Brad Pitt ventures into the unforgiving Alaskan wilderness with an unlikely but unforgettable companion in Heart of the Beast. Directed by David Ayer, the survival thriller combines harsh landscapes, physical danger and emotional vulnerability to tell a story that ultimately goes beyond simply making it out alive. At its centre is the relationship between former Special Forces soldier James Belmont and his retired combat dog, Odin.
Plot of Heart of the Beast
Brad Pitt plays the role of retired Special Forces veteran James Belmont and his four-legged companion, combat veteran German Shepherd Odin, who share a quiet, solitary life, following the decades of military service in Iraq and Afghanistan. Facing several battles together, the duo carry physical and emotional scars, including PTSD nightmares, with Odin walking with the help of a prosthetic leg and titanium teeth. Also Read: Cindy Crawford’s son Presley Gerber cremated as death probe continues However, for a simple break, the duo fly a small plane into the remote Alaskan wilderness for a peaceful camping and fly-fishing trip. Nearly a decade after their high-profile split, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie remain locked in a gruelling, multi-front legal battle over Château Miraval—the stunning French estate and winery they once shared as a family. Weeks after Jolie celebrated a major victory involving private communications, Pitt secured a significant courtroom win of his own. While the former Hollywood power couple officially finalised their divorce in late 2024, the courtroom drama surrounding the estate continues to rage on, with both sides trading blows across multiple states.
A breakthrough for Brad Pitt in Michigan
In the latest chapter of the dispute, a Michigan judge ruled in Pitt’s favour regarding a crucial deposition. The issue centres around Todd Culyba, the former General Counsel for the Stoli Group. During a deposition, Culyba was instructed by lawyers not to answer 33 specific questions regarding Jolie’s 2021 sale of her winery stake to Tenute del Mondo (a subsidiary of the Stoli Group). Pitt’s legal team has been aggressively trying to pull back the curtain on how that sale was orchestrated, specifically looking into the involvement of Yuri Shefler, the billionaire owner behind the Stoli Group. Pitt initially sued Jolie in 2022, claiming she violated a mutual agreement by selling her share without his consent—an agreement Jolie maintains never existed. The Michigan judge ruled that the attorney-client privilege cannot be used as a shield to avoid answering questions about the purely business aspects of the deal. As a result, Culyba is now headed back to the hot seat for a second deposition to answer those 33 questions, along with any necessary follow-ups.
Angelina Jolie’s California Victory
While Pitt celebrates his win in the Midwest, Jolie recently scored a major defensive victory closer to home. Earlier this month, a Los Angeles Superior Court judge shut down Pitt’s request to access a trove of Jolie's private emails regarding the winery sale, ruling that Pitt’s team failed to provide enough legal justification to pierce the attorney-client privilege. Jolie’s attorney, Paul Murphy, didn't hold back in his assessment of the ruling, calling it a major win against what he characterised as a pattern of behaviour from Pitt. "This ruling demonstrates Brad Pitt was completely out of bounds in his efforts to access clearly privileged documents," Murphy stated, noting that Pitt's team initially demanded 126 documents before narrowing it down to 22, and ultimately walking away with none. According to Murphy, the move reflects a consistent pattern of Pitt attempting to exert control over Jolie, even extending to her private communications with her legal counsel. However, the California judge issued the ruling "without prejudice," meaning the door isn't entirely shut. If Pitt’s team can come up with a different, stronger legal argument, they could try to ask for the emails again.
Pitt’s Growing Divide with the Children
As the legal warfare drags on, the public spotlight has increasingly shifted to the couple’s six children, who appear to be making definitive choices about where they stand. In the most recent development, the couple's eldest son, Maddox Chivan Jolie-Pitt, has formally filed legal paperwork to drop "Pitt" from his hyphenated surname, requesting to legally become Maddox Chivan Jolie. Court filings cite personal reasons for the change. Maddox’s other siblings, too, have distanced themselves from their father's name. Shiloh legally dropped "Pitt" from her last name immediately after turning 18. Zahara publicly introduced herself as "Zahara Marley Jolie" during a university sorority ceremony. Vivienne was credited simply as "Vivienne Jolie" for her work on the Broadway musical The Outsiders. Nearly a decade after splitting, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie are still locked in a global legal war over their French winery, Château Miraval. Though their divorce was finalized in late 2024, the battle over the estate continues across multiple state courts.

Maddox, the eldest son of Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt, wants to remove Pitt from his name. The 24-year-old has taken a legal step to remove his father's surname after years of feud with his father, according to TMZ.

As per the reports, he has submitted court documents on Thursday, May 28, requesting to change his legal name and add his mother's name, Maddox Chivan Jolie. The filing is still pending as the request is yet to be granted, the outlet reported. No comment has been made by Pitt and Jolie’s rep as of now. Maddox is the eldest of Jolie and Pitt’s six children. Jolie adopted Maddox in 2002 as a single mom. However, Pitt later became his adoptive father after he and Jolie began dating and were serious about each other. However, the world is well-versed in the personal differences the Pitt has with his children after his separation from them. Jolie and Pitt, who split in 2016, also share Pax, 22, Zahara, 21, Shiloh, 20, and 17-year-old twins Knox and Vivienne. Maddox has taken legal steps months after he dropped Pitt from his name in the credits for his mother's film Couture. The 24-year-old has worked as the assistant director. His name is mentioned simply as Maddox Jolie. Earlier, when he worked as a production assistant on Netflix’s Maria Callas biopic Maria, he was credited as Maddox Jolie-Pitt. However, he's not the first sibling to have done this. In 2024, Vivienne dropped dad Pitt's last name and chose only to be mentioned with Jolie's surname in the playbill for The Outsiders, a Broadway show, in which she has worked with her mother. Even Angelina's older daughter, Zahara, opted for her mother's maiden name as she also chose to drop Pitt. As of now, only Shiloh is the one who has dropped his father's name legally. Earlier, Pax made his differences with father official when he penned a shocking Father's Day note, in which he called the Oscar-winning star, ''world-class a***hole!'' Brad and Angelina, once Hollywood’s most beloved couple, have since become one of the industry’s most talked-about examples of a fractured relationship. Since their divorce in 2016, they have grown apart and become embroiled in a contentious child custody battle.

One after another, each of Angelina Jolie's kids is picking a side, and it's not their father Brad Pitt's side. It has been reportedly learnt that Maddox is the new sibling, who has taken a legal route to drop his father's surname.

At one point, while contemplating about getting back on the circuit he reasons to a friendly waitress that is not about the money. “Then what is it about?” she questions -which forms the crux of the film.
