Former India opener Gautam Gambhir believes India can not win the T20 World Cup this year if they cannot beat Australia in the tournament. India cannot win the T20 World Cup if they do not beat Australia, says Gautam Gambhir

Former cricketers Gautam Gambhir and Mathew Hayden have brushed away the argument that Virat Kohli would be opening the innings in the upcoming T20I series against Australia and Men`s T20 World Cup, saying that the star batter should bat at No 3 for India in T20 cricket and there should not be any doubt that.

During the recently-concluded Asia Cup 2022, Kohli scored his maiden T20I century (122 not off 61 balls) which marked his resurgence to form.

Following a break from cricket, Virat had a brilliant Asia Cup where he emerged as the tournament`s second highest scorer and was in sublime touch. His form is a good sign for India ahead of the ICC Men`s T20 World Cup which is less than a month away.

The former India opener Gambhir said that he will expect the same fluency from Kohli in the T20I series against Australia, starting on September 20.

"Exactly the same fluency as what we saw in the Asia Cup. The only issue is, that when we saw him play that innings against Afghanistan it was at the top of the order. And in a T20 format, there is a huge difference in playing in the first six and after the first six. And when you go into the middle without having any scoreboard pressure, suddenly when you`re one wicket down or probably will have to continue the momentum so that`s a different ball game, but runs under your belt or no runs under your belt, there is no better feeling than scoring a hundred," Gambhir told Star Sports.

"And Virat goes into the series with a lot of confidence and I hope he continues his form because he is going to be very useful if India has to play well in the world cup because it`s a very important position," he added.

On the other hand, former Australia opener Hayden said that Kohli is a great player of fast bowling and also shut down any discussion on the Indian batter`s position in the team.

"Virat, you know, he`s such a great player of fast bowling, and Australia`s full of fast bowling in their cricket team and they are relying heavily on Adam Zampa through the middle stages now. Pointers to take pace off the ball, Mitch Marsh as well, he`ll handle him nicely," the 50-year-old said.

"And this great debate around Virat batting up, GG (Gambhir) and I have already had this over the last couple of days, there`s no way that he has to open the batting, he has to bat at number 3, simple as that. And again, it`s another one of those things that you don`t want to let the door open the discussion on this.

"You don`t want to have a doubt, you don`t want to have K.L Rahul in the masterful form that he`s been in of late and Rohit Sharma who is captain of the team thinking `I`ve got to kind of watch my spot here that you know I`m an opening batsman and my job is to play with freedom` and unfortunately, when you start having these debates and you start thinking `oh maybe he, for his game, it should be him opening`, I`m sure he wouldn`t want to entertain that and put pressure.

"The one thing that you want to alleviate in the World Cup is the pressure. Just let the batting order rely on its own form and Virat Kohli can handle the situation. He`s a world-class player, he can bat at three and he should bat at three in my opinion," he added.

Gambhir was in full support of Hayden`s argument, saying the confusion over Kohli`s batting order will put more pressure on other batters of the team.

"That`s a very valid point, the moment someone starts doing very well, for example, if Virat Kohli has got a hundred in the last game, we all start forgetting about what K.L Rahul and Rohit Sharma have done over such a long period of time. And suddenly when you start this debate about Virat Kohli opening the batting, imagine what happens to K.L Rahul, you don`t want your top-class players to be under pressure, especially someone like K.L Rahul, who`s got probably more ability than Rohit Sharma or Virat Kohli. And we have seen that in international cricket and the IPL as well," he said.

"Think from India`s point of view and not from an individual`s point of view. So that`s why I think you (Hayden) made a very valid point that we as experts and broadcasters should start thinking about how India can flourish in the World Cup rather than certain individuals who particularly want to bat at a certain number," he added.

Gautam Gambhir and Mathew Hayden call for Virat Kohli to come in to bat at No. 3 in upcoming T20I outings

Former India opener Gautam Gambhir believes no one would have survived for three years in the Indian crickt team without a century in international cricket. Gambhir believes Kohli got a long rope despite not scoring a hundred for over 1,000 days but no other batter would have earned that luxury.

Kohli, who brought an end to his long-standing century drought on Thursday, had scored his last ton for India in November 2019. He went without scoring a century for a staggering 1020 days between November 2019 to September 2022 before finnaly ending the drought with a stunning 122-run knock against Afghanistan in the Asia Cup 2022 earlier this week.

Kohli's lean patch with the willow saw him face crictisim from all corners in the build up to the Asia Cup with many also questioining his spot in the India's T20I squad. However, he had the continuous backing of the team management despite not delivering consistently.

Others wouldn't have survived: Gautam Gambhir on Virat Kohli being in Indian team for 3 years without a ton

Rohit Sharma's India lost to Pakistan by five wickets in a thrilling India-Pakistan Asia Cup clash in the Super Four clash on Sunday evening (September 04). Being asked to bat first, India rode on Virat Kohli's scintillating 44-ball 60 and other handy knocks from Rohit Sharma-KL Rahul along with some contributions from Rishabh Pant and Deepak Hooda to post 181-7 before Mohammad Rizwan (71) - Mohammad Nawaz (20-ball 42) and Asif Ali-Khusdil Shah's finishing cameos took Men in Green home on the penultimate ball of the contest at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium, Dubai.

While many blamed Arshdeep Singh for dropping a sitter in the 18th over of Pakistan's run-chase, some also pointed fingers at Bhuvneshwar Kumar's 19-run penultimate over whereas others slammed the poor shot selections from India's middle-order, comprising Suryakumar Yadav, Rishabh Pant and Hardik Pandya, for Rohit & Co.'s loss in the Super Four face-off. Former cricketers Gautam Gambhir and Wasim Akram also opined on the Indo-Pak battle and weren't impressed with Pant's shot selection.

"Rishabh Pant will be disappointed because that's not his shot, his shot is probably hit it over long-on or deep mid-wicket, you end up hitting over there and get out, absolutely you can take it because that's your strength. Your strength is not reverse-sweeping," Gambhir said in an interaction with Star Sports

"Especially, Gauti, at that stage of the game, there was no need to play that shot. I know he plays that shot in Test cricket, I know he is one of the top players in world cricket but in this stage of the game, that shot wasn't required," Akram mentioned during the same discussion.

Pant only managed a 12-ball 14, going for a reverse sweep off Shabad Khan's bowling before being caught by Asif.

Former India head coach Ravi Shastri also opined on Pant's dismissal and said, "Particularly after what he saw Rohit, Rahul and others were doing. Where were the runs coming? It was down the ground and in the V. It was a beautiful pitch, hats off to the groundsmen, the ball was skidding on to the bat. That's his strength, he can smack it. No boundary is big for Rishabh Pant if he connects it, but that's his area. Absolutely, right."

Your strength is not reverse-sweeping," Gambhir said in an interaction with Star Sports "Especially, Gauti, at that stage of the game, there was no need to play that shot. ALSO READ | Sunil Gavaskar 'surprised' with Rohit-led India's decision to not include Dinesh Karthik for Pakistan tie Former India head coach Ravi Shastri also opined on Pant's dismissal and said, "Particularly after what he saw Rohit, Rahul and others were doing. Where were the runs coming? It was down the ground and in the V. It was a beautiful pitch, hats off to the groundsmen, the ball was skidding on to the bat. That's his strength, he can smack it. No boundary is big for Rishabh Pant if he connects it, but that's his area. Absolutely, right." Pant will be eager to make a bigger contribution in India's remaining Super Four games, where they play Sri Lanka (September 06) and Afghanistan (September 08).

'Your strength is not...' - Gambhir, Akram criticise Pant for poor shot selection in Indo-Pak contest

Former India opener Gautam Gambhir believes Rohit Sharma & Co. enjoy a clear advantage over Pakistan ahead of the Super Four clash between the arch-rivals in the ongoing Asia Cup 2022 on Sunday (September 04). India had defeated Pakistan by five wickets in a thriller when the two teams earlier met in the tournament.

Hardik Pandya turned out to be the hero for India as an exceptional all-round performance from him saw the Men in Blue get the better of Pakistan in their opener in Dubai. After picking up a three-wicket haul to help India bundle out for 147 runs, Pandya played a match-winning knock of 17-ball 33 to take India over the line in a last-over humdinger.

Despite the last game being a cliffhanger, Gambhir believes India will be the favourites against Pakistan on Sunday considering the overall quality of their line-up. The former India opener feels Pandya can once again be the difference between the two sides when they meet in the all-important Super 4 clash.

“The first game was a cliffhanger. Hopefully, we're going to get many more games like that and I'm sure that India has got an advantage, just because we have got a better quality side from a batting and all-rounder point of view which we got Hardik Pandya. But I hope it's going to be a good game tomorrow,” Gambhir said on Star Sports.

Shahid Afridi's equation with Gautam Gambhir is well known to all in the cricketing fraternity. Gambhir-Afridi were involved in some heated exchanges during their playing days and the duo continue to take a dig at each other to date. Ahead of the Asia Cup 2022 clash between India and Pakistan, in Dubai on Sunday (August 28), Afridi made heads turn by claiming that 'no one in Team India likes Gautam Gambhir'.

Afridi's remark came during a talk show where news channels of both nations had collaborated. During the interaction, the ex-captain of the Men in Green recalled his on-field rivalry with Gambhir. Meanwhile, India's former spinner Harbhajan Singh was also part of the talk show. Afridi spoke to Aaj Tak being a part of the expert panel on the Pakistan's news channel - Samaa TV. During the discussion, Afridi said, "It's not like I have had a fight with any of the Indian players. Yes, sometimes there are some arguments with Gautam Gambhir on social media. Afridi claims 'no one in Team India likes Gautam Gambhir', Twitterati unimpressed with Harbhajan's reaction

Former India opener Gautam Gambhir said it was a massive surprise to see Rohit Sharma & Co. drop wicket-keeper batter Rishabh Pant for Dinesh Karthik in the high-profile clash against Pakistan in the Asia Cup 2022 on Sunday. Karthik, who has been absolutely sensational as a finisher of late, made his comeback for India earlier this year.

Many had written off 37-year-old Karthik, who last featured for India at the 2019 World Cup before making his comeback earlier this year. The veteran keeper-batter has been enjoying a stellar run with the willow and has been brilliant in the lower-middle order. He had earned a spot in India's squad for the ongoing Asia Cup courtesy of his recent finishing heroics.

However, Pant has been India's first-choice wicket-keeper batter in all three formats for a while now and was expected to be picked ahead of Karthik. His absence from the playing XI also deprived India of a left-hander in their top five against Pakistan which saw them promote Ravindra Jadeja to number 4.

Sharing his take on India's decision to pick Karthik ahead of Pant, a surprised Gambhir said the team should not experiment too much with a handful of T20 matches left ahead of the T20 World Cup 2022 in Australia later this year. Gambhir believes having Karthik over Pant makes India's batting line-up one-dimensional due to the lack of a left-hander.

"I won't experiment from now on because how many games do we have… this Asia Cup? And then you've got what… five more games, six more games and then the World Cup. From now on, you want a settled Playing XI. Yes, you can have your backups as well but that is the way I would have wanted. It is a bit of a surprise because Rishabh Pant has been an X-factor," Gambhir said on Star Sports.

"You need a left-handed in the middle order. India have a lot of right-handers there, which is one-dimensional. And he has done reasonably well. He can be someone who can open the game for you and he can be a floater as well. A bit surprising but I hope it is not long-term. I will still back Rishabh Pant ahead of Dinesh Karthik. It's a massive surprise," he added.

'Hope it's not long-term': Gautam Gambhir on India's decision to drop Pant for Karthik against Pakistan

Former India opener Gautam Gambhir has slammed senior batter Virat Kohli for his disappointing dismissal against Pakistan in the Asia Cup 2022 on Sunday (August 28). All eyes were on Kohli as he made his comeback for the Indian team after taking a short break following the conclusion of the team's tour of England last month.

Kohli, who made his 100th appearance for India in the game, contributed with a crucial knock of 35 runs as he helped India chase down the target of 148 runs with two balls to spare and seal a five-wicket win. While he looked in decent touch, Kohli once again failed to convert his start into a big score.

The under-fire batter, who had recently endured criticism from all corners over his poor form, looked in fine rhythm and played some brilliant strokes en route to his 35 off 34 balls. However, he would have been disappointed by the way he got dismissed after playing a poor shot.

Gambhir slammed Kohli for throwing his wicket away in quick succession after Indian skipper Rohit Sharma's departure. India got off to a shaky start in the 148-run chase as they lost opener KL Rahul on a duck in the very first over before Kohli and Rohit survived brilliant spells from Naseem Shah and Sahnawaz Dahani.

Kohli and Rohit added 49 runs for the second wicket after Rahul's early departure before the duo got out in a similar fashion, getting caught by Iftikhar Ahmed off the bowling of Mohammad Nawaz. Gambhir said Kohli would have been disappointed by the way he got out and should have played more sensibly after witnessing Rohit depart on the other end.

"He (Kohli) will be extremely disappointed because Rohit Sharma's wicket had just fallen and after that if you play a shot like that, it is good a youngster did not play that shot. There would have been a lot of criticism if a youngster had played that kind of shot," Gambhir said on Star Sports.

"I am sure the number of runs he has scored in international cricket. When he sees this shot he will tell himself that the shot was not required. You played 34 balls and scored 35 runs, your captain had just gotten out, if you had built your innings a little more, things might have become easier," he added.

It was a half-hearted attempt from Kohli, who tried to go for a lofted shot on a tossed-up delivery from Nawaz but his execution was far from perfect. The ball went straight into the hands of Iftikhar, marking the end of Kohli's innings. Gambhir said he would have been happy if Kohli got out trying to smack a six but his shot was a 'nothing shot'.

"It is T20 cricket, you think at times that you should back your instincts and you did that, but it is a frustrating shot because it was a nothing shot. If you were looking to hit a six and had gotten out, there is no problem with that, because you are trying to play a big shot," said Gambhir.

"Here neither did you try to hit a six nor did you find a gap. Literally, it was a nothing shot, probably that is why he will be even more disappointed," he added.

Nonetheless, Kohli's dismissal didn't cost India as Hardik Pandya's unbeaten 33 off 17 balls laced with 4 fours and a solitary six helped India get over the line comfortably in the thrilling last-over run-chase.

Also Read: 'You can't have a spinner bowling..': Pakistan legend Wasim Akram points out Babar Azam's mistake vs India It was a half-hearted attempt from Kohli, who tried to go for a lofted shot on a tossed-up delivery from Nawaz but his execution was far from perfect.

From Virat Kohli to Mirabai Chanu: Sporting icons wish countrymen on India's Independence Day

India and Pakistan are gearing up to resume their rivalry on the 22-yard cricket strip as both sides will meet each other in the upcoming Asia Cup 2022 edition. The forthcoming edition will be held in the UAE in the shortest format (for the second time in the tournament history) as India and Pakistan will play their respective opening game versus each other, in Dubai, on August 28.

There's a lot of hype regarding the upcoming India-Pakistan clash. Moreover, the upcoming Asia Cup season can see the two Asian giants clash with each other on as many as three occasions. India and Pakistan are very likely to meet in the Super Four round and can also end up locking horns in the summit clash, which will be the first-ever finale featuring both teams in the tournament history.

Ahead of the 2022 Asian championship, let us recall former Indian opener Gautam Gambhir and veteran Pakistan keeper-batter Kamran Akmal's ugly spat during the 2010 Asia Cup in Sri Lanka. In a tight contest, in Dambulla, Shahid Afridi-led Men in Green rode on Salman Butt's 74 and Kamran's 51 to post 267 all-out in 49.3 overs.

In reply, Gambhir's 83, then Indian skipper MS Dhoni's 56, Suresh Raina's 27-ball 34 and Harbhajan Singh's 11-ball 15 not out propelled India to a stunning three-wicket win.
Former Indian spinner Pragyan Ojha hailed MS Dhoni and mentioned that the ex-Indian captain was one of the main reasons behind Men in Blue's 2011 ODI World Cup triumph at home.
“I strongly feel that the reason the 2011 World Cup was a success for us was because MS Dhoni was very serious about all the guys who were going to be in the mix, the 25 or 30, needed to play at least 40 games before the World Cup started. You may have scored a lot of runs but if you don’t have the experience of dealing with various situations, you may not feel it during the league matches but the most important games, the knockouts, the semi-finals and the finals …. That is when that experience really helps you," Ojha said on FanCode.

'Salute to bravest of brave': Gambhir, Pant & others pay tribute to Indian Armed Forces on Kargil Vijay Diwas

Dinesh Karthik has made a remarkable comeback into the Indian team after the 2019 ODI World Cup. Many had written him off but the veteran keeper-batter produced a sensational performance with the bat for the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in IPL 2022 and, hence, earned a recall into the Indian T20I line-up.

Karthik, at 37, is part of the Rishabh Pant-led Indian squad for the ongoing South Africa home T20Is. While he faced only two balls and was unbeaten on 1 in the series opener, Karthik produced another gem of an innings as a finisher when he returned with a 21-ball 30* in the second T20I versus the Proteas in Cuttack on Sunday evening (June 12). Thus, he is now also performing for Team India as he remains in contention to feature in the national side's 2022 T20 World Cup squad.

However, former Indian opener-turned-commentator Gautam Gambhir feels Karthik will find it tough to retain his place once regulars such as KL Rahul, captain Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and others return.

Speaking on Star Sports' Match Point, Gambhir lauded DK's 2nd T20I heroics and said, "It was very valuable (the knock), he has been doing that for the last 2-3 months for RCB. But, I was a bit amazed that Axar came ahead of Dinesh Karthik. I would've been more happy if he had come ahead of Axar."

"Too early to say. T20 World Cup is far ahead. He needs to consistently perform till then but if he wants to bat only in the last three overs, things could get tough. India will definitely be looking at someone in the top 7 who can bowl and if Axar is batting at 7, the team would be a batter short," he opined.

"In such a case I would not have him (Karthik) in the World Cup Squad. I would definitely have people like Rishabh Pant, and Deepak Hooda (in the team). We have got KL Rahul, we've got Suryakumar Yadav, Rohit Sharma. Once they come back, it's going to be tough for Dinesh Karthik to find a place in the playing XI. If he doesn't have a place in the playing XI, there's no point giving him a place in the squad," Gambhir mentioned.

"Once KL, Rohit, Surya and Virat are back, I don't see him in the playing XI. This will be your top 4 and then you'll have someone like Hooda, Pant, Hardik, Jadeja. I will have a younger guy (in place of Karthik) who is a better fielder on those grounds and can probably chip in with a couple of overs as well. Karthik, unfortunately, will have to miss out unless and until the selectors make a huge call and drop one of the top four," the cricketer-turned-politician added.

Karthik, however, would want to continue performing for Team India in the remainder of the SA series to keep his World Cup dreams alive. On Tuesday evening (June 14), Pant & Co. will take on Temba Bavuma's South Africa in the third T20I to keep the series alive after conceding a 2-0 lead.

I would've been more happy if he had come ahead of Axar." "Too early to say. T20 World Cup is far ahead. He needs to consistently perform till then but if he wants to bat only in the last three overs, things could get tough. India will definitely be looking at someone in the top 7 who can bowl and if Axar is batting at 7, the team would be a batter short," he opined. ALSO READ | IND vs SA prediction: Who will win 3rd T20I between India and South Africa in Visakhapatnam "In such a case I would not have him (Karthik) in the World Cup Squad.

'I wouldn't have him in India's T20 World Cup squad' - Gautam Gambhir's take on star player's chances

Former India cricketer Gautam Gambhir came up with a befitting reply after he was asked about working in the Indian Premier League (IPL) despite being an acting MP (Member of Parliament). The cricketer-turned-politician is a Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) MP from the East Delhi constituency and has been working for the welfare of the people in his constituency by providing them with several facilities. However, Gambhir has often been questioned for juggling between politics and cricket.

Despite switching his career to politics and being an acting MP, Gambhir has not entirely stayed away from cricket. He has worked as a commentator and an expert in various tournaments in the past and was Lucknow Super Giants (LSG)'s mentor during the recently-concluded Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022.

During a press conference on BJP's 8 years in power in India, Gambhir was asked about his jobs in cricket despite being an active politician now. The former India cricketer came up with a befitting reply and pointed out how he feeds 5,000 people every month through his NGO in Delhi and has also set up a library worth Rs 25 lakh (INR 2.5 million) in his constituency.

Gambhir has set up a kitchen in Delhi's Gandhi Nagar where the poor and needy can get meals at the cost of just Rs 1. Thousands of people get affordable meals from his kitchen every month. Gambhir said he pays for all of it from his own pocket and is not ashamed of working despite being a politician.

“Why I commentate in IPL or work in it is because I spend INR 25 lakh (INR 2.5 million) every month to feed 5000 people. This translates to roughly 2.75 crore (INR 27.5 million) per year. I've also spent INR 25 lakh to build a library," Gambhir said during the press conference.

“I spend all of this money from my own pocket and not from the MPLAD fund. The MPLAD fund doesn't run my kitchen or other things that I do. I don't have a tree in my house from where I can pluck money either.

Only because I work, am I able to feed those 5000 people or establish that library. I have no shame in saying that I do commentary and work in the IPL. All of this that I do has an ultimate goal,” he added.

Gautam Gambhir on working in IPL despite being an MP: I feed 5,000 people every month from my own pocket

Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) suffered a humiliating 62-run defeat against Gujarat Titans (GT) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 on Tuesday (May 10). It was a disappointing batting performance from LSG as they were bundled out for a paltry 82 in pursuit of a target of 145 runs at the MCA Stadium in Pune.

With the help of some brilliant bowling from Avesh Khan and Mohsin Khan, Lucknow Super Giants had managed to stop Gujarat Titans on 144 runs in the first innings. KL Rahul & Co. were favourites ahead of the start of their run-chase and were expected to seal a comfortable win.

However, their batting line-up suffered a terrible collapse. The likes of skipper Rahul (8), Quinton de Kock (11), Krunal Pandya (5), Ayush Badoni (8) and Marcus Stoinis (2) all failed to deliver. Deepak Hooda top-scored with 27 runs off 26 balls but his efforts were not enough to take LSG home as they recorded their lowest total this season.

Following the conclusion of the game, LSG mentor Gautam Gambhir gave a passionate speech in the dressing room. Gambhir had some strong words for the Lucknow players and said it felt like they gave up against Gujarat Titans. The former India opener said there was nothing wrong in losing but a lot wrong in giving up.

"There is nothing wrong in losing. It is absolutely fine. One team has to win one team has to lose. But there is a lot wrong in giving up. Today I thought that we gave up and were weak," Gambhir can be heard saying in a video shared by Lucknow Super Giants on Instagram.

"And honestly, there is no place for being weak in a tournament like the IPL or in sport. That is where the problem is. We have beaten sides in this competition but I felt today we lacked the game sense, which was more important," he added.

However, they failed to register a win against Hardik Pandya's men to slip to the second spot with 16 points from 12 matches so far. LSG will be hoping to win their remaining two matches in the league stage and secure a spot in the top two to ensure they get two shots at qualifying for the final.

'We gave up & were weak': Gautam Gambhir delivers strong speech in dressing room after LSG lose to GT

Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) have enjoyed a terrific run so far in their debut campaign in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022. LSG were one of the two teams who are drafted in the competition this year and have had a brilliant tournament under captain KL Rahul and mentor Gautam Gambhir.

LSG got off to a losing start in the tournament as they suffered a defeat in their opening game against Gujarat Titans. However, they were quick to stage a comeback and won 8 out of their next ten matches in the competition. With 8 wins in 11 games so far, LSG were placed at the top of the IPL 2022 points table heading into the game against Gujarat Titans on Tuesday (May 10).

Both the debutants LSG and Gujarat Titans have 16 points each in the tournament so far and the winner of Tuesday's contest between the two will become the first team to make it to the playoffs this season. Ahead of his side's clash against Gujarat Titans, Gambhir explained the reason behind his side's success in IPL 2022.

The former India opener credited work done at the auction as the major reason behind the team's stellar run stating how 50% of the job was done at the auction table. But Gambhir also explained it's not just about getting the players in but also their performances on the field matter.

This is not an excuse as all the players are experienced," said Gambhir

Gambhir, who won two IPL titles as captain with his former IPL side Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) also gave an insight about the dressing room atmosphere at LSG and said there is no her worshipping in the squad. 'There is no hero worship': Gautam Gambhir explains reason behind Lucknow Super Giants' success in IPL 2022

IPL has been a huge hit over the years. The cash-rich league has become a big part of the cricketing calendar and every season is keenly awaited among the ardent cricket fans worldwide. There have been some big names who have led to IPL's resounding success over the years.

Along with the huge success, IPL has also seen some controversies unfold on the 22-yard cricket strip. There have been some heated exchanges among players from time to time. During IPL 2013, Virat Kohli -- the then Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) skipper -- had got involved in an ugly altercation with former Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) captain Gautam Gambhir when both sides had met at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru on April 11.

Riding on Gambhir's 46-ball 59, KKR set up a decent 155-run target on board for Kohli & Co. In reply, Chris Gayle's 85 off 50 balls and Kohli's 35 helped the hosts beat KKR by eight wickets with 15 balls to spare. However, Kohli was sledged after his dismissal, by L Balaji, and soon got involved in a heated exchange with Gambhir as the umpire and KKR players had to step in and interrupt. The altercation made headlines for the entire season.

Then KKR all-rounder Rajat Bhatia had also opened up on the altercation in 2020. "That is something which happened when two aggressive captains played and they always want to give their best and win for their respective teams. Even if they had any kind of collision in that match, it was just a part of the game,” Bhatia told Asianet Newsable.

“Later, I have never seen them (Gambhir and Kohli) fighting. In the heat of the moment, so many things happen. But, it shouldn’t be happening for the worse. And on that day, it was not,” he further added.

Right from his initial days in international cricket, Tendulkar was up against some of the best bowlers in the world and went on to prove his mettle against everyone. He dominated bowling attacks single-handedly and led India to numerous memorable wins across several major tournaments. Wishes have been pouring in from all corners for the Indian cricket legend on his 49th birthday. Several current and former cricketers took to social media to wish the Master Blaster. Virat Kohli led the wishes with an Instagram post for the batting legend. "Happy Birthday to one of the greatest. Have a good one Sachin paji," Kohli wrote wishing Tendulkar. BCCI secretary Jay Shah tweeted a special message for Tendulkar on his birthday as he credited the Indian cricket legend for uniting billions of fans around the world for their love of cricket. The likes of Gautam Gambhir, Yuvraj Singh, Suresh Raina and others also wished Tendulkar. The man who united billions: Virat Kohli, Gautam Gambhir lead wishes as Sachin Tendulkar turns 49

The 15th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) was keenly awaited. The excitement for each year's edition knows no boundaries. This time around, it went a level up as the ardent cricket fans welcomed the two debutant teams in the form of Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) and Gujarat Titans (GT) in the cash-rich league.

The BCCI decided to expand the league by adding two more teams with an aim to give more opportunities to youngsters, some big names who often got sidelined and fans plenty more to cheer for. While a nervy start was expected from both Gujarat and Lucknow in IPL 2022, the two teams have taken the 15th season by storm and have announced their arrivals with a bang. Both GT and LSG have been the giant killers of IPL 2022, surpassing some big teams and surprising many without breaking much sweat.

1) Team compositions

Complete squad of Gujarat Titans for IPL 2022:

Rahmanullah Gurbaz, Abhinav Sadarangani, David Miller, Wriddhiman Saha, Matthew Wade, Mohammed Shami, Lockie Ferguson, Noor Ahmad, R Sai Kishore, Yash Dayal, Alzarri Joseph, Pradeep Sangwan, Varun Aaron, Rahul Tewatia, Dominic Drakes, Jayant Yadav, Vijay Shankar, Darshan Nalkande, Gurkeerat Singh Mann, Sai Sudarshan

Complete squad of Lucknow Super Giants for IPL 2022

KL Rahul, Marcus Stoinis, Ravi Bishnoi, Quinton de Kock (wk), Manish Pandey, Manan Vohra, Evin Lewis, Jason Holder, Deepak Hooda, Krunal Pandya, K Gowtham, Ayush Badoni, Kyle Mayers, Karan Sharma, Mark Wood, Avesh Khan, Ankit Rajpoot, Dushmantha Chameera, Shahbaz Nadeem, Mohsin Khan, Mayank Yadav

Looking at both squads, it is safe to say that the newbies didn't get bogged down in the two-day mega auction, held in mid-February. With the leadership group being expanded in Team India, Hardik Pandya and KL Rahul have also put their best foot forward to showcase their credentials as GT and LSG skippers, respectively.

Deepak Hooda and Krunal Pandya had a major fallout while representing Baroda in the 2020/21 domestic season. It resulted in Deepak shifting base from Baroda to Rajasthan in the 2021/22 season. IPL 2022: Greenply and KL Rahul-led Lucknow Super Giants collaborate on a cricket cheer anthem

Match 12 of the IPL 2022 edition will see the one-time winners Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) take on the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) at the DY Patil Sports Academy, Mumbai on Monday evening (April 4). While the Hyderabad franchise have lots to ponder upon after a forgettable start to their campaign versus Rajasthan Royals (RR), the KL Rahul-led Lucknow team will look to build on their maiden win in their previous game, beating the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) by six wickets.

Talking about the last game of the Lucknow franchise, they came up against the defending champions Ravindra Jadeja-led CSK outfit. Asking them to bat first, Lucknow leaked runs at will and were set a tall 211-run target by the Yellow Army. However, Rahul's 26-ball 40, Quinton de Kock's 61, and fireworks from Evin Lewis (55 not out) and Ayush Badoni's 9-ball 19 propelled the new franchise to a memorable win. While their batters had a dream run versus Chennai, Avesh Khan-Andrew Tye were among the wickets despite being economical whereas Ravi Bishnoi was the star with the ball (4-0-24-2).

In his post, Yuvraj said he is proud to be a part of the 2011 World Cup-winning team and that the victory in the final was not just a win but it was also a dream of a billion Indians getting fulfilled. Chasing a target of 275 runs in the final, Gautam Gambhir (97) and captain MS Dhoni (91) played two fabulous knocks to help the Men in Blue bring an end to a 28-year-long wait for their second World Cup triumph. Recalling the famous World Cup win, which remains one of the greatest achievements of the Indian cricket team, Yuvraj wrote - "This wasn’t just a world cup victory - this was the dream of a billion Indians being fulfilled Proud to be a part of this team that wanted to win the cup for the entire country and for a very special person @sachintendulkar. Nothing can match the pride of wearing the tricolour and bringing glory to the nation." After both teams got off to a losing start, they were eager to get off the mark in the points table in the marquee face-off.

Rahul-led Lucknow won the toss and opted to bowl first. While they struggled to contain the run-flow, as CSK batters showed positive intent and went bonkers from the early stages of the innings, Lucknow batters joined the party and eventually guided the side to a stunning six-wicket win in pursuit of a mammoth 211-run target. Quinton de Kock's 61, Evin Lewis' 55 and Ayush Badoni's 9-ball 19* propelled LSG to their maiden win in IPL as CSK remain winless after two games in their title-defence season.

At the post-match presentation, a jubilant Rahul said, "He has a big heart and he is a fighter for a young boy. It shows the character to bounce back with the wet ball. He is someone who wants to grow and learn. He spends time with the spin coach. Credit for that should go to Vijay Dahiya and GG. They were the ones who wanted him. His batting has been phenomenal. Can bowl as well. Great find for Indian cricket. You can give yourself a couple of overs. If you get a couple of boundaries then it settles the nerves. We got the start we wanted for a big chase. I told him before the first game that he will be batting at three. Doesn't matter. Spinners or fast bowlers he knows one way. His timing has gotten a lot better. Great to see players coming in and winning games. Puts a smile on the captain's face."

Meanwhile, Jadeja opined, "We had a very good start, Robbie and Shivam Dube were playing brilliantly. We had a good start, but in the fielding, we have to take catches then you'll win matches. We should have taken those chances. There was a lot of dew, the ball wasn't sticking to the hand. Next time, we have to practise with the wet ball. We batted brilliantly in the top-six and in the middle-overs. The wicket was very good to bat on. As a bowling unit, we need to execute our plans."
