Japan's Seiji Ozawa, one of the best-known orchestra conductors of his generation, died on Tuesday of heart failure at the age of 88, public broadcaster NHK announced on Friday.

Ozawa, who was born in China, spent decades in the rarefied atmosphere of top orchestras around the world but wore baseball-themed ties to interviews and preferred to be called by his first name, not "maestro".

His bushy hair and smile charmed audiences, especially in the United States, where his tenure as music director of the Boston Symphony Orchestra spanned nearly three decades.

In 2020, Boston proclaimed his birthday, Sept. 1, "Seiji Ozawa Day", prompting a pleased Ozawa to remark that Boston was his second home.

"That was a really important time in my life," he was quoted as saying. "No matter where I go, Boston is a part of my heart."

Years later, back in Tokyo, the unpretentious Ozawa was sometimes spotted on subway platforms dressed in a jacket and cap of his beloved Boston Red Sox baseball team and would stop to chat to admirers.

"I'm the complete opposite of a genius, I have always had to make an effort," he told a 2014 news conference.

"I don't really like studying, but I had to do it if I wanted to make music. Anybody with genius can easily do better than me."

A stint with the Vienna State Opera was overshadowed by ill health, including a diagnosis of oesophageal cancer in 2010, the year he left.

He later had surgery for a back injury and suffered bouts of pneumonia, which often kept him sidelined but failed to dent his enthusiasm.

"I will continue doing everything I have always done, teaching and conducting orchestra, until I die," Ozawa told Reuters in a December 2013 interview, at which he wore a Boston Red Sox baseball tie and black jacket.

LOOKING AHEAD

The down time had advantages by freeing him to study music, talk with friends, such as best-selling Japanese author Haruki Murakami, and to think, Ozawa said.

"I had always been looking ahead, since if you don't forget the piece you conducted at one day's concert you can't prepare for the next," he wrote in a 2014 essay for the Nikkei newspaper.

"I had never reflected on the past. There had simply never been enough time."

The third in a family of four boys, Ozawa was born in Shenyang, China, in 1935 where his father, a dentist, had settled. They later moved to Beijing.

His mother, a Christian, took him to church to sing hymns, and the family sang at home, sometimes accompanied by one of his brothers on an accordion.

"That was how I met music," he wrote later.

The family returned to Japan in 1941, taking only some clothes, an album of pictures and the accordion, and Ozawa began learning piano. When he sprained his finger playing rugby and could not continue, he switched to conducting.

In 1959, Ozawa set out for Europe on a cargo ship, taking two months to reach France, where he was determined to test his skills at a young conductors' competition in Besancon.

He won, opening doors around the world and allowing him to work with greats such as Herbert von Karajan and Leonard Bernstein.

Stints in Toronto, San Francisco and Singapore followed. In 1973 he became director of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, starting a 29-year relationship.

A rabid sports fan, Ozawa's heart was in Boston with the Red Sox, the New England Patriots football team and basketball's Celtics.

Though Ozawa devoted time to teaching - in Boston, he held weekly classes for children, who all called him "Seiji" - his passion was for nurturing classical music in Japan, where he set up a summer music festival in the city of Matsumoto named for Hideo Saito, his first mentor.

The festival became such a success that music fans flocked to the city in the mountains and even taxi drivers became well-versed in classical music.

Ozawa has two grown children. His daughter, Seira, is an author and his son, Yukiyoshi, an actor.

Fresh allegations of abuse have surfaced against actor Jonathan Majors, known for his roles in Marvel productions, following his recent legal troubles. The accusations come in the wake of Majors' conviction in December on charges of misdemeanour assault and harassment stemming from a domestic violence incident with former girlfriend Grace Jabbari in New York City in March 2023.

In a new report by The New York Times published on Thursday, detailed accounts from two women who claimed to have dated Majors shed light on further instances of alleged abuse. Emma Duncan accused Majors of both physical and emotional abuse, while Maura Hooper alleged emotional mistreatment during their respective relationships with the actor.

In response to the allegations, Priya Chaudhry, Majors' legal representative, characterised the relationships with both women as "toxic" and admitted that Majors "did say hurtful things." However, Chaudhry vehemently denied many of the claims of physical abuse in responses obtained by PEOPLE.

Describing the dynamics of the relationships, Chaudhry stated, "These relationships were between young drama students and all began with mutual intensity." Hooper and Majors dated from 2013 to 2015, while his relationship with Duncan lasted from 2015 to 2019.

The war of words between veteran lyricist Javed Akhtar and filmmaker Sandeep Reddy Vanga continues to make headlines, with Vanga firing back at Akhtar's recent criticism of his film Animal.

In an interview with Siddharth Kannan, Vanga responded to Akhtar's labelling of films like Animal as "dangerous" due to their portrayal of misogyny and violence. Vanga suggested that Akhtar should scrutinise his son Farhan Akhtar's production, Mirzapur, known for its explicit language and content, before casting stones at others' projects.

Expressing his frustration, Vanga pointed out that Akhtar's critique seemed uninformed, as it appeared he had not watched Animal in entirety. He questioned the validity of criticism from individuals who haven't thoroughly engaged with the art they're condemning, urging them to examine their own surroundings before passing judgment.

Sandeep said, "It is very clear that he did not watch the film. It’s very clear in that comment that he did not see the entire film. Now if someone is talking without watching the film, what can I say about them? Obviously, you feel bad because it is very clear that he has not seen the film and not only about him; anybody who is throwing stones on an art piece, why don’t they check their surroundings first?"

He added, "Why didn’t he tell the same thing to Farhan Akhtar when he was producing Mirzapur. Duniya bhar ke gaali Mirzapur ke ek show mein hain (the series is full of abuses) and I haven’t watched the whole show. When the show was translated to Telugu, if you watch that, then you will feel like puking. Why is he not checking his son’s work?"

Vanga's comments come amidst ongoing debates surrounding Animal, starring Ranbir Kapoor, Rashmika Mandanna, Bobby Deol, Anil Kapoor, and Triptii Dimri. Despite mixed reviews, the movie emerged as one of the highest-grossing films of 2023, raking in over Rs 9 billion worldwide.

Javed Akhtar's remarks were made during the Ajanta Ellora International Film Festival in Aurangabad, where he criticised certain scenes in films that depict men demeaning women and glorifying violence. Akhtar's comments were specifically directed at a scene in Animal where Ranbir Kapoor's character demands Triptii Dimri's character to lick his shoe as a test of love, as well as a reference to Vanga's previous film Kabir Singh, known for its controversial portrayal of relationships.

New details have surfaced surrounding an alleged altercation involving Hollywood actor Jacob Elordi, best known for his role in the hit HBO series Euphoria. The incident reportedly occurred in southeast Sydney, where Australian authorities are said to be investigating claims of physical assault against a radio producer.

According to reports, Joshua Fox, a staffer at KIIS FM, a local radio station, tracked the Saltburn star to a bar in Sydney when he heard the actor was in the city.
A convicted drug dealer reluctantly testified Monday that Jam Master Jay — known for his anti-drug advocacy as part of the groundbreaking rap group Run-DMC — got involved in cocaine trafficking to pay his bills.

Ralph Mullgrav gave the first public testimony about the alleged drug dealing that prosecutors claim was the reason why the DJ was shot dead in his studio in October 2002.

Mullgrav said Jam Master Jay, born Jason Mizell, approached him periodically to sell cocaine that the rap star had acquired — “maybe 1 or 2 kilos, here or there.”

“Jason wasn’t a drug dealer. He just used it to make ends meet,” Mullgrav said.

Two people close to the rap star, godson Karl Jordan Jr. and childhood friend Ronald Washington, are on trial in a case that has offered answers to the long-unsolved loss of a hip-hop legend while raising new questions about his life. Washington, 59, and Jordan, 40, have pleaded not guilty to murder.

Prosecutors have said the two men were going to be cut out of a lucrative transaction, which Mizell was arranging, to distribute 10 kilograms (22 pounds) of cocaine because a dealer — now identified as Mullgrav — wouldn’t work with Washington.

Mullgrav told jurors that Mizell approached him in August 2002 to say he had a line on 10 or so kilograms of cocaine from the Midwest and “was asking me to move it for him” in Baltimore. Mullgrav lived there at the time.

Mizell wanted to put Washington, who’s known as “Tinard,” on the ground in Baltimore, said Mullgrav, who grew up with both men.

“He wanted me to work with Tinard. I told him no,” Mullgrav said, because Washington “was a problem.” Mullgrav said he disliked Washington enough to want to shoot him when he appeared in Baltimore around that time.

Mullgrav spent 12 years in prison on a federal drug conviction before his 2013 release, and he acknowledged in court that he sold cocaine, with 25 or so people working for him.

A convicted drug dealer reluctantly testified Monday that Jam Master Jay — known for his anti-drug advocacy as part of the groundbreaking rap group Run-DMC — got involved in cocaine trafficking to pay his bills.

Mullgrav said Jam Master Jay, born Jason Mizell, approached him periodically to sell cocaine that the rap star had acquired — “maybe 1 or 2 kilos, here or there.” “Jason wasn’t a drug dealer. He testified only after being arrested on a material witness warrant — a procedure that can be used to compel uncooperative witnesses to come to court — and spending seven days behind bars, said Gary Farrell, an attorney who was appointed to represent him. Mullgrav had been brought to the stand Friday but balked at giving evidence. He was laconic in court Monday and wore a large medical-style face mask. Baby John teaser out! Atlee presents Varun Dhawan in a deadly avatar

Indian director Sriram Raghavan's recent film, Merry Christmas was one of the early releases of 2024. The movie features some of the top stars of the Indian film industry, including Katrina Kaif, Vijay Sethupathi and Sanjay Kapoor. The thriller marks Raghavan's first attempt at a Hindi-Tamil bilingual that was shot with different extended cast.

In this exclusive conversation with WION, Raghavan talked about his love for Alfred Hitchcock films, which are popularly called Hitchcockian dramas.

You have a fondness for Hitchock-styled drama. Can you talk about your favourite movies by Alfred Hitchcock?

My love for Hitchcockian drama started when I was a child. I used to go to the libraries and read the stories which Hitchcock used to present on screen. I was 10 when I watched North By Northwest and I completely loved it. These movies used to come on re-runs. When I joined a film institute I watched so many of his movies for the first time like Psycho. Today, of course, all of them are available. But you are right, among all the filmmakers who have influenced me, Hitchcock probably holds a special place in my heart.

Talking about my favourite, well it is difficult to pick one. But if I had to pick three, they would be; Notorious, that black and white thriller does not have a drop of blood in it. Psycho, I mean is the mother of all slasher movies. Then there is Vertigo, when this movie was released, it was not that big a hit at the theatres. But now it is one of the best work of the director.

What did the Fish, Teddy, and the chirping of the bird signify in Merry Christmas?

See the bird in the cage represented many things. You can imagine the symbol associated with it. If I talk about it I will sound pedantic. The bird has many reasons to be there. For alert audiences, the bird is a big clue, a catalyst and many things.

Then the teddy initially started as just a toy in a child's hand. Then it started symbolising something in the movie. I don't know if anyone noticed but the teddy bear started growing bigger with lies, just like Pinocchio's nose. If you are alert you can watch it. You have to read into or you can see it as a nice inclusion. Then the teddy also represents Maria's troubles and woes.

What was the significance of shooting in Bombay and not Mumbai?

I wanted to establish the city of Bombay when there weren't so many cars on the street. I grew up in Bombay, and I wanted to capture those times. I wanted to avoid realism and wanted to give it a fairytale feel.

What were the minor clues you left in the film, which we will recognise once we revisit?

There are quite a few. You can notice the teddy. You can interpret the bird in many ways. Even the lift in the building represents the bird in the cage.

Also read: Nicki Minaj, Katy Perry, Snoop Dogg: Artists who’ve surprisingly never won a Grammy

Mainstream stars such as Katrina Kaif, Vijay Sethupathi are experimenting with films. Do you think the Hindi cinema industry is now beginning to experiment?

Of course, we are opening up to experiments. A lot of films will be made as long as there is an actor, producer, or director willing to join the fun. I never thought that was the problem. Katrina Kaif specifically met me and told me she wants to do something that's more in my zone.

Coming to Vijay Sethupathi, he is such a big star and has worked in so many range of films. Actors will always be willing to do a variety of roles but a star will always have calculations.

At the Grammy Awards on Sunday, hip-hop legend Jay-Z was bestowed with the prestigious Dr. Dre Global Impact Award, marking a significant moment in his illustrious career. We want you to get it right — or at least get it close to right. And obviously, it’s subjective, because it’s music and it's opinion-based, but some things…”

The longstanding rift between royal siblings Prince William and Prince Harry, often attributed to the arrival of Meghan Markle in Harry's life, is now revealed to have deeper roots. According to insights from palace insiders, the initial discord between the brothers originated from their differing perspectives on wildlife conservation in Africa, reported The Times of London.

The insider shared, "They are both very passionate about saving protected species but didn’t always share the same view about how to run projects in Africa." The source elaborated that Prince William advocated for community-led schemes, empowering local communities over time to protect the land. On the other hand, Prince Harry leaned towards a more interventionist approach, emphasising the need for hands-on measures to swiftly secure and protect wildlife habitats.

This revelation counters the common assumption that the rift emerged primarily due to Prince Harry's relationship with Meghan Markle. In his autobiography titled Spare, published last year, Prince Harry highlighted their conservation differences, recounting a moment when their conflicting views almost led to a physical altercation in front of childhood friends.

"One day, we almost came to blows in front of our childhood mates," Harry wrote, recalling the incident. When friends questioned why both princes were involved in African conservation efforts, Prince William reportedly replied, "Because rhinos, elephants, that’s mine!"

Comedian Shane Gillis, who was previously dismissed from SNL for using a racial slur in a 2018 YouTube video, is making a comeback to the live comedy sketch show as a host. The announcement was made during a recent episode, hosted by The Bear's Ayo Edebiri. He will be joined by 21 Savage as musical guest on February 24.

The comedian was fired from SNL in 2019 over offensive language in a resurfaced video. Initially set to join SNL as a featured player, Gillis faced a public outcry due to the controversial video, which resulted in the SNL makers sacking the comedian. At the time, SNL spokespersons expressed regret over not discovering the remarks earlier, deeming them offensive and unacceptable.

“We want SNL to have a variety of voices and points of view within the show, and we hired Shane on the strength of his talent as a comedian and his impressive audition for SNL,” they said at the time. “We were not aware of his prior remarks that have surfaced over the past few days. The language he used is offensive, hurtful and unacceptable. We are sorry that we did not see these clips earlier, and that our vetting process was not up to our standard.”

As Bollywood star Bhumi Pednekar gears up for the premiere of her upcoming crime thriller, Bhakshak, slated for release on Netflix on February 9, the actress shared a deeply personal account in an interview with Hauterrfly. Pednekar's candid revelation shed light on traumatic incidents from her teenage years.

During the interview, Bhumi recounted an unsettling experience that happened when she was just 14 years old. While attending a fair in Bandra with her family, she became a victim of inappropriate touching by a stranger amidst the crowded event. The actress revealed the horrific impact of the incident on her over the years.

Pednekar said, "I remember this very very clearly. In Bandra, fairs used to happen back then. I was a teenager, probably 14, and was with my family. I knew what was happening… it’s not like I was unaware. I was walking and somebody kept pinching my a*s. Though I looked back, I couldn’t understand who did it because it was very crowded. Somebody tried touching me inappropriately again and again and I was getting paranoid. Though I was with my family, there also was a whole bunch of kids from my building as well. But I didn’t say anything at that time because I was thrown off by what had happened.”

"I still remember how that felt. I remember the poking and the pinching. It’s like your body remembers… these are traumas that you can’t get over," she recalled.

He would ‘do his business’ (in front of us). This is a sickness. How do you reach that stage of such heightened emotion that you think this is normal? A lot of it comes from education," she mentioned.

Discussing the paralysing effect of such incidents, Bhumi said, "At that moment, you are so paralysed and traumatised, you just don’t know what to do… You feel so violated."

Renowned Bollywood filmmaker Rakesh Roshan recently secured a legal victory as the Bombay High Court directed the return of Rs 2 million that was swindled from him in a scam dating back to 2011.

According to a India Today report, Roshan fell victim to a fraudulent scheme orchestrated by two individuals posing as CBI (Central Bureau of Investigation) officers. The perpetrators duped the filmmaker of Rs 5 million in 2011, prompting him to file a complaint with the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) in Mumbai after receiving no further communication.

The ACB subsequently apprehended the culprits, identified as Ashwini Sharma from Haryana and Rajesh Ranjan from Mumbai, who confessed to duping other film stars as well. The authorities seized their properties in Navi Mumbai, Haryana, and Dalhousie, totalling around Rs 29.4 million, along with some gold.

Roshan filed an application in 2012 to reclaim his money, and in 2014, the trial court granted him the retrieval of Rs 3 million withholding the remaining Rs 2 million. Dissatisfied with this decision, Roshan took the matter to the Bombay High Court through his lawyer Prasanna Bhangale.

Bhangale argued that, according to CBI findings, one accused took Rs 2 million, and the other took Rs 3 million out of the total Rs 5 million. Despite the former giving a no-objection in the trial court for Roshan to receive the money, only Rs 3 million was awarded to the filmmaker. The lawyer emphasised that there was no justification for withholding the remaining amount.

The Bombay High Court, in its recent order, sided with Roshan, directing the return of the entire sum to the filmmaker. The court found no reason to withhold the additional Rs 2 million, bringing closure to this decade-old legal battle for the successful Bollywood director.

A lawyer for Prince Harry asked a judge Monday to order the publisher of the Daily Mirror tabloid to pay nearly 2 million pounds ($2.5 million) for a portion of the legal fees spent to prove that Mirror Group Newspapers invaded his privacy by hacking his phone and using unlawful means to dig up scoops on him.

The Duke of Sussex was awarded 140,000 pounds ($178,000) in damages last month after the judge found that phone hacking was “widespread and habitual” at Mirror newspapers and executives at the papers covered it up.

The award was only a fraction of the sum he sought but represented a major victory in his legal crusade against the British media. It is only one of several cases he has pending against tabloid publishers as he bucked his family’s longstanding aversion to litigation and in June became the first senior member of the royal family to testify in court in over a century.

Harry, 39, the alienated younger son of King Charles III, is likely to return to court in the coming year in similar trials against the publishers of The Sun and Daily Mail over allegations of unlawful snooping. He recently dropped a libel case against the Mail publisher after an unfavourable pretrial ruling.

The hearing Monday was over legal fees for a trial that involved Harry as one of four claimants, including two members of Britain’s longest-running TV soap opera, “Coronation Street,” who accused Mirror of hacking their phones and hiring private investigators to unlawfully gather information about their lives.

The judge found the privacy of all four claimants had been violated but he tossed out cases brought by actor Nikki Sanderson and Fiona Wightman, the former wife of comedian Paul Whitehouse, because they were filed too late. He awarded actor Michael Turner 31,000 pounds ($39,000).

Attorney David Sherborne argued that his case was “overwhelmingly successful” and his clients should be reimbursed legal fees because Mirror “advanced a fundamentally dishonest case.”

Attorney Roger Mallalieu for Mirror Group argued that it should only have to pay legal fees for the portions of the claims it lost. It said Sanderson and Wightman should pay MGN’s costs for losing their cases. He argued that Turner should only receive costs up to the point that Mirror offered a settlement that would have exceeded what he was awarded at trial and he should pay their costs after that point.

Justice Timothy Fancourt indicated he would rule at a later date.

The fees being sought were mainly for the broader claim brought against Mirror by all the claimants and not for the legal costs of preparing for and presenting Harry’s specific cases because his claims have not been fully resolved.

Fancourt found that Mirror used unlawful information gathering in 15 of the 33 newspaper articles about Harry that were examined at trial. Those articles were selected as a representative sample from among nearly 150 articles that he said invaded his privacy.

Sherborne asked that a trial be scheduled to take up the remaining 115 articles. Mirror indicated in court papers that it has made a settlement offer to Harry that could not be disclosed.

Once those claims are resolved, Harry will be able to seek additional lawyers’ fees.

Phone hacking by British newspapers dates back more than two decades to a time when unethical journalists used an unsophisticated method of phoning the numbers of royals, celebrities, politicians and sports stars and, when prompted to leave a message, punched in default passcodes to eavesdrop on voicemails.

The practice erupted into a full-blown scandal in 2011 when Rupert Murdoch’s News of the World was revealed to have intercepted messages of a murdered girl, relatives of deceased British soldiers and victims of a bombing. Murdoch closed the paper.

Newspapers were later found to have used more intrusive means such as phone tapping, home bugging and obtaining flight information and medical records.

Mirror Group Newspapers said it has paid more than 100 million pounds ($128 million) in other phone hacking lawsuits over the years, but denied wrongdoing in Harry’s case. It said it used legitimate reporting methods to get information on the prince.

Megan Thee Stallion's latest track, "HISS," has ignited a storm of controversy due to its explicit reference to "Megan's Law," drawing sharp criticism from the family of Megan Kanka, the young girl whose tragic abduction and murder inspired the legislation.

Crafted with more than 4 carats of diamonds, this custom piece is part of Wove's collaboration with professional golfer Michelle Wie West. A similar version of the bracelet with three letters, identical to Swift's, is available for $5,680.
