Team India opened their campaign in the ODI World Cup 2023 with a comfortable six-wicket win over Pat Cummins-led Australia in match 5 on Sunday (October 8) in Chennai. Being asked to bowl first at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, Rohit Sharma & Co. bundled out the Aussies for a paltry 199 in 49.3 overs with Ravindra Jadeja taking a three-fer whereas Kuldeep Yadav and Jasprit Bumrah returned with two wickets each. In reply, India were tottering at 2 for 3 before Virat Kohli's 85 and KL Rahul's unbeaten 97* took India home with 52 balls to spare.

After the match, Kohli received the best fielder of the match award in the team presentation in the dressing room. Kohli was proactive as ever in the field and accounted for two catches, removing Mitchell Marsh and Adam Zampa. Thus, the fielding coach T Dilip handed over the medal and revealed, in a BCCI video shared on all social media platforms, that the team management had been trying for a while to arrange laurels for fielding efforts. In addition, Dilip lauded Shreyas Iyer and Ishan Kishan for their overall fielding efforts.

Talking about India's fielding, everyone complemented the bowlers with some outstanding saves in the inner circle as well as in the deep. Thus, Australia could not even surpass the 200-run mark. Our bowlers used the conditions perfectly and we knew there would be assistance for everyone, even the seamers got some reverse, the spinners bowled in the nice areas and all in all it was a great effort. I was (nervous), you don't want to start your innings like that, credit to the Aussies bowlers as they bowled in good areas but some loose shots as well, when you have that kind of target you want to score as much as possible in the powerplay, but credit to Virat and KL on how they went about the chase. That is going to be the challenge for us as a team, moving to different conditions and adapting, whoever suits the conditions will have to come and do the job. Chennai never disappoints, they love their cricket and for them to sit in that heat and come out and cheer for the team says a lot."

CWC '23: Virat Kohli wins India's best fielder of the match, star batter's celebration goes viral - Watch

Star India opener and perhaps their best batter in form, Shubman Gill, continues to recover from dengue fever and may miss India’s next tie against Afghanistan in Delhi on Wednesday (Oct. 11), the sources close to the information told ANI. It means Ishan Kishan, who opened against Australia in Gill’s absence, will retain his place for the second match. However, given the pace at which he is recovering, Gill could return to the side ahead of the marquee clash against Pakistan in Ahmedabad on Saturday (Oct. 14).

Per the latest reports, Gill will stay with the team and travel to Delhi, not to Chandigarh, to his home for rest.

Although head coach Rahul Dravid, before India’s first match in this CWC, said Gill is not feeling exerted and doing fine. The source claimed any decision around his selection will be taken after the next medical tests in the coming days.

“Shubman Gill is recovering, and he will be travelling with the team to Delhi,” the source told ANI. “He will be with the team and is not likely to go to his home in Chandigarh for rest. We hope that he will be back on the field before the match against Pakistan, and playing against Afghanistan will depend on his next medical report.”

India missed Gill in Chennai chase

Having scored plenty of runs in 2023, hitting five ODI hundreds this year at home, Gill was the batter to look out for in the lead-up to the World Cup. However, he was detected with dengue fever during the warm-up games and was ruled out.

Ishan Kishan, who pressed his case for a spot in the XI with superb outings during the Asia Cup 2023, especially against Pakistan, opened alongside Captain Rohit Sharma against Australia.

While India was chasing a mediocre total of 200 on a dry Chepauk pitch, they got reduced to 2 for 3 inside the second over, with Ishan, Rohit and Shreyas Iyer departing on ducks.

Ishan got out on a golden duck while chasing a speedy outswinger off Mitchell Starc in the first over, edging it to the first slip. Josh Hazlewood trapped Rohit in front and dismissed Iyer, caught at covers in the next.

With déjà vu striking for India, they looked in trouble.

However, Virat Kohli and KL Rahul bailed them out and added 165 runs for the fourth wicket, resulting in the home side crossing the line with six wickets.

World Cup 2023 - Shubman Gill could return for Pakistan match, to stay with team during recovery

Dropping Virat Kohli, that too in a run chase, is a crime for any opposition. Mitchell Marsh was the offender in this case during the India-Australia World Cup clash in Chennai on Sunday. World Cup: Hazlewood defends Marsh over Kohli’s drop catch, backs Australia to bounce after Chennai slump

Virat Kohli (85) and KL Rahul (97 not out) brought India back in India's 2023 ODI World Cup match against Australia on October 8 in Chennai after the hosts were reduced to three down for two runs. The duo added 165 runs for the fourth wicket and took the game away from Australia. India eventually won the game by six wickets, reaching the target of 201 in 41.2 overs.

Speaking on what went wrong for Australia, WION's cricket expert and 1996 World Cup winning coach Dav Whatmore said that Kohli's drop was very crucial. Australia had a chance to get Kohli out when he top edged a bouncer from Josh Hazlewood in the eighth over of the innings but Mitchell Marsh couldn't hold on to it.

"The king of chase, they put him down at 12 and he went on to score 80 (85) runs. You can't do that if you want to win games against good teams," said Whatmore.

The former Australia cricketer, however, also said that Australia's didn't score enough runs first up despite starting off well.

"Australia didn't score enough runs. They started off okay but didn't get enough runs but the Indian spinners had a big say in that," said Whatmore.

David Warner (41) and Steve Smith (43) had added 69 runs for the second wicket after Mitchell Marsh was sent back for a duck early on. Kuldeep Yadav broke the Smith-Warner stand before Ravindra Jadeja took three wickets to leave Australia reeling five down for 119 in 30 overs.

Jadeja dismissed Smith with a peach before sending back Marnus Labuschagne and Alex Carey in the same over.

India, however, didn't start well either while chasing a modest 200 as they lost three quick wickets in Rohit Sharma, Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer.

"Yes, he could have stayed on for another over or two but that's academic," said Whatmore when asked if Mitchell Starc could have stayed on another a bit longer. Starc bowled three overs in his first spell and took the wicket of Kishan.

Watmore also said that the India batsmen should take more time before playing shots as Kishan and Iyer did, resulting in their dismissal.

"Take a bit of time. All three of them were rushing (to play shots). May be not Rohit so much as he got a good ball but Iyer and Kishan played not very good shots," added the former Aussie.

ODI World Cup 2023: 'You drop king of chase and...,' Dav Whatmore on what went wrong for Australia vs India

India defeated Australia by six wickets in match 5 of the CWC 2023 edition on Sunday (October 8) at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. This was the opening game for both sides in the marquee event, which kicked off on October 5 in Ahmedabad. Winning the toss, Pat Cummins-led Australia opted to bat and were well-placed at 110 for 2 before being reduced to 119 for 5 to be eventually bundled out for 199 in 49.3 overs. Ravindra Jadeja (3 for 28), Kuldeep Yadav (2 for 42) and Jasprit Bumrah (2 for 35) led the charge with the ball before Virat Kohli (85) and KL Rahul (97 not out) constructed a partnership to take India home.

Kohli and Rahul joined forces with India struggling at 2 for 3 before the duo added an impressive 165-run fourth-wicket stand to take India out of troubled waters and steer them to an easy win, with 52 balls remaining. After the clash, Rawalpindi Express Shoaib Akhtar lauded Rahul for his chanceless knock and hailed his fitness for keeping wickets and swift running between the wickets along with Kohli.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Akhtar said, "The way KL Rahul asserted his authority, he looks to be in a different league. Virat Kohli played a great innings but he could not play a chanceless innings. When KL Rahul was batting, he did not give any chance throughout his innings."

Akhtar further opined, "Rahul hit shots when it was needed, and soaked in pressure with the situation of the game was tough. Virat Kohli's dropped catch was the turning point yes, but KL Rahul giving stability was crucial. You play him at any number - in the middle order, and opening, he does well. Don't forget that he kept wickets as well just before this for 50 overs."

He added, "People laud Virat Kohli for his fitness and his running between the wickets, but KL Rahul is running with him too and also after keeping wickets and that needs to be talked about. KL Rahul is a complete player and needs to be backed throughout."

Rahul missed out on a hundred by finishing the match with a sublime six, off Cummins, when he was on 91. Nonetheless, his form bodes well for India who will now take on Afghanistan on Wednesday (October 11) in New Delhi.

In what has been a slow and low-scoring Australian innings, the Indian spin trio - Ravindra Jadeja (3 wickets), Kuldeep Yadav (2 wickets) and Ravichandran Ashwin (2 wickets) proved lethal and scalped a total of seven wickets.

In this effort, they were also assisted by pacer Jasprit Bumrah and all-rounder Hardik Pandya, who claimed one wicket each. The pace bowling spell of Mohammed Siraj (one wicket) also ably restricted the visitors' scoring rate.

The wicket haul by spinners is ample validation of team India's strategy of fielding three spinners for their match in Chennai, which is the first game in this World Cup for both participating teams. On Saturday, Indian skipper Rohit Sharma had hinted at the option of playing three spinners.

The visitors followed a cautious approach after losing opener Mitchell Marsh to pacer Bumrah, in the third over. Marsh hadn't even scored his first run by then. Thereafter, the partnership between David Warner (41runs) and Steve Smith (46runs) helped the team to notch up their score beyond 100, by the time they had batted almost 25 overs.

The scoring rate slowed down further between overs 25 and 50, when the Aussies lost eight more wickets. Despite having a stellar batting line-up and a vast experience of playing International and IPL games in Chennai, the visitors couldn't execute the big hits. There were just two sixes in the 300-ball game and a little over a dozen fours.

Going into the evening as Team India step into the chase, the Aussies could very well give the Indian batters a taste of their spin medicine. However, it isn't as easy as it sounds.

Australia will have to bank on their lone specialist spinner Adam Zampa with the assistance of all-rounders Glenn Maxwell and Steve Smith to trap the Indian batters with spin.

A lot would depend also on how the Indian top order batters make best use of the power play and ratchet up their score, to put the pressure on the bowling side.

If all goes well for India, 200 is not a huge total to chase down for an Indian batting line-up that has had a commendable track record in recent times.

If all goes well for India, 200 is not a huge total to chase down for an Indian batting line-up that has had a commendable track record in recent times. Cricket World Cup: Powered by spin trio, India bundle out Aussies for 199

It was Déjà vu for Team India in the ODI World Cup as they suffered an embarrassing start to their innings against Australia on Sunday (Oct 8). The contest at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai brought back memories of the 2019 World Cup semifinal for India where they were reduced to 5/3 against New Zealand, while this time it went bad to worse for them with 2/3 against a lethal Australian pace attack of Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood.

Déjà vu for India

Asked to chase 200 in their 50 overs, the Indian team had the worst possible start to their innings as they lost Ishan Kishan on the fourth ball of the innings. Things got even worse for the Men in Blue after skipper Rohit Sharma and Shreyas Iyer were also dismissed in a flash, reducing the hosts to 2/3 in a chaotic start. Interestingly, Ishan, Shreyas, and Rohit all were dismissed for duck.

Hazlewood and Starc were the chief architects of India’s destruction with KL Rahul and Virat Kohli then taking the proceedings to help India get back in the contest.

What happened in Australia’s innings?

Spinners headlined India’s ODI World Cup opener against Australia on Sunday (Oct 8) the Men in Blue restricted Australia to 199 runs in their innings. India, playing with three spinners in their first match of the World Cup, saw the decision justified as the trio of Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, and Kuldeep Yadav scalped wickets in tandem. India now need to chase down 200 runs to start on the front foot in the World Cup while they will be missing Shubman Gill in the batting department.

David Warner (41) and Steve Smith (46) would then stitch a 69-run stand for the second wicket before Kuldeep sent the former back to the pavilion. Smith and Labuschagne (27) then tried to bring the Aussies back on track before Ravindra Jadeja showed his class.

With Australia 140/7, the tail-enders showed good resilience to steer their side to 199 with India now needing to push with their batting line-up. Deja vu for Team India as Men in Blue suffer embarrassing start in ODI World Cup tie vs Australia

India’s Ravindra Jadeja has hit the ground running in the ongoing ODI World Cup 2023 after he dismissed former Australia skipper Steve Smith in a stunning fashion on Sunday (Oct 8). Jadeja, one of the star performers over the years for the Indian team, did not take time to make his presence felt at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai where India and Australia opened their World Cup campaigns. Smith’s dismissal came at the wrong time for the Aussies as he and Marnus Labuschagne were building a good partnership.

On the first ball of the 28th over, Jadeja stunned Smith with an outside the leg stump ball that surprised him before his stumps were castled. Smith was left stranded after his dismissal as he did not judge the flight of the ball. For Jadeja’s credit, he played the mind games to get the former skipper out on 46. The wicket also started Australia’s downfall as they would later lose Labuschagne (27) and Alex Carey (0).

Smith’s dismissal paved the way for India to dominate the contest having already dismissed Mitchell Marsh (0). ODI World Cup 2023: Aussies fall flat on Chennai track as Indian spinners dominate

Sensing the lack of spin bowling options in Australia's World Cup squad, seasoned off-spinner Nathan Lyon has revealed that he is on board with the idea of flying to India to play in the marquee tournament.

Lyon has now revealed that he sent a message to head coach Andrew McDonald, informing him that he was ready to feature in the 50-over World Cup.

"I sent Andrew McDonald a text message the other day when I saw Ashton Agar was ruled out," Lyon said.

"I said, 'Just to let you know, I'm back bowling 10 overs, I'm right to go, 100 per cent'. If that happened, I'd do anything to go over and play the World Cup."

Australia have come into the ODI World Cup light on spin bowling options with only Glenn Maxwell and Adam Zampa playing as the designated spinners in the opening match against India. Ashton Agar was ruled out of the squad after suffering an injury while part-timer Travis Head is back in Adelaide, recovering from a hand fracture.

Despite Zampa's experience of 85 ODIs as opposed to his 29, Lyon maintains confidence in his abilities.

"I'd be more than comfortable going in there and doing it if I had to," Lyon added.

"But in saying that, there has to be a lot of things go wrong, so let's hope for Australia's sake that doesn't happen. Hopefully, they go out there and have a really good campaign."

Nathan Lyon reveals his hopeful text message to head coach for playing in World Cup in India

India spinner Ravindra Jadeja rattled Australia with two wickets in an over during the ODI World Cup 2023 match in Chennai on October 8. Jadeja dismissed Marnus Labuschagne and Alex Carey in the 30th over of the Australian innings, shortly after sending back Steve Smith.

Australia were 119/3 in 29.1 overs when Labuschagne tried to sweep Jadeja but instead got an edge and wicketkeeper KL Rahul made no mistake behind the stumps. Carey then came to bat and lasted two balls as Jadeja trapped him Leg Before Wicket (LBW). Have a look at the wickets here:

ODI World Cup 2023: Watch India spinner Ravindra Jadeja's double-wicket over leaves Australia in dirt

Indian skipper Rohit Sharma hinted at including three spinners in the team that would be taking on Australia, in what will be the first match for both teams in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023. The Indian spin trio comprises Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja and Kuldeep Yadav. Being held in Chennai, this will be the 150th International cricket contest between India and Australia. Notably, Ashwin hails from Chennai and Ravindra Jadeja has a great deal of experience playing at this pitch, thanks to his longstanding association with the IPL franchise Chennai Super Kings.

In the pre-match presser, Rohit expressed confidence ahead of Sunday's game and shared that the team had come well prepared. "It means a lot to even be a part of the World Cup team, and getting to captain the side is something I don't know how to describe," he said. Referring to the captaincy bestowed upon him as a huge honour, Rohit said that his sixteen-year long experience would come handy in handling the pressure of playing the World Cup before a home crowd.

In March 2023, Australia had defeated India at Chennai in what was the third and final match of their ODI series in India. They had defeated India by 21 runs and bagged the series 2-1. Commenting on the earlier match, Rohit acknowledged that the team knows what went wrong and it is crucial to not repeat the same mistakes. On the pitch conditions, Rohit said that the pitch in Chennai is known to be tricky, undergo a lot of changes and pose challenges. However, he said that the heat, humidity was lesser compared to that of March.

South Africa start on a high

1996 champions Sri Lanka were tasked to chase a record total of 429 runs as batters scored runs left, right, and centre. Chasing the target, Sri Lanka lost Pathum Nissanka (0) in the first over, putting a spanner in the work while Kusal Perera (7) was also judged LBW, but used the DRS to remain at the helm. Kusal Mendis (76) would then take charge of the side that qualified from the qualifiers. He along with Sadeera Samarawickrama (23) led the Lanka side to the triple-figure mark.

Interestingly, with the gap slipping away from Sri Lanka Charith Asalanka (79) played an important role as he helped his side steer past 200. Later in the innings, skipper Dasun Shanaka (68) played a handy knock along with Dasun Shanaka (33) to help Sri Lanka reduce the deposit of the defeat. It was a valiant effort by Lanka, despite them chasing a mountainous 429 runs in the hot conditions of Delhi.

Gerald Coetzee was the pick of the bowlers with three wickets while the trio of Marco Jansen, Kagiso Rabada, and Keshav Maharaj ended with two scalps each.

Earlier in the South Africa innings, Quinton de Kock (100), Rassie van der Dussen (108), and Aiden Markram (106) scored tons to lead their side to 428/5. The day turned out to be a record outing for the Proteas as they amassed the highest total for any team in an ODI World Cup match while they also became the first team to have three centurions in the same innings of a World Cup contest. Markram broke the record for the fastest ton in the ODI World Cup, reaching the triple-figure mark in 49 deliveries. His heroics led his side to a well-deserved win in Delhi.

South Africa will next take the field on Thursday (Oct 12) against five-time champions Australia in Lucknow while Sri Lanka will look to bounce back against Pakistan in Hyderabad on Tuesday.

Jasprit Bumrah bowled brilliantly as he sent back Australia opener Mitchell Marsh back for a duck in India's opening game of the ODI World Cup 2023 in Chennai on Sunday (October 8). Former India skipper Virat Kohli also played his part as he took a brilliant catch in the slips to support the bowler.

Indian seamers, Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj, had started well by keeping the lines tight and not giving any room to the Aussie batters to free their arm. In the third over of the innings Bumrah came on to bowl to Marsh and sent a length ball outside off. The Aussie batter edged it to the slips while trying to defend and Kohli did rest of the work. ODI World Cup 2023: Ravi Ashwin picked, Gill miss out as Australia bat first against India in Chennai

India coach Rahul Dravid couldn't win an ODI World Cup in his illustrious career but being knocked out of 2007 edition in the group stage when he was the skipper remains the biggest dark spot of his playing days. The cricketer-turned-coach, however, has moved on from his playing days and focuses on helping the current group.

“It's a long time since I was a player. I almost forgot that I was actually a cricket player at one stage to be very honest with you,” Dravid said during a press conference ahead of India's match against Australia on October 8 in Chennai.

“I have moved on from that. I don't think of myself as a player anymore. Maybe that's the mind-space difference... I'm focused on helping the group to do the best they can," he added.

“I mean in the end that's the job of the support staff, the job of the coach really is to support the vision of the captain and help him execute his vision over the course of the next couple of months and hope we can do that really well.”

In case of Gill's absence Ishan Kishan could open the innings for India with skipper Rohit Sharma.

ODI World Cup 2023: India coach Rahul Dravid opens up on 2007 setback ahead of Australia game

Afghanistan spinner Mujeeb-ur-Rahman escaped from suffering a serious knee injury, while Azmat Omarzai tumbled over while fielding during Afghanistan’s World Cup opener against Bangladesh in Dharamsala on Saturday. Such instances raised questions over the ground’s outfield, which, in the past, had remained under question for similar reasons. Afghanistan spinner Mujeeb-ur-Rahman escaped from suffering a serious knee injury, while Azmat Omarzai tumbled over while fielding during Afghanistan’s World Cup opener against Bangladesh in Dharamsala on Saturday. World Cup: Mujeeb escaped serious knee injury, Afghanistan’s head coach criticises Dharamsala outfield

Australia skipper Pat Cummins has opened up on his team’s tactics as they prepare for the crunch clash against India in the ODI World Cup on Sunday (Oct 8) at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. Cummins will look to put behind the recent disappointments against India while insisting his team has plans to counter the opposition. India are expected to play with three spinners which could be a big headache for Australia.

Cummins commits to plan vs India

“It's no doubt helpful playing a lot here, not only for Australia but IPL. I've probably played more white-ball cricket in India than I have in Australia over the last 10 years, so it's conditions we know really well. And I think the positive thing is that we've played some really good one-day cricket against India over here over the last few years so we can draw back on that,” said Cummins.

India skipper Rohit Sharma on the eve of the clash in Chennai spoke on the team’s plan where he hinted at making use of three spinners. If this is the case, the Men in Blue could make use of Ravichandran Ashwin, Kuldeep, and Ravindra Jadeja in the same Playing XI.

“Yeah, they're a good bowling lineup, especially here in home conditions. So, they're going to be challenging. The good thing is we've played them a lot. So, our batters will have their plans. And again, we've had success against them a few times. They've bowled well against us a few times as well,” Cummins added.

India and Australia recently squared off in a three-match ODI series, where the home side emerged victorious 2-1. India are expected to be without Shubman Gill who is suffering from dengue and has not trained with the side. His availability remains a big issue for Team India despite having notable players as back-up. It is understood, that if Gill is not available, Ishan Kishan will open with skipper Rohit while there will be room for either Suryakumar Yadav or Shreyas Iyer in the Playing XI.

ODI World Cup 2023: Pat Cummins downplays India's spin attack, says 'batters will have their own plans'

A flurry of Cricket World Cup records went down the drain as South Africa posted 428 for five – the highest team total in the tournament’s history. Alongside this, Aiden Markram also recorded the fastest hundred by a batter in just 49 balls in CWC.

Asked to bat first after losing the toss, Sri Lanka got the Protean Captain Temba Bavuma trapped in front early on seven. Quinton de Kock and Rassie van der Dussen began the onslaught from the word go as South Africa looked determined to go all-out in this match. The left-right combination worked wonders for the team as they kept finding gaps at will.

In the absence of the star spin duo of Maheesh Theekshana and Wanindu Hasaranga (who is out of the World Cup with an injury), the Sri Lanka Team had Dunith Wellalage and Dhananjaya de Silva as their spin-bowling options, both of whom went for runs.

Playing his last World Cup, De Kock left no stone unturned in his efforts to maximise his chances of scoring big when it matters. While van der Dussen looked like reaching the three-digit mark in the first place, de Kock’s super-aggressive approach saw him complete the first hundred for his team in this World Cup. De Kock departed soon after, while Van der Dussen hit his maiden hundred of this edition.

Markram treats Delhi with special knock

However, the real action began after that, as Aiden Markram, another Protean in form, alongside Heinrich Klaasen – perhaps the most-sorted player of spin bowling in world cricket, broke Sri Lanka’s back with their power hitting.

Markram, who came off from a brilliant home series against Australia, upped the striking rate and hit each bowler to all parts of the ground. Before many could realise, he was in his nineties and soon after reached a World Cup hundred in just 49 balls – the fastest in the tournament’s history.

In the meantime, Klaasen had lost his wicket, while David Miller and Marco Jansen took over the proceedings in the final overs.

South Africa crossed the 400-run-mark for the third time in the tournament’s history, becoming the first team to do so, as they posted a gigantic 428 for five in 50 overs.

For Sri Lanka to win this match, they need to score 429 runs.
