On Wednesday (Sep 4), the Indian contingent's medal tally continued to rise in the ongoing Paris Paralympics 2024 edition, with Sachin Khilari winning the silver medal in shotput F46 final. The 2023 and 2024 world champion clinched silver with an Asian record throw of 16.32 m whereas Canada's Greg Stuart won gold with a season-best throw of 16.38 m. Crotia's Luka Bakovic settled for bronze with a throw of 16.27 m. Notably, the other two Indians in the event, Mohd Yasser and Rohit Kumar, finished eighth and ninth, respectively.

Talking about the 34-year-old Khilari, he achieved his best throw on his second attempt. With this, he also bettered his own Asian record of 16.30 m, which he achieved while winning gold in the World Para-Athletics Championships in Japan, early this year in May. In addition, Khilari’s silver is the 11th medal from para-athletics in the ongoing Games.

Meanwhile, Canada's Stewart defended his Tokyo Paralympic gold courtesy of a throw of 16.38 m.

PM MODI CONGRATULATES SACHIN

Soon after Sachin added to India's medal tally (21) in the Paralympic Games, PM Narendra Modi took to his official account on X, formerly Twitter, to congratulate the athlete.

PM Modi wrote, "Congratulations to Sachin Khilari for his incredible achievement at the #Paralympics2024! In a remarkable display of strength and determination, he has won a Silver medal in the Men’s Shotput F46 event. India is proud of him."

Shortly afterwards, PM Modi also shared a post on X saying, "India is proud and delighted! Our incredible Paralympic contingent has set a record for the highest ever medals for our country in any Paralympics. This shows the dedication, passion and determination of our athletes. Congrats to each and every player."

On Tuesday (Sep 3), the Indian contingent achieved its best-ever performance in Paralympic Games with 20 medals. Sachin's silver has further added to the tally and the countrymen will hope for more medals before the conclusion of the ongoing edition in Paris.

At present, India, with 21 medals, occupy the 19th spot in the overall standings.
