But they have not hit the ground running and have made things very difficult for themselves now," Atherton said on Sky Sports.</p>

<p>Spectators gathered at the Ekana Stadium in Lucknow to watch the Australia vs Sri Lanka World Cup match were forced to scurry around the stands to secure a safe place after hoardings attached to the roof were uprooted and fell down after a dust storm swept across the area.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The incident transpired in the 43rd over of the Sri Lankan innings when the Australian bowlers were quietly applying the chokehold. Images and videos of the incident showed the fans running from the spot as the hoardings were swept away by the powerful wind.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The match had to be momentarily paused by the umpires as the players found it difficult to play in the conditions. The low turnout at the stadium, in fact, turned out to be a blessing in disguise as the fans were able to quickly move away from the impact spot.</p>

<p>The stadium camera also showed Australian players Steve Smith and Glenn Maxwell looking at the incident from afar with shock. Fortunately, none of the spectators were injured.</p>

World Cup 2023, WATCH: 'Fans could've been hurt...'- Hoardings fall into stands during Aus vs SL match

<p>Controversy erupted during the Australia vs Sri Lanka World Cup encounter in Lucknow when pacer Mitchell Starc attempted a runout on the non-striker's end at the very start of the match - a mode of dismissal that is rather antithetical to the Australian&nbsp;way of playing the game.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Bowling the opening over of the innings, Starc had an unsuccessful LBW review on the first ball. By the time the fuming left-arm pacer came around to bowl the fourth ball, he stopped in his delivery stride and issued a warning to non-striker Kusal Perera to not leave&nbsp;his crease.&nbsp;</p>

<p>According to commentator Nasser Hussain, Starc had issued the warning after the first ball when he had a little chat with the umpire.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“After the first ball Starc had a little word with the umpire, Kusal Perera just leaving his crease... he was saying to Kusal Perera ‘don’t leave your crease’,” Nasser Hussain said.</p>

<p>“That’s fair enough, he’s told the umpire now he’s told the batter, stay in your crease at that end... a very eventful first over," added Hussain.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Former Indian cricketer Irfan Pathan believes England should bring all-rounder Ben Stokes into the playing XI, even if he is not fully fit, at the ongoing World Cup in India.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Pathan's remarks come after England suffered a morale-downing defeat against Afghanistan on Sunday (Oct 15) where the team sorely missed someone like Stokes to steer the ship when things went south.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Bring in Ben Stokes even if he is 99 per cent&nbsp;fit. You need him. You brought him for his experience. They won't have a chance to come back if they lose the next match. It won't happen every time," said Pathan.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Pathan reflected on England's 2019 WC Campaign where the team lost three games in the league stage and yet managed to emerge with the ultimate prize.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"In the 2019 World Cup, England lost three matches. They lost to Sri Lanka, Pakistan and one more match. They became the world champions despite that. So it's not that everything is over but if they get too late in playing their main team and their better bowlers, they will not be able to catch the wagon."</p>

They have some fantastic bowlers, the dew didn’t come in as much as we expected, the ball held up a bit too. They bowled dead straight and kept the stumps in play, we just weren’t quite good enough. You got to let these defeats hurt, there’s no point in getting over things too quickly, we need to reflect. There’s a lot of character in this group, we need to show a lot of resilience and come back stronger. We need to have guys being able to perform under pressure and that’s what all of us will be working hard towards."</p>

'Just one in 8 attempts': Sehwag gives EPIC reply to Vaughan's 'England in World Cup semis' remark

<p>India's Hardik Pandya provided the home team much needed breakthrough with the wicket of Imam-ul-Haq when Pakistan was cruising along in the ODI World Cup 2023 match in Ahmedabad on October 14. Pandya brought balance to India's side with the wicket of Imam who was batting beautifully on 36 off 38.</p>

<p>It was the third ball of the 13th over and Pandya had been hit for a four on the previous ball, but bowled the next one a touch fuller. It was well outside off and Imam attempted to drive the ball. All the batter could manage was get an outside edge which wicketkeeper KL Rahul pouched easily.&nbsp;</p>

<p>With this defeat, England have now lost two in three games in the CWC 2023 edition. While they still remain in the top five (fifth), their journey won't be easy going ahead. Courtesy of a loss to the Afghans, the 2019 winners also registered an unwanted record. England have now become the first team to lose to all 11 Test-playing nations in the history of&nbsp;ODI World Cups.</p>

<p>In their ODI World Cup history, England have lost to Australia, India, West Indies, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, New Zealand, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Ireland, Afghanistan and Bangladesh. They&nbsp;lost their first game to arch-rivals Australia in 1975 before losing the 1979 World Cup final to West Indies. Their first defeat to India and Pakistan came in 1983 and 1987, respectively. The likes of New Zealand and South Africa achieved their first win over England in 1992 and 1996, respectively.</p>

<p>At the post-match presentation, Buttler said, "Disappointing to win the toss and concede that many, me missing that first ball down the leg side set the tone. Credit to Afghanistan, they outplayed us today. It came down to execution, we weren’t quite at the level we’d like to be with both bat and ball. They have some fantastic bowlers, the dew didn’t come in as much as we expected, the ball held up a bit too. They bowled dead straight and kept the stumps in play, we just weren’t quite good enough. You got to let these defeats hurt, there’s no point in getting over things too quickly, we need to reflect. There’s a lot of character in this group, we need to show a lot of resilience and come back stronger. We need to have guys being able to perform under pressure and that’s what all of us will be working hard towards."</p>

<p>England will now face South Africa in match 20 at the iconic&nbsp;Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai on Saturday (Oct 21).</p>

India have extended their perfect record over Pakistan at ODI World cups with an emphatic seven-wicket victory in Ahmedabad. WION Sports Editor Digvijay Singh Deo spoke to ecstatic Indian fans who witnessed the clash at the Narendra Modi stadium, and they believe India can win the World Cup.

<p>And yet it was only because of the illness of another fellow former&nbsp;England&nbsp;batsman in Graham Thorpe that he found himself in charge of Afghanistan at all, taking over in July last year for a Twenty20 tour of Ireland ahead of the T20 World Cup in Australia.</p>

<p>The 42-year-old Trott, who played over 200 international matches, worked as a batting coach for the&nbsp;England&nbsp;team on their tour of India in 2021.</p>

<p>For all their undoubted talent in the T20 format, where spinner Rashid Khan is a globe-trotting star of the franchise circuit, Afghanistan have struggled in the 50-over game.</p>

<p>Convincing defeats by Bangladesh and India in their opening two games of this World Cup mean Afghanistan have now lost 14 successive matches in the tournament -- a run stretching back to their lone win, against Scotland, in 2015.</p>

<p>A lack of runs, for all Hashmatullah Shahidi and Azmatullah Omarzai scored fifties in an eight-wicket reverse against India last time out, has been at the heart of Afghanistan's ODI struggles.</p>

<p>In Trott they have a coach who as a batsman was renowned for his concentration and an attention to detail exemplified by his deliberate marking of guard.</p>

<p>Born in Cape Town to a British father and South African mother, Trott played for South Africa youth sides from Under-15 to Under-19 level.</p>

<p>But he then took advantage of his British passport and his relationship with Bob Woolmer, who coached both South Africa and Warwickshire, to arrange a trial with the English county.</p>

<p>Having established himself at the Midlands club, Trott enjoyed a spectacular entry into Test cricket with a hundred on debut in a 2009 Ashes-deciding win against Australia at The Oval.</p>

<p>It was the start of a fine&nbsp;England&nbsp;career that yielded nearly 4,000 runs, including nine hundreds, in 52 Tests at an average of 44.08.</p>

<h2>'Get pigeon-holed'</h2>

<p>Yet having been dubbed a "rock" by Andy Flower, the then&nbsp;England&nbsp;coach, Trott was forced to make an abrupt exit from the 2013/14 Ashes tour of Australia with a stress-related illness having struggled against the short ball.</p>

<p>Trott eventually battled back to regain his&nbsp;England&nbsp;place for a 2015 series in the West Indies.</p>

<p>But asked to open the batting, he reached double-figures only once in six innings and suffered three ducks, with Trott announcing his international retirement at the end of the tour before bowing out with Warwickshire in 2018.</p>

<p>His own, highly-publicised, difficulties made some wonder how Trott would cope with the increased demands of being in charge of a national side.</p>

<p>But Trott, still to set foot in Afghanistan more than 14 months since his appointment -- the team don't play matches on home soil on security grounds, with the country having reverted to Taliban control in 2021 -- told the Guardian last week: "I enjoy the pressure of making decisions.</p>

<p>"I think sometimes if you're just a specialist coach, a batting coach or a bowling coach, you sort of get pigeon-holed a little bit. I think it's nice to oversee things."</p>

<p>That position, however, comes with added responsibility, as Trott discovered during a heart-breaking finish to Afghanistan's Asia Cup campaign last month.</p>

<p>Needing to overhaul a target of 292 in 37.1 overs to oust Sri Lanka on net run-rate, Afghanistan fell agonisingly short as Mujeeb Ur Rahman holed out with three needed from the first ball of the 38th over.</p>

<p>They could still have qualified by reaching 295 within 37.4 overs but appeared unaware of that possibility as last man Fazalhaq Farooqi blocked two deliveries before being dismissed attempting another defensive shot with six needed to go through.</p>

<p>"I'm gutted about it," recalled Trott. "As a head coach the responsibility stays with you.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"You're in charge, you're the guy where the buck stops. So that's hard to take."</p>

<p>The former cricketer believed that Pakistan were under pressure because of their past record against India in the World Cups.</p>

<p>"It's a reality and Pakistan have got to do something about it. They can't be termed as 'chokers' against India because that's not a great tag to have. Somehow it's a mental block, it's a skill block as well," he said.</p>

<p>The cricketer turned commentator acknowledged that the loss is going to hurt Pakistan and that the team should be brutally honest in the meetings going forward.</p>

<p>"It's going to hurt them. It's a scarring, it's a pasting, it's a battering and they've been outpaced and outplayed in all the three departments,” Ramiz added.</p>

<p>"Babar Azam and the senior players will have to rally around some of the young kids and have got to find an answer."</p>

<p>Pakistan men's cricket team director Mickey Arthur was not a happy man after his team's abject surrender against arch rivals India at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad during the World Cup encounter. Arthur took a dig at the BCCI - the governing body for cricket in India, saying the absence of support for Pakistan in the 132,000-capacity stadium made the&nbsp;occasion look more like "a BCCI event" rather than an international marquee match-up.</p>

<p>After Pakistanis failed to secure visas from Indian consulates to cross the border, the majority of the Ahmedabad stadium was awash with blue-jersey-wearing Indian supporters, which seemingly didn't go down well with Arthur.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"It didn't seem like an ICC event to be brutally honest. It seemed like a bilateral series; it seemed like a BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) event," said Arthur.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Arthur accused the stadium's public address system organisers of favouring India by refusing to play "Dil Dil Pakistan", the nation's unofficial anthem.</p>

<p>"I didn't hear 'Dil Dil Pakistan' ('My heart is Pakistan') coming through too often tonight. So yes, that does play a role, but I'm not going to use that as an excuse."</p>

<p>Despite the bizarre excuses, Arthur admitted that Pakistan's 'timid' playing style was perhaps the reason for the side's downfall.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"I thought we were a little bit timid. I did think we could probably have taken on the Indian spinners just a little bit more," said Arthur.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"I think we've got to realise that there are two ways to always skin a cat. And we've had success by taking it deep and then cashing in at the back end but we couldn't do that," added the former Pakistan coach.&nbsp;</p>

After losing the toss, India were asked to bowl first and rode on Jasprit Bumrah's 4 for 39, on a pitch akin for batters, as Afghanistan posted a healthy 272 for 8. The Afghans rode on their skipper Hasmatullah Shahidi's 80 and&nbsp;Azmatullah Omarzai (61) but could have scored much more, even more than 300, but Bumrah restricted the opposition with some stunning bowling and regular breakthroughs.</p>

<p>In reply, India completed the run-chase in a jiffy courtesy of Rohit Sharma's sublime 131 and Virat Kohli's 55 not out. Rohit ended as the Player-of-the-Match for his berserk knock, coming off 84 balls, but many also lauded Bumrah for his stellar show with the ball.</p>

<p>After the match, former Indian all-rounder Irfan Pathan, speaking to Star Sports, said, "You won't get a better bowler than him in the entire world. If you focus on his action, you will come to know how he uses his variations. He first sets up the batters with inswing, creates a cluster, and then bowls outswing without any change in action and deceives the batters."</p>

<p>The blockbuster ODI World Cup 2023 match between India and Pakistan is all set to be played on October 14 in Ahmedabad and the contest promises to be a thriller with both teams winning their opening two games. While India beat Australia and Afghanistan, Pakistan won over Netherlands and Sri Lanka to start their campaign.</p>

Pakistan, however, look a different side with Mohammad Rizwan in brilliant form. After scoring 100 against Sri Lanka he continued his impressive run with a 109-run knock against the Aussies. He needed 90 deliveries to complete the ton against a resolute Australian bowling attack.</p>
