India men's hockey team lost to Germany 3-2 in the semifinal on Tuesday (Aug 6) at the ongoing Paris Olympics 2024 and failed to reach the gold medal match. They will now play for their second consecutive bronze.

The game started with India opening the scoring with skipperHarmanpreet Singh scoring on a penalty corner in the seventh minute of the first quarter. Germany came back strongly in the second quarter with two goals.

Germany'sPeillat scored the equaliser in the third minute of the second quarter off a penalty corner beforeRuehr scored the go-ahead goal three minutes before halftime. India went into the halftime trailing at 1-2.

India came back strongly in the third quarter and scored its second goal in the sixth minute of the quarter, bringing the scores level at 2-2.

Germany pulled ahead with five minutes left in the game asMarco Miltkau deflected a pass fromPeillat to take his team at 3-2 and the score remained the same till the end of the match.

India, whichhas a total of 12 medals in men's hockey with eight golds, one silver and three bronze medals, will now have a chance to add another bronze to their tally.

They first won the gold in the 1928 Amsterdam Games and last in the 1980 Moscow Games. Their other golds came in 1932 Los Angeles, 1936 Berlin, 1948 London, 1952 Helsinki, 1956 Melbourne and 1964 Tokyo games. The teamwon itsonly silver in the 1960 Rome Olympics.

The bronze medals came in 1968 Mexico City, 1972 Munich and most recently in the 2020Tokyo Games.

They now play for the second consecutive bronze medal against Spain on Thursday (Aug 8).
