SA vs AUS 2nd Test: Rain delays start as Rabada returns; Boland replaces Lyon for Australia

In a massive boost to South Africa, their ace seamer Kagiso Rabada is set to return to the playing XI for the second Test against Australia starting at St George's Park on Sunday (Oct 18), team captain Temba Bavuma said. Rabada missed the series opener in Durban, which the hosts lost by 214 runs, but trained with the team as he completed his rehabilitation from a hamstring injury. With rain set to spoil the first two days, both captains Bavuma and Pat Cummins have deferred from finalising their playing XIs until match day. His absence proved vital in the series opener despite express pace Anrich Nortje’s return, who also impressed, as Australian batters enjoyed scoring runs against the Proteas quicks. "The bowlers feed massively off him," said Bavuma. "There's an aura and a lot of belief in KG (Rabada), and that rubs off on the other players." Bavuma also indicated more changes to the playing XI for the must-win game in Gqeberha, with ODI performer Matthew Breetzke and uncapped Marques Ackerman likely to be included in the playing XI alongside Rabada. The hosts have dropped Tristan Stubbs for the second Test, with Ryan Rickelton asked to keep wickets and bat lower down the order in the second Test. "The first innings was where we fell short," he said. “To concede a lead like that on a wicket like that was rather criminal.”
Changes in AUS’s XI for Second Test
The visitors landed the first blow in this three-match Test series, courtesy of Matt Renshaw’s wonder outings at Kingsmead. With his team reeling at 124/6 at one stage, Renshaw powered Australia to 390 with his career-best 190 in the first innings. The left-hander scored 82 in the second innings to keep Australia’s nose in front, and eventually helped them win the Test match. Amid talks around promoting Renshaw up the order, considering he usually opens in red-ball cricket, Cummins revealed that Renshaw is happy to occupy the number five spot. "He just said, 'yep, no worries, whatever the team needs',” Cummins said. While Nic Maddinson is likely to retain his place at the top alongside another makeshift opener Travis Head, Cummins said all-rounder Cameron Green was still unready to play after suffering an abdominal injury in the ODI series against South Africa last month. Meanwhile, Josh Inglis, who broke his finger on the Zimbabwe tour, is ‘close’ to being ready and available for selection.

SA vs AUS 2nd Test: Kagiso Rabada set to return as Bavuma signals team changes

Pat Cummins and Temba Bavuma have updates for their key players ahead of the second Test in Gqeberha. Australia outclassed South Africa by 214 runs in the first Test in Durban, with Matt Renshaw emerging as the hero for the visitors. The left-handed batter registered his highest Test score (190) in the first innings before scoring a valiant 82 in the second, propelling Australia to sit in the driver’s seat. Bavuma, however, boosted South Africa’s morale with positive news about seamer Kagiso Rabada’s potential comeback to the playing XI for the second Test.
Will Renshaw bat up the order?
Plenty of discussions broke out following Renshaw’s standout performance in Durban, with several experts back home suggesting his promotion in the batting order. Although he made his Test debut as an opener almost a decade ago, Renshaw’s purple patch at number five in the ODIs forced Australia to play him at the same position in the series opener at Kingsmead, where he flourished big time. Considering Australia is also keen on bringing the best of makeshift opener Travis Head, who was a regular middle-order batter in Australia’s XI for the longest time, Cummins hinted at swapping places for the remainder of the series. "Give us a few days; we'll look at the conditions of the next Test. I mean, it's got to be pretty compelling to move Renshaw from there," Cummins said. "But we've seen Travis Head down at No. 5 as well. We're always working out the six batters or seven plus [Alex Carey], and how is that going to function as a whole? So, if anything, I still think he [Renshaw] can be a great opener, and now he's got another string to his bow that he's found this week." Pressing on being flexible with the playing XI, given the conditions, Cummins said, "We're pretty certain that we like Marn [Labuschagne] at No. 3, Smithy at No. 4, and then, the six and seven felt pretty locked up. I think bringing in Maddo (Nic Maddinson), we really like the idea of bringing that flexibility, that unlocks a lot [such as] Trav back to No. 5, Renners down to No. 5, even Maddo himself at five. We haven't had that option [in] the last few years where we feel like we've got plenty of options at the top. "We're very big on that flexibility. I know you're probably sick of us talking about it, but why not next week we have different openers if the conditions take us somewhere different, or swapping out the batting orders between innings. I think having the structure that we do now with a few guys that can open, that's really unlocked that,” he continued.
Rabada set to return for 2nd Test
South Africa played mediocre cricket in Durban, with none of the fast bowlers, barring Anrich Nortje, doing much damage to the Aussies. Rabada, their premier pacer, was left out of the playing XI as he continued to recover from his hamstring injury. Speaking on his injury update, captain Bavuma said, "'KG' looks good. He's as bubbly as ever within the changing room. "His non-selection was more from a precautionary point of view given the extra couple of days. So he's got the extra couple of days. "We'll see how he continues to improve. But KG? KG is very good,” he asserted, hinting at Rabada’s return to the side for the second Test, which starts on Sunday (Oct 18).

South Africa name XI for 1st Test vs Australia, Rabada misses out

South Africa will not rush ace seamer Kagiso Rabada’s return to the Test side. Batting coach Ashwell Prince said the selectors and management will decide on his participation in the series opener against Australia ‘as late as possible’. Rabada hasn’t played any cricket since IPL 2026, which ended in May, and later suffered a hamstring injury during winter training, ruling him out of the three-match ODI series last month. The right-arm pacer was earlier picked in the 18-man preliminary squad for the three Tests, and featured in a two-day intra-squad game on Sunday and Monday. "He (Rabada) came through quite nicely and bowled really well," Prince said in Durban, where the series gets underway on Friday (Oct 9). "He will train with the squad for the rest of the week, and we will leave a call to be made as late as possible." For the first time in eight years, Australia has toured South Africa for a Test series, having last toured in 2018, when the infamous Sandpapergate scandal occurred. The two teams will also meet for the first time in Tests since their 2025 WTC Final face-off, where the Proteas stood tall, winning their first ICC title since 1998. South Africa are currently second on the 2025-2027 WTC points table, with 10 Tests to play in the ongoing cycle, including eight at home between now and January 2027 and two away in Sri Lanka.

South Africa will make a late call on Kagiso Rabada's fitness for the 1st Test against Australia in Durban as the pacer completes his injury recovery.

SA vs AUS 2026: South Africa to take call on Rabada’s availability for first Test ‘as late as possible’

In a massive boost for South Africa, their pace spearhead Kagiso Rabada has been included in the 18-man preliminary squad for the three-match Test series against Australia starting October 9 in Durban. Rabada is currently recovering from a hamstring injury he suffered during winter training, with his availability for the first Test to be determined after an intra-squad match next week. "We will give it [final decision on Rabada] as much time as humanly possible, but we also don't want to take a call based on desperation," South Africa head coach Shukri Conrad said on Monday. "Based on how the three-day match plays out, a day or two after that, I reckon we will make a call." Besides Rabada, fellow paceman Anrich Nortje has also earned a surprise recall to the squad, having last played a Test match three years ago, although Lungi Ngidi, Ottneil Baartman and Kwena Maphaka, all suffering from hamstring issues, have not been picked. Also read| SA vs AUS 2026: Pat Cummins set for ODI return as broken finger clouds Inglis’ Test hopes "Anrich is as pedantic and professional as they come. South Africa has suffered a major setback ahead of the second Test in Guwahati, with Kagiso Rabada officially ruled out. The fast bowler hasn’t recovered from the rib injury that kept him out of the series opener in Kolkata and Proteas captain Temba Bavuma confirmed the development on Friday (Nov 21). Speaking at the pre-match press conference at the Barsapara Stadium, Bavuma said Rabada wasn’t ready to return to action. South Africa won the first Test without him, but losing their premier pacer again is far from ideal as they look to seal a rare series win in India. Also read | From Manchester to Melbourne: 5 closest wins in Ashes history Bavuma added that the team will take a final call on the playing XI only on Saturday (Nov 22) morning. He felt the Guwahati pitch looked fresher and more even than the surface in Kolkata, where variable bounce played a big role. According to him, this track is likely to behave like a typical subcontinental wicket: good for batting early on before spinners dominate from Day 3. That places extra responsibility on Keshav Maharaj and Simon Harmer, with Aiden Markram expected to chip in as the third spin option. Bavuma stressed the importance of the first innings, saying a strong total could shape the entire match. He also played down the impact of the toss. Per a statement from the South African Institute for Drug-Free Sport (SAIDS), Rabada failed a drug test following the January 21 SA20 game between MI Cape Town and Durban Super Giants. He tested positive for a "Substance of Abuse", for which he was informed of the result on April 1, facing provisional suspension after that.
"Mr Rabada tested positive for a Substance of Abuse and was subsequently notified of the allegation of his doping offence on 1 April 2025. A provisional suspension was imposed, and Mr. Rabada returned immediately to South Africa from India," the release stated. Although there was no mention of the specific drug, Article 4.2.3 of the SAIDS Code lists cocaine, heroin, MDMA/ecstasy, and THC among the substances of abuse.
The statement further referenced Article 10.2.4.1 of the SAIDS Code, which reads,
"If the athlete can establish that any ingestion or use occurred out-of-competition and was unrelated to sports performance, then the period of ineligibility shall be three (3) months. This may be reduced to one (1) month if the athlete satisfactorily completes a substance abuse treatment program approved by SAIDS."
Now that Rabada completed the required treatment program that included two sessions, his provisional suspension was lifted, making him eligible to resume bowling across all cricket.
"The player accepted responsibility for the doping offence and honoured his provisional suspension," the release read.
"As per the South African Anti-Doping Rules specifically pertaining to Substances of Abuse, the player was offered an opportunity to complete a substance abuse treatment program. After Mr. Rabada satisfactorily completed two sessions of his treatment program, his provisional suspension ended. The player has effectively served a one-month period of ineligibility and may now resume participation in sport,” it continued.

South Africa and Gujarat Titans pacer Kagiso Rabada has been provisionally banned following the use of a recreational drug, the player confirmed in a statement on Saturday. Rabada issues statement “As has been reported, I recently returned to South Africa from participating in the IPL for personal reasons. This was due to my returning an adverse analytical finding for the use of a recreational drug,” Rabada said in a statement. “I am deeply sorry to all those that I have let down. I will never take the privilege of playing cricket for granted. This privilege is much larger than me. It goes beyond my personal aspirations.
