team and blasted them for not being able to compete. Ramiz made the comments on The ICC Review podcast after Pakistan's eighth successive loss against India in the ODI World Cup history.

ODI World Cup 2023: India skipper Rohit Sharma doesn't want to get TOO EXCITED with win against Pakistan

Pakistan men's cricket team director Mickey Arthur was not a happy man after his team's abject surrender against arch rivals India at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad during the World Cup encounter. World Cup 2023: 'Didn't hear Dil Dil Pakistan...', Pakistan's Mickey Arthur slams BCCI in bizarre manner

The Men in Blue are firing on all cylinders in the ongoing ODI World Cup as they beat Pakistan by seven wickets on Saturday (Oct 14) at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. Rohit Sharma was the architect of the win having scored 86 runs while Shreyas Iyer scored an unbeaten 53. Speaking on the dominating win, WION’s cricket expert Dav Whatmore thinks Team India will be a team to beat if they continue their purple patch.

‘India playing like champions’

“The way India are playing, they already look like world champions with them being in top form. Any side in this World Cup will be scared of them as they have a perfect record so far. New Zealand can match their pace, but I don’t think there is anyone who can match the intensity and substance this Indian team possesses. Rohit Sharma has been in great touch despite getting out for a duck in the opening match against Australia,” WION’s in-house cricket expert Dav Whatmore said.

Helped by Rohit Sharma’s knock, the Men in Blue have extended their winning streak to 8-0 after another dominant display in the ODI World Cup at the Narendra Modi Stadium. The seven-wicket win also sees India maintain their perfect start to the ODI World Cup as they have won all their three matches while Pakistan suffered their first defeat of the tournament.

“The way Rohit is playing it looks like he is continuing from where he left in 2019. He has unfinished business in the World Cup and I think his 86-run knock today is the perfect demonstration of what India can do.”

“The bowling unit has been in great touch as well with all five bowlers coming good against a Pakistan side that chased a record total against Sri Lanka. Now what I want to see is whether can India defend the total or not because that is where their bowling attack will be tested,” Whatmore added.

ODI World Cup 2023, IND vs PAK: 'Have some impact with..,' Ricky Ponting reveals how Pakistan can win vs India

Former India captain Virat Kohli could not stay away from the headlines on Saturday (Oct 14) against Pakistan in the high-voltage World Cup contest as he attracted the attention of the internet. Playing against the arch-rivals at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, Virat had to leave the field just moments after the match started. However he was back on the field moments later, but made the headlines on the internet.

Why did Virat leave the field?

Virat initially started the match with a full-sleeved t-shirt with white stripes on the shoulders. He wore the kit during the national anthem and start of the match unaware of the new kit change. The rest of the team was wearing kits with tri-colour strips of the Indian flag with Virat being the exception. However, that mistake was brought into his consideration, and quickly went into the dressing room for a change. He would then wear the tri-colour striped t-shirt to match his teammates with India fielding first in the contest.

What happened in the Pakistan innings?

After winning the toss, India skipper Rohit Sharma put Pakistan to bat despite history suggesting the hosts have a better advantage batting first. The Indian team made one change for the match as in-form Shubman Gill returned to the team after recuperating from dengue while Ishan Kishan was dropped from the Playing XI.

Pakistan started their innings brightly with Imam-ul-Haq (36) and Abdullah Shafique (20) as they demonstrated Pakistan’s batting show. However, India would quickly come back in the match with quick-fire wickets to unsettle Pakistan at the Narendra Modi Stadium. At the time of writing, Pakistan were 187/8 after 40 overs as they lost wickets at regular intervals.

Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, and Kuldeep Yadav each got two wickets while the likes of Babar Azam (50) and Mohammad Rizwan (49) were the only other batters to get into double figures in the Pakistan innings.

This is the eighth meeting between the sides in the ODI World Cup and only the second occasion when Pakistan are batting first. The only other occasion when Pakistan batted first in the ODI World Cup contest was in 2003 when they lost by six wickets in Centurion. India currently hold an unprecedented 7-0 lead against Pakistan in the ODI World Cup head-to-head matches.

ODI World Cup 2023: Virat Kohli leaves field for THIS hilarious reason vs Pakistan

India skipper Rohit Sharma played down their supremacy over Pakistan in the ODI World Cup ahead of the marquee clash. Rohit, talking to the press on the eve of India vs Pakistan in ODI World Cup 2023, said that we, as a team, should pay attention to the fresh day.

"I don't think it [7-0 record against Pakistan in World Cups] is a psychological advantage. Because you have to play good cricket every day. So, it's important for us as a team that we, as I said, should not pay too much attention to what is already over. And, we should also pay attention to the fresh day, the fresh opposition," said Rohit.

Rohit also said that both the team will start evenly and that there's no favorite or underdog in the match.

"Both the teams will start evenly. I don't think there is a favourite or an underdog. Both the teams are equal before they go into the game. It's just about handling the pressure, dictating terms," added the Indian skipper.

Rohit, however, agreed that it's a massive game but they (India) are focussing on playing against the opposition which is quality.

"Like I said many times before, in the context of it, yes, it's a massive game. But for us, what is important is, we are playing an opposition tomorrow, which will be quality. So, we've just got to come against a quality opposition and play good cricket, which we've done in the last two games. And hopefully we can again show some consistency in our performance and play a good game of cricket," said Rohit.

Pakistan skipper Babar Azam, when asked about India's 7-0 streak against them, said that 'are streaks are meant to be broken.'

"All these streaks are made to be broken. God willing, we will try to give our best tomorrow. Anything can happen on the day. I fully believe my team has done well in the first three matches, and will continue doing so in the coming matches," he said.

ODI World Cup 2023: 'No psychological advantage,' says India skipper Rohit Sharma about 7-0 record vs Pakistan

The ODI World Cup has taken the cricketing world by storm as South Africa and Australia served a treat in a blockbuster contest on Thursday (Oct 12) in Lucknow. While South Africa won by 134 runs to condemn Australia to back-to-back defeats in the tournament, it was the Marcus Stoinis dismissal that caught the eye for a controversial dismissal. Third umpire Richard Kettleborough has now caught the eyes of the sports fans while his fellow English football official Darren England was in hot water for disallowing a Liverpool goal in the Premier League.

What was the controversy?

On the second ball of the 18th over, Stoinis was dismissed caught behind on the bowling of Kagiso Rabada with Quinton de Kock taking a fantastic low catch. However, he was initially given not out by the on-field umpire Joel Wilson as his bottom hand was not in contact with the bat where the ball had struck. Going by the rule books, if the hand is not in contact with the bat and the ball makes contact with it the batter is deemed not out.

However, South Africa opted for review where third umpire Kettleborough deemed that one hand was in contact with the other with the same in contact with the bat, but that close contact was minimal which was hard to trace from the naked eye. Upon review though Kettleborough decided to give Stoinis out that condemned Australia to 70/6.

Recently, English football official Darren England made headlines when he decided to disallow a Liverpool goal. Liverpool attacker Luis Diaz was onside but the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) failed to overturn the decision. This sparked a huge debate in the Premier League, leading to the suspension of the officials. The English football governing body Football Association (FA) was put under the scanner as they were criticised for the failure to deliver a right verdict.

What happened in the match?

South Africa got the better of Australia in the traditional World Cup rivalry with De Kock being the centre of attraction. He smashed back-to-back tons in the World Cup that saw the Proteas put 311/7 on the board. Aiden Markram was also on the show as he put on 56 runs with the bat while Kagiso Rabada scalped four wickets with the ball. Australia showed little resistance with the bat as they were bowled out for 177 with Marnus Labuschagne top-scoring with 46.

South Africa will next take on qualifiers Netherlands in their next match on Tuesday (Oct 17) in Dharamshala while Australia will look to bounce back having lost back-to-back World Cup games. They will take on former champions Sri Lanka on Monday, who in turn have lost their opening two matches at the marquee event.

Marcus Stoinis dismissal sparks debate on review system in ODI World Cup, refreshes Liverpool VAR controversy

Rohit Sharma-led India demolished Afghanistan by eight wickets in match 9 of the ICC ODI World Cup 2023 edition on Thursday (Oct 11) at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi. Being asked to bowl first, India rode on Jasprit Bumrah's 4 for 39 but Afghanistan managed a healthy 272 for 8 courtesy of captain Hashmatullah Shahidi (80) and Azmatullah Omarzai (61). In reply, India closed the run-chase in 35 overs courtesy of Rohit's sublime 131 and Virat Kohli's unbeaten 55.

Rohit was at his best from the word go during the run-chase. Hitman started off with a flurry of boundaries and ended with an impressive 84-ball 131, laced with 16 fours and 5 sixes at a strike rate of 155.95. His knock led to India making light work of the run-chase, which could have been tricky had India lost early wickets. After the match, former Indian opener-turned-commentator Aakash Chopra hailed Rohit -- who now has the most ODI World Cup tons (seven) -- and feels he doesn't get enough credit despite being a beast in the ODI format.

Chopra told JioCinema, "My focus for the chase was purely on Ishan Kishan. I thought that he played decently, was not the best but tried to hold his own, while he let the captain do all the heavy lifting on the other end."

Rohit -- who also ended with the Player-of-the-Match award -- broke several records during his 131-run knock, including becoming the joint-fastest 1,000 runs in ODI World Cup history. After his inning, he said at the post-match presentation, "It was a good pitch to bat on, just backed myself to play my natural game. I knew once I got my eye in, the wicket was going to get easier for me. Something that I have been working on for a long time. It's a special feeling to get a World Cup hundred. CWC '23: 'Rohit is an ODI beast, does not...'- Chopra HAILS Hitman after India's easy win vs Afghanistan

India beat Afghanistan by eight wickets in pursuit of 273 in match 9 of the ICC ODI World Cup 2023 edition on Wednesday (Oct 11) at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, New Delhi. After losing the toss, India were asked to bowl first and rode on Jasprit Bumrah's 4 for 39, on a pitch akin for batters, as Afghanistan posted a healthy 272 for 8. The Afghans rode on their skipper Hasmatullah Shahidi's 80 and Azmatullah Omarzai (61) but could have scored much more, even more than 300, but Bumrah restricted the opposition with some stunning bowling and regular breakthroughs.

In reply, India completed the run-chase in a jiffy courtesy of Rohit Sharma's sublime 131 and Virat Kohli's 55 not out. Rohit ended as the Player-of-the-Match for his berserk knock, coming off 84 balls, but many also lauded Bumrah for his stellar show with the ball.

After the match, former Indian all-rounder Irfan Pathan, speaking to Star Sports, said, "You won't get a better bowler than him in the entire world. If you focus on his action, you will come to know how he uses his variations. India beat Afghanistan by eight wickets in pursuit of 273 in match 9 of the ICC ODI World Cup 2023 edition on Wednesday (Oct 11) at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, New Delhi.

He first sets up the batters with inswing, creates a cluster, and then bowls outswing without any change in action and deceives the batters." "A bowler who bowls at 140 kph, inswing and outswing at one spot, bouncers, slower ones, yorkers, you won't get anywhere. The angle from which he bowls, his pitch map will be outside the off stump. The ball will come in from there and can go away as well," Irfan further pointed out.
