2026 FIFA World Cup draw to take place at Kennedy Centre says US President Donald Trump

US President Donald Trump on Friday (August 22) announced that the draw for the 2026 FIFA World Cup will take place at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC. The president announced from the Oval Office. “Some people refer to it as the TRUMP Kennedy Center, but we are not prepared to do that. Maybe in a week or so,” the president was quoted as saying. The draw will take place on December 5, 2025. The US president was accompanied by FIFA President Gianni Infantino by his side. '2026 FIFA World Cup draw to take place at Kennedy Center', says US President Donald Trump

When the gavel came down at this year’s Pro Kabaddi League (PKL) auction and Pardeep Narwal’s name went unsold, it felt like the end of an era. For over a decade, the “Dubki King” had been the face of modern kabaddi—rewriting raiding records, pulling teams back from the brink, and becoming the sport’s first true superstar. But as PKL enters its 12th season on August 29, the unsold status of Narwal is a stark reminder that the league, much like the game itself, waits for no one.
The youth wave takes over
The upcoming season will feature 137 matches across four cities, and while the familiar names of Naveen Kumar, Pawan Sehrawat, and Fazel Atrachali will still draw cheers, it is the younger generation that franchises are betting big on. Players from the Yuva Kabaddi Series and the under-23 pool fetched surprisingly high bids, underscoring how talent pipelines are now central to PKL’s future. This generational handover isn’t just about age—it’s about style. The traditional “power raider” image is giving way to quicker, more versatile players who can both raid and defend. Teams are consciously building multi-utility line-ups, preparing for the marathon of two months where flexibility often outshines brute force.
The new power centres
Historically, PKL’s narrative has been dominated by certain franchises—Patna Pirates during Narwal’s prime, Bengaluru Bulls with Pawan Sehrawat, or Dabang Delhi’s fairytale with Naveen Kumar. But Season 12 feels more open than ever. Teams like Jaipur Pink Panthers and Tamil Thalaivas have invested in young, athletic squads. U Mumba, once the powerhouse of the early seasons, is attempting a reset too. What this means is unpredictability. Fans might not see one team or one player bossing the season in the way Narwal once did. Instead, the spotlight may be shared by a cluster of breakout stars who redefine how kabaddi is played. Beyond the mat, the league has cemented itself as more than just a domestic tournament. PKL was instrumental in taking kabaddi from rural grounds to primetime television. Season after season, it has blended folk roots with glitzy packaging, ensuring kabaddi sits comfortably alongside cricket and football in India’s sporting calendar. But the challenge for Season 12 is to keep that cultural moment alive. The nostalgia of Narwal, Rahul Chaudhari, and Ajay Thakur once brought millions of viewers. Can the new generation inspire the same loyalty? The league’s future depends on it.
What lies ahead?
The absence of some big names may feel like a void, but it also creates space for stories waiting to be told. Every season of PKL has thrown up unlikely heroes—be it Surender Nada’s defensive walls, Naveen Kumar’s meteoric rise, or Pawan Sehrawat’s “hi-flyer” exploits. Season 12, in many ways, feels like a clean slate. If kabaddi’s first decade of stardom belonged to legends like Pardeep Narwal, the next one will belong to youngsters still learning to shoulder that legacy. PKL 12 is not just another season—it is the season that decides whether kabaddi can regenerate its superstars and sustain its mass appeal. And that’s why, when the whistle blows on August 29, it won’t just be a game of raids and tackles. It will be a referendum on the future of India’s homegrown sport.

Matthew Breetzke scored a brilliant 88 and fast bowler Lungi Ngidi took five wickets as South Africa defeated Australia by 84 runs in the second one-day international in Mackay on Friday (August 22). With this win, the Proteas also secured the three-match series 2–0, making Sunday’s final game a dead rubber. South Africa had already dominated the first match, winning by 98 runs. This result means Australia have now lost their last five ODI series against the Proteas. Also Read: Dewald Brevis and the art of no-look sixes. South Africa lost both openers early to Xavier Bartlett, who dismissed Markram for a duck and Ryan Rickelton for eight. But Breetzke played with confidence, hitting eight fours and two sixes on his way to 88. He first shared a 67-run partnership with Tony de Zorzi (38), and then added 89 runs with Tristan Stubbs. There are audacious strokes in cricket, and then there is what Dewald Brevis did in Cairns. South Africa’s prodigious young batter has always carried a reputation for flair, but against Australia in the third T20I, he pushed that boundary further, quite literally. In a 26-ball hurricane, Brevis not only cleared the ropes six times but did so with a hat-trick of “no-look sixes”—a phrase that now feels destined to be attached permanently to his name. Also Read: Indian Super League in limbo: Can Indian football turn crisis into reform? The sequence unfolded in the tenth over of the innings. Facing Aaron Hardie, Brevis unleashed a pull that soared over the deep mid-wicket region. He didn’t even bother to follow the ball with his eyes; the sound off the bat was enough. The next delivery, he stepped across and lofted down the ground, again turning his back almost immediately. By the time the third one flew over long-off, the Australian crowd was gasping, and social media was already flooding with clips of the audacity. Three balls, three no-look sixes—an exhibition of timing and self-belief as much as brute force.
The Brevis effect: A new signature shot in the making
What makes these shots so compelling is not just their novelty. Plenty of batters have played “don’t-bother-to-look” drives or turned away knowing they had connected well. But Brevis has taken it from instinct to performance art. He seems to revel in the theatre of the moment: head turned, bat held aloft, body language screaming that he knew the outcome before anyone else did. In the modern T20 landscape, where entertainment value is almost as prized as statistics, Brevis has hit upon a signature that sets him apart. Also Read: BCCI to replace two men's national team selectors, day after Ajit Agarkar's contract extension - Report
Will Brevis's no-look six continue?
There is, of course, substance behind the style. Brevis’ innings of 53 off 26 balls powered South Africa to a commanding total and set up the series. More importantly, his tally of sixes across the tour broke records previously held by some of the game’s giants. For a player still carving his space at the international level, this was less about swagger and more about announcing intent: he is not here to just survive in the middle order, he is here to dominate. Every cricket generation has its symbols of confidence—Viv Richards’ walk, MS Dhoni’s signature helicopter shot, AB de Villiers’ 360-degree range. Brevis, still only in the early chapters of his career, may have found his. The no-look six is more than a viral clip; it is a marker of a new age batter who thrives on instinct, improvisation, and spectacle. The question now is whether this becomes a recurring part of his arsenal or remains a highlight reel special. Either way, Dewald Brevis has ensured that when people look back at this series, they will remember not just South Africa’s win, but the night cricket gained a new piece of theatre.

The Brevis effect: A new signature shot in the making What makes these shots so compelling is not just their novelty. Also Read: BCCI to replace two men's national team selectors, day after Ajit Agarkar's contract extension - Report Will Brevis's no-look six continue?

The 22-year-old right-hand South African batter scripted history when he made the second-fastest century for the Proteas in T20I cricket in just 41 balls

Indian football stands at a moment of reckoning. The Indian Super League (ISL), once celebrated as the flagship project to modernise the game, has been thrown into uncertainty. What was supposed to be the sport’s most stable and glamorous platform is now caught in a tug-of-war between the federation, its commercial partners, and the country’s highest court. The result is paralysis at every level—from clubs suspending operations to players waiting anxiously for clarity. The standoff is not merely a contractual dispute. It represents something deeper: the tension between governance and commerce. On one side, the All India Football Federation (AIFF) is bound by constitutional reform and the scrutiny of the Supreme Court. On the other hand, the commercial rights holder and participating clubs demand continuity, financial certainty, and predictability. For years, the league managed to balance both forces, but with legal oversight intensifying, the contradictions have finally come to the surface. Also Read: PKL 2025 — 'We worked on our shortcomings, this season we aim for the title': UP Yoddhas coach Jasveer Singh The immediate fallout is grim. The road ahead can be imagined in three broad scenarios. In the best case, the Supreme Court delivers a clear and decisive ruling that allows the league to resume quickly, whether by reaffirming existing contracts or by sanctioning a new framework. This would not eliminate the mistrust that has built up among stakeholders, but it would at least bring immediate relief and enable the season to begin. A darker possibility is prolonged limbo. If the legal wrangling drags on and the season is cancelled, the damage will be immense. Clubs that were already financially stretched could collapse. The idea of shared ownership and transparent structures could be the silver lining of what now looks like chaos. The lessons from this moment are hard to ignore. Second, player welfare cannot be left at the mercy of disputes between administrators and investors. Mechanisms must be built to ensure salaries and contracts are protected, regardless of boardroom battles. And finally, fans—who are the ultimate stakeholders—deserve better. Their trust has been tested before; another breakdown risks alienating the very base the league worked so hard to create. What happens next will depend on the verdict from the Supreme Court on August 28 and the willingness of stakeholders to act with foresight. The court can decide the fate of contracts, but it cannot rebuild trust or vision. That task rests with the administrators and clubs who must now decide whether they want to patch up old arrangements or genuinely reform the system. Indian football is staring at a fork in the road. Down one path lies short-term fixes, fragile deals, and recurring crises. Down the other lies reform, stability, and credibility. The choice made now will determine not just whether the next ISL season happens, but whether Indian football has the resilience to grow into the future.

As the Pro Kabaddi League enters its 12th season, UP Yoddhas head coach Jasveer Singh believes his side has the right blend of youth and experience to mount a serious title challenge. Having finished third last season, Singh insists the team has learned from its mistakes and is determined to go all the way. A key part of UP Yoddhas’ strategy this year is the promotion of six players from their Yuva Yoddhas program. Singh was quick to single out Shivam Chaudhary as someone he expects to make an immediate impact. “He has been with our academy and also played junior nationals. I have high expectations from him,” the coach said in an exclusive conversation with WION. Also Read: ICC Women's Cricket World Cup 2025: ICC announces updated venue, replaces M.Chinnaswamy with DY Patil Stadium. But while youth brings energy, Singh knows experience remains crucial. “It is important to have experienced players, but at the same time, we must prepare new ones for the future,” he explained. “With the new rules, if you retain players for three years, they become a strong asset for the team. Today, there are so many academies which have opened, and the game has grown tremendously. The league has created opportunities for countless youngsters,” he reflected. Looking ahead, Singh is clear about his target: “Last time we finished third. This season, we want to correct our mistakes and become champions," he signed off.

For years, mixed doubles at the Grand Slams has lived in the shadows. Tucked away on outer courts, with sparse crowds and modest prize money, it often felt like a polite afterthought rather than a true showcase. The 2025 US Open decided to flip that script — and in doing so, turned a forgotten format into one of the most talked-about events of the fortnight. This wasn’t the mixed doubles of old. Instead of meandering matches played in empty corners of the Billie Jean King Tennis Center, the tournament condensed the action into a two-day sprint, slotted during Fan Week when attention is at its peak. Short sets, no-advantage scoring, and match tiebreaks were designed to guarantee drama and keep the pace brisk. And then came the real hook: a $1 million prize for the winners — a figure that instantly catapulted the event into prime-time relevance.
Star power arrives
It wasn’t just the money. The draw looked like something dreamed up in a fan’s imagination. Carlos Alcaraz and Emma Raducanu stepping onto court as partners, Jessica Pegula testing her doubles chops, and even veterans like Venus Williams mixing it up with the next generation. Names that usually command Ashe Stadium for gruelling best-of-five marathons were now part of a quick-fire doubles shootout, and the crowds responded. The stands filled, the buzz spread online, and for the first time in a long time, mixed doubles felt like a showpiece. Also Read: Swiss international Noah Okafor move to Leeds heralds new English Premier League record And yet, tennis has a way of humbling hype. While the stars brought the spotlight, it was the doubles specialists who brought the substance. Andrea Vavassori and Sara Errani, seasoned Italian campaigners with reflexes honed at the net, carved their way through the field and ultimately defended their title. Their victory wasn’t just a win on the scoreboard; it was a statement — that chemistry, positioning, and instinct still trump pure celebrity.
Success or stunt?
Was it a success? In terms of attention, absolutely. Crowds flocked, broadcasters leaned in, and social media lit up with clips of unlikely pairings and rapid-fire rallies. For a format often dismissed as filler, it was a breakthrough. But success comes with caveats. Doubles specialists voiced frustration at being sidelined, their usual spots handed to marquee singles players. Purists worried about whether gimmicks like short sets and oversized prize money diluted the spirit of the sport. The divide was clear: what thrilled audiences wasn’t necessarily embraced by those who grind week-in, week-out on the doubles circuit. What the US Open proved, however, is that there is an appetite for mixed doubles when it is packaged boldly. In an era when tennis is constantly seeking ways to engage younger audiences, the experiment offered a glimpse of what the sport could look like: faster, starrier, louder. Whether the other majors follow suit remains to be seen, but one thing is certain — mixed doubles is no longer invisible.

Carlos Alcaraz, Emma Raducanu, Jessica Pegula and others — Did star power save mixed doubles at the US Open?

Star power arrives It wasn’t just the money. Whether the other majors follow suit remains to be seen, but one thing is certain — mixed doubles is no longer invisible.

The 2025 US Open reimagined mixed doubles, transforming it from a sidelined event into a fan favourite. By condensing the format into a two-day showcase during fan week, adding fast-paced rules, and offering a $1 million prize, the tournament drew top singles stars and packed crowds

Noah Okafor's move from AC Milan to Leeds United on Thursday, worth a reported £18 million ($24 million), means English Premier League clubs have spent more than the previous record in a single transfer window. The money spent on the 25-year-old Swiss international, who signed a four-year deal, takes the total outlay by the clubs to £2.37 billion, passing the previous mark of £2.36 billion in the summer of 2023. That total will only grow as there is still over a week to go before the transfer window closes. Okafor, capped 24 times, made his name at Austrian side RB Salzburg, winning four league titles, before joining Milan and played a minor role in Napoli's Scudetto triumph last term after being sent on loan there. "As a kid, I dreamed of playing in the Premier League. For 20-year-old Payas Jain, one of India’s brightest table tennis talents, the story began in Delhi when he was just six years old. Both his parents (Shweta Jain and Jinendra Jain) were national-level players, and their passion for the game rubbed off on him. At first, he picked up the paddle simply to have fun, shuttling between school and tournaments. But everything changed after he lost a match to a girl. “That loss hurt my ego,” he recalled in an exclusive conversation with WION. “I started playing table tennis just to beat her. Slowly, my interest got better and better, and the rest is history.” What began as a child’s determination soon transformed into a professional ambition. With unwavering support from his parents and coach (Aman Balgu), Payas had access to trainers, physios, and mental coaches early in his journey — a privilege he doesn’t take for granted. Looking back, he calls his career “a nine out of ten,” not because it has been easy, but because he has always embraced the challenge of evolving his game. “Every year, I need to improve, to change my tactics, my strategy, my physical work. It’s difficult, but it’s also what I love about this sport.”
Table Tennis is like playing football and chess at the same time
Ask Payas about training, and his response is striking. “Table tennis is the fastest sport in the world. You get just 0.002 seconds. It’s like football and chess at the same time — you have to be fast, but also think.” His regimen isn’t just about reflexes or stamina. It’s as much mental as it is physical. Between points, he focuses on breathing, analysing opponents, and adjusting strategies in those precious ten seconds before play resumes. “You cannot make decisions while playing. Everything has to be done before. That’s why I train my mind as much as my body.” On India’s progress in table tennis, Payas believes the country is catching up with traditional powerhouses like China, Korea, and Japan, though the gap in systemic support remains. “They’ve had a structured system for 30-40 years. We’ve had one for about five years. But now things are moving fast. If we build a centralised training structure with consistent support, India can rise quickly.” For now, Payas’s eyes are set firmly on milestones — breaking into the world’s top 70, representing India at the 2026 Asian Games, and winning the national championship. But the ultimate dream remains clear: “I want to win an Olympic medal for India. I believe I can do it if I work hard.”
