On 16 March 2025, Alexander Isak secured his place in Newcastle United folklore by helping the club win its first major trophy since 1955 and ending a 70-year drought. However, just five months after that League Cup victory, both Isak and Newcastle face fresh controversy as the striker is now pushing for a transfer to Liverpool. Throughout these months following the win, Isak has publicly criticised the Newcastle board, accusing them of breaking promises. So what exactly is happening in the Alexander Isak-Newcastle United saga, and why is it now the centre of attention?
The breaking point
On Tuesday (Aug 19), Isak skipped the Professional Footballers' Association (PFA) award ceremony where he was inducted into the Premier League Team of the Season for 2024-25. And just hours later, he came out with a cryptic message, accusing the Newcastle United board. In reality, Isak has accused Newcastle of blocking his transfer to Merseyside, with Liverpool keen on the move and ready to splurge the required cash. "The reality is that promises were made and the club has known my position for a long time," Isak wrote on his Instagram.
What is the reality?
Playing for Liverpool, representing the six-time European and 20-time English champions, is a dream for any professional player. While not many get the opportunity, 25-year-old Isak is one of those players who could be about to pursue his dream. The striker has a release clause in his current Newcastle contract and letting go of an opportunity to play for Liverpool could come back as the biggest regret of his life. Isak has all the qualities to be a success story at Liverpool, having scored 54 Premier League goals and helping the club reach Champions League football on two occasions in the last three seasons. He has been named in the Premier League Team of the Season on each of the last two seasons, underlining his credibility. Considering an opportunity to represent a club of Liverpool’s caliber may not come again, Isak is using all his cards in the arsenal to push for a switch. ALSO READ | Asia Cup 2025, India's Probable Playing XI: Shubman Gill to open, Sanju Samson at No.3; Tilak Varma to miss out
Why are Newcastle blocking Isak’s transfer?
As things stand, Isak’s current contract runs out at the end of the 2027-28 season, meaning he still has three more years remaining on the deal. Considering Newcastle have big commitments in the Premier League and now the Champions League, Isak will be essential to the club’s success. In this case, the club is pushing its best to keep the Swedish striker. On the other hand, all of Newcastle’s major transfer targets have turned down the opportunity to join the club. This list includes Benjamin Šeško, Hugo Ekitike and other transfer targets. A Champions League and Premier League season without big match winners could affect the club’s chances as well. The club will also look to take advantage of a World Cup year, meaning it will be essential for the player to keep his hopes of playing in FIFA’s biggest tournament. In case he is unable to force a move to Liverpool and Newcastle end up fining the player with a suspension, it could hamper Isak’s chances of playing at the World Cup. He also has a stern competition in the form of Viktor Gyokeres and Anthony Elanga, while Dejan Kulusevski can play in the No.10s role for Sweden. ALSO READ | From Rohit Sharma to Virat Kohli, 5 Indian batters with most runs in Asia Cup (ODIs + T20Is)
What is the ideal situation?
In case Isak is unable to force a move out of Newcastle, he will have two more years remaining on his contract. This will mean Newcastle won’t be able to negotiate a big deal for Isak, as he could force a free transfer in the future. This will mean the club will lose more than $150 million in transfers, hampering the club’s financial growth. On the player side, a frozen-out season will see Isak stay out of contention for a place in the World Cup squad. However, the opportunity to play for Liverpool and the opportunity to lift a few more trophies will play in the player’s mind. Therefore, a transfer to Liverpool will present an ideal opportunity for Newcastle to inject cash into the club, while the player could also have his dream move.

India’s squad for the Asia Cup 2025 was announced on Tuesday (Aug 19) as the Men in Blue prepare to defend their title under the captaincy of Suryakumar Yadav. The Indian team, which had a couple of surprises, will now take to the field as they try to build a squad for the T20 World Cup which takes place in their own backyard in less than six months' time. So here is a detailed look at who could be in India’s Playing XI for the Asia Cup 2025 which starts on September 9 while the World Cup remains a long-term objective.
Gill, Abhishek to open?
It is highly likely that the Punjab duo of Abhishek Sharma and Shubman Gill will lead the Indian team’s Playing XI as they both bring tons of experience at the top. There are multiple reasons why the management could prefer the Gill-Abhishek pairing over Samson-Abhishek is as the former have a good chemistry, playing together for Punjab as well as for India U-19 in the past. This would mean Sanju Samson will have to drop to number three as the wicketkeeper-batting option in the side. Jitesh Sharma is unlikely to make the Playing XI, considering his natural No.6 is already facing stern competition. Therefore, Samson’s position as the only wicketkeeper-batter cements his place in the Playing XI. He will also act as a backup opener in case Gill or Abhishek are unavailable. With Gill, Samson and Abhishek preferred, it won't be a surprise if Tilak Varma misses out. Captain Suryakumar Yadav and Hardik Pandya should tick the box for the middle order as they are the backbone of the Playing XI. Mbappe finished as La Liga's top scorer with 31 goals in his first season in Spain, and is now wearing the number 10 shirt vacated by Luka Modric after the Croatian left for AC Milan last month. "I don't know if it's linked to the new number or not, or simply to his desire to win, but he wants to improve individual and collective performance and inspire his team-mates," added Alonso. "You can see his desire every day. Today he created those decisive moments that enable us to win matches." Madrid had a shortened pre-season after their run to the Club World Cup semi-finals in July, but Alonso has been adamant that would not be used as an excuse after their request for the Osasuna match to be postponed to a later date was rejected. "To start on the right foot is key in La Liga. We know we weren't well prepared," Madrid defender Dani Carvajal told DAZN. "But we basically didn't suffer and it was a complete display." Spain international Carvajal came off the bench for his first league appearance since October after a long-term knee injury, replacing Trent Alexander-Arnold in the second half. Madrid though were without England midfielder Jude Bellingham, who is expected to be sidelined until October as he recovers from a operation to solve a recurrent shoulder issue. Madrid are looking to turn the page on a disappointing end to the Carlo Ancelotti era after relinquishing both their domestic and European crowns last season. Alonso's side had to show patience against an Osasuna team that finished ninth last term, with the hosts largely restricted to long-range efforts from centre-backs Huijsen and Eder Militao in the first half. Osasuna goalkeeper Sergio Herrera was equal to both, while Mbappe failed to connect cleanly after being picked out by Vinicius Junior before he curled another shot wide as Madrid struggled to break down their opponents. But Mbappe grabbed the only goal six minutes after half-time after he went down following a clumsy challenge by Cruz as he tried to cut past the defender. Mbappe duly got up and running for the new campaign as he sent Herrera the wrong way from the spot. Alonso handed 18-year-old Argentine winger Franco Mastantuono his debut midway through the second half as Madrid controlled the game and seldom looked troubled. Ante Budimir headed over in a rare opportunity for Osasuna and Mastantuono was denied late on by Herrera. Osasuna finished the match with 10 men with Abel Bretones sent off in stoppage time for throwing an arm to block the run of Gonzalo Garcia. The Indian Golf Premier League (IGPL) announced a landmark collaboration with the Women’s Golf Association of India (WGAI), aiming to revolutionise the sport with a mixed-format league that puts men and women on the same platform for the first time in India. Speaking at an exclusive media roundtable, WGAI Secretary General Champika Sayal underlined how the initiative aligns with global trends in golf. “Golf has always been seen as an individual sport, but the future is about inclusion and creativity. With the Olympics introducing a mixed doubles format in 2028, IGPL’s integrated structure could not be more timely,” she said. Sayal emphasised the value of team competition, equal opportunities, and fan engagement. “Golf is becoming expensive, and we need to create a team spirit to bring more fans into the game. IGPL’s franchise-style events will provide our players with more exposure, financial backing, and the chance to share the field with international stars. This is the right time for such an evolution.” The WGAI chief also confirmed that the partnership will see a seamless sharing of schedules. “IGPL has planned 8–10 events in its first season, and we’ve created a timeshare so players can balance international commitments with the domestic calendar. Our top six from the Hero Women’s Professional Golf Tour Order of Merit will automatically qualify, with six more invited from around the world.” Among India’s leading players, there is clear excitement. Current Order of Merit leader Vani Kapoor called it a bold step forward. “I think IGPL marks the start of a new era for Indian golf. It’s giving us a platform where the sport is visible, fun, and aspirational. For women golfers especially, equal prize money and equal opportunities are game-changing,” she said. Kapoor, who has enjoyed a strong domestic season before returning to the Ladies European Tour, also highlighted the importance of inclusivity. “What excites me is not just the prize money, but the chance to share experiences with men, seniors, and amateurs on the same platform. That will help us all grow together as a golfing community.” Her compatriot Ridhima Dilawari, currently No. 2 on the Order of Merit, echoed that sentiment. “For me, what stands out is visibility. Indian women golfers are performing internationally, but often without the recognition they deserve. IGPL’s focus on media and storytelling can finally help fans know who we are and where we come from. That’s how you build real connections between athletes and supporters,” she said. Dilawari also noted the potential to bring in new audiences. “In India, we’ve seen how cricket grew by changing formats. Golf needs to experiment too. If IGPL can capture even a fraction of that viewership with its mixed teams and fresh formats, it could change the landscape for the sport.” With six teams set to feature in the inaugural season, equal representation for women, and strong support from both the WGAI and professional players, IGPL is positioning itself as a disruptive force in Indian sport. As Sayal summed it up: “The sky is the limit. This is the first time such an opportunity has come to Indian golf, and we are proud to be part of it.”

Punjab Kings' Priyansh Arya’s Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season was a mix of ups and downs, but one that reflected his maturity as an aggressive batter. After not so good starts — scores of 26, 16, and 8 in his first three innings in the ongoing edition of the Delhi Premier League — he bounced back with a smashing century, reminding everyone why he is considered one of Delhi’s most exciting young talents. Reflecting on that turnaround, Priyansh admits he needed a small course correction. “Right from the beginning of the innings, I was trying to be aggressive a little too much. My coach told me to spend some time on the wicket, see the ball, and then attack. That made all the difference,” he said while speaking to WION. Sharing the dressing room with international stars has been another step forward for the 24-year-old. “The biggest learning was to back my skills as much as possible,” he shared. Spending time with legends like Ricky Ponting and Shreyas Iyer left a lasting impression: “I had a lot of freedom from both of them. Whether it’s scoring 30 in 10 balls or 30 in 30 balls — if it’s good for the team, it’s valuable.” One lesson even came after failure. “I remember that I was out first ball against Jofra Archer in one of the matches. After the match Ponting told me, ‘Next time if a bowler comes at you, try hitting a six first ball. That gave me confidence,” Priyansh recalled with a smile. Priyansh first came in the spotlight last year when he smashed six sixes in an over during the inaugural edition of the Delhi Premier League. Expectations naturally rose this season, but he insists pressure has never been the issue. “There was no pressure last year, and no pressure this year as well. I only expect myself to perform better than before.” Still, he knows his game must grow. “Consistency is the main thing. Impactful innings are good, but if the team doesn’t win, then I have to bring more consistency.” While he has made his name in T20s, Priyansh is clear about his next target — red-ball cricket. “I want to play red-ball cricket for Delhi. The conditions are different, the challenge is tougher. But if it’s not challenging, it won’t be fun,” he says, while adding that current India Test captain Shubman Gill is his inspiration in the longer format of the game. Priyansh’s journey from the Delhi Premier League to the IPL is now well known, and he continues to see the DPL as the perfect platform for talent. “Every franchise has scouts coming here. Players are being picked from here. If you keep it simple and focus on consistency, that’s the best way forward." Now representing Outer Delhi Warriors after a season with South Delhi Superstars, he has quickly adapted to the new environment. He also recalled about his partnership with Karan. “When he hit that shot on the first ball and it went for a boundary, I knew he was fearless. I like his confidence,” Priyansh shared. Coming to the league, Priyansh Arya's Outer Delhi Warriors is at the bottom of the table with just three points from seven matches. The left-handed batter has 191 runs to his name in the ongoing edition along with one century.

In the ongoing edition of the Delhi Premier League being played at the Arun Jaitley stadium, the 24-year-old has 191 runs from seven matches at an average of 31.83

Asia Cup 2025: All you need to know - full squads, complete fixtures, date, time, venue and other key details

The wait is over; the BCCI selectors and T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav have picked a power-packed 15-man India squad for the 2025 Asia Cup, starting on September 9 in the UAE. Newly-appointed Test captain Shubman Gill returns to the side, while the selectors overlooked Shreyas Iyer for the eight-team tournament. On the other hand, ace quick Jasprit Bumrah also headlines the pace attack, with the selectors picking as many as three spinners.
Here is the full squad -
Suryakumar Yadav (captain), Shubman Gill (vice-captain), Abhishek Sharma, Tilak Varma, Hardik Pandya, Shivam Dube, Axar Patel, Jitesh Sharma (WK), Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh, Varun Chakaravarthy, Kuldeep Yadav, Sanju Samson (WK), Harshit Rana and Rinku Singh Amid all reports of the selectors contemplating picking either Gill or Shreyas Iyer for the continental tournament, they made up their choice, picking Gill and naming him as the vice-captain. The selectors have backed the core, including openers Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson, with Tilak Varma also being retained. While the plus remains that most of those who featured in the past two T20I series, including Hardik Pandya, Rinku Singh and Axar Patel, have also been retained, bringing back Jitesh Sharma as a spare keeper comes as a boost for the Indian Team. Shivam Dube’s inclusion also improves the all-rounders’ column. India’s fast bowling department includes three seamers - Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh and Harshit Rana, with Kuldeep Yadav and Varun Chakaravarthy being the two frontline spinners. Meanwhile, the selectors, however, took some harsh calls by dropping some of the top names and aspiring contenders for the Asia Cup, including Yashasvi Jaiswal, Washington Sundar, and Nitish Kumar Reddy, among others. Jaiswal, Sundar, Dhruv Jurel, Riyan Parag and Prasidh Krishna are part of the standby players.
No Iyer for Asia Cup
The biggest miss of the lot was Shreyas Iyer. The Indian team’s white-ball mainstay was largely touted to be picked for the 2025 Asia Cup, but the selectors, the head coach and SKY decided against bringing him back. His exclusion comes as a shock to the fans, as Iyer’s credentials were too strong to avoid him. In the past two IPL seasons, Iyer led two different sides to the final, winning the title with one (KKR in 2024). His calm demeanour and leadership skills could have come in handy for the Indian Team, besides his experience of playing in these conditions, having earlier helped the Indian Team clinch the Champions Trophy in the UAE early this year. Meanwhile, India is placed in Group A alongside arch-rivals Pakistan, Oman, and the tournament host (the UAE). Group B consists of the remaining four teams, including Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Hong Kong. The marquee India vs Pakistan Group game is scheduled for Sunday (Sep 14), with both expected to meet again later in the tournament.

Cincinnati Open: Iga Swiatek beats Jasmine Paolini to clinch WTA title

Former France midfielder Lassana Diarra is seeking €65 million ($76 million) in damages from FIFA and the Belgian Football Association, his lawyer announced on Monday, in a long-running legal dispute over football’s transfer rules. The 39-year-old’s case against FIFA led to a landmark ruling by the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) last October, which found parts of the governing body’s transfer regulations to be in breach of EU law. Despite that decision, Diarra says no settlement has been reached. His lawyer, Martin Hissel, said the claim represents “compensation for damage caused by FIFA rules” on transfers. “Following a ruling by the CJEU, in the absence of an amicable solution, it is natural to return to the national courts so that they can implement the CJEU ruling,” Hissel said. He added that Belgian courts are expected to issue their decision within 12 to 15 months. The CJEU determined that FIFA’s regulations restrict the free movement of players by creating “considerable legal risks, unforeseeable and potentially very high financial risks as well as major sporting risks” for footballers and clubs, thereby distorting the transfer market. The case dates back to Diarra’s 2014 exit from Russian club Lokomotiv Moscow. The midfielder’s contract was terminated on grounds of alleged breaches, with the club demanding €20 million in compensation. Diarra disputed the claim and sought damages himself, but FIFA eventually ordered him to pay Lokomotiv €10 million, a ruling later upheld by the Court of Arbitration for Sport. He was also handed a backdated 15-month suspension. As a result, Belgian club Charleroi pulled out of signing Diarra, fearing liability for the penalties under FIFA’s rules—a decision that became central to his legal challenge. Following the CJEU’s ruling, FIFA introduced an “interim regulatory framework” for transfers last December. But Diarra said he was disappointed that no settlement talks had been initiated. “I waited a few months before restarting the national proceedings in Belgium, thinking that, particularly following the efforts of FIFPRO Europe, FIFA and the Belgian football association would at least have the decency to contact me to propose an amicable settlement,” Diarra said in a statement. “This was not the case. It is their right, but it reflects a persistent culture of contempt for the rule of law and for players, despite the very clear message sent by the CJEU. To my great regret, we will therefore once again have to go before the judges, as I have no other choice.” Capped 34 times by France, Diarra enjoyed spells at Chelsea, Arsenal, Portsmouth, and Real Madrid before retiring at Paris Saint-Germain in 2019.

The Supreme Court on Monday (August 18) agreed to hear on August 22 the dispute between the All India Football Federation (AIFF) and Football Sports Development Limited (FSDL) over the future of the Indian Super League (ISL), following the non-renewal of contracts that has left 11 clubs facing uncertainty.
