Trump mulling limited strikes to prevent Iran from rebuilding military capabilities in Strait of Hormuz

The US Iran war has witnessed a brief exchange of strikes again.Days after Donald Trump threatened unprecedented economic sanctions on Iran, and the U.S. Treasury slapped sanctions on 60 individuals and entities, the West Asia region once again witnessed military action. This time, the target for American troops was the Larak Island.US military struck two Iranian missile launchers on Larak Island, and later said that the strikes were to prevent Iran from deploying sea mines into the Strait of Hormuz. President Donald Trump has vowed retaliation after Iran launched missile strikes targeting US forces in Jordan, saying Washington will respond forcefully while leaving open the possibility of renewed talks with Tehran. "We're going to hit them hard," Trump was quoted as saying to Fox News' Trey Yingst in a phone call on Monday. “There will be a response.” Trump said US forces intercepted most of the missiles fired overnight, with one missile allowed to pass through air defenses because it was not expected to strike a target. According to a US source cited by Fox News, Iran fired at least eight ballistic missiles at US forces in Jordan on Sunday. The attack reportedly caused no significant impact. The Iranian missile barrage came after US forces carried out a strike against Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps launchers on Larak Island. American officials said the operation followed the identification of preparations for an IRGC rocket launch intended to deploy new sea mines in the Strait of Hormuz. Also Read: Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian asks PM Narendra Modi to use India’s influence to end West Asia war

US Central Command described the operation as ‘limited, precise action’ against minelaying forces that posed an ‘imminent threat’ to commercial shipping and the free flow of global commerce. Despite the escalating military confrontation, Trump indicated that there could still be an opening for negotiations. "They want to meet so badly," Trump said. "I just don't know if you can count on a deal with them. The sanctions are kicking in really strongly." Iran is also facing increasing economic pressure as US sanctions weigh on the country's oil exports and broader economy. Iranian officials have increasingly acknowledged the impact of the sanctions, while regional intelligence sources have warned that worsening economic conditions could fuel renewed unrest. The Iranian rial has fallen to about 2.1 million per US dollar, marking a historic low and underscoring the depth of the country's economic difficulties. Although Tehran is facing mounting financial pressure, Iranian officials have shown no clear indication that they are prepared to alter their position or reach an agreement with Washington. The latest exchange of strikes has therefore heightened fears of a broader regional escalation, particularly around the Strait of Hormuz, a critical route for global energy and commercial shipping.

U.S. President Donald Trump has intensified his criticism of the media, threatening to involve the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) against NBC's Meet the Press moderator Kristen Welker. Trump objected to Welker's description of his endorsement record as producing "mixed results," calling the remark inaccurate and politically motivated. In a social media post, Trump claimed his endorsements have a near-perfect success rate and urged FCC Chairman Brendan Carr to take action. The latest comments have reignited debate over press freedom, media criticism and the relationship between political leaders and news organizations in the United States.

The CFTC said Perez was directed to pay the money he made in profits, $107,539.02, along with a civil penalty of $65,000. He has also been barred from trading on prediction markets for the next three years.

$209 billion for Venezuela? Delcy Rodriguez reveals what Caracas stands to gain from Trump's oil deal

WASHINGTON – Six months into the war U.S. President Donald Trump launched on Iran, the conflict is at an impasse, and the American leader has switched his campaign for global dominance to a new target – Canada. At issue is trade between the two neighbours, who share the world’s longest border and in the past have been close and friendly allies. Canada is the second biggest trade partner of the United States, slightly behind Mexico. Since Trump came into office in his first term, he has repeatedly suggested that the United States annex Canada and turn it into the 51st U.S. state. Canadian governments and most of the public reject the idea and find it offensive, as they do Trump’s habit of calling Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and his predecessor Justin Trudeau “governors”. Trade negotiations, prompted by new U.S. tariffs on Canada (50 percent on hundreds of products), collapsed in the final hour of an August 21 deadline when the Americans added conditions to the deal the Canadians found unacceptable. The tariffs took effect the following day. Canada responded that it would retaliate “dollar for dollar” with tariffs to take effect on September 8, effectively the start of a full-blown trade war unless either side makes concessions. But that appears unlikely. No further meetings are scheduled. Trump’s taunts took on a sharper edge this week when he complained that “I deal with many countries and Canada is easily the most difficult and unreasonable.” To further irritate his northern neighbour, he issued an executive order renaming Lake Ontario to “Lake America.”Also read | US-Canada trade war: Canada hits back as Trump orders Lake Ontario renamed 'Lake America' The lake straddles the U.S.-Canadian border, and roughly 75 percent of its surface belongs to the Canadian province of Ontario. Trump’s order applies to federal maps and databases from which a small army of Department of the Interior bureaucrats have to remove references to Lake Ontario. U.S. government agencies and official military or diplomatic communications must call the body of water Lake America. Individual states have no obligation to comply with the order. Kathy Hochul, the governor of New York State, the only American state that borders the lake, promptly declared she would ignore the name change. In a blistering televised speech after the collapse of the Washington talks, Carney reminded his citizens that after taking office in 2025, he had warned that “America is trying to break us so that they can own us. And I promised, ‘That will never, ever happen.’ We are keeping that promise.” It was a bold promise in a dispute that pitches Canada against a superpower neighbour with an economy 13 times larger and a population of 340 million (Canada has 40 million) that turns the U.S. into the world’s richest market. The Wall Street Journal reminded its readers that Trump had complained about an editorial last year that called tariffs against Canada and Mexico “the dumbest trade war in history.” After the collapse of the negotiations, “it got dumber this weekend as Mr. Trump escalated with another round of border taxes on Canadian imports, a mere 10 weeks before midterm elections.” The reference is for elections on November 3 for Congress – all 435 seats of the House of Representatives and a number of contested seats in the Senate. Analysts predict that the Republican Party will lose its majority in the House, partly because of the deeply unpopular war against Iran. Unlike renaming a border lake, a presidential executive order cannot end the conflict with Iran. Iran responded to a furious bombing campaign by the U.S. and Israel by deploying a geographic weapon more powerful than a nuclear bomb: the Strait of Hormuz, the narrow waterway that carried before the war 20 percent of the world’s oil, much of the world’s the world’s fertilizer, and 19 per cent of liquefied natural gas. Iran’s closure of the Strait prompted a profound crisis in the global economy, from a supply shock in energy markets and disruptions to global agriculture and food shortages. In the United States, it led to sharply higher prices for petrol and an overall higher cost of living. The deeply unpopular war and the way he handled it drove Trump’s approval rating down to 33 percent, its lowest in his two terms. Democrats hoping to take over the House have plenty of ammunition for the election campaign. That includes reminders that the president has consistently lied about the state of the war he announced with a pre-dawn social media posting on February 28. It said that war was necessary “to defend the American people by eliminating imminent threats from the Iranian regime.” Today, on the 60th day since the start of the war, there still has not been a convincing explanation of what was ”imminent” about the threat from Iran. After all, Trump boasted about the “total and complete obliteration” of Iran’s nuclear capacities after a 12-day joint U.S.-Israeli bombing campaign in June 2025. Within hours of the war posting, Trump announced that Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khomeini, “one of the most evil people in History,” had been killed. That was followed four days later by “we have won.” Then came proclamations of victory on an almost weekly basis. Beginning on March 23, Trump said on 38 different occasions that the U.S. and Iran were close to a ceasefire agreement after the Iranians “begged” for talks. There were minor changes in the rhetoric: “We are very close” and “it’s practically done” and “just the final details are missing.” But the man who wrote “The Art of the Deal” was left without a deal. The Strait of Hormuz is no longer the open international waterway it was before February 28. Who controls it remains a matter of dispute. What is not in dispute is that the U.S. is stuck in a stalemate and the kind of open-ended Middle Eastern conflict Trump promised to avoid when he campaigned for his second term. He’ll face frequent reminders of that promise between now and November.

Deal follows talks over major Venezuelan oil fields
The announcement follows reports that Washington and Caracas had been discussing a much larger arrangement involving Venezuelan oil production.Previously, Axios reported that the two countries were negotiating over a dozen productive oil fields holding around 90 billion barrels of proven reserves, or roughly a third of Venezuela's total proven reserves of 300 billion barrels.Under the reported structure, private companies, including US firms, would receive ownership stakes and develop the fields, with more oil revenue flowing back to Venezuela.Trump's announcement referred to majority control of 65 billion barrels of proven reserves, but the material provided does not explain how that figure relates to the previously reported 90 billion barrels. The deal also comes after the US ousted and captured longtime Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro in January. His former vice president, Delcy Rodriguez, remained as interim leader on condition that she cooperate with Washington.

As the US-Canada trade war intensifies, the battle is not limited to tariffs alone. The Trump administration again used social media to boast of its supposed triumph over Canada. This time though there was a twist in the tale. Take a look at this visual. The White House posted a photo of a bald eagle pinning a Canada goose to the ground. This was seen as a bid to project US dominance over Canada as the bald eagle is strongly associated with US being its national bird. However, the White House's victory symbol turned into an unexpected Canadian comeback story. Build Canada, a Canadian government agency responded to this with another picture which depicts a very different tale. It shows the Canada goose raising its wing in an apparent attack. According to some social media users, both these photos were from a 20-minute faceoff between these two birds on frozen Lake Ontario, captured by a photographer over a year ago. While the bald eagle had an upper hand in this fight for a while, the goose fought back after which the eagle was forced to retreat. This metaphor of resistance unfolded in reality earlier this week when Canada announced retaliatory tariffs on around 700 US. goods tanging between 15 to 50 percent from September 8 onwards. American steel, aluminum, furniture, clothing, electronics and cheese will now be subjected to tariffs. Canada also announced an aid package of 5.4 billion US dollars for workers and firms hit by US tariffs. But how did Trump retaliate? By renaming a lake! He signed an executive order changing the name of Lake Ontario to Lake America. The US president attributed this move to Canada shortchanging America on trade as well as military issues. It borders New York state in America and Ontario province in Canada. According to reports, it has been called Lake Ontario since the 17th century and was named by Canada's indigenous population. Last year too, the US president stirred a row by renaming the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America. However, Trump suggested that his push to rename water bodies may not be finished. Listen in to what he said. The move to rename Lake Ontario immediately triggered a pushback from Canada's PM. Mark Carney said and I am quoting him, “The name is more than 400 years old, predating both the confederation of Canada and the Declaration of Independence of The United States of America.” Snubbing Trump further, Carney stressed that Canadians will continue to call it Lake Ontario. Public opinion on this issue was also largely in favour of Carney's stance. The row originally started with a breakdown in the trade talks between the two countries. While the Canadian PM slammed US for treating his country like a subsidiary and accused it of trying to destroy its key industries, the US accused him of walking away from the deal for political purposes. While Trump initially imposed a 50% tariff on around 20 billion dollars of Canadian goods, he followed it up by enhancing the tariffs on all Canadian cars, trucks, automobile parts and steel to 50%. With Canada's subsequent retaliatory measures, it is amply clear that it won't give in to US pressure any time soon.

The White House posted a photo of a bald eagle pinning a Canada goose to the ground. This was seen as a bid to project US dominance over Canada as the bald eagle is strongly associated with US being its national bird

Donald Trump has mastered the politics of attention. Give him a controversy, a camera and a social-media account, and he can turn almost anything into a Trump headline. Now, even Lake Ontario has become part of the brand. Trump has formally ordered the US government to rename it Lake America, despite Canada making clear it will continue calling it Lake Ontario. The move comes amid an escalating trade fight with Ottawa. But here is the uncomfortable question: Is this governing, or marketing? Because Americans are not standing in grocery aisles wondering what the next landmark will be called. They are wondering why everything costs so much. They want affordability. They want stability. They want results. Instead, they are getting a presidency increasingly consumed by personal branding, confrontation and spectacle. Look at the Kennedy Center. Trump’s name has been placed at the center of another political and cultural battle, while fresh reporting suggests the institution’s finances deteriorated sharply following the takeover and name change. And that is the danger of making yourself the story. When every institution becomes a battlefield and every disagreement becomes personal, the presidency risks becoming less about governing and more about maintaining the Trump brand.

Yes, pandering works. It can energize a base. It can dominate the news cycle. It can turn frustration into political loyalty. But eventually, voters ask a more brutal question: What did all that noise actually deliver? And perhaps the clearest warning sign is coming from Corporate America. Companies that once cozied up to Trump are now cultivating relationships with Democrats ahead of the midterms, preparing for the possibility of a Democratic-controlled House, and the investigations and subpoenas that could follow. That is not necessarily ideological conversion. It is political insurance. And when corporate America starts hedging its bets, it suggests even Trump's most powerful allies understand that political power can change very quickly. So, Mr President, the question is no longer whether you can command attention. You clearly can. The question is whether attention is enough. Because America does not need a president who is constantly marketing himself. It needs a president who can make life better for the people being marketed to. The midterms may provide the answer. The brand is Trump. But the bill is America's. Disclaimer: The views of the writer do not represent the views of WION or ZMCL. Nor does WION or ZMCL endorse the views of the writer.

Trump’s Lake America controversy raises questions about branding, governance, affordability, the Kennedy Center and shifting corporate support ahead of the midterms

The Verdict: When the president becomes the brand

US President Donald Trump may be heading into the 2026 midterm elections with a problem that could prove costly: women, including white women who helped him expand the Republican coalition in 2024, are showing signs of pulling away. A new national poll shows that white women are falling out of love with Trump, and Democrats may be benefiting from it and are moving from a clear deficit to an eight-point lead among a voting bloc that has long leaned Republican.A national survey of 1,604 women by Bellwether Research and Consulting found that only 32 per cent approve of Trump's job performance. That is well below the roughly 46 per cent of women who backed him in the 2024 presidential election. Even among women who voted for Trump, one in four now disapproves of his performance. The shift is particularly striking among white women, reports The Times. The Bellwether data shows Republicans led Democrats 55 per cent to 44 per cent among white women in 2024. In August 2026, that has flipped, with Democrats ahead 47 per cent to 39 per cent. That is a 19-point swing in the Democratic direction. Also read | US-Canada trade war: Canada hits back as Trump orders Lake Ontario renamed 'Lake America'
Economy is a bigger concern than Trump's cultural agenda
The numbers suggest that household finances may be doing more damage to Trump's standing with women than the cultural issues that have defined much of his second term.In the Bellwether survey, 38 per cent of women named the economy and cost of living as the country's most important issue. While US Vice President JD Vance also reportedly advised Trump against embarking on the war, the US President was ultimately persuaded by the arguments put forth by his secretary of war, Pete Hegseth, and other officials. At a congressional hearing in March, Gabbard herself testified that the regime in Iran appears to be intact. While it is a known fact how Iran targeted multiple US air bases in West Asia, a recent NBC report also threw light on the unprecedented damage caused to US intelligence facilities and surveillance equipment. According to the report, the sites hit by Iranian missile and drone attacks included a Riyadh CIA station and a site in eastern Iraq. Additionally, billions of dollars will be required to repair this damage. Meanwhile, diplomatic efforts continue in full force. After the Pakistani army chief and Omani foreign minister, Qatar's prime minister Al Thani also visited Tehran, where he held talks with Iranian foreign minister Abbas Araghchi. Qatar stated that this visit is aimed at addressing ways to de-escalate tensions in West Asia and ensure freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz. However, with US President Donald Trump making it clear that he is in no hurry to resume talks with Iran, uncertainty in the region is set to persist.

Tulsi Gabbard, who served as the Director of National Intelligence until May, warned Trump about commencing strikes on Iran. She reportedly told him that killing Ali Khamenei would only usher in a more authoritarian government in Iran, which is more likely to seek weapons of mass destruction.

Trump posted an AI-generated image of himself with the caption 'Mission Accomplished', alongside Iran's assassinated ex-supreme leader Ali Khamenei's photo. The post also contains a photo of George Bush, taking a dig at America's unaccomplished mission in Afghanistan. However, this completely sidesteps the fact that the Iran War has failed to achieve its objectives. Now, a new report has revealed how Trump ignored intel warnings that starting a war against Iran could backfire. She reportedly told him that killing Ali Khamenei would only usher in a more authoritarian government in Iran, which is more likely to seek weapons of mass destruction. This is not all. CIA Director John Ratcliffe has reportedly travelled to Moscow for meetings, in what is believed to be his first known trip to Russia since taking charge of the agency. U.S. media reports say Ratcliffe travelled via Latvia aboard a U.S. Air Force C-17 Globemaster III, which landed at Moscow's Vnukovo Airport. The CIA, Pentagon and Kremlin have not publicly confirmed the purpose of the visit. The trip comes as U.S.-brokered Russia-Ukraine peace efforts remain stalled and tensions over Iran add another layer to Washington-Moscow relations.

US President Donald Trump once again said on Wednesday that there will be no “Israel” without him. Speaking with the conservative radio commentator Glenn Beck, he said that if he had not walked out of the Obama-era JCPOA, Iran would have had nuclear weapons. Donald Trump claimed Iran would have developed nuclear weapons without his actions, saying “there would be no Israel right now".

US President Donald Trump once again said on Wednesday that there will be no “Israel” without him. Speaking with the conservative radio commentator Glenn Beck, he said that if he had not walked out of the Obama-era JCPOA, Iran would have had nuclear weapons. He claimed that it was "one of the most dangerous deals ever," describing it as a "path to a nuclear weapon." "Israel would have been totally knocked out," he added. "If Donald Trump wasn't president, there would be no Israel right now … and that's a guarantee," said Trump, reiterating the comments he made at the G7 summit. CIA Director John Ratcliffe was in Moscow on Tuesday (Aug 25) for an unannounced visit, according to US media reports, in what would be the highest-level trip by a Trump administration official to Russia since January.CBS News first reported Ratcliffe's presence in the Russian capital, citing people familiar with the matter. Axios separately confirmed the visit, quoting a US official.Neither Washington nor Moscow has publicly explained why Ratcliffe travelled to Russia or who he was expected to meet.
US military aircraft flew from Riga to Moscow
The reported visit was accompanied by the unusual movement of a US government aircraft. Flight-tracking data showed a US military C-17 flying from Joint Base Andrews to Latvia before continuing to Moscow. The aircraft left Riga at around 05:50 GMT and arrived in Moscow at about 07:04 GMT. The same aircraft later departed Moscow after spending roughly 8.5 hours on the ground.
Kremlin says no US talks planned
This comes as the Kremlin said that there were contacts involving security services. Asked about the reported visit, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said it involved "contacts between security services", according to The Washington Post.At the same time, Peskov said Moscow had no plans to meet US administration representatives this week. "No, there are no such plans," he told reporters at a press briefing on Tuesday when asked about possible talks with US envoys.Peskov also said he had no information about the US military aircraft that landed at Moscow's Vnukovo airport.
Ratcliffe visit comes as Ukraine diplomacy stalls
The trip comes at a difficult moment in US-Russia relations, with American efforts to broker an end to Russia's war in Ukraine showing little visible progress. Russia and Ukraine have stepped up long-range strikes against each other, while concerns have also grown in Washington and Europe over the possibility of Moscow testing NATO's resolve elsewhere.Axios reported that Washington had informed Kyiv that a senior US delegation was travelling to Moscow and had asked Ukraine to pause strikes for the duration of the visit.
Rare Moscow trip by a CIA chief
Ratcliffe's reported visit is particularly notable because trips by sitting CIA directors to Moscow are rare. The last known visit came in November 2021, when then-CIA director William Burns travelled to the Russian capital and warned President Vladimir Putin and senior officials against invading Ukraine. Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine just weeks later.

US President Donald Trump has called joint military exercises with South Korea "inappropriate" and ordered a significant reduction in the drills. The move has sparked concerns about regional security and Washington's commitment to its allies.

Trump calls military exercise with South Korea ‘inappropriate’

Donald Trump has long projected himself as a master negotiator, but two of his biggest challenges are testing that reputation. In Iran, months of military pressure, sanctions and diplomacy have yet to produce a lasting settlement. On the trade front, hopes of breakthrough agreements have instead given way to fresh tariff battles and renewed uncertainty. As Washington escalates pressure on multiple fronts, the key question remains: can Trump's strategy deliver the deals he seeks, or is the world moving toward deeper economic and geopolitical confrontation?

Can Trump still close the deal?

The US Supreme Court on Monday (Aug 24)gave President Donald Trump a temporary victory in his effort to restrict mail-in voting ahead of the November midterm elections, allowing key parts of his executive order to move forward while the broader legal battle continues. The court's 6-3 decision lifted a lower court's injunction that had blocked parts of Trump's March 31 executive order, which seeks to impose new federal requirements on mail-in ballots. But Tehran has asserted that this tactic will fail and threatened to shut down all oil exports from West Asia.Without detailing specific measures, Bessent has signalled that the US would also target nations that practise appeasement by engaging with Iran’s economy and financial system.China, though, drew the red line. Opposing the imposition of fresh sanctions against Iran, Beijing argued that they would escalate tensions and called upon all parties to exercise restraint and return to talks. Now, why is China’s stance so crucial?According to reports, Beijing helped push Tehran to the negotiating table for a ceasefire in April. Being Iran’s largest trading partner, which purchases roughly 90 per cent of its crude oil, China has high stakes in reopening the Strait of Hormuz.Another key question arises: Can Trump bypass China’s opposition and go ahead with the economic sanctions? Since his visit to Beijing in May, the US President has been keen on China buying American soybeans, oil as well as Boeing jets. For America, China’s supply of critical minerals is also vital, as they are essential components in the production of weapons, which have been depleted by the war.Going against Beijing at this juncture might put all this at risk. It is also worth noting that Xi is set to meet Trump at the White House in September.Ahead of America’s announcement, mediation efforts continue.Pakistan Army Chief Asim Munir arrived in Tehran, where he met Iranian Interior Minister Eskandar Momeni. According to Reuters, Trump spoke to Munir last week, with the US seeking Pakistan’s influence to bring Iran back to talks.Tensions persisted in West Asia, though. For instance, Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthis claimed responsibility for firing a ballistic missile at a Saudi Arabia-flagged tanker in the Red Sea. This led to a fire breaking out on the vessel. The Houthis declared a maritime blockade of Saudi Arabia last month. On its part, Iran blacklisted 45 tankers for breaking its rules while crossing the Strait of Hormuz and warned other vessels not to transit this strategic waterway without its permission. It stressed that these vessels could be fined and have their cargo confiscated as well. Additionally, Iran threatened other countries against joining new US efforts to squeeze Tehran’s economy.Meanwhile, Iran clarified that it was yet to receive a formal invitation to join the Makkah Defence Pact signed by Pakistan, Türkiye and Saudi Arabia. However, Tehran did not rule out negotiations with these countries for the overall security of the region.America’s fresh threat of economic sanctions also comes at a time when the Iranian rial has fallen to a historic low, crossing two million rials against the US dollar. This has raised fresh concerns about inflation, purchasing power and the Iranian government’s ability to stabilise the economy.Food has become very expensive, with the price of rice up by 60 per cent since the war began. Now, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian also acknowledged the issues arising from the current impasse. He linked the MOU with the US to Iran’s economic prospects, saying that his country was not able to attract investment at present.People on the streets of Iran also expressed their anguish over the current state of affairs. With both the US and Iran unwilling to budge from their positions, West Asia continues to remain on edge.
