US Vice President JD Vance has defended the Trump administration's decision to suspend major technology companies from an employment-based green card programme, accusing critics of wanting to preserve a “never-ending flow of cheap labour”. The move has direct implications for Indian IT services firms and thousands of Indian professionals seeking permanent residency in the United States.Vance made the remarks on Friday (Oct 08) in a X post while responding to Democratic Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal, who criticised the administration's decision to suspend companies from the Permanent Labour Certification (PERM) programme, a key step in the employment-based green card process. “‘Socialism’ apparently means fighting like hell to ensure mega-corporations have a never-ending flow of cheap labour,” Vance wrote.

Jayapal, who sits on the House Immigration Subcommittee and previously held an H-1B visa, argued that the administration's actions were undermining legal immigration and threatening America's ability to innovate.
Jayapal warns against restricting legal immigration
Jayapal said the PERM programme provides a structured route for foreign workers seeking employment-based green cards while requiring employers to demonstrate that hiring them would benefit the US economy and not harm American workers. “The administration has been consistently working to take away legal pathways for immigrants to contribute their talents to our country, and this is yet another of those attacks,” she wrote on X.She also argued that immigrants play an important role in the technology sector and other parts of the US economy. “You don’t fix a broken immigration system by taking a hammer to legal immigration,” she said, adding that targeting Microsoft or the PERM programme would weaken legal immigration and America's capacity to innovate. Also read | Who is DogeDesigner? Donald Trump wants the Nobel Peace Prize.
He claims to have settled eight wars.
Yet conflicts continue, and his latest declaration — “I can do whatever I want, if I want” — raises fresh questions about presidential power.
Even within MAGA, America's military involvement in Iran has exposed divisions.
Can claims of peacemaking withstand the realities of war?

Donald Trump renews his claim to global recognition as wars persist

Donald Trump once again left people wondering about his mental faculties during a meeting at the Oval Office on Wednesday (Oct 7). Not only did he struggle to stay awake in the midst of journalists and his administrative team, but he also said something so bizarre that left everyone watching wondering if he was seriously saying the words. His latest gaffe comes at a time when he again pitched himself for the Nobel Peace Prize, after repeatedly asking for it last year. Critics have dubbed Trump "deranged" for his bizarre antics, with California Governor Gavin Newsom recently saying he is "mentally ill." The 80-year-old was practically snoozing at the Oval meeting as venture capitalist Brad Gerstner praised his “Trump Accounts” for American children in front of the press. And when he was shaken out of his slumber by a journalist with a question on the plague scare in Russia, the American president blurted out the most unexpected thing.
Trump remembers Putin's birthday when asked about the plague
When asked whether he had spoken with Russian President Vladimir Putin about the possible plague outbreak in Siberia, he said, "Today is his birthday. Today is Vladimir Putin’s birthday; I’m sure you’re gonna celebrate it." Let them take out San Diego. This is a very small price to pay." A flabbergasted Newsom said, "Donald Trump is mentally ill. Trump has also said quite a few times that he wants to run for president again, even though the American Constitution limits it to two terms.
Trump's bizarre ‘vegan’ rant at Texas rally
At a Texas rally on Wednesday, Trump went on a bizarre tirade, telling the crowd that Melania calls him "sir" when correcting his pronunciation of the word "vegan." Trump recalled, "You know, my wife told me 'sir, you have to do me a favor — it's not vay-gan, it's vee-gan.'" From Putin’s birthday to nuking LA: Trump’s latest bizarre ramblings fuel fresh mental health fears

The White House, as per reports, has asked the Pentagon to develop military options for striking Iranian targets ahead of the upcoming US midterm elections. Citing two unnamed US administration officials, The Atlantic reported that the scale and targets of any potential operation remain under discussion, and no decision has been made to launch strikes. The US Central Command, which is overseeing the war effort, is preparing options, it added. This comes as US President Donald Trump seeks to show progress in the much-criticised eight-month-old conflict and ease pressure from soaring fuel prices ahead of the November 2026 mid-term elections.
Trump attempting to project strength ahead of midterms
Administration officials have acknowledged that limited military action alone would be unlikely to force Tehran back to negotiations, reopen the Strait of Hormuz or bring down gasoline prices before Election Day. Supporters of the idea, however, believe a limited operation could allow Trump to project strength and claim progress before voters head to the polls. A more extensive military campaign could then follow the midterms.Trump has repeatedly suggested that the conflict could resume after the election. In a recent interview with Time, he said the US had been “stocking up for the last six months”. Last week, he said the US would win the war “right after the election”, while adding, “Maybe before the election.”Also read | 100 victory claims, 200+ days of war: Is Trump's Iran gamble turning into a midterm nightmare?
Iran war becomes US election issue
The conflict has become a growing political liability for Republicans as higher oil and gasoline prices weigh on voters. Oil prices surged to nearly $118 a barrel earlier in the conflict and have remained around $100 since then. US gasoline prices are now averaging $4.37 a gallon, according to AAA, compared with just under $3 before the US and Israeli strikes began on February 28.Energy analysts have warned that renewed military action could push prices higher. The US Energy Information Administration has also found that crude prices have typically risen when American strikes resume after pauses.Trump's approval rating, meanwhile, is at a record low thanks to these rising prices. A Reuters/Ipsos poll released in September put the second-term president's approval rating at a new low of 32 per cent, while Democrats led Republicans by eight points among registered voters. The poll results also show that only 34 per cent of Americans support Trump's handling of the Iran war, and just 17 per cent approve of his handling of the cost of living.Another poll by CNN/SSRS also showed similar results. According to it, only about one in four Americans approve of his administration's handling of the conflict with Iran, and a majority say the conflict has hurt the United States. The poll, conducted among 1,206 US adults from September 16 to 17, found that 26 per cent approve of Trump's handling of the situation in Iran, while 73 per cent disapprove. That is down from 33 per cent approval in a CNN/SSRS poll conducted in March, shortly after the conflict began. Also read | US Midterms 2026: How grocery bills, cost of living are turning the Nov 3 election into a test of Trump
Any attack carries risks
A renewed campaign would put roughly 50,000 US troops stationed across the region and Gulf allies at risk of Iranian retaliation. It could also further strain American weapons stocks. “The military action has done nothing to drive down oil prices; in fact, it has done the opposite,” Will Walldorf, an international-affairs professor at Wake Forest University and senior fellow at Defense Priorities, said.Washington is simultaneously pursuing indirect talks with Tehran, but major differences remain over a cease-fire, the US blockade of the Strait of Hormuz and reopening the vital waterway.

The Trump administration is reportedly weighing pre-midterm strikes on Iran as the White House seeks to show progress in the eight-month war. Any attack could risk Iranian retaliation, higher oil prices and renewed political backlash. All you need to know.

Trump attempting to project strength ahead of midterms Administration officials have acknowledged that limited military action alone would be unlikely to force Tehran back to negotiations, reopen the Strait of Hormuz or bring down gasoline prices before Election Day. Supporters of the idea, however, believe a limited operation could allow Trump to project strength and claim progress before voters head to the polls. A more extensive military campaign could then follow the midterms. Trump has repeatedly suggested that the conflict could resume after the election. In a recent interview with Time, he said the US had been “stocking up for the last six months”. Last week, he said the US would win the war “right after the election”, while adding, “Maybe before the election.” Also read | 100 victory claims, 200+ days of war: Is Trump's Iran gamble turning into a midterm nightmare? Iran war becomes US election issue The conflict has become a growing political liability for Republicans as higher oil and gasoline prices weigh on voters. Oil prices surged to nearly $118 a barrel earlier in the conflict and have remained around $100 since then. US gasoline prices are now averaging $4.37 a gallon, according to AAA, compared with just under $3 before the US and Israeli strikes began on February 28. Energy analysts have warned that renewed military action could push prices higher. The US Energy Information Administration has also found that crude prices have typically risen when American strikes resume after pauses. Trump's approval rating, meanwhile, is at a record low thanks to these rising prices. A Reuters/Ipsos poll released in September put the second-term president's approval rating at a new low of 32 per cent, while Democrats led Republicans by eight points among registered voters. The poll results also show that only 34 per cent of Americans support Trump's handling of the Iran war, and just 17 per cent approve of his handling of the cost of living. Another poll by CNN/SSRS also showed similar results. It could also further strain American weapons stocks. “The military action has done nothing to drive down oil prices; in fact, it has done the opposite,” Will Walldorf, an international-affairs professor at Wake Forest University and senior fellow at Defense Priorities, said. Washington is simultaneously pursuing indirect talks with Tehran, but major differences remain over a cease-fire, the US blockade of the Strait of Hormuz and reopening the vital waterway.

President Donald Trump on Wednesday distanced himself from work carried out by two of his senior political advisers for the pro-Russian government of Republika Srpska in the Balkans, saying he was unaware of their outside consulting activities. Trump identified James Blair and Chris LaCivita, who are helping oversee the Trump political operation's strategy for the midterm elections, as ‘outside consultants’ and said he did not know who else they worked for. He wrote on social media that he did “not have any idea who else they work for but will, on reflection, ask them and, if there’s a conflict, I will terminate them, immediately!” Trump's comments came after a report revealed that Blair and LaCivita had each been paid hundreds of thousands of dollars to advise the government of Republika Srpska on voting issues ahead of elections held there Sunday. Republika Srpska is one of two political entities within Bosnia and Herzegovina, created under the US-backed Dayton Accords peace agreement in 1995. The two political consultants were reportedly paid through a Washington-based law firm hired by the Republika Srpska government for election-related advice. Neither Blair nor LaCivita responded to questions about whether they had discussed the work with Trump or whether they planned to stop their outside consulting activities. Also Read: Trump to honour Elon Musk, Sergey Brin and Jensen Huang with top science honour at White House.
Trump questioned over potential conflict
The White House, when asked whether Trump had discussed the matter with the two advisers, referred reporters to his social media statement. Asked later whether the outside work represented a conflict of interest, Trump gave a noncommittal response. “If I thought they had a conflict,” the president said, “I would terminate, but all they are is consultants.” The episode has drawn attention because Blair and LaCivita are playing central roles in Trump's political operation ahead of the US midterm elections. The two advisers are helping direct MAGA Inc., the Trump-backed super PAC that is spending heavily to support Republican candidates. Critics, including some Republicans, have questioned whether their work abroad demonstrates a lack of focus on Trump's efforts to prevent significant Republican losses in the midterms. A spokesman for MAGA Inc. did not respond to a request for comment. The spokesman had previously told The Times that Blair and LaCivita remained involved in the super PAC's political work despite traveling to Republika Srpska for the elections. They returned to the United States on Monday.
Who are Trump's advisers?
Blair served as political director of Trump's 2024 presidential campaign before leaving his position as a White House deputy chief of staff in the spring to lead MAGA Inc. LaCivita, who co-managed Trump's 2024 campaign, serves as a senior adviser to the super PAC. Their work in Republika Srpska has attracted particular scrutiny because the territory's nationalist, pro-Russian ruling party has cultivated relationships with Trump and his allies for years. The party secured decisive victories in Sunday's elections. In a victory speech later that day, party leader Milorad Dodik credited Trump with helping create the political conditions that contributed to the party's success. Dodik had been under US sanctions for years over accusations that he undermined the Dayton peace agreement. The Trump administration lifted those sanctions last year after the Srpska government funded an influence campaign that enlisted several Trump allies. Blair and LaCivita were not involved in the campaign to remove the sanctions.

What once was the peak, is now just the beginning.

Paramount and Warner Bros. shaped over a century of culture. By combining them, we aren't rewriting history — we're equipping these iconic studios with a more powerful engine. Together, we are Skydance: a creative-first home for bold, quality storytelling.

We chose this name for a few important reasons. First and foremost, as we bring Paramount and Warner Bros. together, we wanted to preserve what has made each of these studios iconic. Both have distinct identities, extraordinary legacies and brands that have resonated with audiences for generations. We never wanted a new corporate identity to diminish, alter or overshadow either one. Instead, we wanted a name that would give the combined company an identity of its own while allowing Paramount and Warner Bros. — and all our extraordinary brands — to remain in the spotlight.

We have big goals for Skydance, and we intend to pursue them with passion, imagination and a willingness to take smart risks. At the same time, we will honor what makes Paramount and Warner Bros. special — giving both studios the opportunity to grow, tell more great stories and bring those stories to even broader audiences around the world, powered by the scale and capabilities of Skydance.

Trump's decision comes after Republicans and Democrats alike have questioned the administration’s multimillion-dollar television advertising effort. However, the White House has defended the spots as public service announcements. “The Radical Left is upset with the fact that I am taking Ads, which I consider to be a positive promotion for our Great U.S.A., and paying for them with U.S.A. money. This is a rather standard thing to do but, rather than doing that, although nothing will make them happy, I have decided to do the Patriotic Ads, among others, and pay for them myself, and with money I raised for MAGA, Inc. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!” Trump said in a post on Truth Social. Also read: What is ‘Britannia Shield’? As of last week, at least 13 campaign-style ads promoting Trump and his policies were created. Meanwhile, clips of 12 of the ads were obtained, ranging from 15 seconds to three minutes long, two of which have already aired. Each ad ends with the words “Paid for by the U.S. Government” at the bottom of the screen. Another ad, “Final Battle,” which is not in the Dropbox account, has also aired in recent weeks. Although the ads vary in theme, many share common elements: footage of the president, audio clips of favourable news coverage, and patriotic visuals such as a graduation cap toss at a military ceremony, fireworks lighting up Mount Rushmore, and military flyovers.
Pro-Trump meme group
According to several media reports, Trump has been closely involved in the project, including choosing the imagery and footage himself. Two of his advisers said the White House video team, a unit within the communications office that handles the administration's public messaging, has been producing the ads in-house, though at least one came from a pro-Trump meme group. Watchdog organisations argue the ads clearly break appropriations law, which bars the use of federal money for propaganda or partisan messaging. It remains uncertain, however, whether outside groups have the legal standing to sue. The ads have drawn criticism from both parties, but Congress, which these groups saw as best positioned to hold the administration accountable, took no action to stop them before the midterms.

The 2026 Nobel Peace Prize race has taken an unexpected turn, with the International Space Station (ISS) emerging as a potential contender alongside political leaders, humanitarian organisations and international institutions. The Norwegian Nobel Committee is scheduled to announce this year's Peace Prize winner in Oslo on October 9. A total of 287 eligible nominations were submitted, including 208 individuals and 79 organisations. However, the official list of nominees will remain confidential for 50 years. As a result, names mentioned in expert assessments, prediction markets and public discussions should not be considered confirmed nominees.
Why the ISS is being considered?
The International Space Station has attracted attention as a symbol of international cooperation amid growing geopolitical tensions. The orbiting laboratory has brought together astronauts and scientists from the United States, Russia, Europe, Japan and Canada, providing a rare example of countries with significant political differences maintaining cooperation on a shared peaceful project. According to Haakon Gjerløw, acting director of the Peace Research Institute Oslo (PRIO), the ISS represents an unusual example of geopolitical rivals continuing to work together. The station has remained continuously occupied since November 2000, making it one of the longest-running examples of international scientific cooperation. If recognised, the ISS would likely be honoured not for a single scientific breakthrough but for representing the broader principle that countries with serious political disagreements can continue cooperating on projects intended to benefit humanity.
Donald Trump in the Nobel Peace Prize race
US President Donald Trump is also being discussed as a potential contender for the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize. Trump has repeatedly expressed his desire to receive the award, while reports indicate that several political figures have nominated him. However, experts cited in recent assessments have generally viewed his chances as relatively low. The ongoing US-Israel-led conflict with Iran is among the factors that could affect Trump's prospects. Ultimately, the Nobel Committee's decision is independent of public statements or claims about individual nominations. Also Read: New York declares statewide disaster emergency over measles outbreak. Carney's name has appeared in prediction markets and expert discussions, although there is no public confirmation that he has been shortlisted by the Nobel Committee. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Oleksandrovych Zelenskyy and Pope Leo have also been mentioned as possible contenders. Pope Leo, the first US-born pope, has repeatedly spoken about the war in West Asia, at times taking positions that have put him at odds with Trump.
Humanitarian groups and international institutions
Several humanitarian organisations and individuals are also being discussed in connection with the 2026 Peace Prize.Potential contenders include Save the Children, Ukrainian children's rights advocate Mykola Kuleba, Sudan's Emergency Response Rooms and the Committee to Protect Journalists. International judicial institutions are also attracting attention. The International Court of Justice (ICJ) and International Criminal Court (ICC) have appeared in expert predictions, reflecting the growing focus on international law, accountability and efforts to resolve conflicts through legal institutions.
Nobel Peace Prize to be announced October 9
The Nobel Peace Prize remains one of the world's most closely watched awards, in part because the Norwegian Nobel Committee can make unexpected choices. With the ISS, political leaders, humanitarian organisations and international courts all featuring in discussions about the 2026 prize, this year's race has produced an unusually diverse field of potential contenders. The winner will be announced in Oslo on October 9.

At the same time, a notable number of Republicans, including some who have long stood by him, have started publicly parting ways with the president on major policy issues.

Recent polling from several sources shows Trump's approval ratings sinking to some of the lowest points of his presidency, with voters expressing growing dissatisfaction over his handling of the economy, the war with Iran, and trade policy. At the same time, a notable number of Republicans, including some who have long stood by him, have started publicly parting ways with the president on major policy issues.

Trump's larger swing includes stops in Alaska, Florida, Iowa, Ohio and Texas, several of which were once considered safely red but have since become competitive as the US President's net approval rating has fallen sharply.

The Pentagon on Thursday said that it has awarded Raytheon a $24.4 billion contract to accelerate production of SM-6 missiles as the US moves to replace the large amount of munitions expended during the conflict with Iran. These missiles serve as key weapons for both anti-air and anti-surface warfare. "This five-year agreement, with two additional option years, will drive faster production," the Pentagon said in a statement. "The deal provides the defence industry with the long-term predictability needed to expand workforce capacity and secure critical supply chains," the statement added. Also read: Trump doesn't rule out invoking Insurrection Act during midterms. However, the Pentagon's inspector general reported last month that munitions used in what was officially designated Operation Epic Fury have led to significant gaps in strategic inventory and exposed weaknesses in the industrial base's ability to keep pace with resupply needs. According to the Congressional Budget Office report, the hit to missile defence supplies will leave the United States with a reduced inventory of interceptors for several years. In addition, Iran continues to put pressure on the Hormuz more than seven months after the initial US and Israeli attacks on the Islamic Republic, while Washington is blockading Iran's ports. Meanwhile, Trump said he expects to continue bombing Iran by late November. The move will set the stage for further Iranian strikes and more expenditures of American munitions.

US President Donald Trump on Thursday (Oct 1) reacted with disbelief to the failed execution of Tennessee death row inmate Christa Pike, who remained alive even after receiving two doses of the lethal injection drug pentobarbital. “How does that happen?” Trump said when asked about the case while speaking to reporters in Texas. “Should be easy to do. US President Donald Trump has announced plans for a 32-day campaign tour across the country as Republicans prepare for the upcoming November midterm elections, which will determine control of Congress. The midterms are widely viewed as an important test of Trump’s second-term presidency and could determine whether his legislative agenda encounters greater resistance over the next two years. Trump has also suggested that Democrats could pursue another impeachment effort if they win control of both the House of Representatives and Senate. Despite concerns within Republican ranks, Trump struck an optimistic tone while speaking to reporters on Tuesday. He also rejected suggestions that Republican candidates are attempting to distance themselves from his administration ahead of the elections. “You love me, and I love them,” Trump said, as he outlined his plans for a multi-state tour to support Republican midterm contenders. “Just so you understand, they all want me to go. I’m one person. They all want me to go campaign,” he added. Also Read: Christa Pike still alive after two lethal injections, lawyers seek emergency stay Trump described the planned campaign schedule as a ‘literally a 32-day tour’, with stops expected in states including Texas and Ohio, where competitive races are underway. His planned appearances come as Republicans seek to maintain their control of both chambers of Congress and defend vulnerable seats across the country. Trump's standing with voters has also become a major focus ahead of the midterms. Recent polling has indicated declining approval, while voters have cited concerns about the cost of living and economic conditions. A Wall Street Journal poll released last week put Trump's approval rating at 37 per cent. According to the poll, that was the lowest approval rating recorded for a president approaching the midterm elections since the newspaper started conducting the survey in 1990, when George HW Bush was president. Despite the challenges facing Republicans, Trump has continued to make himself a central figure in the party's midterm campaign strategy.

Tesla boss Elon Musk will be back in the White House as War Secretary Pete Hegseth announced that he will co-lead Project Meridian, a new Pentagon initiative tasked with looking at the future of warfare in the US. Essentially, it means he will look into years ahead to identify emerging domains of warfare and the capabilities the US military will need to dominate them. This assessment will help the Pentagon to determine which weapons and technology American troops will need to fight the wars of the future. Hegseth also announced the establishment of the Autonomous Warfare Command (AUTOWARCOM), a brand-new four-star combatant command endowed with "service-like authorities" designed to rapidly scale autonomous and robotic capabilities across the joint forces. The department will also introduce dedicated occupational frameworks to build career tracks for a new generation of "autonomous warfighters." Also Read: Trump sends 'wish him well' message for Elon Musk after breakup: Tesla boss gives one-word response
Who are the part of this team?
Musk, the former leader of the Trump administration's Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), will lead the effort alongside defense tech billionaire Palmer Luckey and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich under the direction of War Department Chief Technology Officer Emil Michael. US President Donald Trump offered the most bizarre diversion when a reporter from Africa asked about the ongoing Rwanda-Congo conflict. White House correspondent Hariana Verás, the first African journalist accredited to the White House, told Trump that the peace agreement brokered by him between the presidents of Congo and Rwanda was being violated, and asked whether he intended to do anything about it, telling Trump that "Rwanda is still violating." "You, among many other administrations … you are the only one who started to do something to end the 30-year war in the [Democratic Republic of Congo]," said Verás. The peace deal was signed at the WHite House in December and again in March. However, it hasn't been implemented, with the conflict leaving more than seven million people displaced, as per the Center on Foreign Relations. “Yeah, we’re going to stop it, if there is a violation, we know about it,” the president said. “We ended the war with Congo and Rwanda, and they both signed it and both agreed, so, well, look, I just heard about it a little while ago; if there’s a problem, we’ll stop it.” Veras told him that she had witnessed "Rwanda killing a lot of Congolese."
