Rohit Sharma will now be leading the Indian cricket team across white-ball formats after replacing Virat Kohli as the ODI skipper of the team earlier this week. Kohli, who had stepped down as the captain of India's T20 team in October this year, has now been replaced as ODI skipper as well ahead of the team's tour of South Africa. Kohli will continue to lead India in Tests.

Reacting to Rohit's appointment as ODI skipper of the Indian team, former India opener Gautam Gambhir heaped praise on the Hitman. Gambhir pointed out Rohit's brilliant captaincy credentials in the Indian Premier League (IPL) and said he must be doing something right as a captain to have been elevated to a leadership role in ODIs as well after T20Is.

Rohit has led Mumbai Indians to a record five titles in the Indian Premier League - the most by any captain in the history of the competition. Kohli, on the other hand, failed to win his maiden title with Royal Challengers Bangalore before stepping down as the captain of the side after the conclusion of IPL 2021 this year. Gambhir also praised Rohit for his ability to stay calm under pressure and not push his players too hard.

"Rohit Sharma has won 5 IPL titles as a captain, so he must be doing something right as compared to other captains and at the same time [the best thing about him is] his calmness and sometimes his laid back attitude as well, keeping things relaxed, at the same time not pushing players too hard," Gambhir said on Star Sports.

Gambhir spoke in the favour of having a separate captain in Tests and the two white-ball formats to keep things simple going forward. He explained how having both the ODI and T20I teams under him will help Rohit in grooming the white-ball players for both formats while Kohli can focus solely on Test cricket.

"Rohit himself is a chilled out character as well which actually helps the entire squad plus I think it's good for Indian cricket that now we have got two captains - one in white-ball cricket and one in red-ball cricket so Rohit will get enough time to groom white-ball cricket, whether it is the T20 format or ODI," said Gambhir.

"I feel that Rohit Sharma as a leader will definitely do well for Indian cricket, so Indian cricket is in very safe hands," he added.

Former India opener Gautam Gambhir recently named four players Chennai Super Kings (CSK) should retain ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) mega auction. November 30 (Tuesday) is the deadline for the existing eight franchises to submit their final list of retained players. A team can retain a maximum of only four players, with not more than three Indians or two overseas players as part of the final retained list.

Gambhir believes defending champions Chennai Super Kings should not retain captain MS Dhoni ahead of IPL 2022. He picked Ravindra Jadeja, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Faf du Plessis and Sam Curran as his for retentions for CSK while snubbing the likes of Dhoni and Moeen Ali. Dhoni is likely to be retained by CSK, as per multiple reports, having already confirmed that he will be playing the final T20 match of his career in Chennai.

Gambhir revealed his four picks four CSK while speaking on Star Sports. As per a report in ESPN Cricinfo, Dhoni, Jadeja, Gaikwad and Moeen are set to be the four players to be retained by CSK ahead of the much-anticipated mega auction which is all set to feature a host of superstars this time around.

Despite being in the final lap of his career and there being uncertainty over his long-term future in the IPL, CSK have reposed their faith in skipper Dhoni. The former India captain had retired from international cricket in 2019 but has continued to lead CSK in the IPL.

He led the Yellow Army to their fourth IPL title triumph in IPL 2021 as CSK completed an incredible comeback after having failed to qualify for the playoffs in IPL 2020. It remains to be seen who will be the final four retentions for CSK ahead of the mega auction this time around.

A franchise retaining four players will have to shell out Rs 42 crore (INR 420 million) from their total budget of Rs 90 crore (INR 900 million). There will be no Right To Match (RTM) option for the franchises in the mega auction this year which means they will have to be very wise in selecting their retentions.

Former Indian cricketer Gautam Gambhir has his say on the ex-head coach of the national men's team, Ravi Shastri, whose tenure ended after the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2021.

Shastri has been succeeded by former India captain Rahul Dravid, who took the charge during India's three-match T20I home series against New Zealand, which India won 3-0.

At the time of his departure as the head coach of India, Shastri hailed the players, including the support staff as he said that the Indian team during his tenure was "one of the great teams that have played the game". The statement didn't sit well with the cricketer-turned-politician Gautam Gambhir.

"When you win, let others talk about it. You won in Australia, that's a big achievement no doubt. You won in England, performed well, no doubt. But let others praise you. You won't hear such statements from Rahul Dravid. Whether India play good or bad, his statements will always remain balanced. 'Dravid's statements will always remain balanced': Gautam Gambhir's staunch criticism for Ravi Shastri

Former India opener Gautam Gambhir feels Ajinkya Rahane is quite fortunate to still be part of the Indian Test team ahead of the start of the home series against New Zealand. India registered a 3-0 clean sweep against the Kiwis in the just-concluded three-match T20I series on Sunday and the focus will now shift towards Tests.

Gambhir argued that Rahane, who has not been in great form of late, has managed to retain his spot in the Test squad only because he will be leading the team in the first Test against New Zealand. With skipper Virat Kohli skipping the series-opener, vice-captain Rahane will be in charge of the team.

Senior opener Rohit Sharma, who has taken over as T20I captain of Team India and led the side to a 3-0 clean sweep against the Black Caps, will also miss the Test series and take a break. Rohit was in line to captain the team in the longest format as well in Kohli's absence but will miss the two-match series that gets underway from Thursday.

Gambhir recently picked India's batting line-up for the first Test against New Zealand and said he will open with KL Rahul and Mayank Agarwal. He picked Shubman Gill to bat at no.4 with Rahane in the middle-order. Gambhir said the New Zealand series will be a chance for Rahane to cement his spot in the side.

"I am going to open with Mayank Agarwal and KL Rahul because he opened in England and then probably Shubman Gill will bat at No. 4," Gambhir said on Star Sports.

"That's what I would want to see and plus Rahane is pretty fortunate that he's still part of this side because he's leading... But again he's got another opportunity now, hopefully, he can make that count," he added.

Rahane was India's top-scorer in the World Test Championship's inaugural edition where he amassed 1159 runs in 18 matches at an average of over 42. However, he has only 109 runs to his name in his last four Test matches and has scored at an average of only 15.57.

"That's what I would want to see and plus Rahane is pretty fortunate that he's still part of this side because he's leading... But again he's got another opportunity now, hopefully, he can make that count," he added. Ajinkya Rahane is fortunate he is still in India's Test side: Gautam Gambhir ahead of New Zealand series

Former India opener Gautam Gambhir has slammed Kane Williamson-led New Zealand for their poor show in the final of the T20 World Cup 2021. Gambhir said the Kiwis were bullied by Australia in the summit clash at the Dubai International Stadium in Dubai on Sunday. New Zealand lost the final by eight wickets as Australia were crowned champions of the T20 World Cup 2021.

After losing the toss, New Zealand were asked to bat first in the final by Australia and got off to a stuttering start. However, captain Kane Williamson produced a stellar knock of 85 runs to help them post a challenging total of 172 runs on the board in 20 overs. Williamson's 48-ball 85 was laced with ten fours and three sixes.

New Zealand were expected to give a tough time to Australia in the run-chase but the Kiwi bowlers were taken to the cleaners by the Aussie duo of David Warner and Micthell Marsh. Warner scored 53 off 38 balls while Marsh remained unbeaten on 77 off 50 balls to help Australia dominate the run-chase and get over the line with seven balls to spare.

Disappointed by New Zealand's poor show, Gambhir said their performance was not worthy of a final. “My favourite side after India (for the T20 World Cup) was New Zealand. Seeing them bullied around like an apprentice wasn’t a pleasant experience,” Gambhir wrote in his column for Times of India.

“They batted very well to score 172 for four. More often than not this kind of score isn’t that tough to defend, especially with a balanced attack like that of New Zealand. But clearly, the occasion got to them as they didn’t look the same team that beat India or England in the semis.” he added.

Gambhir went on to state that he would have asked for a refund of his ticket had he been a New Zealand supporter, who attended the final in Dubai on Sunday.

“New Zealand is one team that prides itself on meticulous planning, clear role definitions, precise execution and all this without any fanfare…If I was a New Zealand supporter, I would have demanded a refund seeing my team all over the place in second half. It wasn’t a performance worthy of a final,” said the 2011 World Cup winner.

New Zealand completed a hat-trick of finals in major ICC events by entering the summit clash of the 2021 T20 World Cup but ended up on the losing side once again having lost the 2019 ODI World Cup final against England at the iconic Lord's Cricket Ground.

Australia brought an end to their six-year-long wait for a major ICC trophy as they lifted their maiden T20 World Cup title.

Former India opener Gautam Gambhir questioned David Warner for his unsportsmanlike act in the semi-final between Australia and Pakistan in the T20 World Cup 2021 on Thursday. Australia chased down the target of 177 runs with an over to spare to secure a spot in the final against New Zealand.

It was a reverting contest between the two teams with players from both sides under pressure. Warner's six off Mohammad Hafeez became one of the biggest talking points of the game as the ball had slipped out of the Pakistan spinner's hands before it was dispatched by the Aussie batter.

The incident happened in the eighth over of Australia's innings when the ball slipped out of Hafeez's hands and bounced twice before being hit for a six by Warner. The incident once again heated up the 'spirit of cricket' debate as many criticised Warner for going after the delivery despite knowing that the ball had slipped out of Hafeez's hands.

While Gambhir slammed Warner over his actions, he also targeted former Australian cricketers like Shane Warne and Ricky Ponting, who have been very vocal about the spirit of cricket in the past. Gambhir took to Twitter to share his views on Warner's act and also tagged Indian spinner R Ashwin asking him if the Aussie batter was right or wrong.

Ashwin had been targeted by the likes of Warne and Ashwin in the past over Mankading Jos Buttler in IPL 2019 before Warne slammed him yet again after his spat with Eoin Morgan during IPL 2021.

"What an absolutely pathetic display of spirit of the game by Warner! #Shameful What say @ashwinravi99?" - Gambhir wrote in a tweet. An Australian journalist responded to Gambhir's tweet and wrote - "Bad take Gautam".

Ashwin replied to the Aussie journo's tweet and explained Gambhir's point of view while possibly referring to his Mankading act in IPL 2019 and his spat with Morgan this year. "His point is that if this is right, that was right. If that was wrong, this is wrong too. Fair assessment?" - Ashwin wrote.

'Bad take', says Aussie journo as Gautam Gambhir slams David Warner, R Ashwin responds

Australia defeated Pakistan by five wickets in a high-pressure semi-final in the T20 World Cup 2021 on Thursday to secure a spot in the final. It was an entertaining encounter filled with drama as the two teams gave their all to set up a final date with New Zealand on Sunday. David Warner's six off Mohammad Hafeez's no-ball has become one of the major talking points from the game.

The ball slipped out of Hafeez's hands and bounced twice before Warner dispatched it for a six. Many have termed Warner's act as 'unsportsmanlike' as the Aussie batter went after the delivery despite knowing that the ball had slipped out of Hafeez's hands. The incident happened in the eighth over of Australia's run-chase.

The ball bounced twice on the pitch after slipping out of Hafeez's hands and was dispatched over deep mid-wicket for a six by Warner. It was adjudged a no-ball but the six was given as Pakistan players, including captain Babar Azam stood surprised. Warner's actions have once again started the 'spirit of cricket' debate on social media.

Former India opener Gautam Gambhir called out the likes of Shane Warne and Ricky Ponting as he reacted to Warner's act. Gambhir said Warne and Ponting always have a lot to say about the spirit of cricket but what have they got to say about Warner's actions?

"Shane Warne comments and tweets on everything. Even Ricky Ponting makes big, big claims about the spirit of the game. What have they got to say about this?" - Gambhir said speaking on Star Sports post Australia's win over Pakistan in the semi-final.

"When Ashwin does Mankad, they come up with big comments. Today, what has Shane Warne got to say about David Warner? Because it's easy to criticise someone but extremely difficult to criticise your own players," he added.

Where is Shane Warne now? Gautam Gambhir reacts to Warner's 'unsportsmanlike' act in T20 WC semi-final

India played their second game in the Super 12 round in the T20 World Cup 2021 edition against Kane Williamson-led New Zealand, on Sunday (October 31) at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium, Dubai. After losing their tournament-opener versus arch-rivals Pakistan by ten wickets, the Virat Kohli-led Men in Blue were expected to comeback in style and get off the mark in the points table.

However, nothing of that sort happened as Kohli & Co. lost their second game on the trot, by eight wickets versus the Black Caps. Being asked to bat first, India posted a below-par 110-7 in 20 overs. In reply, the Kiwis completed the run-chase with 33 balls in hand and pushed the one-time winners are on the brink of an early exit from the mega event.

While nothing has clicked for India in the two games in the T20 WC, many former cricketers and experts of the gentlemen's game has slammed the Kohli-led thinktank for their questionable changes in the playing XI versus New Zealand. Ishan Kishan came in place of injured Suryakumar Yadav and was asked to open as Rohit was demoted to No. 3 whereas Kohli also moved a spot below his usual position. Meanwhile, Bhuvneshwar Kumar was replaced by Shardul Thakur.

Many feel India pressed the panic button after one loss. Former Indian opener-turned-commentator Gautam Gambhir feels mentor MS Dhoni had no role behind the knee-jerk changes made by India in their playing XI versus the Kiwis. Gambhir has, meanwhile, slammed Kohli the strategist behind India's poor decision-making.

"Kohli has never impressed me as a strategist. Once again, he was a disappointment on Sunday. For starters, why did he change the team from the one that played against Pakistan? If that was not enough, he also changed the batting order and had Ishan Kishan open in place of Rohit. I have played long enough with MS Dhoni to know that he would have nothing to do with these knee-jerk changes just after one game. And what I also understand is that the other support staff hardly challenge Kohli's calls," Gambhir wrote in his coloumn for TOI.

"But the question is whether Sodhi and other New Zealanders bowled well or India batted below par. I am the first one to acknowledge opposition's supremacy but after seeing Kohli and his men play the way they did on Sunday, I'd say they made Sodhi and Co. looked better than they were. From a distance it seemed there was no clear planning, role allocation and proper assessment of the conditions. Clearly, they were searching for a mountain of a score. Lack of understanding of the pitch meant they were in pursuit of a score around 170-180. As a result, Indian batsmen kept hitting in the air like millionaires and folded for 110," Gambhir added.

India are in a must-win position in their remaining three games in the Super 12 round. In addition, they need other results to favour them in order to progress to the semi-finals of the mega event in the UAE. As of now, Kohli & Co. have their back against the wall and need to produce some scintillating performances to march their way back into the tournament.

'Played long enough with him...' - Gambhir feels Dhoni had no role behind India's knee-jerk changes vs NZ

Virat Kohli's leadership is once again under the scanner after India's back-to-back defeats in their first two matches of the ongoing T20 World Cup 2021. India lost their opening clash against arch-rivals Pakistan by ten wickets before succumbing to another shambolic eight-wicket defeat against New Zealand in Dubai on Sunday (October 31).

Kohli has already announced his decision to step down as the T20I captain of Team India post the T20 World Cup 2021. In what is going to be his final T20 tournament as the captain of the team, India have had a disastrous campaign so far and are on the brink of facing an early exit from the tournament after two losses in a row.

Former Indian opener has taken a dig at Kohli's captaincy and said showing emotions on the field, and reacting to everything doesn't mean someone is more passionate than others. Gambhir took a dig at Kohli's aggressive approach on the field and said sometimes calmness can be equally effective in a pressure situation.

"New Zealand was exactly in the same position as India today. So they had an equal amount of pressure. I mean, it starts with the leader as well. [For New Zealand] it starts with Kane, the calmness," Gambhir said on ESPNCricinfo.

"You don't have to be on the face all the time. You don't have to show your emotions [always], sometimes just your positivity and calmness can be equally positive [for] the group as well. Just by reacting to everything doesn't mean that you are more passionate than someone else," he added.

Asked to bat first in the all-important encounter against New Zealand, Indian batting line-up crumbled under pressure after a stuttering start. The move to let Ishan Kishan open the batting with KL Rahul and demote Rohit Sharma to number three backfired as Kishan was dismissed after scoring just 3 runs off 8 balls.

Rahul (18) and Rohit (14) too departed in quick succession while captain Kohli (9) struggled once again. It was crucial cameos from Hardik Pandya (23) and Ravindra Jadeja (26) that somehow helped India cross the 100-run mark and post 110 runs on the board in 20 overs.

New Zealand chased down the target of 111 runs with ease riding on Daryl Mitchell's 49 and captain Kane Willaimson's unbeaten 33. India have three games remaining in the Super 12 and have very bleak chance of making it to the top four after two consecutive losses.

Gautam Gambhir takes a dig at Virat Kohli: Reacting to everything doesn't mean you are more passionate

Former India opener Gautam Gambhir has slammed Team India after their crushing eight-wicket defeat in a must-win game against New Zealand in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2021 on Sunday (October 31). Gambhir feels Virat Kohli's team doesn't have the mental toughness to win big games and tournaments after they succumbed to their second successive defeat in two games at the T20 World Cup 2021.

India lost their opening game against arch-rivals Pakistan by ten wickets and were expected to bounce back to winning way and keep their playoffs hopes intact against New Zealand. However, the Men in blue suffered yet another batting collapse as they could only manage 110 runs in 20 overs, batting first in Dubai.

New Zealand chased down the target inside 14.3 overs while losing just two wickets to register a comprehensive victory and bag their first win in the tournament. The loss has heavily damaged India's chances of making it to the top four as the Kohli-led side will need a miracle from here to qualify for the knockout stage.

Kohli & Co. will have to win their remaining three matches by big margins to ensure they stand a chance of making it to the top four depending on other results too. Talking about India's woeful performance, Gambhir said the current Indian team has the skills but lacks the mental toughness that is required to win a big game.

"Yes talent is one thing, you've got all the skills and do really well in bilaterals and stuff. But when it comes to these kind of games and tournaments, this is when you have got to stand up and perform," said Gambhir on ESPN Cricinfo.

"This game was literally like a quarterfinal. The problem is with the mental toughness of the side. Suddenly when you know you have got to win the game and can't make mistakes, in bilaterals it's different because you can make mistakes there. But in these kind of games, I don't think India has got that mental strength," he added.

India have three matches remaining in the competition and another loss will confirm their early exit from the competition. The Men in Blue will have to win their remaining matches by handsome margins to ensure their net run rate can be improved and they stand a chance at qualifying.

This was India's 5th successive defeat against New Zealand in an ICC tournament and third in a row in the T20 World Cup. India have not won a game against New Zealand in an ICC event since 2003 and Gambhir feels India currently don't have the pedigree to turn up in major ICC tournaments.

"They have the skill and are a very dangerous side. But unfortunately, we can keep talking about it that we need to stand by our team when its not doing well but it's been a trend and its been happening for a very long time in most of these ICC tournaments, whether its the semifinals or the game today as well. When it mattered the most for someone to put his hand up, they just couldn't," Gambhir explained.

India lack mental toughness for big matches: Gautam Gambhir slams Virat Kohli & Co. after NZ debacle

Former India cricketer Gautam Gambhir has lashed out at people bursting crackers in the country after Virat Kohl-led Team India's loss against Pakistan in T20 World Cup 2021. India suffered their maiden defeat against Pakistan in a World Cup game as they went down by ten wickets at the Dubai International Stadium in Dubai on Sunday (October 24).

It was a comprehensive victory for Pakistan, who chased down the target of 152 runs without losing a single wicket with the help of an unbeaten stand from openers Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan. However, in the aftermath of Pakistan's win, reports of crackers being burst in different parts of India surfaced.

Some also took to social media to share videos of crackers being burst in different areas. Reacting to the incidents, Gambhir, who is a cricketer-turned-politician, said those celebrating Pakistan's win against India can't call themselves Indians while adding that it is absolutely unacceptable.

“It's shameful. You live in a country and are called an Indian but when another country wins or Pakistan wins, you start bursting crackers. This is absolutely unacceptable. People who have burst those crackers, cannot call themselves Indians,” Gambhir told India Today.

A section of tolls on social media has also targeted several Indian players after the team's loss against arch-rivals Pakistan in the T20 World Cup. Fast bowler Mohammed Shami and captain Virat Kohli are among the players who have been viciously abused on social media following India's ten-wicket defeat.

Condemning the attack on individuals, Gambhir said these are the same players who have won many games for the country and people should support them instead of abusing them to help spark a turnaround in the tournament.

“It is absolutely disgusting when you target an individual, whether he is the captain or someone who is from another community. Ultimately, it is a team, it is a nation. Players like Kohli and Shami have done fabulous things for the country, have won so many games for us, have made the country proud," Gambhir said.

“Targeting certain individuals in a team sport is not acceptable. In a nation like India, you win together, you lose together and that is what I want to say to every Indian. Support your players, they will definitely turn it around,” he added.

'They can't be Indians': Gautam Gambhir slams those bursting crackers after India's loss to Pakistan in T20 WC

India and Pakistan will face each other in the main draw of the T20 World Cup 2021 edition, in the UAE, on Sunday (October 24) in what will be both sides' tournament-opener as well. The stage is set for a blockbuster clash as the T20 format has an unpredictability factor attached to it. Hence, even though India have a 5-0 lead over the Men in Green, the Virat Kohli-led camp won't take Pakistan lightly.

Over the years, India and Pakistan have met each other only during multi-nation or ICC tournaments due to the political tension between the two countries. The neighbouring countries share a intense history; adding to the intensity during their match on the 22-yard cricket strip.

Ahead of the upcoming Indo-Pak contest, at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium, Dubai, here's reliving some heated exchanges and epic moments between players from both sides.

1) Kiran More vs Javed Miandad: During the 1992 ODI World Cup, India and Pakistan locked horns with each other for the first time in the tournament-history. As a result, the excitement was on another level at the iconic Sydney Cricket Ground, Sydney. During Pakistan's unsuccessful 217-run chase, More kept on chirping from behind the stumps; much to the dismay of Javed Miandad. Hence, the former Pakistani batsman started imitating More in the middle of the pitch.

While it wasn't a heated exchange, More got onto Miandad's nerves and the latter's imitation left everyone shellshocked.

2) Aamer Sohail vs Venkatesh Prasad: In the 1996 WC quarter-finals, India met the Men in Green at M Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru. India batted first and posted a daunting 287-8. In reply, Pakistan had over a 100 runs on board with the loss of a solitary wicket. Sohail was going bonkers and smashed Prasad for a four in the 15th over; signalling (with his bat) that he will continue to smack him to all parts of the ground. On the very next delivery, Prasad rattled Sohail's stumps to bring India back into the contest. Sohail-Prasad's heated exchange certainly made a lot of noise before India beat Pakistan by 39 runs.

Opting to bat first, Shahid Afridi-led Pakistan posted 267 all-out in 49.3 overs. In reply, India were alive in the clash courtesy half-centuries from Gautam Gambhir, Dhoni and vital knocks from the middle order. It came down to 10 required off 8 balls with Akhar bowling the penultimate over and Bhajji on strike. After the off-spinner missed a few deliveries, words were exchanged between the duo. The umpire had to intervene as both stood the ground before the final over, where Harbhajan's huge six took India to a thrilling 3-wicket win.

During the entire tournament, especially the UAE leg, the performance of players (who are part of the Indian squad) was monitored very closely. Among other players, all-rounder Hardik Pandya grabbed most of the attention. Pandya's chances of bowling during the World Cup looks dim after not bowling a single over during Mumbai Indians' disappointing IPL campaign. Cricket pundits have pointed it out several times, suggesting a rejig in the Indian squad. "There is a huge difference between bowling in the nets and against quality batsmen like Babar Azam and that too in the World Cup," Gambhir said. "He has to bowl in the practice matches and the nets, and he has to bowl 100 per cent. If you are thinking that you will come and bowl just at 115-120 kph, I will not take that risk," the World Cup-winning former opener added. While speaking on ESPN Cricinfo, Gambhir backed R Ashwin to replace Pant as the captain of the Delhi Capitals for IPL 2022. Gambhir said it might appear as a bizarre call but he would back Ashwin as the captain next season.

Virat Kohli's Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) once again fell short of winning their maiden IPL title as they bowed out of the 2021 edition by losing to Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the Eliminator, on Monday (October 11) at Sharjah Cricket Stadium, Sharjah.

After confirming a spot in the playoffs, with two games to spare in the league stage, RCB were beaten by KKR by four wickets, with two balls to spare, in the Eliminator as Sunil Narine's magnificent 4 for 21 and a belligerent 26 took his side home. Following RCB's exit, Kohli stepped down as the captain of the franchise; having already announced his decision at the start of the second and final leg in the UAE.

As a mega auction is scheduled to take place later this year, ahead of IPL 2022, many changes are expected in the RCB line-up as the team management will like to revamp and rebuild their squad with a new leader; in order to win their maiden title in the coming years.

"Yes, because I think they will retain Glenn Maxwell since he is the future, and AB de Villiers is not," said Gambhir on ESPNCricinfo on being asked if RCB could decide not to retain De Villiers.

"Yes, I would just want to add that between Harshal Patel and Chahal, one can be picked. So, it's up to them whether they want to pick either Chahal or Harshal," the two-time IPL-winning skipper stated when asked if Yuzvendra Chahal, Kohli and Glenn Maxwell will be Bengaluru's three retained players.

Gambhir also opined on Kohli's timing of stepping down as RCB captain. In this regard, he said, "I guess the timing wasn't right. If he had to quit as captain, he could have done that even after the tournament. He was in this situation, where it wasn’t like RCB was not in a position to qualify. They were pretty much in so I believe that had he resigned after the tournament, it would have been better."

'He's not the future' - Gautam Gambhir names 3 players RCB can retain ahead of IPL 2022 mega auction

The IPL 2021 edition is nearing its conclusion with only two games left. There have been various match-winners for the eight franchises in the ongoing season whereas several underrated and uncapped players have also made a mark, in the presence of some big-ticket players.

On the other hand, many marquee players also returned back to form in the 14th edition of the tournament, with the second and final leg being held in the UAE. From KL Rahul, Glenn Maxwell, Jasprit Bumrah, Avesh Khan, Harshal Patel, Yuzvendra Chahal, Faf du Plessis, Ruturaj Gaikwad, etc., many players have been top-performers and super consistent this season.

Thus, the former Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) captain Gautam Gambhir named his player of the tournament in IPL 14. Gambhir picked Royal Challengers Bangalore's (RCB) pacer Harshal Patel as his player of the ongoing edition, who ended the season with as many as 32 wickets.

In a chat with ESPNcricinfo, Gambhir said, "Look at Harshal Patel today; he bowled the fifth over which was probably the toughest after Garton went for 15-20 in the fourth over... He bowled the fifth over, and got the wicket. He bowled in the death, and got wickets. So he's done probably the toughest thing that RCB were expecting him to do, and he came out with flying colours. Irrespective of how many runs and wickets players will get, he's the player of the tournament for me already."

"It's unfortunate. He deserved to play in the final. He's been the standout performer for them... The way he has carried on the burden of death bowling for RCB, which has been a concern for so many years... he's literally handled that pressure single-handedly. Hats off to him, and he's had a fabulous, fabulous IPL," the left-hander further stated.

Rishabh Pant-led Delhi Capitals (DC) had the edge over MS Dhoni's Chennai Super Kings (CSK) when they squared off with each other in Qualifier 1 of the IPL 2021 playoffs on Sunday evening (October 10), at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium, Dubai.

Opting to bowl first, CSK managed to restrict DC to 172-5 riding as the one-time runners-up rode on half-centuries from Prithvi Shaw (60), Pant's 51 not out and Shimron Hetmyer's 37. In reply, CSK were oncourse for a win being well-placed at 113-1 courtesy a century-stand Ruturaj Gaikwad (70) and Robin Uthappa (63).

Nonetheless, Tom Curran's regular strikes in the 14th over, followed by Kagiso Rabada's tight 15th over, led to DC's comeback. While Anrich Nortje also gave away only 8 runs in the 16th over, DC missed the plot from thereon by not bowling Kagiso Rabada as the South African ended with 3-0-23-0.

“Avesh bowled the 17th, Nortje 18th, Rabada 19th, and Tom Curran 20th – that should have been the sequence. Going with Avesh for the 17th and 19th overs wasn’t the right decision. Yes. Rabada isn’t in the best of form, but you’ve got to back him to do the job as he’s playing continuously and he’s a world-class bowler,“ he added.

IPL 2021: After Gambhir-led KKR, CSK is where I have felt most secure, says Robin Uthappa

Former India opener and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) skipper Gautam Gambhir has aimed a sly dig at current KKR captain Eoin Morgan ahead of the start of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 playoffs. Gambhir called KKR's video analyst the 'captain' of the side and said it feels like captaincy is happening off the field when it comes to the Kolkata franchise this season.

Kolkata Knight Riders scripted a remarkable turnaround in the UAE leg of IPL 2021 to qualify for the playoffs. The Morgan-led side had managed only 2 wins in their first seven matches during the India leg of IPL 2021 and headed to UAE, needing at least five wins in their last seven matches to stand a chance at finishing in the top four.

KKR went on to win five out of their seven matches in the UAE leg, including comprehensive wins in their last two encounters to make it to the playoffs. They will be facing Virat Kohli's Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in the Eliminator on Monday (October 11). Ahead of the all-important game, Gambhir fires shots at Morgan while rating all four captains who have inspired their teams to playoffs this season.

"Morgan's point of view, I'm not sure because he doesn't captain, so it's the video analyst that captains the side. He only just looks at the video analyst, so I don't know whether he's the captain on the field or (if the) captaincy is happening off the field," said Gambhir on ESPN Cricinfo's show 'Runorder'.

The two-time IPL-winning captain picked Chennai Super Kings captain MS Dhoni as the best one among all four. Gambhir believes Dhoni can handle the pressure best and has been instrumental in his side's remarkable redemption from finishing 7th last season to becoming the first team to reach the playoffs in IPL 2021. CSK will be up against table-toppers Delhi Capitals in the first Qualifier on Sunday (October 10).

"Purely from the captaincy point of view who can handle the pressure best, probably has to be Dhoni. Rishabh has the advantage from a point of view that he's got a lot of experience in the playing XI. If Steve Smith plays, he's got him alongside. He has got Ravichandran Ashwin who has captained earlier as well... so for me Dhoni is No. 1 at the moment," Gambhir added.

CSK and DC will lock horns in Qualifier 1 at the Dubai Internationa Stadium in Dubai on Sunday with a place in the final on the line.

Video analyst captains KKR: Gautam Gambhir fires shots at Eoin Morgan ahead of IPL 2021 playoffs

Former India opener Gautam Gambhir believes Chennai Super Kings (CSK) should persist with senior batsman Robin Uthappa in the middle-order in the upcoming IPL 2021 playoffs. CSK will take on table-toppers Delhi Capitals (DC) in Qualifier 1 on Sunday (October 10). Ahead of the all-important game, Gambhir revealed his choice between Suresh Raina and Uthappa in the middle-order for CSK.

CSK's middle-order remains a huge concern for the Men in Yellow ahead of the playoffs. While captain MS Dhoni himself has struggled to score runs consistently, the likes of Raina and Uthappa haven't fired either. Raina was dropped from the playing XI in CSK's last two games against DC and Punjab Kings respectively as Uthappa took his place in the XI.

However, Uthappa too failed to impress and could only manage 21 runs in two outings for the Dhoni-led side. However, Gambhir believes CSK should pick Uthappa over Raina in the playing XI in the knockout stages. The former Kolkata Knight Riders skipper believes Uthappa will come good if he is persisted with.

"Uthappa. Although he hasn't grabbed his opportunities, I still believe you got to persist with Robin Uthappa and he will come good," said Gambhir.

However, former New Zealand and Royal Challengers Bangalore captain Daniel Vettori said he will continue to back Raina. Vettori believes Raina is an experienced campaigner and is used to the pressure of playing in big matches.

"I will always go to Raina. I think he is that sort of player who is used to these situations and big games and could come off in the pivotal moment," he said.

Raina has so far played 12 matches this season and has managed to score only 160 runs in what has been a disastrous campaign for CSK's highest run-getter in IPL history.

Suresh Raina or Robin Uthappa? Gautam Gambhir names batsman CSK should persist with in IPL 2021 playoffs

Rohit Sharma is an IPL legend. To date, he remains the most successful IPL skipper with as many as 5 trophies for the Mumbai Indians (MI). In addition, he has won the IPL championship on six occasions. While he is also one of the leading run-getters (third) in the all-time list, with 5,594 runs, the right-hander hasn't had a 600-run season so far.

For the unversed, Rohit has never managed to cross the 500-run mark in the IPL apart from the 2013 season, where he led MI to their maiden title. Former Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) captain Gautam Gambhir -- who is a huge fan of Hitman -- has opined on Rohit's IPL run and fails to understand how the swashbuckling opener hasn't crossed the 600-run mark in any IPL season.

Talking to EspnCricinfo, he said, "I don't understand why he never had that one big IPL season ever. And I have no reason to probably even defend him. He's a world-class player, I've always admired him, when he first busted onto the scene in international cricket. I said even then, that he's the best talent India has ever produced. And then proved himself in the int. stage but it just amazes me that when he wears that MI Jersey, he's never had a season like what VK or KL Rahul had - a 600 run season."

Meanwhile, Rohit-led MI have not yet been disqualified from the IPL 2021 edition. While they haven't been at their best in the second and final leg, in the UAE, the sixth-ranked side have a very slim chance of entering the playoffs. If they beat Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) by 170 runs, in match 55 of the season on Friday evening, they can topple KKR to enter the playoffs as the fourth-ranked side.

Match 53 of the IPL 2021 edition saw the MS Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings (CSK) lock horns with the KL Rahul-led Punjab Kings (PBKS) at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium, Dubai on Thursday evening (October 7). In what was the last league stage game for both the sides, the Rahul-led Punjab franchise thrashed CSK by 6 wickets, and 7 overs to spare, to sign off on a high.

At the time of the win, Punjab was still mathematically alive in the playoffs race, but have now officially bowed out of the current edition (post KKR's massive win over RR) with 12 points under their belt. Captain Rahul stood tall in PBKS' memorable win over CSK (who are set to now enter the playoffs), where he led from the front to finish off the 135-run chase in style. The stylish right-hander -- who has been in sublime form for Team India since the England ODIs early this year -- smashed a 42-ball 98*, laced with eight sixes and seven boundaries.

Seeing his range of strokes, ability to clear the ropes courtesy proper cricketing shots and to score in all parts of the ground, former Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) captain Gautam Gambhir has made a bold claim on Rahul.

“If you can bat like this, why don’t you bat like this? He probably has more ability than Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. I am not saying it just because I have seen KL Rahul doing it today, he just has it. He has got more shots than anyone else in India. And he showed that again,” Gambhir said on ESPNCricinfo.

Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) will take on Mumbai Indians (MI) in their final league game of the season in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 on Friday (October 08). Kane Williamson & Co. have already been eliminated from the race for playoffs and will be playing for pride against the defending champions, who are also all but out of the competition.

Ahead of the clash, talks of David Warner's potential return to the playing XI have intensified on social media. Fans have been requesting SRH to give Warner the farewell he deserves by including him in the playing XI for the final league game against MI. Warner has endured one of his worst IPL campaigns this season and has been left out of the playing XI by SRH after being sacked from captaincy.

Warner was sacked from captaincy during the first leg of the season in India before being dropped from the playing XI. He featured in the XI for SRH's first two games in the ongoing UAE leg before being dropped again. Warner has so far managed only 8 appearances this season and has managed to score only 195 runs.

Amid talks of Warner potentially making his comeback against Mumbai Indians on Friday to play his 'farewell' game for SRH, former India opener Gautam Gambhir has given his take on the matter. Gambhir said SRH's job is to win matches and not give farewell to players while stating that Warner should play if he fits in the best possible XI for SRH.

"See, a lot of great players didn't get farewells. We all know that even some legends didn't, although legend is a big word. I don't understand this system of farewells. Ultimately, you are playing to win the match. If your best playing XI includes him, then absolutely give him a chance. If not, then absolutely don't give him a chance. As simple as it gets. SunRisers' job is to win matches and not give farewells," Gambhir said on ESPN Cricinfo.

SRH's job is to win matches, not give farewells: Gautam Gambhir on David Warner's potential return against MI

MS Dhoni has been in terrible form in the IPL 2021 edition. While the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) skipper continues to read the game brilliantly and has led the side to the playoffs, the 40-year-old hasn't lived upto expectations with the bat. The superstar cricketer has amassed just 84 runs, at an average of 14 and strike-rate of 97.67.

Though his ardent fans can rightly point out that Dhoni has faced just 86 deliveries in IPL 2021, the CSK captain hasn't looked comfortable or anywhere near his best in terms of finding his rhythm and striking the ball with ease. Ahead of CSK's last league stage encounter, versus Punjab Kings (PBKS), and their playoffs journey, former Kolkata Knight Riders' (KKR) captain Gautam Gambhir opined on Dhoni's struggles and shared a word of advice for him.

Windies legend Ian Bishop also agreed with Gambhir in the same discussion and opined, "Yeah, Dhoni doesn't seem to be firing so there are other guys, certainly Ravindra Jadeja, that I would like to see get more batting opportunities. I think we've seen that over the course of this season, Dhoni doesn't seem like he'll recapture his form."

Dhoni came out to bat at No. 6 in CSK's previous game versus the Delhi Capitals (DC), in Dubai on Monday (October 4), and returned for an uninspiring 27-ball 18, with not even a single boundary. His below-par knock, at a strike-rate of 66.67, didn't help Chennai as they piled up a modest 136-5, riding on Ambati Rayudu's 55 not out. In response, DC chased down the total in the last over with 3 wickets in hand.

The Dhoni loyalists will, however, hope that the veteran batsman gets some time in the middle in the PBKS clash and regains his timing and power-hitting abilities before the three-time champions CSK head to the playoffs.

Virat Kohli-led Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) have already secured a berth in the IPL 2021 playoffs with an impressive performance throughout the season, though the team has had some ups and downs as well.

Now, former Indian batter Gautam Gambhir has opened up about RCB's run, especially Kohli's role and his natural playing style. He shed some upon how Kohli's game plan helped players like AB de Villiers and Glenn Maxwell to "accelerate" in the second half of the innings.

During his conversation with ESPNcricinfo, Gambhir said, "The reason is probably Glenn Maxwell and AB de Villiers. Virat Kohli feels that those two can actually accelerate in the second half of the innings as well, so he can play that anchor role which he has done really well whenever he has anchored the innings whether in 50 overs or T20 cricket and that's not his natural game either."

Gambhir reflected on how Virat is more successful when he opens the batting as he said, "So, that's the reason why he is more successful when he opens the batting so that he can use the first six overs and probably get the momentum on his side and continue batting after six overs and someone else from the other end can actually accelerate."

"But that's his natural game, but if goes out of his natural game, then it could be really hard for him to score a lot of runs because he doesn't have the same power or skill as De Villiers or for that matter, even Maxwell," Gambhir added.

For RCB, Maxwell's redemption has been the highlight of this edition of IPL. Whether it was the two-paced wicket in Dubai or the sluggish track in Sharjah, the Australian never looked at sea against the bowlers.

However, it is important to note that eyebrows were raised when RCB acquired the services of the Australian in the auction. Despite a forgetful IPL 2020 season, it is not fair to judge a player of Maxwell's stature on basis of one or two matches or a season.

Batting at No.5 for Punjab Kings, he could only muster 108 runs in 11 innings in the previous season. The 32-year-old, however, has turned a new leaf this season, demonstrating why he is still the best in the business. He has silenced the critics with several match-winning performances, amassing 407 runs in 11 innings.

"Strike rates are very overrated. You can expect Kohli to have a 600-run season but you can never expect Maxwell to have a 600-run season. But you can never-have Maxwell batting at a strike rate of 120-125 but can never expect Kohli to be batting at 160 strike rate. So, both those guys are different and it's just the combination of everyone which makes a very successful side," Gambhir concluded.

Virat Kohli feels that those two can actually accelerate in the second half of the innings as well, so he can play that anchor role which he has done really well whenever he has anchored the innings whether in 50 overs or T20 cricket and that's not his natural game either." 'The reason why he is more successful': Gautam Gambhir opens up on Virat Kohli's playing style

Mumbai Indians (MI) haven't been at their dominant best in IPL 2021. While they continue to remain alive in the race for the fourth playoffs spot, the Rohit Sharma-led MI camp have to pull up their socks if they wish to retain the trophy for the third time in a row.

One of the main reasons for MI not being in rollicking form is due to their star performers not being upto the mark, injury concerns and mainly their batsmen's inability to adapt to the slow and tricky surfaces in the UAE. In addition, Hardik Pandya's ordinary season, coupled with him not bowling at all in IPL 14, has added to MI's woes. Former Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) captain and Indian opener Gautam Gambhir has now slammed MI all-rounder Hardik for not choosing to bowl even in the second and final UAE leg despite the T20 World Cup set to commence soon after IPL.

Speaking to ESPNCricinfo, Gambhir stated, "The biggest upset in this batting lineup is Hardik Pandya. He hasn't played any cricket, he is just a one-format player for me now. He only plays white-ball cricket and hasn't delivered this year and he's got into the T20 World Cup side when he hasn't bowled either. So that's a huge surprise."

"Selectors will probably have to answer this whether he's actually going to bowl four overs in the World Cup and if he decides to do that, does he have those overs under him? If he decides to bowl in the World Cup he has to start bowling from now on, Whether it's one or two overs per game so that he can... deliver during the World Cup where India will be looking to win. But if he doesn't bowl during the World Cup, then it's actually pretty difficult for me to put him into the playing XI. If he doesn't bowl I don't think he can be a part of India's best playing XI," the ex-KKR skipper added.

Hardik hasn't been preferred in the longest format for long, in a bid to manage his workload and since he isn't willing to bowl long spells at the moment. However, he was expected to bowl some overs for the MI franchise in the final leg of IPL 14 to be able to prepare his body and mind for contributing with the ball for the Virat Kohli-led Men in Blue in the upcoming T20 WC, in the UAE from October 17.

Gambhir feels Hardik might not even find a place in India's XI if he remains a specialist batsman and doesn't play as an all-rounder. The 27-year-old, who was last seen bowling in the Sri Lanka series in July, will be looking forward to chip in with few overs in MI's last league stage encounter, versus Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) on Friday (October 8).

The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) made their way back to the IPL in the 2018 edition, after their two-year suspension on account of the infamous spot-fixing scandal. Since then, the MS Dhoni-led franchise have remained one of the most consistent sides -- like they were before the suspension -- but endured a forgettable campaign in IPL 2020. Nonetheless, the Yellow Army continue to be one of the most-followed IPL franchises to date. Since their return, they have added one more trophy to their cabinet (in 2018) and plethora of fans worldwide.

CSK also comprise plenty of match-winners in the form of Faf du Plessis, Shane Watson, Imran Tahir, Dwayne Bravo, Dhoni, Suresh Raina, Ravindra Jadeja, Deepak Chahar, Shadul Thakur, Ambati Rayudu, etc. Recently, former Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) skipper Gautam Gambhir picked CSK's standout player, since their return, among the plethora of talented and superstar cricketers the Dhoni-led franchise consist of.

Gambhir said on Star Sports, "I believe Ambati Rayudu has been the player of the franchise since he joined CSK. He scored runs when he opened or played at No.3 or No.4, he has delivered in whichever position he has played. It is very difficult when your batting order is being shuffled but despite that the way he bats. He had an impact when he used to open with Watson, today he is playing at No.4 and he has a similar impact. We might talk about Ravindra Jadeja, Suresh Raina and the others, but he has probably been the player of the franchise in the last three-four years," he opined.
