Match 15 of the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 edition saw Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) beat the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) by one wicket, on the final ball of a contest that went down to the wire. Opting to bowl, KL Rahul & Co. were in for the leather hunt courtesy of Virat Kohli's 61 (44), Faf du Plessis' 79* off 46 and Glenn Maxwell's 29-ball 59 as RCB posted a mammoth 212 for 2. In reply, LSG rode on fifties from Marcus Stoinis 65 (30) and Nicholas Pooran's 62 (19) to take their side home in a thrilling clash at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru.

The clash saw a 115-metre six, fifties from all the big hitters, a last-over finish, a hit-wicket, failed attempt at running the non-striker out for backing too far. There was sheer chaos at the iconic ground, in front of a jam-packed stadium, with emotions flying high among players and fans. Gautam Gambhir, LSG's team mentor, was at his aggressive best after his side's favourable result and even silenced the Chinnaswamy crowd with a finger-on-lips gesture. After the match, Gambhir even shared an intense handshake with Kohli but the duo shared a warm hug when they met each other in the dressing room.

Lucknow Super Giants clinched a nail-biting thriller against Royal Challengers Bangalore on Monday in Bengaluru as they chased down a record 213 on the the last ball of the match. LSG's Nicholas Pooran bludgeoned his way to a 19-ball 62, the joint second-fastest fifty of all-time in IPL history and the fastest this season.

The match saw high drama in last overs after Pooran got out. It was first LSG's Badoni who hit a six to almost win the game one over earlier than it actually got over but got out hit-wicket on the same ball. LSG tail-enders then kept their calm to win the game but not before a wicket, a MANKAD attempt and a last-ball bye.

Lucknow's mentor Gautam Gambhir, who is known for his aggressiveness, in a bold gesture, kept a finger on his lips after customary handshake with the RCB players. The gesture hinted at silencing the Bangalore crowd after they made their presence felt throughout the game. Have a look at the video here:

Stoinis then added 76 runs for the fourth wicket with skipper KL Rahul who departed for 18 as fifth wicket with Stoinis going down as fourth.

But Nicholas Pooran not only managed to keep LSG in hunt but almost took them home. By the time Pooran departed, LSG needed just 24 off 18. There were nerves but Gambhir's LSG eventually scampered to beat RCB in their backyard.

IPL 2023: Gautam Gambhir 'SILENCES' Bangalore fans after LSG clinch thriller vs RCB - WATCH

IPL 2023: 100-WIN CLUB! CSK, MI, RCB and two others feature in the elite list

India qualified for the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) final for the second time in a row early this month. As India have not won an ICC title since 2013, they will be desperate to break their ten-year drought during the upcoming WTC finale, versus Australia, at The Oval, London. The finale kicks off on June 07 and is expected to go down to the wire.

In 2021, India locked horns with New Zealand in the inaugural WTC final and lost by eight wickets with many blaming the then Virat Kohli-Ravi Shastri-led think tank for not choosing the ideal XI. Thus, Rohit Sharma-Rahul Dravid will be focused on choosing the right XI this time around as India look to win the elite championship. Ahead of the WTC summit clash, many feel it would be right to pick KL Rahul, who has been out of form in whites, for his good record in English conditions and he can also keep wickets. But some are of the opinion that KS Bharat remains the best bet behind the stumps in Rishabh Pant's absence.

While former cricketers Ravi Shastri and Sunil Gavaskar have backed Rahul as a wicketkeeper-batter for the WTC final, Rahul's IPL franchise Lucknow Super Giants (LSG)'s mentor and ex-Indian opener Gautam Gambhir feels Bharat should retain his place.

"You should always go with a specialist wicketkeeper. England is a tough place to keep, where you can’t go with a part-time wicketkeeper," Gambhir told Sports Tak. He added, "If you want to pick KL Rahul for the WTC final, then play him purely as a batsman."

Legends League Cricket: Gautam Gambhir gets hit on helmet, Shahid Afridi rushes to ask if he's okay - WATCH

The Indian batters have had their struggle in this ongoing Border-Gavaskar series. Barring Rohit Sharma, who stood out for his maiden hundred against Australia in Tests in the Nagpur game, none of the batters looked comfortable out there. Pin-pointing India’s visible weakness against spin, former opener Gautam Gambhir opined that had some of the star batters played domestic cricket in the lead up to this series, it would have benefited them.

While the top order hasn’t left the mark so far as they would have liked, bowling all-rounders in Axar Patel and Ravindra Jadeja compensated with their game-changing fifties coming lower down the order in the first two matches. Although Pujara shined with the bat in the second innings in Indore hitting a gritty fifty (59 off 142), that could also not help India as they lost the match by nine wickets inside three days.

Addressing the elephant in the room in regards to if some of the big names should have played Ranji Trophy matches instead of just attending net sessions before the start of this series, Gambhir said yes, not even 100% but 200%.

“Not 100 percent make that 200 percent. The Indian batters should have played a few Ranji Trophy matches ahead of the Test series against Australia. However, they shouldn't have played those matches just to prepare. It doesn't matter if you conduct 20-day camps or bat in the nets,” Gambhir told Sports Tak.

Though India had claimed the Border-Gavaskar trophy following wins in the opening two Tests, the hosts still haven’t punched their ticket for the finals of the World Test Championship. For them to seal the remaining spot, their batters must take the onus and deliver big in the ongoing final Test.

As things stand Australia are in the driver’s seat after the first day’s play in Ahmedabad with opener Usman Khawaja completing his first hundred on Indian soil. In absence of veteran David Warner, left-handed Khawaja led the charge and made the most of his chance. Returning young all-rounder Cameron Green also hit his maiden Test fifty on this tour.

Meanwhile, India currently lead the four-match Test series 2-1.

Top players must have played some Ranji games ahead of Australia series, says Gambhir on India's batting woes

Australia bounced back in style in the third and penultimate Test, of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, versus India to win by nine wickets and keep the series alive. However, the venue for the third Test received a lot of flak. The Holkar Stadium, Indore hosted the game which concluded in less than three days with Aussies winning in the morning session on Day 3; making the series scoreline 2-1 in India's favour with one game to go.

The Indore pitch became the talk of the town post the conclusion of the match. Recently, the International Cricket Council (ICC) gave a 'poor' rating to the pitch and many former cricketers and experts of the game shared their take on the surface, which spun considerably from Day 1, and now former Indian opener-turned-commentator Gautam Gambhir also joined the bandwagon.

While speaking to Sports Today, Gambhir said he doesn't appreciate Test matches finishing in 2.5 days. "I feel, yes, playing on turning tracks is fine, but I won't appreciate Test matches finishing in 2.5 days. We want to see tight finishes, like the one we saw in the New Zealand vs England Test. (If a Test goes to) 4th or 5th day, it is fine. But 2.5 days is too short," Gambhir said in a chat on Sports Today.

It is to be noted that none of the three Tests in the BGT 2022/23 have stretched till the fourth day. All the matches have concluded on the third day, either by first or second session.

Questions were also raised on Rohit Sharma-led India's ability to play spin after they fell for 109 and 163 in the Indore Test. However, Gambhir has backed Rohit-led Indian batters. "I don't think so. People like (Cheteshwar) Pujara, (Virat) Kohli, Rohit Sharma are good players of spin bowling. If they weren't, they won't have played in 100 Tests. You have to be very good player of spin and fast bowling to reach that mark. One thing that has changed is that the DRS has played a massive role," Gambhir added.

The fourth and penultimate Test begins tomorrow (on March 9) as India aim for WTC final qualification. Australia have already confirmed their spot with a famous win in Indore.

Also read: Big blow to Team India! BGT 2022/23: Won't appreciate Test matches finishing in 2.5 days, opines Gautam Gambhir

The Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) unveiled their new jersey for the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 edition, which kicks off in India on March 31. The KL Rahul-led side bowed out in the IPL 2022 Eliminator and will be eager to go the distance this time around in the forthcoming season. Ahead of the tournament opener, LSG mentor Gautam Gambhir was all praise for Rahul.

Rahul has been under-fire for his poor form of late. In Tests, he has only managed 192 runs in the last 12 innings and was left out of India's playing XI for the Indore Test versus Australia. He lost the ODI vice-captaincy post to Hardik Pandya in January 2023 and got sacked as Rohit's deputy in Tests as well. Amid severe criticism from all corners, Gambhir -- former Indian opener and two-time IPL winning captain (for Kolkata Knight Riders) -- said that Lucknow is 'very fortunate' to have Rahul as their captain.

In addition, Gambhir further stated that the right-hander has a stable and balanced head while accepting that he lacked such qualities during his playing days.

At LSG's jersey launch, Gambhir said, "It starts with the captain. The captain is the flag bearer of the team. It is the captain's team. All of us in the dressing room are there to support him. No support staff is under as much pressure as the captain. It is the body language of the captain that will decide how we perform."

"We are very fortunate to have someone like KL Rahul, who has a very stable and balanced head. I wish I had it, I did not have that. I was very extreme, but it did work for me. For a franchise like Lucknow, it is important to have someone like KL at the helm. Going forward, this is going to be a massive positive for us," Gambhir added.

Rahul is part of India's Test squad versus Australia with the final match starting on March 09 in Ahmedabad. He will also be seen in the three ODIs versus the Men in Yellow before taking charge of the LSG franchise in IPL 2023.

IPL 2023: Gambhir backs under-fire Rahul, says Lucknow Super Giants 'fortunate' to have him as captain

Gautam Gambhir, former Indian opener, has never shied away from expressing his views on various aspects of the modern-day game. Gambhir has been extremely vocal on his intense rivalry with several Pakistani players during his playing days.

Hence, Gambhir's mention is made on several occasions during former and active Pakistani players' interviews. During veteran pacer Sohail Khan's recent interaction with Nadir Ali on his YouTube channel, 'Nadir Ali Podcast', the anchor made a shockingly rude remark on Gambhir. The two were talking about Shoaib Akhtar's memorable spell for Kolkata Knight Riders versus Delhi Daredevils (now known as Delhi Capitals) in the inaugural IPL 2008 edition, where he took 4 for 11, when the anchor added Gambhir to the conversation.

Nidar termed Gambhir "Karele ka first cousin", referring to his "bitter" statement on Pakistan. In addition, he revealed that the former Indian cricketer had said that his country should never have any series against Pakistan. To this, Sohail seemed shocked and said, "He speaks against Pakistan?" before he added, "Woh bhi log sunte hai (people listen to that as well)?"

Nadir then went a step ahead and shockingly referred Gambhir as "4 feet ke, Rajpal Yadav ka bhai." Sohail seemed least interested and asked the anchor to change the topic amid the constant criticism of Gambhir by Nadir.

In the same conversation, Sohail also picked one between Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. In this regard, he pointed out, "Virat Kohli is a great batter, but Rohit Sharma is even better than Kohli. Rohit is technically better, he plays late and has a lot of time. Rohit ruled world cricket for 10-12 years."

Sohail also spoke at length on his verbal spat with Kohli during the India-Pakistan 2015 ODI World Cup clash. A lot of his quotes from the interaction have made headlines.

On Thursday (January 12), Rohit Sharma-led India defeated Sri Lanka by four wickets in pursuit of 216 at the Eden Gardens, Kolkata to earn an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series. After winning the series opener by 67 runs, in Guwahati, India dismissed the Lankans for 215 in 39.4 overs before attaining the target in 43.2 overs with four wickets in hand.

While Md Siraj (3 for 30) and Kuldeep Yadav (3 for 51) were the star performers with the ball, India managed to get past the finish line in the run-chase, after tottering at 86 for 4, courtesy of KL Rahul's gritty 64 not out and vital contributions from Rohit, Shubman Gill, Shreyas Iyer, Hardik Pandya, Axar Patel and Kuldeep (10 not out). Meanwhile, Virat Kohli -- who scored his second successive ton during Guwahati ODI -- perished for a nine-ball 4; being cleaned up by Lahiru Kumara.

After Kohli's dismissal, many on social media platforms criticised his ability to bat under pressure. However, former Indian opener Gautam Gambhir backed Kohli and said on Star Sports, "Virat Kohli is there because he is Virat Kohli. He has scored tough runs for India whenever needed."

He has done that on innumerable occasions throughout his career.

'He has scored tough runs whenever needed': Gambhir backs Kohli after poor outing in IND-SL 2nd ODI

Former Indian opener Gautam Gambhir was known for being a dependent batter for India across formats and playing with a lot of aggression. Post his retirement, he dons the role of a commentator-cum-expert and doesn't shy away from making big statements. Ahead of the second and penultimate ODI between India and Sri Lanka, at the Eden Gardens, Kolkata on Thursday (January 12), Gambhir claimed that 'Rohit Sharma is a better player than Ricky Ponting'.

Speaking to Star Sports, in the pre-match panel discussion, Gambhir made the glaring remark when the host reminded him that Rohit is just one hundred away from equalling Ponting's tally in the format (30 tons). Just then, Gambhir summed up the discussion by saying, "Rohit Sharma is a better player than Ricky Ponting because Ricky Ponting has a shit record in the subcontinent."

Speaking about Ponting and Rohit's numbers, Punter was Australia's Mr. Dependable across formats -- though T20Is came very late during his career. Rohit Sharma better player than Ricky Ponting as Australian has s*** record in subcontinent: Gautam Gambhir

India is set to host the 2023 ODI World Cup in October-November. It will be the first time that India will solely host the showpiece event and the ardent Indian cricket fans have their hopes pinned on Rohit Sharma & Co. During the first ODI between India and Sri Lanka, in Guwahati on Tuesday (January 10), former Indian opener Gautam Gambhir -- an integral part of the MS Dhoni-led Indian team when they lifted the ODI World Cup in 2011 (co-hosted by India, SL and Bangladesh) -- narrated an unheard story from the ODI WC final, held 12 years back in Mumbai.

India met Sri Lanka in the title clash in the 2011 edition at the iconic Wankhede Stadium. The Islanders rode on Mahela Jayawardene's sublime ton to post a challenging 274 for 6 in 50 overs. In reply, India were 31 for 2 before being 114 for 3 with Gambhir and Dhoni getting together for the fourth wicket. The duo stitched a memorable 109-run stand and took India past the finish line, with six wickets in hand, courtesy of Gambhir's 97 and then captain Dhoni's 91 not out. While Dhoni finished it off in style, with a six in the penultimate over, Gambhir weathered the early storm and set it up for India. He, however, missed out on becoming the first Indian to slam a hundred in the WC final; falling short by three runs.

Despite Dhoni's encouragement, Gambhir fell short of reaching the triple-figure mark. Nonetheless, Dhoni and Yuvraj Singh (21 not out) took India home as they lifted the mega title after 28 years. Will Rohit & Co. replicate the same feat later this year? Only time will tell...

'Don't rush into your 100, I can accelerate if needed': Gambhir recalls Dhoni's words during 2011 ODI WC final

Team India is now gearing up for the three-match ODI series versus Sri Lanka, which gets underway on Tuesday (January 10). It is an important year for the senior men's cricket team with the ODI World Cup set to be held later this year, in India. The last time India hosted the mega event, along with Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, they went on to lift the coveted trophy in 2011. This time around, they will solely host the tournament -- for the first time ever -- and look to break their ten-year-long ICC-title-drought.

Ahead of India's first 50-over assignment in 2023, former Indian opener Gautam Gambhir -- who was part of MS Dhoni-led India's 2011 ODI WC triumph -- has a stern message for World Cup-bound players. With India missing key players in last few World Cups due to injuries, as a result of playing frequently, many missed games in the run-up to an ICC event. Thus, Gambhir feels the key players have to play 50-over format and prioritise it this year with the WC just few months away. In addition, he suggested that Indian players can skip IPL matches, if need be, to remain fit.

“If the franchise (IPL) has to suffer then they have to suffer. Indian cricket is the main stakeholder. Not the IPL. IPL is the byproduct. So, if India goes on to win the World Cup then this is the big occasion. So if an important player does miss the IPL, so be it. IPL happens every year, World Cup happens every four years,” the two-time World Cup winner Gambhir said while speaking on Star Sports’ show Road to Glory.

“If people who are playing all three formats want to take a break, then they can take a break from T20Is. But surely not from the ODI format," Gambhir mentioned.

Gambhir further asserted that players who feature in all three formats can take a break from T20Is but should be available for ODIs with a lot at stake in the format this year. “If people who are playing all three formats want to take a break, then they can take a break from T20Is. But surely not from the ODI format," he added.

It will be interesting to see if key Indian players miss games in IPL 2023 to remain fresh for the forthcoming ICC event.

'Indian cricket is main stakeholder, IPL is just...': Gambhir's message as Team India prepare for ODI WC

Former team India selector and a World Cup-winner himself, Krishnamachari Srikkanth has predicted that much like Gautam Gambhir of 2011, stalwart Virat Kohli will also play an anchor role in the upcoming 2023 World Cup, scheduled for October-November this year. In the team full of stars, Gambhir hogged the limelight with his match-winning 97 in the 2011 final against Sri Lanka at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. In addition to that, the left-handed batter also played a few handy knocks throughout the tournament batting at number 3, cutting a reputation of a saviour.

Virat, who also was part of that squad, scored important runs in selective games, including in the final and helped India lift the World Cup after 28 years. Now 12 years later, a veteran of the game with 12,471 ODI runs to his name, Kohli will aim to lift the coveted 50-over World Cup for the second time. Srikkanth, however, believes Kohli can replicate the heroics of Gambhir in the coming edition of mega tournament.

As quoted by Sportskeeda, Srikkanth said, “What a great feeling it was, to win the 83’ World Cup as a player and then to be chairman of selectors of the team, which won the 2011 World Cup is a story I can tell my grandchildren. First of all, the knock played by Gautam Gambhir was phenomenal, that too in the World Cup, congratulations to him, I am proud of him. Superb batting throughout the tournament. I am making the prediction that Virat Kohli will show us the same heroics in the 2023 World Cup."

Believing that swashbuckling opener Ishan Kishan will also be part of the final squad for the World Cup, following his record-breaking double hundred in an ODI against Bangladesh recently, Srikkanth said Kohli must take up the anchor role like Gambhir did in 2011, allowing players like Ishan to play with freedom.

"Just like Gautam Gambhir has played a major role of anchor in the past, the same way Virat Kohli will play that role this time around. He will help players like Ishan Kishan excel just as he got a century when Kishan got a double century."

"It’s all about freedom, giving your players the freedom, do what you want, play your game even if you get out, that’s the approach the team should have,” the former selector said.

The Indian team is currently playing Sri Lanka in the bilateral series at home and then will be facing New Zealand before taking on Australia for four Tests in the Border-Gavaskar series. As reported earlier, the BCCI has shortlisted 20 key players for the World Cup, and the National Cricket Academy (NCA) has been asked to monitor their workload management.

Virat Kohli to do a Gautam Gambhir at 2023 World Cup, predicts ex-selector Krishnamachari Srikkanth

After India's T20 World Cup 2022 debacle, the focus has now shifted to the ICC ODI World Cup 2023, which will be held in India later this year. Thus, Team India's ICC-title drought continues. The last ICC title they won came in 2013 when they lifted the Champions Trophy under MS Dhoni. Since then, the Men in Blue appeared in three ICC finals and ended as semi-finalists on four occasions. Nonetheless, a title triumph continues to evade them.

As the preparations have begun for the ODI World Cup, former Indian opener-turned-commentator Gautam Gambhir has pointed out a glaring issue that has resulted in India's failures in the last two World Cups.

"They got to play together. I think the biggest mistake that Indian cricket has made in the last two World Cups has been that these guys have not played enough cricket together. Tell me, how many times have we got the best playing 11 in the park? We haven't; only during the World Cup we decided to have the best playing 11, but unfortunately, that was never the best playing 11. So, these guys have to play enough of white ball cricket, especially for the 50 overs World Cup together irrespective of whether they want to take a break from the T20 or from the IPL," Gambhir said on Star Sports show.

In addition, Gambhir -- the T20 WC and ODI WC medallist -- stated that if any player wants to take a rest, they can skip a few matches in the shortest format or even the IPL but play the ODIs.

Gambhir added, "If they want to take a break, people who play more than three formats, they can definitely take a break from T20 cricket, but surely not from the ODI format. If the franchisee has to suffer, they have to suffer. Indian cricket is the main stakeholder, not the IPL. IPL is just a by-product. So, if India goes out and wins the World Cup, that is the bigger ovation, that is the bigger ring. For example, if an important player does miss the IPL games so be it because IPL happens every year and the World Cup happens only once in four years. So, for me, I think winning the World Cup is far more important than winning the IPL."

Rohit Sharma-led Indian ODI team will commence their preparations for the World Cup with a home series versus Sri Lanka, starting on January 10. They will look for a winning start in what is a crucial year for Team India.

'Biggest mistake India made in last two World Cups...' - Gautam Gambhir points out glaring issue

After an ordinary run in 2022, Team India kicked off their run in 2023 with a narrow win over Sri Lanka in the first T20I of their three-match series on home soil. The year 2023 is an important one for the national side with the WTC final, in June, and the ODI World Cup later this year. It will be hosted entirely by India and Rohit Sharma & Co. have lots to do if they wish to win the ODI WC and end their nine-year-long ICC-title drought.

With the commencement of 2023, BCCI held a review meeting with head coach Rahul Dravid, captain Rohit and NCA chief VVS Laxman to discuss the road ahead for Team India and review last year's T20 World Cup debacle. As per reports, 20 players have been shortlisted for the marquee event and their fitness and progress will be closely monitored by the BCCI and team management in the run-up to the ODI WC. Amid all this, former Indian opener Gautam Gambhir has backed Rohit and Virat Kohli to come good and believes they can anchor the innings as they play spin really well. Gambhir feels Rohit and Kohli will play a 'massive role' in the upcoming WC.

"I feel people like Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and all those guys who can anchor their innings, who probably can play spin really well will play a massive role the coming World Cup," said Gambhir, while speaking on Star Sports show 'Road to World Cup Glory'. He also asked the team management to identify players who can fit into the template they are looking to form for the big event. "First, you need to identify the players who got that fearless approach and probably in a format like 50 overs you need to have a mixture of every kind of player. There are players who can anchor their innings. Change in role has also made a huge difference. During that time we had only one new ball, now we have got two new balls with five fielders inside.

"So, the role of a part timer has gone out of the window. The reverse swings, you don't see enough of reverse swings anymore, you don't see enough of chase for the finger spinners as well. But, I always feel that when we talk about this new approach, which India always talks about, the template and stuff, you have got to identify players who can adapt those roles or that template very easily," Gambhir asserted.

Gambhir added that if some players cannot adapt to the new template, there is no point in trying to fit them into the side. "Some people just cannot adapt to that template so why push them to play in a certain way which doesn't come naturally to them. So, for me, I think identifying players and at the same time getting the right mix is very important, rather than thinking that we have to play at a certain template so we got to select all the 15 with a similar mind-set or with a similar template," he added.

It is believed that Rohit, Kohli and few others will not play a lot of T20Is this year and shift their focus entirely on the ODI WC. The upcoming 50-over showpiece event can be Rohit and Kohli's last international appearance and the duo will be desperare to sign off on a high.

Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma will play massive role: Gambhir pins hopes on senior pros for 2023 ODI World Cup

Former India opener and World Cup winner Gautam Gambhir urges the selectors, coaches, and even the management to put some cricketers like Prithvi Shaw, in particular, on the right track. Despite knocking on the selectors' doors for some time now, Pant hasn't gotten the chance that he deserved. Aware of his performance in the domestic circuit, Gambhir - who had his share of challenges during his early days, feels Shaw must get back into the reckoning, and for that, coaches and selectors must play a role.

Speaking at length on this on Star Sports, Gambhir questioned the roles of these heads saying,

“What are coaches there for? What are selectors there for? Not just to select the team or probably do those throwdowns and make them ready for the game. Ultimately, it is the selectors, the coaches, and the management, who should try and get these guys, especially someone like Prithvi Shaw, on the right track,” Gautam said.

Gambhir also wants either of Dravid or the management to have a clear and transparent conversation with Shaw about his future as he feels such players cannot get wasted.

“That is one of the jobs of the management is. It is not only about preparing them for a game or helping them in the practice sessions. If that is the case, whether it is Rahul Dravid or the national selection chairman should have a word with him and show him the clarity and probably keep him around the group,” Gambhir added.

Gautam is of the opinion that any player who plays for India must tick all the boxes, be it fitness-wise or discipline-wise, and that is where the trainers come into the picture. He further feels Shaw is too good a cricketer to be left out, and that it's high he should be given more chances to prove his worth.

Gambhir concluded by saying, "If you are dedicated enough, passionate enough, to go on play for the country, you have got to do all the parameters right. Whether it be fitness or discipline. There are trainers who should be pushing Prithvi Shaw to do that. You should give a young boy at least one chance or probably a couple of chances, if he still does not do that, then probably he is not passionate enough to play for the country.”

Gautam Gambhir urges coaches, selectors to do their bit to get Prithvi Shaw back in reckoning

On Tuesday (December 27), the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced India's T20I and ODI squad for their upcoming home series versus Sri Lanka, which gets underway on January 3. While some big names weren't part of the Hardik Pandya-led T20I squad, the ODI line-up feature Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, KL Rahul and the likes with no mention of Shikhar Dhawan, Rishabh Pant (due to a niggle on his knee) and Bhuvneshwar Kumar.

Moreover, all-rounder Hardik was also promoted as the ODI vice-captain despite Rahul's presence. Ever since Rohit took over, Rahul has been his deputy across formats but a string of low scores and Hardik's rise as a leader has resulted in the former losing out on his vice-captaincy post. In the Bangladesh Tests, Rahul had scores of 22, 23, 10, and 2. Even in the ODIs, he scored a majestic 73 in the series opener before not doing anything significant (scoring 14 and 8 respectively) in the last two games. Thus, he knows he has to remain consistent or will lose his ODI spot as well in a World Cup year, with the mega event to be held later in 2023 in India.

Ahead of the SL ODIs, which commences on January 10, former Indian opener and Rahul's IPL franchise Lucknow Super Giants' (LSG) mentor Gautam Gambhir shared his take on the right-hander's form. "You can only control what you can control. You can't control selectors, you can't control what's going to happen in the next series. You got three ODIs against Sri Lanka. If you play that, just be in the present. That's all you can control. The moment you start to think about uncontrollable things, you're putting undue pressure on yourself,” Gambhir said in Star Sports' A Chat with Champions.

Gambhir, the T20 and ODI World Cup medallist, further added, "If you don't perform, someone else will take your position. That's not only with Sanju or KL, it's with Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma as well. If they don't perform, you will start questioning about their positions too. That's what international cricket is about. No one is indispensable. 'The moment you start...' - Gautam Gambhir shares his take on KL Rahul's struggles ahead of SL ODIs

Sam Curran and Ben Stokes starred for England in their five-wicket win over Pakistan in the T20 World Cup 2022 final versus Pakistan. Opting to bowl first, Jos Buttler-led Three Lions rode on Curran's 3 for 12 and two-fers from Adil Rashid and Chris Jordan to restrict Babar Azam-led Men in Green for a below-par 137 for 8 in 20 overs. In reply, Buttler & Co. chased down the target with an over to spare, courtesy of all-rounder Ben Stokes' 49-ball 52.

England tried to attack with the bat in the run-chase despite being 45 for 3. While Pakistani pacers were at their best and used the conditions very well, with Naseem Shah (0 for 30) and Haris Rauf (2 for 23) making run-scoring tough for the 2010 winners. Nonetheless, Stokes held his nerves and held one end with a steady inning. The left-hander returned with a 49-ball 52, laced with 5 fours and a six, to take England home with an over to spare. After his match-winning knock, the 31-year-old has joined Gautam Gambhir and Kumar Sangakkara in an elite club. Stokes has become the first English batter to score a fifty in ODI and T20 WC finals, third overall.

Sangakkara, the former Sri Lankan captain, has become the first to achieve this unique feat. He scored a fine 64* in the Sri Lanka-Pakistan 2009 T20 WC final to attain this record, after also scoring 54 in the 2007 ODI WC final versus Australia. Gambhir followed suit. He first struck a match-winning 75 in India's 2007 T20 WC final triumph over Pakistan and followed it up with an impressive 97 in the India-SL ODI WC final in 2011. Meanwhile, Stokes had scored a memorable 89 not out in the 2019 ODI WC final between England-New Zealand before his match-winning knock versus Pakistan on Sunday (November 13) at the MCG, Melbourne.

After the match, Stokes told the broadcasters, "In finals especially when chasing.. you probably forget all the hard work before that, how we bowled, Adil Rashid and Sam Curran won us the game.

Ben Stokes joins Gambhir, Sangakkara in elite club after match-winning 52* in T20 WC final vs Pakistan

India had another terrible end to their campaign in another men's ICC event with a humiliating ten-wicket loss to England in the second semi-final of the T20 World Cup 2022 edition. On Thursday (November 10), Rohit Sharma & Co. locked horns with Jos Buttler-led England, at the Adelaide Oval, Adelaide, and were asked to bat first.

Riding on half-centuries from Virat Kohli (40-ball 50) and Hardik Pandya's scintillating 33-ball 63 to post 168 for 6. Their timid approach, along with English bowlers bowling the right lengths, led to India posting below 185-190. In reply, Buttler's 80* and Alex Hales' 47-ball 86 not out led the 2010 winners to the final, where they face Pakistan at the MCG, Melbourne on Sunday (November 13).

Following this defeat, India remain trophyless in big-ticket events since 2013. Since then, the senior men's team have lost four semis and two finals. Their last ICC title came under MS Dhoni, under whom India won all three mega titles. After the loss, former Indian opener recalled Dhoni's achievements and said while speaking at Star Sports, "Someone will come and probably score more double 100s than Rohit Sharma and more 100s than Virat Kohli, but I don't think any Indian captain would be able to achieve three ICC trophies."

Dhoni not only managed 17,266 runs, accounted for 824 dismissals behind the stumps but also led India to some memorable wins during his captaincy tenure.

India started their campaign with a narrow win over arch-rivals, beat the Netherlands and Zimbabwe convincingly, gave a tough fight before losing to South Africa and were challenged by Bangladesh before eemerging on top against them. They topped their group, with four wins, but were crushed by the Three Lions in the semi-finals.

With this, India's wait for an ICC title continues since 2013. They will now tour to New Zealand for a white-ball series.

'Don't think any Indian captain...': Gautam Gambhir recalls MS Dhoni's laurels after India's T20 WC exit

Former India opener Gautam Gambhir lauded Suryakumar Yadav after he produced another brilliant knock for the Indian team in the T20 World Cup 2022 on Sunday. Continuing his purple patch with the willow, Suryakumar scored a stunning unbeaten 61 off just 25 balls against Zimbabwe to help India earn a comprehensive four-wicket win and reclaim the top spot in Group 2.

Suryakumar has been enjoying a phenomenal run in the tournament so far and has been the best batter for the Indian team along with Virat Kohli. Known for his 360-degree hitting prowess, the Indian star breached the 200-run mark in the T20 World Cup on Sunday with his cracking 61 which was laced with six fours and four sixes.

He has so far scored half-centuries against Netherlands, South Africa, and Zimbabwe in the tournament and currently has 225 runs to his name in five matches at an average of 75. Hailing him as a rare commodity for Team India, Gambhir said Suryakumar is already the Player of the Tournament for him in the T20 World Cup 2022.

"We have spoken a lot about him. Players like Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and KL Rahul are very orthodox. Suryakumar is different. India haven’t had these kinds of players, especially batting at No.4," Gambhir said on Star Sports.

"He has scored above 200 runs with three half-centuries. For me, he is the Player of the Tournament already for the kind of impact he has had even if India do not go on to win the World Cup," he added.

Gautam Gambhir lauds Suryakumar Yadav, calls him the Player of the Tournament in T20 World Cup 2022

Legendary Pakistan fast bowler Wasim Akram reacted to former India opener Gautam Gambhir's recent explosive remarks on Pakistan's current captain Babar Azam. Gambhir lashed out at Babar over his 'selfish captaincy' after his team's poor show in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2022.

Pakistan have had a disastrous start in the tournament this year and are currently reeling at the fifth spot on the Group 2 points table after just a solitary win from their first three matches. Babar & Co. lost their opening game against India before suffering a shock defeat against Zimbabwe in their next Super 12 clash.

The Men in Green did bounce back to winning ways against Netherlands in their third Super 12 game but are at the mercy of other teams to remain alive in the race for the semi-finals with two games in hand against South Africa and Bangladesh.

Gambhir had bashed Babar when asked for his views on his captaincy after the Pakistan skipper didn't allow Fakhar Zaman to open the batting in the clash against Netherlands. The former India opener said Babar was being selfish as captain and is not thinking about his team but personal records.

"In my opinion, first, you think about your team instead of yourself. If nothing goes according to your plan, you should have sent Fakhar Zaman up the batting order. This is called selfishness; as a captain, it is easy to be selfish for Babar and Rizwan to open the innings for Pakistan and create so many records. If you want to be a leader, you have to think about your team," Gambhir said on Star Sports.

Gambhir's comments created a stir in the Pakistan cricket fraternity with several former cricketers reacting to his comments. Akram too was asked for his views on Gambhir's comments during a discussion on Pakistan's A Sports. The legendary pacer came up with a no-nonsense response and said Gambhir has the right to give his opinion.

In the game against Netherlands, Zaman was included in the playing XI but sent to bat at number three with Babar and Rizwan opening the batting. Wasim Akram reacts to Gautam Gambhir's 'selfish' remark on Babar Azam's captaincy in T20 World Cup

During Pakistan's Netherlands face-off in the T20 World Cup 2022 edition, in Perth on October 30, former Indian opener-turned-commentator Gautam Gambhir made heads turn with his remark on Babar Azam. The Pakistan captain has been slammed left, right and centre following the Men in Green's dismal run so far in the competition.

When the one-time winners' playing XI didn't feature Fakhar Zaman, who is battling injury concerns in the run-up to the T20 WC, Babar was heavily criticised. Even when Fakhar was roped in for the clash versus the Dutch line-up, he batted at No. 3 whereas Pakistan continued to open with Babar and Md Rizwan, who have been criticised for their slow starts.

Thus, Gambhir slammed Babar and said during commentary of the Pakistan-Netherlands face-off, “In my opinion, first, you think about your team instead of yourself; if nothing goes according to your plan, you should have sent Fakhar Zaman up the batting order. This is called selfishness; as a captain, it is easy to be selfish."

Now, Gambhir's arch-rival Shahid Afridi has joined in and reacted to the former Indian opener's comments.

"Tournament ke baad koshish karenge Babar ko bole ki unke baare mein bhi kuchh bole kyuki wo bhi toh ghar jayenge na. (After the end of the T20 WC, we’ll try and tell Babar to say something about him (Gambhir). After all, he will head straight back home to India too),” Afridi said on Pakistani channel Samaa TV.

Afridi criticised Gambhir for his usage of words and further opined, "There is always criticism, but you need to be very careful with words. You should use words that should come as advice for the player, and you can make the people understand it as well. As far as Babar is concerned, he has given so many match-winning performances. The consistency with which he has scored, very few Pakistan batters have. He may not have risen to the expectations which is why he is facing some flak."

It will be interesting to see if Gambhir reacts to Afridi's comments. Babar-led Pakistan will play South Africa in a crucial Super 12 clash on Thursday (November 03) in Sydney.

'You need to....': Shahid Afridi reacts to Gautam Gambhir's 'selfish' remark on Pakistan captain Babar Azam

Former India opener Gautam Gambhir lashed out at Indian wicket-keeper batter Dinesh Karthik after his flop show against South Africa in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2022 on Sunday. Indis suffered a five-wicket defeat in the low-scoring thriller in Perth as their unbeaten streak in the tournament came to an end.

It was a disappointing batting performance from the Indian team as Suryakmar Yadav single-handedly propelled the team to a fighting total of 133 runs after a disastrous start. While the likes of KL Rahul, Rohit Sharma, and Virat Kohli failed to deliver, the middle-order too was non-existent for India against a quality Proteas pace attack.

Suryakumar slammed a brilliant knock of 68 runs off just 40 balls but failed to find support from the other end. India were reeling at 49/5 at one stage in their innings when Suryakumar joined hands with Dinesh Karthik to steady the ship with a 52-run stand for the sixth wicket.

However, Karthik, who managed only 6 runs off 15 balls failed to deliver and got out trying to play a big shot at the wrong time. Karthik has been backed by the team management as the designated finisher and first-choice keeper batter ahead of Rishabh Pant, however, he has failed to live up to the expectations.

Gambhir lashed out at the veteran wicket-keeper batter after his poor show against South Africa and said he lacks clarity when asked to play with 7-8 overs remaining and is only good for death overs.

"What is Dinesh Karthik's problem? If he gets a lot of balls to face, he is not able to figure out the tempo at which he has to bat. If he gets just 10-`12 balls, then there is clarity in his mind. He is then able to take on the bowlers. If there are 7-8 overs remaining, then he doesn't have clarity over whether he should rotate the strike or block," Gambhir said on Star Sports.

The former India opener also slammed the 37-year-old for failing to rotate the strike during his partnership with Suryakumar against South Africa on Sunday and said he was neither able to steal singles nor hit proper shots during his innings.

"With the experience that Dinesh Karthik has, it's important that he figures out the tempo and the time to attack. He can attack any bowler, he has all the shots in the book. He is a finisher too. But there are situations when your team is 5 down in the first 10 overs, then does he have the temperament to bat accordingly and build a partnership, go at run-a-ball and give yourself a chance to attack the bowlers at the death. He got out at the wrong time. But even if you had looked at him before that, he didn't look confident during that knock. He didn't have any tempo to his batting. Neither did he rotate the strike nor did he play confident shots," added Gambhir.

Karthik picked up an injury while keeping wickets in the game against the Proteas and is likely to miss India's next Super 12 clash against Bangladesh. Pant can be his direct replacement in the playing if he misses out.

Also Read: Rohit Sharma explains thought process behind giving the ball to R Ashwin in 18th over vs SA However, Karthik, who managed only 6 runs off 15 balls failed to deliver and got out trying to play a big shot at the wrong time. Also Read: Perth hotel issues apology, suspends staff who leaked video of Virat Kohli's personal room The former India opener also slammed the 37-year-old for failing to rotate the strike during his partnership with Suryakumar against South Africa on Sunday and said he was neither able to steal singles nor hit proper shots during his innings.

Neither did he rotate the strike nor did he play confident shots: Gautam Gambhir slams Dinesh Karthik

Former India opener Gautam Gambhir was left surprised by the Indian team's decision to drop all-rounder Axar Patel for Deepak Hooda in the playing for their clash against South Africa in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2022 on Sunday (October 30). After failing to make the cut in the playing XI for India's first two Super 12 matches, Hooda finally made his T20 World Cup debut on Sunday.

Binging in Hooda for Axar was the only change India made in their playing XI from their last win against Netherlands. Gambhir failed to understand the logic behind the selection and asked where did India plan to play Hooda. He also argued if Hooda can be relied upon as India's sixth bowler.

"Ya, it was quite surprising for me. Why would you want to go with a batter when something is working for you. I know Axar has not bowled a lot, but he has bowled four overs in the previous game. India has gone with only 5 main bowlers and Hooda is your sixth bowler. Probably the reason could be that South Africa have a couple of left-handers in their ranks, that is the only reason I can think of," Gambhir said on Star Sports ahead of the start of the game.

Hooda, who made his T20 debut for India earlier this year, showcased exceptional form with the bat to earn a spot in the team's squad for the ongoing T20 World Cup 2022. However, he had to wait for his chance as India went with Axar as their second all-rounder alongside Hardik Pandya.

While he has been consistent in the anchor's role in the middle and the top order, Gambhir felt India could have gone with a striker of the ball lower down the order instead of playing Hooda. However, he insisted the fact that South Africa have a couple of left-handers in their batting line-up might have prompted the Indian team to select Hooda, who can be a handy leg-spinner.

"But where you are going to play him? Are you going to play him at number 7? He is not someone who can bat at number 7. It is good to depth in your batting, there is nothing wrong in it, but it depends on who you are getting. If the batter is suited for the position, that also matters. And we will have to wait and watch how India fare with a less strong bowling line-up," Gambhir added.

Hooda's selection didn't work out for India as he was dismissed on a duck after coming out to bat at number five against the Proteas on Sunday. On a day when the entire India batting line-up struggled on a tricky wicket in Perth, it was Suryakumar Yadav who turned out to be the team's saviour.

Suryakumar played a brilliant knock of 68 runs off 40 balls to help India post a respectable total of 133 runs on the board after they were left reeling at 49/5 at one stage in their innings. India will be looking to wrap up South Africa's run-chase early and bag their third win in a row.

'Quite surprising': Gautam Gambhir questions Deepak Hooda's selection in T20 WC clash against South Africa

Former India opener Gautam Gambhir feels Virat Kohli's unbeaten 82 against Pakistan in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2022 on Sunday was better than his match-winning innings for India against Australia in Mohali in 2016. Kohli had scored an unbeaten 82 against the Aussies in an epic run-chase in Mohali during the 2016 T20 World Cup.

The senior India batter, who is regarded as one of the greatest of all time had in the past labeled the Mohali masterclass as the best knock of his career. However, even he had to admit that his stunning half-century against Pakistan at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) was an extraordinary effort and the best knock that he has produced in an Indian shirt.

With Inda under massive pressure in the 160-run chase, Kohli defied all odds to play one of the finest innings of his career. He scored an unbeaten 82 off 53 deliveries laces with four sixes and six fours to help the Men in Blue clinch a last-ball thriller in their T20 World Cup opener.

With 48 to get off the last three overs, Kohli launched an onslaught against the Pakistan bowlers and took the likes of Shaheen Afridi and Haris Rauf to the cleaners to get India over the line. Gambhir echoed the sentiments of many in rating Kohli's 82 against Pakistan at MCG above his Mohali knock considering the pressure and the magnitude of the game.

"Finishing it off, probably literally getting more than 50% of the run. So it has to be up there probably better than the Mohali innings because if you see the magnitude, the conditions, the pressure, this was much more," Gambhir said on Star Sports.

Gambhir reserved special praise for Kohli's stunning lofted backfoot shot against Pakistan pacer Haris Rauf which went straight into the stands. It is one of the most difficult shots to execute but Kohli did it to perfection despite being nder immense pressure with India needing 28 off 8 balls at the time.

He followed up it up with another six with his trademark flick shot to bring the equation further down to 16 runs needed off the last over. India won on the last ball after a dramatic finish to the final over.

"It was probably the shot of the tournament. That shot under pressure. It was not that he just played the shot. You knew that if he had not hit that ball out of the ground, India would have been under serious pressure because 28 off 8, you are looking at a defeat. Playing that shot under pressure against Haris Rauf. It's just the quality of that shot. You can't explain that shot," Gambhir said speaking about Kohli's six against Rauf.

With the first points in their bag, India will now look to continue their winning run when they lock horns with Netherlands in their next Super 12 clash on Thursday (October 27).

The magnitude was much more: Gambhir rates Virat Kohli's 82 vs Pakistan better than his Mohali knock

Former India batter Gautam Gambhir feels the blockbuster clash between India and Pakistan in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2022 should be seen as just another game. The ex-opener, who was part of India's 2007 T20 World Cup-winning team under former skipper MS Dhoni, said winning against Pakistan is not the final goal for the Indian team but just a step towards winning the World Cup.

The hype surrounding the marquee clash between the two arch-rivals is immense as they lock horns for only the third time this year. India and Pakistan met twice in the Asia Cup earlier this year where both teams managed to win a game each. India have lost twice in their last three meetings against their eternal rivals and revenge will be on the minds of Rohit Sharma & Co. on Sunday.

Ahead of the marquee clash, Gambhir said India should treat the game as a stepping stone towards realising their ultimate dream of returning home as the new T20 World Cup winners. "Beating Pakistan is not the goal, it is just a step towards winning the cup," said Gambhir while speaking on Star Sports.

While Gambhir urged India to treat the clash against Pakistan as just another game to ensure they can continue focusing on the ultimate prize, he said the game will not be a one-sided affair as Babar Azam & Co. have a quality pace attack which can wreck havoc on its day.

"I am not going to say it’s a one-sided game because Pakistan is a very strong bowling line-up. They probably have the best bowling line-up in this competition when it comes to seamers. They have got three quality pacers who can bowl 140-plus," said Gambhir.

Beating Pakistan not the goal, it's just a step for winning cup: Gautam Gambhir on marquee clash

Former India opener Gautam Gambhir has warned captain Rohit Sharma and the Indian team management against playing Dinesh Karthik over Rishabh Pant as the first-choice wicket-keeper in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2022. The 2007 T20 World Cup winner believes the decision to play Karthik, who has been effective only in slog overs can backfire for India at the World Cup.

While Indian skipper Rohit Sharma has confirmed he has already decided the playing XI for the team's opening clash against arch-rivals Pakistan in the T20 World Cup 2022, the debate surrounding the team combination has not died down. One of the major selection headaches for India is the wicket-keeper's slot with Karthik and Pant competing against each other.

While Pant holds a significant advantage in being a left-hander in the absence of Ravindra Jadeja, the Indian team management has recently backed Karthik over the young gun considering his finishing exploits. The 37-year-old has been phenomenal down the order and has played numerous match-winning cameos for the Indian team as a finisher.

However, Gambhir believes India should not pick a batter specifically to play only ten balls and that the strategy can prove to be dangerous when India lose early wickets. The former India opener said he would pick Pant to bat at number five in his playing XI with Hardik Pandya and Axar Patel batting at no.6 and no.7 respectively.

"In my playing XI, Rishabh Pant should play at No.5, Hardik Pandya at No.6, and Axar Patel at No.7. But what we have seen in the practice matches is that Dinesh Karthik will play. But a player is not picked to play just 10 balls. You should pick a player so that he can bat at No.5 or 6. But Dinesh Karthik has not shown that intention," Gambhir told Zee News.

"He and the team management have shown the intention that he will bat only in the last 2-3 overs and that can be dangerous because in Australia, if you lose early wickets, you might have to send in Axar Patel early because you also wouldn't want to expose Hardik early. That is why I picked Pant in my playing XI. But again, that won't happen," he added.

While India's top four is already sorted with captain Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul, Virat Kohli and Suryakumar Yadav walking into the XI, Gambhir feels India should play with three specialist fast bowlers in Australia. He picked Mohammed Shami as his first-choice pacer and backed Harshal Patel as the death overs specialist.

The former India opener wants the team management to select one between Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Arshdeep Singh while using Hardik Pandya as the fourth pacer.

"You will have to play with three pacers. Mohammed Shami should be picked first, before Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Arshdeep Singh, and Harshal Patel. Hardik Pandya will be the fourth seamer and the sixth bowling option. The quality Shami has, we know he is very effective with the new ball, but with the old ball, which we all saw in the match against Australia. So, Shami first. One of Bhuvneshwar or Arshdeep should be picked. Harshal should be picked because he does have some experience bowling in the death," said Gambhir.

A player is not picked to play 10 balls: Gambhir explains why India should play Pant over Karthik in T20 WC

Virat Kohli's form with the willow will be crucial for the Indian team if they are to fancy their chances in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2022 in Australia. Kohli has a terrific record in the shortest format when it comes to playing in Australia and has mastered the conditions down under, over the years.

The senior India batter has 451 runs to his name in 11 T20Is in Australia at a brilliant average of 64.42, including five fifties. Kohli has the most runs by a visiting batter in Australia in T20Is and will be aiming to add to his tally in the T20 World Cup this year.

Ahead of the start of India's campaign in the T20 World Cup 2022, former India opener Gautam Gambhir aimed a jibe at Kohli and advised the senior India batter to focus on winning matches for his team rather than his individual records. Gambhir's comments came on Star Sports after Kohli's impressive numbers in Australia were highlighted during a show.

The presenter asked Gambhir with what mindset should Kohli approach the T20 World Cup after lauding him for his numbers in Australia. Gambhir came up with a straightforward response and said any batter should focus on scoring runs for the team.

The former India cricketer, who was part of India's 2007 T20 World Cup-winning team, said individual records are of no value in big tournaments like the World Cup and Kohli should look at playing impactful knocks rather than focusing on notching up fifties and centuries.

“Go with the mindset of scoring runs, what else can there be? The role of a batter is to make runs, the role of the bowler is take wickets. Make runs that help your team. Don't look at scoring 50s and 100s, score 30-40 runs at an impact which can help your team reach 170-180. If you are chasing, bat in a manner where you can relieve the lower middle-order of pressure.," Gambhir said on Star Sports.

"In these tournaments, individual records should be left at home. If you are going to Australia, pack these records in India. Individual records are of no value in these tournaments.

"Winning the World Cup is important. If you make 200 runs and your team wins the world cup that is your legacy. If you make 500 runs and the team does not qualify, those runs only go in your individual record. If the whole team faces criticism, you are part of it as well," added the former India opener.

Individual records have no value in big tournaments: Gautam Gambhir's advice to Virat Kohli ahead of T20 WC

India will kick off their T20 World Cup 2022 campaign against arch-rivals Pakistan on October 23 at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground in Melbourne. While there is significant hype around the clash with the encounter being deemed as a virtual decider for the top spot in Group 2 of Super 12, former India opener Gautam Gambhir has warned the Indian team to be wary of another opposition which is peaking at the right time.

Gambhir believes Sri Lanka can pose a huge threat to the major teams at the T20 World Cup this year as they are running high on confidence after winning the Asia Cup 2022. Sri Lanka had stunned India in the group stage before defeating Pakistan in the final to clinch the Asia Cup trophy for the sixth time earlier this year.

Gambhir feels Sri Lanka are peaking at the right time in the shortest format having won the Asia Cup and will take a lot of confidence into the tournament.

“Sri Lanka, because of the kind of success they have had at the Asia Cup. The way they are playing, the way they are probably peaking at the right time. And with Chameera and Lahiru Kumara coming in, they probably got most of their places covered. They are going to be a threat and so they are going to take a lot of confidence into the T20 World Cup,” the former India opener said during a discussion on Star Sports.

However, Sri Lanka's shock defeat at the hands of 14th-ranked Namibia in the qualifiers proved Gambhir's prediction slightly wrong on Sunday (October 16). In one of the biggest upsets in the tournament so far, Namibia thrashed Asia Cup champions Sri Lanka by 55 runs to get off to a winning start.

Namibia went on to post a strong total of 163 runs on the board, batting first in the game before they skittled out Sri Lanka for a paltry 108 runs to register a comprehensive victory. Sri Lanka now need to win their remaining two matches to comfortably qualify for the Super 12 stage.

India, on the other hand, will take on Australia and New Zealand in their remaining two warm-up matches before locking horns with Pakistan in their tournament opener on October 23.

'They are going to be a threat': Gautam Gambhir issues warning to India ahead of T20 World Cup opener

Former Indian opener Gautam Gambhir, who was part of the MS Dhoni-led Indian team's victorious run in the 2007 T20 World Cup and 2011 ODI World Cup, has criticised the hero-worship culture present among Indian cricket fans. Gambhir slammed the culture and said that Indian cricket fans, media and broadcasters shouldn't create monsters in the dressing room by idolising individuals and forgetting the contributions of other players.

The 40-year-old Gambhir believes that this culture, which dates back to 1983 when India won the ODI World Cup at Lord's, has led to fans lauding stars such as Virat Kohli, MS Dhoni, and Kapil Dev to such an extent that they forget or undervalue the contributions of other team members.

"Don’t create monsters in the dressing room. Only monster should be Indian cricket, not an individual," Gambhir told the Indian Express on their show Idea Exchange. "Do you think that this whole hero worship chokes the next star to come up? Nobody has grown in that shadow. It was Mahendra Singh Dhoni earlier, it is Virat Kohli now," the former southpaw added.

Backing his claims, Gambhir gave an example of the India-Afghanistan Asia Cup clash, which was headlined by Kohli by virtue of his 71st international century. He believes Kohli took all the limelight due to the hero-worship culture and Bhuvneshwar Kumar (who returned with 5 for 4)'s contributions got completely neglected. "When Kohli got a 100 and there was this young guy from a small town of Meerut (Bhuvneshwar Kumar), who also managed to get five wickets, no one even bothered to speak about him. This was so unfortunate. I was the only one, during that commentary stint, who said that. He bowled four overs and got five wickets and I don’t think anyone knows about that. But Kohli scores a 100 and there are celebrations everywhere in this country. India needs to come out of this hero worship. Whether it’s Indian cricket, whether it’s politics, whether it’s Delhi cricket. We have to stop worshipping heroes. The only thing that we need to worship is Indian cricket, or for that matter Delhi or India," Gambhir explained.

The former Kolkata Knight Riders' (KKR) skipper Gambir further asserted, "Who created that? It is created by two things. First, by social media followers, which is probably the fakest thing in this country because you are judged by how many followers you have. That is what creates a brand."

"Second, by the media and the broadcasters. If you keep talking about one person day in and day out, it eventually becomes a brand. That is how it was in 1983. Why start from Dhoni? It started in 1983. When India won the first World Cup, it was all about Kapil Dev. When we won in 2007 and 2011, it was Dhoni. Who created that? None of the players did. Nor did the BCCI. Have the news channels and broadcasters ever spoken about Indian cricket? Have we ever spoken that Indian cricket needs to flourish? There are more than two or three people who are stakeholders of Indian cricket. They don’t rule Indian cricket, they should not be ruling Indian cricket. Indian cricket should be ruled by the 15 people sitting in that dressing room. Everyone has a contribution to make … … I’ve never been able to follow anyone in my life. And that has been my biggest problem. The media and the broadcasters create a brand, no one else creates a brand," added Gambhir.
