King Khan’s latest Jawan has been setting the global box offices on fire since its release a week back. Tamil director Atlee's first Bollywood venture has not only pulled back the Hindi film industry from its deep slumber but is also setting new bars at the box office every day.

India celebrates 'Jawan': Mega star Shahr Rukh Khan's magic rules box office again

As Jawan continues to create box office records, Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan has opened up about his role in the film, the numerous get-ups he sported in the film, and the portion that has him playing an anti-hero. While speaking to IMDB about Jawan, the Indian film star gave insights into what led to his bald look in the film- a first for Khan in his long career.

*Spoilers ahead*

How Shah Rukh Khan agreed to sport a bald look

Khan was asked about his initial reactions to the bald look in the interview. Shah Rukh said he opted for the look out of mere laziness. “It was never part of the script. It was a part of the get-up that was a part of the script. I just chose the bald look out of laziness. I said, ‘Yeah, then I don’t have to wear 2 hours of this makeup, can I just go bald?' So I think it came out of that. I had reservations because I showed the promo to some friends and they were like, ‘Arey yaar! It looks very scary, girls won’t like you.'"

"So I hope girls like me. I hope girls like bald men. I like bald girls,” he joked.

In Jawan, Shah Rukh's character wears makeup to play a bald Metro hijacker and later also opts for the same look during the climax.

Khan has played iconic negative characters early in his career. The actor stated he likes playing roles with grey shades.

“I never wanted to play the hero. I find heroes very boring. I find them doing all the good things, just the nice things. To be able to do this good, I need to quickly transfer to do bad to understand that part so that I can come and do the good guy with a lot of gusto again because just playing the good guy again and again and again, being nice, puppy-eyed, doe-eyed is boring after some time. Personally, I love playing the bad guy. I love bad guys.”

Shah Rukh Khan also watches films with poor IMDB rating

He also revealed that he even watches films that have a bad rating on IMDB though he is aware that films over 7 are rated as good ones.

When asked if he had to define his legacy to a person who doesn't know him, he said that he is an actor who is trying very hard.

Meanwhile, Jawan is set to cross Rs 4 billion in India on Thursday - a week after it hit theatres.

More about Jawan

The film marks the first collaboration between Shah Rukh Khan and renowned Tamil director Atlee. Apart from Khan, the film boasts an ensemble cast including Nayanthara, playing Khan's on-screen love interest, a cop, Vijay Sethupathi, the main antagonist of the film, Sanya Malhotra, Priyamani, Girija Oak, Sanjeeta Bhattacharya, Lehar Khan, Aaliyah Qureshi, Ridhi Dogra, and Sunil Grover, as well as Deepika Padukone in a cameo appearance.s

Jawan review:

WION's Shomini Sen in her review called the film a quintessential Bollywood blockbuster.

"Pathaan reiterated SRK's liberal stance and Jawaan brings forth the feminist side of the actor. Khan has been a vocal ally for women's empowerment for years. In Jawan, sure he plays a mentor of sorts to a bunch of wronged women, but the film celebrates strong women and their might to fight it out. All the female characters are projected as strong women who can take on a goon or two on their own and yet be maternal and soft when the time arises," writes Sen in her review.
Karan Johar is 'blown away' after watching Jawan, calls SRK the 'emperor'

Shah Rukh Khan cements his position at the top with his latest film Jawan. Made by Atlee, Jawan has Khan in a double role. The vigilante drama uses the framework of South Indian actioners and presents SRK in a larger-than-life avatar.

King Khan's 'Jawan' takes over box office

Imagine going to a theatre to watch the latest blockbuster Jawan and walking out midway and having to ask for a refund. Several fans of Shah Rukh Khan in London were in for a shock when they went to a cinema hall to watch his latest release Jawan. A viral video shared by a makeup artist named Sahar Rashid shows how she and others in the cinema hall had a bad experience watching Jawan and eventually demanded a refund. The cinema hall played the second half of the vigilante thriller first by mistake.

In the video, Sahar demands a refund as her movie-going experience was ruined.

The video was posted by Sahar on her Instagram on Saturday, two days after Jawan was released in theatres. The video opens with Sahar happily showing off her tickets and the text says that she was very excited to watch the first day first show of Jawan. A montage then shows Sahar and her partner in the theatre and a few glimpses of the film on screen. Then the text says, “The cinema trolled us.”

Sahar says in the video, “Vue Cinema played the second part first. They finished the film in one hours 10 minutes and then it said interval. We thought the villain met his end so how can now be interval. Then we got to know that they never played the first part.”

The video then shows a large number of people standing near the ticket window post the screened and Sahar says they are all there for a refund.

Then the text says, “The cinema trolled us.” Sahar says in the video, “Vue Cinema played the second part first. They finished the film in one hours 10 minutes and then it said interval. We thought the villain met his end so how can now be interval. Then we got to know that they never played the first part.” The video then shows a large number of people standing near the ticket window post the screened and Sahar says they are all there for a refund.
Jawan Review

WION's Shomini Sen in her review called the film a quintessential Bollywood blockbuster.

"Pathaan reiterated SRK's liberal stance and Jawaan brings forth the feminist side of the actor. Khan has been a vocal ally for women's empowerment for years. Box Office: Shah Rukh Khan's Jawan storms into the 100 Crore Club on day 2

Shah Rukh Khan's latest film, Jawan, has brought the audience back to the theatres. The movie has already earned $18 million globally. His previously released film, Pathaan, has also been a big hit in 2023. Unlike most movie stars, Khan does not use conventional ways to promote his films anymore. He personally reaches out to his fans on social media, and interacts with them with an AskMeAnything session. Watch more details in this episode of E-Club.

Jawan release: Decoding Brand Shah Rukh Khan's social media game & more

Shah Rukh Khan, Bollywood's reigning monarch, has once again showcased why he's an enduring legend in the Indian film industry with Jawan. In 2021, his son Aryan Khan became embroiled in a high-profile legal battle stemming from his arrest during an alleged rave party on a cruise ship. He had to suffer 25 days of confinement, facing the daunting spectre of serious allegations. However, the narrative took a turn for the better in May 2022 when he was exonerated of all charges, with India's Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) admitting a flawed investigation. All this while, King Khan opted to remain silent, choosing, perhaps, to speak through his work.

It's in this context that a particular line from Jawan resonates: "Bete ko haath lagane se pahle, baap se baat kar." Heh. Clearly, he has had enough. The line was also notably highlighted in the film's trailers.

Anyhoo: Pathaan, released earlier in the year, heralded Shah Rukh Khan's triumphant return to the silver screen. The film not only garnered effusive critical acclaim but also stormed the box office, underscoring that SRK's magic remained as appealing as ever. As someone who wasn't particularly smitten with a lot of his previous work, this movie was a revelation. It wasn't just a movie; it was the triumphant return of Shah Rukh as a bona fide movie star. Sure, it was also your typical crowd-pleasing Indian masala movie but I have made my peace with those.

It is with Jawan, however, that Shah Rukh Khan truly solidifies his place as the star of the year 2023, I feel. It is bigger, shinier, and more glorious. While it may not be a cinematic masterpiece by traditional standards, it does shine a spotlight on the quintessential movie star that SRK is. As a newfound fan, I find myself eagerly celebrating his remarkable resurgence.

What is Jawan all about?

Directed by Atlee, the film features Khan in a dual role, supported by an exceptional ensemble cast including Nayanthara, Vijay Sethupathi, Priyamani, and Sanya Malhotra. Khan's first character Azad is a jailer who masterminds daring heists executed by a cadre of female inmates, all driven by a higher purpose who have had to face injustice. Azad's gang confronts the government on pressing issues that plague Indians. These are the critical problems that often go unnoticed or unaddressed like farmer suicides, the deplorable state of government hospitals, the intricate web of corruption that often exists between businessmen and politicians, and so on.

Azad's motive is simple. He wants to prove how quickly things for common people can improve when it is the establishment that feels the heat, rather than common people. Hospitals, for instance, are miraculously transformed into modern, well-equipped facilities in a matter of few hours with world-class infrastructure when sordid secrets of those in power are exposed. This is something most of us know, of course, but it's gratifying to witness it unfold in a popular movie of this nature.

Azad is eventually caught and tortured by the brother of one such unscrupulous businessman Kaalie Gaikwad (Vijay Sethupathi, reliably brilliant in this scenery-chewing role). And that is when Vikram Rathore, played by SRK again rescues him and beats his captors to death in the most stylish way possible. I leave you to uncover the nature of Azad and Vikram's relationship. Probably you already know.

Deepika Padukone, Nayanthara, and Sanya Malhotra

The film boasts of some serious women's power as well. Deepika delivers a standout performance in a role that falls somewhere between a cameo and a starring role. Deepika being Deepika, though, she makes every moment count. She and SRK are old friends (she made her Hindi film debut opposite him in Om Shanti Om) and her chemistry with him is palpable. Nayanthara's performance is marked by an innate and effortless grace. Sanya Malhotra also gets her moment to shine as a helpless doctor in a heart-wrenching scene in an ill-equipped hospital.

Action is truly spectacular

The action sequences in Jawan undoubtedly hold their own, elevated by some truly spectacular visual effects. The filmmakers have spared no expense in delivering heart-pounding, larger-than-life action moments that keep you on the edge of your seat. It's the kind of cinematic experience, of course, where you have to temporarily suspend disbelief, fully aware that the hero seems invulnerable while others meet their fate around him. But, as I mentioned earlier, I've come to terms with the phenomenon of Indian masala films.

While the action is undeniably thrilling, there is one aspect that occasionally puts me off — the copious use of slow motion. Too uncomfortably reminscent of Zack Snyder for me. It's a stylistic choice that can sometimes feel excessive and elongate sequences unnecessarily. Nevertheless, it doesn't detract significantly from the overall enjoyment of the film.

Watch Jawan if you haven't already

And there you have it. Watching Shah Rukh Khan in his element, whether he's orchestrating cinematic ballets of boundless buoyancy or delivering poignant soliloquies that resonate with the soul, is nothing short of mesmerising. He possesses that rare star power that transcends the screen.

Even after more than three decades in the industry, Shah Rukh Khan remains an indomitable presence, and his charisma retains its magnetic allure.

Netizens call Raja Kumari's Jawan title track a 'banger'

In recent years, Bollywood's biggest star Shah Rukh Khan has stopped speaking to the press directly.

Instead, he is reaching out and speaking his mind through his cinema. In the past year, Khan has made a splashing comeback - first in Pathaan and now, eight months on, in Jawan.

Pathaan came at a time when Khan had taken a sabbatical of four years after delivering a series of duds at the box office. Many claim that Khan was disappointed and reassessing his choices in scripts after films like Fan and Zero failed to create a mark.

Or maybe, Covid pandemic compelled him to take a break of sorts.

One doesn't know why or what led to Khan's long break from facing the camera. But the man ensured he made a comeback that would be remembered by many for years to come.

Khan has ruled the box office for over three decades and is perhaps one of the most known Indian entertainment industry faces in the world. Loved by generations, the man has changed the way romance is perceived in Indian cinema in this period.

While he is revered and loved, he is also loathed by certain sections of society, deeply. For the right-leaning, he is a Muslim man living and ruling the hearts of a predominantly Hindu nation- that itself can make many uncomfortable.

SRK is also one of those few actors who has never bent on any ruling party and its ideologies.

Also read: Shah Rukh Khan in Jawan: Bollywood's reigning monarch strikes gold yet again

Haters will state that he and his family have always had a leaning for the Congress party, but the man has never campaigned for the party or curried favours when it was at the Centre. Many of his contemporaries have over the years shown their allegiance to the governments at the Centre, yet SRK has steered clear of it.

The actor has had to pay a hefty price for it though.

In 2015, in an interview with journalist Barkha Dutt, SRK spoke about religious intolerance in the country, which led to a nationwide hate campaign against the actor, with many terming him as 'anti-national.'

After that interview, Khan almost withdrew into a shell, refraining from commenting on any political issue, lest that gets misconstrued and cause a backlash.

In 2021, his son Aryan was arrested in a drug case in Mumbai. Many feel it was to rattle Khan. The actor, however, maintained a stoic silence throughout. Even when Aryan's name was cleared earlier this year, Khan kept mum on the issue—no statement to the media, no comments on social media either.

Films made Khan the star that he is. And so, he has now decided to use the medium to say what he feels.

Pathaan courted controversy weeks before its release. It was scrutinised by the Censor Board after a song featuring Deepika Padukone and SRK made certain people uncomfortable. Some claimed it was vulgar, showing a Muslim man manhandling (!?) a Hindu woman, dressed in saffron colour. It may sound bizarre to most of us but the allegations prompted the state-owned Censor board to reassess the film.

But in spite of what appeared to be an orchestrated hate campaign, Pathaan opened to thunderous response and just reiterated Khan's liberal stand as an individual off camera.

In the SIddharth Anand directorial, Khan plays an intelligence officer who was named Pathaan by an Afghan family who saved him during a war.

In recent years, Bollywood's biggest star Shah Rukh Khan has stopped speaking to the press directly. Instead, he is reaching out and speaking his mind through his cinema.

Also Read | Jawan review: Shah Rukh Khan cements his position as numero uno with this vigilante thriller Khan has ruled the box office for over three decades and is perhaps one of the most known Indian entertainment industry faces in the world. Also read: Shah Rukh Khan in Jawan: Bollywood's reigning monarch strikes gold yet again Haters will state that he and his family have always had a leaning for the Congress party, but the man has never campaigned for the party or curried favours when it was at the Centre. Many of his contemporaries have over the years shown their allegiance to the governments at the Centre, yet SRK has steered clear of it. The actor has had to pay a hefty price for it though. In 2015, in an interview with journalist Barkha Dutt, SRK spoke about religious intolerance in the country, which led to a nationwide hate campaign against the actor, with many terming him as 'anti-national.' After that interview, Khan almost withdrew into a shell, refraining from commenting on any political issue, lest that gets misconstrued and cause a backlash. He is an orphan in the film. It has Deepika Padukone playing a Pakistani intelligence agent who joins hands with Pathaan to fight the evil: an Indian ex-army officer played by John Abraham, who went rogue and now poses a threat to world peace and order. The actor, who is married to Gauri Khan, a Hindu, has time and again spoken about his religious tolerance and how his children practice both his and his wife's religion at home. In Pathaan, Khan seemed to play an extension of his persona who fights for India but never really bashes the neighbour or for that matter any religion. If Pathaan talked about his liberal stand, Jawan talks about Khan the feminist, who has been a vocal ally of women's empowerment. His NGO has for years financially helped acid-attack victims, the opening credits of his films feature the leading lady's name before his and he has often talked on public platforms about the role women- his mother, sister, wife and daughter- have played in his life. In Jawan- a vigilante drama- SRK takes on the system with a bunch of female convicts who have been wronged in society and landed behind bars on false charges. SRK and 'his girls' are portrayed as larger than life, taking on goons double their size. Jawan also subtly delivers a message or two to the government and the fallacies in the system. The methods may not be conventional, but SRK's Azaad Rathore gives solutions on problems like farmer's suicide due to debt, the lack of facilities in state-run hospitals and the importance of voting for the right party (ahem!). The film even takes a sly dig (or does it) on the Aryan Khan case, with the older SRK telling the villain to first talk to the father before laying his hand on the son: "Bete ko haath lagane se phele baap se baat kar". We get it, Shah Rukh, we do and we applaud you for doing it this way. Jawan has already created history with its opening numbers on Thursday. Amid protests of boycott, Khan has once again cemented his position at the top. In the 1990s and early 2000s, Khan delivered mostly romantic films, thereby earning the title of King of Romance. In the present decade, as he nears 60, Khan is making his politics clear to one and all. Jawan is out, and like it or not, Shah Rukh Khan's politics is here to stay

Jawan Day is here! Shah Rukh Khan's latest film Jawan released worldwide amid a lot of celebrations. Even as several cinema halls across cities screened the film in the early hours of the day, Jawan also fell prey to piracy. Just a few hours after the film was released in theatres, it leaked online.

According to reports, the pirated version of the film is now available on Telegram and Torrent websites.

Fans react to Jawan's leak online

Several fans of Shah Rukh Khan expressed disappointment over the news of the leak. Some were worried that the leak would impact its box office performance. A fan tweeted, "Shah Rukh Khan, it's too bad. Someone leaked your new movie Jawan today. I think it's too bad for collection and record, so please do something. Jawan movie available on the internet."

One person tagged the Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting Anurag Thakur and Shah Rukh Khan on Twitter (X), and wrote, "Which law have you made? Right now no one is following that law. Jawan has been released today, and after some time it has been leaked online. The film industry suffers huge losses due to movies being leaked online."

Jawan box office prediction

The rousing advance booking for Jawan has made everyone hopeful. Trade pundits are expecting Jawan to earn Rs 700 million on the first day itself. SRK's last release, Pathaan, is now the highest-grossing film of 2023. Jawan may just upstage Pathaan's record at the box office.

The film has also typically courted controversy before its release. A day before its theatrical release, the film trended on X, formerly known as Twitter, with the hashtag #BoycottJawan mainly due to the involvement of Udhayanidhi Stalin. Stalin is a renowned film producer and Tamil Nadu state minister. He is backing the film in Tamil Nadu and is reportedly one of the main distributors of the film in the region.

Giving him company in this thrilling ride are a bunch of women. Nayanthara, Sanya Malhotra, Priyamani and Deepika Padukone play key roles in the film. The film also has Vijay Sethupathi as an antagonist. Watch Critically Speaking to find out why Shah Rukh Khan's Jawan works.

Shah Rukh Khan's Jawan releases, celebrations begin as early as 5 am across cities in India

Shah Rukh Khan's film Jawan is just hours from its big theatrical release. The film has been creating a lot of buzz for the past month - ever since the first teaser of the film came out. With just a day left for the film to hit theatres, the film has courted controversy. Even though the film is witnessing record-breaking advance bookings, the film trended on X, formerly known as Twitter, with the hashtag #BoycottJawan.

What led to the trend #BoycottJawan?

Jawan, directed by Atlee, stars Shah Rukh Khan along with Nayanthara and Vijay Sethupathi in lead roles. The film has been made in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu. Certain sections on social media have been demanding a boycott of the film, a day before its theatrical release, mainly due to the involvement of Udhayanidhi Stalin. Stalin is a renowned film producer and Tamil Nadu state minister. He is backing the film in Tamil Nadu and is reportedly one of the main distributors of the film in the region.

A few days back, the minister sparked outrage with a controversial statement comparing Sanatan Dharma to mosquitoes and dengue. This comment led to a significant backlash, and the producer-politician stated that he was not afraid of any legal action.

Not just Udhayanidhi Stalin's involvement with the film, but many have raised objections to Shah Rukh Khan's recent visit to Hindu temples ahead of the Jawan release.
Why is #BoycottJawan trending on social media a day before Jawan's release?

Bollywood's biggest superstar Shah Rukh Khan is back in theatres for the second time this year in Atlee's Jawan. The film has created a lot of buzz in the country as it comes after the super successful Pathaan earlier this year. The film marked SRK's comeback on screen after four long years and proved to be a blockbuster and created box office history. Naturally, expectations are very high for Jawan- SRK's second screen outing this year. The film has been produced by his production house Red Chillies Entertainment and hits the big screen on Thursday.

The pan-India thriller also stars Vijay Sethupathi and Nayanthara in key roles.

Jawan's record-breaking advance booking

Jawan is the first Hindi film to have early morning shows on the day of its release. There are 5 am shows in Kolkata, a 6 am show in Jaipur and tickets are flying off the proverbial shelf. Jawan is expected to break the opening day figures of his own film Pathaan, with insiders pegging day one earnings at Rs 700 million.

While the country gears up to watch their favourite star on the big screen in a larger-than-life character, the release clashes with the G20 Summit that is scheduled to take place on September 9-10 in India's capital, New Delhi.

Will G20 summit affect Jawan screenings in Delhi?

In Delhi, the film releases ahead of the G20 Summit on September 9-10. The summit will host several heads of state, including US President Joe Biden. While the city will remain open during the weekend, restrictions will be imposed only in some parts of the city- the NDMC area.

Sanjeev Bijli, PVR-INOX Ltd's Executive Director, spoke to PTI and said he is not worried about the theatrical business taking a hit in central Delhi because of G20 restrictions. It would mean four PVR theatres -- PVR Plaza, Rivoli, Odeon and ECX Chanakyapuri -- shut during the summit.

"They are single-screen theatres with a total capacity of about 2,000 seats so that really wouldn't have much of an impact because the loss for that will be compensated by the fact that Delhi has a four-day weekend," he said.

Record breaking first-day earnings anticipated

"People are saying that this will be an opening day of Rs 700 million, which is bigger than Pathaan. The opening day figure for Pathaan was Rs 500 million. So hopefully it will be bigger than Pathaan,” he further said.

Online ticket booking platform BookMyShow said Jawan is off to a great start with 750,000 tickets already being booked.

Pathaan was a blockbuster, with reported earnings of over 10 billion rupees. Jawan, described by makers as a high-octane thriller outlining "the emotional journey of a man who is set to rectify the wrongs in the society", could outdo that.

The film, releasing in Hindi, Tamil and Telugu, premieres at a time Bollywood theatrical releases -- most recent being Gadar 2 and OMG 2 -- are raking it in.

Mumbai-based trade expert Komal Nahta agreed with Biji’s estimate. "The situation is crazy across single-screen theatres and multiplexes both. It is difficult to predict the business. It will at least do Rs 700 million on day one (in India)," Nahta told PTI.

Jawan trailer release:

The trailer for the film was released last week, and it was packed with action, drama, romance, thriller, and comedy. The trailer gave us a glimpse of Shah Rukh Khan's Jawan, who is donning multiple avatars: in one frame, he's a hijacker, then he's a former soldier, and then he's a policeman. Apart from Khan, the trailer also gave us a glimpse of Nayanthara, who is playing the role of a cop, and Vijay Sethupathi, the main antagonist of the film,
who is playing the role of the world’s 4th largest weapons dealer. We also got a glimpse of Khan and Nayanthara's romance.

The film is helmed by Atlee and boasts an ensemble cast including Sanya Malhotra, Priyamani, Girija Oak, Sanjeeta Bhattacharya, Lehar Khan, Aaliyah Qureshi, Ridhi Dogra, and Sunil Grover. We also got a glimpse of Deepika Padukone, who will be playing a cameo role.

Box office anticipation

There has been enough buzz around the film, with many saying that it will open with a huge box office collection. According to several reports, the film is set to garner $ 1 billion on its opening day. The advance booking of the film has already started, and it has already collected whopping numbers in advance bookings in the US.

On Wednesday, trade analyst Manobala Vijayabalan posted on X (formerly known as Twitter) that Jawan’s advance bookings in the United States have crossed $150,000 (over Rs 1.25 crore). Jawan is a Red Chillies Entertainment presentation directed by Atlee, produced by Gauri Khan, and co-produced by Gaurav Verma. Jawan audio launch: Fans go crazy as Shah Rukh Khan, Vijay Sethupathi take centrestage

Shah Rukh Khan has pulled out all his cards for this one as the makers released the Jawan trailer days before the film’s theatrical release. Directed by Atlee and slated for a September 7 release, Jawan promises to be a family entertainer with everything – action, drama, romance, thriller, comedy, and anything else that you can think of. The Jawan trailer was released today as fans got a hold of what the film is about – an army personnel's father, an anti-hero (Vijay Sethupathi) who is the world’s 4th largest weapons dealer, some kickass romance with Nayanthara and all of this interspersed with a train hijack that cops are trying to get a breakthrough in.

In the same sequence, when asked what he wants in return for those kept hostage, he is heard saying, "Alia Bhatt".
