ODI World Cup 2023: What is Jasprit Bumrah's new celebration vs Afghanistan? | Know More

On Wednesday (Oct 11), Indian captain Rohit Sharma became the joint-fastest to 1,000 runs in ODI World Cup history during his side's clash versus Afghanistan in the ongoing 2023 edition. Chasing 273 versus the Afghans, at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi, Rohit started off on a positive note with a flurry of boundaries to get to the feat. He, thus, joins David Warner at the top to get to the 1k-run club in just 19 innings.

Least innings to 1,000 runs in World Cups
19 - David Warner
19 - Rohit Sharma
20 - Sachin Tendulkar
20 - AB de Villiers
21 - Sir Vivian Richards
21 - Sourav Ganguly

As many as three Indian batters are in the top six in the elite club. Talking about Rohit, he has had a memorable run in the 50-over World Cup. He missed out on being a part of MS Dhoni-led India's victorious campaign in the 2011 edition, played a handy part with the bat in the 2015 edition (where India lost in the semi-finals) before coming to his own in the last edition, in England and Wales.

In 2019, Rohit ended the ODI World Cup -- with India out in the semis -- with 648 runs including five centuries. Overall, he has six centuries in the ODI WC history.

Talking about the India-Afghanistan clash, this is both sides' second outing in the ten-team tournament in India. India lost the toss and were asked to bowl first. At 63/3, India were on top of Afghanistan before captain Hashmatullah Shahidi (80) and Azmatullah Omarzai (62) propelled the Afghans to a challenging 272 for 8.

In reply, India have started on a brilliant note courtesy of Rohit. The home side is looking to make it two wins in a row in the competition after beating Australia by six wickets in Chennai on Sunday (Oct 8).

Rohit Sharma becomes joint-fastest to 1k runs in ODI World Cup history during India-Afghanistan clash

Pakistan beat Sri Lanka by six wickets in pursuit of 345 in match 8 of the CWC 2023 edition on Tuesday (Oct 10) in Hyderabad. Sri Lanka opted to bat first and rode on centuries from Kusal Mendis (122) and Sadeera Samarawickrama (108) to post 344 for nine. While they hardly got going in the final few overs, it seemed like a winning score nonetheless.

In reply, Pakistan were even jolted early and were reeling at 37 for 2 with Imam-ul-Haq and skipper, and their Mr. Dependable, Babar Azam back in the pavallion. It appeared that the Men in Green would go down easily before opener Abdullah Shafique -- playing his first game in ODI World Cup -- and keeper-batter Mohammed Rizwan stood tall with an impressive 176-run third-wicket stand. Shafique's 113 and Rizwan's 131 not out led the one-time winners to a convincing six-wicket win.

After their win over Sri Lanka, Little Master Sunil Gavaskar lauded Rizwan-Shafique's show. He feels this bodes well for the side as no significant contribution came from Babar. He further opined that Pakistan need not depend solely on Babar now with many others standing up to the occasion.

Gavaskar said on Star Sports, "When you are chasing 350 runs, it takes a lot. They also lost a couple of early wickets in the game. I think more than anything else, I mean, we have all known about what Rizwan can do. But Abdullah Shafique, he looked like a Test batter. The way he anchored the innings with Rizwan, it was great."

The cricketer-turned-commentator added, "More than anything else, Pakistan would have realised that they do not have to depend on Babar. And if Babar fails, there are other batters who are there to score the runs. And I think that is such an important thing for Babar himself because the pressure will not be on him that he has to score all the time."

With the win over SL, Pakistan maintained their dominance over their Asian neighbours in World Cup history, leading 8-0.

Pakistan are at the second spot in the overall standings in the World Cup with two back-to-back wins. They will now face arch-rivals India on Saturday (Oct 14) in Ahmedabad.

CWC '23: Pak don't have to depend on Babar anymore, feels Gavaskar after Rizwan-Shafique's heroics vs SL

Hardik Pandya bowled a superb slower ball to dismiss Afghanistan's Azmatullah Omarzai during India's ODI World Cup 2023 match in New Delhi on October 11. The wicket came after the batter had added 121 runs for the fourth wicket with skipper Hashmatullah Shahidi after Afghans lost three wickets for 63.

The wicket came in the 35th over with Omarzai batting on 62. The batter had hit the first ball of the over for a four but Pandya came back strongly and dismissed Omarzai with a peach of a delivery. Pandya had bowled a slower-one and the ball hit top of off stump to dislodge the bails. After the wicket, Pandya let a might roar out, clearly showing how much the wicket mattered at the time. Have a look at the wicket here:

The wicket came after the batter had added 121 runs for the fourth wicket with skipper Hashmatullah Shahidi after Afghans lost three wickets for 63. The wicket came in the 35th over with Omarzai batting on 62. The batter had hit the first ball of the over for a four but Pandya came back strongly and dismissed Omarzai with a peach of a delivery. Pandya had bowled a slower-one and the ball hit top of off stump to dislodge the bails. After the wicket, Pandya let a might roar out, clearly showing how much the wicket mattered at the time. ODI World Cup 2023: Watch - Hardik Pandya bowls PEACH delivery to take out Azmatullah Omarzai vs Afghanistan

The 1996 World Cup winner Sri Lanka suffered a second loss in ODI World Cup 2023 on October 10. The six-wicket loss came against Pakistan despite posting a huge total of 344 runs in 50 overs. It is the bowlers that are letting Sri Lanka down as was the case in the first game as well where they conceded 428 runs against South Africa.

Speaking on what's not going right with the bowlers, former Sri Lanka coach and WION's cricket expert, Dav Whatmore said that they are not able to execute their plans at all.

"Sadly they were unable to execute what they wanted. I am sure they made good plans to each of these batsmen like all the teams do at this level but they are unable to execute," said the 1996 World Cup winning coach.

Whatmore also said that injuries to Dusmanta Chameera and Wanindu Hasaranga aren't helping the team either. Notably, Pakistan chased down the target in 48.2 overs to register the highest successful chase in the World Cup ever.

"And let's be very honest, if there weren't injuries, there would be certainly two bowlers in that group that would be their first choice, Dusmanta Chameera and Hasaranga. So, we have a bowling group that has to cover those two main bowlers and what is happening is they are not able to execute," added the former Aussie player.

"But, I think partially because of the pressure they have been put under by whom they are bowling to. The batsmen have been very good. The first game I think we can excuse them as it was an incredible one-off 400-run world record total on a good batting strip. The second one, 340 to protect, they couldn't do it."

The former coach also said that he 'fears where would Sri Lanka go from here (two defeats) in the tournament but they really need to execute their plans.'

ODI World Cup 2023: Former coach Dav Whatmore fears 'what next' for Sri Lanka after loss against Pakistan

After losing the toss, Rohit Sharma-led India have been asked to bowl first by Afghanistan in match 9 of CWC 2023 edition on Wednesday (Oct 11). Afghanistan were off to a decent start before they were soon reduced to 63 for 3. Talking about the Afghan openers, Ibrahim Zadran departed for 22 whereas Rahmanullah Gurbaz (21) was looking good before Shardul Thakur held on to a stunning catch to send him packing.

Talking about Gurbaz's dismissal, it was a well-executed short-pitched delivery from birthday boy Hardik Pandya. The batter went for the shot and seemed to have timed it well. Shardul, stationed at deep fine leg, caught the ball, was about to touch the boundary rope and, hence, threw the ball in the air, regained balance and completed the catch without breaking a sweat. Here is the video of Shardul's effort: Shardul thakur take amazing catch 😲😲😲😲 #INDvsAFG #shardulthakur #shami #AmitabhBachchan #raj pic.twitter.com/CckkRxnfCq — Govind Vishwakarma (@GovindV41685093) October 11, 2023 × Also read: Ashwin will fight till the last delivery: Tendulkar lauds star player's attitude and approach towards game For the Afghanistan game, India have gone ahead with an extra pacer in the form of fast-bowling all-rounder Shardul as R Ashwin got dropped from the playing XI. After losing the toss, captain Rohit Sharma stated, "We were looking to bat second. We saw the amount of dew last evening. Don't think the wicket will change much. Need to bowl well and need to come back and bat better. We were under pressure (against Australia) to start with, but KL and Kohli batted well, they were magnificent and we take a lot of pride in our performance. It was a good game for us, hopefully we can repeat that and keep the momentum going forward. Ashwin misses out, Shardul Thakur comes in for him." India is keen to make it two wins in a row in the 10-team tournament after beating five-time champions Australia by six wickets in their opening clash, in Chennai on Sunday (Oct 8). Teams: Afghanistan (Playing XI): Rahmanullah Gurbaz(w), Ibrahim Zadran, Rahmat Shah, Hashmatullah Shahidi(c), Najibullah Zadran, Mohammad Nabi, Azmatullah Omarzai, Rashid Khan, Mujeeb Ur Rahman, Naveen-ul-Haq, Fazalhaq Farooqi India (Playing XI): Rohit Sharma(c), Ishan Kishan, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul(w), Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja, Shardul Thakur, Kuldeep Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj WATCH WION LIVE HERE You can now write for wionews.com and be a part of the community. Skipper Shakib Al Hasan explained that the logic behind choosing to field was the weather but agreed that they didn't start well. "Was a good toss to win, was colder weather then. There was some rain last night. We did not start well, first ten overs especially. When you give them a sniff they always come hard at us. We came back strongly. But it was a little too late," said Shakib after the match. On the second consecutive loss, Shakib said that they have to move on, especially with some tough matches coming up in the tournament. "We have to move on and we have some tough matches coming up. We cannot be bogged down. We have to move on and think about all the positives we have been doing," said the skipper. IND vs AFG Weather report from Delhi - Check latest updates ahead of World Cup 2023 India-Afghanistan match

Pakistan batter Mohammad Rizwan helped his team create history in the ODI World Cup 2023 after beating Sri Lanka by six wickets on October 10. The wicketkeeper braved some cramps during an unbeaten innings of 131 runs and said that 'it is speechless' to perform like this for the country.

“Whenever you perform for your country and the performance is like, it is speechless for you,” Rizwan said to Simon Doull for the ICC while speaking after his Player of the Match award.

“It was difficult because with a chase like that it’s always special. But the thing is for us, when we went into the dressing room after bowling, every player had belief that we were going to chase that. So that’s why the positive vibes were in the mind,” he further added.

Rizwan also said that there were two turning points in the game, one of which came after Pakistan got Kusal Mendis out after the batter scored 77-ball 122.

"At that point we decided that 340-350, if we restrict them to there we’re going to bowl very well. You saw in the middle of our overs, when Hasan Ali comes on, Shaheen Shah Afridi comes on and Haris Rauf, they bowled very well and restricted them then.

“We really must give credit to Kusal and Sadeera (Samarawickrama – Sri Lanka’s other century maker on the day). They played very well, but we knew that the pitch was very good and if the target was 350 we could chase that," he said.

The next point, Rizwan mentioned, was his skipper and arguably Pakistan's best batter Babar Azam getting out.

“Unluckily they got Babar Azam, but this is a team game and at that time we decided to go with a deep partnership.

“Basically, a chase of 300-plus is always… it’s a good track, a supportive wicket for us. If we go deep and just turn the innings into a T20 innings towards the end, that’s what we decided,” said Rizwan.

Pakistan completed the record chase of 344/4 in 48.2 overs and apart from Rizwan, Abdullah Shafique also scored 113 runs.

ODI World Cup 2023: Pak batter Mohammad Rizwan names 'two turning points' during record win vs Sri Lanka

Match 8 of the ICC ODI World Cup 2023 edition will see Asian giants Sri Lanka and Pakistan lock horns with each other at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad on Tuesday (Oct 10). Both teams are coming into this face-off on the back of contrasting results in their respective tournament openers.

While Babar Azam-led Pakistan beat the Netherlands by 81 runs, Dasun Shanaka-led Sri Lanka put up a valiant fight versus the mighty South Africans, in pursuit of 429, but lost by 102 runs. Thus, the battle between two strong Asian sides promises to be an enthralling one on Tuesday evening.

In head-to-head at the World Cup, the 1992 winners have a clear edge over the Islanders with a 7-0 record (in eight games). Pakistan have beaten the Sri Lankans in eight out of the last nine ODIs. The Lankans, however, edged past them in their last face-off, which was during a tight Super Four contest in the Asia Cup last month.

PITCH CONDITIONS AND MATCH PREDICTION

Talking about the pitch, it has been flat and allowed for easy run-scoring despite a bit of turn on offer. Pakistan have played three matches at the venue and, thus, will start as favourites due to the familiarity factor, recent past record and an unbeaten streak over the opposition in World Cup history. Expect a 260-280 kind of surface, which can be a winning total. Will Pakistan continue their winning run over SL? Well, likely so!

WHAT THEY SAID

"Pakistan is quite a strong opposition. The only advantage that we have is that we have been playing Pakistan recently in the Asia Cup as well, so both teams know quite well about each team's strengths, weaknesses, whatever it may be. I think it's going to be a good tussle" - Naveed Nawaz, Sri Lanka's assistant coach.

"We've got full faith in our top order. They will click at some stage. And we're open and honest to say that we're not getting what we would like out of the Powerplay as yet. But we're certainly very happy with other phases of our game which have kicked into gear and did enough the other night to get over the line" - Grant Bradburn, Pakistan head coach.

Predicted Playing XIs:

According to Dav Whatmore, Sri Lanka's 1996 World Cup-winning coach and WION's in-house expert, the potential XIs are expected to appear like this:

Pakistan XI: Fakhar Zaman, Iman-ul-Haq, Babar Azam, Saud Shakeel, Mohammed Rizwan, Iftikhar Ahmed, Shadab Khan, Nawaz, Haris Rauf, S. Afridi, Hasan Ali

Sri Lanka XI: Patthum Nissanka, Kusal Perera, Kusal Mendis, Sadeera Samarawickrama, Charith Asalanka, Dhananjaya de Silva, Dasun Shanaka, Dunith Wellalage, Dilshan Madushanka, Maheesh, Theekshana, Matheesha Pathirana

Earlier, Sri Lanka were flying high on tons from Kusal Mendis (122) and Sadeera Samarawickrama (108) as they posted 344/9 in their 50 overs. Pathum Nissanka also contributed to the team’s excellent run with the bat as he scored 51 before falling victim to Shadab Khan. For Pakistan, Hasan scalped four wickets with Haris Rauf getting two. Pakistan will next take on India in the ODI World Cup high-voltage contest on Saturday (Oct 14) at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. They have never beaten India in the ODI World Cup in seven meetings and will look to break the duck on Saturday. On the other hand, Sri Lanka will look to bounce back against Australia when they meet the five-time champions on Monday. ODI World Cup 2023: Shafique, Rizwan demonstrate Pak's credentials in record-breaking run chase against SL

Former India cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar has raised concerns over Hardik Pandya’s involvement as a bowler in the ODI World Cup as he feels it could bring added pressure to him. The Indian team is all set to take on Afghanistan in their second ODI World Cup contest on Wednesday (Oct 11) in New Delhi’s Arun Jaitley Stadium. Pandya, an integral part of the Playing XI, has been India’s big-game player with his batting and bowling abilities.

Manjrekar highlights key factor

"My view is that, unless there is a compelling reason, I don't like Hardik Pandya as your third seamer. I think he also feels the pressure if he is the third seamer," Sanjay Manjrekar said during a discussion on Star Sports.

"What is likely to happen is that if the pitch is similar to the one that we had in that South Africa-Sri Lanka game, which was a belter, there was nothing there for the spinners, I don't see Ashwin playing on that surface."

In 83 matches for India, the all-rounder has scored 1 769 runs while scalping 80 wickets.

India could gamble in the Delhi match on Wednesday (Oct 11) if they go with an unchanged Playing XI from their win against Australia. India played three spinners Ravichandran Ashwin, Kuldeep Yadav, and Ravindra Jadeja in the Australia contest. However, if they play with the same team, Hardik’s role as a pace bowler becomes more important to the side.

However, if Ashwin is dropped in favour of Mohammed Shami, it could reduce the workload on Hardik.

Delhi wicket has generally favoured speedsters more than spin options in the past.

India will take on Afghanistan at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in the city on Wednesday, having got the better of Australia on Sunday by six wickets.

On the flip side, Afghanistan will look to bounce back from their defeat against Bangladesh in the opening match. They were beaten by six wickets as well in the adverse outfield conditions of Dharamshala on Saturday.

The match will start at 2 PM with the toss taking place at 1:30 PM.

Riding on the sensational hundred from Dawid Malan England beat Bangladesh by 137 runs to register their first win of the campaign.
England register first win

“England needed to bounce back from their disappointing defeat against New Zealand and they really did it in style to highlight they are the defending champions. It was very poor from Bangladesh that they could not challenge England, but the conditions were always going to favour the defending champions,” WION’s cricket expert Dav Whatmore said in his post-match analysis.

“Dawid Malan was excellent with the bat and the way he batted was also superb to see. His knock was the big difference-maker for the side. Very delighted to see how he has developed this approach especially when England lost to New Zealand in the curtain-raiser. Also great to see Reece Topley getting four wickets in the match as England ran riot when they needed to,” Malan added on England’s approach.

England scored 364/9 in their 50 overs as the champions bounced back from their disappointing defeat against New Zealand. Malan amassed 140 runs in 107 deliveries that consisted of 5 sixes and 16 fours as he ran riot with the bat. He was supported by Joe Root, who scored 82 off 68 helping England reach the massive target.

In reply, Bangladesh were bowled out for 227 in 48.2 overs with Litton Das scoring 76 and Mushfiqur Rahim 51. However, with Reece Topley in top form in his first World Cup match, England ran out winners in an easy contest. Topley scalped four wickets while Chris Woakes ended with two. There were wickets for Sam Curran, Mark Wood, Adil Rashid, and Liam Livingstone as well.

“The manner of win could also be a big difference for England as it could help them bolster their Net Run Rate (NRR). I think, England are still the team to beat and this result exactly shows why they will be top contenders to win the ODI World Cup,” the former World Cup-winning coach added.

ODI World Cup 2023: Dawid Malan's knock was big difference-maker - Dav Whatmore on England's win vs Bangladesh

New Zealand won their second ODI World Cup 2023 game against the Netherlands by 99 runs, consolidating their position at the top of the table. The fact that New Zealand were without their top batter and regular skipper Kane Williamson and ace bowler Tim Southee, makes these two wins even more sweet.

While Devon Conway and Rachin Ravindra hit centuries in the first game for New Zealand against England, all the top five batters scored runs in their second game against the Dutch as the Kiwis posted 322/7 in their 50 overs.

For the Blackcaps, Will Young scored 70 while the first game's Player of the Match Rachin Ravindra scored 51 in the Netherlands games. Apart from them, Daryl Mitchell scored 48 and stand-in skipper Tom Latham also managed to contribute 53.

With Kane Williamson most probably going to play in the next game for New Zealand, the Kiwis will have a difficult decision to drop one of the batters from their winning XI of the last two teams.

Speaking on the same, WION's cricket expert and 1996 World Cup-winning coach Dav Whatmore said that it could either be Glenn Phillips or Mark Chapman.

The chances are Chapman will get the sack rather than Phillips as the latter had been handy with his spin in the first game against England.

As for the bowling department, Tim Southee could replace Trent Boult who has been off-colour in the first two games for New Zealand while Matt Henry has done well.

In the spin department, Ravindra and Mitchell Santner, who took a five-for in the game against the Netherlands, seem a lock-in in the side for the next game as well.

ODI World Cup 2023: Who will New Zealand drop when Kane Williamson is back? Dav Whatmore answers

New Zealand's Trent Boult may have been off colour with the ball but his catching skills are still top notch and the same was on display during the ODI World Cup 2023 game vs Netherlands on October 9. Boult took an athletic catch at the boundary to dismiss Bas de Leede in the 17th over of the innings.

Rachin Ravindra bowled a tossed-up delivery outside off to which de Leede played a brilliant lofted drive shot.

Boult was at the long-off boundary and caught the ball but got disbalanced. The Kiwi fielder then tossed the ball up in the air, jumped over the boundary and came back inside the field to complete a fantastic catch.

Have a look at the catch below:

New Zealand's Trent Boult may have been off colour with the ball but his catching skills are still top notch and the same was on display during the ODI World Cup 2023 game vs Netherlands on October 9.

Have a look at the catch below: View this post on Instagram A post shared by ICC (@icc) × New Zealand eventually went on to win the match by 99 runs - their second victory in as many games. ODI World Cup 2023: Watch Trent Boult take SENSATIONAL catch at boundary vs Netherlands

India got off to a winning start in the home ODI World Cup on Sunday (Oct 8) at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. Taking on the five-time winners Australia, Rohit Sharma-led India were asked to bowl first and rode on Ravindra Jadeja's three-fer and two wickets each from Kuldeep Yadav and Jasprit Bumrah to bundle out the visitors for 199 in 49.3 overs. In reply, India were tottering at 2 for 3 before Virat Kohli's 85 and KL Rahul's 97 not out took them home with six wickets, and 52 balls, to spare.

Now, the Rohit-led Men in Blue will lock horns with Afghanistan in their second outing at the national capital New Delhi on Wednesday (Oct 11). Talking about Afghanistan, they fell flat in their tournament-opener, losing to Bangladesh in Dharamshala by six wickets after being out for 156. For them to give a good fight versus Team India, they need their batters to stand tall and pull off an all-round effort.

IND vs AFG, Head-to-head record in ODI World Cup

So far, both sides have met only once in the ODI World Cup history. In the 2019 edition, Kohli-led India only managed 224 for 8 after opting to bat first in Southampton. In reply, Rashid Khan-starrer Afghans were bundled out for 213 to lose by 11 runs with Mohammed Shami taking a hat-trick.

Pitch conditions and result prediction:

The fresh pitches at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, prepared using black soil, has made the surface more batting-friendly. Expect another high-scoring affair -- especially if India bat first -- with dew assisting the team batting second as well. It will be interesting to see what the captain winning the toss chooses to do.

India can also consider using a spinner less with one of Shardul Thakur or Mohammed Shami coming in. Overall, Shubman Gill-less India are expected to emerge on top with less hiccups.

According to Dav Whatmore, Sri Lanka's 1996 World Cup-winning coach and WION's in-house expert, the potential XIs should be as follows:

India XI: Rohit Sharma (c), Ishan Kishan, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul (wk), Hardik Pandya (vc), Ravindra Jadeja, Shardul Thakur, Kuldeep Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj

Malik said while addressing a press conference in Ahmedabad, "Along with more than 7,000 police personnel, we will deploy nearly 4,000 home guards to secure the stadium and to maintain law and order in communally sensitive areas of the city during the match. In addition to these personnel, we will deploy three 'hit teams' and one anti-drone team of the NSG. Nine teams of our bomb detection and disposal squad will also be utilised." "Apart from 13 companies of the state reserve police (SRP), we will deploy three companies of Rapid Action Force as part of our security setup. The RAF will keep a watch on communally sensitive areas of the city. To help people in case of a stampede, we have already prepared an evacuation plan and rehearsals are also going on at the stadium," Malik further claimed.
KOHLI AND RAHUL'S CANDID CHAT

In their conversation, Kohli recalled the stunning 233-run third-wicket stand with Rahul in India's Super Four clash versus Pakistan in the Asia Cup but rated their recent stand 'bit more special.'

Kohli started by saying, "Talking about the special partnership that I and KL had, we had one in the Asia Cup as well but this was a bit more special." He then asked Rahul, "How does it feel, how is the body feeling firstly."

Rahul replied, "Tired. I won't lie, you know how it was the only chat after I think 50 or 70 runs of the partnership was let's conserve energy. Let's not run the twos but once you hit it in the gap then I guess instincts take over and we end up running. It was a tough day but it could get our World Cup journey started with a good victory."

He then asked his partner, "What was your feeling when you were walking in?"

Rahul was quick to respond, "I never expected it, you do lose a couple of quick wickets sometimes when the ball is doing something but not like that it still takes 4-5 overs. It doesn't all happen in 1.5 overs or 2 overs time. I just came and sat, I just had a shower, the minute I sat down Ishan got out. I had to rush back to get taped and started wearing my pad."

In India's heartbreaking CWC '19 semi-final loss versus New Zealand, chasing 240, the then Kohli-led Indian team were 5 for 3 and struggled to get past the finish line, losing by 18 runs. In their very next outing in the World Cup, i.e. their opener in the 2023 edition, the Men in Blue once again struggled early on but had Kohli-Rahul who bailed them out of the crisis.

CWC 2023 - 'Never expected that': Rahul recalls India's early collapse vs Australia in chat with Kohli - Watch

India batsman KL Rahul missed out on a century as he hit a shot too well vs Australia in the 2023 ODI World Cup match on October 8. Rahul was batting on 91 when India needed five runs to win. The batter hit a lofted extra cover drive a bit too nicely in the air and the ball sailed over the boundary for a six, handing India a six-wicket win.

After the shot, which came in the 42nd over off Pat Cummins, Rahul went down on his haunches, realising what he had done, albeit with a smile as India won the game. Have a look at the shot here:

India batsman KL Rahul missed out on a century as he hit a shot too well vs Australia in the 2023 ODI World Cup match on October 8. Rahul was batting on 91 when India needed five runs to win. The batter hit a lofted extra cover drive a bit too nicely in the air and the ball sailed over the boundary for a six, handing India a six-wicket win. After the shot, which came in the 42nd over off Pat Cummins, Rahul went down on his haunches, realising what he had done, albeit with a smile as India won the game. ODI World Cup 2023: KL Rahul hits a shot TOO WELL for a six vs Australia and misses out on scoring 100

The upbeat New Zealand side will face the Netherlands in match 6 of the ODI World Cup 2023 in Hyderabad. Fresh off a massive win over defending champions England in the tournament opener, the Kiwis will aim to continue building on the momentum.

On the flip side, the Dutch will look to cause perhaps the biggest upset of this edition in this solo clash on Monday.

NZ's regular captain, Kane Williamson, will miss the second straight CWC game, owing to recovering from the leg injury he sustained earlier this year during an IPL game.

Though he featured in the two warm-up matches, scoring a fifty in one of them, Kane will remain on the bench until cleared to play by the team doctor. His absence would mean Rachin Ravindra, the star for the Black Caps against England, will take the number three slot.

World Cup Cricket: Pakistani presenter Zainab Abbas deported after anti-India posts surface: Reports

India beat Australia in match 5 of CWC 2023 edition on Sunday (Oct 8) at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.

Being asked to bowl first, Indian bowlers restricted Australia to 199 in 49.3 overs with Ravindra Jadeja accounting for 3 for 28, along with two-fers from Jasprit Bumrah and Kuldeep Yadav each. In reply, the Men in Blue were 2 for 3 before a 165-run third-wicket stand between KL Rahul (97 not out) and Virat Kohli (85) stole the show and took India home with six wickets, and 52 balls, to spare. Thus, Rohit Sharma & Co. have opened their CWC 2023 campaign in style.

After the win, many former cricketers and experts of the game lauded Rahul and Kohli for battling a tough period early in the run-chase, buying out some time in the middle, keeping the scoreboard ticking before taking on the attack.

Talking about Rahul, the keeper-batter has been in exceptional form ever since he made his international comeback -- from a hip injury suffered in IPL 2023 -- during the Asia Cup. Since his return, he has had scores of 111*, 39, 19, 58*, 52, 26 and 97*. Thus, former Indian all-rounder Irfan Pathan lavished huge praise on the 31-year-old Rahul.

'KL Rahul doesn't seem like the Rahul who used to take pressure before'

Speaking exclusively to Star Sports, Irfan analysed Rahul's successful approach post his return and said, "He's been looking very calm. He doesn't seem like the Rahul who used to take pressure before, now he looks like he's soaking that pressure, and it can be seen in the result. And because of that, he doesn't even seem like he's going to get out while he is batting. He's getting beaten less. That doesn't mean one doesn't get beaten."

He added, "There seems to be control, he's finding the singles, playing the big shots, he's also using the sweep shots, seems to be having a lot of time while pulling the ball. He has worked a lot on his technique, but most importantly he looks like a much better version of himself than before."

The Indian team management would be mighty pleased with the batting effort as Rahul-Kohli ensured the hosts recovered from early setbacks to win the contest. After this win, India will now shift their focus to their next game, where they take on Afghanistan on Wednesday (Oct 11) in New Delhi, India.

KL Rahul looks like a much better version of himself, says Irfan Pathan after India beat Australia in CWC 2023

Rohit Sharma-led India beat Australia in match 5 of ICC ODI World Cup 2023, on Sunday (October 8), at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. Being asked to bowl first, India bundled out the Aussies for 199 in 49.3 overs and chased down the score with six wickets courtesy of Virat Kohli's 85 and KL Rahul's unbeaten 97. At one stage, India were tottering at 2 for 3 before Kohli-Rahul's 165-run fourth-wicket stand propelled the home team to a convincing victory over the five-time World Cup winners.

After the match, former Indian opener Virender Sehwag hailed Kohli and KL Rahul. He, in particular, praised the No. 3 batter and stated that Kohli always performs on the big stage for the Men in Blue.

Speaking to Cricbuzz, Sehwag stated, "Both Virat Kohli and KL Rahul played exceptionally well. Their partnership was fantastic. Both of them scored hundreds together against Pakistan as well and stitched together a great partnership. But this time, it came under a lot of pressure and was in a crunch situation."

'Virat Kohli's hunger to score increases in World Cups'

The former cricketer further opined on Kohli, "What can I say about Virat Kohli? Jahan matter bade hote hain, wahan King Kohli khade hote hain (Virat Kohli always performs on the big stage). Virat likes to perform on the big stage. His hunger to score increases in World Cups. I was quite surprised to see him get out at 85. He likes to stay till the end. He will be quite disappointed."

Sehwag added, "A 34-year-old Virat told Rahul to play like Test cricket here. However, Kohli used to tell me the same in 2008. He would ask me to play a bit slowly, like Test cricket. That is his nature. He likes to take his time before going for big shots. This has made him such a big player. He plays according to the situation and knows that even if he takes a few balls, he can cover up later in the innings."

For India, Ravindra Jadeja (3 for 28), Kuldeep Yadav (2 for 42) and Jasprit Bumrah (2 for 35) led the charge with the ball and restricted the Aussies for a below-par total. During their run-chase, India were tested but would be happy to emerge out victorious. They will now face Afghanistan on Wednesday (Oct 11) in New Delhi, India.

Kohli always performs on the big stage - Sehwag LAUDS star batter after India's CWC '23 win over Australia

In what comes as a blow to the Indian cricket team, opener Shubman Gill will miss the second World Cup game against Afghanistan after sitting out the opening encounter against Australia due to dengue.

According to a statement released by the BCCI, the star opener will stay in Chennai as the team moves to Delhi for the match against subcontinental neighbours at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on October 11.

"Team India batter Shubman Gill will not be travelling with the team to Delhi on 9th October 2023," read the BCCI statement.

Gill will stay back in Chennai and will be under the supervision of the medical team.

"The opening batter who missed the team’s first fixture in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 against Australia in Chennai is set to miss the team’s next fixture against Afghanistan in Delhi on the 11th of October," BCCI added.

In the lead-up to the match against Australia, India's head coach Rahul Dravid had given a ray of hope to fans by remarking that a call would be taken on Gill's fitness. However, the batter did not even make it to the stadium on matchday.

Gill's absence was felt

Notably, Gill was replaced by Ishan Kishan in the opening match but the latter returned with disappointing returns. Chasing a full-length ball wide outside off, Kishan gifted a dolly to the second slip and departed on a golden duck on his World Cup debut.

His departure had a butterfly effect as skipper Rohit Sharma and no.4 Shreyas Iyer also succumbed to the new ball and departed without troubling the scorers.

India's mainstay Virat Kohli and middle-order batter KL Rahul were forced to steer the ship, braving a few anxious moments to guide India to the victory shores.

Gill's absence is especially notable as he has been one of the few batters that has been sizzling hot form coming into the marquee tournament. The batter from Punjab is India's highest run-getter in the 50-over format this year, amassing 1,230 runs at an average of 72.35. Batting at a strike rate of 105.03, the in-form batter has managed to cross the 50-run mark in half of his innings in the World Cup year.

After Afghanistan, India face arch-rivals Pakistan at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on October 14 and the team management will be hoping that Gill gets back to full fitness by then.

However, heroics from KL Rahul and Virat Kohli saw the Indian team home, having stitched a 165-run stand for the third wicket.

Rohit on India’s win

“I was (nervous), you don't want to start your innings like that, credit to the Aussie's bowlers as they bowled in good areas but some loose shots as well, when you have that kind of target you want to score as much as possible in the powerplay, but credit to Virat and KL on how they went about the chase.

“That is going to be the challenge for us as a team, moving to different conditions and adapting, whoever suits the conditions will have to come and do the job. Chennai never disappoints, they love their cricket, and for them to sit in that heat and come out and cheer for the team says a lot,” Rohit said in the post-match interview.

Tasked to chase 200, the pair of Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc crushed India to 2/3, revisiting memories from the 2019 World Cup semifinal loss to New Zealand. Like today, India were reduced to 5/3 at that time which paved the way for their World Cup exit. Ishan Kishan, Rohit, and Shreyas Iyer were dismissed for ducks in the first powerplay before Rahul and Virat came to India’s rescue.

The pair were no-nonsense with their approach as Virat scored 85 runs while Rahul remained unbeaten on 97. Their partnership led the foundation for India’s win in Chennai while Hardik Pandya remained unbeaten on 11.

What happened in Australia’s innings?

Spinners headlined India’s ODI World Cup opener against Australia on Sunday (Oct 8). The Men in Blue restricted Australia to 199 runs in their innings. India, playing with three spinners in their first match of the World Cup, saw the decision justified as the trio of Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, and Kuldeep Yadav scalped wickets in tandem.

Playing three spinners, it was Jasprit Bumrah who started India’s trade of wickets when he got the better of Mitchell Marsh for a duck on the second ball of the third over. David Warner (41) and Steve Smith (46) then stitched a 69-run stand for the second wicket before Kuldeep sent the former back to the pavilion. Smith and Labuschagne (27) then tried to bring the Aussies back on track before Ravindra Jadeja showed his class.

With Australia 140/7, the tail-enders showed good resilience to steer their side to 199 with India now needing to push with their batting line-up. For India, Jadeja ended with three wickets while Bumrah and Kuldeep scalped two each. There were wickets each for Ashwin, Hardik Pandya, and Mohammed Siraj.

'Their unwavering faith in us...': Ravindra Jadeja lauds Indian fans, hopeful to win CWC 2023 at home

India faced Australia in match 5 of the ICC ODI World Cup 2023 on Sunday (Oct 8) at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai. It was both the teams' opening games where Rohit Sharma & Co. won by six wickets, with 52 balls to spare, to get off their campaign with a winning start. Opting to bat first, Pat Cummins-led Australia only managed 199 in 49.3 overs as Ravindra Jadeja (3 for 28) stood tall along with two wickets each from Jasprit Bumrah and Kuldeep Yadav. In reply, India were in trouble and reeling at 2 for 3 before Virat Kohli (85) and KL Rahul (97 not out) took India home.

The duo got together with captain Rohit Sharma, Ishan Kishan and No. 4 batter Shreyas Iyer returning to the pavillion without opening their accounts. While Kohli was dropped early in his innings, with Mitchell Marsh giving him a reprieve, Rahul and he didn't give the Aussies any further chance and stitched an impressive 165-run third-wicket stand. Eventually, Rahul and Hardik Pandya remained unbeaten to take India to a winning start. After the match, Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar heaped praise on Rahul-Kohli and mentioned where Australia lost the plot.

Tendulkar wrote on X, formerly Twitter, "I was surprised to see Australia bat first after winning the toss. Commendable performance by the Indian bowlers to restrict them to 199. Australia started well but I felt they missed a left-arm spinner on this surface. The partnership between Virat and Rahul sealed the game for us. They very smartly took their time and were able to execute some superb shots. The ball surely came onto the bat much better in the second half of the game. Congratulations to #TeamIndia on a good start."

CWC 2023: Sachin Tendulkar heaps praise on Virat Kohli-KL Rahul, points out where Australia went wrong

ODI World Cup 2023: All records broken in India vs Australia Chennai face-off

Premier all-rounder Ben Stokes could sit out of England’s second World Cup 2023 clash on Tuesday against Bangladesh in Dharamsala as he continues to recover from a sore left hip. Stokes, who missed the CWC opener against New Zealand owing to the same injury, will have to wait for medical clearance before getting a World Cup game. Until then, rookie Harry Brook will take care of the middle-order duties.

"I played here in the IPL just gone, and there can be some good pace and bounce in the wicket.
