Novak Djokovic has undergone a successful surgery following the knee injury he suffered in the round of 16 clash at the French Open on Monday (Jun 3).
Djokovic took to his social media handles and posted a picture of himself on crutches whilesurrounded by friends, family and team members.
"In the past day, I had to make some tough decisions after sustaining a meniscus tear during my last match," wrote Djokovic.
"I’m still processing it all but I am happy to update you that the surgery went well. I am so appreciative of the team of doctors who have been by my side as well as the overwhelming support I have received from my fans," he further wrote.
Post the five-setter match against Argentina's Francisco Cerundolo, the Serbian underwent a MRI scan which showed he had a “torn medial meniscus in his right knee”.
"I am really sad to announce that I have to withdraw from Roland Garros. I played with my heart and gave my all in yesterday’s match and unfortunately, due to a medial meniscus tear in my right knee, my team and I had to make a tough decision after careful consideration and consultation," said Djokovic at the time.
However, after the surgery, the 27-year-old said that he was going to try his "best to be healthy" in an attempt to return to the tennis court as soon possible.
"My love for this sport is strong and the desire to compete at the highest level is what keeps me going. Idemooo."
Djokovic's statement comes a day afterBozidar Maljkovic, the president of the Olympic Committee of Serbia cast aspersions over his injury.
“My son follows the French press every day. The French wrote in very serious media that Novak Djokovic had an operation,” Maljkovic said.
“We called [Djokovic’s] uncle, but we received information that he did not. I would not like to speculate," he added.
Despite the surgery, Djokovic's participation in the Wimbledon remains a major doubt as the tournament gets underway on July 1.
Later in the same month, the Olympics kickstart in Paris and Djokovic would be hoping to participate in the quadrennial event as an Olympic gold medal is one of the rare honours he has not won in the sport yet.
