Chennai Super Kings (CSK) went down to the debutants Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) by six wickets as the Ravindra Jadeja-led Yellow Army failed to defend a mammoth 211-run target in match 7 of IPL 2022 edition, held at the Brabourne Stadium Mumbai on Thursday (March 31).&nbsp;

Riding on rapid knocks from Robin Uthappa, Moeen Ali, Ambati Rayudu, Jadeja, Shivam Dube and MS Dhoni's cameo, CSK posted an impressive 210-7 in 20 overs after KL Rahul &amp; Co. decided to bowl first. Nonetheless, Quinton de Kock's 61, Evin Lewis' 55* and Ayush Badoni's 9-ball 19* resulted in LSG's six-wicket win in the final over of the high-scoring affair. While dew and shabby fielding effort led to CSK's second defeat in a row, former cricketers and experts Ajay Jadeja and Parthiv Patel slammed Dhoni for taking full control and calling the shots amid skipper Jadeja's presence in the end overs.&nbsp;

In Cricbuzz Live, Jadeja pointed out, "It is wrong, there is no doubt about that. See, there is no bigger fan of Dhoni than I am, and that's because of his temperament. If this was the last match of the group where there was a do-or-die situation in terms of qualification, then I could've probably understood that you would want to take over the reins because it is an important phase. But if it happens only in the second match of the season.."

"See, I'm not saying this because it's Ravindra Jadeja. But even as a cricket fan, it looked a little odd. He (Jadeja) was standing right there and you continued to run the whole game. See, Dhoni is a very big player and I don't like saying it out loud. But I didn't like what I saw today."

“There hasn't been a captain like Dhoni nor there will be. But it was his decision to step down as CSK captain and today, instead of pushing him (Jadeja) forward, you have actually dragged him back. His confidence is dented. He wasn't in the game at all," Jadeja further explained.

“I'm not criticising the decisions. I'm being critical of the way he (Dhoni) took over. We noticed Dhoni speaking during the team meeting. There's no doubt Dhoni understands the game better and even CSK fans would be urging him to take over the captaincy again. But I have no doubt that he was wrong in taking over today. If Jadeja was even beginning to feel confident about his captaincy, he won't now," the former cricketer added.

Meanwhile, Patel stated, "If you have to develop someone you have to leave them. He will only become a captain if he is allowed to lead. He will learn only when he makes mistakes."

At this point, CSK's captaincy situation doesn't look good as Jadeja is not having full control on the field due to Dhoni's presence, leading to the team going haywire in crunch situations.&nbsp;

'Too early to talk too much': Gautam Gambhir has his say on Lucknow Super Giants youngster

Ayush Badoni's name was on every cricket fan's lips after the debutant set the stage alight on his Indian Premier&nbsp;League (IPL) debut against Gujarat Titans on Monday (March 28). The young batter from Delhi stole the show with his impressive batting under pressure for his side Lucknow Super Giants in their opening game of the season and earned applause from all corners.

Badoni, who had played only five T20 games in his career before making his IPL debut for Lucknow on Monday, displayed amazing temperament and skills as he took his time to settle down his nerves before launching an all-out attack against the Gujarat Titans bowlers.

Badoni came out to bat at number six when Lucknow were reeling at 29/4 in 4.3 overs. He combined with in-form Deepak Hooda, who slammed a brilliant knock of 55 runs off 41 balls, to add an 87-run stand for the fifth wicket. The youngster looked unfazed despite coming out to bat in a pressure situation on his debut.

Badoni went on to score 54 off 41 balls laced with four fours and three sixes as he took the likes of Hardik Pandya and Rashid Khan to the cleaners. Badoni's impressive show on debut left many in awe of the 22-year-old, who had scored just 8 runs in five T20 matches before Monday.

Badoni credited former India opener and Lucknow Super Giants' mentor Gautam Gambhir for backing him a lot and showing his faith in him from the very first game of the season. Badoni revealed Gambhir told him not to bat as per the situation and play his natural game as there were seniors in the side who are there to play as per the match situation.

Half-centuries from Badoni and Hoods helped Lucknow Super Giants in bouncing back after a top-order collapse as they managed to post a total of 158/6 on the board in 20 overs. However, their efforts went in vain as Gujarat Titans chased down the target with two balls to spare in the thrilling encounter to hand Lucknow their first defeat of the season.

Nonetheless, it was Badoni, who became an overnight star after his sensational debut. The young batter had been going unsold in the IPL for the last three auctions and was finally glad to get a chance to show his talent in the league.

"I have been in the auction for three years and have gone unsold. I have been to trials for two-three teams but nobody picked me at the auction eventually. So I am grateful to Lucknow for picking me," said the 22-year-old, who is expected to become a regular feature in Lucknow's playing XI this season.

Mumbai Indians (MI) skipper Rohit Sharma achieved yet another captaincy milestone as he led his side out against Delhi Capitals in their opening game of the ongoing IPL 2022 season on Sunday (March 27). Rohit, who started leading Mumbai Indians from the 2013 season, is the captain with the most number of IPL titles as he has so far led his team to five title triumphs under his captaincy. While he has already gone past Gambhir in the list of players with most matches as captain, he will now aim to go past Kohli, who has stepped down as the captain of RCB.

IPL 2022: MI skipper Rohit Sharma goes past Gautam Gambhir in elite list, eyes Virat Kohli's record

KL Rahul is all set to embark on a new journey in his Indian Premier League (IPL) career as he will lead debutants Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in the upcoming season. Rahul captained Punjab Kings for two seasons and was also their leading run-getter in both the editions before deciding to leave the franchise to join Lucknow Super Giants this year.

At Punjab Kings, the expectations were high from Rahul when he was appointed as the leader of the side ahead of IPL 2020. However, he failed to impress as a captain as Punjab failed to make it to the playoffs in two seasons under his leadership. The imbalance in Punjab's squad and an inconsistent middle-order were seen as two of the major reasons behind the team's struggles under Rahul.

As an opener, Rahul would lead from the front and score heap of runs for his franchise but the lack of support in the middle-order often hampered his strike rate and aggressive instincts while batting. Former India opener Gautam Gambhir, who will be the mentor of the Lucknow Super Giants in IPL 2022, wants Rahul to not repeat the mistakes from his time at Punjab Kings.

Gambhir said he would like Rahul the batter to take charge and take calculated risks in order to improve his and his team's performances on the pitch. Gambhir also confirmed that Rahul will not have to keep wickets for LSG to ensure he has less pressure and is&nbsp;relaxed as captain.

"Ultimately, it is the leader who is the flag-bearer of a team and so it's Rahul who will lead Lucknow Super Giants on and off the field. For me, it is important to have KL Rahul the batter, who is also the captain of the team rather than KL Rahul, the captain, who also bats. I hope I am able to make you understand the difference,” Gambhir said in a&nbsp;conversation with PTI.

"Any captain should learn to take risks. I would want Rahul to take risks and unless you take calculated risks, you won't know if you would succeed or not. Also this time, Quinton de Kock will be our wicketkeeper, so with no keeping duties, he can be free and relaxed, concentrating on his batting and leadership,” he explained.

Gambhir also issued a warning to Rahul in regards to his India captaincy aspirations. The stylish right-hander is currently the vice-captain of the Indian team across formats and is seen as one of the future leaders of the Indian team. He has also captained the Indian team in a few matches in the absence of regular skipper Rohit Sharma.

When asked if there will be additional pressure on Rahul to prove his captaincy credentials in the IPL keeping the India job in mind, Gambhir said no one should play in the IPL looking at the national team. The Lucknow Super Giants mentor believes IPl performances will not guarantee India captaincy for Rahul.

"Know one thing. There is a difference between being talked up as a future India captain and ultimately being appointed India captain. I have never believed that you should play IPL looking at the national team. IPL is a platform to express one's self. One can grow as a leader but there are no guarantees that there is a time period that IPL will help you become India captain," said Gambhir.

The IPL 2022 edition is set to commence on March 26 at the iconic Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai. Two new teams in the form of Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) and Gujarat Titans (GT) will look to challenge the eight old franchises for the coveted title.

Ahead of the commencement of the forthcoming season, there is a lot of excitement on some of the newly-formed pairs in all teams. Among them, all eyes are on how Krunal Pandya-Deepak Hooda form a lethal all-round pair for the Lucknow franchise, keeping their differences aside. For the unversed, Hooda and Krunal were involved in a huge controversy during their time at the Baroda team. Back then,&nbsp;Hooda&nbsp;had accused his state captain Krunal of bullying him. Later, he decided to part ways and&nbsp;quit the team.

'I've not been friends with everyone...': Lucknow mentor Gambhir on Krunal Pandya- Deepak Hooda's equation

Former India opener and ex-captain of the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) Gautam Gambhir recently opened up on his heated on-field spat with Virat Kohli during the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2013. Gambhir and Kohli were involved in a heated argument on the field after the latter was dismissed by pacer Laxmipathy Balaji in the game.

Gambhir, who led Kolkata Knight Riders to two IPL titles as captain, is one of the most successful captains in the history of the league. The former India opener had lost his cool on Kohli during a game between Royal Challengers Bangalore and KKR in IPL 2013. While Gambhir had already led KKR to their maiden title in the previous year, it was Kohli's first year as the captain of RCB.

During the game, Kohli was seen losing his temper after getting dismissed by Balaji. He later went on to have a heated spat with Gambhir. Opening up on the incident, Gambhir said he was absolutely fine with what unfolded on the day as he likes people who are competitive. Both Gambhir was fierce competitor during his playing days, Kohli's aggressive style of playing his game is a secret to none.

"That's OK, I am absolutely fine with it and I expect him to be like that. I am like that. I like that contest, I like people who are competitive. MS Dhoni is a competitor in his own way, Virat is a competitor in his own way," Gambhir said when asked about the incident&nbsp;on popular sports presenter Jatin Sapru's YouTube channel.

"Sometimes when you are leading the side, you have to do it even if you don't want to do it because you want your team to play the way you want. As a leader, sometimes you are not thinking about personal relationships with the other guy [but] just because you are leading a team, you have to do it," he explained further.

Former India opener Gautam Gambhir hs rubbished the rumours that he doesn't like former India captain MS Dhoni and that all is not well between the two former India teammates. Gambhir and Dhoni shared the Indian dressing room for nearly a decade and were part of some of the most memorable victories for Team India including the ICC T20 World Cup triumph in 2007 and the ICC ODI World Cup win in 2011.

Gambhir made his debut for the Indian team much before Dhoni in 2003 itself but he went on to play for a number of years under the latter's captaincy. Gambhir was also Dhoni's deputy across formats for a number of years for the Indian team and led the side in the former captain's absence in six matches. When asked why some people think he doesn't like Dhoni, Gambhir called the rumours 'crap' and said he has a lot of mutual respect for the former India captain.

Gambhir also heaped praise on Dhoni for his contributions towards Indian cricket and said he will be the first person to stand next to the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) captain if he is ever in need in life. Gambhir also explained that he and Dhoni might have had their own ways of looking at the game but it was never the case that they didn't like each other or didn't get along well.

Former Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) captain Gautam Gambhir has named one Indian star who used to give him sleepless nights in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Gambhir is one of the most successful leaders in the history of IPL with two trophies to his name as the captain of KKR.

Gambhir led KKR to their maiden IPL triumph in 2012 before inspiring them to another trophy in 2014. Gambhir's KKR had defeated MS Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the IPL 2012 final to lift their first title before beating Punjab Kings in the final of the 2014 edition to win their second IPL crown.

As a captain, Gambhir came up against some of the best skippers in the IPL in the form of MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma among others. Recalling his captaincy stint for KKR, Gambhir revealed Rohit was one captain who used to give him 'sleepless nights'.

Gambhir hailed Rohit as the most successful cricketer in the history of IPL and lauded him for being a terrific leader. Rohit is the most successful captain in the history of IPL with five titles to his name for his side Mumbai Indians.&nbsp;

"As captain, Rohit Sharma is the only player who gave me sleepless nights. Neither Chris Gayle nor AB de Villiers nor anyone else, only Rohit Sharma. He is the player who gave me sleepless nights," said Gambhir on Star Sports.

R Ashwin created history when he surpassed Kapil Dev's wicket-tally (434) to become India's second-highest wicket-taker in Tests (436). The 35-year-old wily off-spinner achieved the feat during Rohit Sharma-led India's massive win over Sri Lanka in the first Test in Mohali.

Earlier, Ashwin had surpassed Harbhajan Singh's wicket-tally (417) when India hosted New Zealand in two Tests in late 2021. Thus, he is now India's most successful off-spinner in whites and remains only behind leg spinner Anil Kumble (619) in terms of most wickets among Indians in the red-ball format (ninth-most wickets overall). In the past, comparisons have often taken place between Ashwin and Harbhajan, two of India's most successful off-spinners. Thus, former Indian opener Gautam Gambhir picked the most difficult spinner to face among Ashwin and Bhajji.

And Ashwin, for a left-hander or any other batter, he is much more difficult to face because he is far more accurate and difficult because of his speed variations. Harbhajan Singh was more beautiful to watch,” he said.&nbsp;

R Ashwin or Harbhajan Singh? Gautam Gambhir picks the more difficult off-spinner to face

Team India locked horns with Sri Lanka in the two-match Test series opener at the PCA IS Bindra Stadium, Mohali on Friday (March 04). Former captain Virat Kohli headlined the day's proceedings as he featured&nbsp;in his 100th game in whites and, thus, joined an elite list of Indian cricketers to have done the same, such as Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, Sunil Gavaskar, Sourav Ganguly, Kapil Dev, Virender Sehwag, etc.

Coming out to bat, after India won the toss and were 80/2, Kohli joined forces with No. 3 batter Hanuma Vihari and stitched an impressive 90-run stand for the third-wicket before falling for a good-looking 45 (76). On the other hand, the likes of captain Rohit Sharma (29), Mayank Agarwal (33), Vihari (58) and Shreyas Iyer (27) also got starts but were all back in the pavillion by the end of second session.

Speaking on the post-Tea show on Star Sports on Day 1 of the first Test, former Indian opener Gautam Gambhir shared a word of advice for&nbsp;the Indian batters following their dismissals.&nbsp;

“One of the major concerns is that the bat is in the line of pads. When that happens, it is difficult to play deliveries that turn away as well as those that don't turn,” Gambhir noted.&nbsp;

ALSO READ |&nbsp;<a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/gautam-gambhir-names-two-batters-who-can-replace-axed-duo-pujara-and-rahane-for-india-in-tests-458901">Gautam Gambhir names two batters who can replace axed duo Pujara and Rahane for India in Tests</a>

Reflecting on Kohli and Mayank's dismissals, Gambhir said, "If you keep your bat ahead of your pad, you will be beaten only on one edge. When you look at Mayank Agarwal's dismissal, he was beaten on the inside edge. In Virat Kohli's case, he was beaten on the outside edge. So, it is very important to have your bat ahead of your pad.”

“This is usually taught in formative years. Nowadays, you play so much limited-overs cricket that you lose your basics, the good habits die down. You've concentrated significantly on fast bowling, so I believe Indian batters have a scope for improvement in tackling spin,” added Gambhir.

On the other hand, the likes of captain Rohit Sharma (29), Mayank Agarwal (33), Vihari (58) and Shreyas Iyer (27) also got starts but were all back in the pavillion by the end of second session. ALSO READ | 'Because of his stature, no one...': Ex-selector slams BCCI chief Sourav Ganguly for attending team meetings Speaking on the post-Tea show on Star Sports on Day 1 of the first Test, former Indian opener Gautam Gambhir shared a word of advice for the Indian batters following their dismissals. “One of the major concerns is that the bat is in the line of pads. When that happens, it is difficult to play deliveries that turn away as well as those that don't turn,” Gambhir noted. ALSO READ | Gautam Gambhir names two batters who can replace axed duo Pujara and Rahane for India in Tests Reflecting on Kohli and Mayank's dismissals, Gambhir said, "If you keep your bat ahead of your pad, you will be beaten only on one edge. When you look at Mayank Agarwal's dismissal, he was beaten on the inside edge. In Virat Kohli's case, he was beaten on the outside edge. So, it is very important to have your bat ahead of your pad.” “This is usually taught in formative years. Nowadays, you play so much limited-overs cricket that you lose your basics, the good habits die down. You've concentrated significantly on fast bowling, so I believe Indian batters have a scope for improvement in tackling spin,” added Gambhir. Indian batters have a scope for improvement in tackling spin: Gambhir on Kohli, Mayank's dismissal

Former India opener Gautam Gambhir believes it won't be too difficult for Rohit Sharma to succeed as captain for India in Tests. Rohit is leading India in his first Test series as the captain of the side, against Sri Lanka in Mohali. After a dream start to his stint as India's full-time captain in limited-overs cricket, Rohit will be hoping to get off to a winning start in Tests.

While Rohit has already established his credentials as an exceptional captain in white-ball cricket, the Hitman is yet to prove his mettle as captain in the longest format. However, Gambhir believes Rohit won't find it tough to succeed in Tests given the kind of bowling strength India developed during Virat Kohli's tenure as captain of the Test team.

Kohli, who stepped down as the Test captain of the Indian team in January this year, is often credited to have nurtured India's current world-class pace attack consisting of the likes of Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, Mohammed Siraj and Ishan Sharma among others.

Though Ishant is not part of the ongoing two-match series against Sri Lanka, he was instrumental in India's success in Tests under Kohli's captaincy. Gambhir also believes India have ideal replacements for the axed duo of Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane in the form of Hanuma Vihari and Shreyas Iyer.

Both Pujara and Rahane were dropped from the Test squad for the ongoing series against Sri Lanka. Gambhir believes India can replace the senior batters with Iyer and Vihari, who have significant experience behind them in international and domestic cricket.&nbsp;

“I don’t think so. Because it won’t be a big challenge for Rohit Sharma in red-ball cricket. If you talk about Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinka Rahane, you have experienced players like Hanuma Vihari and Shreyas Iyer who can replace them. Iyer had made a bright start to Test cricket,” Gambhir said on Star Sports.

“When you have Ashwin, Jadeja, Shami, Bumrah, then it doesn’t get (difficult). Bowlers win you matches, batters only set the match up. Virat Kohli has developed India’s bowling strength, so I don’t think it should be difficult for Rohit Sharma in red-ball cricket,” he added.

While Vihari has been a part of India's Test plans for a while now having already played 13 Tests so far in his career, Iyer made his debut in the longest format during the New Zealand series at home in November last year. Both the batters have done well in the limited opportunities they have got so far and will be eager to cement their spots in the Test side.

Virat Kohli vs BCCI row has hogged the headlines for over a month now. After Kohli resigned as the T20I captain, following the T20 World Cup last year, he was sacked as the ODI skipper before he himself gave up Test captaincy, early this year.

During all this, Kohli's relations with the BCCI has downhill. With him contradicting&nbsp;BCCI chief Sourav Ganguly's claims on his T20I captaincy resignation, Kohli's explosive presser in early December 2021 exposed the gap between him and the top board officials. Now, former Indian opener Gautam Gambhir has reacted to the whole controversy.&nbsp;

Gambhir, who doesn't mince his words, told Times Now, "I think this could've been sorted behind closed doors as well. It was an internal battle. It was a great TRP for a lot of new channels but that's fine. If you go to the depth of it, the matter can easily be solved. It's not that big of an issue."

"Honestly, I don't see any controversy which was created. Talking about captaincy, I think Virat should have continued as red-ball captain. But for white-ball captaincy, once he decided to let go of T20I captaincy, he had to let go of ODI captaincy as well. The BCCI and the selectors were right from the white-ball point of view. But it was Virat's personal decision to step down from Test captaincy, which he should have continued," he further added.

Recently, Kohli had also opened up on his decision to give up Team India captaincy altogether by resigning as the Test skipper. He cited MS Dhoni's example&nbsp;and said on an episode of 'Fireside Chat with VK', "See, I think firstly you need to have a complete understanding of what you set out to achieve and whether you have achieved those targets or not. Everything has a tenure and time period, so you have to be aware of it. As a batter, you might be able to give more to the team, so take pride in that."&nbsp;

He further opined, "You do not need to be a captain to be the leader. When MS Dhoni was in the team, it was not like he was not the leader, he was still the guy from whom we wanted to have input. To win or not win is not in your hands, the striving for excellence and to be better every day, is not something you can do short term. Former India opener Gautam Gambhir has defended KL Rahul after intense criticism over his poor captaincy in the recently-concluded ODI series between India and South Africa. Rahul-led India suffered a 3-0 whitewash in the three-match series against the hosts. Rahul had been asked to lead the side against the Proteas in the absence of regular skipper Rohit Sharma, who was out injured.

Gambhir said it is too early to judge Rahul as a leader on the basis of just four matches that he has led India in so far. Rahul had earlier led India in the second Test of the three-match series against South Africa which the visitors lost before losing all three ODIs on the tour. In four matches that he has led India in, Rahul has failed to inspire his side to even a single win.

Rahul has been facing intense criticism for his poor captaincy in the series with many questioning his leadership credentials. However, Gambhir has responded to the star batter's critics and said it is unfair to judge Rahul so early.&nbsp;

"Sometimes we start relating someone just with performances and the results. It's too early to judge someone by just captaining 4 games," Gambhir was quoted as saying by India Today.

While Rahul is yet to win a game as the captain of the Indian team, he led Punjab Kings for two seasons in the Indian Premier League (IPL) where he failed to take the team to the playoffs in both seasons. Rahul has now left Punjab to join the Lucknow Super Giants team ahead of the new season and Gambhir has been roped in as the mentor of the Lucknow franchise.

Gambhir believes Rahul has the attributes of a great captain and has a bright future as a leader in the game. Rahul will lead Lucknow Super Giants in their debut season in the IPL this year. Though Gambhir admitted Rahul is a work in progress as captain, he believes the star batter has the qualities to become a successful captain.

"But the most important attribute a leader should have is he doesn't fly too high that he doesn't go down too deep either. That is probably the best quality KL Rahul has. Always captaincy is a work in progress. You can never say, as a player or as a leader, that you have achieved everything. You want to keep improving every day. You got to be the best of yourself till the last day of your career," said Gambhir.

"Whatever I have seen of KL, he has a great, great future ahead not only as a batter but as a leader as well. Because that is a quality that very few people have - being calm and composed. When you start doing that, that reflects on the entire team as well.

"When you have that kind of leader, the entire squad will benefit a lot. And I am sure he is going to do that, knowing the kind of person that he is," added the Lucknow Super Giants mentor.

Rahul, who has not had great campaign as captain in the IPL in the last two seasons, will be hoping to spark a turnaround this year as the skipper of the Lucknow Super Giants. The newly-introduced franchise has roped in Australian all-rounder Marcus Stoinis and young Indian spinner Ravi Bishnoi ahead of the IPL 2022 mega auction.

'Too early to judge': Gautam Gambhir responds to KL Rahul's critics after his poor captaincy vs South Africa

On January 15, Virat Kohli gave up Test captaincy. This came a day after India lost the three-match Test series versus South Africa 2-1, in the rainbow nation. While Kohli had already resigned as the T20I captain and was sacked as the ODI skipper, he was expected to carry on as the leader in whites for a few more years.

Thus, Team India is set to enter a new phase in the upcoming white-ball home series versus West Indies where Rohit Sharma will completely take over as the limited-overs&nbsp;skipper. Many eyes will still be on Kohli, who will play his first-ever home series without captaincy responsibilities on his shoulders. Ahead of the India-WI ODIs, which gets underway on February 6, former Indian opener Gautam Gambhir opined on Kohli the player. The 2011 World Cup-winning member Gambhir feels nothing changes for Kohli and the Rahul Dravid-led team management's approach towards him following his captaincy tenure.

"Nothing changes," Gambhir told Sports Today. He opined, "When you are growing up as a kid you want to try and win games for the country and that is all that matters. You don't dream of captaining the side from day one so for me nothing changes. If it does then there is something seriously wrong. Captaincy is just a honour and responsibility and I'm sure Virat would be thinking the same way."

Meanwhile, Team India have a lot to do in the white-ball formats with recent disastrous performances in the 2021 T20 World Cup -- in the UAE -- and the 3-0 whitewash at the hands of Temba Bavuma-led South Africa in the ODI series. Many have called for India to change their playing style and adopt a new and aggressive template in the shorter formats.&nbsp;

However, Gambhir doesn't feel a change of template is required and stated that they are very 'overrated'.&nbsp;&nbsp;He said, "I've always thought of only one template which is to score the last run if you are chasing and take the last wicket if your defending. As simple as that, there is no other template that makes sense to me. All these are created by the media, the finisher, opener, death bowler and all."

It is just an honour: Gautam Gambhir feels nothing changes for Virat Kohli post captaincy tenure

Former India opener Gautam Gambhir has urged the Indian team management to end their quest of finding a fast-bowling all-rounder who can contribute in&nbsp;both departments. Over the last few years, India have tried a number of pace all-rounders like Vijay Shankar and Shivam Dube among others who have failed to cement a spot in the team.

The search seemed to have ended after star all-rounder Hardik Pandya's international debut in 2016 as he went on to shone with the bat and the ball to become an integral member of the squad across all formats. However, Pandya's career has gone downhill since back surgery in 2019 as he has refrained from bowling regularly.

Hardik's fitness issues led to the Indian team once again looking for fast-bowling all-rounders, who can contribute well. Venkatesh Iyer is the latest all-rounder to find a spot in the Indian team after his heroics for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 last year. While the expectations are huge from Iyer, he is yet to prove himself at the biggest stage.

In the recently-concluded ODI series against South Africa, Iyer played the first two games where he managed only 24 runs before being dropped for the third and final encounter. In his debut T20I series against New Zealand, the left-hander batter had scored only 36 runs in two matches.

With India failing to find an all-rounder, who can be a long-term option, Gambhir has asked the team management to drop the search and focus on the players available. The former India opener believes the team management should not try to create something that they can't create.

"If you don't have something, don't go for it. You have to accept and move on. Don't try and create something which you can't create, that is where the problem lies," said Gambhir on Sports Today.&nbsp;

Gambhir also criticised the idea of grooming a player at the international stage. Many have suggested that Venkatesh Iyer is currently being groomed as a finisher for the Indian team. Gambhir said India have been searching for a genuine fast-bowling all-rounder since Kapil Dev and that the team should move on.

"I have always believed that international cricket is all about delivering and not grooming someone. Grooming happens in domestic and India A level. When you represent your country, you should be ready to go out there and perform straightaway," said Gambhir.

"We keep talking about not having an all-rounder since Kapil Dev to be honest. So move on and try to develop people at the Ranji Trophy and once they get ready, get them in international cricket and stick with them. Don't keep changing them quickly. We have seen that with so many guys like Vijay Shankar, Shivam Dube and now Venkatesh Iyer. We need to move on," he added.

"If you don't have something, don't go for it. You have to accept and move on. Don't try and create something which you can't create, that is where the problem lies," said Gambhir on Sports Today. Also Read: 'I am not married to him': Harbhajan gives cheeky response, clears air on rumoured rift with MS Dhoni Gambhir also criticised the idea of grooming a player at the international stage.

Talking about it since Kapil Dev: Gautam Gambhir urges India to move on from search of a pace all-rounder

Veteran Pakistan wicket-keeper batter Kamran Akmal recently opened up on his on-field clash with former India opener Gautam Gambhir during the game between India and Pakistan in the Asia Cup 2010. The two cricketers were involved a heated exchange during the match and Akmal revealed it was due to a 'misunderstanding'.

Akmal, who is currently in action in the ongoing Legends League Cricket (LLC), claimed he shares a great rapport with Gambhir and that their relationship has not strained off the field due to their on-field clash. Akmal opened up on his battle with Gambhir in a video shared by Legends League Cricket on their social media handles.

Akmal said he has played a lot with Gambhir during his playing days and that there is no rivalry between the two. The veteran Pakistani keeper-batter also clarified that there is no rivalry between him and India pacer Ishant Sharma either.

"Things heated up a bit with Gautam Gambhir during the 2010 Asia Cup but it was all due to misunderstandings. He is a very good friend. We have played a lot of 'A' cricket together. There is no such rivalry with Ishant Sharma too," said Akmal.

Akmal and Gambhir came up against each other on several occasions while playing for their respective countries on the international stage. The former India opener was involved in on-field clashes with not only Akmal but a few other Pakistani cricketers as well, including Shahid Afridi.

India and Pakistan have not played a bilateral series against each other since 2012 and continue to meet only in major ICC tournaments. The twp teams last met in the ICC T20 World Cup 2021 where Pakistan got the better of the Men in Blue by ten wickets.

Team India is going through a transition phase at the moment. After Virat Kohli stepped down as the T20I captain, announcing it before the World Cup in the UAE, and was sacked as the ODI skipper, Rohit Sharma has succeeded him in the white-ball formats and remains a top contender to become the all-format leader following Kohli's Test resignation.

At present, India are gearing up for a white-ball series versus Kieron Pollard-led West Indies at home. Ahead of the series, which gets underway on February 6 in Ahmedabad, former WI skipper Daren Sammy lavished huge praise on Rohit and feels Indian cricket is in good hands despite the white-ball captaincy baton being passed from Kohli to Hitman.

The former West Indies skipper further said that he's “not worried about Indian cricket. All these guys can manage to get performances from their teammates. These captains normally get results and win trophies. I'm not worried about Indian cricket. It's in good hands."

He told the countrymen in his speech, "My heartiest greetings to all of you, in India and abroad, on the eve of the 73rd&nbsp;Republic Day! Virat Kohli, Neeraj Chopra lead wishes from sports fraternity as India celebrates 73rd Republic Day

Former India opener Gautam Gambhir has issued a warning to the Lucknow Super Giants players ahead of their debut season in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Gambhir, a two-time IPL-winning captain will be serving as the mentor of the newly-integrated franchise in IPL 2022. The former India opener is known for his outspoken nature and never shies away from putting his message across loud and clear.

Gambhir will be returning to the Indian Premier League for the first time since his retirement as a player and will be taking up the role of a mentor for Lucknow Super Giants. Lucknow are one of the two new teams who are set to make their debut in the IPL this year. Ahead of the IPL 2022 mega auction which is all set to take place next month, Gambhir has sent a stern message to the current players and the probable players of the franchise.

Gambhir has said he would not want players in his team who are playing in the IPL with the ultimate aim of playing for India. The former opener believes playing for India is a byproduct of the player's performances in the league and that if a player is using the IPL as a platform to play for India in future then he is being dishonest to the franchise.

"When I’ve captained, I have always said I don’t want players thinking of playing for India. I want players thinking of playing for the franchise. Playing for India is just the byproduct," Gambhir said on the show Backstage with Boria.

"If you think of playing for India and you start saying that Lucknow gives me that platform to play for India, then you are being dishonest to the franchise. But if you were to play for Lucknow and deliver it for Lucknow, eventually you will end up playing for India."

Gambhir believes the players' ultimate aim should not be to use IPL as a platform t relaise their dream of playing for India but to make sure they give their hundred percent in delivering for the franchise and win the tournament for them. The former India opener said players should take IPL as a platform to showcase their talent.

"So probably in those two months, I would not want any of the players saying or thinking that my job or my ultimate aim is to play for India. Their ultimate aim for those two months is to win the tournament for the franchise. And if they look to do that with their performances, they will eventually go on to play for India," said Gambhir.

But if you were to play for Lucknow and deliver it for Lucknow, eventually you will end up playing for India." Also Read: Lucknow Super Giants! RPSG Group-owned IPL franchise unveil their name ahead of debut season Gambhir believes the players' ultimate aim should not be to use IPL as a platform t relaise their dream of playing for India but to make sure they give their hundred percent in delivering for the franchise and win the tournament for them. "And IPL is not a platform to go on to play for India. IPL is a platform to showcase your talent to the world, and that is how players should think about it," he added.

Former India opener Gautam Gambhir believes the Indian team management will have to back Rishabh Pant patiently in order to groom him into a mature finisher for the team. Pant is facing intense criticism from all corners after throwing his wicket away in the third and final ODI against South Africa in Cape Town on Sunday.

Pant came out to bat at number four with Inda 118/3 in the 288-run chase after losing the wicket of Shikhar Dhawan. While he was expected to build a partnership with Virat Kohli, who was batting on the other end, Pant was dismissed by Andile Phehlukwayo as he went for a big shot.

He was caught in the deep by Sisanda Magala as he had to walk back without managing to open his account.&nbsp;Pant, who has often been criticised for his poor shot selection, has since been facing criticism as India lost the game by just 4 runs after falling short in the run-chase.

Former India opener Gambhir shared his views on Pant's swashbuckling approach and said the left-hander will play many match-winning innings for India in the future but will also play rash shots like the one he did on Sunday as it is his natural style of batting. Gambhir said Pant's batting is not like someone like Virat Kohli and he will continue playing in the same attacking manner.

“You have to accept him the way he is. He will play match-winning innings but also play rash shots like today. If the management is patient to back a player like this, then we can see him getting more opportunities," Gambhir said on Star Sports.

"You live by the sword, you die by the sword. Pant will continue playing in the manner that he's currently playing. He's not someone like Virat Kohli, who will slowly build his innings. Yes, the team management can groom Pant to do that but it won't happen overnight... it will take time," he added.

Pant's dismissal cost India big time as the middle-order failed to deliver once again. Suryakumar Yadav (39) and Shreyas Iyer (26) played two crucial knocks but failed to stay in the middle for long which led to the tail-enders getting exposed against the South African pacers.

Nonetheless, Deepak Chahar produced a sensational cameo of 34-ball 54 to keep India in the game till the end. He was dismissed in the 48th over with India needing only ten runs to win but South African bowlers managed to keep their nerves and pulled off a close win to clinch the series 3-0.

The Lucknow franchise, which is all set to be one of the two debutants in the Indian Premier League (IPL) this year, revealed their three draft picks ahead of the mega auction on Friday (January 21). The Lucknow IPL franchise has roped in India's limited-overs vice-captain KL Rahul along with Australian all-rounder Marcus Stoinis and young Indian spinner Ravi Bishnoi as their three draft picks heading into the auction.

Rahul was the first pick of the franchise for a whopping sum of Rs 17 crore (INR 170 million), making him the joint-highest paid player in IPL history alongside Virat Kohli, who is part of the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) squad. Kohli had been retained by RCB for Rs 17 crore ahead of the IPL 2018 player auction.

While they have spent big on Rahul, who is also set to lead the team in their debut IPL season this year, the Lucknow franchise has roped in Stoinis for Rs 9.2 crore (INR 92 million) and Bishnoi for Rs 4 crore (INR 40 million). Both Rahul and Bishnoi were part of the Punjab Kings squad in IPL 2021 last year.

Explaining the reason behind Lucknow spending a big sum in securing the services of Rahul, former India opener Gautam Gambhir, who is going to be the mentor of the franchise, explained why the decision was a no-brainer. Gambhir said Rahul might be a work-in-progress as a captain but has been scoring runs consistently and also keeps wickets.

"He's a work in progress [as captain], he keeps, he opens the batting. He consistently has been a phenomenal run-scorer. And what's better than someone who gives you three things," said Gambhir speaking on Star Sports.

He also shared his views on the other two picks of the Lucknow franchise - Stoinis and Bishnoi. Talking about the Aussie all-rounder, Gambhir pointed out he is a great finisher and a good bowler while also being a great fielder which made him a package for the side. He stated that Bishnoi brought a unique dimension to their spin attack and is a long-term investment for the franchise.

"Marcus is a great finisher, a good bowler and a phenomenal fielder. Ravi brings a unique dimension to the spin department and is an exceptional fielder. We want players to be here for 3-4-5-6-7-8 years," said Gambhir.

Virat Kohli, on January 15, announced that he is stepping down as the Test captain. The decision came as a huge shock for the entire cricketing fraternity, given his impressive record as the skipper in the red-ball format. With him quitting as the Test captain, Kohli's overall captaincy tenure for the national side also came to an end.&nbsp;

In mid-September 2021, Kohli had announced that he would be stepping down as the T20I captain following the World Cup, in the UAE. Post the mega event, he was sacked as the ODI captain before quitting the top post in Test. As the 33-year-old Kohli will now look to play freely -- without additional responsibilities&nbsp;-- in India's upcoming assignments, former Indian opener-turned-commentator Gautam Gambhir opined on Kohli's captaincy tenure. He feels that while the red-ball team is in good health at the time of Kohli's captaincy resignation, he cannot say the same about the white-ball sides.

“Between the last Test and ODI series, the new space has been hogged by Virat resigning from Test captaincy. I think it is an individual’s call and that is how it should be treated. I think Virat left the Indian Test team in good health but I can’t say the same about white-ball cricket. Our bowling resources in Test matches are a neighbor’s envy and owner’s pride. They have shown time and again that they are the engine room for a team’s performance. In limited-overs cricket, I’d have liked to see a more settled middle-order which Virat couldn’t create,” Gambhir wrote in his column for&nbsp;Times of India.

“In my book, Rohit Sharma should lead India across formats with Rahul as his deputy. One captain across formats will ensure consistency in style and approach of the Indian team especially considering that we have another T20 World Cup later this year,” Gambhir asserted.

During the recently-held IPL General Council Meeting, the BCCI finalised the auction date, i.e. February 12 and 13, as the showpiece event took place in Bengaluru. On Saturday (January 15), Virat Kohli dropped a bomb by announcing his decision to step aside as the Test captain. In mid-September 2021, Kohli had revealed that the T20 World Cup would be his last assignment as captain in the shortest format whereas in early December, he was removed as the ODI skipper.

Thus, the forthcoming India-South Africa ODI series will see Kohli play solely as a batter&nbsp;given that he has been freed from captaincy duties altogether. As the 33-year-old superstar cricketer hasn't scored an international ton since late 2019, fans are eagerly waiting for King Kohli to return to his best and dominate from the word go, sans&nbsp;captaincy responsibilities.

Speaking about Kohli's new role in the white-ball series against Temba Bavuma-led South Africa, ex-Indian opener Gautam Gambhir gave legendary captain MS Dhoni a special mention and said on Star Sports, (on being asked about the changes fans can see in Kohli) "What new do you want to see? Captaincy is not anyone's birthright. People like MS Dhoni have given the captaincy baton to Virat Kohli, he has played under Virat Kohli as well. He has won three ICC trophies and four IPL trophies as well," Gambhir said.&nbsp;

"I think Kohli should look to score runs and that is more important. When you dream of playing for India, you don't dream to become a captain. You dream of winning games for India and nothing changes, except that you are not going out there to do the toss and set the field placement, but your energy and intensity should remain the same because it's an honor playing for the country," Gambhir added. &nbsp;

The India-SA ODIs will commence on January 19 at Paarl. In limited-overs captain Rohit Sharma's absence, due to hamstring injury, KL Rahul will lead the Kohli-starrer Team India in the forthcoming ODI series in the African nation.

In mid-September 2021, Kohli had revealed that the T20 World Cup would be his last assignment as captain in the shortest format whereas in early December, he was removed as the ODI skipper. Thus, the forthcoming India-South Africa ODI series will see Kohli play solely as a batter given that he has been freed from captaincy duties altogether. As the 33-year-old superstar cricketer hasn't scored an international ton since late 2019, fans are eagerly waiting for King Kohli to return to his best and dominate from the word go, sans captaincy responsibilities. Captaincy is not anyone's birthright. People like MS Dhoni have given the captaincy baton to Virat Kohli, he has played under Virat Kohli as well. He has won three ICC trophies and four IPL trophies as well," Gambhir said. When you dream of playing for India, you don't dream to become a captain. The India-SA ODIs will commence on January 19 at Paarl. In limited-overs captain Rohit Sharma's absence, due to hamstring injury, KL Rahul will lead the Kohli-starrer Team India in the forthcoming ODI series in the African nation.

Captaincy is not anyone's birthright: Gambhir hopes Virat Kohli can be at his dominant best in SA ODIs

India's Test captain Virat Kohli remains a livewire on the field when leading his side. He rarely shies away from getting into the nerves of the opposition and likes to give it back. Kohli was absolutely furious after a controversial DRS call went in South Africa's favour during Day 3 of the ongoing third Test between the two sides in Cape Town on Thursday.

Kohli lost his cool and directed a brutal dig towards the host broadcaster (SuperSport) after South Africa skipper Dean Elgar survived an LBW call. R Ashwin had trapped Elgar plumb and the ball hit him below his knee, however, the DRS&nbsp;hawk-eye predicted the ball to be going over the stumps.

Kohli along with the likes of Ashwin and KL Rahul aimed jibes at the host broadcaster after the decision saw Elgar survive. Many have criticised Kohli and the other Indian players for going overboard with their reaction, including former India opener Gautam Gambhir. Gambhir slammed Kohli for setting the wrong example with his behaviour.

Calling the Indian skipper 'immature', Gambhir said with such actions, Kohli can never become an idol for youngsters across the nation. “Kohli is very immature. It's worst for an Indian captain to say like this in stumps. By doing this you will never be an idol to youngsters," Gambhir said on Star Sports.

“In the first innings, you got a 50-50 call on caught behind then you were silent and in Mayank appeal too. I think Dravid will talk to him on this topic,” he added.

Kohli was visibly upset after Elgar's dismissal was overturned by the DRS before he walked up to the stumps to vent out his frustration. "Focus on your team while they shine the ball. Not just the opposition. Trying to catch people all the time,” he was heard saying on the stump-mic taking a dig at the official&nbsp;broadcaster.

Virat Kohli is very immature: Gautam Gambhir slams Indian skipper after stump-mic outburst in 3rd Test

Indian captain Virat Kohli produced a masterclass with the bat on Day 1 of the third and final Test between India and South Africa at Newlands, Cape Town on Tuesday (January 11). After the visitors won the toss and elected to bat first, the Indian openers KL Rahul and Mayank Agarwal got dismissed for cheap. The onus fell on Cheteshwar Pujara and Kohli before the former's dismissal saw the Test captain take full responsibility to take charge of the Indian innings.

Kohli scored his second slowest half-century in the red-ball format by leaving plenty of balls outside-off stump line whereas scored on the leg side. Though he was beaten on a number of occasions, the 33-year-old didn't get bogged down as seemed to have kept his ego aside, of going for the outside-off deliveries, to return with a gritty 79. Thus, former Indian opener-turned-commentator Gautam Gambhir lavished huge praise on Kohli for his batting performance.

"Virat has said many times that when you go to England, you should leave behind your ego in India. Today, Virat Kohli left behind his ego in the kit bag and this knock reminds me of his very successful tour of England, where he got beaten many times but left a lot of deliveries outside off-stump.

The former cricketer further asserted, "When you play in these conditions and against such bowlers on the first day, where there is help for the bowlers, you play in your shell at times although the South African bowlers did give him that opportunity." Along with that, his scoring areas might have been through the covers but he scored a lot of runs on his legs, which he has always done. So we saw a glimpse of the knocks he played in England."

Kohli has left behind his ego: Gambhir lauds Indian skipper's gritty 79-run knock on Day 1 of 3rd Test

Virat Kohli-led India have locked horns with South Africa in the third and final Test at Newlands, Cape Town on Tuesday (January 11). With the series interestingly poised at 1-1, there's all to play for both sides in the deciding encounter. While India won the toss and opted to bat first, the onus fell on KL Rahul and Mayank Agarwal. The two openers have been in form and were involved in a century-stand on Day 1 of the series opener, in Centurion, but failed to score big in the first innings.

Siraj misses out because of a niggle and Umesh comes in for him. Umesh has been very potent with the ball recently, very handy in the field and with the bat as well. India vs SA, 3rd Test: Rahul, Mayank move past Sehwag-Gambhir to attain unique feat among Indian openers

KL Rahul led India in the second Test against South Africa at The Wanderers in Johannesburg after Virat Kohli was ruled out of the game due to a back spasm. It was Rahul's debut Test as the captain of the Indian team as he failed to inspire the visitors to a victory against the Proteas. India lost the Test match by seven wickets after failing to defend the total of 239 runs during South Africa's second innings.

With the win, South Africa levelled the three-match series 1-1 making the final third Test a decider for both teams. Former India opener Gautam Gambhir reckoned India missed regular skipper Kohli in the second Test not just as a batter but also as a leader. Gambhir explained why batters like Kohli can't be replaced by anyone despite them undergoing a rough patch with the willow.

"We definitely missed Virat Kohli the batsman. Steve Smith, Joe Root, Kane Williamson, Rohit Sharma, these are the type of batters you miss. And it is difficult to find their replacement, no matter what form they are in, because the expectation remains that they will score those big runs," said Gambhir on Star Sports.

"But Kohli the captain, we missed him as well because he is so experienced and things turn simpler for experienced captains because they have been around for long,” he added.

In the series-opener, Kohli had failed to notch up big scores with the bat but was exceptional as a captain on the pitch as he powered the visitors to a thumping win to take a 1-0 lead in the series. Gambhir believes Rahul will need time to learn and should be a quick learner as Test cricket is not as easy as ODIs and T20Is.

"But KL Rahul, the more time he spends, the better he will learn, but the faster he learns the better it is. This is not like ODI or T20I captaincy, which is far easier because you don't have to focus much on-field placements. In Test cricket you need to buy the wickets, sometimes even gamble with your choices," said the former India opener.

'Difficult to find a replacement': Gambhir explains why India missed Kohli in Johannesburg Test against SA

Rishabh Pant departed for a three-ball duck on Day 3 of the second and penultimate Test between India and South Africa at The Wanderers, Johannesburg on Wednesday (January 5). Coming out to bat with India losing both their overnight batters -- Cheteshwar Pujara (53) and Ajinkya Rahane (58) -- Pant had to stitch a partnership with Hanuma Vihari as India's lead was still far away from going past the 200-run mark.

However, the swashbuckling left-hander Pant got involved in a heated exchange with Rassie van der Dussen before playing a poor shot (on his third delivery) off Kagiso Rabada to depart for a duck. The youngster danced down the track to take on Rabada, however, he managed an edge which was taken cleanly by the keeper. Hence, Pant's shot selection was slammed by many on-air, including Little Master Sunil Gavaskar.

After stumps on Day 3 of the J'burg Test, former Indian opener-turned-commentator Gautam Gambhir also slammed Pant. “It’s foolishness. Even if he (Rishabh Pant) had got a six off the ball, he shouldn’t have played the shot,” Gambhir said while speaking to&nbsp;Star Sports.

"Unbelievable, you will call that stupidity and not bravery. The way Rahane and Pujara got you back in this Test match, you have given it back to South Africa. This is not Test cricket. There is a very thin line to call yourself brave. If you had hit a six as well with that shot, you would still not have called that an excellent shot. Test cricket is all about handling pressure and you knew that Rabada was bowling his fourth or fifth over," Gambhir added.&nbsp;

It's foolishness, stupidity and not bravery: Gambhir slams Pant's shot selection on Day 3 of J'burg Test

Veteran Indian spinner Harbhajan Singh announced his retirement from all forms of cricket on Friday (December 24). The off-spinner last played for Team India in March 2016 and had since been plying his trade in the Indian Premier League (IPL). The 41-year-old took to Twitter on Saturday to announce his decision and thanked everyone who had a part to play in his 'beautiful journey'.
