'Trying to fix something that is not broken' - India's T20 WC winner on Rohit & Co.'s Asia Cup struggles

India lost to Sri Lanka in a must-win Super Four clash at the Asia Cup 2022 edition on Tuesday (September 06), at the iconic Dubai International Cricket Stadium, Dubai. After losing to Pakistan in their opening clash in the Super Four round, Rohit Sharma & Co. were expected to bounce back over the eighth-ranked Lankans, however, Dasun Shanaka & Co. beat them by six wickets in a pulsating 174-run chase.

Opting to bowl first, Sri Lanka rode on early strikes from Dilshan Madushanka and Maheesh Theekshana before Shanaka and Chamika Karunaratne dented the run-flow in the end overs. Rohit's 41-ball 72 and some contributions from Suryakumar Yadav (34), Rishabh Pant-Hardik Pandya (17 runs a piece) and R Ashwin's 7-ball 15 not out took India to 173/8.

In reply, Kusal Mendis-Pathum Nissanka's half-centuries and Shanaka-Bhanuka Rajapaksha's finishing cameos took SL past the finish line in another last-over thriller in Dubai. With back-to-back defeats, after dominating the group stage, India have one foot on the flight back home. They, however, have a slim chance of making it to the final. Nonetheless, the Men in Blue need a lot of things to fall in their favour.

EXPLAINED! After losing to Pakistan & Sri Lanka, how India can still qualify for Asia Cup 2022 final

Rohit Sharma-led India faced Hong Kong in their Asia Cup 2022 match on Wednesday (August 31) at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium, Dubai. After a thrilling win over Pakistan, the Men in Blue were looking to cement their spot in the Super Four round with another victory in their kitty. The Rohit Sharma-Rahul Dravid-led Indian team went past the minnows by 40 runs to become the second team, after Afghanistan, to enter the next round in the Asian championship, being held in the UAE.

Being asked to bat first, India rode on Virat Kohli's gritty 59 not out and Suryakumar Yadav's 26-ball 68* to post 192/2 in 20 overs. In reply, Hong Kong lost only five wickets but only managed 152-5 to lose by a convincing margin. With this win, Team India achieved a new feat by registering their 18th win in the format in 2022, most by the one-time winners in a calendar year. Pakistan had attained 17 wins in 2017 and, thus, India have gone past them but the overall list is still led by Babar Azam & Co. In 2021, the Men in Green had bagged 20 wins in the format (most by any team in a calendar year). However, with plenty of T20I action remaining in the year -- with the 2022 T20 World Cup to be held in Australia from October-November -- Rohit & Co. will hope to go past their arch-rivals and top the overall list.

After the win versus Hong Kong, Rohit opined at the post-match presentation, "We batted pretty well to start with, got to a very good score. Came out and bowled reasonably well, we could have done slightly better with the ball. (SKY) The kind of innings he played today, the words will be short. We have seen that with him every now and then. He comes up with such kinds of knocks. He just comes out and bats fearlessly which is what the team expects from him. Some of the shots he played today, those are not written anywhere in the book. It was very pleasing to watch. Shot selection was also crucial. We know he can play all around the park. We have also informed the group about this (flexibility in the batting order) as well. Most of the guys are ready to take the opportunity and be ready to bat wherever required. That's the flexibility we need. We'll take those chances. We are going to try and use the right match-ups."

Rohit Sharma's India register most T20I wins in a calendar year after going past Hong Kong in Asia Cup 2022

KL Rahul had a forgettable outing for Team India in their second game in the Asia Cup 2022 edition, where they locked horns with Hong Kong at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium, Dubai. On Wednesday evening (August 31), Rohit Sharma-led India locked horns with the minnows and rode on Suryakumar Yadav's 26-ball 68 not out and Virat Kohli's 59* to post 192-2 before restricting Hong Kong for 152-5 to win by 40 runs. While it was a fine outing for the Men in Blue, vice-captain Rahul was heavily criticised for his abysmal 39-ball 36.

Rahul, returning to international cricket during the Zimbabwe series last month, struggled to open his account and was dismissed for a golden duck versus Pakistan in defending champions India's Asia Cup opener. Versus Hong Kong, he opened with captain Rohit and fell on the last ball of the 13th over, after stitching a handy 54-run stand with Virat Kohli, before his dismissal. The right-hander hit only two fours in his innings. Thus, many slammed Rahul on social media and some former cricketers also had few words to say about his struggles.

Former Indian opener-turned-commentator Sunil Gavaskar came to Rahul's support after the Hong Kong tie. Speaking to India Today, he said, "I think KL Rahul is a class act. With the kind of performance he has had over the years for India... if you give others a long rope, why can't we give KL Rahul a long rope? He is your vice-captain as well. You give him a long rope because we have all seen what he is capable of in the T20 format."

"He is coming back from an injury, so that rhythm is not quite there but the rhythm will come and when it comes, it will be devastating for the opposition," he added.

"He is just one knock away from finding his form. The shots that he played, he timed them well. He was not struggling for timing. I felt he was timing them well. So I think he's just there and it's a matter of time," he further asserted.

Ravindra Jadeja played his part in India's thrilling win over Pakistan in the Asia Cup 2022 clash on August 28 (Sunday) at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium, Dubai. The star all-rounder returned with bowling figures of 2-0-11-0 and scored a crucial 29-ball 35 after being promoted at No. 4 in the Men in Blue's run-chase of 148 versus their arch-rivals.

In India's second game of the showpiece event, Jadeja didn't get a chance to bat as Rohit Sharma & Co. posted a mammoth 192/2 in 20 overs versus Hong Kong, after being asked to bat first at the same venue. However, the 33-year-old returned with an economical spell of 4-0-15-1 and inflicted a run-out as well. He dismissed Hong Kong captain Nizakhat Khan, on a free hit delivery, to derail the minnows' run-chase on Wednesday (August 31). The run-out took place on the last ball of the powerplay, with Hong Kong 51 for 1. On a back of a length delivery, Nizakhat pushed the ball towards the backward point where Jadeja was placed. Trying to steal a single, the Hong Kong skipper paid a heavy price by taking on one of the best fielders as Jadeja's rocket throw sent him back to the pavillion. Here's the video of the run-out:

During the 2019 ODI World Cup, former cricketer-turned-commentator Manjrekar had made heads turn when he claimed all-rounder Jadeja is a 'bits and pieces' cricketer. Manjrekar's comments weren't well received by the star Indian all-rounder back then and he made it known courtesy of his animated celebration towards the commentary box after reaching a fine half-century in the mega event's semi-final clash between India and New Zealand at Old Trafford, Manchester.

IND vs PAK: 'You are ok to talk to me?': Manjrekar leaves Jadeja in splits, all-rounder replies - WATCH

It was a proper India-Pakistan clash when both sides faced each other in the Asia Cup 2022 edition, on Sunday (August 28), at the iconic Dubai International Cricket Stadium, Dubai. Facing each other for the first time since the 2021 T20 World Cup, held at the same ground, Rohit Sharma-led India were eyeing to settle scores versus Babar Azam's Pakistan following their ten-wicket loss versus the arch-rivals in last year's face-off at the mega event. The match went down to the wire before Hardik Pandya's all-round skills bailed India out and guided them to a five-wicket win.

After delivering with the ball, returning with 3 for 25 after Bhuvneshwar Kumar's 4-fer restricted Pakistan to 147 all-out in 19.5 overs following India's decision to bowl first, Hardik came out to bat in the run-chase with India reduced to 89-4 in 14.2 overs. He looked calm and composed as ever and stitched an important 52-run fifth-wicket stand with Ravindra Jadeja (35 off 29 balls) before guiding the team to a thrilling five-wicket win with seven required off the last over. Hardik ended the proceedings with a fine six off Mohammad Nawaz, Pakistan's best bowler in the evening, to end with a fine 17-ball 33 not out.

After the match, Hardik gave a sneak peak of his mindset and said at the post-match presentation, "We only needed 7 off the last over, but even if we needed 15, I’d have fancied myself. I know the bowler is under more pressure than I am in the 20th over. I try to keep things simple. In a chase like this, you always plan over-by-over. I always knew that there was one young bowler and also one left-arm spinner."

'Even if we needed 15, I'd have fancied myself': Hardik Pandya after India edge past Pakistan in Asia Cup

Virat Kohli is gearing up for his international comeback ahead of the Asia Cup 2022 edition, which gets underway on August 27. Ahead of Rohit Sharma-led India's tournament-opener versus Pakistan, in Dubai, on Sunday (August 28), Kohli shared a heartfelt post for MS Dhoni which has now gone viral. The strong bond between Dhoni and Kohli is known to the cricketing fraternity and the 33-year-old won hearts with his post recalling his time playing under the former Indian captain.

In early 2012, Kohli was appointed the then Indian captain Dhoni's deputy ahead of the Asia Cup in Bangladesh. The right-hander came to his own following the 2011 ODI World Cup and his consistency got rewarded as he was named the vice-captain amid the presence of senior players such as Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir, Yuvraj Singh, etc. Kohli held the post till the end of Dhoni's white-ball captaincy tenure whereas he succeeded him in Tests in 2015. Thus, the superstar cricketer shared a heartfelt post for Dhoni, recalling the time when he served as the Jharkhand-born cricketer's deputy and further stated that he will always cherish the several match-winning partnerships he shared with the former keeper-batter.

On late Thursday evening, Kohli tweeted, "Being this man’s trusted deputy was the most enjoyable and exciting period in my career. Our partnerships would always be special to me forever. 7+18."

Cheteshwar Pujara has been an integral part of India's Test line-up ever since he made his debut. While Pujara was initially labelled as a home bully, he has played some memorable knocks in tough overseas conditions for Team India.

Pujara's Southampton ton during the 2018 England tour, 521-run tally in the 2018/19 Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia, 153 in Johannesburg Test in 2013 and many more such knocks have made him an indispensable part of the red-ball squad. Though he was dropped for the Sri Lanka home series early this year, his zeal to bounce back saw him return for the one-off Test versus England in July, in Edgbaston, Birmingham, after a splendid County Championship for Sussex. While he has scored over 600 runs in the ongoing Royal London One-Day Cup for Sussex, Pujara took some time out to have a Q/A session with his fans on Twitter on Wednesday (August 24).

Just a few days are left for the India-Pakistan clash in the forthcoming Asia Cup 2022 edition. The tournament will kick off on August 27 in the UAE with Afghanistan taking on Sri Lanka but the most-awaited clash is when the two Asian giants India and Pakistan lock horns a day later at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium.

Ahead of the India-Pakistan face-off, the first since the 2021 T20 World Cup, Indian captain Rohit Sharma played down the hype on the contest.

Speaking to the tournament's broadcaster Star Sports, Sharma said, "Everyone watches the game and it's a high-pressure game without a doubt, but within the group we want to create a normal atmosphere."

"We don't want to hype this game too much. It's important to tell the players who haven't played against Pakistan or played them just one or two times that it's just another opposition," he told Star Sports.

Speaking to the tournament's broadcaster Star Sports, Sharma said, "Everyone watches the game and it's a high-pressure game without a doubt, but within the group we want to create a normal atmosphere." "We don't want to hype this game too much. It's important to tell the players who haven't played against Pakistan or played them just one or two times that it's just another opposition," he told Star Sports. 'It's just another opposition' - Rohit Sharma downplays hype around India-Pakistan face-off in Asia Cup

The stage is set for the forthcoming Asia Cup 2022 edition, set to get underway in the UAE on August 27. Former New Zealand all-rounder Scott Styris feels Rohit Sharma-led India -- the defending champions and seven-time winners -- have the ability to squash everybody, including Pakistan.

Speaking on SPORTS18’s daily sports news show ‘SPORTS OVER THE TOP’, Styris pointed out, "Well, as we know, India has a very strong T20 league as well. I think it's the ability to come together and play the style and brand of cricket that best suits your players. I thought that was the big trick that India missed at the last T20 World Cup as it took them about two games. The two losses they had before they just started to go after the opposition, impose themselves with the talent and skill that they've got. I want to see India do that in this Asia Cup. I want them to impose themselves on the other teams and l they've got the ability to do that, I think they've got the ability to squash everybody, including Pakistan, in this Asia Cup."

Virat Kohli's form continues to be a topic of discussion in the cricketing fraternity. The 33-year-old has been out of form for quite some time and hasn't been part of the action at the international level since India's tour of England, where he returned without a single half-century across formats. Thus, all eyes are on the former Indian skipper on how he returns to his best in the forthcoming Asia Cup 2022 edition, to be held in the UAE.

Ahead of the Asia Cup, which will be held in the shortest format as a dress rehearsal for the 2022 T20 World Cup, former Pakistan speedster Wasim Akram has come out in support of under-fire Kohli. He labelled him as one of the greatest of all time and has backed him to overcome his rut in the upcoming Asian championship.

"Let me start off with from last year or so, whatever I have been seeing on social media, from Indian fans, against Virat Kohli... most of them, fans or press, or whoever they may be, having a go at him unnecessarily. He is only 33, he is one of the greatest of all time," Akram said during a press conference organised by Star Sports.

"He is extraordinary. He is averaging 50-plus in all formats, he is still fit as a fiddle, he is still one of the best fielders in the Indian squad and like they say, form is temporary, class is forever. That is Virat Kohli. I am sure he will come back and score runs. I hope he doesn't come back against Pakistan, but he will make a comeback," Akram added.

Virat Kohli one of the greatest of all time, they are having a go at him unnecessarily: Wasim Akram

A lot of former and active cricketers continue to opine on Virat Kohli. Kohli remains the topic of discussion despite last playing an international game on July 17. After India's tour of England, the 33-year-old star Indian batter had been given rest for the national side's white-ball tour of West Indies and will now return in the upcoming Asia Cup 2022 edition, in the UAE, from August 27-September 11.

Talking about Kohli's form, the right-hander's last international century came in the pre-Covid era. He had a forgettable 2020 tour of New Zealand before the Covid-19 pandemic struck and shocked the whole world. Following that, he scored a lot of half-centuries but a century continues to evade him. Even in India's 2022 tour of England, Kohli ended without a single half-century across formats whereas he had an ordinary run in IPL 2022, for the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB).

Many expect Kohli to start afresh in the forthcoming Asia Cup and regain his form before the 2022 T20 World Cup, in Australia, in October-November. Before the tournament, his good friend and former RCB teammate AB de Villiers lavished praise on him. "Virat [Kohli] is one of the greatest cricketers ever to play the game. Form is temporary, class is permanent. Virat remains world-class. Virat and I remain in regular contact. We are friends, and he certainly does not need me to tell him the importance of working hard during a bad patch," said De Villers in interaction with NDTV.

Ravi Shastri's coaching tenure for Team India was quite a memorable one. While he didn't take India to an ICC title, the then Virat Kohli-led national side achieved sizeable success under him. Under Shastri, India reached the 2019 ODI World Cup semi-final, inaugural WTC final, dominated at home, beat Australia twice in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy Down Under, drew a five-match Test series versus hosts England and won bilateral T20I series in SENA countries.

He would not be very appreciative of that. Shastri knew exactly what he wanted from the team, the way in which it was played, but his tolerance was very little for failures. He always used to push people to do very well," said Karthik on Cricbuzz' docuseries Summer Stalemate

India tour of Zimbabwe: Shikhar Dhawan reacts to being replaced by KL Rahul as captain

BCCI announced a change in captaincy for Team India ahead of their departure for the tour of Zimbabwe when they added KL Rahul in the squad. With the return of the regular vice-captain, Rahul was named the Indian captain, replacing Shikhar Dhawan who was already announced as the leader-in-charge for the short tour of the West Indies.

This change in captaincy hasn't been received well by many former Indian cricketers, such as Saba Karim, Aakash Chopra, etc. Now, former middle-order batter Mohammad Kaif also reacted to the change in captaincy and remains unimpressed.

Speaking in a media interaction with Sony Sports, Kaif said, "The captaincy episode could have been avoided. May be KL Rahul's medical report came in late, and it could be a case of miscommunication as well. If India would have played this series under Dhawan, as initially announced, I don't think it would have bothered KL Rahul.

"But I totally agree, if someone has been announced as captain, he should remain as captain. Dhawan is an easy-going personality, but it isn't right on a player," he added.

Rohit Sharma was promoted as India's full-time captain after Virat Kohli relinquished captaincy duties altogether by resigning as the red-ball captain early this year. Hitman, as Rohit is fondly called worldwide, has come a long way ever since his international debut in 2007. After his debut, he struggled for consistency -- despite showcasing his skills and talent in his early days -- before his fortunes changing after becoming a limited-overs opener since the 2013 Champions Trophy. Later in the same year, Rohit made his Test debut and scored two tons in his first-ever red-ball game but never managed to settle in the Test line-up in the following years.

Rohit's stature continued to grow in white-ball formats, where he came to his own since early 2016, he didn't play a single Test between October 2016 and November 2017. Moreover, his next Test century -- after his debut match -- also came in late 2017. While he was part of the South Africa Tests, in the African nation, in early 2018 and was among runs in the limited-overs series versus hosts England -- during Virat Kohli & Co.'s trip to the United Kingdom after a few months -- he was dropped for the five Tests versus Joe Root-led England. Thus, veteran keeper-batter Dinesh Karthik recently revealed that the 2018 Test omission hit Rohit really hard.

"He had almost gone down the path where he was so successful as a white-ball cricketer. He was happy doing that. And when he did come back into the Test team, you've got to remember in 2018, he was dropped from the Test team. He was sent back after the white-ball leg and that really hurt him. Rohit Sharma did not see that coming and that really tore him to shreds," Karthik said in the docu-series Summer Stalemate on Cricbuzz.

In the Rohit Sharma-Rahul Dravid era, India are shaping up really well ahead of the 2022 T20 World Cup, from October-November in Australia. The T20I line-up is playing with a lot of freedom and aggression whereas the ODI team has also done well. The Test squad, however, has lost some golden opportunities of winning a series in South Africa and England as they continue to rebuild post the staggering success achieved in the Virat Kohli-era.

Nonetheless, India have not looked out of sorts in any format post Kohli's captaincy tenure. One of the most-talked-about-aspects in the Rohit-Rahul era is that India have made multiple captaincy changes in 2022, with as many as seven players leading the side across formats. Thus, a lot has been said and written on India's multiple captaincy changes in the ongoing calendar year. This has primarily been done to give rest to senior players, along with regular captain Rohit, which has resulted in various future captaincy contenders auditioning for the top post whereas it has also led to the national team having a huge pool of players.

Recently, BCCI chief Sourav Ganguly also opined on India's multiple captaincy changes in 2022 and explained how it has been beneficial. "Rohit Sharma is now the all-format captain. And they play so much, injuries are bound to happen and hence they do need injury-breaks. This gives the advantage that there are a lot of new players who have come up. And we won in West Indies and in England with these new bunch of players. India now have a pool of 30 players who can now play for the national team anytime,” Ganguly told India Today.

Sourav Ganguly opines on Team India's multiple captaincy changes in 2022, explains how it has been beneficial

Team India have seen as many as seven players captain the side across formats in 2022. Ever since Virat Kohli relinquished captaincy altogether, being sacked as an ODI skipper and quitting from the role in the other two formats, Rohit Sharma has done well as India's full-time captain but hasn't led a lot in Tests and ODIs (due to rest, Covid or injury concerns).

KL Rahul led India during the South Africa tour, Rishabh Pant led amid the former's injury during a second-stringed Indian team's home T20Is versus the Proteas, Hardik Pandya joined the leadership group and led during the Ireland T20Is in Dublin (also leading in a T20I during the recent West Indies series). In addition, Jasprit Bumrah led in the one-off Test versus England whereas Shikhar Dhawan was in-charge during the Windies ODIs, in the Caribbean island. In between, Kohli had also led in two Tests in SA before giving up the red-ball captaincy. At 35, Rohit is certainly not going to have a long run as a full-time captain. With so many being auditioned in the leadership role, former cricketers and experts continue to predict who will succeed Rohit as full-time captain or captaining in Tests or limited-overs.

In this regard, former Indian opener-turned-commentator Aakash Chopra feels Rishabh Pant might just pip KL Rahul -- who is touted to be the next all-format captain -- to become the Test skipper post Rohit's tenure. "There are three other captains. I will talk about KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant and Shreyas Iyer, I can talk about Sanju Samson as well. Rishabh Pant may just actually pip Rahul to the post in Test cricket but don't forget Rahul is a class player across the three formats. But you have not understood the clear DNA of their captaincy," Chopra said in a video on his YouTube channel.

While Chopra named Pant as the one to succeed Rohit, he questioned some of his decision-making as India's stand-in captain or while leading the Delhi Capitals (DC) in the IPL. He stated, "Rishabh Pant, for example, seems to be an aggressive captain in terms of the way he uses the bowlers. But at times an over is left in the end, like Kuldeep picked up four wickets but didn't bowl his four overs. I mean that also has happened very often, or a spinner is bowling the 20th over. So it is a developing story."

Who should succeed Rohit Sharma as India's Test captain? Former Indian opener shares his choice

Team India is shaping up really well, under Rohit Sharma, for the upcoming 2022 T20 World Cup, to be held in Australia from October-November. Since last year's edition, in the UAE, India have changed their approach with the bat -- with the top-order being more aggressive in their approach -- whereas they have also been blessed with a good balance in the lower-half, especially with the return of Hardik Pandya.

Hardik, who led Gujarat Titans (GT) to IPL 2022 championship, has been firing on all cylinders ever since he made his comeback into the Indian team. He has bowled at regular intervals, accounted for key wickets, brought a sense of calm with the bat and has won games for India with his all-round blitz. Moreover, he is now also being seen as a future captain and has led with aplomb in the limited opportunities so far.

In an interaction with the Times of India, former South Africa all-rounder Lance Klusener lavished huge praise on Pandya and feels Team India is a different outfit in his presence. "A fast-bowling all-rounder like Hardik Pandya adds glue to any white-ball side or to any cricket team. It's so good to have him back and is getting into the form we are accustomed to. The Indian team looks a different side when Hardik Pandya is in full flow."

Klusner, who is currently Zimbabwe's batting coach, also feels a lowly-ranked African team will learn a lot while playing against a second-stringed Indian line-up. The Men in Blue's tour of Zimbabwe kicks off on August 18.

Former Indian opener-turned-commentator Aakash Chopra recently compared the captaincy styles of Virat Kohli and current Team India skipper Rohit Sharma.
On August 15 2020, MS Dhoni announced his retirement from international cricket. On the evening of the historic day for the nation, with the countrymen busy in Independence day celebrations, one of India's greatest cricketers Dhoni decided to step aside from int'l cricket after a year-long sabbatical since the 2019 ODI World Cup semi-final.

After Dhoni's 72-ball 50 couldn't take India to the 2019 ODI WC final, losing to eventual runners-up New Zealand by 18 runs, the former Indian captain made himself unavailable at the highest level and was on a sabbatical until he finally announced his retirement two years back on August 15. Dhoni, who is often known for his unorthodox style, shared an emotional Instagram post to announce the big decision.

He captioned it, "Thanks. Thanks a lot for ur love and support throughout.from 1929 hrs consider me as Retired."

Dhoni's retirement decision shocked many and sent his plethora of fans into a meltdown, even though many had anticipated this following India's 2019 ODI World Cup exit. His announcement came right before IPL 2020 season when he had already joined the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) camp, in the UAE. Soon after his announcement, India's all-rounder Suresh Raina also joined him by calling it quits from int'l cricket.

Raina wrote on Instagram, "It was nothing but lovely playing with you, @mahi7781 . With my heart full of pride, I choose to join you in this journey. Thank you India. Jai Hind"

Thanks a lot for ur love and support throughout.from 1929 hrs consider me as Retired." Soon after his announcement, India's all-rounder Suresh Raina also joined him by calling it quits from int'l cricket.
Rishabh Pant was India's first-choice wicketkeeper-batter across formats before IPL 2022. While he remains a vital cog in all formats for Team India, Dinesh Karthik's stellar run in IPL 15 has seen the veteran giving a tough competition to Pant for the keeper's slot for this year's T20 World Cup.

With the 2022 T20 WC set to be held in Australia from October-November, Rohit Sharma-led Indian team management is still trying out quite a few players and rotating them in various roles before finalising their squad. Thus, Pant recently opened up on his tough competition with DK, who returned to the Indian team after nearly a three-year hiatus post the 2019 ODI World Cup.

Speaking to Zee Hindustan, the 24-year-old Pant said, “We don't think on those lines. We as individuals always want to give our 100 per cent to the team. Rest depends on the coach and the captain and how the team could get an advantage from that.”

Ever since DK has returned to the Indian T20I line-up, the 37-year-old has played some vital knocks as a finisher and returned as the Player-of-the-Match on two occasions. He also registered his first-ever half-century in the format during the home series versus South Africa, after IPL 2022, during Pant's captaincy.

Pant, on the other hand, strikes only at a moderate 126.5 in the shortest format -- when compared to DK's 140.04 -- but remains in the scheme of things for India ahead of this year's T20 World Cup in Australia. The forthcoming Asia Cup and few home series -- versus SA and Australia -- will give a much clear picture as to who among the duo will have a stronger chance of making it to the playing XI (if the team is keen to field only one of them).

India and Pakistan are set to lock horns with each other in the forthcoming Asia Cup 2022 edition, to be held in the UAE from August 27-September 11. There are high chances of the two Asian giants meeting each other thrice in the upcoming tournament -- which will be played in the shortest format -- whereas the two teams are also placed in the same group (Pool B) for the 2022 T20 World Cup, from October-November in Australia.

Thus, cricket fans are set to enjoy plenty of India-Pakistan matches in the rest of the year. Ahead of the India-Pakistan clash on August 28, which will be the Asia Cup opener for both sides, former Indian off-spinner Harbhajan Singh recalled the epic 2011 ODI World Cup semi-final between the two heavyweights, in Mohali, where MS Dhoni-led Men in Blue beat Pakistan by 29 runs to book a place in the final, where they beat Sri Lanka by six wickets.

"It was one of those games where I felt I was getting a bit numb. I had bowled five overs and conceded around 26-27 runs. It was a water break, and Dhoni told me, 'Bhajju pa, aap vahan se daaloge' (around the wicket). Kamran (Umar) was playing good, so was Misbah. And they were scoring runs and the partnership was getting dangerous," Harbhajan told anchor Jatin Sapru on Star Sports' Dil Se India.

Ahead of India's departure for their tour of Zimbabwe, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced that KL Rahul will also be part of the trip to the African nation. 'It could've been avoided': Aakash Chopra on Rahul replacing Dhawan as India captain for Zimbabwe tour

Team India's Asia Cup squad was announced on August 8 (Monday) by the BCCI selection committee. The Rohit Sharma-led line-up saw the return of senior pros Virat Kohli and vice-captain KL Rahul but Jasprit Bumrah's absence stunned one and all as the premier pacer has sustained a back injury.

Thus, Rohit & Co. will be without Bumrah for the forthcoming Asian championship, to be held in the UAE from August 27-September 11. The speedster is now undergoing rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy (NCA), Bengaluru and no date has been set for his return. As per a report, it seems Bumrah's comeback won't be anytime soon, and might also miss the 2022 T20 World Cup.

Speaking to InsideSport, a BCCI official has claimed that Bumrah needs to be managed very carefully. "Yes, it’s concerning. He is back in rehab and will get the best medical advice available. The problem is it’s his old injury and that is what is concerning. We have just two months left for the World Cup and he has got this injury at the worst possible time. We are closely monitoring his condition. He is the best bowler in cricket and needs to be carefully managed,” an official told.

Needless to say, Bumrah will be missed in the upcoming Asia Cup, which will be played in the shortest format for the second time in the tournament history.
