In 'Thalaivii', Ranaut essays the role of former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa. The film narrates her relationship with MGR, played by Arvind Swami and her rise to power in Tamil Nadu. Jayalalithaa died in December 2016 after 75 days of hospitalisation.

Recently, AIADMK in Tamil Nadu objected to certain references about party stalwarts--the late MG Ramachandran and J Jayalalithaa in 'Thalaivii', and wanted the scenes deleted. Senior AIADMK leader D Jayakumar said such references were factually incorrect and insisted that barring these flaws the film was well-made.

After Hrithik Roshan posts on Aryan Khan, Kangana Ranaut says 'All mafia pappu coming to his defence'

On Thursday, Hollywood star Ryan Reynolds shared a video-recorded message for his Indian fans.

The video was released via 20th Century Studios India's YouTube account, where the actor joked about how Hollywood is now shamelessly mimicking Bollywood and urged his fans to watch his latest offering, 'Free Guy'.

"Hello India. Kangana Ranaut to play the title role in 'Incarnation of Sita'

Kangana Ranaut starrer, 'Thalaivii', touted as a biopic of late Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa, has some "factual errors", AIADMK leader and former minister D. Jayakumar said on Friday. Read our review here
Talking to media persons after watching the movie, directed by A. L. Vijay and having Arvind Swami and Nasser in prominent roles, at a Chennai theatre, Jayakumar said that the movie is a well crafted one, except for a few scenes on former Chief Minister and AIADMK founder-leader, late M.G. Ramachandran, fondly known as MGR, as also on Jayalalithaa.

Citing a scene wherein MGR wanted to become a minister in the first DMK government led by C.N. Annadurai and that it was later Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi who blocked him, Jayakumar said that MGR had never sought positions.

He said that Annadurai wanted MGR to be made a minister but he himself refused and was subsequently made deputy Chief of the Small Savings Department, which was a new post. Jayakumar said that after the passing away of Annadurai in 1969, it was MGR who suggested the name of Karunanidhi for the Chief Minister's post.
MGR and Karunanidhi subsequently parted ways in 1972 with the former announcing the formation of the AIADMK.

Jayakumar also said that there were scenes showing Jayalalithaa developing contacts with both Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi without MGR's knowledge, and said that this was untrue and that she never went against her leader.
He said that there were also scenes where MGR was seen belittling Jaya, which was also not true.
Some factual errors in Kangana Ranaut starrer Jayalalithaa biopic 'Thalaivii', says AIADMK leader

Kangana Ranaut starrer 'Thalaivii' has arrived in theatres finally, but here's a disappointment for the makers.

Kangana and the makers of the film constantly struggled and waited for the perfect date to release it in theatres amid the pandemic. Few hours after its big release, the movie has reportedly leaked on torrent sites and other networks that enable piracy. Read our review here
According to reports, the film is available for free streaming on various piracy websites like Tamilrockerz, Movierulz, Telegram. The film revolves around the life and rise to power of Jayalalithaa who ruled the hearts of people as she became the Chief Minister of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Read our review here According to reports, the film is available for free streaming on various piracy websites like Tamilrockerz, Movierulz, Telegram. Jayalalitha's biopic is not the first movie to face the brunt of piracy, unfortunately, almost all big blockbusters get leaked online a few hours after the release. Kangana also had an ugly fight with theatre's owners, who raised questions over the short time gap between its theatrical and digital release. The film revolves around the life and rise to power of Jayalalithaa who ruled the hearts of people as she became the Chief Minister of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Known fondly as Amma by the people of Tamil Nadu, Kangana aces her act like the demure girl who started her career in films and then became a force in the male-dominated political world. The film's release date got pushed amid the second wave of COVID-19. 'Thalaivii' finally released in theatres on September 10. Meanwhile, Kangana recently detailed her filming experience, playing Thalaivii on reel life and the ongoing controversy around multiplexes not releasing the film in major metro cities. She spoke to WION about the need to discourage Hollywood films and promoting our Indian regional film industries instead. Read more here.

Kangana Ranaut's 'Thalaivii' leaked online hours after its theatrical release

Kangana Ranaut may have been been in headlines in the recent past for reasons other than her films, but there is no denying the fact that when she is given a good script, she delivers. Time and again, Ranaut has proved her mettle and her versatility in the simplest of the stories. In her latest, 'Thalaivii' takes on a tough role and essays one of the strongest women in Indian politics, J Jayalalithaa. But does Kangana deliver? Only in parts.

Directed by Vijay, 'Thalaivii' sets out documenting J Jayalalithaa's tryst in politics, her closeness to MGR and subsequent rise as the leader of AIADMK and the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. And while the elements of a great biopic are all there- the film falters due to a very weak screenplay that does nothing to tap into Ranaut's talent as an actor. Instead, it presents Ranaut as herself and in so many scenes she is just playing haughty star that she has become who blows her own trumpet at the drop of a hat. Even some of the dialogues seem to just pad up Kangana's recently created image of a self-made star who doesn't need anyone to prove her worth in the film industry.

The late Jayalalithaa was known for her ability to break into a largely male-dominated political arena and create her powerful position there- so much so that the men who at one point of time shunned her, bowed down to her in respect and fear as she became the CM. There is a lot of material available of the late politician and writer KV Vijayendra Prasad never really delves deeper and instead present the known facts in a more dramatised manner in 'Thalaivi'. The result is that the film never hits you or leaves an impact about the leader, instead, it presents Kangana in a larger than life persona. Rajat Arora's melodramatic lines just accentuate Kangana's star persona and does nothing to aid the actual story.

'Thalaivii' also highlights MGR and Jayalalitha's relationship - which is also very much in the public domain. The first half is spent in establishing the bond that the two shared and how Jayalalithaa as a newbie in the film industry was made comfortable by then the legend MGR. Their affair too is never explicitly detailed in the film and it is mostly suggestive, perhaps keeping in mind the sentiments attached to the two stalwarts. In one of the early scenes in the film, Jayalalithaa - as the leader of the opposition - is questioned about her relationship with the late leader and heckled in the state assembly by DMK party leaders. The scenes appear twice but nowhere does Kangana's character answer the burning question. In other occasions their love is explained with spiritual metaphors- 'God cannot be loved by one, God is loved by all," says MGR in one scene. In another Jayalalithaa compares herself to Radha, Lord Krishna's favourite consort.

Not just their love story, the film never really attempts to dig deeper into how the former CM of Tamil Nadu paved her way in politics. The screenplay mostly skirts around incidents and leaves a lot to the interpretation of the audience. From MGR and Jayalalithaa's mid-day meal schemes to their alliance with Congress to her campaigning while still recovering from a serious accident- all are shown but none in great detail.

While the film is about Kangana Ranaut playing Jayalalitha, it is Arvind Swami who shines the most as MGR and gets the late leader's mannerisms perfectly. It is also a delight to watch Swami in a full-fledged role after a long time. There is Madhoo who plays Janaki Amma and while her scenes are limited, pairing the former 'Roja' couple brings back memories of the 90s. The other actor who delivers is Raj Arora who plays MGR's right-hand man Veerappan and who dislikes Jayalalithaa's closeness with his leader. The other actors - especially the women- have limited screen time because only one woman is allowed to shine.

Kangana meanwhile, has her moments playing the leader but poor writing and her star status prove to be hindrances. Despite the prosthetics, the makeup - we get flashes Kangana the star, who delivers sermons and gyaan on social media often these days or who struts out of the airport waving at the camera with Z plus security surrounding her. The actor in her takes a backseat.

The background score is ear-splittingly loud and too dramatic and always plays out victory music when Kangana is on screen - which is a tad unnecessary.

Is 'Thalaivii' Kangana's best performance to date? No. But it documents a leader's life whose journey has been inspirational (sometimes even questionable) for a generation that may not be too familiar with Tamil Nadu and its politics.
Bombay HC quashes Kangana Ranaut's plea against defamation case filed by Javed Akhtar

Bollywood actress Kangana Ranaut’s 'Thalaivii', which is the biopic of Indian actor-turned-politician Jayalalithaa, is releasing on September 10 in Telugu, Tamil, and Hindi.

And for getting her act right for the movie, Kangana Ranaut had to dive into the life of the late Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu.

“I do not know much about Jaya Amma before doing the film. It is very difficult to make a film on her because Tamil people know about everything in her life. So, there is no chance of cinematic liberties. I tried to get into her shoes to decide why she took a decision at a particular time,” Ranaut was quoted as saying.

“Jayalalithaa is a great Bharata Natyam dancer. She even gave many performances. So, I learned the dance for the movie. It is not easy to play her because she looks different in four phases of her life. Decreasing and increasing weight for the same film is not easy. AL Vijay is a talented director and has extreme clarity about what he is doing. Producers should be appreciated for holding the movie despite getting several fancy offers from OTT,” the 'Queen' actress went on to add.

In the interview, Kangana went on to express her disappointment over Multiplex Association's decision not to screen the film in Hindi. “On one side, we are trying to help the theaters survive. They should behave responsibly. They allowed Radhe simultaneous release. It looks like they are being partial here. Gender-bias and groupism is not good for the industry,” she reportedly said.

Kangana Ranaut requests Maharashtra government to open theatres ahead of 'Thalaivii' premiere

Kangana Ranaut's upcoming and one of the most awaited movies 'Thalaivii' is facing major backlash over the short time gap between its theatrical and digital release.

Ranaut earlier responded to the matter and requested the multiplex owners for ‘Thalaivii’s screening. Now, in the latest update the multiplexes have decided to screen her forthcoming film in Tamil and Telugu versions but not in Hindi.

Theatres unhappy with 'Thalaivii' makers, demand four-week gap between its premiere on theatres and OTT

After the statement was released, the Gangster actress penned a gratitude note reading, ''PVR’s decision to screen the Tamil and Telugu versions of the film is a ray of hope for Team Thalaivii as well as all those cinegoers who are waiting to rush back to their favourite multiplex chain for a cinematic experience.''

Kangana Ranaut pays homage at the J Jayalalithaa memorial in Marina beach

''I am personally moved by the kind words used for me and Team 'Thalaivii', and I hope with talks, and a passion for the theatrical experience, we can come together to find a solution so that the Hindi version can also find love and appreciation on the big screen''.

Responding to the situation, PVR Cinemas released a statement requesting to keep a uniform window of 4 weeks across all language versions.

'' 'Thalaivii' is one of the most keenly awaited films. Also, Ms Kangana Ranaut’s acting prowess and exceptional box office pull are well-established facts. We are thankful to the Thalaivii team for offering a 4-week theatrical window for its Tamil and Telugu language versions. We are delighted to be able to play 'Thalaivii' in Tamil and Telugu language at our cinemas, however, we are disappointed that for the Hindi language version, the 'Thalaivii' team has decided to offer only a 2-week window. We would like to appeal to Ms Kangana Ranaut, Mr Vishnu Induri & Mr Shailesh Singh to keep a uniform window of 4 weeks across all language versions and therefore allow all cinemas across the country to showcase 'Thalaivii' to audiences, on the big screen.'' The statement reads.

Kangana Ranaut's upcoming and one of the most awaited movies 'Thalaivii' is facing major backlash over the short time gap between its theatrical and digital release.

Theatres unhappy with 'Thalaivii' makers, demand four-week gap between its premiere on theatres and OTT After the statement was released, the Gangster actress penned a gratitude note reading, ''PVR’s decision to screen the Tamil and Telugu versions of the film is a ray of hope for Team Thalaivii as well as all those cinegoers who are waiting to rush back to their favourite multiplex chain for a cinematic experience.'' Kangana Ranaut pays homage at the J Jayalalithaa memorial in Marina beach ''I am personally moved by the kind words used for me and Team 'Thalaivii', and I hope with talks, and a passion for the theatrical experience, we can come together to find a solution so that the Hindi version can also find love and appreciation on the big screen''. We would like to appeal to Ms Kangana Ranaut, Mr Vishnu Induri & Mr Shailesh Singh to keep a uniform window of 4 weeks across all language versions and therefore allow all cinemas across the country to showcase 'Thalaivii' to audiences, on the big screen.'' Kangana Ranaut to make OTT debut in the Indian version of 'Temptation Island'

The Regional Passport Office (RPO) here told the Bombay High Court on Monday it will "expeditiously" decide on renewing Kangana Ranaut's passport once the actor made requisite corrections in her application for the key travel document.

Additional Solicitor General (ASG) Anil Singh, who appeared for the RPO, told a bench of Justices SS Shinde and Revati Mohite-Dere that the application that Ranaut had submitted with the passport office in Mumbai, had factual inconsistencies. He said that for instance, her application said that she had criminal cases pending against her.

However, only an FIR had been registered against her and criminal proceedings in the said case were yet to begin, Singh said. Singh told the HC that if Ranaut's counsel, advocate Rizwan Siddiquee, clarified the same before the court, and if the actor made the necessary corrections in her application, the passport office would consider her plea and take an expeditious decision as per procedure. The bench accepted Singh's statement.

"The learned ASG on instructions submits that application does not mention the correct facts, inasmuch as, it is stated in the said application that criminal cases are pending against the petitioner (Ranaut), when in fact only FIRs are registered against the petitioner," the HC observed.

"He (Singh) submits that in case the learned counsel appearing for the petitioner is ready to make a statement that no criminal case is pending against the petitioner and make appropriate corrections in the pending application before the Respondent Passport Authority, the said Authority is ready to consider the application for renewal of passport, in accordance with the Passport Act/rules/ procedure, expeditiously," the HC said in its order.

Advocate Siddiquee then clarified that no criminal proceedings were pending against Ranaut. He also agreed to make the necessary corrections in Ranaut's application.

Ranaut had filed an interim application in the HC earlier this month, saying she needed to travel to Budapest (Hungary) this month for the shooting of her upcoming film 'Dhakkad' and thus, needed her passport renewed.

The actor said in her plea that the renewal had been denied by the passport office on the ground that she and her sister Rangoli Chandel had an FIR registered against them by the suburban Bandra police last year on charges of sedition and for alleged hateful tweets.

She said in her plea that the RPO had raised an objection to renew or reissue her passport because of the said FIR. On the previous hearing last week, advocate Siddiquee had said the shooting of the film had been scheduled already and the its producers were losing money due to the delay in the shoot because of the actor's inability to travel to Budapest.

On Monday, the bench of Justices Shinde and Mohite-Dere accepted the statements made by ASG Singh and advocate Siddiquee, and accordingly disposed of Ranaut's interim application.

"In the light of statement made by Mr Siddiquee, learned counsel appearing for the petitioner, Mr Anil Singh, learned ASG, submits that the application filed by the petitioner for renewal of passport will be decided as expeditiously as possible, in accordance with relevant provisions of the Passport Act/rules/procedures," the bench said.
