US President Donald Trump on Saturday (Sept 20) strongly defended the artificial intelligence industry and data centres, saying he would not allow efforts to weaken or destroy the sector. US President Donald Trump has extended the H-1B visa petitions for another year, imposing a $100,000 payment and continuing the controversial immigration restriction until September 21, 2027. The development unfolded as legal challenges continue in US courts. In response, the White House said Trump had increased the executive order behind the fee, issued in September 2025, which was set to expire this month. The H-1B programme authorises US employers to employ skilled workers from different countries, including technology professionals, for several years. The extension plays a significant role for Indian professionals as it covers the largest share of approved H-1B beneficiaries by country of birth. Also read: Iran rebuilding nuclear facilities? Since many Indian applicants are based outside the US and would require to enter the country to take H-1B opportunities, the ongoing $100,000 fee could carry significant implications for both employers and prospective visa holders. The White House said the original proclamation, issued in September 2025, aimed at curbing what the administration called abuses of the H-1B system, particularly by IT staffing and outsourcing firms. The proclamation alleged that some companies had used H-1B workers to fill lower-paying roles and, in certain cases, subsequently moved those jobs overseas. According to the administration, this practice had helped suppress wages and made it harder for some US workers and recent STEM graduates to secure employment. The administration also noted that more than 700 petitions have incurred the $100,000 fee since the restriction took effect on September 21, 2025. Also read: Trump will receive Xi at airport during his state visit. US President Donald Trump has announced what he calls an “Infinite Life” agreement with Denmark and Greenland, claiming it gives the United States permanent control over Greenland’s security. He also said the agreement would prevent any US adversary from establishing a military base, maintaining a military presence or making sensitive investments in Greenland without Washington’s written approval. A federal judge has warned US Attorney General Todd Blanche that he could face civil contempt proceedings if the Justice Department fails to comply with court orders concerning the release and review of Jeffrey Epstein-related files.US District Judge Emmet Sullivan, in a 20-page order on Wednesday (Sep 16) said that a contempt finding would be “premature” at this stage, but warned that it could become appropriate if Blanche does not comply with the court’s renewed directives. The case could result in the Justice Department being required to release additional Epstein records or justify and remove redactions that the court finds unlawful.“Courts have the inherent power to enforce compliance with their lawful orders through civil contempt,” Sullivan wrote. The warning comes in a lawsuit filed by independent journalist Katie Phang, who alleges that the DOJ has not fully complied with the Epstein Files Transparency Act, which Congress passed last year.Judge rejects parts of DOJ's justificationSullivan said the Justice Department had provided sufficient documentation to establish that some redactions were made to protect survivors' privacy. The issue had previously been raised during proceedings in the case, with the judge seeking access to the underlying notes so the court could independently assess the DOJ's claims.Sullivan also rejected the department's explanation for not reviewing Epstein-related material written in foreign languages, which DOJ had argued was impractical for a first-level reviewer to assess. At the same time, the judge acknowledged that some redactions covering the names and email addresses of government attorneys and law enforcement personnel were required under the department's own review rules.DOJ pushes backThe Justice Department has maintained that its redactions comply with the law and has argued that protecting victims' identities is a key consideration.A DOJ spokesperson told Axios: “Our filings will speak for themselves.” The department also said it had provided the judge with evidence concerning redacted victim names and argued that the lawsuit sought to unmask victims' identities. The dispute is part of a broader legal and political fight over the release of Epstein records. ‘I have a big decision coming up’: Trump says he’s approaching major ‘crossroad’ in Iran war

Amid deepening of ties between India and Russia, more American tariffs loom large... The US House of Representatives has now advanced a key legislation which will come up for a final vote on Wednesday US time. If cleared, countries like India and China can face US tariffs up to a staggering 100%. This bill, known as the Lindsey Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act, was passed by the US Senate in August. It allows US President Donald Trump to impose up to 100% tariffs on countries under two scenarios. First, the country should have made new purchases of oil or natural gas from Russia, and be among their five largest importers in the last 12 months. Alternatively, it applies to the top five countries facilitating Russian oil sanctions evasion in the last 12 months. As China remains the largest importer of Russian crude oil, followed by India, they are likely to be impacted by this... But, a key question arises... Will this bill be used to leverage US interests during trade talks with countries like China and India? It is worth noting that Xi is set to meet Trump on September 24. Opposing this bill though, Democrats warned that enhanced tariffs would drive up gas and food prices in US, adding to the woes of American households. However, the resolution to advance the bill was approved by a 214 to 211 vote with two democratic lawmakers voting in favour of the legislation. Now, Trump's push for tariffs is not new. In August last year, US initially imposed a 25% tariff on the import of Indian goods before raising it to 50% over purchase of Russian oil. In February this year, Trump reduced the tariff to 18% after both countries reached a framework for an interim trade agreement. But after the US Supreme Court struck down Trump's sweeping global tariffs, India is subject to a 10% tariff rate. Now, Russia became a major alternative source of crude oil for India owing to disruption of energy supplies from West Asia due to the war. In July, Russia accounted for over half of India's share of crude oil imports. Russian imports were up more than 62% as compared a year ago. In August though, Russian oil imports fell by 26%. America's move also assumes significance, as it comes just days after India, Russia, China and other key countries of the Global South reaffirmed their unity at the BRICS Summit. The bonhomie between PM Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin was on display yet again. The two leaders reviewed progress in multiple areas including economy, defence, energy, space, skill mobility and people-to-people exchanges. Additionally, they also shared perspectives on the situation in West Asia as well as Black Sea, where multiple Indian seafarers have lost their lives due to the ongoing Iran and Russia-Ukraine wars. While agreeing to strengthen the strategic partnership between the two countries, PM Modi reiterated the role of diplomacy in resolving conflicts and expressed India's willingness to assist in peace efforts. While the bill is yet to become a law, the question for India remains — How much Russian oil can it continue to buy without triggering US pressure over the pending trade agreement....

Trump Jr’s brother Eric, also distanced himself from Kremlev. “Eric has absolutely no clue who this person is, nor has never heard his name,” his spokesman told ProPublica. The necessity for issuing a statement was because this Russian oligarch is accused leading an organization called – Healthy Fatherland – that facilitates the abduction of Ukrainian children from occupied territories while Melania Trump leads a campaign to reunite children who have been kidnapped from Ukraine and taken to Russia during the ongoing war.
Who is Umar Kremlev?
Umar Kremlev is the head of the International Boxing Association (IBA), a sporting body that has been backed by the state-owned Russian energy company Gazprom. Statement by Melania Trump and Eric A statement from First Lady Melania Trump's office states: "Mrs. Trump does not, and has never had, a relationship with Mr. Kremlev. Mrs. Trump played no role whatsoever in organizing the wedding event and was not privy to any aspect of its financial planning." Trump Jr’s brother Eric, also distanced himself from Kremlev. According to ProPublica, the wedding payments came from an IBA-affiliated entity in Dubai that the boxing association uses for financial transactions. He is believed to one from Putin's inner circle. He reportedly went to China as part of a delegation accompanying Putin, and the month prior the Russian president had bestowed him with a state honor, the Order of Friendship. The Ukrainian government has imposed sanctions on Kremlev, citing his closeness to Putin and Russian security services.

Donald Trump Jr and wife Bettina confirmed that Russian oligarch Umar Kremlev helped pay for their Bahamas wedding celebrations, calling it a generous gift from a friend. Kremlev’s ties to Putin have prompted statements from Melania Trump and Eric distancing themselves.

Donald Trump says AI safety concerns are a hoax. To what extent has China helped Iran during the ongoing West Asia war? While a new report linked high-quality satellite imagery provided by Chinese entities to a deadly Iranian ballistic missile and drone strike on Jordan's Muwaffaq Salti air base, US President Donald Trump downplayed its impact. In a social media post, Zelensky demanded that partners “ensure that Russia genuinely refrains from striking our electricity system, other energy facilities, critical infrastructure, and food supply routes; then, of course, we are ready to ensure a corresponding halt to our strikes.” Also Read: Trump rejects AI guardrails, says he stopped AI firms from doing ‘bad things’ Russia welcomed Trump's call on Ukraine Russian officials previously signalled resistance to isolated, short-term truces; however, the Kremlin on Monday welcomed US President Donald Trump calling on Ukraine to halt strikes on Russia's diesel-producing ‌facilities. Though, there is no official response from the Russian side about halting strikes at Ukrainian energy facilities. "Any call on the Kyiv regime ‌to stop attacks on civilian economic infrastructure can only be welcomed," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told a daily conference call with reporters. However, contrary to Trump's claim, Peskov said that the situation in the energy market is due to the “instability and new rounds of escalation in the Persian Gulf region”. He added that Russia is considering an export ban on diesel to boost domestic production.

Donald Trump claimed Russia and Ukraine agreed to halt strikes on energy infrastructure, but Zelensky said no final deal is in place and Kyiv remains sceptical.

US President Donald Trump’s son-in-law and special adviser, Jared Kushner, said that the international pressure fallout from Israel’s strike in Doha last year allowed the US to push Israel towards a Gaza agreement. In a video appearance at a conference in Kyiv over the weekend, Kushner stated that Washington utilised the situation created by the strike to increase pressure on Israel and move it towards a deal. Kushner's statements were in connection to the September 2025 military strike in Doha, Qatar, where Israeli warplanes targeted senior Hamas leaders in Doha, Qatar. However, the strike failed to eliminate the top leadership, resulting instead in the deaths of lower-ranking members and a Qatari security officer. “We used that dynamic in order to push them into a deal that now today they’re quite happy with,” he said. “At the time, they were a little uncomfortable with kind of what we were pushing them to do," Kushner said, adding that the attack, however, proved beneficial for Israel as well as the people of Gaza with the formation of new government. “Ultimately, it turned out to be great for them,” he said of Israel. “And it turned out to be great for the people of Gaza, because now we have a new government there.” Kushner did not hold back in his assessment of Israel's operation in Doha. “Israel did the strike in Doha, which was a terrible thing,” Kushner said. “And obviously, it was unsuccessful as a military operation. And that led to Israel being globally isolated.” He indicated that the new governing structure in Gaza was expected to step in as progress is made on demilitarisation efforts, stating that this new setup is set to take over soon once headway is made on that front. Also read: Saudi Arabia discovers 110 million tonnes of Uranium-rich ore in Madinah region
What is BRICS statement targeting Israel?
The 140-point document of the BRICS Summit mostly deals with broad global issues, trade between countries, rules around AI, fighting terrorism, and reforming the United Nations, In the document, paragraphs 30 through 35 highlights a rare and unequivocal rebuke of Israel's interests under Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, in West Asia. US President Donald Trump has hit back at the New York Times over an investigative report critical of the deteriorating condition of the newly renovated Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, published on the 25th anniversary of 9/11.
