Former India captain Virat Kohli could not stay away from the headlines on Saturday (Oct 14) against Pakistan in the high-voltage World Cup contest as he attracted the attention of the internet. Playing against the arch-rivals at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, Virat had to leave the field just moments after the match started. However he was back on the field moments later, but made the headlines on the internet.

Why did Virat leave the field?

Virat initially started the match with a full-sleeved t-shirt with white stripes on the shoulders. He wore the kit during the national anthem and start of the match unaware of the new kit change. The rest of the team was wearing kits with tri-colour strips of the Indian flag with Virat being the exception. However, that mistake was brought into his consideration, and quickly went into the dressing room for a change. He would then wear the tri-colour striped t-shirt to match his teammates with India fielding first in the contest.

What happened in the Pakistan innings?

After winning the toss, India skipper Rohit Sharma put Pakistan to bat despite history suggesting the hosts have a better advantage batting first. The Indian team made one change for the match as in-form Shubman Gill returned to the team after recuperating from dengue while Ishan Kishan was dropped from the Playing XI.

Pakistan started their innings brightly with Imam-ul-Haq (36) and Abdullah Shafique (20) as they demonstrated Pakistan’s batting show. However, India would quickly come back in the match with quick-fire wickets to unsettle Pakistan at the Narendra Modi Stadium.
Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, and Kuldeep Yadav each got two wickets while the likes of Babar Azam (50) and Mohammad Rizwan (49) were the only other batters to get into double figures in the Pakistan innings.

India currently hold an unprecedented 7-0 lead against Pakistan in the ODI World Cup head-to-head matches.

ODI World Cup 2023: Virat Kohli leaves field for THIS hilarious reason vs Pakistan

Pakistan failed to make most of the gained momentum during the middle overs, as Indian bowlers struck gold, with each, barring Shardul Thakur, picking two wickets each to inflict a collapse in Ahmedabad on Saturday. While captain Babar Azam hit his maiden CWC 2023 fifty, Pakistan crumbled under pressure, with India wrapping them on 191 in the marquee World Cup clash.

After being asked to bat first at the biggest stadium in the world, Pakistan got off to a flyer, with both openers Abdullah Shafique and Imam-ul-Haq hitting fours early on. When Pakistan looked like taking an advantage over India, Mohammed Siraj picked the first wicket, trapping Shafique in front.

Captain Babar Azam and Imam took the innings forward but couldn’t take it far, as Hardik Pandya removed the left-hander caught behind.

The partnership between Babar and Muhammad Rizwan steadied the ship, with Babar completing his first fifty of this competition. The pair dodged the spin threat in the middle overs, helping Pakistan cross 150-mark.When they looked like changing gears, Siraj returned to pick the big fish in Babar bowled on 50. Soon after, Kuldeep Yadav gave India another breakthrough by dismissing Shakeel on six. After getting hit for a boundary by Iftikhar Ahmed, Kuldeep bowled him a wrong-un to get his second wicket in the over.

That wicket dented Pakistan’s momentum as Rizwan, who was just one run away from becoming the first Pakistani keeper-batter to complete a fifty against India in World Cups, got outfoxed by Bumrah’s slower off-cutter. With three wickets down in two overs, Pakistan’s back was against the wall.

Vice-captain Shadab Khan got bowled in the next over, while a couple of overs later, Pandya removed their last hope Mohammad Nawaz caught on four.

Hasan Ali tried contributing with some runs but couldn’t help his team cross the 200-run barrier, as they got all out on 191 inside the 43rd over.

Given the form the Indian batters are in, the hosts are likely to extend their head-to-head lead over Pakistan in CWCs to 8-0.

World Cup: Pakistan crumble under pressure in Ahmedabad as Indian bowlers strike gold in tense clash

The Indian Captain, Rohit Sharma, won the toss and elected to bowl first against Pakistan in the marquee World Cup 2023 clash at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. Star opener Shubman Gill returned to the playing XI after recovering from dengue fever, while Pakistan named an unchanged XI.

Here are the two teams:

India - Rohit Sharma(c), Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul(w), Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja, Shardul Thakur, Kuldeep Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj

Pakistan - Abdullah Shafique, Imam-ul-Haq, Babar Azam(c), Mohammad Rizwan(w), Saud Shakeel, Iftikhar Ahmed, Shadab Khan, Mohammad Nawaz, Hasan Ali, Shaheen Afridi, Haris Rauf

Crowd cheered on Gill’s announcement, booed Babar

The crowd seated at the Narendra Modi stadium erupted in joy when Rohit announced the decision to bring in Gill for Ishan Kishan. However, they booed Pakistan Captain Babar Azam when he addressed everyone during this turn.

Meanwhile, Gill returning to the playing XI means Ishan Kishan, who pressed for his case for a spot in the XI with his star performances in the lead-up to the CWC, got overlooked. Mentioning about the same, Rohit acknowledged Kishan’s contribution, saying, “Unfortunate for Ishan to miss out; feel for him, he stepped up when we needed him. Gill has been a special player for us over the past year or so, especially at this ground, and we wanted him back.”

He remained the only change, with India also opting to play Shardul Thakur ahead of Ravi Ashwin and Mohammed Shami.

With two wins in as many matches, India will look to carry forward the momentum and try and maintain their winning spree over Pakistan in the World Cups.

Pakistan aim to create history

Babar Azam admitted at the toss that even he looked to bowl first, considering several factors, including the dew that might play a role later in the innings.

Speaking with presenter and commentator Ravi Shastri at the toss, Babar said,

“We also wanted to bowl first. We have had good two wins, and momentum and confidence are high. Jam-packed stadium, we will enjoy it. We want to be good in the field, we had a couple of good practice sessions. Same team for us.”

Meanwhile, Pakistan is unchanged from their previous XI, which created history against Sri Lanka by completing the most successful run-chase in the tournament history.

With Pakistan batting first, they will aim to put runs on the board and bank on their bowlers to deliver in the second innings.

World Cup: Gill returns to XI as India bowl first against Pakistan; Ahmedabad crowd boos Babar Azam at toss

India skipper Rohit Sharma played down their supremacy over Pakistan in the ODI World Cup ahead of the marquee clash. Rohit, talking to the press on the eve of India vs Pakistan in ODI World Cup 2023, said that we, as a team, should pay attention to the fresh day.

"I don't think it [7-0 record against Pakistan in World Cups] is a psychological advantage. Because you have to play good cricket every day. So, it's important for us as a team that we, as I said, should not pay too much attention to what is already over. And, we should also pay attention to the fresh day, the fresh opposition," said Rohit.

Rohit also said that both the team will start evenly and that there's no favorite or underdog in the match.

"Both the teams will start evenly. I don't think there is a favourite or an underdog. Both the teams are equal before they go into the game. It's just about handling the pressure, dictating terms," added the Indian skipper.

Rohit, however, agreed that it's a massive game but they (India) are focussing on playing against the opposition which is quality.

"Like I said many times before, in the context of it, yes, it's a massive game. But for us, what is important is, we are playing an opposition tomorrow, which will be quality. So, we've just got to come against a quality opposition and play good cricket, which we've done in the last two games. And hopefully we can again show some consistency in our performance and play a good game of cricket," said Rohit.

Pakistan skipper Babar Azam, when asked about India's 7-0 streak against them, said that 'are streaks are meant to be broken.'

"All these streaks are made to be broken. God willing, we will try to give our best tomorrow. Anything can happen on the day. I fully believe my team has done well in the first three matches, and will continue doing so in the coming matches," he said.

ODI World Cup 2023: 'No psychological advantage,' says India skipper Rohit Sharma about 7-0 record vs Pakistan

IN PICS | Last six ODI match results between India vs Pakistan on Indian soil

The ODI World Cup has taken the cricketing world by storm as South Africa and Australia served a treat in a blockbuster contest on Thursday (Oct 12) in Lucknow. While South Africa won by 134 runs to condemn Australia to back-to-back defeats in the tournament, it was the Marcus Stoinis dismissal that caught the eye for a controversial dismissal. Third umpire Richard Kettleborough has now caught the eyes of the sports fans while his fellow English football official Darren England was in hot water for disallowing a Liverpool goal in the Premier League.

What was the controversy?

On the second ball of the 18th over, Stoinis was dismissed caught behind on the bowling of Kagiso Rabada with Quinton de Kock taking a fantastic low catch. However, he was initially given not out by the on-field umpire Joel Wilson as his bottom hand was not in contact with the bat where the ball had struck. Going by the rule books, if the hand is not in contact with the bat and the ball makes contact with it the batter is deemed not out.

However, South Africa opted for review where third umpire Kettleborough deemed that one hand was in contact with the other with the same in contact with the bat, but that close contact was minimal which was hard to trace from the naked eye. Upon review though Kettleborough decided to give Stoinis out that condemned Australia to 70/6.

Recently, English football official Darren England made headlines when he decided to disallow a Liverpool goal. Liverpool attacker Luis Diaz was onside but the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) failed to overturn the decision. This sparked a huge debate in the Premier League, leading to the suspension of the officials. The English football governing body Football Association (FA) was put under the scanner as they were criticised for the failure to deliver a right verdict.

What happened in the match?

South Africa got the better of Australia in the traditional World Cup rivalry with De Kock being the centre of attraction. He smashed back-to-back tons in the World Cup that saw the Proteas put 311/7 on the board. Aiden Markram was also on the show as he put on 56 runs with the bat while Kagiso Rabada scalped four wickets with the ball. Australia showed little resistance with the bat as they were bowled out for 177 with Marnus Labuschagne top-scoring with 46.

South Africa will next take on qualifiers Netherlands in their next match on Tuesday (Oct 17) in Dharamshala while Australia will look to bounce back having lost back-to-back World Cup games. They will take on former champions Sri Lanka on Monday, who in turn have lost their opening two matches at the marquee event.

Marcus Stoinis dismissal sparks debate on review system in ODI World Cup, refreshes Liverpool VAR controversy

Rohit Sharma-led India demolished Afghanistan by eight wickets in match 9 of the ICC ODI World Cup 2023 edition on Thursday (Oct 11) at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi. Being asked to bowl first, India rode on Jasprit Bumrah's 4 for 39 but Afghanistan managed a healthy 272 for 8 courtesy of captain Hashmatullah Shahidi (80) and Azmatullah Omarzai (61). In reply, India closed the run-chase in 35 overs courtesy of Rohit's sublime 131 and Virat Kohli's unbeaten 55.

Rohit was at his best from the word go during the run-chase. Hitman started off with a flurry of boundaries and ended with an impressive 84-ball 131, laced with 16 fours and 5 sixes at a strike rate of 155.95. His knock led to India making light work of the run-chase, which could have been tricky had India lost early wickets. After the match, former Indian opener-turned-commentator Aakash Chopra hailed Rohit -- who now has the most ODI World Cup tons (seven) -- and feels he doesn't get enough credit despite being a beast in the ODI format.

Chopra told JioCinema, "My focus for the chase was purely on Ishan Kishan. I thought that he played decently, was not the best but tried to hold his own, while he let the captain do all the heavy lifting on the other end."

Really happy with that. Don't want to think too much (scoring 7 hundreds in just three World Cups), I don't want to lose my focus. You need to make such things count."

CWC '23: 'Rohit is an ODI beast, does not...'- Chopra HAILS Hitman after India's easy win vs Afghanistan

India beat Afghanistan by eight wickets in pursuit of 273 in match 9 of the ICC ODI World Cup 2023 edition on Wednesday (Oct 11) at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, New Delhi. After losing the toss, India were asked to bowl first and rode on Jasprit Bumrah's 4 for 39, on a pitch akin for batters, as Afghanistan posted a healthy 272 for 8. The Afghans rode on their skipper Hasmatullah Shahidi's 80 and Azmatullah Omarzai (61) but could have scored much more, even more than 300, but Bumrah restricted the opposition with some stunning bowling and regular breakthroughs.

In reply, India completed the run-chase in a jiffy courtesy of Rohit Sharma's sublime 131 and Virat Kohli's 55 not out. Rohit ended as the Player-of-the-Match for his berserk knock, coming off 84 balls, but many also lauded Bumrah for his stellar show with the ball.

After the match, former Indian all-rounder Irfan Pathan, speaking to Star Sports, said, "You won't get a better bowler than him in the entire world. If you focus on his action, you will come to know how he uses his variations. He first sets up the batters with inswing, creates a cluster, and then bowls outswing without any change in action and deceives the batters."

"A bowler who bowls at 140 kph, inswing and outswing at one spot, bouncers, slower ones, yorkers, you won't get anywhere. The angle from which he bowls, his pitch map will be outside the off stump. The ball will come in from there and can go away as well," Irfan further pointed out.

Irfan added, "If you focus on his wrists and seam position, the seam position is towards fine leg when he bowls inswing and towards slip when he bowls outswing. There is no change in action, just the wrist's control and balance. This is praiseworthy bowling and it is impossible for the batter to pick it at a speed of 140 kph."

Bumrah ended with his best figures in an ODI World Cup match during the Afghanistan face-off in the national capital. Ever since his international comeback, following a lengthy injury layoff, he has been among wickets in every game and will like to continue in a similar manner going ahead in India's CWC 2023 campaign.

India will next face arch-rivals Pakistan in match 12 of CWC 2023 edition on Saturday (Oct 14) in Ahmedabad.

CWC '23: 'Won't get a better bowler than Jasprit Bumrah' - Irfan Pathan in awe of India pacer

The blockbuster ODI World Cup 2023 match between India and Pakistan is all set to be played on October 14 in Ahmedabad and the contest promises to be a thriller with both teams winning their opening two games. While India beat Australia and Afghanistan, Pakistan won over Netherlands and Sri Lanka to start their campaign.

The arch-rivals had recently met twice in the Asia Cup 2023 and India got better of the Men in Green with a win in the Super Four stage. Pakistan, however, look a different side with Mohammad Rizwan in brilliant form. India, meanwhile, have the upper hand as they boast a 7-0 record over Pakistan in the ODI World Cups and Sachin Tendulkar has played in five of them.

Speaking ahead of the marquee clash, Sachin, in a video shared by the ICC on Instagram said that there is a different intensity during the India-Pakistan World Cup games.

"The intensity is at different level. We have had some unbelievable battles. All those five match I have been part of - 1992, 1996, 1999, 2003, 2011, we have won all those five games," said Sachin.

ODI World Cup 2023: Quinton de Kock dazzles with bat against Australia to bring back-to-back tons

India locked horns with Afghanistan in match 9 of the ICC ODI World Cup 2023 on Wednesday (Oct 11) at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi. Rohit Sharma-led India thrashed the Afghans by eight wickets, with 15 overs to spare, in pursuit of 273. Riding on captain Rohit's 131 and Virat Kohli's 55 not out, India didn't break a sweat to complete the run-chase in style. During the match, Virat and Afghanistan pacer Naveen-ul-Haq also came face-to-face following their ugly spat during Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) and Royal Challengers Bangalore's (RCB) face-off of IPL 2023 in Lucknow.

Ever since Naveen returned to India for the ODI World Cup, chants of "Kohli Kohli" have followed him on the field by the Indian fans. When he came out to bat in the India-Afghanistan game, the crowd started chanting Kohli's name. The same happened during the Indian run-chase as well when the former Indian skipper took matters into his own hands and gestured to the crowd to stop the chants.

The two buried their hatchet with a warm hug, which received rousing applause from the Delhi crowd. Gautam Gambhir -- former Indian opener and LSG mentor who is on commentary duty in CWC 2023 -- lauded Kohli for his gesture. Talking to Jatin Sapru, he said on air, "That's a great gesture and I hope from here on, in the upcoming matches, in every one, people are reminded of Virat's gesture because every professional cricketer works hard to make it to this level to play for the country, to play in the IPL."

"If you can't support anyone, don't criticise him. You have the right to support your favourite player but you don't have any to criticise a player," the former batter further opined.

Gambhir added, "The most important thing is the way the crowd reacted, it should have behaved in a more sensible way because no one knew from this crowd what happened between those two on that day. The two players, and their team management only knew. I hope the crowds in the coming days behave better, and offer better support. People are coming to play in our country, and as hosts, we can become better brand ambassadors. The players coming here should take only good memories."

Gambhir was serving as Lucknow's mentor during Kohli-Naveen's spat in the LSG-RCB game in early May. He also got into a heated argument with Kohli, which made heads turn back then. However, Kohli-Naveen's warm hug has finally put an end to the whole episode.

ODI World Cup 2023: Returning Kane Williamson leads New Zealand to third consecutive win vs Bangladesh

For those who know and those who don’t, India leads Pakistan 7-0 in the Cricket World Cup history, with the eighth match scheduled to get underway at the Narendra Modi Cricket Stadium in Ahmedabad on Saturday (Oct 14). While history favours India heading into this marquee clash, Pakistan Captain and star batter Babar Azam feels the streaks are meant to be broken, and his team could create history by winning this match, upsetting over 100,000 fans inside the stadium.

Speaking to the media on the eve of the most-talked-about cricket match in this World Cup between India and Pakistan, Babar said whatever happened in the past cannot be changed, but his team can change what’s ahead of them.

Admitting to not worrying too much about this high-pressure game, Babar said his team would give their best on the field, leaving it to their efforts and God to yield them the desired result.

"I believe there is no point focusing on whatever has happened in the past. I believe we need to focus on what is ahead of us," Babar told media personnel ahead of the India-Pakistan match.

"All these streaks are made to be broken. God willing, we will try to give our best tomorrow. Anything can happen on the day. I fully believe my team has done well in the first three matches, and will continue doing so in the coming matches," he added.

‘Playing in front of large crowd is an opportunity and not pressure’

Having spoken earlier about playing under pressure in front of over 100,000 people at the Narendra Modi Cricket Stadium in Ahmedabad, Babar said he and his team look at this as an opportunity.

Claiming to have felt crowd pressure of this magnitude before (a reference to playing at the MCG in Australia), the ranked number one ODI batter expects the spectators to support his team as well during this match.

"This is not pressure," Babar said.

"We have played in front of large crowds before. MCG and all the big stadiums. Yes, this is also a big stadium. And yes, Ahmedabad will be mostly blue. If Pakistan fans had been allowed, they would have loved to support us. But when we entered Hyderabad, we saw a lot of supporters of the Pakistan team. I expect the same, and we are looking forward to the match."

The match will begin at 2 pm IST.

Meanwhile, a star-studded ceremony before the start of the game will also take place at the stadium, with several musicians and top names from the Bollywood industry gracing the occasion with their presence.

The match will be broadcast on Star Sports network on TV and Hotstar online.

I fully believe my team has done well in the first three matches, and will continue doing so in the coming matches," he added. ‘Playing in front of large crowd is an opportunity and not pressure’ Having spoken earlier about playing under pressure in front of over 100,000 people at the Narendra Modi Cricket Stadium in Ahmedabad, Babar said he and his team look at this as an opportunity. I expect the same, and we are looking forward to the match." The match will begin at 2 pm IST. Meanwhile, a star-studded ceremony before the start of the game will also take place at the stadium, with several musicians and top names from the Bollywood industry gracing the occasion with their presence. The match will be broadcast on Star Sports network on TV and Hotstar online. WATCH WION LIVE HERE You can now write for wionews.com and be a part of the community. All streaks are meant to be broken: Babar Azam shrugs off past records ahead of India-Pakistan World Cup tie

Former Australia batter Matthew Hayden lambasted the Pat Cummins-led team after they lost their second match in a row in the ODI World Cup 2023. Australia, on October 12, lost by 134 runs against South Africa in Lucknow. They had lost their first match of the tournament as well - by seven wickets against India.

Hayden pointed out that 'Australia haven't laid out the vision for this tournament' and 'they are hoping rather than understanding' at this point of time.

"Australia have won this tournament five times and that's an enormous effort and achievement for generations. But right now, there's a great sense of how are Australia going to win a game during this World Cup. It's had a very slow start, tad selection changes already and that for me just means that the vision or the map of how Australia are going about this tournament has not been really laid out," said Hayden.

"It is almost hoping rather than understanding and knowing exactly the strength of its team and that starts right at the top. There's been great captains overs the years and Pat (Cummins) is also one of those and has the ability but they need to step up right now." he added.

Hayden also said that it's really on Pat Cummins to change things around for Australia in the World Cup at this point of time.

"Pat cane be one of those Australian captains (World Cup winners) but at this stage it is really on him," he said.

"So, solid vision for Australian cricket and in this tournament and then it's just about having great execution with both bat and ball in hand and not waiting for the competition but making the competition and creating that within yourself as well," Hayden concluded.

Australia next play against Pakistan on October 20 and the result could make or break their campaign.

“Definitely thought it was above-par, seen from the Lucknow team it gets harder at night and it did prove that. It was sweaty and humid, but the bowlers bowled with intensity, didn't give them a sniff up front,” he added.

ODI World Cup 2023: Quinton de Kock relishes playing against Australia, says 'we played to our strengths'

With India and Pakistan both winning their first two matches in the ODI World Cup 2023, the contest between the two sides scheduled for October 14 has become even more exciting. While India have an upper hand over Pakistan in the ODI World Cup history, Pakistan would be looking to break the jinx this time.

Speaking on which team has the upper hand after both the sides won their first two games, 1996 World Cup-winning coach and WION's cricket expert Dav Whatmore said that it's the home team that always has the advantage.

"Home team, home crowd, home conditions always have the upper hand and history in world cup cricket as well," said Whatmore. India and Pakistan faced each other in the ODI World Cups for the first time in 1992 and ever since India have won all seven games against the arch-rivals.

Pak skipper Babar Azam's form is also a concern for the team as he has not scored runs in the two games Men in Green have played. Whatmore also said that he'll be wanting to contribute runs as the skipper.

"Babar will be wanting to get runs sooner than later but the good thing is other batters are making runs so they don't have to rely on Babar. But as a captain, you want to contribute so I think he'll be a little bit concerned," said the former Aussie player.

Talking about India's match vs Afghanistan, Whatmore said it is hard to stop Sharma when he bats like that.

"Hard to stop Rohit Sharma when he bats the way he did," said Whatmore and added that "Afghanistan are a good bowling team. One of the best spin attacks in the world but on that surface they needed to make 350 minimum to give the bowlers something to work on."

Notably, India chased down 273-run target in 35 overs with eight wickets remaining with Rohit (131 off 84 balls) scoring fastest tons for India the ODI World Cup history.

ODI World Cup 2023: Dav Whatmore picks team with UPPER HAND ahead of India vs Pakistan match

South Africa had a brilliant start to their ODI World Cup 2023 campaign, having won their first two matches in the tournament. Their second win came against Australia in Lucknow on October 12 as they beat the Aussies by 134 runs. Protea bowler Kagiso Rabada was the wreaker-in-chief, taking 3/33 in his eight overs.

Among the three dismissals by Rabada, the ball he bowled to Josh Inglis was the best one as the batter was left dumbfounded on an unplayable delivery that rattled his stumps. Australia were three down already when Rabada came on to bowl the 12th over of the Kangaroo chase and delivered a peach first up to leave Inglis flummoxed. The batter tried to defend the ball with a straight bat but the ball whizzed past and hit the stumps. Have a look at the video below:

ODI World Cup 2023: UNPLAYABLE! Kagiso Rabada cleans up Josh Inglis with a PEACH in SA vs Australia - WATCH

Jasprit Bumrah starred with the ball for India in their convincing eight-wicket win over Afghanistan in match 9 of the ICC ODI World Cup 2023 edition. Locking horns at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi on Wednesday (Oct 11), Rohit Sharma-led India restricted the Afghans to 272 for 8 riding on Bumrah's 4 for 39 -- his best figures in the World Cup -- before Hitman's sublime 131 and Virat Kohli's 55 not out took the home side to an easy win, with 15 overs to spare.

While Rohit walked away with the Player-of-the-Match award, many felt Bumrah played a very crucial role as well on a flat track. Ahead of the much-awaited India versus Pakistan showdown on Saturday (Oct 14) at the Narendra Modi Cricket Stadium, Ahmedabad, former Indian opener-turned-commentator Gautam Gambhir lauded Bumrah and made a big statement that there is a 'huge difference' between Shaheen Afridi and the Indian pacer.

"The way he dismissed Mitchell Marsh on that wicket (in the first game against Australia) and the way he dismissed Ibrahim Zadran, if there is a complete and most lethal bowler in world cricket, it is Bumrah. We compared Jasprit Bumrah and Shaheen Shah Afridi earlier; there is a huge difference," said Gambhir on Star Sports.

Gambhir further pointed out, "Tell me one fast bowler who can make such an impact in every phase. Bowlers bowl well either with the new ball or at the death but Bumrah has the same impact in the middle overs as he has with the new ball or the old ball."

Ever since his international return, Bumrah has been in top form. He came back to the Indian team during India's tour of Ireland in August after a long injury layoff (due to back issues). He has been among wickets in every game and would like to keep going forward in the remainder of the ODI World Cup at home.

Rohit-led India occupy the third spot in the points table with two back-to-back wins.

CWC '23: Huge difference between Bumrah and Afridi, feels Gambhir before India vs Pakistan showdown

India and Pakistan are all set to lock horns in the latest edition of their old-firm derby as they meet at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad in the ODI World Cup. Saturday’s meeting will be the eighth meeting between the sides in the ODI World Cup as the hosts look to extend their unbeaten run and continue the streak. WION’s cricket expert Dav Whatmore has backed the Indian team to flourish and continue the unbeaten run as they history on their side.

India to make it 8-0

“I think India have the edge over Pakistan despite them being in top form coming into the contest. India have a balanced unit and the way Rohit Sharma dazzled against Afghanistan, this gives any opposition goosebumps. I don’t see Pakistan winning this game as history favours the home side in this fixture. Seven wins out of seven is a ridiculous record and Pakistan will feel the heat in Ahmedabad on Saturday,” Whatmore said during the WION podcast with Aditya Pimpale.

This will be the first meeting between the sides at the iconic Narendra Modi Stadium which has a capacity of 125, 000. The venue is expected to be a full house for the high-voltage clash between the arch-rivals.

“The crowd will play an important role in the context of the output of the game. I have never seen a fixture of this magnitude being played in such a big stadium. Surely the crowd cheering and pushing the players will play a big role. They will be the 12th man for India and could be the difference-maker.

Speaking on the potential plans, Whatmore thinks India have a good bench strength despite them likely to be without Shubman Gill. The star batter missed India’s opening two matches due to dengue and and did not travel to Delhi in the win against Afghanistan. However, he is in Ahmedabad for the contest, having arrived on Wednesday.

“Shubman Gill’s absence could be decisive for the home side, but then you have players like Shreyas Iyer and Suryakumar Yadav while Ishan Kishan is at the top of the pecking order. It will be a good headache to have during the World Cup while dealing with incoming and outgoings from the Playing XI,” Whatmore added.

India won all seven meetings between the sides in the ODI World Cup dating back to 1992. The toss will have an important role to play in Saturday’s match, with Rohit Sharma losing the toss on both occasions in the World Cup. India however have won the toss on five of the seven occasions in the World Cup meetings.

The contest will start at 2:00 PM on Saturday with the toss taking place at 1:30 PM.

ODI World Cup 2023: I don’t see Pakistan winning this game - Dav Whatmore backs India to make it 8-0

India will face Pakistan on Saturday (Oct 14) in match 12 of the ICC ODI World Cup 2023 edition. Both teams are coming into this game on the back of two successive wins each and, thus, the clash is expected to go down to the wire at the iconic Narendra Modi Cricket Stadium, Ahmedabad. Before the clash, many former cricketers and experts of the game shared their predictions and picked which team would start as favourites.

Former Pakistan captain-turned-commentator Ramiz Raja feels Rohit Sharma & Co. will start as favourites. Ramiz told Jio Cinema, "This game, it's played off the field as much as it is on the field. It's a huge game. India will start as favourites, three is no doubt about it. They have all their bases covered when it comes to batting, bowling and in terms of fitness."

"Pakistan have to raise their level massively if they are to do well. But the win against Sri Lanka, the record chase would have made a huge difference to Pakistan in their dressing room, they have to think of winning and go on with an uncluttered mind," he further opined.

'If Pakistan don't....'

Ramiz went on to say, "Pakistan need wickets at the start. But their bowling has come under pressure, and wickets are not coming. Naseem Shah is not available, Pakistan is missing him a lot. Shaheen Shah Afridi has a swelling in one of his fingers and because of that, he has not been at his best. Hasan Ali's pace has dripped. But somehow, Pakistan have to lift their bowling performance. If they don't do it and the bowling is flat, India will bat Pakistan out of the contest. Pakistan have to take their catches well. They should not allow big partnerships.

The former Pakistan captain added, "Pakistan need a proper spinner. Can they take the chance by playing Usama Mir? The two spinners that are playing now are all-rounders. They have not performed up to the mark now. India have a very strong batting line-up. They have to think in terms of selection also. If they go in with an uncluttered mind, if they pick up a a couple of wickets with the new ball, if they can get the tactics right, keep the pressure on India batters in the middle overs, then they have an outside chance."

Rohit-led India won their tournament opener versus Australia by six wickets in pursuit of 200 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai before beating Afghanistan by eight wickets in New Delhi, India. Meanwhile, Babar Azam-led Men in Green beat the Netherlands by 81 runs and went past Sri Lanka by six wickets, in pursuit of 345, in their first two encounters in Hyderabad.

Overall, India lead Pakistan 7-0 in ODI World Cup history. It will be interesting to see if India maintain their lead or if Babar & Co. get off the mark versus the arch-rivals. Both sides locked horns twice in the Asia Cup 2023 edition, with the Men in Blue winning one and the other game being washed out.

India vs Pakistan, CWC '23: 'There is no doubt about it' - Ramiz Raja on which team starts as FAVOURITES

Well, it is true. They have been very unusual. Very unusual performance by them. It looks like they are lagging in confidence. More than a couple of players are out of form. They need to get back to doing the basics and enjoy their game. It seems they are overthinking at this point.

ODI World Cup 2023: New Zealand look to continue winning run as Bangladesh eye first victory

Australia slumped to their second defeat in a row in the ongoing ODI World Cup 2023 as they lost against South Africa by 134 runs on October 12 in Lucknow. This is their biggest loss in terms of runs in the ODI World Cups - a tournament which they have won five times - the most by any team.

Chasing 312, Australia folded out for 177 and skipper Pat Cummins acknowledged that they have 'got to try and find a way in all conditions.'

"I think if we want to be challenging, you [have] got to try and find a way in all conditions, and that's for the bowlers try and take wickets and for the batters try and score runs," Cummins told the broadcaster after the loss.

"Probably not much needs to be said [to my team-mates] tonight. I think everyone's hurting. We've got a few days and the next game's here as well. So we'll group and regroup...everyone's hurting. So we're trying to make amends."

There were, however, a couple of contentious DRS calls (Steve Smith and Marcus Stoinis) during the Australian innings which didn't go their way but the batters still didn't look comfortable at all.

Australia had lost the first game against India by seven wickets in Chennai before the South Africa match. They currently are ninth among the 10 teams on the points table. They play next against Pakistan on October 20 and the result of that match can make or break their campaign.

ODI World Cup 2023: Australia, South Africa prepare for clash of 'big egos' in Lucknow

Australia have found the going very hard at the ODI World Cup in India after they were smashed for 311/7 runs by South Africa on Thursday (Oct 12) in their second outing. This comes on the back of a big defeat against India on Sunday. Dav Whatmore, WION's in-house expert and former Australian cricketer, has now raised concerns for the Aussies as he feels it won’t be a surprise to see them bow out of the league stage.

Australia have reached at least the semifinals of the World Cup in six of the last seven tournaments, setting a benchmark for the side.

Australia could miss out

“I won’t be surprised if Australia don’t make the semifinals of the ODI World Cup as they have been struggling on multiple fronts. Australia did not have the best of starts to the World Cup having lost to India. They are missing a genuine wicket-taking spin bowler. Adam Zampa has not delivered to the expectations while Ashton Agar has been missing from the side,” Whatmore said on WION’s podcast on Thursday.

Australia were reduced to 199 against India on Sunday where their batting did not click on while their bowling department was also on the receiving end on Thursday against South Africa.

Zampa, the only specialist spinner in the team, has been given away 123 runs in 18 overs so far in two matches at the World Cup which has raised concerns for the Aussies.

South Africa could make top four

On the other hand, Whatmore thinks South Africa are dark horse to win the World Cup, having impressed so far. South Africa scored 428 runs in their first match against Sri Lanka, a record for the highest score in the World Cup while they now have 311 on the board against Australia.

“For me personally, I did not pick South Africa to win the World Cup, however, they have impressed me a lot. I did not pick them to make the top four, but they have so far proved me wrong. The way they are playing I think they will make the top four,” Whatmore added.

ODI World Cup 2023: Dav Whatmore makes big claim, says 'Aus finishing outside top four won't be a surprise'

In welcome news for Team India fans, Shubman Gill has hit the nets in Ahmedabad ahead of the much-awaited India-Pakistan showdown at the ICC ODI World Cup 2023 edition on Saturday (Oct 14). Gill reached the city on Wednesday (Oct 11) and trained in an exclusive batting session in Motera on Thursday. The 24-year-old also took part in fielding drills after returning to the ground for the first time since recovering from dengue.

As per reports, Gill batted for nearly an hour before noon, as physio Kamlesh and throwdown specialist Nuwan's looked on, against few local net bowlers.

The star batter was admitted to a Chennai hospital after his platelet count dipped post missing India's CWC 2023 opener, versus Australia in the city's iconic MA Chidambaram Stadium. He was discharged soon after treatment and flew for Ahmedabad on Wednesday -- when Rohit Sharma-led India beat Afghanistan in New Delhi.

It remains to be seen if Gill will make an entry back into the India playing XI as his condition is still being monitored. However, his recovery and return to the field has surely boosted the Indian cricket fans.

Gill has been in tremendous form in the recent past. While he has got runs across formats, his best has come in the ODI format. The right-hander has struck as many as five centuries in the shorter format.

He was the leading run-getter in the Asia Cup 2023 edition -- won by India. Moreover, Gill ended as the Player-of-the-Series in the Men in Blue's 2-1 home ODI series triumph versus Australia in late September.

Missing India's first two games, Gill will be desperate for a comeback. The Indian team management will, however, look to give him ample time before he is drafted into the XI. At present, the home side sit at the second spot in the ODI World Cup points table after two wins on the trot.

India lock horns with Pakistan in match 12 of the 50-over showpiece event and will aim to keep their unbeaten run intact. India lead Pakistan 7-0 in ODI World Cup history.

ODI World Cup: Shubhman Gill hits nets in Ahmedabad after recovery from dengue ahead of India-Pak match

India won their second ODI World Cup 2023 match against Afghanistan in an emphatic manner but it was Virat Kohli and Naveen ul Haq hugging each other during the match that stole the limelight from Rohit Sharma's blistering hundred. Kohli, who plays for Royal Challengers Bangalore in the Indian Premier League (IPL) and Naveen, a Lucknow Super Giants player, had engaged in a heated battle during an IPL 2023 match in Lucknow earlier this year.

There had been few words exchanged between LSG mentor Gautam Gambhir and Kohli as well after the Naveen-Kohli argument.

During the World Cup match in New Delhi on October 11, the players, however, hugged each other with a smile and buried the hatchet. Have a look at the video here:

India won their second ODI World Cup 2023 match against Afghanistan in an emphatic manner but it was Virat Kohli and Naveen ul Haq hugging each other during the match that stole the limelight from Rohit Sharma's blistering hundred.

Have a look at the video here: View this post on Instagram A post shared by ICC (@icc) × "Crowd will chant for their home cricketers and that is what they did. It is his (Kohli's) home ground. He is a nice guy, a good player and we shook hands," Naveen told news agency PTI after the game. Also Read: Shubman Gill arrives in Ahmedabad ahead of Pakistan clash in ODI World Cup "It (what happened) was always in the ground, it was nothing outside the ground. People make it big. They need that stuff for their followers. He said 'we are done with that and I said yes we are done with that'. We shook hands and hugged." As for the match, Indian skipper Rohit played a record-breaking innings of 131 off 84 as India mowed down the 273-run target in 35 overs with eight wickets in hand. Apart from Rohit, who now has surpassed India legend Sachin Tendulkar for most centuries (7) in ODI World Cup history, Kohli also scored 55 not out - his second fifty in as many World Cup games. Apart from them, opener Ishan Kishan also scored 47 runs as India wiped 156 runs off the target without losing a wicket in 18.4 overs. India currently stand second on the points table behind New Zealand on the net run-rate and next play Pakistan on October 14 in Ahmedabad. Pakistan also have same points as India and New Zealand after two games but are third on the point-table on net run rate. ODI World Cup 2023, IND vs AFG: From Rohit's fastest ton to Kohli's most runs in WC - All records broken

Star batter Shubman Gill has arrived in Ahmedabad ahead of India’s ODI World Cup contest against Pakistan on Saturday (Oct 14). Gill, out of the Indian team due to dengue was hospitalised in Chennai and was advised not to travel to Delhi for India’s second World Cup contest against Afghanistan on Wednesday. However, it is still thought that Gill won’t play the World Cup match as he is yet to be match-fit against the arch-rivals Pakistan.

Gill arrives in Ahmedabad

While the Indian team was playing against Afghanistan on Wednesday, Gill arrived in Ahmedabad to prepare for the clash. Gill spent a night at the Kaurvery Hospital in Chennai and returned to the hotel before taking the flight to Ahmedabad. It was advised by the doctors that Gill was good enough to take a flight to Ahmedabad as he could not fly to Delhi with his teammates because his platelet count was low and a flight journey was not advisable.

The rest of the Indian team is expected to arrive in Ahmedabad on Thursday evening as they prepare for the crunch clash. The team’s press conference takes place on Friday with a brief practice session scheduled for Thursday. The team will train with a full warm-up session on Friday, which will give a clear idea of how fit Gill will be.

It is thought that team management is not willing to take any risk with Gill, but will explore any opportunities if he trains on Friday. However, with no rush to get him back in the team, Ishan Kishan and skipper Rohit Sharma are likely to continue as the openers. India are expected to go unchanged from their winning combination against Australia and Afghanistan but could explore the possibility of using Ravichandran Ashwin.
