Veteran Indian batter and former Indian captain Ajinkya Rahane has stepped down as the captain of the Mumbai Ranji team, just ahead of the 2025–26 domestic season. Rahane, who last played an ODI for India in 2018 and a T20I in 2016, has not been part of India’s white-ball setup for years. However, he remained a consistent and reliable performer in red-ball cricket. He played his last Test match against the West Indies at Port of Spain, where he managed to score just eight runs. Since then, he hasn’t been picked for the national team but continued to play domestic cricket for Mumbai. In the 2025 IPL season, Rahane also led the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and scored 390 runs from 13 matches, proving that he still has plenty to offer. Despite his experience and leadership, Rahane has now made a bold decision to step away from the captaincy role. On Thursday (Aug 21), Rahane posted on X (formerly Twitter), “Captaining and winning championships with the Mumbai team has been an absolute honour. With a new domestic season ahead, I believe it's the right time to groom a new leader, and hence I've decided not to continue in the captaincy role. I remain fully committed to giving my best as a player and will continue my journey with the Mumbai Cricket Association to help us win more trophies. Looking forward to the season.”

The Indian cricket team has been cleared to play in the upcoming Asia Cup 2025, scheduled to start from September 9, despite the fact that the country's policy bars bilateral sporting interactions with Pakistan. As per a statement issued by the Indian sports ministry on Thursday (August 21), bilateral competitions between the two countries are still suspended, which means Indian teams will not go to Pakistan for competitions, nor Pakistani teams will be allowed to compete in India on a bilateral level. But when it comes to multilateral competition like the Asia Cup, World Cups, or Olympic qualifiers, then there's an exception to that rule.

The government policy further observes that India shall participate in international and multilateral competitions that include Pakistan as one of the participating nations, provided that the tournaments are organised under international sporting commissions. Numbers don't lie This distinction is the reason why India's cricket team will be permitted to play in the Asia Cup, a continental tournament run by the Asian Cricket Council. Though there is no room for a bilateral series between India and Pakistan under the existing policy, both countries are free to play on neutral grounds or in a recognised multilateral competition. The policy document also emphasises India's endeavours to become a global sporting event choice host. It commits to streamlined visa procedures for foreign sportsmen, officials, and representatives of governing bodies, affirming India's credibility as a host for mega-level tournaments. For Indian cricket supporters, the clearance ensures another instalment of the historic India–Pakistan rivalry will unfold in the 2025 Asia Cup. Although the two countries will never face one another in a bilateral series anytime soon, multilateral competitions will continue to offer the platform for cricket's most-watched contest.

Will India pull out of Asia Cup match against Pakistan? Indian sports ministry says...

India and Pakistan are scheduled to play in next month's Asia Cup 2025 on September 14. The two arch-rivals are placed in the same group

When India announced its 15-man squad for the Asia Cup in September 2025, one name was conspicuously missing: Shreyas Iyer. The Punjab Kings captain – fresh off a stellar Indian Premier League (IPL) campaign – did not even find a place among the reserves. His omission has left fans and experts baffled, considering the weight of his performances in the past year. In IPL 2025, Iyer was at his prime best. He amassed 604 runs in 17 innings at an average of 50.33 and a sensational strike-rate of 175, guiding Punjab Kings to their first final since 2014. Just a few months before that, he had been India’s standout performer in the ICC Champions Trophy, where he topped the batting charts for India with 243 runs at an average of 48.60. For his consistent form, he was even named ICC’s Player of the Month in March 2025.
The Statistical Case
Numbers alone should have guaranteed Iyer a spot. In the 2025 Champions Trophy, he scored two important half-centuries and played a crucial role in India lifting the trophy after a 12-year wait. In T20Is since the 2024 World Cup, he has piled up nearly 950 runs in 25 innings at an average of 49.94 and a strike-rate approaching 180, including a career-best unbeaten 130. His overall ODI record stands at more than 2,400 runs with five centuries and 18 half-centuries. In the IPL, he has crossed the 3,000-run mark with 21 half-centuries to his name. The numbers don’t lie. They suggest a batsman in peak form and a natural choice for a middle-order slot.
The Leader India Doesn’t Pick
But Iyer’s case is about more than just runs. He has developed into one of the finest leaders in Indian cricket. Remarkably, he has taken three different IPL franchises – Delhi, Kolkata, and Punjab – into finals. In 2024, he lifted the trophy with Kolkata Knight Riders; in 2025, he guided Punjab Kings to their first final in over a decade. He has also led Mumbai to a Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy win, underscoring his ability to inspire teams across formats and competitions. Iyer was also a central figure in India’s Champions Trophy win earlier this year, not just as a batsman but as a calm, tactical presence in pressure situations. Former selectors have often lauded his cricketing brain and fielding ability, qualities that add further value to his resume.
The Selectors’ Stand
Chief selector Ajit Agarkar defended the decision, saying Iyer had done ‘nothing wrong’ but ‘needs to wait for his chance’. His argument was simple: the squad balance left little room to accommodate him. But critics were unconvinced. Former coach Abhishek Nayar said he “can’t fathom” leaving Iyer out even of the larger pool, calling it a message that the Mumbai batsman was not in the selectors’ long-term plans. Other voices, from ex-players like Surinder Khanna to senior players such as Ravichandran Ashwin, have described the move as unfair. To many, the choice to overlook a player in such rich form – especially in favour of less experienced names – reeks of muddled priorities.
A Pattern of Neglect
For Iyer, heartbreak at the selection table is nothing new. He was overlooked for the 2021, 2022, and 2024 T20 World Cups, despite being among the runs each time. Now, the Asia Cup exclusion has reopened the same debate: what more must he do? At 30, he is at the peak of his career, scoring runs across formats, leading teams to finals, and yet finding himself outside India’s plans for major tournaments. The official explanation leans on continuity and combination, with whispers that management prefers left-handed power-hitters in the middle order. But until such reasoning is stated plainly, the narrative remains one of preference over performance. Ultimately, Shreyas Iyer’s Asia Cup snub has become a talking point not just about one player but about India’s selection philosophy. Do numbers and performances carry enough weight, or is the system increasingly skewed by pre-decided combinations and preferences? Iyer himself continues to remain professional, focused on domestic cricket and franchise commitments. But the question hangs heavy over the Asia Cup: is India overlooking one of its most reliable middle-order batsmen at the exact moment he should be playing a pivotal role? As the tournament unfolds without him, the debate will not be about whether Iyer deserved selection – that much is already clear – but whether Indian cricket can afford to keep sidelining him in its pursuit of balance.

Asia Cup 2025 Why Shreyas Iyer keeps getting overlooked Numbers dont lie

The Statistical Case Numbers alone should have guaranteed Iyer a spot. The Leader India Doesn’t Pick But Iyer’s case is about more than just runs. The Selectors’ Stand Chief selector Ajit Agarkar defended the decision, saying Iyer had done ‘nothing wrong’ but ‘needs to wait for his chance’. Sports science is a crucial part of modern-day sports, including cricket. It helps in measuring the agility, stamina, strength and overall physical strength and readiness of players. Fitness plays a big role in players' performance, especially in long matches and on demanding tours (five-match Test series). In a major step to improve fitness levels in the Indian cricket team, the BCCI has introduced a new fitness method - the Bronco test. Let's understand what this test is.
What is Bronco test?
The Bronco test is a running-based fitness test borrowed from rugby. It is designed to test a player’s aerobic capacity, endurance, and stamina. In this test, a player has to run a given distance in a specific pattern and complete it in a short time. Here’s how it is designed. Also read | Who are the oldest players in IPL history?
Why was this test introduced?
The decision came after some of India’s fast bowlers were found to be not fit enough during the five-match Test series in England. Only Mohammed Siraj was able to play in all five tests. The team’s strength and conditioning coach, Adrian le Roux, along with head coach Gautam Gambhir, suggested the test to ensure that players, especially fast bowlers, focus more on running and endurance rather than just gym workouts.
Other fitness tests to continue
Along with the Bronco test, the Indian team still uses the well-known Yo-Yo Test and the 2-kilometre time trial. For the 2km test, fast bowlers must finish it in 8 minutes 15 seconds, while batters, spinners and wicketkeepers have a target of 8 minutes 30 seconds. The Yo-Yo Test involves short shuttle runs at increasing speed. The minimum fitness level for the Yo-Yo test is set at 17.1.

The BCCI has introduced the Bronco test, a new rugby-style fitness test, to improve the endurance and aerobic capacity of Indian cricketers, especially fast bowlers. The test includes 1,200 metres of continuous running and aims to raise fitness standards.

Per Hindustan Times, an ICC spokesperson admitted the mistake, “There was an error in our rankings tables today, but it has been rectified,” the official said. What happened? On Wednesday (Aug 20), the ICC released the latest rankings for ODI batters, with Rohit and Kohli nowhere to be found. Already placed in the top five, alongside the ranked number one batter, Shubman Gill, their names going missing from the list surprised everyone. Considering their international retirement talks have made headlines lately (with none having announced it yet), it is clear that it was a technical glitch from the ICC’s end. Having last played the ODIs in February (during the Champions Trophy in the UAE), both played pivotal roles in helping India reign supreme and create history with the most CT titles (3) among all teams. The ICC, however, has rectified their mistake, with both back on the list of top-ranked ODI batters in their respective spots. Meanwhile, when this error occurred, Babar Azam, the former Pakistan captain, was placed just behind Gill in the second position. The current top ten list, however, includes four Indians, with Shreyas Iyer being the fourth, sitting in the eighth spot. Per the latest report, Iyer has emerged as BCCI’s first choice pick for the ODI captaincy after Rohit Sharma, even ahead of Shubman Gill, who was to assume all-format captaincy. Although Gill has already taken over the Test captaincy from Rohit since his retirement, he is in line to be Suryakumar’s replacement in the shortest format.

After Asia Cup snub, ex-Pakistan captain joins CPL side as Fazalhaq Farooqi's replacement

Just days after the BCCI men’s selection committee overlooked Shreyas Iyer for the 15-man Asia Cup squad, the latest reports seemed to be doing some compensation for it. Iyer, who led two different IPL teams to finals in back-to-back seasons, even winning a title with one (KKR in 2024), is now leading the race to replace Rohit Sharma as Team India’s new ODI captain. Luis Suarez scored a penalty in each half to give Inter Miami a 2-1 victory over Tigres UANL on Wednesday (Aug 20), stepping up to fill the void after Lionel Messi was ruled out of the Leagues Cup quarter-final clash. Messi, who has battled a "minor" muscle injury since a Leagues Cup group match on August 2, returned Saturday after a two-week absence, scoring a goal after coming on as a substitute in a 3-1 win over the Los Angeles Galaxy. However, the 38-year-old World Cup winner was ruled out against Tigres as Inter advanced in the cross-border club competition for teams from Major League Soccer and Mexico's Liga MX. In a duel that produced few scoring chances, veteran Uruguay striker Suarez was the difference as Inter kept alive their hopes of regaining the title they won in 2023, during Messi's first season in MLS. Things swung Miami's way in the 20th minute when Javier Aquino slid to intercept a cross, and the ball hit his left arm in the area. The referee awarded the penalty, and the 38-year-old Suarez converted. Tempers flared, with Suarez moving to calm things down after Miami teammate Rodrigo De Paul and Uruguayan compatriot Fernando Gorriaran exchanged words. Inter coach Javier Mascherano was sent off at halftime, receiving a red card for heated protestations to officials after injury time dragged on past what had been indicated. Mascherano watched from a front row of the stands when Tigres grabbed their equaliser in the 67th minute, Angel Correa slipping between two defenders and beating Miami keeper Oscar Ustari. Another handball by Aquino in the 87th minute, confirmed by VAR, gave Miami another penalty and Suarez converted again, this time going to the left as goalkeeper Nahuel Guzman dived in the opposite direction. Miami's game with Tigres was one of four Leagues Cup quarter-finals set for Wednesday. Emma Raducanu returns to Flushing Meadows with a sense of deja vu, but the stakes are very different. Back in 2021, she was the teenager who shocked the sport by winning the US Open as a qualifier, producing one of the most improbable Slam runs in modern tennis. Four years later, she arrives in New York not as a reigning champion or headline act, but as a player looking to rebuild her career brick by brick. The question is no longer whether she can repeat her fairytale—it’s whether she can reinvent herself.
The Blessing and the Curse of 2021
Raducanu’s maiden Slam win came with the euphoria of triumph but also the baggage of expectation. She was thrust into a spotlight few 18-year-olds could handle: multimillion-dollar sponsorships, constant scrutiny, and the burden of being Britain’s next superstar. The narrative quickly shifted from celebration to skepticism when she struggled to back up her breakthrough. Her game—fluid, attacking, instinctive—was suddenly micro-analyzed. Every defeat was treated as a crisis, every coaching change as a sign of instability. Injuries, most significantly her recurring wrist and ankle problems, kept her off the tour for extended spells. In hindsight, her 2021 US Open feels both like a once-in-a-generation triumph and a poisoned chalice.
The Injuries and the Reset
The past 18 months have been brutal. Surgeries on both wrists and an ankle meant Raducanu effectively pressed the reset button on her career. For a player whose movement and timing are central to her game, the layoffs disrupted rhythm, match fitness, and confidence. Yet, paradoxically, this enforced break may have given her something she lacked post-2021: perspective. Stripped of ranking points and spotlight, she’s been allowed to work on her body, her mindset, and the fundamentals of her game without the crushing weight of public expectation.
A Lower Base, A Clearer Mind
Unlike her peers, Raducanu enters this US Open without the suffocating pressure of defending big points. Her ranking has dipped outside the top 100, meaning she comes in as an underdog rather than a headliner. That shift in perception could be liberating. For the first time since her breakthrough, she has space to be judged not by past glories but by present progress. Every match won feels like a step forward, not a standard she must replicate. This is Raducanu 2.0: not the teenage sensation of 2021, but a player in transition, learning to build a sustainable career rather than chase lightning in a bottle. Technically, Raducanu’s baseline aggression, clean ball-striking, and court intelligence remain undimmed. What’s been missing is continuity—stringing together matches and tournaments without interruption. Her recent outings show flashes: the forehand winners, the fearless returns, the ability to disrupt opponents’ rhythm. But Raducanu 2.0 isn’t about fireworks. It’s about grit, endurance, and redefining what success looks like. Making the second week in New York, or simply playing without physical setbacks, would be victories in themselves. The narrative around Raducanu now has less to do with Grand Slam titles and more with credibility. Can she establish herself as a regular force on tour, competing week in, week out? Can she stay healthy long enough to let her tennis evolve naturally? The endorsements, the spotlight, the media frenzy—they will always follow her. But if Raducanu 2.0 is to succeed, she must carve out a new identity: not as the prodigy who shocked the world once, but as a professional capable of building longevity in a ruthless sport. In many ways, this US Open is less a continuation of Raducanu’s story than a fresh start. The Emma Raducanu of 2021 was a dreamer who caught lightning in a bottle. The Emma Raducanu of 2025 is a fighter, reshaping her game, her body, and her narrative. Raducanu 2.0 doesn’t need to win the title. She needs to show that she can play, compete, and grow without the burden of her past weighing her down. And in doing so, she may just set the stage for a more sustainable, more authentic version of success.

The 22-year-old tennis player from United Kingdom is the 2021 US Open champion. Emma will be looking to replicate the same form this year

For Sanat Sangwan, one of the bright sparks in this season’s Delhi Premier League (DPL), cricket is as much about belief as it is about runs. Representing Outer Delhi Warriors, the left-hander has amassed 143 runs in six matches at an average of 23.83. But beyond numbers, it is his fearless approach that has caught the eye — an attitude shaped by early interactions with India’s star wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant. “Pant bhai gave me his bat and gloves, and more than that, his advice to always enjoy the game and stay confident,” Sangwan said in an exclusive interview with WION. “He has a very jolly nature, never lets you feel pressure. Whether in the nets or in a Ranji match, he has always kept the environment light.” Reflecting on the current campaign, Sangwan admitted it has been a rollercoaster for his side. “There is a mix of ups and downs. We are losing a lot of close matches, some things are out of control on the ground. But I believe we have given our best in every match,” he said. With three games left, the Warriors are taking it ‘game by game’ with the aim to finish their campaign on a winning note. Since its inception, DPL has also been a platform for young talent under the eyes of IPL scouts. Sangwan recognises the pressure that brings. “Yes, there is pressure, but exposure here is important. If you play in IPL, the pressure will be double. I believe DPL is preparing youngsters for the big stage.” Sangwan himself embodies that fearlessness. “I want to play fearless. Even if I am chasing a low target, I’ll still look to hit from the first ball. Only if the situation demands — say, we lose 3-4 early wickets — will I adjust. Otherwise, my style remains the same,” he explained. Technically, he has worked on introducing a trigger movement for T20s and improving his game against short-pitched deliveries. But at heart, his philosophy remains simple: “Take the game long, stay calm, breathe deep in pressure situations.”
Inspired by Rishabh Pant
Sangwan’s admiration for Pant runs deep. Having known him since his under-16 days, he says Pant’s belief and encouragement shaped his game. “He likes my batting a lot. Whenever I bat in the nets, he praises me and tells me small things I can improve.” Around him in the Warriors’ camp, youngsters like Priyansh Arya and Karan have been showcasing similar fearless cricket. “If you are aggressive, stick to it. Don’t change just because you’re on a big platform. I like seeing that,” Sangwan said, pointing to IPL star Vaibhav Suryavanshi as an example. For now, Sangwan remains focused on finishing the season strong. Whether through orthodox strokeplay or a rare unorthodox flick, he insists instinct will guide him. “If I get the instinct, I’ll follow it,” he smiled — a reflection of his belief in fearless cricket.

The Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Bill, 2025 was passed by the Lok Sabha on Wednesday (August 20). However, for this vision to truly materialise, it is critical that the terminology used in the bill, particularly the distinctions between esports, online gaming, online social gaming, and online money gaming be clearly defined and uniformly understood. “The absence of precise definitions has often led to ambiguity and conflation around the term ‘esports’. Such overlaps can create confusion not just for regulators, but also for players, teams, investors, and organisers who are working hard to build this industry.” Animesh Agarwal, co-founder and CEO, S8UL Esports also shared his views. This bill marks a historic turning point for Indian esports.
