Indian cricket team to play two T20Is against West Indies in USA during the Caribbean tour: Report

KL Rahul has become an all-format player for Team India in current times. While Rahul dons the role of an opener in Tests and T20Is, the right-hander plays in the middle-order for India in the 50-over format. However, he wasn't a regular starter in all forms of the game a few years back.

In the 2019 ODI World Cup, Rahul was part of India's middle-order before Shikhar Dhawan's injury promoted him as an opener along with Rohit Sharma. Rahul returned with 361 runs in his maiden 50-over World Cup, with a century and two fifties. Despite his good run with the willow in the showpiece event, Rahul was part of India's T20I, ODI and Test squads for the following West Indies tour, however, he was dropped from the playing XI in the white-ball series.

Rahul recently spilled the beans on his sudden omission from India's playing XI. In a chat with Gaurav Kapoor in the new season of Breakfast with Champions, Rahul said, "I remember in 2019, I think we played the World Cup and right after it, we went to the West Indies for a series. I played the World Cup, I did decently well and then we went into the series and I got dropped. I was messaging him, he said 'Come by the pool. I'm having a drink'. It was his 300th game the next day so he was very happy and he had some friends over. So I went. I was by the pool. He came, sat with me, spoke to me that why are you not playing."

Rahul then revealed how Universe Boss Chris Gayle came to his aid and lifted his spirits. "You know, I obviously was frustrated because I played the World Cup and I'm not playing this. Makes no sense. So, I was just talking to him and he's like 'See you can always say that you're not playing because of 100 other reasons but it's in your hands whether you play or not. If 70 is not enough, get 150. If you are getting 150, get 200 if that's not enough. That's how you need to look at things. If a 600-run IPL season is not enough, then get 800. Or like you're getting 50s, 60s in the World Cup, you should have converted that and gotten 100-120s. Then no one has the power to drop you'," he further added.

Women's World Cup, India vs West Indies: Stunning Smriti Mandhana scores her 5th ODI ton - Video

Smriti Mandhana and Harmanpreet Kaur slammed centuries apiece as Indian batters tormented the West Indies bowling attack in the ongoing ICC Women's ODI World Cup 2022 on Saturday. After a disappointing show in their last game against New Zealand, the Indian women's team produced an emphatic performance with the bat against West Indies.

After opting to bat first, India got off to a good start as openers Mandhana and Yastika Bhatia (31) added 49 runs for the first wicket. The Women in Blue then lost quick wickets in the middle as the likes of captain Mithali (5) and Deepti Sharma (15) were sent back cheaply with India in a spot of bother.

Mandhana and Harmanpreet then combined to post a mammoth stand of 184 runs for the fourth wicket. While Mandhana slammed 123 runs off 119 balls laced with 13 fours and 2 sixes, Harmanpreet scored 109 runs off 107 balls with the help of ten fours and two sixes.

The duo took the West Indies bowlers to the cleaners throughout their partnership and helped India post a strong total of 317/8 in 50 overs. Harmanpreet also went on to achieve an elusive milestone with her stunning hundred as she surpassed Mithali and Mandhana in an elite list.

Women's World Cup: Century against West Indies among my top three knocks, says Smriti Mandhana

Smriti Mandhana and Harmanpreet Kaur slammed twin centuries as India produced a splendid batting display to notch up a comprehensive 155-run win over West Indies and bring their campaign back on track at the ICC Women's ODI World Cup here on Saturday.

While Mandhana smashed her fifth ODI hundred, a sensational 123 off 119 balls studded with 13 fours and two sixes, Kaur had 10 hits to the fence and two maximums in her 107-ball 109, which was her fourth ton and the first since hitting 171 not out against Australia in the 2017 World Cup.

The duo forged a 184-run stand for the fourth wicket, India's highest partnership for any wicket at the women's World Cup, to help the team post its highest total in the history of the showpiece event, a challenging 317 for eight after skipper Mithali Raj won the toss and elected to bat.

The 2017 edition finalists then returned to dismiss West Indies for 162 in 40.3 overs to keep themselves in contention for the knockout stage.

By virtue of this win, India now lead the eight-team standings with four points from three games, ahead of Australia, New Zealand and South Africa because of a better net run rate.

Chasing the stiff total, West Indies were off to a flier with openers Deandra Dottin (62) and Hayley Matthews (43) putting up 100 runs in 12.1 overs but the spin-pace duo of Sneh Rana (3/22) and Meghna Singh (2/27) put the breaks by rocking the top-order, as the Caribbeans slumped to 114 for four in 19th over.

Pooja Vastrakar (1/21) and Rajeshwari Gayakwad (1/24) then got into the act, removing Shemaine Campbelle (11) and Chinelle Henry (7) as the Windies slumped to 134 for six.

Gayakwad and Rana then combined to run-out Aaliyah Alleyne (4), while Jhulan Goswami (1/43) returned to get rid of Anisa Mohammed (2) and become the all-time highest wicket-taker in the women's World Cup with 40 wickets in her kitty.

Earlier, opener Yastika Bhatia scored a quick 31 off 21 balls, laced with six boundaries, to give the team a good start along with Mandhana.

Bhatia and Mandhana put on 49 runs for the opening stand in 6.3 overs but once she departed, Mithali Raj (5) and Deepti Sharma (15) also followed suit, leaving India tottering at 78 for three.

While Bhatia was caught and bowled by S Selman, Mithali was caught by Shamilia Connell at mid-wicket off Matthews in the 10th over.

India scored 62 for two in the powerplay with Deepti Sharma (15) making a promising start but Matthews took a one-handed stunner at first slip to get rid of the all-rounder.

Mandhana and Kaur then joined hands and steadied the innings as India amassed 100 runs in 20 overs. The duo picked the ones and twos and also got the boundaries regularly to keep the scoreboard ticking. Mandhana scored her first fifty off 66 balls with five fours in the 27th over, while the second fifty came in 43 balls.

The left-handed opener picked up her first maximum in the 33rd over when she produced a straight down the ground six off Selman. She smashed another six in the 37th over long-on off Aaliyah Alleyne.

With the two batter scoring at a good pace, 200 was up in the 36th over. Mandhana reached her 90s with a boundary and got a life when she was dropped by Alleyne on 96. She also survived an LBW appeal before reaching her century with another four off Matthews.

With Kaur also going great guns, India crossed the 250-mark in no time. Mandhana was dismissed in the 43rd over when she found Selman at deep mid-wicket but Kaur took the onus on herself and steered the team across the 300-mark even as India kept losing wickets in pursuit of quick runs.

Kaur, who also got a reprieve on 20, reached her three-figures with a single in the 47th over before edging an Alleyne delivery to keeper Campbell.

After a spirited 107-run win in their tournament-opener, Mithali Raj-led India lost their second encounter in the ongoing ICC Women's World Cup on Thursday (March 09). Facing home side New Zealand, Indian eves faltered with the bat to lose by 62 runs and now they will have to regroup ahead of their clash versus the Stafanie Taylor-led Windies line-up (who are unbeaten so far after two games).

Coming to India's run so far, they have fared well with the ball, spearheaded by Jhulan Goswami. While India managed to dismiss an average Pakistani batting line-up for a paltry 137. On the other hand, India claimed an early wicket versus the White Ferns, but couldn't get rid of the top and middle-order before staging a mini-comeback towards the end of the innings to restrict the New Zealanders for 260/9. At one stage, it seemed the hosts would've surpassed the 280-run mark.

With the bat, India need to buckle up. In their opening game, they were 114-6 before Sneh Rana-Pooja Vastrakar bailed them out. In the game versus the Kiwis, India were never in the hunt in pursuit of 261 as their timid approach with the bat was heavily criticised and remains a big concern going forward. The likes of Smriti Mandhana, Mithali, Shefali Verman, Yastika Bhatia, Deepti Sharma, etc. need to up the ante to not add pressure towards the end of the innings.

IND vs WI prediction: Who will win WWC 2022 match between India and West Indies?

Ishan Kishan and Rishabh Pant are not only two swashbuckling batters for Team India but the duo also are capable wicketkeepers. Kishan and Pant go a long way back. The former was Pant's captain in the 2016 U-19 World Cup, in Bangladesh.

The two cricketers were part of India's top-order in the U-19 showpiece event. While Pant now bats down the order for the national side, switching roles from a middle-order batter to a finisher, Ishan remains a top-order batter -- for India and his IPL franchise Mumbai Indians (MI). As both players have similar skillsets, people often brand them as rivals. However, Kishan played down all such claims and feels there is no thought of competition between the two.

I speak my mind with him, and he does the same. Never once has it crossed my mind that I want his place and I can assure you, that’s been the case with him too. And most importantly, when we are in the middle of our cricket routines, we don’t even think we’re competing with each other."

Rohit Sharma's Team India beat West Indies in the third and final T20I at Eden Gardens, Kolkata on Sunday evening (February 20). Being asked to bat first, Rohit & Co. rode on Suryakumar Yadav's 65 and Venkatesh Iyer's 19-ball 35* to post 184-5. In reply, the Kieron Pollard-led visitors were restricted 167-9 to whitewash the series courtesy a 17-run win.

Throughout the course of the series, the 34-year-old Rohit made heads turn for his decision-making, rotating the bowlers and being a step ahead of the opposition on the field. Thus, veteran keeper-batter Dinesh Karthik lauded Hitman but also mentioned where he will be tested as captain. For the unversed, Rohit is now India's full-time captain after being named as Virat Kohli's successor in whites, after taking over in limited-overs, on Saturday (February 19).

"I think Rohit is very astute tactically. And the amount of cricket he will play will define how consistently he can play all three formats. When it comes to tactics, we saw in this game (third T20I against West Indies) that he is well ahead of the game," Karthik told Cricbuzz.

There were a lot of positives for Team India throughout the white-ball series versus West Indies. The likes of Harshal Patel, Deepak Chahar, SKY, Shreyas Iyer, Ravi Bishnoi, Venky Iyer, etc. did well and made heads turn with their impressive returns. Ishan Kishan, on the other hand, also got starts in the T20I leg but his strike-rate remained below par.

He returned with scores of 35 (42), 2 (10) and 34 (31) in three innings. Kishan, who ended as the most-expensive player at IPL 2022 auction -- bought back by Mumbai Indians (MI) for INR 152.5 million -- struggled to hit the right chord despite getting starts in the series.

He batted well versus WI but strike rate is questionable: Aakash Chopra on Team India's star player

Rohit Sharma's Team India beat West Indies by 17 runs to win the third and final T20I and inflict a whitewash over the hapless visitors. On Sunday evening (February 20), Rohit-led Indian team posted a daunting 184-5 and defended the score by 17 runs, despite Nicholas Pooran's 61 and cameos from Rovman Powell and Romario Shepherd.

Speaking after Team India's 3-0 victory against the Windies in the press conference, head coach Rahul Dravid lavished huge praise on the national team. He further indicated that the team management already have a fair idea of the team combination for the 2022 T20 World Cup, in Australia. He said, "I think we have got a fair idea between Rohit and myself and the selectors and the management. I don’t think there’s a set formula to it. But we’re pretty clear about the balance and the combination (for the T20 World Cup)…We are just structuring a little bit of the team around it and also balancing individual workloads as well."

"You don’t want to cast your net too wide. We don’t also want to restrict ourselves to just 15 players. We want to give players opportunities, ensure that by the time we get to the World Cup, some of our guys have played at least 10-15-20 games. It gives Rohit a chance to play them, bowl them in positions that he wants to, but he also has to be balanced with the fact that we need to have a few back-ups of people in case of an injury," the coach further explained.

Have a fair idea of team combination for T20 World Cup, says Rahul Dravid after WI series

Rohit Sharma-led Team India beat West Indies by 17 runs to inflict a whitewash over the visitors in the just-concluded three T20Is. On Sunday evening (February 20), Rohit-led India were asked to bat first. While Ishan Kishan started off nicely, he slowed down as the innings progressed whereas Ruturaj Gaikwad and captain Rohit failed to get going.

Shreyas Iyer got a start, however, perished soon. At 91-4, Suryakumar Yadav and Venkatesh Iyer got together and had a job in hand. While it seemed 160 would have been difficult to cross, the duo put on an impressive 91-run fifth-wicket stand -- filled with strokeplay -- to take the score to 184-5 in 20 overs. SKY returned with a 31-ball 65 whereas Iyer remained unbeaten on 35* (19).

In reply, Nicholas Pooran's fifty and Romario Shepherd's cameo went in vain as the Kieron Pollard-led Windies failed to win a single game in the India tour. While the bowlers did an excellent job to finish the game, maximum credit goes to SKY-Iyer to have set it up beautifully for the home side.

Thus, Iyer reflected on the match-winning partnership with SKY and revealed how the latter's words motivated him when he came to the crease.

When I went out there, even Surya was relatively new to the crease. I still remember the first words he told me- 'Aaj ek aur opportunity hai'," Iyer said.

"So I think, when a senior player tells you that, it gives you a lot of confidence, you see pressure as a privilege. He is one of those guys who everyone likes in the dressing room, he has got great chemistry. It was wonderful batting with him, I was really enjoying his batting from the non-striker's end," he added.

Today, there is another opportunity: Venkatesh Iyer reveals motivating words from 'likeable' Suryakumar Yadav

India continued their dominant run against West Indies in the third and final T20I on Sunday as they thrashed the visitors by 17 runs at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata to complete a 3-0 whitewash in the T20I series. It was a brilliant all-round performance from Rohit Sharma & Co., who rode on Suryakumar Yadav's blistering half-century to post a strong total of 185 runs on the board before Harshal Patel's exceptional spell helped them defend it comfortably.

While India have now moved to the top spot in the ICC T20I rankings with back to back clean sweeps in their last two T20I series, captain Rohit has also managed to create a new captaincy record. With the team's 3-0 clean sweep against Kieron Pollard's men, Rohit has become the first Indian captain to lead the side to 3 or more series whitewashes in T20Is.

No Indian captain before the Hitman had managed to achieve the feat in the shortest format of the game. Rohit has led India to series clean sweeps against Sri Lanka (2017), New Zealand (2021) and West Indies (2022). He has become only the third captain in the world after Pakistan Sarfaraz Ahmed (5) and Afghanistan's Asghar Afghan (4) to win three or more T20Is series without losing a single game.

Asked to bat first, India got off to a poor start as opener Ruturaj Gaikwad failed to make an impact and was dismissed cheaply on 4 off 8 balls before Ishan Kishan (34) combined with Shreyas Iyer (25) to add 53 runs for the second wicket. Skipper Rohit, who demoted himself to no.4 in order to let Gaikwad and Kishan open the innings, also couldn't get going and was dismissed on 7 off 15 deliveries.

However, Suryakumar and Venkatesh Iyer helped India stage a brilliant comeback in the game as the duo posted a brilliant stand of 91 runs for the 5th wicket. Both Suryakumar and Venkatesh went after the West Indies bowlers and took them to the cleaners during their entertaining partnership.

While Suryakumar slammed a quickfire 65 off 31 balls laced with seven sixes and a four, Venkatesh scored 35 off 19 balls with the help of 4 fours and two sixes. It was a dominant display from the duo, who propelled India to a strong total of 184 runs.

The bowlers too didn't disappoint and bowled extremely well in the death overs to restrict West Indies on 167/9 in 20 overs. While Harshal was the pick of the bowlers for his exceptional spell of 3/22 in his 4 overs, Shardul Thakur, Deepak Chahar and Venkatesh all picked up two wickets apiece.

Rohit Sharma creates new captaincy record as India complete 3-0 whitewash aganst West Indies in T20Is

Indian seamers fired in unison after Suryakumar Yadav's belligerent fifty as the hosts coasted to a series-sweeping 17-run win over the West Indies in the third and final T20I here on Sunday. After Deepak Chahar limped off the field after failing to complete the third over due to a hamstring injury, Harshal Patel (3/22), Venkatesh Iyer (2/23 from 2.1 overs) and Shardul Thakur (2/33) performed their tasks impressively to defend India's 184/5.

Wicket-keeper batter Nicholas Pooran continued his fine form slamming a third successive fifty (61 off 47 balls; 8x4, 1x6) but it was not enough as West Indies managed just 167 for nine. For Rohit, it was his third successive clean sweep as full-time skipper, having earlier defeated New Zealand (0-3) in T20Is and West Indies (0-3) in ODIs. The win also matched their 2020 record of nine successive victories on the trot.

For the West Indies, this was their third successive bilateral series defeats away from home -- 0-2 to New Zealand in 2020-21 and 0-3 to Pakistan 2021-22 -- as they capped a forgettable India sojourn losing six matches on the trot (including three in the ODI leg).

Though debutant pacer Avesh Khan (4-0-42-0) struggled with his line, Chahar made early inroads for India early on removing both the openers -- Kayle Mayers (6) and Shai Hope (8) -- in the space of 11 deliveries inside the powerplay.

Chahar swung the ball both ways and also smartly changed his pace to deceive the Windies openers and gave the first breakthrough in the fifth ball after India reviewed it successfully to dismiss Mayers.

In his next over, he took the outside edge of Hope with a peach of an outswinger and looked on fire before he sustained an injury and limped off the field without completing his over.

In absence of Chahar, Harshal stepped it up displaying his brilliant cricketing mind as he executed his slower ones to perfection to be the wrecker-in-chief.

Earlier, Suryakumar Yadav unleashed his brute power on way to a 31-ball 65, and was well supported by all-rounder Venkatesh (35 not out off 19) as India posted a challenging 184 for five after being put in to bat.

Suryakumar smashed seven sixes and one boundary in an exceptional display of power-hitting before getting out for his career-best T20 score in the final delivery. Pace bowling all-rounder Venkatesh smashed four fours and two sixes at the other end as the duo put together 91 runs from 37 balls for the fourth wicket to help India recover from a mini middle-order collapse.

The rejigged Team India lost three wickets for 55 runs in the middle overs including that of skipper Rohit Sharma, who batted at number four, to be struggling at 98/4 in 15 overs.

Surya cruised to his fourth T20 fifty in just 27 balls with a massive inside-out six over covers off Romario Sheperd in the final over as India stepped up in style smashing 86 runs in the final five overs.

It was a new-look Indian batting order on display with Ishan Kishan opening the batting with Ruturaj Gaikwad, while Shreyas Iyer batted at No 3, and skipper Rohit dropped him down the order at No 4 in absence of Virat Kohli and Rishabh Pant who have been rested.

Having got a chance after making a debut in the Sri Lanka series in July last year, the Maharashtra 'run machine' Ruturaj impressed in his short stay at the crease and timed the ball to perfection before getting out while playing out of his comfort zone.

The most expensive buy at the IPL 2022 mega auction Ishan, who had two forgettable outings in the first two T20Is, started to fire against Shepherd with three boundaries in four balls in the fourth over.

Having put on a fifty-plus stand in just 32 balls, the duo of Shreyas and Ishan failed to convert their starts and got out in the space of seven balls.

The Windies spin duo of Hayden Walsh Junior (4-0-30-1) and Roston Chase (4-0-23-1) bowled brilliantly in the middle overs.

Suryakumar Yadav, Harshal Patel impress as India thrash West Indies by 17 runs in 3rd T20I, clinch series 3-0

Scrutiny is nothing new when it comes to sports. Athletes across the globe go through lean patches and are at times subjected to intense criticism which even the toughest one find difficult to handle. The damage from scrutiny is often swept under the rug and players are left to deal with the repercussions.

When it comes to cricket in India, praise and criticism go hand in hand. As much as the cricketers are loved by the fans of the sport that has ruled the hearts of the nation for several decades now, they receive an almost equal amount of scrutiny when their performances on the field dip.

Virat Kohli is no different. Despite being a cult hero and one of the best batters to have graced world cricket in the present era, Kohli has failed to earn leverage against unscathed criticism and personal attacks which can cause severe damage to even the mentally toughest athletes.

Kohli, who has rightfully earned the tag of a 'run machine' with his incredibly consistent performances with the willow over the years, has not enjoyed the best of form over the last couple of years. His last international century came more than a couple of years ago in November 2019 and his last few series have been below-par as per the standards he has set for himself with his stunning performances in the past.

This is not the first time Kohli has gone through a lean patch in his career and as per the batting maestro himself, he has seen the worst of it all during India's tour of England in 2014 which has left him shattered on and off the field. "I just didn't know what to do and what to say to anyone, How to speak, how to communicate," Kohli had once said recalling the England tour of 2014 - his worst so far in his career.

Eight years down the line and Kohli is a far more mature cricketer now, a fighter in his own rights and someone who hates to turn up on the field if not feeling his hundred per cent. However, his ongoing rough patch once again has pushed one of the finest cricketers of the generation to the edge.

COVID-19 has changed the way the sport used to be played and mental fatigue has become a far bigger challenge than it ever was. A number of players, including Kohli in the past, have spoken about the importance of adequate breaks while playing continuous cricket in such bubbles and how challenging it is for players to go about their business in such conditions.

On Saturday (February 19), Kohli reportedly left the Indian team's bubble in Kolkata during their ongoing T20I series against West Indies after being granted a much-needed ten-day break by the BCCI. The break couldn't have come at a better time for the former India captain.

His century drought since 2019 has led to needless scrutiny almost every time he turns up to bat in a game. However, even Kohli will admit, he has not been the prolific run-scorer that he used to be and pressure seems to have taken a toll on his performances for the Indian team.

Apart from dealing with his rough patch, the last few months have been turbulent for the former India captain, who was embroiled in a controversial saga with the Indian cricket board after being sacked from ODI captaincy in December last year. Kohli, who had himself given up T20 captaincy last year, was sacked as the captain in ODIs before he decided to quit Test captaincy as well.

While the popular belief was that being relieved of the pressure of captaining the team will help Kohli bounce back and find his lost form, there were no such signs as the former India skipper continued to struggle. While the best way to find form is to play as much as you can, sometimes a break can do wonders.

For Kohli, this crucial ten-day break couldn't have come at a better time as it will help the seasoned cricketer in pressing the refresh button after what have been an agonising few months on and off the field. Kohli will miss the 3rd T20I against West Indies followed by the three-match T20I series against Sri Lanka.

He will return from his much-needed break when India lock horns with Sri Lanka in the two-match Test series. To make his comeback in the format that he loves the most will be an ideal situation for the run-machine, who will be looking to shut down some of his critics with his bat.

Kohli has scored 760 runs in 15 Tests, 791 runs in 21 ODIs and 846 runs in 2 T20Is, averaging 28.14, 37.66 and 56.40 in the three formats respectively since his last international hundred. His form has not been as bad as it has been made out to be but when it comes to a batter of his standard and quality even good numbers look poor.

Also Read: Virat Kohli, Rishabh Pant granted bio-bubble break ahead of series finale vs WI; duo to skip SL T20Is COVID-19 has changed the way the sport used to be played and mental fatigue has become a far bigger challenge than it ever was. Also Read: Virat Kohli vs BCCI: Is there any real winner in this tussle? Break from bio-bubble a much-needed one for under-fire Virat Kohli

India survived a last-over scare from Rovman Powell to secure a thrilling 8-run win in the second T20I of the ongoing three-match series to take an unassailable lead of 2-0. India will be aiming for a 3-0 clean sweep when they lock horns with Kieron Pollard & Co. in the third and final T20I of the series at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Sunday (February 20).

If India manage to continue their stellar winning run in the third T20I on Sunday, it will be the second successive T20I series clean sweep for the hosts, who had defeated New Zealand 3-0 at home post the conclusion of the T20 World Cup 2021 last year. India have been enjoying a brilliant run under captain Rohit Sharma and will be hopeful of making it three wins in a row on Sunday.

However, the hosts are set to be without Virat Kohli and Rishabh Pant in the final encounter. Both Kohli and Pant were the heroes of India's victory in the second game as they slammed a half-century apiece to help the Men in Blue post a challenging total of 186 runs on the board. Kohli and Pant left the team's bio-bubble and have been given a ten-day break by the BCCI.

The duo will also miss the upcoming T20I series against Sri Lanka which is set to get underway from February 24. In the absence of the duo, India are likely to bring Shreyas Iyer back in the playing XI. Iyer, who is yet to feature in the ongoing T20I series, can take Kohli's no.3 spot in the batting line-up. Talented opener Ruturaj Gaikwad also might finally get a chance to break into the XI.

Gaikwad is part of the squad but is yet to get a chance in the series and he might open with captain Rohit Sharma in the 3rd T20I on Sunday. Ishan Kishan, who has had average outings as an opener in the first two games, might be asked to take Pant's spot in the middle-order and keep wickets in his absence.

All-rounder Deepak Hooda might also make his T20I debut in case India want to add another all-rounder in the XI to have extra batting and bowling depth in the final game of the series. Hooda, who impressed in the ODI series against the West Indies, is yet to play his first T20I for India.

India's predicted playing XI for 3rd T20I against West Indies:

Rohit Sharma (c), Ruturaj Gaikwad, Shreyas Iyer, Ishan Kishan (wk), Suryakumar Yadav, Venkatesh Iyer, Deepak Chahar, Harshal Patel, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Yuzvendra Chahal, Ravi Bishnoi

Ruturaj Gaikwad, Shreyas Iyer to feature? India's predicted playing XI for 3rd T20I against West Indies

Team India won the second and penultimate T20I versus West Indies in a thrilling contest, held on Friday evening (February 18) at Eden Gardens, Kolkata. Being asked to bat first, India posted 186-5 and defended the score by 8 runs despite Nicholas Pooran-Rovman Powell's pyrotechnics.

There were a lot of positives for the Rohit Sharma-led Indian team. One of the biggest shining points was the return of Virat Kohli's form. While Kohli had two fifty-plus scores in the South Africa ODIs, he fell flat versus the Kieron Pollard-led Men in Maroon in the 50-over series. The former Indian captain got a start but fell for 17 in the series opener before turning the tide emphatically with a blistering 41-ball 52 on Friday evening. The 33-year-old Kohli started off aggressively and while he did get a tad bit slow as his innings progressed, he got to his fifty with a six.

On the very next delivery, he was cleaned up by Roston Chase as Kohli walked back for 52. With another half-century in the shortest format, Kohli has joined Rohit at the top with most fifties in T20Is.

India vs WI: Virat Kohli joins Rohit Sharma at the top in elite list with blistering 52 in 2nd T20I

Ahead of the three-match T20I series versus West Indies, India's white-ball captain Rohit Sharma shunned reporters for adding too much hype regarding Virat Kohli's indifferent form. For the unversed, the 33-year-old ended with only 26 runs in the three ODIs versus Kieron Pollard-led Windies. Thus, talks have intensified on Kohli's form as the 33-year-old remains without a century since late 2019.

“It starts from you guys (media). If you guys keep quiet for a while, he'll be alright. If you don't do much talking from your side, everything will be taken care of," Rohit had said in the pre-match presser ahead of the first T20I against the Men in Maroon in Kolkata.

Reacting to Rohit's backing of his predecessor Kohli, former India player Nikhil Chopra feels Hitman's statement sends a strong message to the Indian dressing room. “I had said earlier as well that Rohit is the right candidate for captaincy because he has earned the respect of the dressing room. Everyone knows that the captain will back them even if they are not able to perform a specific role given to them. Players know the captain will never humiliate them publicly and keep backing them completely," Chopra said on the Khelneeti podcast.

Reflecting on Kohli's run of form, Chopra pointed out that the empty stands are also playing a role in the former captain's century drought. “I am not saying that it is happening with Kohli. But when a player receives appreciation for hitting fours and sixes, he feeds off that energy. In empty stadiums, your concentration might be affected as there is no reaction to big hits. We know a lot of players who take strength from crowd’s energy. Maybe, it might be affecting him a little bit," the ex-cricketer further pointed out.

Rohit Sharma-led Team India beat West Indies in the second and penultimate T20I by 8 runs to clinch the series with a game to go. On Friday evening (February 18), the Men in Blue locked horns with Kieron Pollard-led West Indies at the Eden Gardens, Kolkata and put on another good show to claim the three-match series.

Being asked to bat first, Rohit & Co. rode on half-centuries from Virat Kohli and Rishabh Pant to post 186-5. In reply, West Indies were kept in the run-chase courtesy a century-stand from half-centurions Nicholas Pooran and Rovman Powell before some tight bowling in the end overs turned the tide in India's favour.

At the post-match presentation, captain Rohit was a relaxed man after an intense encounter at his happy hunting ground. Nonetheless, he gave a hilarious reaction after knowing that Pant was adjudged the Player-of-the-Match in the high-voltage encounter.

At the post-match presentation, Pant pointed out, "As long as the team wants me to bat anywhere, I am fine. I think inside the circle, everyone was looking for that catch (Powell) to be taken and we thought it was Bhuvi's catch but it happens and it's part and parcel of the game. Having defeated West Indies 3-0 in the ODI series, Team India will look to replicate the same when the two sides meet in the third and final T20I on Sunday.

India defeated West Indies in the second T20I on Friday on the back of Virat Kohli and Rishabh Pant's fifties.

However, Team India will be missing the services of Kohli and Pant as both have been given bio-bubble break by the BCCI.

While India will eye for a clean sweep, the hosts will also try different combinations in the absence of Kohli and Pant.

On the other hand, West Indies will look to end the tour of India on a high by winning the third and final T20I on Sunday.

The visitors have not won a single game and will definitely look to seal the dead rubber to open the account in the white-ball leg.

Coming back to Team India, after the win in the second ODI, Pant said young batter Venkatesh Iyer is a mature cricketer, who reads the situation very well.

Pant (52) and Venkatesh Iyer (33) had played crucial knocks to help India post 186/5 in the 20 overs in the second T20I.

"When you come down the order, you know the situation. He (Iyer) is someone who reads the situation really well. We talked about keeping it simple and not trying too many things. The plan was simple, see the ball, hit the ball," said Pant in the post-match press conference.

"He (Iyer) is a mature cricketer. He used to play down the order for MP. Yes, in the IPL he is opening, but we can't be thinking too much about that. In the Indian team, we are just trying to find different positions for different people," he added.

3rd T20I: West Indies look to end tour on winning note as India eyes series whitewash

India and West Indies played out a humdinger of a clash in the second and penultimate T20I on Friday evening (February 18), at Eden Gardens, Kolkata. Being asked to bat first, Rohit-led Indian team posted a challenging 186-5, riding on half-centuries from Virat Kohli, Rishabh Pant and Venkatesh Iyer's quickire 33.

In reply, WI were 59 for 2 but were kept in the run-chase courtesy Rovman Powell and Nicholas Pooran's century-stand. The two's third-wicket stand kept Indian team on their toes in defence of 187. During the 16th over, when the chase was wide open and the Windies' batters were going hard, Bhuvneshwar Kumar was brought back into the attack in a bid to break the partnership.

Bhuvi used the short ball to good effect, pitching it outside off stump, as a well-set Powell went hard at it. He didn't get the desired timing as the ball went high up in the air. The pacer reacted late to the catch as he thought wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant was going for it. Thus, in the mixup, he dropped it and captain Rohit showed his frustration by kicking the ball. As a result, the two batters sneaked in another run, due to Rohit's kicking, to rub salt on the wounds of the home side.

2nd T20I: Rohit Sharma loses his cool as pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar drops a catch - WATCH

Team India were clinical in the first T20I of the three-match series versus Kieron Pollard-led West Indies. Opting to bowl first, the Rohit Sharma-led side restricted Windies for 157/7 and chased down the score with seven balls and 6 wickets to spare on Wednesday (February 16).

During the course of the game, India had some injury concerns. Deepak Chahar got injured while fielding. On the other hand, all-rounder Iyer also incurred a blow on his thumb. While nothing has been confirmed regarding the duo's availability, Shardul Thakur and Avesh Khan or Mohammad Siraj could be drafted into the playing XI in place of Iyer and Chahar, respectively.

India can also bring in Shreyas Iyer or Ruturaj Gaikwad for the KKR opener Venkatesh. However, they might not risk being a bowler short versus a dented WI batting line-up. Hence, Shardul is very likely to replace Iyer if the latter sits out. Rest of the line-up is expected to be unchanged.

Kohli, Pant and Bhuvneshwar star as India beat West Indies by 8 runs in 2nd T20I, clinch series

During the first ODI between India and West Indies, former Team India skipper Virat Kohli had convinced his successor Rohit Sharma to take a review which led to Shamarh Brooks' dismissal, in Ahmedabad. A similar such incident took place during the three-match T20I series opener between both sides on Wednesday (February 16), at Eden Gardens, Kolkata.

Opting to bowl first, Rohit & Co. had started well to claim two wickets in the WI innings. During debutant leg spinner Ravi Bishnoi's maiden over, India went ahead and took a Decision Review System (DRS) in a bid to claim Roston Chase's wicket. India vs WI, 1st T20I: 'I’m saying it' - How Virat Kohli convinced skipper Rohit Sharma to take DRS - Watch

India and West Indies will lock horns with each other in the second and penultimate T20I on Friday evening (February 18). Rohit Sharma-led India will aim for an unassailable lead in the three-match series after claiming the first game by six wickets.

Opting to bowl first, Rohit-led India restricted the Kieron Pollard-led West Indies line-up for a moderate 157/7. Debutant leg spinner Ravi Bishnoi and Harshal Patel claimed two wickets each to dent WI's innings and curtail the run-flow. In reply, Rohit's 19-ball 40 and unbeaten innings from Suryakumar Yadav and Venkatesh Iyer took India home with seven balls to spare.

Thus, the West Indies team remain winless in the tour and will press hard for a comeback to keep the series alive. On the other hand, it will be interesting to see if India go unchanged into the encounter or will they try bring in some new faces for Friday evening's clash.

The IPL 2022 mega auction was a successful two-day event, held in Bengaluru on February 12 and 13. After the end of the mega auction, Ishan Kishan finished as the most expensive player; being bought back by the Mumbai Indians (MI) franchise for a whopping INR 152.5 million (INR 15.25 crore).

Ishan wasn't retained by the Rohit Sharma-led MI franchise ahead of the mega auction. However, his rise in stature and wide range of shots ensured that he was re-acquired by the five-time champions MI in the mega auction. Ahead of the India-West Indies T20I series, on Wednesday (February 16), the 23-year-old Ishan revealed the advice he got from head coach Rahul Dravid post the auction proceedings.

“It’s [auction] done. Had a good chat with Rahul sir also. [He] asked us to just focus on what we are doing right now. Obviously, IPL is a big platform for everyone, and people get happy when they go to good teams. But the focus is on this series,” Kishan told the host broadcaster before the T20I encounter on Wednesday.

“I’m the happiest when I open the innings, but looking at the situation and what the team asks me to do, I’m okay with my role and comfortable batting anywhere. It’s a big six-hitting ground (Eden Gardens, Kolkata) but that’s my strength, I can clear any ground on any day. I have to go there and watch the ball, be clear about what my role is and what the team needs me to do," the 23-year old further highlighted.

Ravi Bishnoi impressed one and all on his debut as he registered figures of 2-17, and he would look to go on with his form.
