Patel achieved the historic feat on Day 2 of the ongoing second Test against India at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Saturday. Patel joined an elite list featuring the legendary Anil Kumble and Jim Laker.

It was a magical spell from Patel, who picked up four wickets on Day 1 of the Mumbai Test before following it up with the remaining six wickets during India's first innings on Day 2. Kumble was the last bowler to pick up all ten wickets in an innings of a Test match when he achieved the feat in the Delhi Test against Pakistan in 1999.

History-maker Patel was lauded by the cricket fraternity on social media as players, fans and experts lauded his brilliant effort against India. BCCI president Sourav Ganguly recently opened up on how he managed to convince Rahul Dravid to take up the Team India head coach role after Ravi Shastri's exit. Dravid was not sure about becoming the India head coach and the job requires him to travel around the globe for the most part of the year which would mean he would have to stay away from his family and young children. But Ganguly somehow managed to convince his former India teammate, who was serving as the head of the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru to become the new head coach of the Indian team.

"We had Rahul in mind for a long period of time, both me and Jay, but he wasn't agreeing because of the time away from home [and] because doing a national team's job is [about being] on the road for about 8-9 months in a year and he has two young children," Ganguly said on the show Backstage with Boria.

New Zealand bundled out for 62: A look at lowest totals by Kiwis against India in Test cricket

New Zealand spinner Ajaz Patel has been on a record-breaking spree in the ongoing second Test against India at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. After picking up a magnificent ten-wicket haul during India's first innings of the Test match, Patel continued his bowling heroics during the hosts' second innings on Day 3. He followed up his perfect ten with four wickets in the second innings to break England legend Ian Botham's 41-year-old record.

Patel, who single-handedly bundled out India in their first innings, finished with figures of 14/225 after his four wickets in the second innings. He now holds the record for best-ever bowling figures by any bowler in a Test match against India, bettering Botham's 13/106 against India in 1980. Incidentally, Botham had also achieved the feat at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai to power England to a ten-wicket win.

Patel also surpassed New Zealand great Daniel Vettori to take the second spot on the list of Kiwi bowlers with best match figures in Tests. Vettori was second with his match figures of 12/149 against Australia in the year 2000 but Patel has not pushed him to the third spot and is only behind legend Richard Hadlee, who had taken 15/123 against Australia in 1985.

Kohli was bowled by spinner Ravindra during India's second innings on Day 3 of the Test match on Sunday (December 05).

The dismissal took place in the 63rd over when Kohli was batting on 36 and inching close towards his half-century. It was bowled short by Ravindra and the ball further drifted away from Kohli, who went for the cut but was beaten as the ball took an inside edge of his bat and ended up crashing into the stumps.

Kohli was left in disbelief as he stood stunned in the middle with a cheeky grin on his face. The Indian captain's reaction to his dismissal soon went viral on social media.

Virat Kohli in disbelief after getting bowled by Rachin Ravindra in 2nd Test against New Zealand - WATCH

Despite Ajaz Patel's historic ten-wicket haul on Day 2 of the ongoing second Test between India and New Zealand in Mumbai, the hosts dominated the proceedings. India posted a strong total of 325 runs on the board in their first innings before bundling out the Kiwis for a paltry 62 to gain control in the game.

It was an exceptional effort from the Indian bowling attack as R Ashwin and Mohammed Siraj combined to rip through New Zealand batting line-up picking up seven wickets between them. While Siraj ran through the top-order, Ashwin wreaked havoc on New Zealand's lower-middle order.

Siraj bowled a sensational spell for India to get the hosts off to a great start. He drew the first blood by removing opener Will Young before dismissing Tom Latham in quick succession. He then followed it up with the wicket of Ross Taylor to finish with excellent figures of 3/19 in his four overs.

It was a stellar display of fast bowling from Siraj as well as shrewd captaincy from Virat Kohli, who used the pacer well and plotted Latham's dismissal with a short ball. Former India cricketer and popular commentator Aakash Chopra heaped praise on Siraj for his brilliant spell and also credited Kohli for his captaincy.

Chopra said the way Siraj set up Latham was the reason why he had missed Kohli in the first Test against New Zealand where Ajinkya Rahane had led the side in the regular skipper's absence.

"That is where I missed Virat Kohli, the captain. Mohammed Siraj set Tom Latham up brilliantly, and it’s not only the wicket of the bowler. Kohli played a role in it,” said Chopra on Star Sports.

"In the last Test, we didn’t see a single bouncer against Tom Latham. With Siraj, you can expect short-pitched bowls more often than not. So he bowled short and they had the leg-side trap ready for Latham. It was a good wicket and wonderful captaincy," he added.

Kohli had missed the series-opener against New Zealand due to workload management as he was rested after India's T20 World Cup 2021 campaign. Kohli had also missed the three-match T20I series against the Black Caps.

'That is where I missed Virat Kohli': Aakash Chopra lauds Indian captain as NZ get skittled out for 62

Team India opener Mayank Agarwal continued his purple patch with the willow in India's second innings of the ongoing second Test against New Zealand at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Sunday. Agarwal, who had slammed a magnificent century in the first innings, followed it up with a brilliant fifty in the second innings. However, he missed out on a chance to notch up twin hundreds in the Test match as he fell for 62 in the second innings.

Agarwal was on the verge of becoming the only seventh Indian batter to score a century in both innings of a Test match. He looked in sublime touch and played with great control during the second innings against the Kiwis but was dismissed on 62 by Ajaz Patel in the 32nd over. Nonetheless, he managed to enter an elite list featuring the legendary Sunil Gavaskar.

Agarwal joined the elite list of Indian batters to have scored back-to-back fifty-plus scores as an opener in a Test match at the Wankhede Stadium. He emulated the likes of Gavaskar (205, 73 in 1978), Chetan Chauhan (52, 84 in 1978) and Kris Srikkanth (71, 65 in 1987). His half-century helped India take their lead past the 400-run mark in the Mumbai Test.

With the help of Mayank's 150-run knock, India had posted a strong total of 325 runs on the board in their first innings despite a brilliant spell from spinner Ajaz Patel, who picked up a historic ten-wicket haul, becoming only the third bowler in Test history to take all ten wickets in an innings of a Test match.

However, New Zealand failed to capitalise as they were bundled out for a paltry 62 in their first innings and ended up conceding a massive lead of 263 runs to the hosts. India have now extended their lead to over 470 runs in their second innings as they look to secure a big win in the second Test.

Indian spinner R Ashwin had a brain fade moment in the middle of the pitch while batting during India's first innings on Day 2 of the ongoing second Test against New Zealand on Saturday. Ashwin ended up going for a review after being bowled as many were left baffled by the spinner's decision. The incident happened on the penultimate delivery pf the second over on Day 2 of the Mumbai Test.

Spinner Ajaz Patel, who has been bowling brilliantly, had picked up the wicket of Wriddhiman Saha on the previous delivery and cleaned up Ashwin on the next ball. It was a slower one from Patel which drifted inside and beat Ashwin's defence to crash into the stumps.

However, Ashwin probably thought the New Zealand players were celebrating a stump out decision and ended up signalling for DRS to everyone's surprise. Ashwin's brain-fade moment soon became a talking point on Twitter with many trolling the Indian spinner for his decision to go for the DRS while ignoring that he had been bowled.

Rohit Sharma looks set to take over as the new vice-captain of the Indian Test team after being appointed as the skipper of the T20I side. Rohit is in line to replace Ajinkya Rahane as the vice-captain in Tests for India's upcoming tour of South Africa. BCCI has confirmed that the tour will go ahead despite the Omicron threat in the country.

COVID-19 cases in South Africa have surged after the emergence of the Omicron variant but BCCI and Cricket South Africa have decided to go ahead with the tour. The tour is all set to begin on December 26 but will only consist of three Tests and as many ODIs as the four-match T20I series has been postponed to a later date.

Rohit is likely to be announced as the new vice-captain of the Test team when the squad for the South Africa series is announced. Rohit is currently not part of India's ongoing two-match Test series against New Zealand at home as he was rested but the senior batter reportedly had a big say in the hosts' squad selection.

“The selection meeting will happen in a few days. It is likely that Rohit will be made the vice-captain of the Test team. The Indian team is committed to travel to South Africa. However, the tour will not go on as per schedule. BCCI has communicated to Cricket South Africa (CSA) that it could start the tour with the Boxing Day Test,” a top BCCI official was quoted saying by Times of India.

The move was reportedly on the cards for a while considering the dip in Rahane's performances of late. While he has been completely sidelined from white-ball cricket, Rahane has failed to perform consistently for India in the longest format as well and has struggled massively.

Rahane averages just around 36 in Tests in the last five years and had failed to deliver during India's tour of England earlier this year where he managed to amass only 109 runs in seven innings. His struggles continued in the ongoing New Zealand series as the experienced right-hander scored only 39 runs in two innings before missing the ongoing second Test due to an injury.

Virat Kohli-led India endured a woeful campaign at the T20 World Cup 2021 in the UAE this year as they failed to qualify for the semi-finals after making a group-stage exit from the tournament. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) president Sourav Ganguly recently opened up on the team's performance in the showpiece event and called it the 'poorest' performance in the last four-five years.

Ganguly said the Indian team didn't play with enough freedom and it felt like the Men in Blue were playing only to 15% of their ability as they failed to qualify for the semi-finals after two back-to-back losses in their first two matches. India had lost their opening encounter against Pakistan before slipping to a defeat in their next game against New Zealand.

"To be honest, 2017 [and] 2019, I think India was good. 2017 Champions Trophy we lost the final to Pakistan at the Oval, I was a commentator then. Then the 2019 World Cup in England, we were exceptional right throughout, beat everyone and lost to New Zealand in the semi-final - one bad day and the entire good work for two months was just wiped away. [I am] a little disappointed with the way we played this World Cup. I think this has been the poorest of all what I have seen in the last four-five years," Ganguly said on the show Backstage with Boria.

India lost their opening encounter against Pakistan by ten wickets before Kiwis thrashed Kohli & Co. by eight wickets to all but end their hopes of making it to the semis. India went on to win their next three games on the trot by big margins but six points were not enough to help them qualify for the top four.

"I don't know what's the reason but I just felt they did not play with enough freedom this World Cup. Sometimes it happens in big tournaments, you just get stuck and when I saw them playing against Pakistan and New Zealand - I just felt this was the team which was playing to 15% of its ability. And sometimes you can't just a finger on it that this is the reason why it happened," Ganguly added.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Jay Shah has confirmed that India's upcoming tour of South Africa this month is on despite the threat due to the new coronavirus variant - Omicron in the country. However, Shah said Team India will travel to South Africa only for three Tests and three ODIs while the four-match T20I series will be played at a later date.

There has been a lot of uncertainty surrounding India's upcoming tour of South Africa as COVID-19 cases have surged in the country after the emergence of the Omicron variant which has been labelled as a 'variant of concern' by the World Health Organisation (WHO). The cases have gone up significantly in the Gauteng province where India and South Africa are scheduled to play the first two Tests of the three-match series.

However, after assurance from Cricket South Africa over the strict bio-bubble arrangements for the visitors, BCCI has decided to give a go-ahead to the Indian team for the tour. "BCCI has confirmed CSA that the Indian team will travel for three Tests and three ODIs. The remaining four T20Is will be played at a later date," Shah told ANI.

Omicron recently led to the suspension of all major sporting events in South Africa with the Netherlands cricket team also cutting short their tour of the country. A few golf and Rugby games also had to be postponed or called off in the wake of the rise in COVID-19 cases across the country.

The India A cricket team, however, has stayed back in South Africa for their three unofficial Test matches against the South Africa A side. While two games have concluded the third match is all set to get underway from Monday (December 06).

As per their original schedule, India had to leave for South Africa next week after the conclusion of the ongoing home Test series against New Zealand. The first Test between India and South Africa is set to get underway from December 17 as per the schedule. However, it remains to be seen if BCCI will stick with the old schedule or a new schedule will be followed.

Former India batting coach Sanjay Bangar has heaped praise on Mayank Agarwal after his brilliant century on the opening day of the ongoing second Test between India and New Zealand at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. Bangar said Agarwal is the most attacking Indian batter against spin since Virender Sehwag when it comes to the longest format of the game.

Agarwal looked in a great rhythm right from the start of India's first innings in the second Test on Friday as he notched up an unbeaten 120-run-knock to help the hosts post 221/4 at stumps. Agarwal combined with his opening partner Shubman Gill (44) to get India off to a great start with an 80-run stand for the first wicket before India lost three wickets in quick succession.

He then combined with Shreyas Iyer (18) to add another 60 runs for the fourth wicket and tackled Azaj Patel really well. The Kiwi spinner was on fire as he picked up all the four wickets that India lost on the first day of the series-opener. Bangar lauded the Indian opener for his terrific strokeplay against spin and called him one of the best Indian batters against spin in Tests since Sehwag.

"In my opinion, Mayank Agarwal is the most attacking batter against spin I have seen since Virender Sehwag for India in Test cricket. Everyone says that he steps out and plays the aerial shots well and targets the straighter boundaries," Bangar said on Star Sports.

"But there was one special thing seen in this knock and it was also because of the extra bounce, that he played so many shots off the back foot. He played very good pull shots when the ball was slightly back of length," he added.

Agarwal was the top scorer for India on Day 1 as he notched up an unbeaten 120 off 246 balls laced with 14 fours and four sixes. He posted an unbeaten stand of 61 runs for the fourth wicket with Wriddhiman Saha (25), who remained not out on 25 at the end of Day 1's play as India looked in control.

India will be looking to post a big total on the board in their first innings when they resume their batting on Day 2 of the Mumbai Test on Friday.

Indian skipper Virat Kohli had a disappointing outing on his return to international cricket on Friday (December 03) as he was dismissed on a duck in the ongoing second Test against New Zealand. Kohli, who had skipped the T20I series and was also rested for the first Test against New Zealand, could not open his account on his return for the Indian team.

Kohli was dismissed on a duck after playing four deliveries in India's first innings of the second Test at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. The dismissal took place in the 30th over when spinner Ajaz Patel trapped the Indian skipper LBW and went for a big shout. The on-field umpire declared Kohli out but the Indian captain was quick to go for a review.

Controversy erupted after the replays showed that the ball had clearly touched the bat and the pad at the same time. Due to no conclusive evidence, the on-field umpire's decision was upheld by the third umpire, who deemed Kohli out after the DRS. Kohli had a brief chat with the umpire before walking back as he looked upset over failing to open his dismissal.

Virat Kohli upset as controversial DRS decision sends him packing on a duck in 2nd Test vs NZ - WATCH

Team India will lock horns with Kane Williamson-led New Zealand in the second and final Test at the iconic Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai on December 3 (Friday). After the riveting Kanpur Test, which ended in a draw, the two sides have all to play for with the series on the line.

While Williamson-led Black Caps will be confident after their spirited fight in the first Test, India will be boosted by regular captain Virat Kohli's return into the playing XI. However, his return will see one of the main batters warm the bench. Though vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane averages a mere 19.57 in 12 games this year, Cheteshwar Pujara has also not scored a ton since early 2019. The pressure is on both the senior pros but former Indian opener Wasim Jaffer feels Kohli is likely to make it to the XI at the expense of Mayank Agarwal.

Mayank, who has a high score of 243, returned with 13 and 17 in the Kanpur Test. Hence, his position is also under threat.

Jaffer told ESPNCricinfo, "The way Pujara batted in England, it was good to see that he was playing at a quicker pace. He is used to Indian conditions, he has to adopt a positive approach once he gets set onto the crease.

On Rahane, Jaffer insisted that he looked in good touch in the first essay of the Kanpur Test but needs to capitalise on his starts. "In the Kanpur Test, he would've lamented his shot in the first innings. He looked positive but he squandered the opportunity. But I want him to play with the same approach that he showed in the first innings," Jaffer added.

With no Mayank in his XI, Jaffer also named KS Bharat as an opener along with Shubman Gill. It will be interesting to see if Wriddhiman Saha gets dropped after his gutsy 61 not out in the second innings of the first Test. Moreover, he has been declared fit by Captain Kohli ahead of the series finale. In addition, his XI included Mohammed Siraj, replacing Ishant Sharma.

India tour of SA under dark clouds amid Omicron scare, likely to be pushed back by a week : Report

The world is once again under Covid-10 threat. While the pandemic was still far from over, the new Covid variant -- named Omicron -- has once again caused panic worldwide. The normalcy which was restored in many parts might again be curtailed as the threat from the new variant is being closely monitored.

Hence, it might also affect India's tour of South Africa, which is set to commence from December 17. Plenty of cricketing action has already been severely impacted due to the Omicron threat. Thus, Team India's forthcoming tour to the African nation, which has already reported Covid cases due to the Omicron variant, might also be rescheduled. However, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI)'s President Sourav Ganguly has confirmed that the tour is on as of now.

For the unversed, Virat Kohli-led India are scheduled to leave for South Africa immediately after the conclusion of the two-match Test series versus New Zealand at home. As per the schedule, they will play three Tests, equal number of ODIs and four T20Is in the rainbow nation, from December 17-January 26.

India's last tour of SA had taken place in early 2018, when they had played three Tests, six ODIs and three T20Is.

India’s tour of South Africa on as of now, we have time to decide, reveals BCCI chief Sourav Ganguly

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) treasurer Arun Dhumal has said the Indian cricket team's tour of South Africa is on as of now despite the threat from Omicron variant growing in the region. Sporting events across South Africa shut down recently after the new variant of coronavirus was detected in the country.

Doubts were also raised over India's upcoming tour of South Africa, however, the BCCI has maintained that the tour remains on as per schedule. The Indian cricketers are scheduled to leave for South Africa in the second week of December for a full-fledged series consisting of three Tests, as many ODIs and four T20Is. The first Test of the three-match series is all set to get underway from December 17.

BCCI treasurer Arun Dhumal said the Indian cricket board will stand with Cricket South Africa in the current time of crisis but will not compromise with the safety of the players. South Africa's foreign ministry has said the government will provide a secure bio-bubble for the Indian team to ensure the safety of all players and support staff.

“We stand with them (Cricket South Africa), the only thing is we won't compromise on players' safety. As of now we have a chartered flight going to Johannesburg as scheduled and players will be in a bio bubble," Dhumal told news agency PTI.

"We are in constant touch with the Cricket South Africa (CSA) officials. Whatever best we can do to not compromise the series we will try and do but if the situation aggravates and if it compromises our players' safety and health, we will see,” he added, when asked about possible changes in the venue of the Test matches to reduce the risk of COVID-19.

BCCI has also decided not to call back the India A team which is currently in action in South Africa and playing an unofficial Test series against South Africa A. The BCCI has pointed out that there is no advisory yet from the Indian government on not travelling to South Africa and that the board is ready to follow the government's advisory.

"In the end, whatever is the Government of India advisory, we will abide by that,” said Dhumal.

IND vs NZ: R Ashwin shares how Harbhajan's 2001 spell vs Australia inspired him to become a spinner

India have retained the second spot on the World Test Championship (WTC) points table after a thrilling draw against New Zealand in the first Test of the ongoing two-match series in Kanpur on Monday. Rachin Ravindra and Ajaz Patel combined to deny India a win as they stood tall with an unbeaten stand for the tenth wicket on Day five of the Test match.

Shreyas Iyer made a dream Test debut for India as he notched up a century and a half-century in the two innings respectively. His 105-run knock helped India post 345 runs on the board in the first innings before New Zealand replied with 296 runs in their first innings. Iyer then scored a gritty 65 in the second innings to combine with Wriddhiman Saha (61) to bail India out of trouble and post 234 runs on the board.

New Zealand were handed a target of 284 runs in their final innings with nine wickets left heading into the final day. Opener Tom Lathan (52) and nightwatchman William Somerville (36) batted out the entire first session to keep the visitors in the game before the Indian bowlers got the hosts back into the contest with three wickets in the second session and five wickets in the final session.

However, due to bad light, the game had to be called eleven minutes early as Patel and Ravindra stood tall to deny India the tenth wicket. India were forced to settle for a draw which meant they managed to take only four out of the available twelve points from the Kanpur Test.

India are currently at the second spot on the WTC points table with 30 points from five matches. The teams are noe ranked on the basis of the percentage of points. While the winning teams get 12 points (100%), each team gets 6 points (50%) for a tie and 4 points (33.33%) for a draw. The teams are also penalised for slow over-rate.

Harbhajan Singh reacts as R Ashwin topples him to become India's 3rd highest wicket-taker in Tests

The first Test between India and New Zealand ended in a dramatic fashion as the Kane Williamson-led visitors managed to earn a draw. Ajinkya Rahane & Co. couldn't claim the last wicket as the Black Caps ended at 165/9 in pursuit of 284 on the final day on Monday (November 29).

While the result couldn't be produced, the series opener lived upto expectations due to its sporting track. The groundstaff did a splendid job in preparing a track which had something to offer for pacers, spinners as well as the batters. Hence, the contest went into the last half hour and had everything in it to be labelled as a classic encounter even though no team managed a win.

Hence, Team India head coach Rahul Dravid was impressed with the groundsmen and donated generously (approximately 470 usd) for their hard work.

New Zealand pulled off a thrilling draw against India in the first Test in Kanpur on Tuesday (September 29) after tail-ender Azaj Patel and debutant Rachin Ravindra showcased remarkable resistance to deny India the final wicket towards the end of the final session on Day 5 of the series-opener on Monday.

Chasing the target of 284 runs, New Zealand resumed their second innings on Monday with opener Tom Latham (52) and nightwatchman William Somerville combining to add 76 runs for the second wicket. The duo displayed remarkable grittiness to hand the first session to New Zealand on the final day before Umesh Yadav dismissed Somerville.

New Zealand then lost three wickets in the post-lunch session before losing another five in the final session. However, the Indian bowlers could only manage to get eight wickets on the final day of the Test match as Patel (2) and Ravindra (18) played out 114 balls between them to deny India victory and help New Zealand draw the game.

Questions were raised over India's timing of declaring their second innings late on Day 4 while Axar Patel and Wriddhiman Saha's pace of scoring runs during their unbeaten stand of 67 runs for the seventh wicket on Day 4 also became a talking point. However, Rahane defended India's timing of declaration and said the hosts couldn't have done anything differently to win the game.

"Not really (declared earlier?), we tried our best. They played really well. I think the way we came back in the second session was good. The fast bowlers too bowled really well," Rahane said when asked about the timing of declaration on Day 4.

"We wanted to get that partnership going, put some runs on board. Saha and Axar batted really well. Before that Shreyas and Ashwin's partnership was crucial. We wanted to bowl four overs yesterday and 90-95 in all.

"I don't think we could have done anything differently," he added.

The second Test between the two sides is all set to get underway from December 03 at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. Regular skipper Virat Kohli will be making his comeback in the second Test and will be leading the side.

Ajinkya Rahane defends timing of declaration as New Zealand pull off thrilling draw in 1st Test

Virat Kohli was rested for the three T20Is between India and New Zealand and also remained out of action for the two-match Test series opener, at Kanpur. Nonetheless, the 33-year-old is gearing up to return to action on the 22-yard cricket strip for the second and final Test versus the Black Caps, to be held at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai on December 3.

With Kohli set to return and walk into the playing XI, India will have selection issues as the Rahul Dravid-led team management will have to drop someone from the top or middle order. Given that Mayank Agarwal might be dropped, following his low returns in the Kanpur Test, it will also lead to changes in the opening pair. If they consider a batter to be dropped from No. 3 to 7, the onus will fall on Cheteshwar Pujara, Ajinkya Rahane, Shreyas Iyer and Ravindra Jadeja. While Pujara and Rahane are the senior pros, the duo have disappointed for long with the bat. On the other hand, Iyer and Jadeja's returns with the bat in the series opener cannot be easily overlooked.

Speaking on the YouTube channel Khelneeti, former Indian all-rounder Nikhil Chopra talked about Rahane's dreadful run in the whites and called for his omission, with Kohli replacing him in the series finale. The cricketer-turned-commentator Chopra opined that the Indian think tank should drop Rahane rather than Mayank. "Instead of dropping Mayank Agarwal, Ajinkya Rahane should make way for Virat Kohli. Rahane doesn't have a great average and it shows his struggles in recent years," Chopra said.

He also added, "Youngsters should be given a chance to play in India. It is important to give them confidence ahead of an overseas tour. If you are looking to drop Agarwal, then I'd rather pick Suryakumar Yadav for the Mumbai Test."

It will be interesting to see if who will make way for regular captain Kohli for the second and final Test in Mumbai. While Rahane's form has been poor for quite sometime, he remains Kohli's deputy in whites. Though he had an ordinary run in the series opener, Rahane led India reasonably well in the Kanpur Test, which ended in a draw with India needing one more wicket to win the contest.

R Ashwin dismissed the well-set batter Tom Latham, for 52, on Day 5 of the first Test between India and New Zealand at Kanpur. Latham, who missed out on a well-deserved century in the first innings, was standing tall in the middle -- with visitors chasing 284 on the final day -- before he tried to cut but played it down to hit the stumps. With Latham's dismissal, Ajinkya Rahane & Co. not only moved closer to a win in the series opener, but Ashwin also achieved a big feat under his belt.

Ashwin, who made his Test debut in 2011, moved past veteran off-spinner Harbhajan Singh's wicket-tally (417) in the format to become the third-highest wicket-taker for the country in the purest format. The top-five wicket-takers for India in Tests are as follows:

Anil Kumble - 619

Kapil Dev - 434

R Ashwin - 418*

Harbhajan Singh - 417

Talking about Ashwin's career, the wily off-spinner has so far accounted for 30 five-fers and 7 ten-wicket hauls in the purest format. The 35-year-old has 291 wickets at home, 123 scalps in away Tests whereas also has 4 victims in neutral venues. The spinner has been most dominant while playing at home but has also enjoyed success in Sri Lanka and West Indies. In India's recent assignments in SENA countries, Ashwin has remained economical and had some success in England and Australia. For the unversed, he was India's second-highest wicket-taker in the 2020/21 Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia.

The New Zealand bowlers ran through the Indian top-order during the first session of Day 4 of the ongoing first Test between the two sides in Kanpur on Sunday. Resuming their second innings from 1/14 on the penultimate day of the Test match, the hosts were blown away under pressure as Tim Southee and Kyle Jamieson combined to wreak havoc with the ball.

Both Cheteshwar Pujara and stand-in skipper Ajinkya Rahane failed to deliver as their struggles continued in the Kanpur Test. The duo was sent back cheaply when India needed them the most under pressure. Pujara was the first Indian batter to be dismissed on Day 4 as he was removed by Jamieson on 22 off 33 balls. The experienced right-hander equalled an unwanted record after another failure in the whites.

Pujara equalled former India captain Ajit Wadekar, who had gone 39 matches without scoring a hundred while batting at no.3 for India in Tests. Pujara has now gone 39 matches without a century for Team India in the longest format and will be hopeful of breaking the unwanted streak in the next game. Earlier, Pujara had played 38 innings without scoring a hundred between 2013 to 2016.

Ajinkya Rahane fails again

A number of former cricketers and experts have raised concerns over Rahane's recent struggles with the bat and questioned his spot in the Test team. Rahane, who is leading the side in the absence of regular skipper Kohli, was dismissed after scoring only 4 runs in India's second innings on Sunday.

Coming out to bat at no.4, Rahane opened his account with a boundary before being dismissed on the next ball by spinner Ajaz Patel. He had scored 35 runs in the first innings of the ongoing Kanpur Test. With Kohli returning to lead the side for the second Test, it remains to be seen if Rahane will be able to keep his spot in the second Test.

Pujara equals unwanted record, Rahane fails again as India struggle in Kanpur Test against New Zealand

Team India star Shreyas Iyer had a dream Test debut against New Zealand in the ongoing series-opener between the two sides at the Green Park Stadium in Kanpur. After a magnificent century in India's first innings, Iyer followed it up with a brilliant half-century in the second innings to become the first India batter to score a ton and a fifty on Test debut.

India's top-order suffered a terrible collapse in their second innings on Day 4 of the Test match on Sunday as the visitors were left reeling at 51/5 at one point. Iyer showed remarkable grit and batted well to bail the hosts out of trouble with his terrific knock.

He combined with R Ashwin (32) to post a 52-run stand for the sixth wicket before adding 64 runs for the seventh wicket with Wriddhiman Shaha, who also played an amazing knock of 61 runs.

Iyer revealed the advice he had recieved from head coach Rahu Dravid before going in to bat and also said it was not the first time that he found himself in such a pressure situation as he has played such knocks in domestic cricket as well.

"I had been in this situation before as well, not with the Indian team but with my Ranji team. Mindset was to play the session and play as many balls as possible. I wasn't thinking too far ahead, was just focusing on the present," Iyer told the official broadcaster at the end of the 4th day's play in Kanpur.

He revealed Dravi had asked him to stay out their in the middle for as long as possible and stay as long as he can. . "Rahul Sir had told me to bat as many balls as possible and I was determined to do that," said the right-hander, who scored 105 and 65 in the two innings of his debut Test match.

Shreyas Iyer reveals advice from head coach Rahul Dravid after dream Test debut against New Zealand

Debutant Shreyas Iyer showed his ice-cool temperament under pressure to stand tall with a fine half-century which placed India in a commanding position as they set up a stiff victory target of 284 for New Zealand on the fourth day of the opening Test here on Sunday.

India declared at 234 for 7 for an overall lead of 283 and gave the Black Caps four tricky overs to face under fading light during which they managed four runs and lost opener Will Young to Ravichandran Ashwin.

With that scalp, Ashwin became the joint third-highest wicket-taker in Indian cricket with Harbhajan Singh (417 wickets). The highest ever fourth-innings chase by a visiting team in India is 276 by Viv Richards' West Indies against the Dilip Vengsarkar-led India in 1987 at the Feroz Shah Kotla, which placed statistics on the home team's side.

The honours for India on the day were shared by Iyer (65 off 125 balls), who became the first Indian to score a hundred and fifty on debut and the plucky Wriddhiman Saha (61 not out, 126 balls), who battled stiff neck to make an invaluable contribution which will certainly count a lot in the final context of the match.

Axar Patel (28 not out) then conjured another 67-run eighth-wicket stand with Saha to slowly take the match out of the Black Caps' grasp. If New Zealand are still in the match, credit must go to their tireless seam bowling duo of Tim Southee (22-2-75-3) and Kyle Jamieson (17-6-40-3), who showed an exhibition of top-class bowling on an unresponsive track.

However, it will now depend on how much time it takes for India's spin troika to roll over New Zealand, whose openers showed a lot of gumption on the second afternoon and third morning. Also if skipper Williamson can do something mind-blowing with the willow, there might just be a great contest on the cards.

If the morning belonged to New Zealand's bowlers, who decided to prolong Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane's bad patch, the afternoon was Iyer's time under the sun while Saha did his bit, reaching his sixth half-century in the final session of the day.

This is certainly an innings which will give Saha's Test career a new lease of life. This was after stand-in captain Rahane and his temporary deputy Pujara's saga of failures continued leaving India tottering at 51 for 5 in the first 75 minutes of the morning session.

But credit to Iyer, who once again displayed steely temperament on the way to his second 50-plus score in the match, hitting eight fours and a huge six over long off against Will Sommerville. His best shot, however, was an inside out lofted drive off left-arm spinner Ajaz Patel. It was a difficult shot that was perfectly executed.

It was followed by a square cut in the same over as Williamson erred by bowling his spinners for way too long. That was proved when Southee removed Iyer at the stroke of tea when he tried to pull one that was drifting down leg side.
Credit should also be given to Saha as he batted with an open-chested stance compared to his usual side-on which reduces the pronounced neck movement.

He played his customary game of dabs and flicks and also produced an occasional slog pull for six as his innings had four fours and a six. However, on the fourth morning, Southee, a practitioner of conventional swing bowling, took a master-class on how to bowl on an unresponsive Indian track, classically setting up the batters.

But before Southee got into the act, Kyle Jamieson (13-6-26-3) targeted Pujara's (22 off 33 balls) ribcage, getting one to rear up on this dead track and it brushed the India No. 3's gloves into the hands of keeper Tom Blundell.
Rahane (4 off 15 balls) is out of form and the world knows about that.

However, Ajaz Patel (17-3-60-1), who has looked way below Test class, then produced his best delivery of the match. An arm ball that was fired in with the angle caught Rahane plumb in-front while he tried to play a forward defensive prod.

Mayank Agarwal (17) did all the hardwork in the first hour but Southee (15.2-3-48-3) set him up with deliveries that came into him from good length spot as he played with a closed bat-face.

Then he pitched on the same spot and, to Agarwal's horror, it shaped slightly away and he had committed to a closed bat-face. The result was a regulation catch to Tom Latham in the second slip. For Ravindra Jadeja (0), Southee used the width of the crease with an angular delivery that wrapped him on the pads.

Also Read: Shreyas Iyer scripts history, becomes 1st Indian to slam ton & half-century on Test debut This is certainly an innings which will give Saha's Test career a new lease of life.

India vs New Zealand: Debutant Shreyas Iyer, gritty Wriddhiman Saha set up an intriguing final day

India batter Shreyas Iyer continued his purple patch on his Test debut against New Zealand on Day 4 of the ongoing series-opener between the two sides in Kanpur on Sunday. Iyer scripted history with the bat as he became the first Indian to score a century and a half-century in his debut Test match.

The right-hander came out to bat at no.5 when India were reeling at 45/3 having lost both Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane in quick succession before Mayank Agarwal was sent packing quickly as well. Iyer survived an early scare as a thick edge against Tim Southee saw the ball landing in no man's land.

Iyer went on to make the most of the opportunity and slammed a brilliant half-century under pressure to bail India out of trouble and help them stage a comeback in the game.

Iyer, who had scored a magnificent 105 in India's first innings of the Test match, notched up 65 runs in their second innings on Sunday. He combined with R Ashwin (32) to post a 52-run stand for the sixth wicket before stitching a 64-run stand for the sixth wicket with Wriddhiman Saha.

With his maiden half-century in Tests, Iyer scripted a massive feat as he became the first Indian with a ton and a fifty on Test debut. He became the tenth batter overall in the world to achieve the stellar feat. He also joined the legendary Sunil Gavaskar in an elite list by becoming the third Indian with two fifty-plus scores on Test debut.

Gavaskar had notched up 65 and 67 on his Test debut against West Indies in 1971 while Dilawar Hussain was the first Indian to achieve the feat when he scored 59 and 57 respectively in the two innings of his debut Test against England in 1933-34.

Incidentally, Iyer had received his maiden Test cap from batting legend Gavaskar himself before the start of the Test match on Thursday and did well to join an elite list featuring him with his ton and half-century on debut. Iyer's 65-run-knock helped India stretch their lead past the 200-run mark and get into a comfortable position against the visitors after a top-order collapse.

Saha and Axar Patel are currently out in the middle for India as the hosts look to take their lead close to 300 runs before inviting New Zealand to bat in their second innings of the game.

Shreyas Iyer scripts history, becomes 1st Indian to slam ton & half-century on Test debut

Axar Patel wreaked havoc on New Zealand batting line-up on Day 3 of the ongoing first Test between India and the Kiwis in Kanpur on Saturday. Axar picked up a five-wicket haul as India bundled out the Kiwis for 296 runs in their first innings to gain a crucial lead of 49 runs ahead of their second innings.

It was a brilliant spell from Axar, who spun a web around the New Zealand batting line-up and continuously troubled the Kiwi batters. Axar finished with brilliant figures of 5/62 in his 4 overs and was the pick of the bowlers for Team India in the series-opener at Kanpur.

Former India cricketer Wasi Jaffer, who is known for his witty tweets and hilarious memes on Twitter, took a dig at Axar and pointed out his 'only mistake' in the Test match after his sensational spell. Jaffer, who is known for entertaining cricket fans on Twitter with his funny side, posted a picture of the match ball which was gifted to Axar after his five-wicket haul and said the only mistake the left-arm spinner made was putting the wrong date on the ball.

"The only mistake Axar Patel made today was putting wrong date on the match ball. 27th November hai bapu @akshar2026 #INDvNZ," Jaffer wrote in a tweet.

Axar was quick to respond to Jaffer's tweet and clarified that it was not him but his Indian teammate Suryakumar Yadav, who had put the wrong date on the match ball. Suryakumar also joined the banter on Twitter and reacted hilariously to Jaffer's idea of punishment for his mistake. The banter between the trio became the talk of town among cricket fans on Twitter.
