India Election 2024: Kangana Ranaut meets JP Nadda over derogatory post

Controversy and Kangana Ranaut often go hand-in-hand. The Bollywood star made her political debut recently as she joined the Bharatiya Janata Party. She will be contesting from Mandi in Himachal Pradesh in the upcoming General Elections 2024 on a BJP ticket. Hours after Kangana's induction to the party was announced, Congress leader Supriya Shrinate's Instagram shared a post featuring the actress with an objectionable comment.

The post was pulled down after many deemed it inappropriate and misogynist. Later, Shrinate shared a video message on social media that her account was accessed by someone else and the post was not shared by her.

Kangana too reacted to Shrinate's post by stating, "We must free our daughters from the shackles of prejudices, we must rise above the curiosity about their body parts and above all we must refrain from using sex workers challenging lives or circumstances as some kind of abuse or slur… every woman deserves her dignity…"

Kangana, however, has not been new to controversy. In recent years, the actress has created headlines with her controversial remarks on social media as well as in interviews.

Here's a look at the top 7 controversies of Kangana Ranaut.

Calling Karan Johar the flag bearer of nepotism on Koffee With Karan

While appearing in one of the episodes of Koffee with Karan, Kangana termed Karan Johar, the host of the chat show and noted Indian fimmaker as "flag bearer of nepotism", which sparked a huge debate in the entirety of Bollywood.

Commenting on the freedom of India in 1947

Another comment made by the actress that led to huge uproar was her remark on India's independence. At a news summit in 2021, Kangana said, "The freedom we got in 1947 was a 'bheekh' (alms), the citizens of India got real freedom in 2014." While Kangana's reference to PM Modi's tenure was evident, she also was criticised for dismissing the efforts of several freedom fighters.

Spreading hate and account suspension on Twitter

The same year, an FIR was filed against Kangana for allegedly spreading hate propaganda and inciting communal violence in West Bengal.

The complaint stated that the actor had maligned the image of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. The police filed a case against Kangana after she took a direct dig at Banerjee while responding to the post-poll violence in West Bengal. Her remarks led to the suspension of her X (then Twitter) account for provoking anger and violence. The account was restored only two years later.

Urmila Matondkar, a ‘soft porn star’

In 2020, Kangana called actress-turned-politician Urmila Matondkar 'a soft porn star' while speaking to a news channel. Urmila was back then a Congress Party leader and had contested the the 2019 elections. Kangana made the statement against Urmila, then a Congress leader, during a TV interview.

When she was asked about her political aspirations, Kangana responded saying if Urmila, who according to her was only known for her ‘soft porn films’, could get an election ticket, why couldn’t she? The comment after Urmila had called Kangana out for her comments on veteran actress Jaya Bachchan.

Her relationship with Hrithik Roshan

This was perhaps the ugliest. Bollywood actor Hrithik Roshan slapped a legal case against Kangana after she called him a 'silly ex'. Kangana Ranaut had claimed that the two had an affair while working for Krrish 3 which Roshan denied. Several leaked emails from both sides followed and they both gave multiple interviews to prove their point of the story to various media channels.

Comparing Mumbai to Pakistan

In 2020, she faced severe backlash and a legal notice after she stated that Mumbai police "haunts her more than the mafias of Bollywood". She then compared Mumbai to Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). This led to a political turbulence, and the involvement of the then Maharashtra chief minister Uddhav Thackeray. A municipal crew paid a surprise visit to Kangana's production house, and issued her a notice for illegal construction, and later even carried out a demolition drive.

Threats to sue Filmfare for nominating her

In 2022, Kangana reportedly threatened the leading film magazine Filmfare for persistently nominating and inviting the actress for her film Thalaivii.

She took to her Instagram story and wrote, "I've banned unethical, corrupt and totally unfair practices like @filmfare since 2014, but since I have been getting many calls from them for attending their award function this year as they want to give me award for Thalaivii... I am shocked to know that they are still nominating me."

It should happen: Vikas Bahl on making a sequel of Queen

The Bombay High Court on Friday dismissed actor Kangana Ranaut's plea seeking a stay on the proceedings of a defamation complaint filed against her by lyricist Javed Akhtar. A single bench of Justice P D Naik said the trial in the complaint filed by Javed Akhtar had already commenced, and hence, the relief sought by Kangana Ranaut could not be granted at this stage.

Last month, the actor filed a petition in the high court seeking a stay on Akhtar's criminal defamation complaint filed in 2020 and prayed for the case to be heard along with the cross-complaint she subsequently filed against him.

"The trial in the complaint by Akhtar has already commenced. The applicant (Ranaut) has preferred this application at a belated stage. Akhtar's complaint is first in point of time and process (notice) has been issued. Considering the factual matrix, no relief can be granted," the court said.

While the defamation case Akhtar filed against Ranaut is ongoing before the magistrate in Andheri, the sessions court has stayed the latter's complaint against the lyricist.

Ranaut, in her petition, stated that both cases had their genesis in a meeting (between Ranaut and Akhtar) in 2016, and hence, they should be tried together.

The lyricist opposed the petition and, in an affidavit through his advocate Jay Bharadwaj, said that Ranaut has not challenged any order passed by the magistrate's court and has, without any basis, sought a stay on the proceedings.

Akhtar had alleged that it was an attempt to delay the proceedings on his defamation complaint.

In his complaint, the lyricist had claimed that Ranaut defamed and damaged his "immaculate reputation" by dragging his name into actor Sushant Singh Rajput's death in her interview with a news channel in July 2020.

In 2021, Ranaut hit back by filing a counter-complaint against Akhtar before a magistrate's court, alleging criminal intimidation and insult to modesty.

Also read: The Crew first look out! Kareena Kapoor Khan, Tabu, Kriti Sanon's film to release on this day The lyricist opposed the petition and, in an affidavit through his advocate Jay Bharadwaj, said that Ranaut has not challenged any order passed by the magistrate's court and has, without any basis, sought a stay on the proceedings. The actor had alleged that during her meeting with the lyricist at his residence in 2016, he had criminally intimidated her demanding that she apologise to a co-star.

Union Minister for Women and Child Development Smriti Irani caused a huge stir after she opposed the paid menstruation leave policy, stating that the menstruation cycle is "not a illness or handicap". Irani's comment in Rajya Sabha has garnered strong reactions from the people. However, recently, actress Kangana Ranaut has come out in support of Irani. On Thursday, (Dec 15), Kangana took to her Instagram handle to share a long note in support of Irani's comment. Opposing the period leave, the actress wrote on Instagram that, 'working woman is a myth''. Kangana, who has never shied away from keeping her views forward, wrote, “Working woman is a myth, there hasn’t been a single non-working woman in the history of mankind, from farming to house chores to raising kids, women have always been working and nothing has come in the way of their commitment to their families or community or nation. Unless it’s some specific medical condition, women don’t need paid leaves for periods, please understand it’s periods not some illness or handicap.” Sunny Deol praises Bobby’s performance, says he ‘did not like certain things’ in Animal What has Smriti Irani said about the menstruation leave policy?
Tanu Weds Manu is returning for a third part. Kangana Ranaut, the film's leading lady, confirmed that she was indeed making a comeback as the beloved Tanu in part 3 of the film.

In a conversation with IMDb, Kangana was asked about her next projects. To this, she responded, "I am starting a thriller with Vijay Sethupathi sir. And a film called Noti Binodini. And another film called Tanu Weds Manu 3."

When asked to name a director who she would like to work with again, Kangana mentioned, “I would want to work with Anand L. Rai ji again, who did Tanu Weds Manu Returns. I don’t get to do too many comedies. I was telling sir that, for me, it was never like a film. It was a picnic that I was a part of. All my films are always so intense. I just kind of need a break, probably that’s why.”
Kangana Ranaut’s second acting project of the year Tejas has hit cinemas on October 27. The film's story focuses on Tejas Gill, an Indian Air Force pilot.

When asked what about her character Tejas drew her towards the movie, Kangana said, “My character Tejas is a new-age warrior. She’s an IAF pilot, a fighter pilot, who protects the country. I relate a lot with women who are very strong, warrior women. I have played fighter women in the past as well. Everything about Tejas is so wonderful and I think I am born to play this character. As an actor, you’re a very small part of the whole process but as an individual, it was very satisfying for me. On an emotional level, it was very cathartic to me as a person to be able to do this role and I have huge respect for soldiers. I myself want to give an ode to the spirit of a soldier. With Tejas, I got an opportunity to do just that.”
In her review, WION's Shomini Sen praised Kangana Ranaut's performance in Tejas but blamed the makers for a sloppy story. "If the plot doesn't feel illogical by this point in time to you, I must assure you that it becomes worse as the film nosedives into a jingoistic agenda and sticks to the narrative that many 'nationalists' seem to throw on anyone wanting to have a healthy debate on the concept of patriotism with a standard line - 'What about our soldiers who are fighting at the border?'.Taking this catchphrase, Mewara creates an entire narrative in the second half, especially the climax where Tejas talks valiantly about the sacrifices of Indian soldiers and how they go unnoticed by the general public- almost like a discourse that the actress indulges in on social media from time to time," wrote Sen in her review.
Kangana Ranaut confirms she is working on Tanu Weds Manu 3

You may like her or hate her for her rants on social media but there is no denying the fact that Kangana Ranaut is a good performer. Give her a meaty, well-sketched-out role and she delivers. Be it Gangster, Tanu Weds Many, Queen, or Panga- Kangana delivers well to her part on screen. In her latest Tejas, Kangana sinks her teeth into playing a feisty women fighter pilot who has scores to settle with Pakistan because of personal trauma. And while the actress seems earnest in her effort to play a woman who keeps her nation first, it's a sloppily written script that fails her making Tejas very run-of-mill.

Directed and written by Sarvesh Mewara Tejas is a fictional account of a female fighter pilot who doesn't think twice before going on risky missions. She is a gifted, bright, Airforce pilot who has never been a stickler for rules. The film opens with her breaking rules to save a fellow Air Force officer from a risky tribal area. An inquiry is set up against Tejas Gill (Ranaut) and Afiya (Anshul Chauhan) for breaking the rules to save the officer but the film never shows any investigation on the matter. Instead, the film goes back in time to narrate Tejas' story - how she was named after an Air Force plane, how she bonded with her family, her falling in love with a singer Ekveer (Varun Mitra), and eventually how she lost all of them tragically.

The story then conveniently shifts gear to another covert operation where Tejas is given the charge to lead 'Operation Tejas' and rescue an Indian spy- an ex-batchmate of Tejas in NDA- who has been captured by Islamic terrorists. The group beheads prisoners in the middle of a desert in Pakistan (but obviously) every week. The whole act is filmed and sent out as a disclaimer to other countries. Tejas and Afiya (both who have broken rules and have been asked to sit out due to an investigation in a similar case previously) are given the daunting task of rescuing the spy in a span of a few hours. The operation was risky and the Indian Air Force seemed to only depend on two female officers with troubled records to carry out the covert operation.

Taking this catchphrase, Mewara creates an entire narrative in the second half, especially the climax where Tejas talks valiantly about the sacrifices of Indian soldiers and how they go unnoticed by the general public- almost like a discourse that the actress indulges in on social media from time to time.

The climax - full of jingoism and laughable VFX - tries to make it pacy and gripping with Indian and Pakistan's planes indulging in battle mid-air. The results are thrilling only in parts.

The film reportedly is a female version of the 2019 blockbuster Uri: The Surgical Strike but unlike Aditya Dhar's slick thriller, Tejas fails to create such emotions for the viewers. Even though there are lines on patriotism thrown in throughout, it fails to evoke any sense of national pride.

Uri had also worked because the film was based on a real incident and wounds were perhaps fresh for most Indians. Tejas and its patriotism seem misplaced. At a time when the world is witnessing war and crisis in various parts, most viewers would find the theme of Tejas slightly out of place or perhaps dated. Sure it has a token Muslim character to steer clear of not marginalizing a particular community but it wants us to feel hatred over the neighbour at a time when that country is in shambles. It does not give us anything new. The rivalry and hatred towards our neighbour has been passed on for generations and Tejas only reiterates facts that are well-known about Pakistan. I didn't feel any emotion for Pakistan while watching the film - even when the story was arm-twisting us to feel the hatred.

Tejas ultimately becomes yet another film to glorify Kangana and her beliefs. She is good as the straight-faced Air Force officer, but she alone cannot make the film great. Its lousy writing, shoddy VFX, and erratic plot fail to make this a thrilling film. It, though, leads to multiple eye-roll moments where the makers and the film's lead heroine arm twist you to feel emotional about India and its soldiers just like Kangana's Tejas does.

Happy birthday to the most loved leader! Bollywood extends warm wishes to PM Modi

National Film Awards 2023 to be announced today. Here are the main contenders

You rarely find Karan Johar engaging in a heart-to-heart in public on issues that are close to him. Sitting down for a chat session in Mumbai on Monday, Karan Johar opened up on his equation with Kangana Ranaut, mentioning he’s excited to watch her upcoming film Emergency, that he doesn’t like being called “Kjo”, and that Bollywood inflates box office numbers to suit itself.

Attending an event in Mumbai, Karan Johar was seen engaging in a rapid-fire session (much like he challenges actors and actresses on his show Koffee With Karan) where he spilt beans on how much he detests it when people refer to him as Kjo. He said, “It is just annoying when people call me Kjo.”

Karan Johar on why tentpoles crashed this year

When he was asked what went wrong with films like Adipurush, Laal Singh Chaddha, Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan, he said that he’s watched Aamir Khan’s Laal Singh Chaddha and remembered crying at the end of it. He didn’t know why it did not work.

Then they moved to the topic of biopics and Karan Johar was asked which non-filmy celebrity he would like to host on Koffee With Karan and he said Mahendra Singh Dhoni. Talking about biopics, Karan said that he would cast Aishwarya Rai Bachchan to play Neeta Ambani, Pankaj Tripathi for conman Sukesh Chandrashekhar’s role, Amitabh Bachchan for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s role, Ranbir Kapoor as Rahul Gandhi and Vicky Kaushal as Virat Kohli.

Karan Johar and Kangana Ranaut's equation

Karan Johar also didn’t hide his appreciation for Kangana Ranaut. When asked if he would make a film about a political event, Karan said, “Emergency is being made and I am excited to watch it.” Emergency stars Kangana Ranaut and she is all set to portray the role of former Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.

He also revealed some inside secrets of Bollywood as he accused the industry of “fudging up numbers”. He said, “We are all liars. We are all big fat liars.”

We wonder how Kangana Ranaut will react to these statements considering she always has something to say when it comes to Karan Johar and his films.
