CWC 2023: BIG CLAIM! Gautam Gambhir makes 'century' prediction for Pakistan captain Babar Azam

Ex-India batter Gautam Gambhir is in awe of Babar Azam’s exceptional talent. A batter of supreme quality, Babar is a batter to look out for in the upcoming World Cup 2023, Gambhir reckons. Despite the likes of star Indian batters Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, alongside returning New Zealand captain and veteran Aussie opener David Warner, all looking strong to end CWC as top run-getters, Gambhir feels the Pakistan captain might edge everyone on the list, setting the marquee event on fire.

Speaking with Star Sports, Gambhir acknowledged Babar Azam’s unique ability to compete against the top bowlers in the toughest of conditions, saying, "Babar Azam has that every quality that he can set this World Cup on fire. I have seen very few players who have a lot of time to bat. I believe that there is Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Kane Williamson, Joe Root and David Warner, but Babar Azam has a different level of quality," Gambhir said on Star Sports.

Babar Azam has every quality to set World Cup 2023 on fire: Gautam Gambhir

Former India opener and 2011 World Cup winner Gautam Gambhir knows what it takes to lift the coveted trophy. Having tasted success at the top level during his decorated career, Gautam said for India to win the CWC this time, they would need to overcome the Aussie challenge for that.

Australia is the most successful team, having won five 50-over World Cups.

Although India defeated them by five wickets in the first of the three ODIs in this dress rehearsal series for the CWC, Gambhir warned the hosts of the mighty Australian side.

Speaking with Star Sports on Friday, Gambhir said despite Australia not being on the top of the rankings, discounting them in big tournaments, especially during the 50-over World Cups, would be the biggest mistake any team could make. Known to deliver on the bigger stages when it counts the most, Australia always enters the marquee events among the favourites.

Citing examples from the past, Gambhir admitted how India cashed in on the momentum and won the 50-over CWC for the first time since 1983 after beating Australia in the QFs of the 2011 edition.

"Look, I have always said this, and there is no doubt in this, that if you want to win the World Cup, then you have to beat Australia. In 2007, when we won the World Cup, we defeated Australia in the semifinal. In 2011, when we won the World Cup, we beat Australia in the quarterfinal. Australia is the strongest team in any ICC tournament. Remove the ranking, the ranking does not matter," Gambhir said on Star Sports.

Discount Aussies at your peril

Over the years, the Australian Team had several match-winners, making them the most daunting side to face in a mega event. Aware of what challenge the side from Down Under will pose, Gambhir warned India not to take them lightly, as they would remain the biggest threat during the CWC 2023.

"You can be in any position in the rankings, but Australia, when it comes to those big tournaments, the World Cups, I think Australia has got the players, they have got the self-belief, Australia has the ability to play those big moments really well.

“And you can see this, the two World Cups that India won, we had to beat Australia in the knockout stage two times. And the World Cups that we have lost, in 2015 we lost to Australia.”

“So, I believe that if we have to win the World Cup this year, Australia is going to be the most important game, and we start against Australia, so there is nothing better than that. So, beating Australia is very, very important," Gambhir added.

Meanwhile, the second ODI between India and Australia will take place on Sunday, September 24, in Indore.

Gautam Gambhir reveals India’s ultimate challenge at CWC 2023, picks THIS team as toughest opponent

Former India opening batsman Gautam Gambhir wants Shreyas Iyer replaced from India's OD World Cup squad. The comments from Gambhir come after Iyer, who returned to the ODI fold in the Asia Cup, could play just one game in the tournament before being sidelined due to a back spasm. While India managed to win the trophy, Iyer's injury is not ideal for the team ahead of the quadrennial tournament.

"It is a concern. You were out for such a lengthy time and then you return for the Asia Cup, play one match and then again become unfit. I don't think after this team management will pick up him for such a big tournament. You will see in the coming days that Iyer won't be part of the World Cup squad and someone will be replacing him. You should always go into a World Cup with fit players.

"Performance is a different thing. Imagine if a player suffers from a spasm or some other thing then you cannot find a replacement. So if Iyer hasn't been fit in this tournament then it is very difficult for him to be part of the World Cup because of his injury and then we don't even know how is form is presently. Whatever his form was, it was 7-8 months back after which he only played in one game. So it is unfortunate," Gambhir said during a conversation on Star Sports.

Apart from Iyer, KL Rahul and Jasprit Bumrah also returned to the side following an injury lay-off and did brilliantly well whenever picked up in the Playing XI. India skipper Rohit Sharma said after the Asia Cup final that Iyer is fit and will return to the side for the three-match ODI series against Australia which starts September 22.

India will also play two warm-up games after the Australia ODIs before starting their ODI World Cup campaign against Australia on October 8.

'Someone will be replacing him,' says Gautam Gambhir on Shreyas Iyer's ODI World Cup squad spot

India defeated Sri Lanka by 10 wickets in the Asia Cup final on Sunday (September 17) in Colombo to clinch their eighth title in the tournament history. Rohit Sharma-led India were asked to bowl first and rode on Mohammed Siraj's 6 for 21 to dismiss the islanders for 50 in 15.2 overs before chasing down the paltry total in 6.1 overs.

During their entire campaign, Team India were tested on several grounds before coming to their own in the summit clash. There were a lot of individual brilliance throughout the tournament for the Men in Blue, with the likes of Shubman Gill, Ishan Kishan, Hardik Pandya, Rohit, Virat Kohli, KL Rahul, Jasprit Bumrah, Siraj and Kuldeep Yadav doing well.

Talking about Ravindra Jadeja, the spin-bowling all-rounder also claimed six wickets but didn't do anything significant with the bat.

Ahead of the India-Australia home ODIs, which kicks off on Friday (September 22) in Mohali followed by CWC 2023, former Indian opener Gautam Gambhir opined that Jadeja will have to come good with the bat in the upcoming 50-over mega event.

Speaking to Star Sports, Gambhir -- the 2011 ODI World Cup winner -- said, "If Ishan Kishan plays at No. 5, there are question marks there as well. So Ravindra Jadeja will have to win matches with his batting ability because you might have a situation where you need 80 or 90 runs in 10 overs and the No. 6 and No. 7 batters might be playing together."

"Ravindra Jadeja has the ability but it is still debatable against top-quality bowling. The way he has contributed, no doubt he will fit in any playing XI, but India will be happy if Ravindra Jadeja is seen in good hitting form. There is a massive difference between good batting form and good hitting form," Gambhir further added.

Gambhir stressed that the ability to form partnerships down the order was something which was missing for India during Asia Cup 2023. Jadeja only managed 25 runs in three innings in the just-concluded continental tournament. Thus, he will be looking forward to the India-Australia ODIs to get some runs under his belt before the World Cup gets underway.

He will have to win matches with his batting ability: Gambhir wants Jadeja the batter to stand tall in CWC '23

MS Dhoni and Gautam Gambhir are India’s greatest match-winners in white-ball cricket. Having played together and winning two World Cups in 2007 (T20) and 2011 (ODI), both helped India gain enormous success at the top level.
“MS (Dhoni) was the first wicketkeeper of India who could change the game with his batting. Earlier, they were keepers first and batters later, but MS was batter first and then was a wicketkeeper,” Gambhir said in a show on Star Sports. “It was a blessing for Indian cricket that in MS Dhoni, we got a wicketkeeper-batter who can win you matches from No 7 because he had that power game,” Gambhir added.

“If MS would have batted at No 3, I am sure he could have broken several ODI records,” Gambhir said. “People always talk about MS Dhoni and his achievements as a captain, which is absolutely true. But I feel due to captaincy, he sacrificed the batter in him, and he could have achieved much more with his bat, which he didn’t. And this happens when you are a captain because then you put the team ahead, and you forget about yourself.”

“He started batting at No 6 or 7. If he had not been captain, he would have been India’s No. 3, and I think he could have scored more than what he has scored and could have scored more hundreds also. People always see MS with the trophies but in my opinion, he sacrificed his international runs for the team’s trophies,” the former India opener concluded.

MS Dhoni sacrificed his international runs for team’s success: Gautam Gambhir

On Tuesday (September 12), Rohit Sharma-led India beat Sri Lanka by 41 runs in a hard-fought low-scoring Super Four contest at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo, to book a spot in the Asia Cup 2023 final. Batting first, India rode on Rohit Sharma's 53, KL Rahul's 39 and Axar Patel's vital 26 to post a below-par 213 in 49.1 overs as Sri Lankan spin duo -- Dunith Wellalage and Charith Asalanka -- wreaked havoc with regular strikes. In reply, Indian bowlers combined to put up a spirited show to dismiss the Lankans for 172 in 41.3 overs.

Throughout the game, India were tested to the core. Their batters struggled versus the SL spinners on a tricky surface -- with a lot of spin and lateral movement on offer -- before they came out all guns blazing with the ball. Despite reducing the Islanders to 25 for 3, India had to overcome some tricky periods with the Lankans -- led by Dhananjaya de Silva (41) and Wellalge (42*) -- striving hard to stay alive in the contest. From 99 for 6, the hosts revamped at 162 for 6, courtesy of Dhananjaya-Wellalge's 63-run seventh-wicket stand, and it was their game to lose before the partnership was broken to end Sri Lanka's resistance.

After India's impressive win, former Indian opener-turned-commentator Gautam Gambhir lauded the overall team effort. He feels it was a more 'convincing' win for the Men in Blue than the one they achieved over Pakistan, where India won by 228 runs on Monday (September 11) in Colombo.

"This victory for me was more convincing than Pakistan. We won against Pakistan by 228 runs but this would give them a lot of confidence," Gambhir said on Star Sports.

Gambhir further added, "Defending 217 against Sri Lanka, they are a really good side playing against spin. This would give them a lot of confidence going into the final and then the World Cup. because the moment your Jasprit Bumrah and Kuldeep Yadav start firing, I think it gives a lot of confidence to the captain."

With the ball, Jasprit Bumrah (2 for 30) and Md Siraj (1 for 17) started really well before Ravindra Jadeja (2 for 33) and Kuldeep Yadav (4 for 43) led India to a hard-fought win to take the national side to the summit clash. Asia Cup: India's win vs Sri Lanka was more convincing than Pakistan, says former opener Gautam Gambhir

Veteran Indian off-spinner R Ashwin has lauded Ishan Kishan and hailed his versatility after the 25-year-old wicketkeeper-batter was named in India's 15-man squad for the 2023 ODI World Cup. Kishan pipped Tilak Varma and Sanju Samson to be included in the provisional squad along with keeper-batter KL Rahul. The young batter has been in solid form in the 50-over format with four successive half-centuries and confirmed his WC spot following a fine 82 versus Pakistan in India's Asia Cup 2023 opener, on September 02.

Speaking on Kishan, Ashwin said on his YouTube channel, "This is not a competition between Ishan Kishan and Sanju Samson, because Kishan fills so many roles. When you pick a 15-member squad, you need to pick a backup wicket-keeper. Even when we pick a Ranji Trophy squad, we pick two wicket-keepers."

The 36-year-old Ashwin further highlighted that Kishan can bat anywhere and being a left-hander, he will add more variety to the line-up. It is to be noted that India have two left-handers in the form of Kishan and Ravindra Jadeja among their main batters -- Kuldeep Yadav is also a left-hander down the order -- going into the mega event.

“Ishan Kishan is also a back-up opener along with being a back-up wicket-keeper, he is two-in-one player. Now that Ishan Kishan has succeeded at Number 5, it gives India two left-handers in the middle order. Everyone was going gaga over left-handers and they were saying Ishan Kishan cannot bat at No.5, but he has delivered now,” Ashwin added.

He's a two-in-one player: Ashwin lauds Kishan's versatility after batter included in India's CWC '23 squad

After BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar announced India's 15-man squad for the 2023 ODI World Cup, in India, former Indian opener Gautam Gambhir stated that he would prefer to have Ishan Kishan over KL Rahul in the playing XI for the marquee event. Kishan has been in top form, having scored four successive half-centuries, whereas Rahul is yet to get some match practice despite being named in the CWC squad. He will make his comeback in the Super Four round of the ongoing Asia Cup 2023, which will give a clear picture of his fitness going ahead.

Analysing the World Cup squad, Gambhir made his preference known by backing Kishan and said on Star Sports, "Tell me something, what is more important to win a championship — name or form? If Rohit (Sharma) or Virat (Kohli) had scored something similar (four consecutive fifties), would you still say that KL Rahul would replace them?" He further pointed out. "The point is, when you're gearing up to win the World Cup, you don't see the name, you judge by their form. You choose the player who can perform and win you the World Cup."

Gambhir added, "I feel Ishan Kishan has done everything he needs to do to be a frontrunner," he further added. "But if Virat Kohli or Rohit Sharma were in place of Ishan Kishan, would KL Rahul be able to replace them? The answer is 'no'."

Kishan is riding high on his impressive 82 in India's Asia Cup opener versus arch-rivals Pakistan on September 02 in Kandy. Coming to bat at No. 5, the left-hander stitched a handy 138-run fifth-wicket stand with Hardik Pandya (87) to take India to 265 all-out in 48.5 overs. Meanwhile, Rahul has been superb for India in the middle-order since early 2020. At No. 5, he averages a healthy 53 with 742 runs in 18 innings along with a ton and seven half-centuries.

It will be interesting to see India's team combination going forward, with both Kishan and Rahul's availability. After the CWC squad announcement, captain Rohit Sharma did not rule out playing both the keeper-batters together in the XI. At present, India is gearing up for its first game in the Super Four round of the Asia Cup, where they once again take on Pakistan on September 10 (Sunday) in Colombo.

'If Kohli or Rohit were...': Gambhir prefers Kishan over Rahul in India's XI after CWC '23 squad announcement

Former India batsman Gautam Gambhir, who was famous for having many confrontations on the ground, especially with Pakistan players, said that he's not in favour of on-field camaraderie between opposition players. Gambhir's comments came after Indian players were seen mingling with Pakistan players during the Asia Cup 2023 tie on Saturday, September 2 in Kandy, Sri Lanka.

Gambhir, now a Member of Parliament in India, was part of the mid-game show on Star Network. He also said that because of this 'bonding' shown by the players, the games nowadays don't have much aggression.

There has to be an aggression in the eyes of both sets of players. You can be as friendly as you want after those six or seven hours of cricket. Those hours are very important, because you’re not just representing yourself, you’re representing a nation of over a billion,” Gambhir said.

Asia Cup: Former India batsman Gautam Gambhir not in favour of FRIENDSHIP between players during match

Rohit Sharma-led India will start their campaign in the 50-over World Cup on October 08, in Chennai, when they play Australia. India is hosting the forthcoming ICC ODI World Cup 2023, which gets underway on October 05 in Ahmedabad. Rohit & Co. have a herculean task to end India's ten-year-long ICC title drought and replicate MS Dhoni-led India's historic run in the 2011 edition when they won the coveted title after 28 years.

Recently, former Indian opener Gautam Gambhir -- who played a pivotal role in Dhoni-led India's title run in 2011 -- schooled the social media users for being individual-obsessed as they don't give the entire Indian team enough credit for the championship win on home soil. During a freewheeling chat with RevSportz, Gambhir said, "Do we celebrate Yuvraj Singh enough for what he did in the 2011 World Cup with all the health concerns he had? Do we celebrate Zaheer Khan’s opening spell enough? To start off a World Cup final with four maiden overs is incredible, and yet he isn’t given enough credit."

"Do we celebrate Sachin Tendulkar’s efforts enough? Yes, we celebrate him and the win, but how many remember he was the highest scorer in the World Cup with two hundreds to his name? Do we celebrate Harbhajan Singh’s spell against Pakistan in Mohali, or Suresh Raina’s innings against Australia in Ahmedabad and Pakistan in Mohali? Both these innings were match-winning efforts," Gambhir further stated.

'While we celebrate MS Dhoni’s innings, we should celebrate these other efforts too'

Gambhir schooled the social media fans and pointed out their individual obsession and added, "While we celebrate MS Dhoni’s innings in the final, we should celebrate these other efforts as much. Not one innings could win India the trophy. It was a collective effort, and should be celebrated as such. It is because of social media that we don’t do it. Social media is biased and we all know that."

"But social media doesn’t make it the truth. There is always a tendency on social media to celebrate individuals more than the team. In doing so, what happens is we don’t celebrate key performers who had as much a part to play. And that’s an issue for sure. All I will say is we should celebrate the entire team. While we celebrate Dhoni, we should also celebrate the others who all played very important roles in the Indian win," he concluded.

Talking about the CWC '11 edition, India beat teams such as Australia, Pakistan, West Indies, Sri Lanka (in the final), etc. to win the championship at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai on April 02. Tendulkar, Sehwag, Gambhir, Yuvraj (Player-of-the-Series), Virat Kohli and Raina played a solid part with the bat whereas Zaheer Khan, R Ashwin, Munaf Patel, Ashish Nehra, etc. also had an important part to play with the ball. Dhoni, who struggled throughout the tournament with the bat, saved his best for the summit clash as he came up with a match-winning 91 not out in India's chase of 272 versus the Islanders.

Gambhir recalls Dhoni's CWC '11 final knock, schools social media users for being individual-obsessed

One of the biggest match-winners in cricket, Gautam Gambhir, has backed the growth of the T10 format and what it brings to the table. A two-time World Cup winner with India (T20 in 2007 and 50-over in 2011), Gambhir feels this newest addition to the list is challenging for both batters and bowlers but is exciting.

The left-hander batter is now playing for New Jersey Triton's in the maiden edition of the US Masters T10 tournament in Florida, USA, after having found success at all formats at the international level.

A former Kolkata Knight Riders captain in the IPL and a two-time winner with the same franchise, Gambhir feels this format brings excitement and has it in it to attract more fans towards this game in the USA.

Speaking to the media recently, Gambhir heaped praises on the T10 format, saying,

“The T10 format is a really good one and quite challenging as well. It is a very exciting format, and hopefully, this tournament will help bring in more fans for the sport in the USA,” Gambhir said, as quoted by News18.

“I think the shorter the format, you’ve got more opportunity, especially with the bowlers because you know the batter is going to look to hit you every ball. So, there will always be an opportunity. But for the batters obviously going to be difficult because it’s about going out there and hitting it from ball one. So, which is sometimes not easy,” Gambhir explains.

T10 is for the upcoming teams

With the rise of franchise-based T20 cricket leagues and the emergence of the T10 format in some parts of the world, Gambhir feels the associate nations are playing too much of this format, which will benefit them in the long run.

“A lot of the associate nations do play a lot of white ball cricket, so obviously it will help them develop new shots as batters, which has happened a bit in T20, but you might get to see more of it in the T10,” he added.

Meanwhile, under Gautam Gambhir’s captaincy, New Jersey Triton's is sitting in a comfortable position to make it to the next round of the tournament.

Though GG is yet to fire with the bat, his team has won two out of four matches and is placed third on the points table.

On Monday (August 21), the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced a strong 17-man squad for Team India's campaign in the forthcoming Asia Cup. The squad includes KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer as the duo mark their return after a long injury layoff. Rahul got injured during IPL 2023, where he was leading the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) and Iyer got ruled out during the middle of 2022/23 Border-Gavaskar Trophy at home, early this year. Rahul suffered a thigh injury whereas Iyer's back issues resurfaced.

Thus, Iyer and Rahul were badly missed by the Indian team management as the Rohit Sharma-Rahul Dravid-led national side tried several players in the middle order to fill the void created by the the two. With India preparing hard for the home ODI World Cup, set to kick off on October 5, the Men in Blue will be relieved to see the return of Iyer and Rahul for the continental tournament, which commences on August 30. The two will be eager to make the most of the opportunities with only a handful of games left before India's ODI WC opener, on October 8.

After Iyer and Rahul's return, former Indian opener Gautam Gambhir reacted to the development and believes the two have to perform if they want to start in the playing XI in India's World Cup opener, where they face Australia in Chennai.

'It’s great to have Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul back, but they will need to perform'

Gambhir said on Star Sports, "One thing is clear; there is no front runner for a position when you are trying to win the World Cup. Form and impact are important. The players who are in form need to be picked, rather than those who are not. Let it be Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul, or anybody. If Tilak Varma is in better form than someone, if Suryakumar Yadav is in better form than Shreyas Iyer or KL Rahul or Ishan Kishan, then you need to start that player. Because the World Cup comes once in four years, you don’t go and see who is a front runner or not. Who is in the best form after the Asia Cup and the Australia series, just as Rohit Sharma had said, there is no guarantee for anybody’s position. It’s great to have Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul back from injury, but they will need to perform if they want to get in the starting lineup of the squad."

He added, “I will only look at the form, not the name. Because if you want to win the World Cup, only form and impact from the players will help you win. A good thing the selectors have done is picked Suryakumar Yadav in the team. Because Suryakumar Yadav may not have the consistency, but he has the impact, and the team management should find the most efficient way to use him. So, in my opinion, whether it’s KL Rahul or Shreyas Iyer or anybody, we will look at their form after the Asia Cup and which team plays in the Australia series. That series will determine who plays in the World Cup rather than deciding after the series is over, that who will play in the World Cup. Because there should be a series before the World Cup where your main squad plays together.”

Great to have them back but they need to perform: Gambhir on Rahul, Iyer's comeback for Asia Cup

Former India player and World Cup winner Gautam Gambhir has backed young Indian opener Yashasvi Jaiswal for future success after a bright start to his international career. Jaiswal has hit the ground running at the international level having scored a hundred in his debut innings against West Indies in the first Test match. According to Gambhir, the Indian Premier League (IPL) was just a small stage for him as he predicts him to have a bright future.

Gambhir backs Jaiswal

"In India, the issue is that we take the 2 months of IPL so seriously that whoever does well we add him to the Indian team. Jaiswal has scored a double hundred in domestic cricket both in First Class and One-Day matches," Gambhir said about the talented Rajasthan Royals (RR) batter.

The Mumbai batter has been in excellent form for the last couple of years and has scored a hundred for India and RR while also registering the fastest fifty in IPL history. He has also scored a double hundred in the domestic circuit as he continues to impress the selectors.

Jaiswal has taken the international stage by storm as he backed his hundred in Dominica with a fifty in Port of Spain. Interestingly, his arrival has pushed Shubman Gill down the batting order and looks to have thrown a stern warning to KL Rahul, who is out of the Indian team due to injury.

Jaiswal has already built good chemistry with skipper Rohit Sharma with two hundred-run partnerships. In the first Test, both Rohit and Jaiswal put a stand of 229 runs for the opening wicket while they again repeated the trick in the second match with a 139-run stand in the first innings of the second Test match.

Gautam Gambhir backs THIS young star for future success, says 'IPL is merely the icing on the cake'

Mahendra Singh Dhoni, the captain of the 2011 World Cup winning team, celebrates his 42nd birthday on Friday, July 7. Dubbed the greatest white-ball leader ever, let alone in Indian cricket history, MS Dhoni tasted success in global events like none other.

He, to date, remains the only skipper in cricketer history to win all major white-ball events - including T20 World Cup (2007), 50-over World Cup (2011) and Champions Trophy (2013).

Under his leadership and a star-studded squad at the helm, India ended the 50-over World Cup drought, winning the final against Sri Lanka by six wickets at the Wankhede Stadium.

Chasing 275 against a potent Sri Lankan attack, India lost two wickets inside the Powerplay. While Virat Kohli and Gautam Gambhir steadied the innings with an 83-run stand for the third wicket, it was a match-winning partnership of 109 runs that saw India cross the winning line.

Though Gambhir ended with the highest score of 97 runs, it was an unbeaten 91 from the captain Cool, which sealed the deal for India.

Now, after 12 years, when India is again hosting the World Cup, the chips are high, and so is the expectation.

Meanwhile, several team members of the 2011 World Cup-winning team took to social media to send birthday greetings to their captain MS Dhoni on his 42nd birthday.

From openers Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag to MS Dhoni's partner Yuvraj Singh, from Dhoni's go-to-man Suresh Raina to match winners Harbhajan Singh and Munaf Patel, most of the 15-member squad wished MS Dhoni.

Here's how Class of 2011 World Cup-winning team wished captain MS Dhoni on his 42nd birthday

MS Dhoni remains the only international captain to have won all three ICC titles. During his captaincy, India became mentally strong in tough situations in multi-nation events, believed in taking the game deep, backed multi-dimensional players and emphasised on fielding. Dhoni took several memorable decisions as captain, which changed the course of Indian cricket, but some of his calls raised eyebrows.

During India's tour of Australia in 2011/12, they were whitewashed in the four Tests and had a poor run in the tri-series, also involving Sri Lanka, in early 2012. Back then, Dhoni introduced a rotational policy where he did not play India's top three -- Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir -- together before their must-win game versus the Lankans in Hobart.

As a result, India were not consistent and won only three out of eight matches. It is believed that Dhoni resorted to the rotational policy to accommodate Rohit Sharma in the line-up, keeping the 2015 ODI World Cup in mind (also held in Australia), along with having better fielders in the playing XI. Back in 2019, Gambhir recalled Dhoni's rotational policy and slammed it, calling it 'absolute crap'.

'It was absolute crap. If you make a decision, then back it'

Four years back, in an interview with Lallantop, Gambhir pointed out, "As far as the rotation policy goes, it was absolute crap and I’ve always maintained it. I have always believed that players are supposed to follow their captain’s decision but if you ask me, it was complete crap. If he believed in the rotation policy so much, then he should have stuck to it. He started with the rotation policy but played all three in the must-win games. If you make a decision, then back it."

“If you were preparing for the 2015 World Cup, then you shouldn’t have thought if you’re going to win this CV series or the one after this. It shouldn’t be like this. You began the policy but after four matches, when the results didn’t come, when questions began to be asked, then you start playing all three. That’s why I believe it was a complete waste of time If you play for your country, you should play your best team," the former batter added.

India's last game in the tri-series was against Sri Lanka, a must-win for them. Chasing a daunting 321, the Men in Blue had to pull off the run-chase in less than 40 overs to have any chance of qualifying for the finals. They rode on Sehwag-Sachin's blistering start, Gambhir's 64-ball 63, Virat Kohli's majestic 133 not out and Suresh Raina's unbeaten 24-ball 40 to win by seven wickets. However, they still could not feature in the best of three finals.

Australia defeated Sri Lanka, 2-1, in a best-of-three final to win the tournament Down Under.

THROWBACK | I told Dhoni it was crap: When Gambhir rejected his former skipper's rotational policy

Former India opener Gautam Gambhir is known for his blunt statements and remarks. The former batsman has come up with one more such statement where he said that Yuvraj Singh was the real hero of India's triumph in the 2007 T20 and 2011 World Cups instead of a 'certain individual' whose PR firm has made him famous.

“He (Yuvraj) always says I won the World Cup but I believe that the man who took us to the finals of the 2011 and 2007 World Cups was Yuvraj Singh, I think he was the man of the tournament in both tournaments,” Gambhir told to new outlet News18.

“I am not sure (Yuvraj did win Man of the Tournament in 2011, Shahid Afridi won it in the 2007 T20 World Cup). But it’s unfortunate that when we talk about the 2007 and 2011 World Cups, we don’t take Yuvraj Singh’s name. Why not? It’s only and only marketing and PR and portraying one individual as the biggest and everyone else as smaller than him,” Gambhir said.

Gambhir's mention of 'one individual' alludes to MS Dhoni who has been widely credited with the victory of India's two ICC silverware. Notably, it was Gambhir himself who was the highest individual scorer for India in the final of both World Cups. He scored 75 in the 2007 T20 WC against Pakistan and 97 in the 2011 ODI WC against Sri Lanka.

As for Yuvraj Singh, the southpaw had etched his name in history after hitting England's Stuart Broad for six sixes in an over in the 2007 WC. He had also scored a crucial 70 off just 30 balls in the semi-final against Australia. In the 2011 ODI World Cup, Singh won the Man of the Tournament award for his 362 runs and 15 wickets in the tournament.

“No one is underrated, it’s all PR and marketing. We have been told who won us the 2007 and 2011 World Cups [but] it was not one individual it was the entire team. No one individual can win a big tournament. If that was the case, India would’ve had 5-10 World Cups,” Gambhir further added.

IPL 2023: LSG's Twitter handle posts cryptic message for ousted RCB side following GT loss at Chinnaswamy

Lucknow Super Giants managed to beat Kolkata Knight Riders to secure a playoff berth but not before KKR's Rinku Singh gave them a scare. Needing 41 to win in the last two overs, KKR scored 39 off them, mostly by Rinku but fell short by one run.

The effort killed any doubts left about Rinku's ability as a batsman who finished at 67 not out off 33 balls in the match. Such was the dominance of his performance that even LSG mentor Gautam Gambhir could not stop himself from praising the young batsman.

What did Gambhir say?

After the match got over, Gambhir, from his official Twitter handle, tweeted, "What an effort by Rinku today! Sensational talent!," along with a photo where he can be seen chatting with Rinku Singh, KKR skipper Nitish Rana and young spinner Suyash Sharma. While KKR, despite the win, wouldn't have qualified for the playoffs, Rinku's fighting spirit made everyone stand and applaud. Have a look at Gamhir's tweet here:

Chasing 177, KKR looked comfortable when the openers were batting but wickets at regular intervals left 21 to chase from the last over with Rinku on non-strike. Vaibhav Arora took a single on the first ball, but Rinku couldn't connect on the first two balls he faced. Thanks to two wide balls by bowler Yash Thakur, KKR needed 18 of the last three balls.

IPL 2023: Gautam Gambhir praises 'SENSATIONAL' Rinku Singh for almost taking KKR home vs LSG

Match 63 of the IPL 2023 edition saw the Krunal Pandya-led Lucknow Supr Giants (LSG) beat Mumbai Indians (MI) by five runs in a crucial clash with the race for the playoffs getting intense with each passing game. Lucknow, who were asked to bat first, were off to a poor start as they were reduced to 12 for 2, and further to 35 for 3, before Aussie all-rounder Marcus Stoinis blasted an impressive 47-ball 89 not out to take his side to a competitive 177 for 3.

In reply, Rohit Sharma-led MI franchise were scoring briskly and their openers Ishan Kishan (59) and Hitman (37) added 90 runs for the first wicket before LSG bowlers -- spinners Ravi Bishnoi (2 for 26) and skipper Krunal (1 for 27) -- put a brake on the scoring rate and twin strikes from Yash Thakur and a brilliant last over from Mohsin Khan enabled LSG to a stunning five-run win in Lucknow.

During the game, Stoinis entertained the Lucknow fans with his big hits and even got a standing ovation from LSG mentor Gautam Gambhir for his onslaught versus the five-time champions. He tore apart Chris Jordan as he slammed the English pacer for 24 runs -- with three fours and two sixes -- to light up the atmosphere and earn applause from the LSG dugout.
You need to be careful, it's like you are flagged off. If you have that in your mindset...camera, and once the game is over, you will be fine. You can get a lot of brownie points using that camera,” said Shastri.

IPL 2023: Ravi Shastri wants Virat Kohli to be CAREFUL after recent spats with Gambhir and Ganguly

Match 45 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 edition saw the Krunal Pandya-led Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) host the Chennai Super Kings (CSK). It was a face-off between third-ranked Lucknow and fourth-positioned Chennai at a crucial juncture of the league stage, with as many as five teams -- ranging from second to sixth spots -- tied at ten points each. Rain played spoilsport as both teams shared a point each at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium, Lucknow on Wednesday (May 03).

At the coin toss, MS Dhoni called it right as CSK opted to bat first. During the toss, Danny Morrison asked Dhoni about his IPL future in a cheeky manner. The former cricketer-turned-commentator Morrison asked, “This wonderful swansong tour, your last, how are you enjoying it?" To this, the former Indian captain replied, "Well you have decided it’s my last". Dhoni's response went viral in no time and was met with a thunderous response at the venue.

IPL 2023: Updated points table after LSG-CSK face-off abandoned due to rain

MS Dhoni and Gautam Gambhir are modern-day legends of Indian cricket. Over the years, the two have been part of some glorious wins for Team India. The duo have been playing together for a long time, since their India A days, even before they became a regular for the senior team. While there have been the occasional differences in the past, with several reports of a rift between the two, they do share mutual respect for each other to date.

Recently, former Indian all-rounder Irfan Pathan recalled how Gambhir's on-field tactics against Dhoni rattled the latter a few years back in the IPL. During IPL 2016 and 2017, Dhoni was struggling for runs when he played for the now-defunct Rising Pune Supergiant (RPS). In IPL 2016, he led the Pune franchise and his side was on the mat, in match 45, after opting to bat first in their away game versus Gambhir's Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in Kolkata.

When Dhoni came out to bat, at 74-4, KKR skipper Gambhir brought in the likes of Shakib Al Hasan, Suryakumar Yadav and Yusuf Pathan in close-in positions and operated with his top spinners Sunil Narine and Piyush Chawla.

From 2016 onwards, Dhoni became susceptible against spin bowlers and, hence, Gambhir did use the same ploy in the following IPL season.

'Gambhir played with MS Dhoni's ego': Irfan recalls former KKR captain's famous field set in IPL 2016

Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) star Virat Kohli was seen involved in a heated exchange with former India teammate Gautam Gambhir in the Indian Premier League (IPL) contest against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG). The exchange took place on Monday, May 1 and as a consequence of the issue, both Gambhir and Kohli were fined 100 percent of their match fees. But why will Virat not pay the entire amount of the punishment?

What happened between Gambhir and Kohli?

Kohli was extra animated throughout the match with RCB making quick inroads into the LSG line-up while defending a paltry 126. The drama started in 17th over of the LSG's chase when Kohli got into a heated exchange with LSG's Naveen-ul-Haq.

Veteran spinner Amit Mishra, who was Naveen's batting partner at the time and an on-field umpire, had to intervene to calm both players down. The match was almost over by the time the verbal fight broke out between the two players with LSG needing 40 off the last three overs and just two wickets left, including one of injured skipper KL Rahul.

Both Kohli and Gambhir were then fined 100 percent of their match fees without any suspension.

What are the rules?

As things stand, any fine imposed on a player is not deducted directly from the player as the franchisee pays the amount at the end of the season, totaling all the offences throughout the campaign. The match fees acquired by the players are registered with the IPL governing council and thus a fine equivalent to their salary is imposed after being found guilty.

At the end of the season, the franchises have the right to deduct the amount from the player’s salary or not while they make the payments to the Board of Control for Cricket in India. Also if a team is eligible for certain prize money at the end of the campaign, the fine amount is deducted from it rather than the franchise making any payments.

So Virat who bags a whopping Rs 14 crore for a season won’t be paying the amount of fine directly with the decision in RCB’s hands to decide on whether to deduct it from his salary.

Virat will next take center stage on Saturday in his hometown of Delhi as RCB take on Delhi Capitals at the Arun Jaitley Stadium.

IPL 2023: Former India coach Ravi Shastri offers to mediate between Virat Kohli and Gautam Gambhir

Cricketers Virat Kohli and Gautam Gambhir got into a tussle after Bangalore won a IPL match against Lucknow. What was the fight about? Where is the spirit of sportsmanship? Molly Gambhir reports.

Gravitas: Ugly spat between Kohli & Gambhir during IPL match

Match 43 of IPL 2023 saw the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) host the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in Lucknow. In a low-scoring encounter, emotions were high among players from both camps as the RCB franchise, defending a measly total of 126 defeated Lucknow by 18 runs. LSG only managed 108 in 19.5 overs as their run-chase was dented with skipper KL Rahul getting injured in the first half. After the game, Kohli had a heated exchange with Lucknow pacer Naveen-ul-Haq and LSG mentor Gautam Gambhir.

There were some words exchanged between Naveen and Kohli towards the end of LSG's run-chase. The duo had a heated altercation after the game as well, during the customary handshake between both teams. Soon after, LSG opener Kyle Mayers had a chat with Kohli when Gambhir interrupted and took his team member away. After that, the former Indian opener aggressively marched towards Kohli. While Kohli seemed to be trying to pacify his former Indian teammate with his hand on Gambhir's shoulder, the chat soon turned hostile. Eventually, veteran spinner Amit Mishra and Rahul stepped in to separate them from each other.
