India and West Indies were involved in a closely-fought three-match ODI series, in the Caribbean island, in which a second-stringed Indian team -- under Shikhar Dhawan -- won 3-0. While the first two ODIs were a thriller, India won the rain-interrupted third and final match by 119 runs (DLS method).

Now, the action moves to the T20Is as both sides will now shift focus back to the shortest format with the 2022 T20 World Cup set to be held in Australia, from October-November. The five-match series opener will be held on Friday (July 29) at the Brian Lara Stadium, Tarouba, Trinidad. Even the ODIs were held in Trinidad, at the Queen's Park Oval, Port-of-Spain. Hence, will rain once again make its presence felt and interrupt the proceedings?

For the unversed, the weather forecast in Tarouba, Trinidad for Friday is far better than what it was a couple of days back, i.e. on Wednesday (July 27). However, there still remains a 25 percent chance of precipitation during the daytime. As the proceedings will kick off at 10:30 am local time, there is expected to be a cloud cover of 31 percent. However, no humidity indicates a pleasant day on the Caribbean island.

The temperatures will hover around a high of 32 degrees with a low of 26 degrees. Thus, it is going to be a hot day largely with some passing showers leading to few interruptions. Overall, a full game is on the cards.

After losing the ODIs, Nicholas Pooran-led West Indies will certainly look to settle scores with India and claim the five T20Is. For that, they will be eager to start off nicely against the visitors, who recently beat England (2-1) in their own backyard.

West Indies vs India, 1st T20I: How will the weather hold up for series opener at Trinidad?

India and West Indies will now shift focus to the T20Is as both sides meet each other in the five-match series opener on Friday (July 29) in Trinidad. After whitewashing the Windies in the three ODIs, India will now see the return of their regulars such as captain Rohit Sharma, Rishabh Pant, Hardik Pandya, etc. as they start as favourites versus the inconsistent Windies.

However, it isn't an unknown fact that the shortest form of the game is West Indies' most preferred format, comprising several power-hitters. Thus, they will like to move past their ODI struggles and give a tough fight to Men in Blue, who are coming into this series on the back of a 2-1 series win over hosts England, early this month.

WI vs IND: When and where to watch West Indies vs India 1st T20I match - IST time and streaming details

Top bowling spells from spinner Yuzvendra Chahal and pacers Mohammed Siraj and Shardul Thakur helped India crush West Indies by 119 runs in the rain-hit third and final ODI of the series here at Queen`s Park Oval on Thursday. India has completed a clean sweep of 3-0 over the hosts. India can walk away with a lot of positives after this match as their batting was great, lead from the front by openers Shikhar Dhawan (58) and Shubman Gill (98*).

Setting a target of 257 in 35 overs after the match was hit by rain, Windies batters never looked as if they were in the game as Indian bowlers feasted on them. The hosts fell prey to a world-class bowling attack with their careless shot selection. Chahal (4/17), Siraj (2/14) and Thakur (2/17) were extremely economic with the ball and delivered timely blows to their opponent.

Chasing 257, West Indies got off a nightmarish start, losing opener Kyle Mayers and Shamarh Brooks in the second over to pacer Mohammed Siraj. Following this, opener Shai Hope and Brandon King resumed the chase for the hosts. They both maintained solid running between the wickets. King was the aggressor during the partnership. Hope-King added 47 runs to their stand before the former was stumped by wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson for 22 off 33 balls on a delivery by spinner Yuzvendra Chahal. At the end of 10 overs, West Indies was 48/3, with King (24*) and Pooran (1*). Captain Nicholas Pooran was next up on crease. The 12th over was bowled by pacer Prasidh Krishna and it turned out to be expensive, with Pooran-King smashing four boundaries in it collectively. It was spinner Axar Patel who gave India their fourth wicket, removing King, who was looking threatening. He had scored 42 off 37 balls before he was trapped leg before wicket by the bowler.

Keacy Carty was next up on the crease. Pooran`s game became more attacking, smashing Deepak Hooda for a four and a six and Axar for a four as well. The duo took the hosts to the 100-run mark at end of 18 overs, with Pooran being the aggressor. Shardul Thakur broke the 29-run stand between the duo, bowling out Carty for just five runs off 17 balls. At this point, half of Windies line up was back in the hut at 103. Jason Holder was the next batter to arrive on the crease. The all-rounder was making his return to white-ball cricket after a while and had a task in hand to build a solid stand with his skipper. Prasidh finally got his first wicket of the day, dismissing the danger man Pooran for 42 off 32 balls after being caught by Dhawan at mid-on. Thakur gave another jolt to the hosts, sending back Akael Hosein for just one run after skipper Dhawan took another great catch.

There was not much batting left with the Windies except for Holder, who needed to pull off something really great to guide his team to a consolation win. Things continued to go downhill for Windies, with Paul dismissed for a duck by Chahal after he was caught by Thakur at point while attempting to reverse sweep. Holder was running out of partners at this point, now joined by Hayden Walsh. Walsh was the ninth wicket down at a score of 137 after being caught by Dhawan at slips. Jayden Seales was the last player dismissed, sent back to pavilion by Chahal. Windies were bundled out for 137. They had lost the match by 119 runs and India had completed a 3-0 clean sweep in the series. Chahal finished as the leading bowler for India with 4/17. Siraj and Thakur also took two wickets. Krishna and Axar got one scalp each.

Earlier, a 113-run stand between Shubman Gill and Shikhar Dhawan powered India to 225/3 in 36 overs during the rain-hit third and final ODI against West Indies here at Queens Park Oval on Wednesday. As per Duckworth-Lewis Method, West Indies were set a target of 257 runs in 35 overs. The innings face disruption due to rain. But despite this disruption, India managed to put up a solid total on the board. Dhawan (58) and Gill (98*) continued their fine batting form and Windies bowlers were not able to do much. Shreyas Iyer also contributed a fine 44.

Electing to bat first, India was cautious for the first ten overs, mostly rotating the strike and hitting big occasionally. This cautious approach bore fruit as openers Shikhar Dhawan and Shubman Gill were able to get through the mandatory powerplay with a score of 45/0, with the duo standing unbeaten at 22 each. After reaching their 50-run stand in 67 balls, the duo accelerated their run-making. Skipper Dhawan brought up his 37th fifty in ODIs. Dhawan-Gill brought up their 100-run stand in 118 balls.

Gill was also looking really classy with the bat at the other end and brought up his second ODI fifty, continuing his good run in the series. The 113-run stand between the duo was broken in 23rd over. It was spinner Hayden Walsh who gave Windies a breakthrough by dismissing Dhawan for 58 off 74 balls, with skipper Nicholas Pooran taking the catch at mid-wicket. Shreyas Iyer was next up on crease. Rain interrupted play at this point, with India at 115/1 in 24 overs, with Gill (51*) and Iyer (2*). The match resumed as a 40-over-a-side contest. After this, Gill-Iyer started showing more attacking intent with the willow, smashing boundaries and sixes.

The very first over after rain went for 18 runs. The duo raced to their 50-run partnership in just 30 balls. West Indies bowlers were shocked by the sudden change in gears and it was reflected in some sloppy fielding by them.

The duo kept the scoreboard moving and added 86 runs before Shreyas Iyer was dismissed for a solid 44 off 34 balls by spinner Akeal Hosein after being caught by Keemo Paul at long-on. Suryakumar Yadav was the next man on the crease for India. However, his poor run of scores continued as he was dismissed by Walsh after being caught for just eight runs at backward point by Shamarh Brooks.

Sanju Samson, the wicketkeeper-batter was next up on the crease. Gill-Samson carried on for a while before rain interrupted play once again. India`s innings came to an end at 225/3 in 36 overs due to rain, with Gill (98*) and Samson (6*) unbeaten.

Brief Scores: India: 225/3 in 36 overs (Shubman Gill 98, Shikhar Dhawan 58, Hayden Walsh 2/57) win against West Indies: 137 in 26 overs (Brandon King 42, Nicholas Pooran 42, Yuzvendra Chahal 4/17) by 119 runs.

3rd ODI: India hammer West Indies by 119 runs to register clean sweep in Trinidad

Shikhar Dhawan-led India whitewashed Nicholas Pooran's West Indies in the three-match ODI series finale, on Wednesday (July 27) at Port-of-Spain, Trinidad. In a rain-curtailed game, India were right on the money and walked past the Windies by a mammoth 119-run margin to inflict a clean sweep over the hosts.

Thus, Dhawan & Co. created history as the second-stringed side led India to its maiden ODI series whitewash over West Indies away from home. Talking about the contest, India opted to bat first and rode on Dhawan's 58, Shubman Gill's 98 not out and Shreyas Iyer's 34-ball 44 to post 225-3 in 36 overs. The revised target for West Indies was a challenging one, being asked to chase 257 in 35 overs. In reply, the home side were never in the hunt and got dismissed for a paltry 137 in 26 overs with Yuzvendra Chahal (4 for 17), Shardul Thakur and Md Siraj -- with both pacers returning with two scalps each -- shining with the ball.

WATCH: Dhawan leads India's celebrations after Dravid's winning speech as Men in Blue whitewash WI in ODIs

India have already pocketed the ongoing three-match ODI series against West Indies 2-0 with back-to-back wins in the first two matches at the Queen's Park Oval in Trinidad. In the absence of a number of first-team players, Shikhar Dhawan has been leading the side against the hosts and a number of youngsters have stepped up to impress in the first two matches for the Men in Blue.

One of the youngsters who have impressed the most for Team India recently is all-rounder Deepak Hooda, who has continued his fine form in the ongoing ODI series against West Indies. Hooda has turned out to be a revelation for the Men in Blue this year and has grown in stature since making his international debut earlier this year.

Hooda made his debut for India against West Indies in February this year and has since notched several impressive performances with the bat to become a strong contender for selection in India's squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup 2022. Hooda had recently become only the fifth Indian batter to slam a T20I century against Ireland.

He has so far played 4 ODIs and 6 T20Is for India, amassing 115 and 205 runs in the two formats respectively. Lauding him for his recent heroics, former India wicket-keeper Saba Karim called Hooda the biggest match-winner for India in white-ball cricket at present. Karim believes Hooda can win matches for India with both the bat and the ball.

"For me, Deepak Hooda is currently the biggest match-winner in the Indian white-ball team. He is turning out to be an incredible addition to the team and believes that he can contribute as an all-rounder. He is bowling with the same confidence as he did in the IPL and is keen on getting better," Karim said on India News.

He has continued his purple patch for Team India following the conclusion of the IPL and has given the selectors a major headache ahead of the T20 World Cup 2022. Not Rohit or Kohli! Former wicket-keeper names India's biggest match-winner in white-ball cricket currently

Shikhar Dhawan-led India have locked horns with West Indies in the third and final ODI in Trinidad, on Wednesday (July 27). After taking an unassailable lead in the closely-fought series, Dhawan & Co. stand a chance to create history by achieveing India's maiden ODI series whitewash over the Windies in the Caribbean island.

Hence, many thought Ravindra Jadeja -- India's star all-rounder who was named Dhawan's deputy for the series -- would appear in the visitors' playing XI. Jadeja was ruled out of the first two games after sustaining an injury to his right knee. While there was an outside chance for him to play the series finale, the star all-rounder wasn't available for selection as he is still not a 100 percent and continues to be on recovery mode.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed, on Wednesday, that the medical team will continue to monitor Jaddu's progress. In his absence, India have been right on the money and taken a 2-0 lead. Jadeja's like-for-like replacement Axar Patel was the Player-of-the-Match in the second and penultimate tie, smashing an impressive 34-ball 65 not out in India's 312-run chase along with also claiming a wicket.

At the coin toss, Dhawan opted to bat first and told the broadcasters, "We will bat first. We will like to post a good score. The best thing is everything is performing, nice to see that. That's a big positive for us, happy with that. I feel that intent is important, but at the same time you need to be smart. Dravid is doing a good job, the more the players will play, the better they will get. We got one change. Prasidh comes in for Avesh Khan."

The ODIs will be followed by a five-match T20I series and Jadeja is expected to return to action by then. Rohit Sharma, Rishabh Pant, Hardik Pandya, R Ashwin, Kuldeep Yadav and Bhuvneshwar Kumar will join the side after being rested for the 50-over assignment.

WI vs IND: When and where to watch West Indies vs India 3rd ODI match - IST time and streaming details

Shkhar Dhawan-led India have been phenomenal in the opening two ODIs versus hosts West Indies. While the series has been a closely-fought one so far, the second-stringed Indian team has remained calm and composed in crunch situations to edge past West Indies in the first two games.

As a result, India have an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match ODI series. Ahead of the third and final ODI, India are on the brink of a historic feat. The Asian giants have been involved in bilateral ODI series with the Windies over the years. While the Men In Blue have won several series against the Men in Maroon, they have never managed to whitewash West Indies in an ODI series that features three or more matches away from home. In their 2019 tour, they won all games but the first ODI was washed out without a ball being bowled.

Thus, India can attain a huge feat with their maiden ODI series whitewash over WI away from home, 13t 50-over series clean sweep overall. So far, India have attained series wins over Zimbabwe in 2013, 2015, and 2016 and against Sri Lanka, in the latter half of 2017.

After India's two-wicket win over WI in the second ODI, a jubilant stand-in captain Dhawan had said at the post-match presentation, "It was a great team performance. Boys didn't lose the self-belief, that is amazing. Iyer, Sanju, Axar everyone was amazing, Even Avesh came out in his debut game and scored those 11 important runs. Thanks to IPL, they perform on a huge stage. I felt that we bowled nicely. They got off to a good start. Hope and Pooran batted well. We thought if they could do it, we knew that we could do it. We started a little slow. Shubman batted well. The Iyer-Samson partnership made a huge difference. There was a run-out. But these things happen. Boys are learning. Thanks to the support staff as well. They have been doing a tremendous job."

Dhawan & Co. will, thus, be desperate to complete a series whitewash over the home side on Wednesday (July 27), in Trinidad.

“I want to also see Natarajan playing for India again. He can make an impact just like he did in Australia. He is a fantastic bowler, but India has currently got an incredible bowling lot. Team management has to decide how to utilize its bowlers,” Kaneria further added.

'Fantastic option': Former Pakistan cricketer backs young Indian player for T20 WC & Asia Cup squads

Shubman Gill has been in terrific form so far in the ongoing ODI series between India and West Indies. Gill got a chance to open the batting with stand-in skipper Shikhar Dhawan against West Indies after a number of senior players were rested for the ODI series and he has so far made the most of his opportunities with brilliant knocks in the first two matches.

After playing an exceptional knock of 64 runs in the series-opener at the Queen's Park Oval in Trinidad, Gill continued his fine form in the second ODI against the hosts. He scored a fine 43 off 49 balls in India's 312-run chase but ended up missing a well-deserved half-century by a whisker.

Gill looked in great touch in the second ODI and slammed five fours en route to his 43 off 49 balls before he was caught and bowled by Kyle Mayers. Former Pakistan captain Salman Butt criticised Gill for giving away his wicket regularly despite being set out in the middle. Butt suggested that Gill should look to bat deep and convert his starts into big scores as he is a very talented batter.

"Shubman Gill played well but he is losing his wicket even after getting set. It's happening continuously. He is such a good player I think that he needs to carry on, he needs to score big because he has got a lot of talent," Butt said in a video on his YouTube Channel.

Talking about the game, Indian bowlers were taken to the cleaner by West Indies batters after the hosts won the toss and decided to bat first in the game. Playing his 100th ODI for West Indies, Shai Hope slammed a brilliant century while captain Nicholas Pooran scored 74 off 77 balls to help the hosts post a strong total of 311 runs on the board.

In reply, India found themselves in trouble at 79/3 in the 18th over after losing their top-order cheaply. However, half-centurions Shreyas Iyer (63) and Sanju Samson (54) combined to steady the ship for the Men in Blue with a 99-run stand for the 4th wicket. India surpass Pakistan to create world record for most consecutive bilateral ODI series wins against a team

Former Pakistan spinner Danish Kaneria has lauded Team India's youngsters after the Men in Blue's two-wicket win over West Indies in the second and penultimate ODI, held on Sunday (July 24) in Trinidad. With another win on the trot, India have also taken an unassailable 2-0 lead over the Nichoas Pooran-led hosts and will now aim for a series whitewash in the final ODI, on Wednesday (July 27).

Talking about the likes of Shreyas Iyer (63), Sanju Samson (54), Player-of-the-Match Axar Patel, etc., Kaneria lavished huge praise on the Rahul Dravid-coached Indian team's younger brigade and termed them 'serious match-winners'. India were in a tricky position in pursuit of 312 versus the Windies, being 79/3 and then in a tight spot at 256/6, but half-centurions Sanju, Iyer and Axar's late blitz (64 not out off 35 balls) took the visitors past the finish line.

Be it an A, B or C team, when you go overseas, conditions are against you. Hats off to the young team. Shikhar Dhawan’s captaincy has been admirable. Axar (who had also claimed a wicket in the match) was up for the challenge and his career-best 64-run unbeaten knock stunned the Nicholas Pooran-led West Indies as India chased down the target in the last over, with two balls to spare, by two wickets. I was playing an ODI after close to 5 years. I would want to continue performing like this for my team." Axar-starrer India have now clinched the three-match ODI series with the final match to be held on Tuesday (July 27). After the ODIs, the action will move to the five T20Is (starting on July 29) with Rohit Sharma set to return and take charge of the side.

Watch: Shikhar Dhawan & Co.'s animated celebrations as Team India clinch ODI series vs West Indies

Indian batter Shreyas Iyer continued his purple patch with the willow in the second ODI against West Indies at the Queen's Park Oval in Trinidad on Sunday (July 24). Iyer slammed a brilliant knock of 63 runs off 71 balls to help India beat West Indies by two wickets in the second ODI and clinch the three-match series with an unassailable lead of 2-0.

Ahead of the start of the ODI series against West Indies, there were questions raised over Iyer's spot in India's white-ball squad and his glaring weakness against short balls. However, he has managed to spark a turnaround in the ongoing ODI series against West Indies with back-to-back fifties in the first two matches.

After scoring 54 off 57 balls in the series-opener against West Indies at the same venue, Iyer followed it up with a brilliant 63-run-knock under pressure in the second ODI. He came out to bat at number three and steered India out of trouble when the visitors were reeling at 79/3 inside 18 overs in the 312-run chase.

Iyer combined with Sanju Samson (54) to add 99 runs for the fourth wicket and take India closer to victory. Axar Patel then took India over the line in the final over with a cracking unbeaten 64 off 35 balls. With the win, India sealed the series and recorded their 12th straight ODI series win against West Indies.

Former India batter Aakash Chopra heaped praise on Iyer after his terrific knock in the second ODI and said the star batter is steadily becoming a giant in the ODI format. Chopra believes despite his shortcomings against the short balls, Iyer's contributions to India in ODIs can't be undermined.

"The short-ball problem, T20s and Test matches, let's not talk about that. He has been ruling the roost in this format. I remember his Hamilton ton as well. He is also asking the question that once everyone is available, how will you keep him out," he added.

He is becoming a giant in ODIs: Former India batter lauds Shreyas Iyer after his terrific knock vs West Indies

Axar Patel smashed a whirlwind unbeaten 35-ball 64, his maiden ODI fifty, as India scripted a sensational series-clinching two-wicket win over the West Indies in the second game here. Set a stiff target of 312, the visitors were down to 205 for five in 38.4 overs but Patel revived India's chase with his six-hitting prowess to take the visitors home with two balls to spare on Sunday.

Needing six off the last three balls, Patel clobbered Kyle Mayers straight over the bowlers head for a six as India took an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series. Patel smashed five sixes and three fours in his unconquered innings and added 51 off 33 balls with Deepak Hooda (33) to keep India in the hunt.

This was after Shreyas Iyer (63) and Sanju Samson (54) tried to take the chase deep with well-paced fifties. Earlier, opting to bat, Shai Hope produced a masterclass 135-ball 117, while skipper Nicholas Pooran showed his big-hitting prowess with six maximums and one four during his 74 off 77 balls as West Indies posted an impressive 311 for six.

In reply, Shubman Gill (43) looked in good touch as he hit five boundaries during his 49-ball innings to give India a decent start but captain Shikhar Dhawan (13) found the going tough at the other end. The India skipper was the first to depart with Mayers producing a stunning catch at third man off the bowling of Romario Shepherd.

Mayers then pegged India back with two quick wickets, first getting rid off a well-set Gill and then removing Suryakumar Yadav (9), who once again dragged one to his stumps. Iyer and Samson tried to take the chase deep with a 99-run partnership off 94 balls but once both departed, India still needed 105 runs from 11 overs.

It was all Patel show after that as he kept fighting despite losing Hooda and Shardul Thakur. Earlier, Hope played the role of an anchor to perfection as he added 65 runs with opener Mayers (39), before forging another 62-run stand with Shamarh Brooks (35).

Hope then found his perfect ally in skipper Pooran as the two shared a 117-run stand. Hope, who was dismissed cheaply in first ODI, hit eight fours and three maximums in his 135-ball 115-run knock.

For India, spin duo of Patel (1/40) and Hooda (1/42) were economical but Yuzvendra Chahal (1/69) was expensive as he was smashed for six sixes and two fours. Mohammed Siraj (0/47) bowled well but Avesh Khan (0/54 in 6 overs) had a forgettable ODI debut, while Thakur (3/54) made amends in the end with three wickets.

Hope looked in full flow as he played some exquisite shots on the off side before reaching the three-figure mark in his 100th ODI game with a six in the 45th over. Earlier, Mayers tore apart debutant Avesh, slamming him for successive boundaries in the fourth and sixth overs as the Indian pacer, guilty of bowling too full and short, ended up conceding 36 in his first three overs.

Thakur was not spared either as Mayers sent his first two balls for a four and a six, but Siraj kept things tight in his opening spell. Hooda produced the first breakthrough with Mayers hitting his first delivery straight back to the bowler.

Brooks and Hopes then looked to build a partnership with Hooda and Patel bowling in tandem as just 42 runs came from the 11th to 20th over.

Chahal was introduced late into the attack and was taken to the cleaners in the 21st over with Hope and Brooks smashing a six and a four. But Dhawan brought back Patel and he produced a wicket-maiden to get rid off Brooks with the Indian skipper taking a low catch.

Chahal dealt another blow with Brandon King miscuing his slog sweep as WI slipped to 130 for three.
Pooran took his time initially and then used his feet against the spinners, especially Chahal, to produce some big shots.

Hope too picked up three boundaries and also slog-swept Chahal for a six to reach his fifty. The 200 was up in 38th overs with Pooran unleashing two maximums. The West Indies skipper exploded in the 39th over with two sixes off Chahal on both sides of the ground to bring up his fifty.

Pooran, down on one-knee, also clobbered Patel for another six before sending Avesh over the ropes for his sixth maximum but Thakur bowled him around his legs to produce a crucial breakthrough.

Hope then unleashed two sixes in two balls off Chahal en route his century, while Rovman Powell (13) and Romario Shepherd (14) played some lusty blows to take the hosts across the 300-mark.

India aim for world record with 12th consecutive ODI series win against West Indies

Following the thrilling three-run win over West Indies in the first ODI, Indian spinner Yuzvendra Chahal said that the team had confidence that Mohammed Siraj would be able to defend 15 runs in the final over. Brilliant half-centuries from Kyle Mayers and Brandon King went in vain as West Indies succumbed to a painful three-run defeat to India in the first ODI of three-match series here at Queen`s Park Oval in Trinidad on Friday.

"We had confidence and belief that Siraj could defend 15 runs in the final over because of the way he was bowling his yorkers. In his previous two overs as well, he had missed hardly one or two yorkers. There was confidence, but also pressure because of the way they (West Indies) were batting. When Sanju Samson made that save on the wide ball, it raised our confidence," said Chahal in the post-match press conference.

About his bowling plan in the match, Chahal said that he always backs his strengths. "I knew that the ball was getting old and you can beat the batter by turning it. I was changing my line and bowling wider because the leg side boundary was small. I wanted them to hit me over the covers," he added.

On his role as a senior spinner, who bowls crucial final overs for his side, the spinner said that he performed this role during the Indian Premier League 2022 where he got to bowl a lot in death overs.

"I got a lot of confidence through that. I bowl two overs after the 40-over mark. My role is clear to me. I practice in the nets accordingly and discuss my plans with the coaches," he added.

Chahal said that there was no pressure on the young Indian bowling attack in this series in absence of seniors like Jasprit Bumrah. "They have played a lot of matches, they have a lot of experience in IPL and in first-class cricket. You cannot say that this line-up is inexperienced," he added.

With this victory, India has a 1-0 lead in the series. India posted a massive 308/7 in their first innings. Half-centuries from captain Shikhar Dhawan (97), Shubman Gill (64) and Shreyas Iyer (54) were instrumental in taking the Men in Blue to the huge score. Gudakesh Motie was the pick of the bowlers with 2/54 in ten overs.

In chase of 309, half-centuries from Kyle Mayers (75) and Brandon King (54) helped Windies stay alive in the game. Akeal Hosein (32*) and Romario Shepherd (39*) almost took their side across the finishing line, but Indian bowlers held their nerves to seal a thrilling three-run win.

Mohammed Siraj was the best bowler for India, with 2/57 in ten overs. He held his composure and did not allow the Windies to reach the target when they were just 15 runs away from it in the final over. Dhawan scored a brilliant knock of 97 in the match, which also earned him the `Man of the Match` award.

Following the thrilling three-run win over West Indies in the first ODI, Indian spinner Yuzvendra Chahal said that the team had confidence that Mohammed Siraj would be able to defend 15 runs in the final over.

India and West Indies will square off in the three-match ODI series on Friday evening (July 22). India and West Indies will kick off their white-ball series on Friday (July 22) in Port of Spain, Trinidad. In regular captain Rohit Sharma's absence, Shikhar Dhawan will take charge of the new-look side which comprises several young faces such as Deepak Hooda, Sanju Samson, Avesh Khan, Shubman Gill, and Arshdeep Singh among others.

Not only Rohit, even the likes of Virat Kohli, Rishabh Pant and Jasprit Bumrah have been rested for the tour (although Pant will join for the T20Is). Talking about KL Rahul and Ravindra Jadeja (who has been named as Dhawan's deputy for the ODIs), the former has tested Covid positive whereas the all-rounder is suffering from a knee injury and is, most likely, to sit out.

India reached Trinidad from Manchester, after the completion of their successful tour of England, amid heavy rain in the Caribbean island. Hence, the Rahul Dravid-Dhawan-led team management had to shift their training session indoors. Thus, rain can be a factor for the three-match ODI series opener on Friday evening.

WI vs IND, 1st ODI, weather forecast: Will rain make its presence felt in series opener in Trinidad?

Team India have reached Trinidad for the upcoming three-match ODI series versus Nicholas Pooran-led West Indies, which gets underway on July 22. India left for the West Indies tour soon after the conclusion of their all-format tour of England, which ended on July 17.

In regular captain Rohit Sharma's absence, out due to rest, Shikhar Dhawan is in-charge of the side and the left-hander will once again get a chance to lead the Men in Blue after the 2021 Sri Lanka tour. Interestingly, it is believed that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) have spent a whopping sum for the Indian team's flight to West Indies. As per a report in the Times of India, BCCI booked a chartered flight for the team's travel from England to the Caribbean island.

"The BCCI spent Rs 3.5 crore on the chartered flight which took Team India from Manchester on Tuesday afternoon to Port of Spain (the capital of Trinidad and Tobago) by 11.30 pm IST. The reason a chartered flight was booked for the team was not Covid-19. It's difficult to book so many tickets in a commercial flight-the Indian contingent includes 16 players and members of the support staff, including head coach Rahul Dravid. There are players' wives who have travelled to the Caribbean too," the source told TOI on Wednesday (July 20).

"Normally, in a commercial flight, this expense would've been around Rs 2 crore. A business class ticket from Manchester to Port of Spain would be around Rs 2 lakh. BCCI churns out a whopping sum for Shikhar Dhawan-led India's flight to West Indies: Report

Team India is set to play West Indies in three ODIs and five T20Is, in the Caribbean island, with the tour opener to take place on Friday (July 22). In Rohit Sharma's absence, Shikhar Dhawan will take charge of the ODI side whereas Hitman will reclaim his position during the five T20Is.

In the year 2022, India have had several captains such as Rohit, Virat Kohli, KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant, Hardik Pandya, and Jasprit Bumrah whereas Dhawan will also join the list, having already captained a second-stringed side during the Sri Lanka tour last year. Ahead of the WI series, former New Zealand all-rounder Scott Styris feels Shreyas Iyer is also a future captaincy candidate provided he cashes in on his opportunities and gets rid of his short-ball struggles.

Styris agreed that the forthcoming WI tour can be a do-or-die condition for Iyer, who hasn't done anything extraordinary since his return in India colours after IPL 2022. The New Zealander also termed the star batter as a captaincy choice and told Sports 18, "One hundred percent, what I really like about Shreyas Iyer is the leadership quality that he possesses. I think he is a real possibility to be a captain as well for India. For that reason, I would like to see him in and even given more and more opportunities around this squad."

"What I don't like is that there is no secret about Shreyas Iyer now. He has real problems with the short ball. I think you will see a lot of teams attack him with their quick bowlers, attack him at the body with the bouncers, under the armpit, if you like, because I am not sure he has found a way," the former cricketer added.

In the just-concluded India tour of England, the 33-year-old former Indian skipper returned with not even a single fifty-plus score across formats and won't be part of India's white-ball tour of West Indies, starting on June 22.

Thus, the discussion around Kohli's form continues to gather pace in the world cricket. India's veteran keeper-batter Dinesh Karthik has now joined the bandwagon and extended his support to his Royal Challengers Bangalore's (RCB) teammate Kohli.

On the sidelines of a training session with young and aspiring cricketers at Jaipur's PS Sports Excellence Arena, Karthik told TOI, "Virat has experienced insane success over the period of time. Now he will get a good break and will come back all recharged and hopefully will do phenomenally well. You can never rule out a player of his calibre."

Karthik then shifted focus to his own career as he has made a comeback into the national side after a long gap, owing to his success in IPL 2022. "It is never easy, but I have worked hard for it. Also, given the bench strength that we have today, the competition is always going to be a part of it. This is the beauty of Indian cricket," added the 36-year-old.

'You can never....': Dinesh Karthik comes to Virat Kohli's defence amid his lean patch

After much wait, the BCCI selection committee -- headed by Chetan Sharma -- has named the India T20I squad for the upcoming tour of West Indies, which commences on July 22. While the tour will kick off with three ODIs, where Shikhar Dhawan will lead a second-stringed side, regular captain Rohit Sharma will return to take charge of the side during the five T20Is.

The five T20Is will start from July 29 as the selection committee announced a strong 18-member squad, sans Virat Kohli and Jasprit Bumrah. A lot was said and written about Kohli and whether he should be skipping series despite his poor form, however, he has not been named along with premier pacer Bumrah. The duo have been rested, as per PTI, nonetheless, there is no such mention in the BCCI release and tweet.

The squad also sees the return of regular white-ball vice-captain KL Rahul, who isn't part of the England tour due to an injury. However, Rahul and Kuldeep Yadav's inclusion is subject to fitness. Veteran spinner R Ashwin has made a comeback in the T20I line-up whereas there was no mention of Yuzvendra Chahal. Chahal was in-form during IPL 2022 and even returned as the Player-of-the-Match in one of the two T20Is versus Ireland. In the England T20Is, he bowled six overs and returned with four scalps, at an economy of 7. Hence, it is likely that he has also been given some rest.

Among other absentees, Umran Malik is also not part of the squad, after missing out on being part of the WI ODIs as well. Among the rested players, Kohli's form remains a cause of concern for the national side. With the T20 World Cup set to be held later this year, from October-November in Australia, India need their big guns to play regularly, regain form and remain fit.
