<p>Gujarat Titans skipper Hardik Panyda said his team made basic errors despite being spot on with the ball and that's why they lost the first qualifier against Chennai Super Kings.</p>

<p>After electing to field first, GT restricted CSK to a modest 172 on a dry Chepauk pitch but kept losing wickets at regular intervals and eventually lost the game by 15 runs.</p>

<p>"I think we were quite spot on [with the ball], but we made basic errors. And I think that cost us the game. After the first innings, the kind of wicket and at the same point of time the kind of bowlers we had, I felt we exactly went 15 runs above the score where we should have stopped them," said Pandya after the loss.</p>

<h2><strong>Bowled a couple of soft balls</strong></h2>

<p>Pandya, while praising his bowlers, said that GT bowled a couple of soft balls in between, and also that dew which GT were hoping for never came in.</p>

<p>"A lot of things we did right. I think it's just that we bowled a couple of soft balls in between. We were executing quite some plans and all of a sudden in between we gave some runs ... where we must have given soft balls," said Pandya.</p>

<h2><strong>CSK at top of their game</strong></h2>

<p>Having set a target of 173 for GT, CSK looked in complete command of the contest as they dealt LSG early blows. GT lost Wriddhiman Saha (12) and Hardik Pandya (8) in the powerplay as Deepak Chahar and Maheesh Theekshana were spot-on with their approach with the ball. Despite this, Shubman Gill’s well-made 42 was the highlight of the GT innings but other players failed to produce big innings.</p>

<p>With GT batters failing to impress, it was CSK bowlers that rose to the occasion as four bowlers ended with two wickets each – Chahar, Theekshana, Ravindra Jadeja and Matheesha Pathirana. Tushar Deshpande ended with a wicket as well. Only five GT batters got in double figures as they were bowled out for 157 and were never in the contest.</p>

<h2><strong>What happened in the CSK innings?</strong></h2>

<p>Mohammed Shami and Mohit Sharma bagged two wickets each as Gujarat Titans restricted Chennai Super Kings to 172/7 in 20 overs at MA Chidambaram Stadium in the first qualifier match of the league. Ruturaj Gaikwad top scored for CSK scoring 60 from 44 balls.</p>

<p>Put into bat, Chennai Super Kings lost the wicket of Ruturaj Gaikwad with only five runs on the board. Darshan Nalkande got the wicket of Gaikwad but his celebration was short-lived as umpire called it a no ball. After that, Gaikwad and Devon Conway batted well and helped CSK put on 49 without the loss of any wicket in the first six overs of powerplay.</p>

<p>CSK will now await the winner of Qualifier 2 where they can yet again face GT while five-time champions Mumbai Indians are also in contention. LSG will host MI in the Eliminator clash on Wednesday while the winner will face GT on Friday.</p>

<p>CSK will now play in the IPL final on May 28, 2023 against one of the three teams - Gujarat, Lucknow Super Giants or Mumbai Indians.</p>

<p>Defending champions Gujarat Titans are all set to face Chennai Super Kings in the first qualifier of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023, in Chennai. The teams, which finished 1-2, respectively, on the points table would like to cement a place in the final with a win, circumventing the path that goes through the second qualifier.</p>

<p>Before the match, Gujarat Titans, however, shared a video on their social media that showed the camaraderie between the two skippers - GT's Gujarat Giants and CSK's Mahendra Singh Dhoni.</p>

<p>"I'll always be a Mahendra Singh Dhoni fan and for so many fans out there and so many cricket lovers. You need to be a proper devil to hate Mahendra Singh Dhoni. A lot of people think Mahi is serious and all that. For me, I crack jokes and I don't see him as a Mahendra Singh Dhoni," Pandya said in the video.</p>

<p>This comes amid wide speculations of Dhoni getting retired at the end of the season. The match, even if lost by Chennai, won't be the last one Dhoni would be playing as the losing team of the first qualifier will get another shot at making it to the IPL Final.</p>
